“The day the political landscape changed forever“, was how Fritjof Capra referred to events of N30, Tuesday 30th of November 1999, in his book The Hidden Connections. He was referring to the day when 1000´s of global justice activists came together and succeeded in shutting down the first WTO (World Trade Organisation) talks in the US using (mostly) non violent direct actions (NVDA) in the north western US city of Seattle. This was the event which brought the “globalisation” debate to the mainstream. It has been misleadingly described as anti-globalisation, what it should be accurately described as is anti corporate globalisation.

10 years on and again there is rubber bullets, tear gas and flames in the streets. This time in Geneva, as people from all over the world converge in the lead up to COP15, the climate change talks in Copenhagen… amongst others, the Social and Climate justice caravan.

This film, shot by 100 amateur camera operators, tells the story of the enormous street protests in Seattle, Washington in November 1999, against the World Trade Organization summit being held there. Vowing to oppose, among other faults, the WTO’s power to arbitrally overrule nations’ environmental, social and labour policies in favour of unbridled corporate greed, protestors from all around came out in force to make their views known and stop the summit. Against them is a brutal police force and a hostile media as well as the stain of a minority of destructively overzealous comrades. Against all odds, the protesters bravely faced fierce opposition to take back the rightful democratic power that the political and corporate elite of the world is determined to deny the little people.

Two important summits take place at the end of 2009 in Europe: the 7th conference of ministers of the World Trade Organization (WTO) in Geneva and the UN climate summit in Copenhagen (COP15). With a week between them, 60 activists from the global South will travel across Europe through Italy, Switzerland, Germany, France and Denmark. They will draw attention to the consequences neoliberal globalization and climate change have on their lives and show how to fight against them. Together with local activists, they look for alternatives to free trade and the privatisation of resources, and unite the North and South in their fights for another world.

Up to 4-5000 people today marched in Geneva protesting ahead of the WTO meeting in an International Demonstration as part of a week of action and debate around the WTO Ministerial which runs from 30th November to 2nd December.

The mobilisation is seen very much in relation to the COP15 UN climate conference taking place in Copenhagen 7th – 18th December.

This afternoon clashes broke out as parts of the crowd attacked property smashing windows of banks and shops and setting a number of cars on fire. Police used tear gas, concussion greandes and water cannon. Further protests are scheduled with the WTO meeting starting on Monday 30th November, ten years exactly since the famous Seattle WTO protests.

Seattle Grows Up

In the lead up to the massive COP15 goings on in Denmark next month, a recent article “Seattle Grows Up” from Naomi Klein reported;

A decade ago, in a New York Times comment piece published after Seattle was shut down, I wrote that a new movement advocating a radically different form of globalisation “just had its coming-out party”. What will be the significance of Copenhagen? I put that question to John Jordan, whose prediction of what eventually happened in Seattle I quoted in my book No Logo. He replied: “If Seattle was the movement of movements’ coming-out party then maybe Copenhagen will be a celebration of our coming of age.”

He cautions, however, that growing up doesn’t mean playing it safe, eschewing civil disobedience in favour of staid meetings. “I hope we have grown up to become much more disobedient,” Jordan said, “because life on this world of ours may well be terminated because of too many acts of obedience.”

Well, the latest column I wrote for “The Nation,” is about this line that you can draw from Seattle to Copenhagen. I call the column “Seattle Grows Up,” because I think we’re also seeing an evolution of a movement that can to world attention on the streets of Seattle. I think there has been a profound deepening of the coalition between groups that are primarily focused on poverty, on development, on debt, and environmental groups that have traditionally been focused on environmental issues. We saw that in Seattle, the beginnings of that coalition, with the famous “Teamsters and Turtles” coalition. Now we are seeing something much deeper.

It is this idea of climate debt that is bringing together groups, like I was saying, Jubilee South, like Action Aid, groups that have been mostly focused on anti-poverty and development and are now are seeing climate change as the single greatest barrier to human development around the world, but also seen the call for climate reparation as an opportunity for, to quote Angelica Navarro, Bolivia’s ambassador to the climate negotiations, who I was talking about earlier, when she talks about the need for the developing world- developed world to pay our climate debt, she says if this happened and we would have a Marshall Plan for planet earth, which is a very exciting prospect because it means you have the opportunity to tackle simultaneously two of humanities most intransigent challenges, most intransigent problems, climate debt on the one hand, and inequality on the other. So, the bringing together of these two forces. That is what’s going to be really, really exciting in Copenhagen. And a lot of the people, a lot of networks that grew out of Seattle are going to be activated in Copenhagen and have only grown stronger in recent years.

