Why do we lead worship? I mean what are you aiming at as you lead worship? I always joke with my wife that all I want to do is make someone cry during worship.

For so long I have believed that I should be aiming to put God in front of the people using songs, scripture and pray and that little magical thing called “The Anointing” (please excuse the sarcasm). Then if God’s presence “manifests” then you have really struck the jackpot but that hardly happens, or at least in the churches I’ve worshipped or lead worship in. (maybe there is something wrong with me, but that just makes me normal doesn’t it?)

However I am starting to believe that there is more. Sure we must put God in front of the people because He is the focus of our worship, can I get an AMEN! Yes we also should pursue His manifest Presence; I live for those times when you realize that nothing else really matters. But what happens if by our worship leading we can usher in not only God’s presence but His Kingdom so that it becomes “real”, touching people’s hearts for sure but also changing circumstances, lifestyles, lives, bodies, situations etc?

So what am I talking about, all this “Kingdom” stuff. Well you know how we pray “Your Kingdom come, Your will be done”. Well imagine if our worship leading made God’s Kingdom come, not only inside the 4 walls of the church building but out in the ‘Burbs where we live, inner city, business where we work or the hospital/clinic where all the sick people are. What would that look like? How would it happen?

One thing I know is that this forces me to take His Kingdom and worship outside the 4 walls and that’s exciting. It speaks of more than just a nice times of sitting and soaking, which I absolutely love, but it means that after we are drenched in His presence we are invited to go outside and get a few people wet. It speaks of action and obedience which is so much more than just a setlist of songs.

This for me is a pretty loaded concept and something I am wrestling with so I’m really just asking a question and hopefully putting this up there on our radar screens.

When I type, I sometimes let my thumbs take turns at the spacebar. It depends how fast I type, which depends on my train of thought. Am I raring to go, or do I have to pause every few words? See, my right thumb is used to dominating the spacebar. If I’m typing quickly, my right thumb involuntarily, reflexively taps the spacebar. If I have to stop and think for a second, my left thumb gets a turn, and it generally feels pretty good, like I’m ambidextrous, because my left upper limb and its digits are practically vestigial, and the slower, meditative push with my thumb is different than the tasks I usually give it, like helping hold things when my right hand is busy. It might also be good for hitchhiking – I haven’t tried that yet. Also, thumb wrestling, but no where near as adept as Righty. Yet.

This evening after Institute class, quite a few of us stayed after to play volleyball (and this was after I rehearsed with the Institute choir because someone asked if I could sing, and I said “alto” and I was basically the lone alto until the girl with the solo joined me in the chorus of “O Holy Night” because I can be social when I feel like it but I also knew I wouldn’t be able to perform because I have a prior commitment but it was nice singing anyway and I wanted some physical activity which also happens to be a convenient way to observe people and get to know them without actually having to talk much). We rotated players in for each time teams changed servers.

So I was on the court sometime during the third or fourth game, left net. Volleyball is not my sport of choice, mostly because, well, it favors tall people. I can set and bump just fine, and I can hustle and dig, but I am definitely not the most comfortable at the net. I laugh when I put my arms up in blocking position, because I know that’s not me, and I just don’t have the ups. So when the serve lobbed over and back and the ball arced its way in a wonky parabola to my part of the court, and when my elbows weren’t bent just so, putting my thumbs more vertical than in a proper setting position, the ball landed hard on my left thumb and jammed it.

And now my left thumb just sits, hesitant, distrustful. It hurts to put any sort of pressure on it; it hurts to stretch my fingers to see how big my hand is. As I’m typing, my right thumb gets carried away, virtually dancing on the spacebar, almost mocking Lefty. Occasionally I reprimand Righty and give the left thumb a few chances to push the spacebar ever so gingerly. I should hope full-functionality returns, albeit slowly.

Sometimes I feel like my left thumb: bruised, a little less confident, therefore a little less valued. As I’ve sometimes set my left hand aside so my right hand could do the more “important” things “correctly,” at times I’ve resigned to aloofness, giving others the spotlight, the attention they deserve so much more than I. Then, even given simple tasks, my left thumb still gets hurt, as I do in my shortcomings, and the pain often feeds into greater weakening, lesser self-esteem, deeper not-good-enough-ness.

But, sometimes, I feel like my left thumb: hopeful, fixable, healable, lovable – deserving love; eager, ready to serve in any capacity, regardless of relative skill or coordination. Building sureness, boldness; ever determined, grateful, and indebted for whatever help comes my way. A continually waxing belief that I have worth, a great price.

