From the California Museum’s website: “In a state of millions, it’s easy to get lost. But there are some who dreamt big and who persevered in the face of adversity. These stars of arts, education, business and labor, science, sports, philanthropy and public service exemplify the best of California and will continue to inspire generations to come.”

Induction Cooktop by Max Burton 6000 Series Review

Check Price Now!

I’ve had this unit about a month now and so far I can say that works very well. You can cook either by setting a power level (1-9) or by setting a desired cooking temperature which was a feature I didn’t expect.

The first time I used it, I wasn’t very familiar with the power settings and I managed to burn some butter I was trying to brown in the pan. I usually cook on a gas stove and brown butter at medium heat, so if anything, medium heat on this induction unit is much hotter than what I’m used to. At power level 9 it would probably melt my cookware or char whatever was cooking … on second thought, I’ll probably never use it at that level.

The one reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is the difference in power levels is just a little too big for my taste. Power level 1 is a very low simmer in which the unit cycles on and off to achieve a very low power output. The problem is that power level 1 can’t provide a constant low simmer – which would be very useful for cooking things like rice or a stock. Power level 2 is too big of a step up to really be useful for the same kinds of foods. I would have preferred less overall wattage and better heat control.

The temperature cook feature is useful in some circumstances. If you just want to keep something warm while you finish preparing a meal, it’s very useful. Unfortunately, it also suffers from some of the same problems as the power level output mode where there is too much difference between one temperature level and another. You can’t dial in 185 degrees. Instead, you have preset temperatures such as 140, 180, 210, etc. These temperature settings do have a bit of delay when they are set, also. If you are going from 210 to 180, you can expect the unit will stop delivering power altogether until the ceramic surface cools down to the desired temperature. Meanwhile, your cookware and food may have already cooled off more than you might have intended.

Despite what I’ve said, the above problems really are fairly minor and I can work around them. Had this unit been more expensive, I would find the issues to be more serious. I think this unit is a great bargain and the features you do get for this price are well justified.

Induction Cooktop by Max Burton 6000 Series Overview

Induction cooking is extremely fast and is safe even for children since there is no open flame. Because induction cooking works electromagnetically, heat is generated only in the cookware that it comes into contact with. Your food is cooked to perfection and the cook top stays cool. With 9 temperature settings, 10 power levels and a 150-minute timer, it’s at home in a restaurant kitchen as well as your own. Can be used with cast-iron, carbon steel, enamel steel or magnetic stainless-steel cookware. Black with gray accents.

Great value, cooks well, interface could be better, beeps too loud – Aaron Wolf – Ann Arbor, MI United States
Induction cooking is fantastic, far superior to traditional electric and more efficient and practical than gas. This is the cheapest and best value to get into induction cooking. This is powerful. The other similar portable units are 1200 or 1300 watts usually, and this is 1800. It boils water noticeably faster than our other portable unit. Unfortunately, every push of a button emits a very loud beep, which really isn’t necessary. And when the timer goes off it just beeps once instead of more noticeably (of course it stops cooking as well, so it isn’t a real problem, but just not ideal). The interface is a little less straightforward than our other unit also. But this is the most powerful and the cheapest portable induction unit, and it works great. We’ve had no problems so far.

Great Additional Burner – D. Pralle –
I bought this burner in order to determine if I wanted to go with a full size induction range/cooktop for my kitchen remodel. As expected, I needed to purchase a couple of new pots/pans, but once I tried it out, I was impressed with the speed and efficiency of this cooktop.

It will boil a liter of cold water in less than five minutes and the temperature setting was very handy when using the cooktop for deep frying. Setting the cooktop to 360F yielded a very consistent temperature and didn’t require frequent power changes when adding or removing food from the oil.

Cleanup was also a snap.

The cooktop also has an alarm which tells you if a pot/pan is not induction compatible. The same alarm sounds if you’ve removed a pot/pan from the burner.

Overall, I am very pleased with the performance of this cooktop. I’ve decided to stick with gas for my primary cooking surface, but I think I will use this cooktop frequently as an extra burner when cooking for a group and as a warming tray for parties.

…and you can’t beat the price.

This is my thirteenth post. I feel the need to write something and write it quickly and then move a

This is my thirteenth post. I feel the need to write something and write it quickly and then move as fast as possible onto the fourteenth post before Thanksgiving Day, lest something terrible happens.