Três autoridades de uma universidade são processadas por abrigar um portal de internet “suspeito”.

Nesta quarta-feira, 18 de novembro a justiça grega abriu processos criminais contra o reitor e dois vice-reitores do Instituto Politécnico de Atenas, acusados de autorizar o funcionamento de um site “suspeito” através do servidor deste estabelecimento.

Os três professores foram acusados de “negligência do dever” porque permitem o funcionamento do sítio do Indymedia, um portal de notícias alternativas, que tem repetidamente publicado os textos de reivindicação dos atentados do grupo anarquista grego “Conspiração das Células de Fogo”.

O promotor público de Atenas convocou os três responsáveis da universidade para deporem brevemente na presença de um magistrado.

O reitor da Escola Politécnica de Atenas, Kostas Moutzouris, reagiu fortemente após a acusação e disse que iria “resistir a qualquer tentativa de repressão de idéias” e do direito à liberdade de expressão.

Επίκαιρη ερώτηση υπέβαλε σήμερα ο βουλευτής του ΛαΟΣ, Άδωνις Γεωργιάδης, σχετικά με την ιστοσελίδα Indymedia, την οποία χαρακτήρισε «πειρατικώς εκπεμπόμενο σάιτ, το οποίο εκμεταλλεύεται το άσυλο για να προχωρεί σε έκνομες πράξεις». Ο υφυπουργός Παιδείας κ.Πανάρετος απάντησε με επιχείρημα το αυτοδιοίκητο των πανεπιστημίων.

Στην ερώτησή του, ο βουλευτής κ. Γεωργιάδης δήλωσε πως «το Indymedia είναι ένα πειρατικώς εκπεμπόμενο σάιτ, το οποίο εκμεταλλεύεται το άσυλο για να προχωρεί σε έκνομες πράξεις» και για παράδειγμα επικαλέστηκε ανάρτηση με την ταυτότητα φοιτητή προσκείμενου στο ΛαΟΣ, ο οποίος είχε δεχθεί επίθεση από «κουκουλοφόρους». Η λεζάντα της φωτογραφίας της ταυτότητας έγραφε «ιδού ο φασίστας, που δείρανε στη Θεολογική».

Ο βουλευτής του ΛΑΟΣ ανέφερε ότι όταν επικοινώνησε με τον πρύτανη κ. Σφακιανάκη, ο τελευταίος του γνωστοποίησε πως δεν μπορεί να κάνει τίποτα η Δίωξη Ηλεκτρονικού Εγκλήματος, γιατί αρνούνται να συνεργαστούν οι πρυτανικές αρχές. Ύστερα από τηλεφώνημά του, ο Πρύτανης αφαίρεσε την ανάρτηση.

Ο βουλευτής του ΛαΟΣ ανέγνωσε και κείμενο ανάρτησης στο «Ιντιμίντια», το οποίο αναφέρεται σε επίθεση κουκουλοφόρων στα ΜΑΤ : «ήταν υπέροχο να τους βλέπεις να υποφέρουν από τα δακρυγόνα και να μην ξέρουν πού να πάνε». Συμπλήρωσε ακόμα ότι αναρτήθηκε στην ίδια ιστοσελίδα κείμενο για τον εμπρησμό του βιβλιοπωλείου του με φράσεις όπως «τι ωραία που καίγεται το βιβλιοπωλείο του φασίστα».

«Τι σχέση έχουν αυτά με την ελευθερία των ιδεών, που επικαλέστηκε ψευδώς η υπουργός Παιδείας; Οι πρυτάνεις έχουν δικαίωμα να μη σέβονται τις δικαστικές αποφάσεις, όπως δήλωσαν, και αυτό να επαινείται από την κυρία Διαμαντοπούλου; Τα πανεπιστήμια είναι ανεξάρτητα κράτη με δικιά τους δικαιοσύνη;», διερωτήθηκε ο κ. Γεωργιάδης.

Ο υφυπουργός Παιδείας κ. Πανάρετος είπε πως θα ήταν λάθος στο να απαντήσει συγκεκριμένα για την ιστοσελίδα του Indymedia, γιατί θα κρινόταν το ζήτημα με βάση τις απόψεις που εκφράζονται εκεί. Υπογράμμισε πως αν κριθεί ότι υπάρχει παράνομης και εγκληματικής φύσεως περιεχόμενο σε οποιαδήποτε ιστοσελίδα, αυτό χρήζει διερεύνησης από τη Δίωξη Ηλεκτρονικού Εγκλήματος, ανεξάρτητα από το πού φιλοξενείται.