“Come Thou Fount” finishes that list of songs I began back in April – the ones I can’t live without.

To recap the previous nine:
Samuel Barber, Adagio for Strings
Indigo Girls, “Galileo”
Bee Gees, “Stayin’ Alive”
Arvo Pärt, Spiegel im Spiegel
10,000 Maniacs, “These Are Days”
Ennio Morricone, “Gabriel’s Oboe” – The Mission Soundtrack
Kermit the Frog, “The Rainbow Connection”
Patty Griffin, “Mary”
Black Eyed Peas Featuring Justin Timberlake, “Where Is The Love”

“Come Thou Fount” fits. Everything about it appeals to me: that itself is an appeal, a prayer, a supplication, a testimony; that the simple melody builds to the same part of every verse before it descends as it began. It’s brilliant, inspiring. It radiates hope and optimism. It attests to and embodies the Atonement.

I hope the thumb analogy works, especially as it correlates to the hymn.

Enjoy.

Come, thou fount of every blessing,
Tune my heart to sing thy grace;
Streams of mercy, never ceasing,
Call for songs of loudest praise.
Teach me some melodious sonnet,
Sung by flaming tongues above.
Praise the mount! I’m fixed upon it,
Mount of thy redeeming love.

Here I raise my Ebenezer;
Here by thy great help I’ve come;
And I hope, by thy good pleasure,
Safely to arrive at home.
Jesus sought me when a stranger,
Wandering from the fold of God;
He, to rescue me from danger,
Interposed His precious blood.

O to grace how great a debtor
Daily I’m constrained to be!
Let thy goodness, like a fetter,
Bind my wandering heart to thee.
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it,
Prone to leave the God I love;
Here’s my heart, O take and seal it,
Seal it for thy courts above.

We should all want to be wise and careful stewards of the beautiful planet we call home. But most of us realise that humans in general are not being good stewards. We are wasteful with our natural resources and have reduced biodiversity. Therefore, when we read about groups and organisations calling for a ‘green revolution’ and a new relationship between humanity and nature it is easy to agree with their ideas.

However, certain aspects of the modern green movement that is permeating every segment of our society are not about protecting the environment. You don’t have to dig very deep to discover the true beliefs of the influential leaders who are using genuine concerns about the environment to promote an agenda of fear and control. Please carefully consider the implications of the opinions that they so openly and freely express:

dangers are caused by human intervention, and it is only through
changed attitudes and behavior that they can be overcome.
We must therefore absolutely and urgently look for new ways.”

The Earth is a living entity, a biological organism
With the expansion of the patriarchal religions
species, corralled and tamed as an integral part of the biosphere,
as we are as individual creatures. It may be that the destiny of
mankind is to become tamed, so that the fierce, destructive, and
see no difference between our earth and the divine.
This ancient simple truth is slowly dawning again upon

I was greatly challenged this week by our (Essentials Green online cours) topic of “Kingdom Expectation.” More to the point I was personally challenge on whether I really expect God to show up, to act in my life and in our corporate gatherings. The reality is that though I say I believe that God can and will act, I don’t really expect Him to. Maybe this is a kind of insult. The Great King of the universe promises (and He always keeps His promises) to care for, to act on behalf of, to work powerfuly in the lives of His children and yet His children go through their lives as if they are poor, orphans without hope and without a future.

Maybe the issue is transferring head knowledge to heart belief and action. What we believe in our heads needs to be expressed in the way we live, in the things we say and do. What does this look like when “Kingdom Expectation” and our worship services collide? Maybe we are more intentional about creating space for people to open up their hearts, to share their burdens, their sin, and their hurt. Maybe it is creating space for prayer that is not simply a list of needs, but is a real conversation with an Almighty Father who we know and expect will act for our good.

One things is for certain. I do not want to continue in a lifeless, powerless way of life. I desire to see lives transformed and made really alive, to see people reflecting the image of our Creator.

For:The Essentials Green Online Worship Values Course with Dan Wilt

Cultural relevance has been a much discussed topic with churches for sometime. Another term for it might be “seeker sensitive” or “seeker friendly”. Of course many churches might agree that it is a good idea to make the worship service atmosphere culturally relevant, but taking the steps to change so that it is doesn’t always happen. Someone reading this may ask what culturally relevant means. It is much more than using music that has a contemporary sound. It means using language that unchurched people understand. It means addressing real issues with Biblical answers. It means studying the culture around us and asking ourselves how we can engage it, how we can influence it.

