In a little over six hours from now people will be crowding into their seats with popcorn, candy, and sodas. Yes, it’s true that about six hours from now, it will be the beginning of the end. The end of the saga I mean. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2, will be premiering all over tonight. Tonight will be the last midnight premiere of the vampire saga, has people of all ages in love.

I think Stephanie Meyer is proud of what her novels have brought about. They have brought about the vampire craze, just as Harry Potter brought about the wizard craze. Without Meyer’s novels we wouldn’t have all of the great movies and fan fiction. So lets thank Meyer for her work and not be said that it is the end, but happy and thankful for the era she has brought about.

So don’t forget to get your tickets to see the final installment of The Twilight Saga.

It is always so amazing to see the different ways that people are able to utilize readily available, sustainable materials for building solutions…this one in particular happened to be a house made from beer bottles!

Tito Ingenieri, a man from Argentina, was at a loss for materials to build his home. The solution? Collecting beer bottles over the course of 19 years to construct a place to live. The ingenious idea brings new life to 6 million beer bottles which might have otherwise become recycling, or waste.

[Aesops Glass Bottle Store, Adelaide]

Who knew guzzling beer could lead to the creation of a dramatic ceiling feature?!

Chapter Seventeen So, what Rachel said, later, when we were back and safe and hoping that Dean would

Chapter Seventeen

So, what Rachel said, later, when we were back and safe and hoping that Dean would just think the boat had been stolen, was that she’d seen the giant dinosaur shark, Megaladon, come cruising along to collect our lobster. Like a taxi.

The spindly thing caught onto the giant fin with it’s pincers, hitching a ride.

Just in case I thought she might have been hallucinating, Rachel then explained that there were also two mermaids along for the jaunt. Well, not mermaids exactly, since they had not only tails, but beards.

All this, behind my innocent back, of course, while I watched her shocked face in the underwater moonlight. It explained the ‘woosh’ that helped me reach her: that was the wake of the monster as it turned. She said.

I don’t call her a liar. But I’m pretty sure that my own vision of being as tall as a mountain, and meeting a lady made of light were inside my own head in spite of how solid they seemed. And, where one kind of mind needs an overdose of holy herbs, another just needs some excitement, and bit of a bump on the head. Perhaps.

The only thing that still leaves me uncertain, is this.

I’m not dead. Far from it. I’m back at home, in the land of light and power, typing this ‘story’ blog for you on my computer.

Remember I said there was no way I could swim all the way back to land?

So how come am I here? And Rachel, safe at her dad’s house, sending me text messages about what movie we should see next Saturday night?

Ullu’ha is the answer.

A few minutes after I struck out, weary, determined, yet resigned, to see how close I could get us before we drowned in each other’s arms, Ullu’ha came.

A hippo. Came waa-ay out to sea. On purpose. To find and save two humans, and swim them safe back to shore.

She ploughed through the surf like a pedalling tank, Rachel and me on her back, our heads just high enough for gasps of air if we timed it right.

And as she swam, she thanked me. She told me what we had done was important. We’d saved not only a village, but a princess of the deeps. We’d slowed down the start of a war between humans and the people of Mer; resolved a diplomatic incident of sorts. She told me not to feel bad about Outjie. He dreamed of South Africa, but had nothing to go home to, really. She told me that lives only last as long as they must, and to trust the hour of passing; trust and know that all is just as it should be.

All this, she told me, quite clear in my head.

Was it the halo of Salvia, echoing? Was it my exhaustion, clothing my thoughts?

If a hippo can swim out, locate, and rescue two humans, then maybe, just maybe, it can also put words in my head.

And if hippos can do that, maybe lobsters are sacred, and Megaladon isn’t extinct, and maybe, but only maybe, mermaids might even exist.

The beautiful town of Jaujac, France recently became part of an art installation designed by Marseille-based artist Gaëlle Villedary. A visionary design made out of 168 rollers of grass attempts to connect the inhabitants with the surrounding nature.

The first time I visited Las Vegas I was 10 years old. My family was coming back from a trip visiti

The first time I visited Las Vegas I was 10 years old. My family was coming back from a trip visiting my grandparents in Taiwan, and thought it would be fun to stop off in Vegas when our flight landed on the West Coast. My tiny 10 year old brain did not know that Vegas was sin city and that basically I was in grown up Disneyland. From my vantage point Vegas was this wonderful place that had tons of funny shaped hotels with roller coasters on the inside, top notch all-you-can-eat-buffets with unrestricted treats, and pools that had strangely attractive busty maintenance people.

totally normal…

One of the most memorable aspects of this trip was my visit to the Bellagio. Not only did they have unlimited creme brûlée, enchanting fountains, but they had the most incredible ceiling I had ever seen. As far as the eye could see was covered in beautiful blown glass to resemble flowers and sea creatures. This was my first experience with Dale Chihuly and even at that young age I remembered this artist, mostly because his name is really fun to say-Chi-hoo-lee. Chiii hoooo leeee. Yup, that is going to be stuck in your head all day.

When I learned his installments were coming to RVA I got so excited. I mean look at it. When you think of blown glass you usually think of dusty tchotchkes at your grandmother’s house, you know that thing that isn’t that impressive that your mother/grandmother cherishes? The thing that always ends up breaking anyway…

This stuff is different. The pieces are transformative. Mostly because they are huge. They makes you feel tiny when you look at them because the glass towers above you. They are incredibly colorful and are so shiny they almost look fluid. The VMFA has Chihuly’s collection until February and you simply have to check it out.

