I am almost certain that I will die a horrible and excruciating death for taking this long to recognize the FDO’s print debut title Infected. Before it became a print novel it gathered quiet a following as a podio-book. Now unlike most of the others I have reviewed Infected does not have a full cast. Scott Sigler himself reads the novel with a lot of feeling and well at times anger. Infected centers around Perry Dawsey and his fight against his violent past but once infected he must embrace his violent tendencies in his fight to survive. This horror thriller will keep you at the edge of your seat and itching for more! I’ll tell you in listening to this for the first time I was starting to worry about that odd itch on my arm..

The infection changes everything.

Strange microscopic parasites tap into Perry’s bloodstream like tiny little vampires. They start as bright orange blisters, but soon take the shape of triangular growths just beneath his skin. The “Triangles,” as Perry calls them, try to control their host by manipulating hormone levels and flooding his body with neurotransmitters — imbalances of which cause paranoia, schizophrenia and excessive aggression. As Perry begins a desperate battle to cut the Triangles out of his body before it’s too late, his self-control dissolves into raging, murderous madness.

We have just seen a band known as Illidiance. This is a well known heavy metal act that came out of Russia. They are an emerging cyber metal act with two full length albums titled “Insane Mytheries To Demise” which was released in 2006 and “Nexaeon” which was released in 2008. The band members consist of Dymm Xyrohn on guitars and main vocals, Serge “Infinity” on the guitars, Tommy Gun “Syrex” on bass/voice and Mike “Sockor” on the drums. Needless to say, my other roommates and I just freaked out upon hearing this and went on a cleaning spree through the suite, wiping door knobs and opening windows and tossing anythig she had touched that we didn’t need. We were like convinced that we were getting it because we all have some variation of a cough/sniffly nose/sore throat but none of us have had fevers.

But I mean, realistically, although she lived with us, we’re not as likely to get it, because she has been sick on and off all semester and has done very little about it. Like she refuses to take medicine unless it’s a cough drop, which doesn’t count. Although I’m supposed to get the regular flu shot on Thursday, but I’m worried I won’t be able to because I’m not in full health, and since I’m in the infected room, I’m still kind of worried. Plus I’ve been calling my father all day trying to get him to bring me a thermometer.

This is too much to deal with.

People love zombie movies.  Ever since the black and white ‘Dawn of the Dead’ debuted back in the ’60’s, this genre has just spread.  I will confess that I have watched my share of these movies over the years. One of the most chilling in my opinion was 28 Days Later. I actually loved the direct tie to a government lab that was testing a bioweapon called ‘rage’ on some animals. These well-intentioned tree-huggers release the animals, unleashing this plague on England.

Well, it’s a good thing that these are just movies right?  No zombies walking around that we have to avoid being infected by?

The horrid truth is that it is too late for you.  You were born infected. So was I.  We walk around dying everyday. Our spirit is a gaping black hole, and we wander about for things to fill it. We choose drugs, booze, music, sex, movies, work… you name it.  And usually we avoid the one thing that can cure us… The Cross.

For those of us who have been given spiritual life, we walk around, day after day, surrounded by the living dead.  What are you going to do about it?  You look just like them, you could just blend in and be safe.  Or you might try to spread the cure that they so desperately need.

You should speak up. They may thank you for your courage someday.

There are actually many ways to get infected with the contagious disease and in this article are described most of those, which have been officially announced to be reasonably highly potential. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) sometimes people may become infected after touching a surface or object on which influenza viruses have been left by an infected person or animal and shortly afterwards touch their nose or mouth, an extremely risky action.

To help minimalize number of infected people with the dangerous virus, WHO gives the following tips to reduce the possibility of contamination with seasonal flu:

1. Avoid touching your mouth and nose with dirty hands.

2. Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water or clean them regularly with wet wipes containing alcohol (especially when touching your mouth and nose or potentially contaminated surfaces or objects).
3. Avoid close contact with people who may be sick.
4. Reduce, if possible of course, the time you spend in crowded places.
5. Regularly ventilate your living quarters.
6. Try to lead a healthier lifestyle, including full sleep, diet (more fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains and lean meats) and physical activity.

To reduce the spread of seasonal viral infections the Center for Disease Control and Prevention also advises:
1. Cover your nose and mouth with a handkerchief when coughing or sneezing. Throw wipes up immediately after you have used them.
2. Wash your hands regularly using soap and sometimes mineral water, especially after sneezing and coughing. Wet wipes containing alcohol are also effective.