Δήλωσε επίσης ότι στην περίπτωση του ηλεκτρονικού βήματος η εκ των πραγμάτων στάση του πανεπιστημίου είναι παγίως θετική, όπως π.χ. οι ιστότοποι των φοιτητικών οργανώσεων. «Το ζήτημα δεν είναι η πρόσβαση στη δυνατότητα αυτή. Είναι με ποιες προϋποθέσεις δίνεται η δυνατότητα της φιλοξενίας ιστοσελίδων. Το ερώτημα, πώς αποφασίζεται αυτή η πρόσβαση στο συγκεκριμένο βήμα και με ποια κριτήρια θα αναρτηθεί μια σελίδα, η όχι. Με βάση την άποψη που εκφράζει, με βάση τη ταυτότητα του διαχειριστή της, με βάση τη σχέση του διαχειριστή με το πανεπιστήμιο (φοιτητική, ή κομματική ιδιότητα) κι εφόσον επιτρέπει την ανάρτηση, ποιες υποχρεώσεις απορρέουν από την χρήση, πόσοι πόροι διατίθενται και βάσει ποιού σχεδιασμού ή πολιτικής. Ποιοι είναι οι κανόνες. Αυτή είναι η οπτική γωνία σε σχέση με τη δυνατότητα έκφρασης άποψης, τη δυνατότητα πρόσβασης σε ένα ηλεκτρονικό βήμα. Κι αυτό, όσον αφορά τα πανεπιστήμια, μπορεί να καθοριστεί μόνον από αυτά» απάντησε ο κ.Πανάρετος.

συμπαράστασης στην Πρυτανεία του ΕΜΠ μετά την άσκηση δίωξης για τη λειτουργία του Ιndymedia.

Το Δ.Σ. της ΟΛΜΕ εκφράζει την συμπαράστασή του στις πρυτανικές  αρχές  του ΕΜΠ  μετά  την άσκηση δίωξης  για «παράβαση καθήκοντος και παρότρυνση υφισταμένων σε ανοχή», αποτέλεσμα της  αυτεπάγγελτης προκαταρτικής εξέτασης για τη λειτουργία της ιστοσελίδας  του athens indymedia που εξυπηρετείται από τον server του Πολυτεχνείου.

Η ιστοσελίδα που δημιουργήθηκε  στις αρχές  του 2000, έγινε διαδικτυακός τόπος  συνάντησης και ανταλλαγές απόψεων ετερόκλητων ιδεολογικά ατόμων και ομάδων. Ανάμεσα στα άλλα ανέδειξαν και ζητήματα που δεν φιλοξενούνται στα συμβατικά μέσα ενημέρωσης (δολοφονία Γρηγορόπουλου, μαθητικές κινητοποιήσεις του Δεκέμβρη, επίθεση στην Κων/να Κούνεβα, συνθήκες διαβίωσης μεταναστών, αυθαιρεσίες των επίσημων αρχών).

Η διαφωνία με το περιεχόμενο κάποιων απόψεων δε σημαίνει  ότι πρέπει να απαγορευτεί η ύπαρξή τους. Σε ένα εκπαιδευτικό ερευνητικό ίδρυμα που υποχρέωσή του είναι η προάσπιση των ελεύθερων ιδεών και απόψεων δεν ταιριάζει η προληπτική- κατασταλτική λογοκρισία.

Χρέος της δημοκρατίας είναι η δυνατότητα ελεύθερης έκφρασης όλων των ιδεών και δύναμή της η πειθώ.

Με βάση τα παραπάνω απαιτούμε την άμεση παύση της δίωξης των πρυτανικών αρχών του ΕΜΠ.

A couple updates from LexisNexis:

1) University Wire is suspended in LexisNexis (recently covered in the Chronicle of Higher Ed.).  Alistair Morrison,  Product Manager of LexisNexis Academic wrote that, “We continue to be in contact with the distributor of University Wire.  Based on our discussions we are cautiously optimistic that updates will resume, though we have not been given a target date.  We provide more information as we learn it.”

I’ll keep you updated on this.

2) Added to LexisNexis: The new “Discover America’s Story” source is a collection of small town newspaper articles.

