American games magazine Game Informer has just revealed a brand new transformers game, named Transfor

American games magazine Game Informer has just revealed a brand new transformers game, named Transformers: The War For Cybertron.

Thankfully this is a non-movie tie in and is being developed by High Moon, who brought us the Bourne Conspiracy game.

It seems to be using a similiar style to the War Withing comics with the transformers using there original non-earth modes.

Playing out in a third person shooter it will follow the Autobots fight against the Decepticons and vice versa.
the choice to allow players to play as both sides is a great addition and should keep many fans of the series happy.

At this point only these characters have been confirmed as playable:

Autobots:
Optimus Prime
Bumblebee
Ratchet

Decepticons:
Megatron
Thundercracker

but promotional graphics also show Soundwave and Ironhide who may also be playable characters.

Currently the game is set for a 2010 release.

Dear Santa, Hi. This is Kelly. I am an almost 23-year-old blonde chick living in a really windy town

Dear Santa,
Hi. This is Kelly. I am an almost 23-year-old blonde chick living in a really windy town, at least it is tonight, in northern Ohio. You’re probably where Ohio is, it’s below Michigan and where that one football team always wins. I’m sure you root for them, you wear their colors like everyday. We need to have a talk. See, I want some things, things I’m sure you can pull some strings and help me get. Because I’m getting older, I had to ask for more needs than wants, and that really sucked. Because just because I need dress socks doesn’t mean I don’t want slipper socks to wear around the apartment when the toes get cold. I need money, and I want money, so that’s a good compromise. But here, let me put things in the most simplest of terms. Give me what I want, Tubby, or Mrs. Clause gets it.

Kidding, maybe you shouldn’t have gotten me all those violent Dolph Lundgren movies as a kid, eh? Lies. I love Dolph. Here are five things that as of tonight I think I want. This is one of many letters this season. Get ready.

1. The winning numbers to the lotto. I feel like if I won the lottery, I’d be happy again. Student loans would be paid, my mom would end up living in a nice retirement community probably next door to Neil Diamond who would be a robot by then because I’d use money to ensure he lived forever. My sister would be awesome, per usual. My brother would be a tool, but hey, he already is. He’d just look better. My friends would get what they want. My family would be set. And the Kelly Metz School of Journalism at BGSU would be well under way.

2. Dolph Lundgren to dress as Heman for my next birthday party. Because when he yells “I have the power!” he really does. That was weird…

3. An endless supply of… hmm… Doritos? Maybe. Cookies?! Maybe. No no. 7 eleven slurpees. That’s right, I went there.
“The Window” December 7th, 2009 There are moments where it feels as if Robin Scherbatsky

“The Window”

December 7th, 2009

There are moments where it feels as if Robin Scherbatsky exists entirely to be ignorant to the various long-standing mythologies that exist in How I Met Your Mother’s universe. Inevitably, when something new to us is introduced, Robin is the one asking “what’s that?” And such we enter “The Window,” as we discover (through Robin) that Ted Mosby has been on a nine-year journey to bag a college pal and yet has been foiled every time.

The way the show is able to use Robin to justify its exposition, almost always told through a casual conversation at McLaren’s or in Ted and Robin’s apartment, is part of why these stories are able to move so smoothly. In just moments, the stage has been set for what is yet another potential love story waiting to happen, fate and destiny fighting against reality. And by nicely balancing some more emotional beats for Josh Radner’s Ted with some broader comedy as the rest of the gang tries to keep the window from closing, the episode manages to entertain while also providing the sort of heartwarming conclusion (albeit with a twist) that HIMYM is so great at.

There’s been some complaints that there hasn’t been a lot of Ted stories this year, so it’s fitting that “The Window” is all about Ted Mosby without actually involving Ted Mosby to the degree that would have made the episode less engaging (since, no matter where you stand on the character, too much Ted is never good for the show). When we learn that he’s had a crush living in New York for nine years that he’s always wanted to ask out but never had the opportunity, it’s a good excuse for the character to ask himself whether he’s ready to be one of her long-term boyfriends. The character has reached this point in the past, considering when a long-term relationship is something he really wants, and since Stella he’s been resistant to these sorts of opportunities. And yet, with a single phone call he acted reflexively, getting to Maggie Wilkes before every other suitor thanks to tipping off her elderly neighbour.