Accessibility is an issue that is greatly affected by trying to be culurually relevant, though not dependent on it. One great example of this is in the area of music. The church I am part of decided about 7 or 8 yeasrs ago to change the music style to be more contemporary, more culturally relevant. This decision made it more accessible for unchurched and younger people to conect with the music and thus to connect with God in worship. The result, however, is that this made corporate worship time less accessible for many older people or people. The challenge for worship leaders then is to find creative ways to engage those from previous generations, previous culture along with the current culture. This can be done in a variety of ways. It can be as simple as using one old song every week, or taking older songs and “rejuvenating” them – the melody stays the same, stays familiar, but the sound and feel is altered so that it has a more culturally relevant tone.

For: The Essentials Green Online Worship Values Course with Dan Wilt

Why should we expect God to move within a service? Why should we lead worship with an expectation of the Kingdom coming? I think the short answer to these questions is that if we don’t expect it, we won’t recognize it when it comes or we will be unprepared to receive it.

Now I want to say a quick word about what Kingdom expectation is. The kingdom is the time when Christ rules the earth and following that when the war with the dragon is over. That is an event in the future at the end of the world. But God doesn’t make us just wait till then. He gives us small tastes of what it will be like when that time comes. This can be experienced when we help the poor; when we serve each other; and when we are passionately worshiping the King.

The second part of Kingdom expectation is the word “expectation.” I love how Dan Wilt defines it: Hope in action (1). This means that we hope something will happen and so we prepare for it to happen.

So what does this look like in a service? For starters it means that we are flexible to what God’s doing in the service. This might mean changing a few songs in the middle of the service or completely throwing out the set list. It means that we pray for God to move and then watch closely to see if there is any evidence that he is. These are just a few way that we can bring kingdom expectation into our services. By doing these things I hope that we will be able to recognize it and be completely prepared for it.

Firstly, welcome to the new Pilobolus blog. As this is a new foray into the blogosphere for us, we will do our best to keep this corner of the interweb free of dustbunnies and meaningless dribble (most of the time). Subscribe to our blog via RSS, FeedReader, or watch our Twitter and Facebook posts for blog updates to stay abreast of what is fresh and new with Pilobolus and our zany world of collaboration and creativity.

Secondly, depending on where you discovered Pilobolus for the first time, be it through the latest NFL shadow commercials that you saw on TV or on stage performing repertory over the last few decades, you might not know the whole story. So, here it is:

Pilobolus began in 1971 at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire. A group of students with conventional liberal arts backgrounds in science, english, philosophy, and sports decided to take a dance class. In the course of that year they choreographed a short piece titled “Pilobolus.” This work drew the attention of a number of helpful dignitaries, including modern dance great Alwin Nikolais, and soon “Pilobolus,” the dance, had evolved into Pilobolus, the dance company. By 1973, Pilobolus had picked up two female dancers and presented its first performances at the American Dance Festival. (The company has appeared there nearly every year since.)

An older recording of some early Pilobolus works

Now, nearly 40 years after its conception, the small four-man group has evolved into a pioneering American arts organization of the 21st century. The company now revolves around three nuclei of activity: Pilobolus Dance Theater, a radically innovative and globally acclaimed concert dance company; The Pilobolus Institute, unique educational programming for schools, colleges, and public arts organizations as well as a series of classes and leadership workshops for corporate executives, employees, and business schools; and Pilobolus Creative Services, a division specializing in a wide range of movement services for film, advertising, publishing, commercial clients, and corporate events.

Pilobolus is based in Washington Depot, Connecticut and performs for stage and television audiences all over the world. Pilobolus works appear in the repertories of a number of major dance companies – the Joffrey, Feld, Ohio, Arizona, and Aspen/Santa Fe Ballets in the U.S., the Ballet National de Nancy et de Lorraine and the Ballet du Rhin in France, and Italy’s Verona Ballet – and since 1999 the company has begun collaborating with multi-disciplinary artists from outside the company, including the famed writer and illustrator, Maurice Sendak; the Israeli choreographic team, Inbal Pinto and Avshalom Pollak; the remarkable American puppeteer, Basil Twist; the lead writer of SpongeBob SquarePants, Steve Banks; and the film composer, David Poe.

Pilobolus has received a number of prestigious honors, including the Berlin Critic’s Prize, the Brandeis Award, the New England Theatre Conference Prize, and a Primetime Emmy Award for outstanding achievement in cultural programming. In June 2000 Pilobolus received the Samuel H. Scripps American Dance Festival Award for lifetime achievement in choreography and in 2004 the company was featured on CBS’ “60 Minutes.” In 2007 Robby Barnett, Michael Tracy and Jonathan Wolken received the Kenneth and Harle Montgomery Endowment Fellowship from Dartmouth College.