Discover America’s Story focuses on small-town, rural, and “LOCAL” articles and reports on what is happening in-town and in-county while providing a local point of view on bigger issues such as state, regional, national politics and world affairs. The product is rich with articles relevant to geographic locations often under-reported or overlooked by mainstream news coverage such as natural resources, agriculture, land use, water rights and farming. “Small-town” news, op-ed, business, arts, government and life in general are covered well, plus published legal notices and obituaries are included.

WORLDS OF JOURNALISMS, FIRST DATA AVAILABLE

First comparative data from the Worlds of Journalisms project is now available for download from the project web site. The Worlds of Journalisms study set out to compare journalism cultures across nations, news organizations and professional milieus. Another major goal was to identify the driving forces behind still existing differences in journalistic cultures. The data is based on interviews with 1800 journalists working for 356 news organizations in 18 countries.

The study is one of the largest collaborative endeavors of journalism scholars from different countries. These countries include: Australia, Austria, Brazil, Bulgaria, Chile, China, Egypt, Germany, Indonesia, Israel, Mexico, Romania, Russia, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey, Uganda and the United States.

Ενα από τα βασικά προβλήματα σε αυτήν τη χώρα είναι ότι ποτέ δεν ξεκαθαρίζουμε έννοιες, όρια και αρμοδιότητες. Ολα μπερδεύονται σε ένα κουβάρι, άπαντες ασχολούνται με τα πάντα, με αποτέλεσμα όλη η χώρα να γίνεται ένα σκηνικό γκαγκ κωμωδίας. Πώς βλέπουμε στη μεγάλη οθόνη να ανάβει μια φωτιά κάπου και τρέχουν όλοι μαζί να τη σβήσουν, και μετά να ανάβει κάπου αλλού και να τρέχουν πάλι όλοι μαζί να τη σβήσουν, αφήνοντας την άλλη να φουντώνει; Ετσι ακριβώς γίνεται και στα δημόσια πράγματα, έτσι ακριβώς εξελίσσεται και η ιστορία με το indymedia.

Το athens. indymedia. org είναι ένας δικτυακός τόπος, στον οποίο συχνάζει και γράφει όλη η παλαβή Αριστερά για τα γνωστά, που διαβάζουμε και στις ελληνικές εφημερίδες: για τον καπιταλισμό που σκοτώνει, για το σοσιαλισμό που επιτίθεται, κι άλλα φαιδρά. Πολλές φορές η γλώσσα μόνο σεμνή δεν είναι, και γίνονται προσωπικές επιθέσεις κατά των «εχθρών του λαού». Ο γράφων έχει τιμηθεί πολλάκις από τις σελίδες αυτές με χίλια δυο επίθετα. Παρ’ όλα αυτά, μπορεί κάποιος κατά καιρούς να βρει και μερικά αξιόλογα κείμενα στο σωρό της ψευδοεπαναστατικότητας.

Είναι επόμενο, λοιπόν, να δαιμονοποιείται κατά καιρούς το indymedia. Η άγνοια και η συνωμοσιολογία το θέλει να είναι ο τόπος συντονισμού των έκνομων πράξεων. Είναι πιθανόν ότι αυτοί που τα σπάνε να είναι οι ίδιοι που γράφουν σ’ αυτόν τον δικτυακό τόπο, αλλά είναι ανόητο να πιστεύει κανείς ότι οι «μπαχαλάκηδες» θα συντόνιζαν τις πράξεις τους σε δημόσια θέα. Το αντίστοιχο στον φυσικό κόσμο θα ήταν να άνοιγαν γραφεία. Ετσι κι αλλιώς, είναι σίγουρο ότι οι διωκτικές αρχές παρακολουθούν στενά αυτόν κι άλλους δικτυακούς τόπους όπου ανθεί η αριστερίστικη ανοησία.

