Just two months into the EU’s incandescent bulb ban, and you are already out of frosted bulbs? Don’t fret; the EURO-CONDOM, Ingo Maurer’s statement against the EU’s bulb banning madness, may also be the answer for those who haven’t stocked up on non-glaring incandescent lamps.

This friendly chapeau above is EURO CONDOM by Ingo Maurer, a silicone light bulb cover currently produced by Colourcover in England. It will try its best to protect you and your incandescent light bulb from the EU’s recent bulb ban madness.

Any one of the differently colored packaging variants contains an identical, translucent white bulb cover. Note the user instructions on the packaging. Sorry, no scents, all very neutral.

The shocking image above shows how the agents of the perverted Empire of EUville wish you’d use this product: All wrong!

Much better, this is one thinkable way how you could use the product to protect you and your family from ugly light. But then, do what? Better keep the EURO CONDOM, and send the CFL to your favorite pro-CFL parlamentarian or EU office as a gift!

Finally, this shows the correct application of a EURO CONDOM.

Details:
While carefully rolling down from the top to the bottom of the bulb, build up and keep some tension in the semi-elastic condom. Try to keep the center tip right on top, and try to keep layers of silicone rubber from folding up. Fits snugly on 60 mm bulbs, a bit loose at the base of recent 55 mm diameter bulbs. Currently, no (refractive-index matching?) gel is supplied with the EURO CONDOM, thus it’s a rather dry procedure as the silicone tends to stick to itself and the bulb’s glass. Luckily, most folds can be carefully picked and pulled to shape later because the silicone cover seems to be much more resistant to damage than customary condoms.

Tyske ljusgeniet Ingo Maurer kläckte då idén med en värmebeständig kondom att trä över vanliga glödlampor för att få det rätta frostiga känslan. Smart – fast lite ekivokt ser det allt ut.

A few days ago, the New York Times ran a great article about OLEDs – what are they you ask?  Organic Light Emitting Diodes, a cousin of the LED lights that we are starting to see everywhere from flashlights to cars’ headlights.  The key difference between LEDs and OLEDs is that OLEDs are made into super-thin, flexible sheets that offer uniform, diffuse light while still retaining the energy efficiency and longevity of LEDs. (think 20 year lifespan).  LEDs offer “points” of light like any normal bulb.

How cool and untapped is this technology?  Well, let’s just say that there is so much opportunity here that GE is spending more than HALF its research and development budget this year on this one initiative. That is a lot of money folks.  What GE is really trying to do is to find new applications for OLEDs and, more importantly, lower costs so that it is not such a huge premium over traditional lighting options.  For example, Sony has an OLED-based 11″ television retailing for $2,500!  Sure the picture quality and viewing angles are better than a standard flat panel, but it’s more than 10 times the cost of current technology.

Still the vision of the future with OLEDs is pretty amazing.  Because the ultra-thin profile, people are experimenting with and talking about using OLEDs in ceiling tiles, wall dividers, windows and even Venetian blinds (to mimic natural lighting at night – how cool is that?).  Famed lighting designer Ingo Maurer (designer of famous lights such as the Zettle’z) is already playing with this material, launching a palm tree-inspired light with OLED “fronds” for a cool $10,000.  I don’t think this is his best design work, but it’s easy to see the possibilities with this technology.

As a designer, particularly one who is infatuated with lighting as well as green design, this medium is super exciting.  So many times I’ve wanted expansive, diffuse light options for projects, whether to light up a piece of art/print/photograph from behind, or to use as an ambient back splash behind a soaking tub or a cooktop, etc.  On a more ractical level, how about just having televisions so thin and so flexible (so that they can be rolled up) that you don’t ever have to design around them anymore.   We all know how “easy” it is to place the ubiquitous flat panel over the fireplace!  Similarly, when OLED sheets become widely available, lighting closets, beneath cabinets, etc. will be a snap and make everyone’s lives better and easier including designers’.

Until then, we can only hope and wait.  In the meanwhile, start with outfitting/retrofitting your homes/projects with LED recessed lights – that’s a great place to start.  More on that to come in another entry…

Kitchens are my favorite room to design. Maybe because I love to cook (and eat).  I have an obsession with making kitchens functional. Nothing drives me more crazy than not having the pots and pans near the stove or the dishwasher out of reach of the dishes. Kitchens should make cooking easier and more fun.

Recently, I was in Kitchen nirvana. I attended a professional cooking demonstration at Miele. And yes, we did eat food cooked right there in their kitchen-in a word-yum!

