Last night was fun, but here’s hoping the Raps have something left in their run-and-gun legs. Coming off a 123-112 home win over the Pacers, Toronto is in Charlotte tonight to face the 4-9 Bobcats. Full game coverage and other great Raptors stuff is available over at Raptors Republic.

Charlotte snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 104-88 win over Indiana on Sunday, its first win since picking up renowned douchebag Stephen Jackson in a deal with Golden State early last week. Jackson’s production with the Bobcats has been par for his course — decent scoring numbers (17.6), low shooting percentages (42.6 from the field and 29.4 from deep) and little in the way of wins (one in four games). He and Gerald Wallace share the scoring load on a team void of any real star players — one that Raptors should be able to handle even on a back-t0-back.

Last night’s Raptors performance was typical of the way they’ve played in most of their wins this season — great offense, no D and a sketchy second half before closing out strong. Jose Calderon had his best game, attacking early both with the drive and from deep and finishing with a season-high 21 on 8-of-11. Chris Bosh was sloppy offensively, but I’m counting on him bouncing back with a strong effort and leading the boys to a win tonight.

The Raptors and Bobcats get going from Charlotte at seven.

Speedway Jr. High School was filled with nervous and excited chatter on Tuesday morning as students were expecting a special guest. Kathy Owen the P.E. teacher and advisor for the Fuel Up to Play 60 program planned the event making this opportunity possible for fifty lucky students to meet a young athlete making a name for himself in the NFL. Joseph Addai, a running back for the Indianapolis Colts in his fourth season, referred to his body as a fancy car he wants to fuel up with gas (nutrient rich foods), an analogy used to paint a picture of the importance of good nutrition as a part of fueling up with energy.

Before Addai was introduced, the atmosphere was set by a skit acted out by Ball State dietetic interns to show how important breakfast is for the beginning of the day. The scene began in a first period gym class. One intern played an energetic, hyper student while the other played a tired, lagging student who forgot to have breakfast. The two were chatting while exercising and sharing ideas for breakfast on the go. When the skit was over the interns interacted with the students by asking for ideas and feedback on what he or she does at home when pressed for time. The presentation was finished off by showing display boards with more simple breakfast ideas, such as a peanut butter and jelly sandwich or pizza and milk.

Next, Colts Cheerleaders spoke to the students on the importance of eating healthy and portion control. The cheerleaders shared their eating habits and how exercise everyday can help an individual stay fit and lead a healthy lifestyle. They emphasized the importance of eating fruits and vegetables, drinking lots of milk, and eating whole grains as part of a well-balanced diet.

As Addai was introduced the excitement of the students erupted which created an exciting energy in the room. Students were able to ask Addai an array of questions from his favorite play to how being a role model has affected his life. Addai’s take home message led back to his ability to keep a healthy lifestyle by staying active all year round and keeping his body fueled up with the right nutrition, especially when starting his day. The event ended with a celebratory lunch and autograph session allowing students to meet Addai one on one.

Not with my own projects, but with the general state of film finance in South Africa… probably in the world, and the lack of imagination and business sense shown by a lot of independent producers.

The past nine months I have been following 20 low budget feature projects and have spoken to all of the producers about post production solutions, which incidentally, is my real day job. Out of 20, only one has happened, the rest wait indefinitely for financing.

My question is, why budget your film at a level you can’t attain? Why write it at all in a way that demands an unattainable capital outlay, a mountain of cash that you are unlikely to ever see returned in any case?

I am of the opinion that more producers should be aiming at even lower budgets than they are currently. I would consider R200k ZAR to be a realistic goal for a full length feature. I don’t think this is impossible, neither is it easy but it involves a few necessary adjustments.

1. Post it yourself, entirely… many film makers possess these skillsets or know people that do, make a plan. Get a facility just to help you with a final grade, and deliverables.
2. Shoot quickly… schedule a two or three week shoot, no more. Be prepared to shoot when you can, it doesn’t have to be two or three consecutive weeks.
3. Make use of a small student or volunteer crew and connect with film schools needing to give thier students experience.
4. Write a contained script, keep to a small cast and a few locations only.
5. Keep it simple, skip the cranes and steadicam and rather shoot from a tripod, perhaps track and a skateboard dolly.
6. Don’t overlight… lighting changes can take hours, keep it simple.
7. Pay for only what you have to. It is possible that catering can be your biggest cash expense.
8. You are not Steven Spielberg… reign in your expectations. It’s in your interest to make a film, and tell a story well, rather than have your project delayed indefinitely while you wait for R2.5 million to qualify for the DTI rebate. Forget about the rebate, make your film.
9. Spend lots of time in pre-production, plan, plan, plan, list, list, list, and communicate with your team!