Το indymedia, όπως και άλλοι δικτυακοί τόποι φοιτητών (της ΔΑΠ, της ΠΑΣΠ κ. λπ.), «στεγάζεται» σε υπολογιστές του Μετσόβιου Πολυτεχνείου. Οταν λέμε «στεγάζεται», εννοούμε ότι τα κείμενα, φωτογραφίες κ. λπ. βρίσκονται σε κάποιον υπολογιστή του Ιδρύματος. Το κόστος για το ίδρυμα, με τιμές αγοράς, είναι περί τα 100 ευρώ το χρόνο. Δεν είναι μεγάλο, αλλά μπαίνει ένα θέμα αρχής: μπορεί να χρησιμοποιείται δημόσια περιουσία, από κάποιους που δηλώνουν εχθροί της («αστικής», όπως την αποκαλούν οι ίδιοι) Δημοκρατίας; Φυσικά, στο βαθμό που η λειτουργία αυτή παραμένει στο χώρο των ιδεών και δεν έχει φυσικά αποτελέσματα. Με άλλα λόγια, σε ένα πανεπιστήμιο μπορεί να λέει οποιοσδήποτε ό, τι θέλει, αρκεί να μην εμποδίζει και τους άλλους να λένε ό, τι θέλουν. Μια κατάληψη πανεπιστημιακού χώρου είναι διαφορετικό πράγμα: μπορεί να προβάλλει ένα αίτημα, αλλά ταυτοχρόνως εμποδίζει όλους τους υπόλοιπους να προβάλλουν τις δικές τους ιδέες. Το indymedia, ακόμη κι αν ενοχλεί, από μόνο του, καλύπτεται από τις αρχές της αστικής δημοκρατίας και της πανεπιστημιακής ελευθερίας – άσχετα αν οι φιλοξενούμενοι σ’ αυτό μισούν και τη μία και την άλλη. Οσο κι αν φαντάζει περίεργο, η αστική δημοκρατία δίνει χώρο ακόμη και στους εχθρούς της· σε επίπεδο λόγου μόνο και ουχί πράξεων. Οι έκνομες πράξεις πρέπει να τιμωρούνται. Εκνομος λόγος, δεν πρέπει να υπάρχει.

Δεν ξέρουμε με ποιο σκεπτικό ο εισαγγελέας αποφάσισε να ασκήσει ποινική δίωξη κατά των πρυτανικών αρχών, αν και δεν πρέπει να μας εκπλήσσει η πρωτοβουλία αυτή. Στην Ελλάδα έχουν διωχθεί δικαστικά συγγραφείς και σκιτσογράφοι για μικρότερα του indymedia «αμαρτήματα». Ετσι κι αλλιώς, η ελευθερία της έκφρασης στην Ελλάδα είναι κάτι σαν ακορντεόν: υπάρχει μόνο όταν ο λόγος δεν ενοχλεί, ενώ θα έπρεπε να ισχύει το αντίθετο. «Το Σύνταγμα φτιάχτηκε για τις απόψεις που ενοχλούν», έγραψε ο Αμερικανός νομικός Mike Godwin. «Τις άλλες, έτσι κι αλλιώς, δεν θέλει να τις λογοκρίνει κανείς». Στη σημερινή συγκυρία πρόβλημα θα δημιουργηθεί αν τελικά το indymedia φύγει από το ΕΜΠ. Οχι διότι θα χάσουμε τα λίγα καλά κείμενα μέσα στον οχετό της επαναστατικότητας· το περιεχόμενο μπορεί να μεταφερθεί κάπου αλλού. Το βασικό πρόβλημα είναι πολιτικό. Η δίωξη καθαυτή προσφέρει στους καταχραστές του ασύλου ένα ισχυρό επιχείρημα. Αν ένα ΑΕΙ δεν μπορεί να προσφέρει άσυλο στις ανοησίες, δεν θα μπορέσει να προσφέρει άσυλο σε καμία ιδέα.

Ανακοίνωση για το indymedia

Λίγες ημέρες πριν την επέτειο της 17^ης Νοέμβρη, οι δικαστικές αρχές βάλθηκαν να μας αποδείξουν ότι, παρά τα 35 χρόνια Μεταπολίτευσης, η ελεύθερη διακίνηση ιδεών εξακολουθεί να αποτελεί «κίνδυνο» και πρέπει να αποτρέπεται. Αυτή τη φορά, τους ενόχλησε η λειτουργία του site Indymedia, το οποίο «φιλοξενείται» από τον κεντρικό server του Εθνικού Μετσόβιου Πολυτεχνείου εδώ και 8 χρόνια περίπου. Άσκησαν, λοιπόν, ποινική δίωξη για παράβαση καθήκοντος στον πρύτανη του Ιδρύματος, κ. Μουτζούρη και τους αντιπρυτάνεις κ. Πολύζο και κ. Σπαθή. Αφορμή στάθηκε το γεγονός ότι στο Indymedia αναρτώνται οι προκηρύξεις της οργάνωσης «Συνομωσίες των Πυρήνων της Φωτιάς».