First of all how much fun is the architecture of the cooking demonstration room-the floating ceiling with Ingo Maurer Birdie hanging lights, ovens backlit with color changing LED light, large tables and Verner Panton chairs.   See how all of the ovens are the same size in each column so that you can custom design your oven and warming drawer layout.  I could not live without my warming drawer!

Miele NYC Showroom Kitchen

While we noshed on Steamed Shrimp, Lynn Anne and Barbara demonstrated the many features of the Master Chef Oven. You can cook pretty much anything in this oven and use Convection to speed the cooking time for your Thanksgiving turkey.  But the more important feature is that because of the dual fans there is no flavor transference.  You can cook salmon and cookies at the same time and the cookies will not taste like the salmon.  I know because I ate the sugar cookies–and they tasted like sugar, delicious!  The Master Chef Oven is like having a chef in your Kitchen: just enter the type of food and the oven will give you suggestions on cooking time.  The other great feature is that the oven has a Sabbath feature which will keep the oven on for 72 hours–unbelievable.

Miele Speed and Master Chef Ovens

Then we ate Roasted Salmon on Mixed Baby Greens prepared  in the Master Chef Oven on Convection Mode while we learned about the virtues of the Speed Oven.  The Speed Oven can be used as a microwave, convection oven, traditional second oven.  The most amazing thing about the speed oven is cooking baked potatoes.  They bake on convection with occasional bursts of microwave to speed cooking, so the microwave doesn’t change the texture of the potato. If you have ever microwaved a potato to speed things up, you know how it just does not taste or feel the same…  I definitely have a Speed Oven in my future.

There are no words to describe the Beef Tenderloin cooked in the Master Chef Oven on AutoRoast with sides of Corn in Cilantro Lime Butter, Spinach cooked with gorgonzola and pine nuts and Focaccia Bread cooked in the Master Chef Oven with a Miele Pizza Stone.  A veritable feast for the eyes, nose and tastebuds, while Lynn Anne demonstrated all of the features of the Steam Oven. You can cook four different dishes in this oven simultaneously with no flavor transfer. You could not find more perfectly cooked vegetables-divine.

Miele Built in Coffee System

Dessert was a Key Lime pie — the crust was cooked in the oven and the key lime filling in the steam oven–it could not have been any better.   Cappuccino served from the Miele Built In Single Cup Coffee System was one of the best cups I have ever had–strong with a great foamy head…delicious…  If my husband finds out about this, we will have to lose precious kitchen storage space to the Coffee System. He is a cappuccino fanatic.  Move over Starbucks…

I could continue on for hours about the fantastic features of the Miele refrigerator, freezer and wine storage, but then you would have no reason to join me at Miele for a product demonstration. And you wouldn’t want to miss out on that great meal, would you?

Demain, en France, plus de lampes (ou d’ampoules selon l’expression consacrée) à incandescence d’une puissance supérieure à 100W … Il parait que c’est pas écologique. La disparition programmée des lampes à incandescence est pour septembre, mais pour faire un peu de zèle et montrer son engagement au service de la planète, l’ancien Meedadt, Medad, et désormais MEEDM enfin je veux dire le le Ministère de l’Ecologie, de l’Energie, du Développement durable et de la Mer en charge des Technologie vertes et des négociations sur le climat, celui qui a réussi a acheter développement durable comme nom de domaine, a avancé de quelques semaines l’échéance fixée par la réglementation européenne.

On reviendra sur cette lampe et les questions qui tournent autour de sa disparition programmée.

En attendant, voici EuroCondom, du grand designer allemand Ingo Maurer. Montée sur une lampe en verre clair, cette capote de silicone résistante à la chaleur doit permettre de retrouver la luminosité diffuse des lampes à incandescences en verre dépoli, également condamnée par Bruxelles.

Bald 20 Jahre ist die Leuchte alt, nun muss sie geschützt werden. Der Münchner Leuchtendesigner Ingo Maurer hatte die gefiederte Glühbirne in eine grosse Box gestellt. Denn geht es nach der neuen EU-Richtlinie, kommt für Maurers Lichtikone das Aus. Die Glühbirne soll ab September 2009 vom Markt verschwinden. In einem ersten Schritt sollen als Beitrag zum Klimaschutz zunächst 100-Watt-Birnen sowie alle matten Glühlampen aus den Regalen verbannt werden, ein Jahr später alle Glühbirnen mit einer Leistung zwischen 75 und 100 Watt. Für Ingo Maurer bedeutet dies eine drastische Verminderung der Lebensqualität: «Die Glühlampe ist eine emotionale Ikone.» In der Tat begleitet uns die Erfindung Edisons schon ein Leben lang. Seit rund eineinhalb Jahrhunderten macht uns die Glühbirne mit ihrem Wolframfaden die Nacht zum Tage. Nun soll sie durch stromsparende Leuchtstoff-, Halogen- oder LED-Lampen ersetzt werden. Deshalb haben sich die meisten Designer und Hersteller schon den neuen Lampen zugewandt, wie auf der Euroluce zu sehen war. Die zweijährlich stattfindende, mit 525 Ausstellern bedeutendste Lichtmesse der Welt in Mailand präsentierte vor kurzem neue Formen, Materialien und Effekte. Experimente mit LED standen zuoberst in der Gunst der Gestalter.

