WASHINGTON – Para ilmuwan yang sengaja meledakkan dua pesawat luar angkasa tak berawak di Bulan pada bulan lalu berhasil menemukan sumber air.

Oktober silam, pesawat luar angkasa milik NASA bernama Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS) membawa misi untuk ‘mengebom’ Bulan dengan menjatuhkan roket Centaur ke permukaan Bulan.

NASA berharap pengeboman ini cukup ampuh untuk menyingkirkan debu tebal di permukaan Bulan sehingga LCROSS bisa menemukan keberadaan air dalam tanah. Rupanya misi ini berhasil menemukan apa yang tengah dicarinya.

“Kami berhasil membuka misteri yang tersimpan di tempat terdekat dari Bumi,” kata salah satu ilmuwan NASA, Michael Wargo, seperti dikutip dari Reuters, Senin (16/11/2009).

“Tim NASA telah berhasil menemukan keberadaan air di Bulan. Namun kami berharap bisa menemukan simpanan air yang cukup siginifikan di wilayah kawah permanen di Bulan. Dalam hal ini, kawah bulan bernama Cabeus yang menjadi target kami,” lanjutnya.

Para ilmuwan NASA menyebutkan, jika terbukti air di kawah ini berusia miliaran tahun, maka penemuan air ini dapat memberikan banyak informasi mengenai formasi sistem tata surya.

“Konsentrasi dan distribusi air dan bahan lainnya masih memerlukan analisa lebih mendalam. Namun sejauh ini, memungkinkan untuk menyebut kawah Cabeus menyimpan sumber air,” tandas Wargo. (rah)

(SuaraMedia News) – Beberapa peneliti telah menemukan bahwa terdapat listrik yang cukup di dalam pohon untuk memasok daya bagi sirkuit elektronik. Penemuan ini bisa menjadi jalan agar komputer di rumah bisa dipasok energinya dari pohon yang ditanam di kebun belakang rumah.

“Sejauh pengetahuan kami, ini merupakan pertamakalinya peneliti menemukan bahwa seseorang bisa mengaktifkan sesuatu dengan memasang elektroda ke sebuah pohon,” kata Babak Parviz, peneliti dari University of Washington, seperti VIVAnews kutip dari Mother Nature Network, 14 September 2009.

Parviz, dan rekannya Brian Otiz telah mengembangkan alat yang akan memungkinkan sebuah sirkuit dicolokkan ke pohon. “Pengembangan ini nantinya bisa mengatasi masalah bagaimana melakukan charging terhadap gadget portabel seperti iPod dan ponsel,” kata Parviz.

Penelitian ini didasari oleh temuan sebelumnya, ketika tahun lalu sejumlah peneliti mendapati bahwa pohon bisa menghasilkan voltase hingga 200 milivolt ketika sebuah elektroda dipasang di pohon dan elektroda lainnya ditanam di tanah. Teknologi tersebut didesain untuk berfungsi sebagai sensor hutan yang dayanya dipasok dengan cara tersebut. Tetapi sampai saat ini belum ada yang mencoba mengaplikasikan temuan ini untuk mengembangkan pembangkit listrik tenaga pohon.

Tahun lalu, Carlton Himes, Mahasiswa University of Washington menghabiskan musim panasnya berkeliling di hutan sekitar kampus dan menancapkan paku di pohon maple lalu menghubungkannya pada voltmeter. Ia mendapati bahwa pohon-pohon tersebut memiliki voltase yang stabil sampai beberapa ratus milivolt.

Berhubung voltase pohon sangat rendah, ia kemudian membuat konverter khusus untuk mengambil voltase input sampai berukuran minimal 20 milivolt agar bisa disimapan untuk menghasilkan output yang lebih besar. Perangkat itu kemudian menghasilkan voltase output sampai 1,1 volt, yang cukup untuk menjalankan sensor berdaya rendah.