Yes, I harbor all sorts of unreasonable fears and superstitions. When I was pregnant with my daughter, I was roughly the size of a morbidly obese manatee in the last month. So, my fabulous OB took pity on me and scheduled an induction. Fantastic! Then, as she looked through her calendar, she said, “OK, so we’ll be delivering your daughter on the 13th”! Oh. Don’t get me wrong, I still agreed to the induction; it was time to get this baby out of my belly. But I will admit that I was spooked about bringing my little girl into the world on the 13th – would the delivery have complications? would my baby be OK?.

Ridiculous? Yes. It’s pretty interesting, isn’t it? I’m a relatively educated woman, but no amount of education can replace those baseless anxieties.

Other superstitions and odd little rituals I embrace:

1 – Don’t let a black cat cross your path. Thanks a lot, Mom. My mother will swerve her car 180 degrees in order to avoid a black cat crossing the street in front of her. She used to tell me, “if a black cat crosses your path, someone you know will die”. Well, that’s great, but didn’t we almost die, Mom, from that minivan wheelie? I thought this one was absolute bunk when I was little and, as an adult, I have no reliable data to reverse my original belief. But it’s amazing how your parents’ teachings – both the really important ones and the silly superstitious ones – stick with you. I avoid those black cats, no matter how cute, like the plague now.

2 – Checking locks/alarms three times (with verbal confirmation). Yeah, this one is less of a superstition and more of a manifestation of obsessive compulsive disorder. (And no, I don’t have obsessive compulsive disorder. Most of us, I would argue, exhibit some symptoms of this disorder, but what we do doesn’t interfere with our daily lives.) So, when I’m leaving the house or setting my alarm, I check the locks/alarm three times. But, as I’m checking, I say aloud “locked” or “alarm is set” each time. For some reason, that verbal confirmation of the action makes me more sure that the door is indeed locked for the alarm is indeed set. Drives my husband crazy.

3 – Nighttime rituals with my daughter. When my husband and I put our little bundle to bed, we have a little routine that I swear helps her sleep better (which isn’t really true, but now I’m convinced if we don’t perform the routine, she’ll have a worse sleep time than usual). As we’re leaving our daughter’s room, we blow her three kisses. Both of us do it, even though my husband says it makes him feel awkward. (Um, there’s no one here but us, but whatever.) Then, our daughter, who hasn’t quite mastered the blowing-of-the-kiss, puts her hands to her mouth and laughs. No return kiss from her, but she looks very happy. And that’s a nice way to end the day.

My daughter was born with no complications. The delivery went smoothly and mom and baby were in good health after the birth. A date on the calendar was not going to affect the outcome. However, my little girl, even in the womb, is a sweetheart and decided to come a day before my scheduled induction; she entered this world on the 12th of the month. Thanks, baby.

So, at this time I was still a smoker. About a pack per day. I had sworn to myself for as long as I could recall that should I ever become pregnant I would quit smoking. And I did. From August 4th at a pack per day to August 11th and my last cigarette to date. Before I went to sleep, about 11pm on August 11th, 2008, I smoked my last cigarette. I still miss them once in a while, but for the most part I think they stink when I smell them… and I cannot believe I used to smell like that. I honestly had no idea.

I was terrified to begin with. There was mass confusion in trying to get my first appointment set up. I ultimately ended up going to the Wake Med High Risk Clinic. Why high risk, you ask? I am diabetic type II for starters. I was also (at that time) 37 years old, considered advanced maternal age (not sure why, but what can ya do).

I had to go on a special diet for diabetic prego mommies, and test my sugar 4 times per day to start. As my numbers slowly began to rise the docs decided to put me on oral meds to help control my blood sugars. During a pregnancy you don’t want out of control numbers. And even though my numbers had previously been good, when you are pregnant, when the placenta is working right, your blood sugar numbers just naturally rise… I was destined for greater control aid needs, whether I wanted to be or not.

I think I have mentioned before how I hate needles. Well, the week after Thanksgiving 2008, at my regularly scheduled prenatal checkup, I was informed my numbers had reached a point where the oral meds were no longer enough. It was time to begin… insulin injections. I was now testing my blood sugars (pricking my finger) 4 times per day, and giving myself an insulin injection in the thigh 4 times per day. It was hard, but I had been warned in advance it was coming without a doubt, so at least it was no surprise. And I was so beyond over joyed at being pregnant, already totally in love with my baby… I was willing to suffer these needles for my child. A good thing too, since I had no choice.

I never really got sick while pregnant. I had about 3 weeks straight of being nauseous from the time I woke up until the time I went to bed, but I never tossed my cookies, so I figure I was pretty lucky. Aside from the initial nausea and anxiety, my pregnancy was pretty much uneventful… just how I wanted it.