Auch Ingo Maurer experimentiert – seinem Protest gegen die Sparglühbirne zum Trotz – seit langem schon mit neuen Techniken. Schliesslich ist der deutsche Doyen des Lichts der Überzeugung, dass «die Zukunft verschiedenen Entwicklungen gehören wird». Seine Leuchte «Lacrime del Pescatore» ist inspiriert von Fischern, die Maurer einst als Knabe in der Lagune von Venedig beim Einholen ihrer Netze beobachtet hatte. Die Wandlampe besteht aus einer 100-Watt-Halogenbirne und drei Nylonnetzen, in denen unzählige Kristalle – die Tränen der Fischer – glitzern. Die poetische Leuchte nutzt das Halogenlicht, das demjenigen der klassischen Glühbirne mit ihrem ausgewogenen Farbspektrum besonders nahe kommt. Halogenleuchten funktionieren nach dem gleichen Prinzip wie Glühbirnen, ihre Lichtausbeute ist jedoch höher.

Als Zukunft des Lichts gilt die lichtemittierende Diode (LED). Sie gilt noch als Energiesparwunder. Für die LED sprechen eine extrem hohe Lebensdauer, eine hohe Lichtausbeute und ein sehr niedriger Stromverbrauch: Er liegt bei vergleichbarer Lichtleistung bei 10 bis 20 Prozent der Leistungsaufnahme der Glühbirne. Dafür sind LED-Birnen heute noch bis zu vierzigmal teurer als herkömmliche Lampen bei vergleichbarer Lichtleistung. Daran dürfte nicht zuletzt das Glühbirnenverbot einiges ändern. Die LED-Technik beflügelt derzeit die Designer. Einen spielerisch leichten Umgang mit der Leuchtdiode, die vor über 40 Jahren das Licht der Welt als kleiner roter Punkt an Fernsehgeräten erblickte, zeigte Tobias Grau: Seine Leuchte «Falling In Love» liegt als Lichtkugel wie in einem Nest und wird von besonders leistungsstarken LED zum Leuchten gebracht.

Gleich Hunderte von LED-Lichtern lassen die Metall-Leuchte «Raimond» leuchten. Der für das niederländische Kultlabel Moooi geschaffene Entwurf erscheint wie ein Himmelskörper. Hinter der brillanten Leuchte steckt jedoch kein Designer, sondern der holländische Mathematiker Raimond Puts. Er nutzt in seinem Entwurf die Strukturen von Buckminster Fullers geodätischen Domen. Puts’ kreisrunde oder ovale Leuchten bestehen aus einer inneren und einer äusseren Struktur, die an den Knotenpunkten durch die LEDs verbunden sind. Die grösste Version trägt bei einem Durchmesser von fast zwei Metern 1212 Leuchtdioden.

Auch der Künstler Olafur Eliasson präsentierte erstmals ein Objekt, das als erschwingliches Produkt im Handel erworben werden kann. Der in Berlin lebende dänische Künstler ist spätestens seit seiner Arbeit «The Weather Project» (2003) in der Londoner Tate Modern ein international umschwärmter Star: Wer damals die Turbinenhalle des Museums betrat, tauchte in ein orangeglühendes Farbbad ein, das den riesigen Raum aufzulösen schien. Nun übersetzte er seine Vorliebe für Prismen und Kaleidoskope in die Leuchte «Starbrick», die von Zumtobel Staff produziert wird. «Der <Starbrick> ist ein Experiment aus Lichtmodulation und Raum», erklärt der Künstler. Die Grundform der Leuchte besteht aus einem Kubus, auf dessen Grundflächen weitere sechs Kuben aufgesetzt sind. Während die sternförmigen Module aus gespritztem, mattschwarzem Polykarbonat hergestellt sind, werden die semitransparenten, gelben, kaleidoskopischen Spiegelflächen im Kern von LED hinterleuchtet. Die Module lassen sich zu Gruppen beliebiger Grösse kombinieren. «Theoretisch könnte man sogar ein ganzes Lichthaus aus <Starbricks> bauen», ist Eliasson überzeugt. (Quelle: NZZ online)