And what happens with Ted then it what makes the episode work: by having Ted forced to head into his class, it allows the character to investigate his feelings without having to test whether he and Maggie would actually make a good couple (since, after all, he has no evidence of this beyond her reputation as the ultimate girl next door. As such, his class (who seems to genuinely like the guy, which in turn makes them his favourite people on the planet) become a therapy group, and he’s able to talk through his relationship troubles with a group of people who aren’t able to say “Dude, remember what happened with Robin?” or “But what about Stella?” or anything else. It doesn’t change the fact that Ted has been here before, but it was a different audience for his concerns and represents a strong creative decision.

It also allows that could have been an overly serious episode to still fall strongly on the side of comedy. As Lily and Marshall, Robin and then Barney are made responsible for Maggie staying unattached for the remainder of the evening, each of them forced to peel off for one reason or another created by the plot of the episode, the show is able to play with some fun combinations and allow some characters to have moments of their own and others to just play outright comedy. I think Barney’s characterization was probably the leakiest (boom boom yeah) of the bunch, if only because Barney didn’t actually get to do much with the overalls and the final realization that Barney is willing to have sex with the elderly neighbour just felt like the show going too far for me personally.

But I thought Cobie Smulders had almost too much fun in the episode, to the point where I kind of feel like they broke up Robin and Barney so that they could have Robin back in scenarios like this one. There’s some episodes where Robin seems pulled back from Barney’s comedy, but there was a fun dynamic here as Robin just started running off Farmer jokes, and then transitioned into throwing herself at Maggie’s co-worker (Jamie Kaler playing it straight compared to his My Boys character) with every ounce of her sexuality. There was a point last season where Robin became a comic tour de force (especially when Lily was missing, leaving the female comedy entirely up to her), and this was the first episode where some part of me (a very small one, I swear) was actually glad that she was single to be able to play her own absurd role in the charade.

And while I usually dislike random Lily and Marshall plots, I thought that Jason Segel sold the hell out of the letter from his 15-year old self (and the Mad Libs/Overalls that came before it) and its effect on him. As with Ted, he’s had the same sort of mid-life crisis before, but I thought the flashback sequence (with the rat tail, and the overalls, and the “Informer”) was just inspired enough to carry the episode over, and the return of older Marshall (this time time-travelling back to December 8th in order to send Marshall some hot wings as a sign of the existence of time travel) was paradox opening but immensely fun in the process. No, there’s nothing particularly fantastic about Marshall trying and failing to dunk a basketball in trying to live up to his life’s expectations, but it sort of captured the same sort of life’s consideration Ted was going through, and Vanilla Thunder really is an awesome nickname.

As things got to the end of the episode, with Barney in control and the co-worked back in the game, things got to the point where these mythology stories always do in figuring out how it’s all going to go wrong. We know that Maggie isn’t the mother because it would be too convenient, and because there’s no indication of JoAnna Garcia sticking around for more than one episode (such is the world we live in that we know this for certain). And yet, despite Barney’s presence offering the opportunity for the show to use his womanizing ways to in some way tarnish or ruin Maggie for everyone, the show goes in a completely different route. Instead of sabotaging her, the show further cements the role of destiny in the universe by having her own boy next door from her childhood in her apartment, rekindling a long lost love that is what Ted calls “the second greatest love story I’ve ever heard.” And you realize that “The Window” closed not because destiny doesn’t exist, but rather because there are other people like Ted out there who are sitting around waiting for their Mother to come along.

And set to Grizzly Bear’s “Two Weeks” (in case you were wondering “What was the song at end of The Window?”), that montage allows this particular reference to fate to prove outside of Ted’s grasp without undermining his purpose. Ted didn’t fail so much as he learned a lesson, and while this isn’t an entirely new development it was nicely condensed into a single episode (as opposed to turning into Stella, who even with my appreciation of Sarah Chalke in general went on far too long to make a largely similar point). It’s as if “Ten Sessions” had been the end of Stella’s journey, simply revitalizing Ted’s belief that there is a reason fate exists, and there’s a reason he’s still out there searching for “the one” (and a reason that we are still following the producers on this wild goose chase to find the mother).