My favorite thing about his work is that it looks like candy. Every time I have seen it I have to stop myself from trying to lick the glass. It will transport you back to that scene from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory that every kid loves and dreams about. You know, the scene right before the scene everyone hates because they go down a weird tunnel that has creepy centipede images and it is really terrifying and traumatizing…

This specific installment truly makes you feel like you are either under the sea or in space. It transports you to another world and gives you an out-of-body experience.

If you aren’t a member of The VMFA yet, I highly suggest you consider joining. If you are a student it is only $10 dollars, and this exhibit is $20 dollars if you are not a member. You immediately save money by joining. Additionally, you could pay $85 dollars for a family pass and cover everyone in your family for a year! Knock out those Christmas presents folks.

I will say the installments are large and in charge, but there are only a few of them. It isn’t necessarily a small exhibit because there is a ton to see and it is all amazing, but it doesn’t take too long to stroll through. Try to take your time and really examine each piece though. Don’t just look at the big pictures, look at each individual bend and twirl, because you will see other things that are hiding. Like this octopus Trey found:

I was very impressed with the exhibit. I hope you will be to!

Also, if anyone wants to find this kids shirt in regular people size, I really want it:

Chapter Sixteen

Luckily. Luckily there wasn’t time to scream, so my mouth was shut when the water smashed over my head.

I was tumbled like a sock in a washer. Wherever it is that the other sock goes, never to be seen again, that’s where I was going, and I knew it. There was no way I could swim from here, back to land, even without night-feeding sharks to contend with.

I considered screaming, just to speed things up.

But then, I saw Rachel.

Outjie dying was one thing, Rachel dying, quite another.

It was me who got her into this. Well, her too, especially this last bit, but me who started it, all the same. And now, she was going to die.

Under water, everything was slow, the way it’s meant to be when you’re dying.

The moon spotlighted Rachel’s face, her beautiful hair tendrilled around it, her eyes wide, and her limbs thrashing in a way that didn’t speak of sensible treading-water, make-your-way-to-the surface behaviour.

My mother had told me what to do in this situation. She loved teaching me underwater safety, living in her make-believe land where I’d one day ‘wake up’ and start wanting to spend half my life in frog feet like she did. What you do is this. You let the person drown. You wait for them to stop moving, for their eyes to glaze over. (My mother liked to get graphic.) Then and only then, do you start trying to save them. The theory is that a floppy person can easily be hauled onto a boat to receive CPR, while a struggling one can take you both down.

I had two problems with this. The first had to do with a lack of either a functional boat or any CPR skills. The second had to do with the idea of watching Rachel drown.

This was flatly not an option.

Instead, I did something that had never been an option before.

I kissed her.

Helped by a sudden lucky ‘woosh’ of current, I hauled myself over to Rachel, clamped my strong left arm behind her neck and down under her armpit, covered her mouth with mine to prevent her from gulping anything other than second-hand air, and with my strong bowler’s right and both my cyclist’s legs, I kicked us up to the surface.

When we got there, I discovered the source of her problem.

“Megaladon,” she gasped.

Chapter Fourteen To my surprise, getting back to the cottage and dealing with my mom was the easy pa

Chapter Fourteen

To my surprise, getting back to the cottage and dealing with my mom was the easy part. Nobody guessed at my day. They’d even forgotten Rachel’s behaviour at the restaurant, they were so full of babble about Outjie and the hippo.

The hard part wasn’t even having to think of Outjie dead. Part of me felt sad for him, most of me felt very relieved. When it tried to cross my mind that I was the one who had killed him, I batted it into the bushes and ignored it. No problem.

The hard bit came after everyone had gone to bed, and Rachel crept through to haul me out of my blankets, insisting that we go and check on the lobster.

Everything had been so wall-to-wall, it was only just starting to sink in that I was safe, I was free. I’d been enjoying the freedom of lying down without being tied down. The freedom to breathe without a gag in my mouth. The freedom of not having to wonder whether I’d ever see another sunrise.

Now, here was Rachel, insisting that we go back out there. Insisting that the lobster needed to go to the deeps, and so, if it was still in the surf, we would have to steal the boat.

Safe in a comfy bed, I was quite clear that there were no ‘people’ under the sea who were brewing up a tsunami. All that crazy wooha had died along with Outjie. But Rachel, well, I’d done a great job convincing Rachel.

I tried to tell her that if she was so keen she could do it alone. She threatened to tell my mom everything, if I didn’t go with her. And, she called me a coward.

Minutes later, we were back on the beach, slicing through moonlight on our way to go check on the lobster.

Please, please, have just gone away already. Surely, having got as far as the surf, the big, stupid thing would have crawled off down to the reef by now?

But no, of course, it hadn’t, and Rachel insisted I help her load it onto the rubber dinghy.

If I’d come through all this just to drown after all, I was going to kill her.

Chapter Fifteen

The moon was high and the sea was calm. ‘Calm’ in Mozambique is a relative thing. It means nice regular, solid waves, just right for surfing. It meant we got to ride past the breakers without risk of capsizing, but not without me biting my tongue more than once.

I rode with Rachel, right close to the engine, wishing I’d worn something warmer. The night air and the spray were already making me shudder, and the swell made me want to throw up.

What was under the swell, I wasn’t thinking about.

The lobster was sprawled up front, looking evil in the eerie midnight light. Alien, coming to getcha. Rachel wanted me to go babysit so it didn’t fall out, but I simply refused to move. If it fell out, good riddance. The sooner we got home, the better. Nothing she could do, she had to drive.

If I’d realised what might happen, though, I’d have cuddled the beast in my lap.

Just as we reached the deeps, water churned over my feet. The boat was only rubber. The lobster was super-spiky.

There wasn’t even time to scream.