Brittany Peterson, a dietetic intern from Ball State University, is fulfilling her last community rotation at the Dairy and Nutrition Council of Indiana. She received her Bachelor’s of Science degree in Dietetics from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. Please follow Brittany as she spends her time with DNCI touring Smith Dairy in Richmond, Indiana.

Britany & Camila, two dietetic interns with DNCI, preparing to tour Smith Dairy in Richmond, Indiana.

The last five months of my life have been spent in an internship, working toward my dream of becoming a registered dietitian. I have worked with migrant children from Texas and Mexico through a Head Start program, food service workers in a hospital kitchen, and in my previous rotation I spent time in clinical dietetics finding ways to improve lives through the nutrition of hospital patients. Now, I am at the Dairy and Nutrition Council of Indiana where on my first day, Monday, November 16, 2009, I was in an oversized lab coat and a hair net that resembled a cupcake top, touring Smith Dairy in Richmond, Indiana.

Smith Dairy is a family owned and operated company that has been running out of Orville, Ohio, since the day Peter and John Schmid (sons of an immigrant family from Switzerland) borrowed $300 from a neighbor to buy a dairy on January 1, 1909. So, why is it that the Schmids named their dairy “Smith Dairy?” Well, it is as simple as Smith is just easier to pronounce. In the beginning, John and Peter only owned two horses to take them on their daily delivery route in which they delivered up to 60 gallons of milk each day.

As the years went by, Smith Dairy prospered. It continued to work out of Orville, Ohio, as well as buying Wayne Dairy in Richmond, Indiana, in 1996. Fresh milk is brought into this facility seven days a week to be pasteurized, packaged, labeled, boxed, bundled, and shipped to their respective locations. From the trucks, milk is put into a pasteurization container for either HTST (High Temperature Short Time) or UHT (Ultra High Temperature) pasteurization. In HTST pasteurization, milk is heated to 171°F for fifteen seconds. This process is quick, but not as quick as UHT which sterilizes milk after only two seconds of being heated to temperatures of at least 275°F. Doing so extends milk’s shelf life up to six months.

Today, Smith Dairy is running 100 years strong and prospering largely due to their commitment of creating a product unsurpassed by time and leading the field with new ideas. For example, they developed the yellow Super jug used to block light rays from damaging milk’s nine essential nutrients. Every great company has a strong base, a mission statement that helps keep everyone focused. Smith Dairy’s mission statement is based on a three-legged milk stool, the foundation (the milk seat) holds together the customers (leg one), the associates (leg two) and the owners (leg three); all working together to bring dairy products Americans enjoy to our grocery stores, schools, restaurants, and homes.

By Jesse Jones

5 field goals (1 missed), no touchdowns, 1 interception. That’s a line that will not let teams win against the best teams in the league. Sadly, that’s the line and the outcome the Ravens got today against Indy in Baltimore.

Indy came into the game with a record of 9-0, and the Ravens with a record of 5-4. Many people believed the Ravens would be blown out, but the game was a defensive struggle. Here’s the breakdown:

The Good

The D did an excellent job against Peyton Manning. He threw for only 1 TD, threw 2 INTs, and had very few big plays. I’m not sure what else you can ask for against the best QB in the league.

Overall, the D played very solid. Holding Indy to 17 points is very hard to do, and causing three turnovers helps give the team a great chance of winning.

Ray Rice is showing no signs of slowing down, whatsoever.

Billy Cundiff did a great job today, except for his missed field goal. Kicking and making five field goals is never a given.

The Bad

Penalties. No needed explanation for that one.

Cundiff missed a 30 yard field goal to put the Ravens up 15-14.

The Ugly

Red Zone play. Baltimore was stopped at the 1 yard line three straight plays and had to settle for a field goal. UNACCEPTABLE!

Joe Flacco’s interception. Stop being so predictable in clutch situations and play how you play during the other parts of the game.

John Harbaugh’s challenge of Reggie Wayne’s first down catch. It was a clear first down…

Reed’s fumble. You can never hate on a player for trying to extend the play and get better field position, but sometimes you need to know when it’s acceptable.

The Ravens are no 5-5. WOW!

Somehow, the Steelers lost to the Chiefs today. This puts them at 6-4 heading into the showdown with the Ravens. If the Ravens win, both teams will be 6-5, and the Ravens will be ahead in the standings. Let’s go!!

Ernest Hemingway is rumored to have said: “There are only three sports: car racing; bull fighting and mountain climbing. The rest are mere games.”

This is not a blog about bull fighting or mountain climbing. Or games.