I laughed, the cockles of my heart were warmed, and I got to revisit the wonder that is early 1990s unintelligible white rap – I’ll take it.

Cultural Observations

Loved the small moment where Ted is chasing through the streets cursing Barney, and a woman responds with “Me too!” from somewhere on the street.

I haven’t seen Se7en (I know, I know), but Smulders so sold that “What’s in the box?!” joke at the opening as both a) kind of terrible and b) kind of awesome that I didn’t need to “get it” to “get it.”

As far as the Robin/Barney complaints of past weeks go, I thought it was better here, although I don’t like Robin’s “I can’t believe I dated that guy” attitude. Barney wasn’t a complete and total womanizer here, and it appears (in an interview with the L.A. Times, which has minor plot spoilers) that they’re going to consider the ramifications more carefully eventually…although a reunion seems out of the question.

I now want to know who Robin’s “Mike Chaps” is – Barney’s random chick doesn’t warrant investigation, but Mike Chaps totally does. His last name is Chaps!

JoAnna Garcia was charming and pretty as ever as Maggie, but Jaime Weinman is right that it’s very tough to properly cast someone who is supposed to be completely irresistible: beauty is subjective, after all. However, I thought show was smart to avoid showing too much of Maggie’s early years in college so as to not have to be put on trial for whether she was charming enough to warrant the obsession, thus leaving it to our imaginations and our ability to accept Ted’s romanticism.

Now, excuse me while I Make Adjustments [and] Go Get It Energized!

1.3.3 Recruiting Church Members as Informers Communists do not trust people; even their own. This is

1.3.3 Recruiting Church Members as Informers

Communists do not trust people; even their own. This is why in any given community there was always more than one informer. So, even if the pastor of a church was working for the secret police, either as an undercover officer or as a collaborator, the police also recruited lay church members in order to check up on the information received from the leader. In order to recruit them the secret police used the same means as for the recruitment of church leaders. The officers frequently exploited the naïveté of the people they approached.

When they make contact with potential informers, secret police officers instruct them very firmly not to tell anyone, even their family members, about having been contacted. The effectiveness of their attempt unquestionably depends on the acceptance of this secrecy.

Suggestion – The best protection for someone who is targeted by the secret police to become an informer or who is simply called in for interrogation is to ignore the warning received and to tell everyone, including family and church members, in such a way that this will reach the ears of the secret police. You will quite definitely not be contacted again. Of course, there is a risk in doing this, but not doing so carries with it a much greater risk that one should avoid at all costs. And be sure to pray earnestly about the situation and have others pray for you.

The recruitment of an informer is always confirmed by a written agreement that is really like a pact with the devil. At this point the informer also receives a secret code name that will be used in all information reports. These reports will be kept in the personal files of the informer and of the people they have informed on.

Those who agree to this compromise sometimes think that their failure will always remain a secret. However, after the fall of communism the secret police files in many countries were opened and the written agreements and reports of the secret police informers in churches became known to the public, to the shame of those guilty of this great sin.

This request from the officer becomes a definite order accompanied by real threats if the person signs the agreement, but even in this case there is a way out. The solution is to refuse to write any reports. If someone who has signed a collaboration agreement starts writing reports, it will be even more dangerous to refuse cooperation later on. Some collaborators who tried to withdraw after years of cooperation when the Lord convicted them of their sin were killed by the secret police. Certainly, people like these died as martyrs, but their families still have to live with the shame of their life of compromise before they were killed.

Suggestion – If you know anyone who has become a collaborator with the secret police, try to convince them gently to come out into the open as soon as possible and to save their soul. With confession, there will be forgiveness before God and the Christian community.

I subbed and laid out the front page, which was to hold our lead story of the library’s closure. Bec

I subbed and laid out the front page, which was to hold our lead story of the library’s closure. Because the library story was to fill the entire page I decided to extend the promo panels at the bottom slightly, so that more of the edition’s contents could be advertised to new students who would be unfamiliar with the type of writing the Informer typically contains.