Meski begitu, teknologi untuk memanfaatkan pohon pinus sebagai pemasok daya untuk PC masih jauh. Dan sebagai informasi saja, tubuh manusia memiliki daya yang cukup besar untuk menyalakan komputer. Sayangnya belum ditemukan cara untuk menyambungkan manusia dengan PC lewat kabel tanpa menyakiti manusia tersebut. (vvn)

WASHINGTON (SuaraMedia) – Tim ilmuwan Amerika sangat yakin bahwa mereka menemukan lembah sungai luas yang baru terbentuk di planet Mars.

Times of India, Sabtu (9/5/2009) melansir, kebanyakan sistem aliran sungai di Mars ada selama masa awal sejarah planet tersebut, sebelum terjadinya kondisi transisi iklim serta cuaca di Mars menjadi lebih dingin dan kering.

JL Dickson, CI Fassett, dan JW Head, dari Department of Geological Sciences, Brown University, melaporkan bukti temuan mereka berupa sistem aliran lembah sungai yang terbentuk selama pertengahan jaman Amazon, sekira 1,8 miliar tahun lalu.

Berdasarkan data yang mereka kemukakan, sistem aliran sungai ini berlokasi di kawah gunung berapi, Lyot di sebelah utara pertengahan garis lintang. Mereka memperkirakan aliran ini memiliki panjang sekira sepuluh kilometer.

Hasil penelitian sebelumnya mengindikasikan bahwa keseluruhan kondisi Mars selama pertengahan jaman Amazon terlalu dingin sehingga tidak bisa mendukung adanya aliran air di sana.

Bagaimanapun, mereka mengemukakan bahwa lingkungan mikro di kawah Lyot memiliki tekanan permukaan tinggi yang disebabkan oleh peninggian dataran. Pada saat terjadi kombinasi dengan kondisi temperatur setempat, akan melelehkan permukaan es.

Mereka pun menambahkan, endapan sungai es yang terdapat pada kawah menandakan bahwa sungai es menghasilkan air dari lelehan es untuk membentuk sistem aliran sungai ini.(okz)

SANTA FE (SuaraMedia News) – Mulai tahun 2012, para turis yang berwisata ke luar angkasa bisa menginap di suatu hotel khusus yang mengitari Bumi. Pembangunan resort angkasa luar “Galactic Suite Space Resort” tersebut berhasil terwujud berkat ambisi seorang miliarder, yang sampai mengucurkan dana US$3 miliar.

Namun para calon tamu hotel harus membayar 3 juta euro (sekitar Rp 42,2 miliar) agar bisa menginap selama tiga malam. Sebelum terbang ke luar angkasa, calon tamu juga harus menjalani pelatihan di sebuah pulau tropis selama delapan pekan.

Harian Daily Mail mengungkapkan bahwa selama tinggal di hotel, para tamu dijanjikan bisa melihat matahari terbit 15 kali sehari dan keliling dunia setiap 80 menit. Mereka akan mengenakan pakaian velcro sehingga bisa merangkak di dinding hotel mereka dengan menempelkan badan ke dinding seperti manusia laba-laba Spiderman.

CEO Galactic Suite Ltd dan mantan teknisi angkasa luar, Xavier Claramunt, mengatakan proyek ini akan menjadikan perusahaannya berada di barisan paling depan dalam industri amatir dengan masa depan cerah. Dia juga memprediksi bahwa wisata ke angkasa luar akan menjadi salah satu bentuk lain perjalanan wisata populer.

“Sangat normal membayangkan anak-anak kalian, kemungkinan dalam waktu 15 tahun, bisa melewatkan akhir pekan di angkasa luar,” kata Claramun. Perusahaan Galactic Suite Ltd yang dibangun pada 2007 ini berharap untuk memulai pengoperasian hotel yang menyerupai kapsul (pod) pada orbit 280 mil di atas Bumi, bergerak dengan kecepatan lebih dari 18.000 mil per jam dengan kapasitas untuk empat tamu dan dua pilot astronot.

