Hands on Barbers
Funds will be used to install a new 6-foot stockade fence to conceal the empty lot next to the property. The long-term plan for this lot is to level and build a music studio to provide youth a place to grow and learn the art and business of music.

Urban Eats Arts and Music Café
Funds will be used to create an outdoor dining and leisure space, comfortable and enjoyable for the community. The project will include purchasing artificial ground cover, durable outdoor plants and shrubbery, and weatherized lattice and fencing.

The votes were very close, but in the end, the Innovation Fund award went to Hands On Barbers.  Congratulations to all the participating businesses!

To grace the occasion were some guests from different organizations such as the Senior Citizen’s Party List, Socio-Pastoral Institute, Office for Senior Citizens Affair and other support groups. Atty. Francisco Carcellar and Mr. Virgilio de Guzman, president and vice president of CASRCOR welcomed the guests.

All these were carefully planned and prepared to keep the spirit and participation of more than a thousand members alive.

Coming home from the training, I realized that i also have a lot of shortcomings to my family; i tend to focus on the faults and weaknesses of my children and husband. Now I realize,  also have to change for the better.

Before, we used to harass Mama whenever she goes out for an activity. Now, we understand why it is important for her to participate in the community.

It is important to own your feelings and accept yourself with both your positive and negative qualities, and be able to go beyond.

It only occurred to me that sharing my woundedness and triumphs can become the source of inspiration and learning for others.

Our trainigns is like a renewal for ma as a parent–it makes me reflect my good and not so good practices.

I feel both happy and sad because I get to heartaches and concerns of the elderly.

These are but a few of the insights that participants of the Pamilyang Lingkod Katiwala ng Roxas shared after the two-day module on Basic Orientation Seminar on the Care and Nurture of Missional Families and Spirituality of Parenting.

The first activity, Parenting the Inner Child was facilitated by Mr. Jungie Galapon by guiding the participants to a few minutes of silent visualization of their early childhood memories especially of their relationships with siblings and parents.They were then made to articulate qualities of their mothers and fathers that they liked most. The end of the activity was the presentation of the participants’ drawings that symbolize their families.

This activity allowed the participants to recall the parenting styles of their guardians and how these have eventually influenced their own families. This also emphasized parenting as a vocation and how parents are like pilots who could maneuver their planes regardless of their experiences and learned habits.

The day continued with an exercise on the types of parents (authoritarian, neglectful, permissive and democratic) and on Mensaheng Ikaw at Mensaheng Ako. On the second topic, a couple of participants were made to role play their communication patterns at home which either focus on the behavior and feelings of the communicator or on the judgment and accusation on the other. A mother and daughter tandem enjoyably exemplified a natural scenario in their household.

The last part of the day was a presentation by Sr. Frances Mangabat, SDS of the Pastoral Letter on Family by the CBCP in July 1999 and a discussion on the family values and traditions that are still present or are no longer being practiced. Some of the much valued are the show of respect (pagmamano at “po, opo”, use of kuya, ate), being together during meal time, prayer time and on special occasions. However, they also feel that religious practices and even eating together are practices that are slowly fading.

This and additional discussions on the issues in Barangay Roxas, especially on the youth mindlessly staying in the streets until the wee hours were concerns of the participants. There were different opinions on why they behave as such: parenting styles, inconducive home spaces, external factors, but all these point to their concern for the young in their community, indicating what the PLKR project aims to achieve — to have families who are lingkod katiwala of the community of Roxas.

This activity is participated by two representatives from each family belonging to the Women of Integrity and Service for Empowered Roxas (WISER), Association of Solo Parents in Roxas Empowered (ASPIRE) and Coalition of Associations of Senior Citizens of Roxas (CASCOR).

Potential outputs from this process could include a “game-changing” (defined as: ‘an event, idea, or procedure that effects a significant shift in the current way of doing or thinking about something’) project proposal, learning materials, best practice tool kits, policy briefs and an implementation road map.

Lagos State Government is planning to float a two-fold Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Innovation Fund for the economic development of the state.

 This Fund, which would cater for the populace and post-secondary institutions in the state, would be supported and administered by the Lagos State Government to nurture an environment that would aid research and development, enterprise promotion and innovation in the state.

 At a briefing in Lagos, the Commissioner for Science and Technology, Mr Adebiyi Mabadeje, said the the Fund will stimulate and encourage creativity and innovation in the populace in addressing critical areas of development in the state, in addition to poverty reduction and job creation.

 He said the Fund, which would be ready for access towards the end of the year, will be given to individuals to support emerging technologies and creative initiatives that leverage talents and capabilities towards growth and development of the state and the country in general.

 He said: “An Innovation Council was inaugurated last year by the State Government, in collaboration with a team from the Harvard Business School to develop an Innovation Fund. We are providing two funds here. One is for the general populace; while the other is to challenge and support post-secondary institutions in Lagos State.”

Great ideas, all too often, thrive on money… and lots of it.

The Alliance for Global Good, a non-profit that promotes collaboration and sustainability in philanthropy, recently announced a fund to promote innovation in philanthropy. The Innovation Fund will initially have about $10 million.

Though logistics are still getting ironed out, David M. Brand, the alliance’s chief executive, is interested in helping great ideas gain prominence and attention. Many organizations, especially small ones, are doing extraordinary things but receive little attention.

Brand cites Sweet Beginnings, a honey business that trains young people that have been incarcerated, as an innovative inspiration for the fund.

The for-profit honey business was created by the North Lawndale Employment Network to help residents of some of Chicago’s lowest income neighborhoods gain employment.  By creating a market-driven revenue stream by selling honey, Sweet Beginnings has been able to see growth even during these tough economic times.

Brand hopes the Innovation Fund will help both established and start-up non-profits. The fund will begin accepting proposals for requests early next year.

“We want to take an operation and help it grow and mature,” Brand said.

This site is a part-forum/part-blog that has links with the mainstream media as well as celebrities and politicians. Does not seem spectacularly different at first sight; but some very innovative features emerge on closer study! A site to bookmark, visit and use! The following is from the Yoosk? website:

But the Innovation Fund on Building Democracy is different from most funding programmes in that ideas are expected to be raised for public discussion first. The discussion on the website should provide an opportunity for others to develop the ideas into better proposals.

The first ideas floated on the website include proposals for web forums, a magazine, a travelling office and community radio.

Applications have to be submitted by 26th September.

 We want more people to participate in our democracy, and we want you to come up with ways to make this happen.

 The UK Government is working hard to connect with people – as you can see in the Governance of Britain programme and the Communities in Control White Paper.

 

Now we want to support projects that you will run to help people to address public issues and influence government.

 

If you can think of a way to get people talking, we’d like to hear it. We have £150,000 available to develop about ten proposals.

The way the fund is being administered this year encourages a more innovative and collaborative approach in itself as the call for ideas has taken place in an open format, and is now open online for submission and discussion. The process will work in three stages:

1) Upload your ideas to the website and discuss them online – there is an opportunity to colloaborate on ideas, strengthen initial bids and build partnerships at this stage.

2) Continuation of online discussion through September, with a possible event scheduled in during this month. Formal applications are invited to be submitted before 4pm on 26th September

3) The selection panel makes its decision in the second week of October