The first question is “why racing?”. There is no answer. Since the automobile first appeared, men have been fascinated with race cars. For me, it began with a toy model of Emerson Fittipaldi’s Texaco-liveried McLaren ca. 1974. That white car, with its huge rear tires and massive front wings, was my prized possession (ironically, a toy with cigarette sponsorship). And somewhere, in the recesses of my brain, I recall the Indy 500, with drivers like Johnny Rutherford, Rick Mears, A.J. Foyt and Mario Andretti. Rutherford in the yellow Penzoil car. Mears in his Gould-sponsored machine. Mario and his Indy heartbreak. Open-wheel heroes. NASCAR was a country fair sideshow in those days; no one took it seriously north of Richmond.

On Memorial Day weekend, when the family was at the beach for the traditional opening of summer, I was parked in front of the television, watching Indy. My mom would ask about “cars going around in circles”, but she didn’t understand. I couldn’t articulate the awesome power of a driver flat-footing it around the Brickyard.

I don’t know what possessed an eight-year old boy to latch on to ESPN’s SpeedWorld, a weekly highlight show that featured Formula One, IMSA sportscars, and other exotic delights. This was the early days of cable, when ESPN struggled for viewers and gave a home to sports that coulnd’t make it on the network shows. ABC had the 500, with great commentators like Chris Economacki and Jackie Stewart. ESPN had Canadian football, and the more obscure forms of international racing. Through SpeedWorld I learned about F1 legends like Mansell, Piquet, Prost, and later…Senna. I loved the cartoonish IMSA cars, with their streamlined bodywork and ridiculous power, hoofing it over road courses like Mid-Ohio and Lime Rock.

I drifted away from the sport, but my passion was reignited during a summer following F1 in Europe. It was the summer that Damon Hill won the world championship, only to find himself out of a drive at Williams at the end of the season. You would be amazed at what you can learn about racing from a broadcast in a foreign language. And when Hill lost his seat at the end of the year, I learned what a fickle business racing can be.

And so it’s come to this. The retired sportswriter without a venue, starting a blog about racing. F1, Indy, Nascar, Le Mans – anything that goes fast on four wheels. This is not about horsepower, or tire pressure, or computers mapping out gear ratios. It is not about whether the car is too tight through the middle of the corner, or whether it needs a ride height adjustment during the second stop. Leave that to the techies.

This is about deafening engines, the smell of burning race fuel, and the smile on your face when the green flag comes down. It’s about the feeling you get watching a driver control his car on the limit of adhesion. It’s the speed of the field as it blows past your seat, the knife-edge heartbreak. It’s about the politics and the personalities and the business that drives racers to the limit, pushing against gravity itself in a mortal contest of speed.

Hemingway (if he really said it) was right about one thing: this is no game. This is life, death, and conquest at 230 mph. This is about being on the limit.

Let’s buckle up that five-point and go racing.

An Indiana dairy farm family experiencing the joy of feeding a calf.

Do you ever stop to think about where your food comes from? Sure, you make a trip to the local grocery store where you can purchase just about any food product you desire. You walk the aisles putting items from your list into a shopping cart, go through the checkout lane and pay the cashier, load up your car with the purchases, and then put them in the pantry once you get home. Shopping may seem like a chore, but come on, it’s easy! What if instead of driving to the store, you had to plow the ground and plant all the crops that you wanted for good nutrition? What if you had to milk your own cows and find a place to get the milk pasteurized before you had something to pour on your corn flakes or oat clusters? Now, doesn’t that make driving to the grocery store more appealing? The ease with which we get our food is one thing that many of us take for granted.

During this season of Thanksgiving, let us remember to thank our farmers. Today’s farmers work hard to provide us with wholesome, nutrient-rich foods so that we don’t have to. We, in America, are blessed with the most abundant and safest food supply in the world. Therefore, I am thankful for farmers. In particular, I am thankful for dairy farmers because I love milk, ice cold milk, one of the most nutrient rich foods available. Although, I would like to try my hand at milking cows, I do not think that it is something I would want to do every day. So, I am thankful for the dairy farming families who are out there every single day, regardless of weather conditions, providing me with milk that is packed with nine essential nutrients. They do this by caring for their animals and the land. You can learn more about how dairy farmers get proper nutrients into the soil while protecting against runoff as well as how they give their cows the most comfortable bedding possible by visiting Dairy Farming Today.

For more than 30 years, I’ve been telling people that dairy farmers are stewards of the land and the animals in their care. So, what exactly does it mean to be a steward? Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary says, “Stewardship is the careful and responsible management of something entrusted to one’s care.” Dairy farmers understand that they care for the land not just for their own families, but also for the families that will come after them. With their strong ethics and values in mind, I am confident that dairy farmers will leave the land in a better condition than when they received it. Therefore, future generations will be able to continue providing the world with wholesome, nutrient-rich foods which is something for which we should all be thankful.

So, if you have not thanked a farmer recently, do so today. It is never too late to let them know how much you appreciate all that they do for the health of you and your family.