Perlu satu setengah hari untuk sampai ke pod tanpa staf hotel yang akan menyambut mereka. “Saat penumpang tiba di roket, mereka akan berada di sana selama tiga hari di roket dan kapsul. Kami menciptakan keyakinan pada turis bahwa mereka tidak ditinggalkan. Setelah tiga hari, turis akan kembali ke roket pengantar dan kembali ke Bumi,” terannya.

Galactic Suite bukan satu-satunya perusahaan yang tertarik pada industri pariwisata angkasa luar. Spaceport America yang berbasis di New Mexico adalah fasilitas pertama yang dibangun secara spesifik untuk pelanggan komersial angkasa luar dan penumpang yang tidak perlu membayar.

Perusahaan Virgin Galactic milik taipan Inggris, Richard Branson akan menggunakan fasilitas tersebut untuk membawa turis jalan-jalan ke angkasa luar dengan biaya 120.000 satu kali naik. Sekitar 300 orang sudah mendaftar untuk ikut dalam wisata jalan-jalan angkasa luar tersebut.(vvn)

His fictional scientist Katherine “created beautifully symmetrical ice crystals by sending loving thoughts to a glass of water as it froze. Incredibly the converse was also true: when she sent negative, polluting thoughts to the water, the ice crystals froze in chaotic, fractured forms.” What is Dan Brown trying to tell us?

As one can see, a handle is conveniently designed so that when the jar is finished, the glass gains value as a drinking mug. This is a perfect example of “up-cycling”. The product is distributed and sold with a primary purpose while a secondary purpose was designed prior to production. This is where “up-cycling” differentiates from the 3 R’s. Although it is important to maintain our push for recycling, reducing, and reusing; “up-cycling” should naturally be applied where possible and considered before production of any product.

Oct. 27– President Barack Obama today will announce $3.4 billion in government grants for equipment to improve the efficiency of the nation’s electrical transmission network.

Smart Grid Layout

The grants, ranging in size from $400,000 to $200 million, will be used to develop and install “smart-grid” technology to make electricity transmission more reliable and aid the transmission of energy generated from sources like wind and solar power.
“The current system is outdated and dilapidated,” Carol Browner, the White House’s top energy adviser, said in a conference call with reporters late yesterday. “Today’s grants “will give us a transformational impact on how electricity is generated, delivered and consumed,” she said.
The money comes from the $787 billion economic stimulus legislation approved by Congress in February. Jared Bernstein, chief economic adviser to Vice President Joe Biden, said during the conference call the grants will “save or create tens of thousands” of jobs.
Bernstein said Oct. 15 the stimulus legislation has created or saved about 1 million jobs since it was enacted. The nation’s unemployment rate rose to 9.8 percent last month, and the president has said he expects it to exceed 10 percent before it starts coming down.

LONDON (Reuters) – The amazing eyes of a giant shrimp living on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef could hold the key to developing a new type of super high-quality DVD player, British scientists said on Sunday.

Mantis Shrimp

Mantis shrimps, dubbed “thumb splitters” by divers because of their vicious claws, have the most complex eyes in the animal kingdom.
They can see in 12 primary colors, four times as many as humans, and can also detect different kinds of light polarization — the direction of oscillation in light waves.
Now a team at the University of Bristol have shown how the shrimps do it, using remarkable light-sensitive cells that rotate the plane of polarization in light as it travels through the eye.
Manmade devices do a similar thing in DVD and CD players but they only work well for one color, while the shrimp’s eye operates almost perfectly across the whole visible spectrum from near ultra-violet to infra-red.
Transferring the same multi-color ability into a DVD player would result in a machine capable of handling far more information than a conventional one.
“The mechanism we have found in this eye is unknown to human synthetic devices. It works much, much better than any attempts that we’ve made to construct a device,” researcher Nicholas Roberts told Reuters.
He believes the “beautifully simple” eye system, comprising cell membranes rolled into tubes, could be mimicked in the lab using liquid crystals.
Details of the mantis shrimp research were published in the journal Nature Photonics.
Just why the mantis shrimp needs such a rarefied level of vision is unclear, although researchers suspect it is to do with food and sex.