Η συγκεκριμένη ιστοσελίδα τα τελευταία δύο χρόνια έχει δεχτεί πλήθος καταγγελιών και έχει βρεθεί στο στόχαστρο αρκετών ακροδεξιών βουλευτών του Λ.Α.Ο.Σ. .Υπάρχει μέχρι και γκρουπ στο Facebook εναντίον της! Ωστόσο, το πρόβλημα δεν είναι η «τρομοκρατική» της δράση. Άλλωστε, και πολλά Μέσα Μαζικής Ενημέρωσης κατά καιρούς έχουν φιλοξενήσει προκηρύξεις. Αυτό που ενοχλεί είναι πως στο Indymedia προβάλλονται διαφορετικές πολιτικές απόψεις, εντελώς ασύμβατες με τις κατεστημένες αντιλήψεις της mediaκης πραγματικότητας, τις οποίες θεωρούν επικίνδυνες.

Εμείς, ως Αριστερή Ενότητα, έχουμε επίσης διαφωνήσει πολλές φορές με το περιεχόμενο των δημοσιεύσεων στον συγκεκριμένο ιστότοπο. Ωστόσο, αρνούμαστε να δεχτούμε πως οι ιδέες, όσο κι αν διαφοροποιούνται από τις δικές μας, πρέπει να φιμώνονται. Κάθε άνθρωπος, ό,τι κι αν πιστεύει, έχει το δικαίωμα να το εκφράσει, όπως και όπου ο ίδιος θέλει. Είμαστε ενάντια σε κάθε μορφή λογοκρισίας, ακόμα κι αν είναι ντυμένη ένα μανδύα «νομιμότητας». Γι’ αυτό στεκόμαστε στο πλευρό των πρυτανικών αρχών του Ε.Μ.Π. και ζητάμε την άμεση άρση των κατηγοριών.

Την πασίγνωστη φράση του Βολταίρου «Διαφωνώ με αυτά που λες αλλά θα υπερασπίζομαι μέχρι θανάτου το δικαίωμά σου να τα λες» επικαλείται το Πολυτεχνείο της Αθήνας για τη φιλοξενία της ιστοσελίδας Ιndymedia και δηλώνει ότι δεν πρόκειται να εμποδίσει τη λειτουργία της, παρά την ποινική δίωξη που ασκήθηκε εναντίον των πρυτανικών αρχών.

Η απαγγελία κατηγοριών για παράβαση καθήκοντος κατά του πρύτανη Κ. Μουτζούρη και των αντιπρυτάνεων του ΕΜΠ Ι. Πολύζου και Γερ. Σπαθή, παραμονές του εορτασμού της 36ης επετείου από την εξέγερση, προκάλεσε χθες θύελλα αντιδράσεων τόσο στο Πολυτεχνείο της Αθήνας όσο και στα υπόλοιπα Πανεπιστήμια. Οι πρυτανικές αρχές του ιδρύματος ανακοίνωσαν χθες ότι θα προσφύγουν στο Συμβούλιο Εφετών, ζητώντας την ακύρωση της παραπομπής τους σε δίκη.

Η υπουργός Παιδείας Άννα Διαμαντοπούλου τάχθηκε εμμέσως υπέρ των πρυτανικών αρχών: «Δεν θα κρίνω τη Δικαιοσύνη. Θεωρώ ότι οι πρυτανικές αρχές απαντούν με επάρκεια και θέτουν τα ζητήματα στη σωστή τους βάση. Ζούμε σε μια ελεύθερη κοινωνία. Αλίμονο αν βάλουμε μπροστά το θέμα του φόβου. Νομίζω ότι πάνω από όλα είναι η ελευθερία της σκέψης και της έκφρασης», είπε χαρακτηριστικά.

Οι περισσότεροι πρυτάνεις, ανάμεσα στους οποίους οι πρυτάνεις του Πανεπιστημίου Αθηνών Χρ. Κίττας και Πατρών Στ. Κουμπιάς, τάχθηκαν επίσης με το μέρος του Πολυτεχνείου και μάλιστα έκαναν λόγο για παραιτήσεις. Οι φοιτητές επίσης αντέδρασαν και πέντε Σχολές του Πολυτεχνείου εξέδωσαν ψηφίσματα υπέρ της συνέχισης λειτουργίας του Ιndymedia. Αντίθετα άλλοι πανεπιστημιακοί, ανάμεσα στους οποίους ο πρύτανης του Πολυτεχνείου Κρήτης Ιωακ. Γρυσπολάκης, εκφράστηκαν αρνητικά.

