These three campuses, Philadelphia/Fontainebleau/Singapore, compose the Wharton-INSEAD Alliance and joins two international leaders in business management and finance education to create a resource incomparable in its global reach, access and knowledge with which it can share with students, faculty and business executives in the global arena.

I’ve spent the last two days, when I supposed to be writing my essays to meet the R2 deadline for INSEAD,reading other INSEADers blogs. They range from I love INSEAD but hate the cliques to I love INSEAD and the founder’s grandmother and her little poodle. Why have I been reading those blogs? Because I am broke, and cannot take a trip to france or singapore to visit the campus, meet these (i’m sure) delightful folks and hear what’s there on the website, straight from their mouths! Yes,the live audio version would be really good I bet.So I decided to stalk them through their blogs, and read what they really think –some still hoping they are as anonymous when they started -hoping their rants are not traceable..other’s not giving a flying fuck about what you know about them, and yet others who again, reproduce the INSEAD website on their blogs.Oh yes I am very, very judgemental.

Whatever those blogs said,I think INSEAD would be the place I want to go-yes the foul mouthed, illegal substances loving ,rude but thinking she is real witty me. I cannot for a moment think why they wouldn’t want me–oh right, they are full of people like me already..hmm.Diversity my cute little ass.

Today I met up with someone who is currently applying to quite a few 1-year executive MBA programs.

Today I met up with someone who is currently applying to quite a few 1-year executive MBA programs. He has applied to the PGPX programs at the IIMs, and was recently invited to an interview. He is also thinking of applying to Nanyang (Singapore), as well as other programs in south-east Asia. We briefly discussed about US programs, but agreed that it would not be possible for most of us (including him) to arrange for the kind of funding needed for them (therefore, INSEAD, IMD and Kellogg are out).

[Note: Here, the term executive MBA program is being used very loosely. PGPX is certainly an executive MBA program, but many others that we talked about, such as Kellogg and Columbia, are not. His primary goal is to be able to get into a 1-year MBA program, and since he has quite a few years of work experience, is not looking at conventional 2-year programs.]

Unlike BS, MS and PhD degrees, an MBA is not simply a course of study. More learning takes place from fellow participants than professors. A lot of the learning is experiential, and classes teach hard theory as well as soft skills. Brands matter for most degrees, but it matters even more so for an MBA degree. Of course there are guys who have never graduated school or college, and therefore have no education worth the name, who lead multi-billion dollar organizations (a single look at the Forbes list of billionaires will prove my claim). However, such people are considered outliers, and if you, the reader, are taking the time to read this post, it might be safe to assume that you are not (and probably never will be) be one of them (for some reason, I can never imagine Bill Gates, Michael Dell, Steve Jobs or Lawrence Ellison reading my posts!). For people like us, it makes a lot of sense to go for a brand-MBA degree. After all, on an average, a HBS MBA fares better in life than one from say Ohio State University. A disproportionate number of heads (CXO level officials) of Fortune 500 companies are graduates of super-elite business schools. McKinsey has a very large number of HBS and INSEAD graduates, and every other banker on Wall Street seems to be either from Wharton or Booth (University of Chicago). Many top IT companies are headed by graduates from Sanford GSB and MIT Sloan, while in “industry”, you can find usually find a homogeneous mixture of HBS, LBS and INSEAD graduates. The point that I am trying to make, which is obvious by now, is that it does go a long way to do an MBA from one of the top business schools.

Interestingly, though this guy is spending sleepless nights thinking about how best he would be able to arrange for funds, should he be accepted to Nanyang, he said that the most difficult part of the application process, apart from spending hours writing essays, is getting his recommenders to write so many recommendations. When I told him that he could as well apply to Kellogg, he said that his recommenders would probably not entertain him any further.

I hope everything finally works out fine for him, and that he is able to get a loan to at least cover his tuition and basic living expenses.

Only at INSEAD can you literally say this word (if this is a word at all) … P2 definitely star

Only at INSEAD can you literally say this word (if this is a word at all) …

P2 definitely started off with a bang and before you know it we have had 3 major INSEAD events in just 3 weeks – The INSEAD Olympics, The Monsoon Ball, The DASH !!! Does it get any better and crazier than this … I shall answer that for you – NOOOOO!!!

To top it all, we have 6 courses with insane course load this period and the cherry on the cake is that I have booked travel plans for every single weekend. Now you know what I mean by endlessness. The frenzy never ends and the weirdest part is that I don’t really want it to end. For every minute that I have nothing to do (which is a very very rare occurrence at INSEAD), I feel like I am not being productive and worry about not running around like my head’s cut off.