Die Überschrift – manche werden es vielleicht wissen – entstammt dem Niedersachsenlied, und um dieses Bundesland geht es auch in diesem Artikel (aber nicht nur). Mir als niedersächsischer Hannoveraner geht es um den Gegensatz von werblichem Image und eigenem Gefühl. Letzteres bezieht sich bei mir nur auf die Stadt, weniger auf das Bundesland. Ich bin Hannoveraner, und kenne offen gesagt Niedersachsen in etwa so gut, wie alle anderen Bundesländer auch. Sicher kann man hin und wieder von der geographischen Nähe zur Nordsee sprechen, was mich aber mitnichten zu einem regelmäßigen Besuch derer veranlasst.

Insofern habe ich mit dem Image meines Bundeslandes nicht sonderlich viel gemein, was nicht ausschließt, dass Jung von Matt dennoch das richtige Image aufzeigt. Hierzu empfehle ich als Einstieg die Pferdeäpfel-Affäre beim Werbeblogger. So wird dort auch von den thematischen Zugpferden (ein sehr gelungenes Wort an dieser Stelle) wie, Wirtschaftsdynamik, Innovationskraft und Sympathie gesprochen. Diese versucht man im folgenden Spot wohl auch aufzuzeigen:

Eines vorweg, ich finde den Spot eigentlich ganz lustig und in jedem Fall gut gemacht. Aber mit dem Image kann ich mich nun so gar nicht identifizieren. Sind das sympathische Personen, die man da sieht? Irgendwie schon, aber auch Freaks. Sind Pferdeäpfel in Schriftzügen das? Ich denke eher nicht. Also bleibt doch eher ein komisches, und weniger ein „So sind wir“ Gefühl.

Noch kurz ein Wort zu der Kampagne, die neben der Microsite auch einige Social Media Dienste zu bedienen versucht. Ich möchte die Zahlen auf Facebook, Twitter und YouTube noch gar nicht bewerten. Ich bin mir aber nicht so sicher, ob der Content die Follower, Freunde oder User genügend unterhält respektive Interessiert. Es wird zu beobachten sein. Im Übrigen finde ich die berittene Polizei in Hannover ganz toll, die Hinterlassenschaften weniger. Dass schaffen keine zehntausend Hunde!

Siden starten af 1990, har 3D CAD været en del af mit liv. Så på den måde kan man sige at jeg har været med fra starten. Jeg arbejder til dagligt med at optimere brugen af 3D i dansk industri. Der er rigtig mange penge at tjene for virksomhederne rundt om i landet, hvis deres brug af 3D blev mere struktureret. Tid er penge, som man siger.

 Metode, metode, metode. Ja det handler i sin enkelthed om at have en fast metode at bruge sine systemer på.

 Det er ikke bare out of the box, og så derudaf. Man er nødt til at have styr på processen. Fra en ordre kommer ind i huset, måske allerede ved tilbud, til varen er konstrueret, produceret, kontrolleret og leveret.

Her kommer rigtig brug af 3D ind i billedet. Det koster 1 krone at lave en fejl mens man sidder og konstruerer, hvis du først sender en fejl videre herfra, koster det 10 kroner i næste fase at rette den, ender den i produktion koster den samme krone 100 kr. og ender den hos kunden kan den nemt koste 1000 kr. Er det masse produktion kan det den samme krone koste 100.000 kr.

Mange fejl kan fanges ved at have styr på sin metode. En gennemarbejdet proces i den enkelte virksomhed, den tager måske 10 dage, kan redde rigtig mange fejl i den fremadrettede produktudvikling i virksomheden. Fald ikke for undskyldningen, det har vi ikke tid til. Det er præcist den gode metode der giver tiden og gør virksomheden i stand til at være foran deres konkurrenter.