I did what I could to keep healthy, stay relaxed, enjoy being pregnant and bond with my unborn child. When we found out we were having a little girl, we were thrilled. Cheza (Lunar Flower/Moon Maiden) Tsume (Wolf’s Claw) Rose would be her name.

Around week 30 of my pregnancy I began to practice Hypnobabies (self-hypnosis for pain control in natural childbirth). I was preparing to meet my little angel.

At week 37 I was informed that due to being diabetic and the likelihood for a larger baby, plus the risk for complications of diabetic pregnancy babies who go full-term, they would want to induce me. Cheza’s original estimated due date was April 1st, 2009. Her induction was scheduled for March 25th. I was still determined to have my natural childbirth with the aid of self-hypnosis and the support of Donnie. It would be a bit more of a challenge with the chemical induction, but I was up for it, I was excited about meeting my baby, meeting my Cheza… meeting our miracle baby.

My last doctor appointment before my scheduled induction was on the 22nd. I had gained a total of 28 pounds during my pregnancy, my A1c had dropped during the pregnancy, and other than bruises on my thighs from all the injections, I had what I would consider a wonderful pregnancy (wonderful enough that I would love to be pregnant again right now!).

The maternity ward was busy the evening of the 25th. When Donnie called to make sure we should still come in at 8pm, they asked us to please call back in hour and check… this continued for a while, and it was 10pm before we were finally able to come check in and get me into a room. They hooked me up to monitors and begin getting things ready to start the induction. At some point they lost Cheza’s heartbeat on the monitor. It took what seemed like forever and me rolling over a couple times for them to find her again… much lower.

They wheeled in an ultrasound machine and checked her out. She had flipped breech. She had been vertex at the last three ultrasounds, but she never engaged… and I guess she was not ready to be induced, so she flipped right there in the labor and delivery room I was in at the birthing wing of the hospital. They sent us home and scheduled me for a cesarean section the next day. I was to be at the hospital at noon.

I was disappointed, yes. I admit it. I had wanted a natural childbirth, and I was getting the furthest thing from it. But I was still going to get the same end result, my beautiful baby girl.

Cheza was born on March 26, 2009 at 2:10pm. She weighed 6 lbs 11 oz (far from the large diabetic baby I had been warned of) and 18-3/4″ long. 10 fingers, 10 toes, beautiful, wonderful, perfect.

Cheza breastfeed exclusively for the first 6 months, until I unfortunately just began to dry up out of nowhere. She transitioned to formula with ease.

I have lost my pregnancy weight and am now anxious to be pregnant again, yet also accepting of the fact that this may have been a one time shot for me, and I a okay with that. I can always have fun trying!

A few weeks into a new job, disillusionment . . . It’s inevitable. A few weeks into a new job,

A few weeks into a new job, disillusionment . . .

It’s inevitable. A few weeks into a new job, the honeymoon passes, and we have our first ‘fight’.

Except, that unlike a relationship where we have mutual responsibility for getttng through a fight safely, at work, at work the blame usually falls on the employee. We get extremely anxious about this unwelcome feeling that our job sucks and that we have made a very bad move!

Temporary disillusionment is 100% predictable

In a well run firm, this should not happen. The crisis will happen ~ it is called storming, from the forming, storming, norming, performing, adjourning sequence of group formation.

Every new relationship, whether personal or business, will go through a crisis of confidence as surely as the sun comes up in the morning.

What should happen, when we are running ourselves well, is that we wait for the storming. We even look forward to it, because storming marks the progress from the milling around of forming to “getting down to work”. We storm when we start working and we say “is this it? Is this worthwhile?”

Note well: we don’t have an anxiety attach until we start work! If there has been no storming, surely as the sun comes up, the employee is still in the forming stage. They still expect you to take all the responsibility and are yet to make the job their own. So welcome storming ~ even if sometimes it takes you by surprise!

How to manage storming when you are the manager

Your role as a manager, when storming begins, is not to panic! The first sign of an inexperienced (untrained, unsupported) manager is that they take the storming personally, or ignore it.

The employee is serious. He, or she, has issues. And they want reassurance. Is this job worthwhile? Your task is to remain calm and through that calmness, show you confidence in three things

The doability of the project

Your competence to lead the project

& The employee’s competence to play the role that they were appointed to play.

Hesitate, show your own fears, panic, doubt the employee ~ and you confirm the employee’s worst fears. Your panic says to him (or her) that you also do not believe that this company, this team, this boss is not up to this job.

Please be calm and show confidence that all will work. And of course, if there is a specific issue, sort it out with equal calm and dispatch.

Task-oriented and socially-oriented reports

Now to make our lives a little difficult, employees don’t storm at the same points. They storm when they start working and different details will set off alarm bells.