Some of the best moments so far have come from in-class discussions … ever heard your prof say “When you go to Jail, Prisoner’s Dilemma takes on a whole new meaning” or “If you are in Belgium then you can’t really accelerate fast enough before you are in another country” or “There is only one goal in life – to make money”…

Oh and how can one ever forget the National Week Bidding Night. My fellow INSEADers reading this know exactly what I am talking about This year saw the wildest and fun-nest National Week Bidding in history with Iberia winning the top spot. Here’s hoping for more of the endlessness and surviving it all …

Working out a financial package to support oneself through an MBA is a daunting task. It is particularly difficult for students from developing and third world countries. I personally know people who have graduated from top 5 US business schools who had to come back to their own country (which happens to be a third world country), and therefore earn in in local currency and pay back their loans in US dollars. In many cases, the EMI of their loans is more than their salary. Added to the problem, when they took the loan, they had put up their homes as collateral. For them, the situation could not have been worse – they have old retired parents at home to support, a home that is not theirs until their loans are paid off, and a job that is paying them in local currency, which when converted to US dollars, turns out to be a paltry figure. Contrary to the picture Financial Times MBA rankings might project, I know a few Indian School of Business (ISB) graduates who had no other option but to accept jobs that are paying them almost the same salary that they used to get before their MBA, and repaying back their loans is proving to be a daunting task.

I was going through Businessweek.com forums where I came across financial aid-related posts, many from admits to INSEAD, who might not be able to attend if not awarded a fellowship. I think that for a school of the stature of INSEAD, there should be a suitable program for international students to be able to receive a loan without a cosigner. For an international school that attracts students from all over the world, which includes a great number of third world countries, it is imperative that such a program exist. HBS, Wharton and MIT Sloan have such loan programs, and therefore their students don’t face the kind of problems that INSEAD admits do. The possibility of a Wharton graduate not being able to find himself a job on Wall Street, and therefore having to come back to India, is of course there. But it feels bad to see so many students not being able to join INSEAD just because they don’t have adequate funds, and therefore forever wondering what it would have been like to have an INSEAD MBA. Maybe a few of such applicants would have ended up like a Wharton graduate with a job in India with hefty EMIs to be paid at month-ends, but still that is better than being accepted to INSEAD but not being able to attend just because of insufficient funds.

Over the next year or two, as the economic situation improves, many schools should be able to work out suitable loan programs for international students who don’t have a cosigner. However, it does not look as if that will happen anytime soon for the current admits (class starting Jan 2010) to take advantage of. Hopefully the situation will be much better when I apply.

Many observers believe that the IIMA placements serve as an indicator of the state of the economy in general. A good placement season indicates a robust economy.

Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA) will begin its summer placement for 2011 from tomorrow.

“The brightest minds of this country would once again be vying for internships at firms from all over the world: Europe, USA, Australia, Asia-Pacific, Africa and Middle-East and of course, in India,” stated the IIMA release.

Many observers believe that the IIMA placements serve as an indicator of the state of the economy in general. A good placement season indicates a robust economy.

This year, the Placement Committee expects a revival after a relatively dull placement season in 2008-09.

Himanshu Nema, Head, IIMA Placement Committee, said, “We would hopefully see not just our regular partners but also many new and exciting names that would ensure that our students are spoilt for choice.”

He added, “We expect to see global consulting firms, investment banks, FMCGs and technology firms. In addition, we are also proactively approaching public and social enterprises.”

According to him, a path breaking initiative would be the entry day, a day dedicated to firms that are smaller in scale but offering exciting profiles to students interested in becoming entrepreneurs.

“Such an environment acts as a testing ground for these students where they can work closely with senior management and see from close quarters how a company is managed,” he said.

It may be noted that final placements in 2009 happened in February-March 2009 and lasted nine days. Although the time taken was higher than usual, IIMA was the first and fastest campus in the country to place all its students.

Given that times have improved since, it is expected that the premier institute will complete the process this time around in lesser time.

Incidentally, the IIMA has recently featured in the top 100 ranking of the world renowned magazine Economist, a survey conducted across major business schools including Harvard, INSEAD, London Business School and Stern.

The school was the only Indian business school to feature in the top 100 premier business management institutes of the world.

Vivek Jain, a coordinator of the Placement Committee said, “We ensure that we leave no stone unturned in making placements a success and carrying forward the legacy of IIMA.”