The physical vocabularies of Pilobolus works are not drawn from traditions of codified dance movement but are invented – emerging from intense periods of improvisation and creative play. This process has been the source of much interest, in response to which the company inaugurated the Pilobolus Institute, an educational outreach program using the art of choreography as a model for creative thinking in any field. The Institute offers sustained programs for both children and adults around the country, as well as a series of Leadership Workshops for corporations and business schools. Recent work includes programs at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, Dartmouth College’s Tuck School of Business, and the Babcock School at Wake Forest University. The Institute also maintains an ongoing residency in the Theater Studies Program at Yale University.

The third arm of the company’s activity is Pilobolus Creative Services, a choreographic and performance collective providing movement design and production for commercial applications in business and advertising. PCS has made television spots for Mobil, Ford, Toyota, Opel, and Hyundai, created live events for IBM, McKinsey, United Technologies, Dupont, and Merck, and has presented gala performances for Joe Boxer, Marithe Girbaud, MAC Cosmetics and Krizia. In 2007, the company created and presented 6 acclaimed performances during the 79th Annual Academy Awards, as well as produced a series of original segments for the “Oprah Winfrey Show” and “Late Night with Conan O’Brien.” PCS has also produced two books for national distribution, Twisted Yoga and The Human Alphabet, and releases an annual calendar of dance photography in collaboration with a number of noted American photographers. In spring 2009, a spot that Pilobolus Creative Services created for the NFL Network was nominated for an Emmy Award in Sports, and the company’s website was nominated for a Webby Award in Best Photography.

The 2009 season marks the middle of Pilobolus’ 39th year. The company has continued to grow, expanding and refining its unusual collaborative methods to produce a body of over 100 choreographic works, and while it has become a stable and influential force in the world of dance, Pilobolus remains as protean and surprising as ever.

WORK TIME: Approx. 2 hrs

FINAL PROJECT TIME: 4min 1sec

CAMERA: Panasonic SDR-H80

EDITED WITH: Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 9 (4GB RAM, Windows 7)

A small recap of Day 2 of the Al-Maghrib “Seerah: The Sheperd’s Path” course with Shaykh AbdulBary Yahya with Banu Noor (in Orlando, Florida).

SET-UP:

I just carried my small camera around, getting whatever interviews and b-roll shots (random, filler footage) I could get. I only taped a few snippets of the class (things like the breathing exercise, when the shaykh recited some verses, etc.). One thing that I learned, a little late, was that whenever you’re going to do interviews, write down the questions. It’s going to help you so greatly in actually getting people to do an interview. They see you as more professional and think about it deeper. Another thing, to organize my footage, I tried to have a little ‘clapper’ shots. You’ve probably seen a clapper before:

Though I didn’t have a cool one like that, I just took a shot of a piece of paper that said “Day 1, Day 2, Day 3…”. Therefore, when I looked at my footage, I know everything after that one clip was from that day, until another ‘clapper’ clip showing the next day.

EDITING:

Basic cutting, tried to use more straight cuts (as I usually use fades and dissolves, perhaps a little too much). Also, discovered a new effect in Sony Vegas called “Light Rays.” Achieves a very nice effect, especially for Banu Noor! (Noor=light).

FINAL THOUGHTS:

It’s hard to capture any experience on video. This is only a small trigger to remind those who attended the class of how much fun and beneficial the experience was.

Share.

“For: The Institue of Contemporary and Emerging Worship Studies, St. Stephens University, Essentials Green Online Worship Theology Course with Dan Wilt.”

I must first of all say I am thoroughly enjoying doing the Essentials Course in worship studies. I have found their materials so thought provoking and yet so balanced and mature. Definitely check the course out if you have a heart for worship!

Anyway back to what I wanted to say…In the church I grew up in there were often differing opinions on worship, and some pretty strong ones at that (I see those heads nodding ). One of them was on “cultural relevance” and “accessibility”, i.e. we were dealing with issues of how we make the “church” cool to other people and maybe even to ourselves because even though most “religious” people won’t admit it, they are bored out of their minds.

It sad to know that these “wars” still continue today, when really the problem isn’t with the other guy who wants to rock out or sing hymns. The problem was us all along. (swallowing bitter pill…). The way I see it the problem has never been should we sing hymns or not or should we sing the latest songs off the Worship Top 40, the problem is about who we are serving.