One thing we can be sure of, though, is that highly task-oriented individuals storm earlier. Some will stat storlming before they arrive! Early stormers are more conscientious and results-oriented and consequently start questioning details early. Budget some energy for being the anchor they need and be thankful you have hired a workhorse!

Very sociable people are the opposite. They have to get their social bearings before they start work (just as task people must get their task bearings before they get social). They may take an interminable time to get down to work and they will take longer if you push them. When they are ready, they will begin; and they too will get a fright and storm. And maybe they start stormin months after the task-oriented individuals – so allow for it. Remain calm. That is what they are looking for. If you panic, if you believe they are attacking you, you will confirm their worst fears – that they are in the wrong job at the wrong time in the wrong place with the wrong people. Be calm.

How to manage your own storming

Now if you are in not-so-well-run firm and there is no one to calm you down when you start to panic, you are going to have to calm yourself down.

I’ve tried to make a heuristic for an individual to manage their own storming. Anyone? This one defeats me. After all, if I became involved as a coach/counsellor, I would a) calm down the report b) show the confidence the manager neglected to show and c) calm down the manager!

Maybe try this:

Draw out the work process

Mark every part that works quite well and you should continue

Mark out every process that worries you and try to understand why the firm manages that process the way they do

Keep your own counsel

Be calm because calmness seems to be lacking around here

Hope that helps! Remember it is normal to have an anxiety attack shortly after the ‘honeymoon’. It means you care. It means you’ve started to deal with detail of the job! Enjoy!

Hi Guys & Girls,

Due to postings I’ve just discovered on the internet illustrating how many INCORRECTLY TRAINED – DANGEROUS & UNINSURED wannabe Street Hypnotists there are I urge you to send this email to every hypnosis and magical mentalism friend you have…

CHECK THIS VIDEO OUT FIRST…

http://www.metacafe.com/watch/3249046/street_hypnosis_in_uk_is_illegal_plastic_reality_dangers/

And then CHECK THIS EXPLOSIVE SITE OUT:

http://roylehypnotist.wordpress.com/the-very-real-dangers-of-street-hypnosis-reality-is-plastic-the-manchurian-approach-anthony-jacquin-zap-street-trance-other-things-such-as-hypno-attack-encouraing-people-sometimes-unk/

And Here’s what KEN WEBSTER (Chairman Of The Federation of Ethical Stage Hypnotists) has to say about it all:

http://roylehypnotist.wordpress.com/2009/08/25/what-does-ken-webster-the-chairman-of-the-federation-of-ethical-stage-hypnotists-fesh-think-about-illegal-and-dangerous-street-hypnotists/

I’d strongly advise you all to READ EVERY WORD of the above postings and also EVERY COMMENT made about the postings and then decide for yourself….. but REMEMBER THIS…

01) Under 1952 Hypnotism Act you can face a £1,000 Fine…

02) Breaking the Hypnosis Conditions of Licensing Act 2003 could lead to a £10,000 fine and/or six months imprisonment for some involved and ultimately mega bad press and litigation agains the hypnotist….

03) KEN WEBSTER has issued a statement (see posting above) confirming that my concerns are correct and that these ill trained UNI|NSURED and UNLICENSED wannabe hypnotists are both potentially dangerous whilst also being ILLEGAL….

04) NUmerous UK Councils have issued statements (see above links) confirming this to be correct and that THE UK STREET MAGIC HYPNOTIST’S are ILLEGAL – UNLICENSED AND UNINSURED…

I’d say that also makes them wholly UNETHICAL and IRRESPONSIBLE… But hey what do you expect when your sold a product (say Plastic Book or DVD) which does not cover UK LAWs….

And thats why my Special Xmas offer COVER’S ALL UK HYPNOSIS LAWS (and all loopholes) together with isurance details and such like… So to BE A LEGAL – HONEST AND SAFE ETHICAL HYPNOTIST Secure your Future now by visiting….

[Robotkid249] details how to build a wireless power transmission system. This is similar to the commercial applications we have seen in a TED talk as well is in a Sony prototype. Power is fed to a ring made of magnet wire. A smaller loop is attached to the system that you want to power and picked up from the base unit. In this case, he is powering some LEDs but the concept can be tailored for your purposes such as an inductive charging pad. We’d like to see a hack that incorporates the base into a mouse pad (or the desk itself) and the receiver into the body of a wireless mouse. We’ve seen a commercial solution along these lines but we want one that doesn’t require a physical connection for power transfer.