Ο κ. Μουτζούρης, μιλώντας χθες στα «ΝΕΑ», έκανε λόγο για παραβίαση της ουσίας του πανεπιστημιακού ασύλου από την Εισαγγελία, δεδομένου ότι το άσυλο υπάρχει ακριβώς για την προστασία της ελεύθερης διακίνησης των ιδεών.

Το Ιndymedia- Ανεξάρτητο Κέντρο Πληροφόρησης σύμφωνα με τους εμπνευστές του- παρουσιάζεται ως «μια παγκόσμια συλλογικότητα οργανώσεων ανεξάρτητης ενημέρωσης και εκατοντάδων δημοσιογράφων που προσφέρουν συλλογική και μη-εμπορευματική ενημέρωση».

«Παιδί» των επεισοδίων του Δεκεμβρίου του 1999 στο Σιάτλ, όταν χιλιάδες διαδηλωτές συμμετείχαν στις κινητοποιήσεις κατά του Παγκόσμιου Οργανισμού Εμπορίου. Εκατοντάδες ακτιβιστές από μέσα ενημέρωσης, στην πλειονότητα τους Αμερικανοί, είχαν αναζητήσει έναν εναλλακτικό τρόπο ενημέρωσης για ό,τι θα συνέβαινε στην αμερικανική μεγαλούπολη στη διάρκεια της Συνόδου.

Αρχικά αποφασίστηκε η έκδοση της εφημερίδας «Τhe Βlind Spot» και η λειτουργία της ιστοσελίδας του Ανεξάρτητου Κέντρου Πληροφόρησης Σιάτλ. Τα επεισόδια που σημειώθηκαν στη διάρκεια της Συνόδου ανέδειξε ιδιαίτερα η ενημέρωση από την ιστοσελίδα, η οποία δέχθηκε περισσότερες από 1,5 εκατομμύριο επισκέψεις στη διάρκεια ενός τριημέρου. Η απρόσμενη επιτυχία είχε ως αποτέλεσμα τα Ανεξάρτητα Κέντρα Πληροφόρησης (ΙΜC) να γνωρίσουν μεγάλη άνθηση αρχικά στις αμερικανικές μεγαλουπόλεις. Τον Φεβρουάριο του 2000 σχηματίστηκε ένα μικρό ΙΜC στη Βοστώνη, ενώ τον Απρίλιο άλλο ένα, μεγαλύτερο, δημιουργήθηκε στην Ουάσιγκτον, για να καλύψει τις διαδηλώσεις κατά της Παγκόσμιας Τράπεζας και του ΔΝΤ. Στα επόμενα δύο χρόνια δημιουργήθηκαν 70 Ιndymedia παγκοσμίως ενώ υπάρχει στην Ελλάδα σε Αθήνα, Θεσσαλονίκη και Πάτρα.

Δίωξη ασκήθηκε από την Εισαγγελία Αθηνών σε βάρος του πρύτανη Κ. Μουτζούρη και των αντιπρυτάνεων του Εθνικού Μετσόβιου Πολυτεχνείου Γ. Πολύζου και Γερ. Σπαθή, ύστερα από προκαταρκτική εξέταση και αφορά στη λειτουργία της ιστοσελίδας του αθηναϊκού indymedia μέσω των υποδομών του ΕΜΠ.

Η ποινική δίωξη που ασκήθηκε είναι για την πλημμεληματικού χαρακτήρα κατηγορία της παράβασης καθήκοντος. Η κατηγορία της παράβασης καθήκοντος στηρίζεται στην άποψη ότι ο ηλεκτρονικός κόμβος Indymedia δεν μπορεί να έχει έδρα εντός του πανεπιστημιακού ιδρύματος, αφού δεν αποτελεί εκπαιδευτική ή ερευνητική δραστηριότητα.

Η δίωξη ανακοινώθηκε από τον πρύτανη του ΕΜΠ, χθες ημέρα της επετείου της εξέγερσης του πολυτεχνείου, που δήλωσε ότι η πρυτανεία θα αντιταχθεί στις “προσπάθειες για την επιβολή λογοκρισίας στα μηνύματα που εκπέμπονται απο το χώρο του Ιδρύματος”.

