As a follow up to my post on October 6th, DigiTimes reported THE VERY NEXT DAY that Foxconn had won

As a follow up to my post on October 6th, DigiTimes reported THE VERY NEXT DAY that Foxconn had won the Apple contract to manufacture the new tablet for possible shipment in Q1 2010. Foxconn, also known as Hon Hai Precision, apparently beat out Quanta and others. Having tracked the Taiwanese ODM market for many years and actually visiting Foxconn/Hon Hai, Quanta, Compal, HTC and others over the years, this is a nice win for Foxconn if the product turns out to be reality. Initial shipment estimates are expected to be in the range of 300,000 to 400,000 units in 2010. DigiTimes also claimed the Apple Tablet will sport a 10.6-inch panel, possibly sourced from Innolux Display.

I’ve always found the Taiwanese ODM market to be rife with information on unannounced products and production contracts, with a decent percentage of accuracy overall.

The Foxconn news was also reported in Engadget on October 7th.

Lite-On LCD Monitor Fire in China

Reported by DigiTimes, Lite-On Technology’s LCD monitor OEM production base located in Donggu

Reported by DigiTimes, Lite-On Technology’s LCD monitor OEM production base located in Dongguan, Southern China suffered a fire on February 3. The legal name of the production facility is Titanic Capital Services, a Lite-On Group affiliate. According to the report, there are 19 LCD monitor production lines and 15 were affected by the fire. Lite-On manufactures LCD monitors for Acer, Dell, HP, and Lenovo and these companies will certainly be impacted.

We are in a slow season when it comes to LCD monitor demand so the impact should be much less than if we were entering the second half of the year. However, the report indicates that HP would be hardest hit with the fire.

It is estimated that Lite-On will ship about 20 million OEM LCD monitors in 2008. Unless the damage to 79% of its production capacity is minimized and restored quickly, it will be difficult to see a scenario where Lite-On can accomplish its goal. Other OEM manufacturers like Innolux Display, TPV Technology and others will likely see increased orders in the short term.

Economies of scale is extremely important when manufacturing commodity items such as LCD monitors but it seems a prudent move to diversity production just a bit in case emergencies strike as was the case with Lite-On.

According to DigiTimes, Innolux Display is currently in talks with Amtran Technology to increase LCD

According to DigiTimes, Innolux Display is currently in talks with Amtran Technology to increase LCD TV production for Vizio. Amtran’s spokesperson Scottie Chiu should know as the company is the second largest shareholder of Vizio. Innolux has manufactured 26″ LCD TVs for Vizio and will most likely include other sizes in the future. There was some interesting bits in DigiTime’s piece as the report, according to Amtran’s Chiu, reported that Amtran and Innolux will be securing more orders from LCD manufacturers due to a shortage of LCD TV panels. In other words, Amtran and Innolux might be ready to book more LCD TV panels than they need. Why would they do this? To secure a steady stream of LCD TV panels for their OEM business to Vizio and others. Another reason is to put a cap on prices if forecasted to be increasing. This type of business activity is called double-booking and can impact the LCD panel market is a variety of ways. First off, double-booking can exacerbate a shortage situation by inflating the demand for panels. Second, by inflating demand with supply held fairly constant, the prices increase significantly. This in turn can impacts manufacturing and the final set prices at retail, potentially leading to a downturn in end consumer demand. A downturn in end consumer demand can cause some havoc for all companies in the LCD supply chain.