3. Avoid close contact with sick people.

If you are suffering from flu, CDC recommends that you stay home at least 24 hours after the fever passes and this is just in case you do not need medical treatment or medical goods (your fever must be resolved without the use of fever-reducing drugs) . Try to isolate yourself as far as possible and stay away from your family members to reduce the risk of infecting them or other people around you.

Infections and the undead have been a prominent subject matter in films, even long before George A. Romero made Night of the Living Dead. Unfortunately, today’s audience isn’t so scared of something or someone coming back from the dead to eat them. Rather, what really strikes fear into today’s populace is the new pandemic on the horizon, whether bird flu or swine flu, which hits without warning and threatens to destroy the world without any care of who or what you are. No matter how unfounded, irrational, or illogical these fears may be, mass hysteria always takes a hold of people, and these folks are deathly afraid of these maladies. And long before the video game Left 4 Dead addicted gamers or Quarantine only mildly entertained some people, a British director by the name of Danny Boyle came and frightened audiences with the horrific film that is 28 Days Later.

This film is a lot of things; part drama film, part horror film, part post-apocalyptic sci-fi film, it’s one of the finest crafted incarnations of this genre that has been made yet. Cillian Murphy plays Jim, a lowly London bicycle courier who was knocked into a coma before waking up from it twenty-eight days after a mass infection (“rage”) has more or less destroyed Great Britain population. He doesn’t know what’s happened or where everyone’s gone, and leaves the hospital collecting small items and cash along the way, until a run in with a church full of infected Brits causes him to be saved by a woman named Selena and the doomed Mark, who fill him in on all he’s missed. The trio eventually become a duo, which then eventually becomes a family when a man named Frank and his adolescent daughter Hannah join the group, but the family quickly turns back into a trio, as is the fashion of any “infected persons” film. The story is all about survival in the face of annihilation and how the people who have been spared from being killed by their infected countrymen carry on with their lives when they know any day could be their last.

One of the film’s major charms is it’s look, which wasn’t photographed on normal 35mm film stock but rather taped on digital video via a Canon XL1 camcorder by Anthony Dod Mantle, who would go on to win an Oscar for his cinematography on Slumdog Millionaire, also directed by Boyle. The aesthetics accurately capture the mood of each scene, and even when something isn’t chasing our protagonists we never feel like they’re completely safe. The film’s soundtrack is also well thought out, ranging from songs like Grandaddy’s “AM 180″ to Faure’s “In Paradisum”, and the original score by John Murphy sets the tone for each scene, matching fantastic crescendos to the character’s rising emotional tension. 28 Days Later is the “zombie” movie that normal zombie movies just can’t touch, and despite having been released seven years ago, it still lives at the top.

Conficker Virus, also known as Downup, Downadup, and Kido, has passed a dubious milestone of infecting more than 7 million computers. On 29^th Nov 09, researchers at the Shadowserver Foundation logged more than 7 million unique IP address all known to have been infected by Conficker. Shadowserver foundation is a volunteer-run organization that gathers intelligence on the darker side of the internet. Lets us take a few minutes to go through the worm’s life cycle.

A Walkthrough

Conficker worm was first detected on Nov 2008, and targets Microsoft Windows OS. It uses flaws in the Windows software to co-opt machines and links them into virtual computer that can be commanded remotely by its authors. Unlike common worms, it uses a combination of advanced malware techniques that made it difficult to counter, and has since spread rapidly, entitling it the largest computer worm infection since SQL Slammer (2003).

Currently there are 5 variant of the Conficker worm, namely A, B, C, D and E. It attacks servers, workstations, and eve spreads to locally attached memory devices such as USB flash drives. Plugging the infected flash drive into a new PC effectively spreads the infection and continues the cycle.

Impact

The French Navy computer network was infected with Conficker on 15^th January 2009. Consequently, the network was quarantined, forcing aircraft at several airbases to be grounded because their flight plans was unavailable.

UK Ministry of Defense reported that some of its major systems and desktops were infected. The worm spread across administrative offices, across Royal Navy warships and submarines, and hospitals across the city of Sheffield.

The Unified armed forces of Federal Republic of Germany reported about 100 computers of being infected with the worm.

This is just a few from Europe. If we Google, we can see how widespread the worm is.