Με ανακοίνωσή τους οι πρυτανικες αρχές δηλώσαν ότι  «το Πολυτεχνείο, ως εκπαιδευτικό και ερευνητικό ίδρυμα, επιφυλάσσει αποκλειστικά σε αυτό, όπως κάνουν και όλα τα άλλα ΑΕΙ την κρίση για το τι συνιστά τους “εκπαιδευτικούς και ερευνητικούς σκοπούς” και το πώς αυτό συνδέεται όχι μόνο με την ελεύθερη διακίνηση των ιδεών, αλλά και την καταγραφή τους. Το ΕΜΠ δεν προβαίνει σε ενέργειες προληπτικής ή κατασταλτικής λογοκρισίας ανεξάρτητα από το ιδεολογικό και πολιτικό χάσμα που μπορεί να το χωρίζει από τις απόψεις που εκφράζονται».

Η ιστοσελίδα του αθηναϊκού indymedia λειτουργεί  εδώ και οκτώ χρόνια και αποτελεί μέρος του διεθνούς δικτύου Indymedia που αποτελεί  “μια παγκόσμια συλλογικότητα οργανώσεων ανεξάρτητης ενημέρωσης και εκατοντάδων δημοσιογράφων που προσφέρουν συλλογική και μη-εμπορευματική ενημέρωση“.

Η λειτουργία του συγκεκριμένου site απασχόλησε πρόσφατα και τη Βουλή όταν βουλευτές του ΛΑΟΣ είχαν καταθέσει προεκλογικά σχετικές ερωτήσεις στη Βουλή, ζητώντας το κλείσιμο του κόμβου. Από την άλλη, και ο ΟΤΕ πίεσε για το κλείσιμο της ιστοσελίδας, καθώς με εξώδικο στα μέσα του καλοκαιριού εστράφη κατά του Εθνικού Δικτύου Ερευνας και Τεχνολογίας και ζήτησε η χρήση των οπτικών ινών που προσφέρει για τα πανεπιστήμια να γίνεται μόνο για εκπαιδευτικούς σκοπούς, με βάση τη σύμβαση μεταξύ των δύο φορέων.

For those undecided about whether or not citizen journalists should be protected under shield laws designed to protect print journalists, there’s news that may hasten the decision. CBS reports that on January 23^rd, 2009, Philadelphia-based liberal blog Indymedia.us received a formal request from the U.S. Department of Justice requesting “all IP traffic to and from www.indymedia.us” on June 25, 2008. This was to include “include IP addresses, times, and any other identifying information.”

In short, it’s asking for a list of everyone who visited the website that day, as identifiable by their IP addresses (think of it as your computer’s address), along any other identifying information. The amount of “other identifying information” on the servers of the news site is probably no more than e-mail addresses, but if they did have any more information, such as physical addresses, names, etc, they’d be required to turn them over.

The subpoena also instructed the website to “not disclose instance of this request” without consent of the Justice Department. It would seem gag orders are harder to impose on the Internet crowd than they might think. The subpoena has since been withdrawn, and no one seems to want to talk about it.

Indymedia falls in a particularly gray area when considering journalistic merits. Rather than a publisher, it identifies itself as a “newswire,” which allows users to self-publish work – not all of which is journalistically sound. This makes the website impossible to judge as a whole, rather than the sum of its parts.

The legality of all this would be questionable at best if bloggers were treated as journos. Subpoenas served to journalists are supposed to be treated with a specific set of guidelines set up specifically because of the importance of a free press, to protect news organizations from government harassment that interferes with the reporting process.

It is also worrisome that the US Attorney General did not approve the subpoena, as guidelines for subpoenaing news organizations indicate he should have. If the DOJ won’t treat bloggers as journalists now, it stands to reason that they can expect the same treatment in the future.

While the DOJ subpoena may not in the strictest sense interfere with the reporting process, consider what would happen if the guys in black suits knocked on the door of the Nation, or the Weekly Standard, and demanded all records and identifying information of subscribers.

The actions of the DOJ make it apparent that they don’t consider bloggers journalists – which some aren’t.

But some are.

And all the while, as we debate the merits of citizen journalism, the government seems to have already recognized its potential power.

Ergebnis ist, dass die Bildungschancen inzwischen extrem ungleich verteilt sind. Geld für Schulbücher, Schul- und Studiengebühren oder Private Nachhilfe. Wer keine reichen Eltern hat, hat es zunehmend schwerer, nicht abgehängt zu werden: Schlechte Lernbedingungen, steigende Klassengrößen und Ausfallszeiten bei immer größerem Leistungsdruck. Jedes Jahr warten zudem tausende Leute vergeblich auf einen Ausbildungsplatz und immer weniger Menschen können sich ein Studium leisten.

This is alarming.  If the Department of Justice is wiling to go this far than those of us who comment, post and blog online are at risk.  What no one can figure out is why they did this and then retracted it.