I did this by increasing the box’s height and moving the text of each sell beneath its image, allowing more of them to be squeezed in horizontally (I also changed it from multiple Quark boxes into a single Quark table). This created the problem of differentiating between the sells as they lay next to each other, which I tried to solve by alternating bold/normal font weight. This was not very effective and the final page instead alternated between red/purple font colour, which did a much better job. I am not completely satisfied with this either though, since it introduces a one-off colour to the design. In future editions, we could try alternating between red and black and making page numbers grey.

Choosing the sell text was mostly a matter of adapting the headlines used for the articles I was advertising. Sometimes I had to add or remove words, but with only a couple of exceptions the others’ work fitted nicely and created a strong link between the sell and the actual story.

As well as extending the promo panel, I condensed the title piece. The strip beneath it containing the web address for Informer Online and the university’s logo was wasteful, and the actual title piece itself has too much blank space above and below the text. I moved the URL to the imprint area, added our email address, and positioned a translucent white UoC logo in the bottom right corner. I was happy with this except for the UoC logo, which became lost when the page was put onto newsprint. Future editions should make it larger and possibly a little less translucent.

When it came to adding copy to the page, it became apparent that a turnover would need to be arranged with Conny, who was subbing the second page. This was hazardous since Quark’s text overflow feature only works between boxes in the same project, but we were working in two separate files. Thankfully however, I managed to keep the breakpoint at the same position and no text was duplicated or lost between our pages. I had to ad-lib a style for the turnover text, and I think made a good choice with larger, italic letters followed by an ellipsis.

I also broke from the stylesheet with the first two paragraphs. Normally they are the “para 1” then “para 2” style, followed by the standard body copy style, but I felt that this used up too much space due to the sheer length of the first paragraph, which I could not effectively shorten. I opted to skip the para 1 style and start instead with para 2, making it bold to ensure it stood out in a similar manner to the para 1 style. I was also happy with this decision.

The furniture surrounding the story was my main area of creativity on the page. Given the distinct lack of drama from photos of the library either before or after the move, I opted instead for photos of the three figures prominently involved. I was pleased with my captions for these, which told a sequential story that described both their involvement and, in general terms, the chain of events that led to the story being written: he decided, he agreed, and now she opposes. In terms of the images themselves, I was surprised by just how much more approachable the page was when people’s faces were added. I went through the sell pictures after changing the story’s and found faces for each one where possible.

My original headline was “Library Protests”, but Terry pointed out that this was a label. He also rightly advised that readers would most likely already know that the library had closed, so the headline should reflect developments that have followed from that. I’m not terrifically pleased with “Library Outrage”, since it isn’t entirely reflected by the copy, but it’s the best anyone could come up with.

I was very pleased with my bullet point subheads however, which neatly sum up the latest developments for anyone who is aware of the story but has not been keeping a close eye on it.

ERG will allow people to be critical about the analysis presented by The Economist and provide a jumping-off point to have a fun discussion about the important issues impacting the world. Since ERG will only meet once a month and the magazine covers a wide-variety of topics, the group will focus on the main issues presented (i.e. the head-liners/ briefings), but also allow flexibility to discuss the individual interests that members bring to the table. We also anticipate inviting a professor to one meeting per semester, giving us an additional opportunity to discuss these important issues with our experienced faculty, yet in a more casual setting than the classroom or brown-bags.

It’s Saturday, hooray! It’s also the day that I’m supposed to get back in to the swing of blogging, so I don’t have to resort to No Time To Blog next week. I’m not feeling particularly motivated, but I’m hoping to get in to the swing of it, once I start.

Last night’s entry, At The Wedding, was so short that it might as well have been a tweet, but then I was at a wedding reception, and blogging for any more than a minute is somewhat frowned upon. You’ll all be extremely pleased to learn that I had a good old-fashioned boogie, but it took a while for me to ‘feel the music’, I didn’t even get up when the DJ had a Motown section, which I think is shocking. The DJ had some interesting song choices, including the theme tune to Cagney & Lacey and Informer by Snow. I said jokingly that the next song would be Oh Carolina by Shaggy. And it was. I was coerced in to doing a bit of jiving at one point and somehow got through it even though I had no clue what I was doing. I must be a natural.

Liverpool play West Ham later, and it’s on ESPN. I will have to start making plans on how I’m going to watch it. After I’ve done some more blogging, of course.

Bologna.