Of late, I have been giving a lot of thought to which schools I should target when I am ready for my

Of late, I have been giving a lot of thought to which schools I should target when I am ready for my MBA. Though I will be applying a few years from now and probably the list will change many times during this period, it helps to have a list to start with.

There are a few assumptions that I made before starting to type this post – that I will be able to attain a score of 700+ on the GMAT, and that class profiles for top MBA programs would hold true even after a couple of years (after all, nothing much changes in a few years’ time). Whatever I am going to state in this post is totally my opinion, and as is true for most things of this nature, what works for me might not work for someone else. Now that I am done with the disclaimer, on to the list.

The first schools that I seriously considered were Harvard and Stanford. However, keeping my age in mind, I am thinking of dropping both. Of the two, Harvard looks for leadership experience. For an applicant who is 26 or 27 years old, they might be looking for leadership potential, but for someone who is around 30, they would be looking for real-life leadership experiences. I believe that this is one of my strong areas, and would probably not be too much of an issue. However, what I am worried about is that for someone close to 30 (which is quite a few years above their class average), they might be looking for stories that changed the world (such as resolved conflict in Darfur, initiated the process of dismantling nuclear weapons factories in Iran, or helped restart talks between North Korea and USA). Of course the three examples of changing the world were totally made up and I guess no one in HBS has done such amazing things. For someone who has done something along the lies of the hypothetical examples I have stated, he would not need an MBA to advance in life. For Stanford, the requirements, if I can use that word loosely, are leadership experience (not to the extent of Harvard, but not much less either) and instances of having done life altering things (similar to what HBS expects its older participants to have). After having spoken to alumni of both schools, it is very clear that Stanford is more selective, and that each of its MBA participants has a fascinating story to tell, which is not true of HBS to the extent that it is for the former. For these reasons, both of these schools are off my list for the moment. If I am able to resolve the conflicts in Afghanistan and Pakistan in the next few years, I will include both in my list!

MIT Sloan was the next school that I looked at. In my opinion, this is a fantastic school that is overlooked at times (I can’t help but wonder if that is because it is overshadowed by a little known school across the river). To me, it is a really good school, especially because of the emphasis it puts on technology. From what I have heard, the participants at this school are expert number-crunchers and outright brilliant, and being able to make it in would be nothing short of a great achievement. According to some, the weight that an MIT Sloan MBA carries is nothing less than one from HBS or Stanford. For now, it remains on my list.

Wharton comes next. I believe it is an all-round good fit for me. They seem to respect and value the experience that that a few more years of work brings in its participants (as compared to HBS and Stanford). They are balanced in their expectations (you don’t need to have eradicated poverty from the face of the earth to be able to get into the Wharton MBA program) and fair in their final selection of applicants.

Another school on my list is IMD Switzerland. Though according to many, it is more of a regional school, it is not too far from the top ones in terms of the graduates’ salaries, employment at 3 months after graduation, and such other criteria. Age-wise, this school is a perfect fit. I plan to keep this as a safe school. Of course given the huge number of factors that are looked at while evaluating an applicant, no school can really be called a safe school. However, IMD does not carry the same weight as a couple of other schools (INSEAD and LBS), and therefore, I will consider it to be an “easy reach” school.

The last school on my list, which is actually my first choice, is INSEAD. Considering my profile, experiences, expectations and post-MBA job preferences, this school is a perfect fit for me. I have always wanted to go for an MBA program that is of 1-year duration, where the student body is very diverse and has substantial varied work experience, learn a new language during the time, and also squeeze in a short internship. Post MBA, I would like to work in Europe, for one of the top consulting firms, and after a few years, establish my own company. Considering all of these, INSEAD is such a great fit for me that if it so happens that I get accepted to INSEAD, HBS, Stanford and Wharton, I will choose to attend the first.

As I have already stated earlier, this list is bound to undergo many revisions. What I am a little concerned about is that maybe I am not considering a few other schools, which would also be good fits for me, that I should. If anyone can help me add to or modify this list, please leave a comment.

It is human nature to strive to find meaning and purpose in our lives and to strive to improve not only ourselves, but the way we do business, the tools we use and the way we live. Innovation is the thought or action which allows new thoughts or things to evolve beyond our current standards and hence produces those very improvements we strive for.

Corporate and small business innovation leads to new products and technologies, new business processes, new ways of empowering and rewarding individuals, new ways of enhancing customer service and new ways of growing our markets.