We all know that worship is about us (wait quick double take, what did he say?) At least that’s what we believe if we are honest with ourselves. Even us worship leaders make worship about us rather than first God and THEN others.

I think worship should be directed towards God but we should also be serving each other by choosing actions, meditations, prayers and songs that help others to connect with God. Far too often worship leaders under the banner of “cultural relevance” choose the songs they want to sing instead of the songs the community, in front of them needs to connect with God. As leaders we need to keep at the front of our minds the question “what is going to help these people connect with Jesus today?”

The other issue goes a little deeper. I have always found that in these churches where there are struggles in worship it is because choosing the right song has become the focus. It’s sort of like if you choose the right song (or my favourite song at the moment) then worship will be awesome, but if you don’t then worship will be rubbish.

That’s also not the point, I mean isn’t this about God and His presence? What God wants isn’t a song or sacrifice (depending on which Testament you choose to live in… jokes) he wants people who will come to Him in faith (Heb 11), He wants people who will worship in spirit and in truth (John 4) and He wants people who are humble (Psalm 51).

I once heard Graham Cooke say that as long as God’s presence is manifesting, that people are getting saved, that miracles are happening on a weekly basis and the poor are being looked after, you will always be relevant. Pretty powerful stuff hey. I think so often we hide behind “being culturally relevant” and choosing cool songs so we don’t have to own up to the fact that God left the building a long time ago.

As always I welcome any comments

"Most Americans do not know slavery not only exists in the world today, it flourishes," said Ron Soodalter, co-author of The Slave Next Door, in his presentation in the Pegasus Ballroom Monday morning.

"Somewhere around 27 million people are in bondage in the world today. Now, that’s over twice the number as were trafficked in chains in the entire 350 years of the African slave trade."

Soodalter, an active abolitionist and historian, kicked off International Education Week at UCF as the keynote speaker for the Second Annual International Breakfast. The Slave Next Door presentation concluded the three-part series on "Slavery’s Resurgence" facilitated by the Office of the Special Assistant to the President for Global Perspectives and the International Services Center.

The series began with Somaly Mam, a Cambodian human rights activist, former slave and author of The Road of Lost Innocence: The True Story of a Cambodian Heroine, when she shared her experiences in September.

In October, Micheline Slattery, a human-rights activist and former restavek, or domestic child slave, in both Haiti and the United States, addressed about 300 attendees.

Modern-day slavery includes around 800,000 men, women and children trafficked each year around the world. According to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Web site, about 17,500 of them end up in the United States, with a high percentage received in Florida.

Soodalter suggests a simple Google search on human trafficking for astounding results.

In spite of major federal legislation and anti-trafficking laws passed in 43 states, 103 human-trafficking convictions have resulted, Soodalter said.

Trafficking remains hidden, is largely unreported and difficult to identify. According to the 2009 Trafficking in Persons, or TIP, report, published by the U.S. Department of State, forced labor/involuntary servitude represents the majority of human-trafficking cases in the world. The co-author of Soodalter’s book, Kevin Bales, wrote the original 156-page TIP report, titled “Trafficking Persons in the United States — A Report to the National Institute of Justice.”

“The whole thing is disserving and extending,” said retired UCF foreign language professor David Gurney. “It contributes to the antagonism from people in underdeveloped countries to Western civilizations or Western countries.”

In the 1850s, purchasing a slave ran roughly $1,200, the equivalent of around $40,000 in today’s money. The reality is purchasing a slave today costs as little as $100, which makes them affordable and disposable, Soodalter said.

A trafficking victim lives in fear of violence or the threat of violence daily, he said.

Shawn Cox, victim witness coordinator and licensed clinical social worker with the United States Attorney’s Office, advocates that trafficking is a crime of absolute power over someone. According to the report Cox co-authored, “Victims of Human Trafficking and Trauma,” the psychological consequences of a victim are similar to the consequences of severe or chronic child abuse or experiencing acts of terrorism.

"In case you thought slavery doesn’t touch you, guess again," Soodalter said. "Chances are, the clothes you wear, the food you eat, has been touched by slavery."

The good news is there have been some inroads made recently in the area of agricultural servitude, Soodalter said. When Taco Bell refused to stop buying produce picked by enslaved workers in an effort known as the "Ban the Bell" campaign, it set a precedent that several other companies, including McDonalds, A&W, Long John Silver’s, Pizza Hut, Whole Foods, Chipotle and Burger King, have followed, Soodalter said.