Motive

Despite its spread, the worm has rarely been used by the creators who control it. But, why, one might wonder. Are they afraid, since so many computers over so many countries have been infected, the consequence they would face is enormous or is there a larger scheme involved that we are not able to see? Imagine, if this worm is used for a Distributed Denial of Service attack, for instance. The destruction it will lay in its path would be unimaginable.

“This is certainly a botnet that could be weaponized,” says Andre DiMino, co-founder of Shadowserver. “When you have a net of this magnitude, the sky’s the limit in terms of what could be done.”

Patch available, but infection is still spreading

Microsoft released an out-of band patch release to counter Conficker. Yet, the number of infected systems rose. The main reason is that, most of the infected systems are running boot-legged OS or illegal versions of OS. Hence, the patches are unavailable to them.

WANTED – Dead or Alive

As of 13^th Feb 209, Microsoft is offering $250,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the individuals responsible for the creation of Conficker. Some, working group member report of locating the authors based in Ukraine, in early 2009, but for confidential reasons the investigation is still ongoing.

Die diesjährige Preisverleihung fand im Rahmen der animago AWARD & CONFERENCE statt. Die animago CONFERENCE wurde in Zusammenarbeit mit Lichtblick 4D ausgerichtet. Die Neukonzeption des animago AWARD hat voll überzeugt. Die Veranstaltung hat gezeigt, welchen Stellenwert die 3D-Branche in der Gesellschaft hat. Alles ist digital. Reiter, die Brücke nebst Distruction-Set wurden mit 3ds Max und VRay sowie diversen externen und hauseigenen Rigid Body Simulationssystemen realisiert.

Inhalt: Mit dem „TDI Clean Diesel-System“ hat Audi den saubersten Dieselmotor der Welt entwickelt. Die Aufgabe bestand darin, diesen technisch komplizierten Prozess im Katalysator einfach und dramatisch zu erzählen und dafür eine völlig neue visuelle Sprache zu finden. Die Grundidee für den Spot war einfach: Aus einem Alphabet werden 97 % aller Buchstaben gefiltert, 3 % kommen am Ende durch und zwar T, D und I. Wichtig war es den Filter an sich – nicht als ein technisch, abstraktes Gerät darzustellen, sondern viel mehr seine Funktion mit Hilfe einer außergewöhnlich Bildsprache sichtbar zu machen.

Inhalt: Sie schnurrt, sie faucht, sie frisst – iKitty erinnert ein wenig an Garfield, der vierpfotige Schnurrbartträger lebt aber auf dem iPhone. Der virtuelle Katzenhalter hat verschiedene Möglichkeiten, das Kätzchen bei Laune zu halten. Tut man das nicht und setzt iKitty zum Beispiel einem Schleudertrauma aus, beendet das derart malträtierte Kätzchen einfach das Programm – eine halbe Stunde muss man warten, bis sich iKitty wieder streicheln und füttern lässt.

Das Duo Dummer August und Weißer Clown tritt getrennt auf, repräsentativ für eine zunehmend polarisierte Welt, die durchsetzt ist von Normen und Regeln. Als unfreiwilliger Clown auf die Leinwand eines Kinos projiziert und von einem ahnungslosen Publikum auf voyeuristische Art und Weise beobachtet und gedemütigt, findet er schließlich zu sich selbst und seinem Archetyp, dem sogenannten Trickster.

     As some of you many know (and a great deal more may not) I am a huge L4D fan.  Not only does the game itself provide almost exactly what I’ve been looking for as far as zombie/multiplayer games go, the humor that’s stemmed from the hugely successful title cannot be denied.  It’s true, I have a hard time NOT thinking of the survivors when i hear the word “pills”, and with every car alarm I worry that I’ll hear that tell-tale howling that marks the rapid approach of zombified cityfolk.

Yesterday, the new trailer to Left 4 Dead 2 has been leaked. Nobody knows (or cares) how it was leaked. So, be prepared to get teamkilled by everybody in L4D2 when Coach realizes that you were supposed to be saving their chocolate, which you had a slight change of plans with.

Kept getting e-mails asking me why haven’t I made a list of special infected on my blog. Its because there’s a Wiki for that but okay I’ll make a list. I don’t see the point now though, the game comes out soon and people will have the demo before then. Whatever though…

No the Screamer will not be in Left 4 Dead 2. It was supposed to be in Left 4 Dead 1 but they cut that infected for another. No you will not be able to play as the old survivors in the new game and no they will not be infected in the new game either. No the Boycott did not succeed in what they were asking for although they think they did.