Technology continues to evolve in exciting ways: products are faster, cheaper, smaller and provide infinitely more useful applications. Technological innovation provides new health, transport, communication and other technologies which immeasurably enhance our lives. Web 2.0 and cloud computing has provided new ways to integrate, network and communicate. Personally I wonder how I survived, or kept in touch with family, friends and business connections without my iPhone, Google, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and blogging applications. Now with SaaS applications and my iPhone I can run my business from home, Ayers Rock or the Eiffel Tower.

However it is innovation in societies which is most exciting. Social innovation is leading to a fundamental shift in values resulting in significant global gains. The Global Financial Crisis has caused a global rethink of values and an explosion in the number of social and philanthropic entrepreneurs who are making a significant and passionate contribution to society.

Social entrepreneurship is now one of the fastest growing sectors in post-graduate business education. INSEAD now offers MBA’s and PhDs in social entrepreneurship as do numerous other leading educational institutions. The Skoll Foundation defines social entrepreneurship as pioneering “… innovative and systemic approaches for meeting the needs of the marginalized, the disadvantaged and the disenfranchised – populations that lack the financial means or political clout to achieve lasting benefit on their own.”

Technology combined with entrepreneurship is providing innovative, constructive solutions to the social discord caused by poverty, fear, ignorance, war, environmental degradation etc. There are simply thousands of examples of investment in humanitarian businesses and community organisations whose raison d’etre is making a contribution to the society and the environment in which we live.

Organisations such as Kiva are helping to alleviate poverty by matching non-profit “investors” with borrowers who would otherwise have no means to establish self-sufficiency. “Kiva is the world’s first person-to-person micro-lending website, empowering individuals to lend to unique entrepreneurs around the globe”.

CDI, the Centre for Digital Inclusion, was started by Rodrigo Baggio when he was still at school and noticed the disparity in access to technology in his home city of Rio de Janeiro. His initiative to help disadvantaged people use technology to improve their communities and their lives has now evolved to providing “753 “Technology and Civic Engagement “ schools in 10 countries in Latin America, Africa and Asia. CDI has helped transform more than 1 million lives.”

Philanthropic foundations and responsible corporations are also enabling innovative and sustainable health, agricultural, education and economic initiatives in the poorest communities and countries, as well as assisting the under-privileged in economically advanced countries. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has global initiatives to improve health, develop agriculture and improve access to technology and education. They also have a significant program to provide education and a start in life for under-privileged students in the USA.

Social and technological innovations provide us with the means to achieve meaning and purpose and make our lives worth living by contributing within our own communities and to society as a whole.

The Beacon Review Daily highly recommends a new book by J. Frank Brown, the Dean of INSEAD. Below is an excerpt review:

“A lot of people talk about leadership and not that many actually do it,” Brown said in an interview with INSEAD Knowledge.

In his book, The Global Business Leader: Practical Advice for Success in a Transcultural Marketplace, Brown lists the hallmarks of leadership: openness, integrity, humility, a view of the present and the future, an optimistic outlook, the proper use of authority, and an understanding of personal and organisational objectives.

‘Transcultural’ leaders at the helm of international companies also need to be sensitive to other cultures and national differences. That means leaders today need to be willing to explore and travel. They need to be curious about other people and customs.

INSEAD, one of the top European business schools, has released its ‘Top Ten Articles’ for the third quarter. Heading the list is ‘A Practical Guide To Innovation’.

Author Professor Robert Goldsmith starts his commentary with: “What does innovation mean? It used to relate mainly to products, and that’s still important. But over the last decade or so, businesses have been putting more and more emphasis on innovating new services and business models as well. In light of this, it’s time companies take another look at how they manage innovation.”

His comments echo several articles on this blog, highlighting the implications of the shift from a product-based world to one where solutions and services dominate. When Goldsmith calls for new ways of managing innovation, he confirms the opportunity for those who are engaged in contracting. If you study his examples, many depend on forming the right alliances or negotiating rights from third parties.

His observations include: “Most of the information about managing innovation available today is siloed, addressing specific issues such as technology or finance. But as the boundaries of innovation expand, more managers will need practical knowledge and tools that transcend these functional silos.”

Once again, the experience of the contracts community in taking cross-functional perspectives and reconciling their differences provides the potential for a key role in the innovation process. But this demands a readiness to move beyond the transactional and to become far more embedded in product development and product lifecycle management.

A few of the most admired contracts groups have made this transition – som eby design, others by accident. But whereas a transactional focus slows the business and makes contracts appear negative, a product lifecycle focus ensures that offerings are brought to market with the right value-add capabilities.