One of the most frustrating things about taking an introduction to SLA course is the overabundance of often contradictory theories and the lack of consensus among researchers on what the research questions of interest are, on what is to be measured, and how it is to be measured. Indeed, the very relevance of empirical data to SLA and the nature of SLA as a scientific field have been called into question by some!

Geoff Jordan has set out to put at end to this state of affairs. His book, Theory Construction in Second Language Acquisition (2004, John Benjamins), is what I’m reading at the moment, and after 4 chapters it is certainly the most entertaining and clearly written book on SLA and methodology that I have ever read.

The book begins with description of the problem in SLA as Jordan sees it. The field is divided into two camps with radically different epistemological approaches. There is a rationalist camp, of which Jordan himself is a proud member, and a relativist camp, occupied by the likes of James Lantolf and David Block. The relativists, says Jordan, have latched onto a post-structuralist, post-modern epistemology which declares the relativity of all knowledge and denies an objective outside world to be observed and measured. In this epistemology, science is nothing more than a social construction, and it’s discoveries are only “true” relative to itself. This radical subjectivity and solipsism arises, says Jordan, from a misapplication and over-interpretation of Hume’s problem of induction.

To make a long story short, Jordan is calling for a rejection of relativist approaches to the study of SLA and a renewed focus on theory building, using empirical measurement as a crucial tool.

I find this approach refreshing. We spend a lot of time in class arguing across purposes. It is highly desirable to agree on our research questions and the methods of inquiry that are likely to be fruitful. Moreover, I think that the post-structuralist, post-modern, constructivist movements do nothing but muddy the waters of human knowledge. They wantonly and arrogantly dismiss the collective efforts of 4 centuries of science as nothing but social construction lacking any claims to objective truth. How, pray tell, did that social construction lacking any claim to objective truth accomplish the invention of the automobile? The confirmed predictions of Newtonian mechanics? The harnessing of the power of the atom? Relativism quickly disintegrates into absurdity and nihilism, ignoring the experience of everyday life and rejecting all claims to truth.

I’ve only finished 4 chapters, so I will be posting more on Jordan. Coming up: Jordan evaluates current theories in SLA for their adherence to a rationalist epistemology.

’til next time…

I Search for ‘Simple’ and Got This

Simplicity is the name of the game here. It’s meant to be a recipe for when you don’t want to cook.

3 or 4 chicken thighs – I get mine ‘IQF’ – ‘Individually Quick Frozen’, which means I pull a bag out of the freezer, grab some thighs, and I’m done. Trader Joe’s has great thighs.

Olive oil

Poultry seasoning – this is a pre-mixed seasoning that prevent you from having to think about it. I used a Trader Joes no-salt version of the stuff

Salt

Preheat oven to 400. Place thighs on a cookie sheet that’s been sprayed with non-stick spray. Drizzle olive oil over the thighs, sprinkle a liberal amount of the seasoning over the olive-oil-covered thighs, then add a bit of salt.

Place in oven for 25 minutes. Optional: set oven to broil for 5-7 additional minutes.

Chicken thighs have more flavor than breasts because of the higher fat content. They also tend to be less dry. They are also typically cheaper, since the average person’s fear of fat keeps the cost of thighs down.

The flavor can sometimes be a bit…strong, for lack of a better word, but this way of preparing them gave them a terrific flavor.

Safe for induction, a great meal for folks just starting Atkins, and a nearly idiot-proof recipe. The only thing that can go wrong is that you forget to turn off the oven and burn down the house.

I can’t help you there.

I purchased some wild caught cod and wanted to make my own sauce, which I typically make from mayo, parm cheese, and butter – but I had already made the Ricotta Cranberry Cream concoction and didn’t feel like pulling out another bowl.

I had bought Bertolli Alfredo sauce for my kids – it was sitting on the counter. I took a look at the label, and the carbs were pretty low. So I used that.

Here’s the ingredient list:

1 large piece wild caught cod

1/2 cup Bertolli Alfredo Sauce

1/4 cup Parmesan cheese

fresh ground pepper

So, with countertop convection oven at 450, I put the cod in for about 10 minutes, then took it out, poured enough of the alfredo sauce to cover the fish, then sprinkled the parm cheese on top and finished up with the fresh ground pepper. I then put it back into the oven until the sauce browned – about 7 minutes or so.

While I might have overcooked the fish a wee bit, the flavor was pretty good. Next time, I’ll cut back the first tour in the oven by a few minutes.

This should be fine in induction – it did not impact my ketosis.

It’s a few days later, and I finished up the cod as my lunch. When I’m time-strapped, this is a great meal 20 minutes from the table for prep, cooking and cleanup.