It is true that in theory this efficiency would require less contracts staff. But the reality is that the groups providing value are the groups that find themselves growing. Innovation should be a keyword for anyone in contracts if they want a career.

Now I know exactly what the INSEADers mean when they say “these would be the quickest 10 month

Now I know exactly what the INSEADers mean when they say “these would be the quickest 10 months of your life”. I have been wanting to update my blog and I just cant find the time. As I write this post, in the back of my head there is this noise asking me to start studying for the finals (yes we do study at INSEAD). Ignoring that noise and moving on, let’s catchup.

Following Bintan, I made a trip to Bali (for my birthday weekend) and Bangkok last weekend. I hate to say this but Bali was rather disappointing in a lot of ways. It is one place where tourism is being over-exercised and everything is over-rated because locals know tourists will fall for any sort of crap. My highlight for the Bali trip was surfing. My first ever surfing lesson – I brilliantly bruise myself on my already bruised knee – crash into another learner – and manage to stand on the board for a full 3 seconds :| I have admit that the red flags all over the beach displaying skulls did not make it any easier mentally. But if you are in Bali, I highly highly recommend that you take one of these surfing lessons and hit the waves (mostly high-tides and very strong). Another place that I highly recommend is Kudeta which is right by the beach and has an amazing DJ and open space serving delicious food. Trying out some of the local restaurants is definitely a unique experience and so are the rice terraces. Overall, I think Bali is way over-rated and I would much rather go some place more untouched.

Moving on to Bangkok – in one word, F@$#*%^ AWSOME. Ok that’s two words. Bangkok deserves a post all for itself so I going to leave out details about that one in this post.

In terms of INSEAD, life is good. This is really as good as it gets. Partying, traveling, great people. great food, great apartments with amazing pools, and lots of fun stories. Its been 2 months since I landed in Singapore and this place never fails to amaze me. There has not been a single day when I went to bed and didn’t think “hmm… that was an interesting day, definitely a first”. 2 weeks ago was the first time I saw the library so packed with students, of course the midterms were around the corner but I had almost forgotten that there was a studying aspect to me being here. It’s amazing how everyone found it difficult to go back to studying after being complete party animals for the most part of P1. I must say that the midterms were a good kick in the @$$ reminding me to study harder. I started INSEAD “wanting” to be on the dean’s list but now that I think of it, I don’t even want to consider being on it. There are way too many people who can easily breeze through the courses and land on that list, while I struggle to study day and night. The dean’s list is essentially the top 5-6 people in every section and I know that I don’t stand a chance in my section so why bother and torture myself. Plus I love my social life too much

Last week’s highlight was campus bidding. My-oh-my. Disastrous. Enough said!

The deadline for acceptance for R1 at INSEAD was the 5th of June. I’d read somewhere that people start receiving calls a couple of days before. I decided to check out the BW MBA forum for any activity on Thursday morning and was surprised to see that a few people posted that they’d received calls and were accepted.

It was really stressful to wait through Thursday and not receive a call but early Friday morning, while at work I received a text message. I started getting excited, wondering if it was a voicemail from INSEAD. I opened the message and it was indeed a voicemail. It was really great to hear the admissions co-ordinator telling me that I’d been accepted to study at INSEAD in January 2010.

Next steps are to investigate financing options. Its really daunting to have to raise much of the amount required for the fees and living expenses in the next 5 months, especially because a large deposit (in developing country terms) is required by the end of the month.

More on Typhoon Ketsana:
Sept. 26, 2009 – typhoon Ketsana hit the Philippines. The tragedy claimed more than 140 lives and displaced over 430,000 people. It’s the worst flooding recorded in the country since 1967. Manila and surrounding areas were lashed with heavy rains and flash floods for nine hours, leaving some areas under 20 feet of water. The capital and 23 other provinces have been declared under a STATE OF CALAMITY. Many people are missing or trapped and numerous areas are still submerged in floodwater. More than 1.2 million people have no electricity. Victims are in dire need of basic relief goods like food, water and clothing. The death toll is expected to climb, and so are the number of missing and injured.

Bos Kelompok Kriminal hingga Pejabat Kepolisian Jadi Dosen Tamu
Kamis, 01 Oktober 2009

http://jawapos.co.id/

Selain program MBA, Skolkovo mengajarkan teori ilmu manajemen.

Rencananya, mereka diminta memaparkan topik tentang tantangan manajemen.