"The message is clear," Soodalter said. "Slavery and worker abuse will not be tolerated. Not here, not now, not ever."

Mark Freeman, public affairs coordinator for the Global Perspectives Office, said they are hoping to continue the series next spring since response has been incredible. Because of the series last spring, students on campus were so spurred into action they formed the unofficial student group “Students Against Slavery @ UCF,” Freeman said. “Students Against Slavery @ UCF” has a Facebook page, and Harry Coverston serves as the faculty advisor for the group.

"Spreading the word is the most important thing," said Frank Hegedus, a senior political science and international relations major. "There is only right now."

For: The Essentials Green Online Worship Values Course with Dan Wilt Why worry about cultural releva

For: The Essentials Green Online Worship Values Course with Dan Wilt

Why worry about cultural relevance? Really, aren’t Christians supposed to be “in the world but not of the world?” The answer to this question is so that non-Christians don’t think that we are out-of-the-world weirdos. Let’s face it, many people think that Christians are conservative ideologues who consider all music other than hymns and Gregorian chants to be Satanic. Now I don’t consider hymns and chants to be bad, but stylistically they are light years away from what people listen to on popular radio (or any other medium for that matter). I believe that we still need these styles for some people as it is part of their culture, but we cannot allow ourselves to be stereotyped which people then use to try and discredit us. Now in order to be relevant to the culture, we need to know what our culture is. The two key criteria I am going to look at for determining what culture(s) we are in are age and geography. I’m going to start with age. I’ve heard it said that whatever technology is the latest and greatest when someone is thirty or forty, that is the technology that they get “stuck” at. I think it is similar with styles of music. The older generation tends to have more people who like hymns and the younger generation tends to have more people who like rock. Now obviously there are exceptions to that rule, I personally like some hymns done on pipe organ and my grandparents never seem to be uncomfortable with the rock that I play with my band. However the important thing to remember is that both age groups need to worship and in order to be accessible to them we need to be relevant to their culture. The other criterion, as I said, is geography. Most genres of music are associated with a certain region in the world: southern gospel from the southern states; country from the American mid-west. The issue churches face today is that because of globalization and the internet through which music styles are now be exported, there may be several different style preferences represented in the congregation. Some large churches have resolved this problem by offering different services with different styles. However this option is not usually available to smaller churches. The solution will be unique to each church. I believe churches should look at the demographic they are targeting and what they are listening to. I would pick the most popular style that the group likes as long as you have the musical ability to achieve that style. That last phrase is important. Unless you have musicians who know how to play jazz, you are going to have a hard time creating a service where jazz is the main musical style. This goes back to integrity. Some people can’t play jazz and they should not be forced to try because they won’t own the music. Another thing churches should look at is if there is a style that is not being represented by any churches in their community. This could be an opportunity for the church to bring the light of Jesus to a group that might not be interested in the other churches. For example in my own community, I know a number of people who listen to rap, yet I have not heard of a single church who offers a service where the worship is rap. The final thing to remember is that the worship is not the only thing to draw people to the church. Preaching and programs play a big part. But worship is still important to consider. As I said at the beginning of the paragraph, the solution will be unique for each church and we need to carefully and prayerfully consider what the best style is to provide accessible worship to our local community.

Last Wednesday, the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety awarded 27 vehicles for receiving the highest ratings for “safest vehicles for 2010”. All 27 vehicles received an award recognizing them for doing the best job against protecting motorists in front, rear, side and rollover crash. All vehicles feature, Electronic stability control (EST), which is a new state of the art anti-rollover technology.

With a new criterion, the numbers were cut in more than half. 94 were tested and approved in 2009, in comparison to the 24 this year.

Ford Motor Co. and its Volvo unit received the most awards with six, followed by five awards apiece for Japanese automaker Subaru and German automaker Volkswagen AG and its Audi unit. However, Subaru was the only manufacturer with an IIHS in all four vehicles classifications in which it completes.

“With the addition of our new roof strength evaluation, our crash test results now cover all four of the most common kinds of crashes,” said IIHS president Adrian Lund in a statement. “Consumers can use this list to zero in on the vehicles that are on the top rung for safety.”

Below is the IIHS list of vehicles given a top safety pick.

LARGE CARS: Buick LaCrosse, Ford Taurus, Lincoln MKS, Volvo S80

MIDSIZE CARS: Audi A3, Chevrolet Malibu (built after October. 2009), Chrysler Sebring (4-door with optional ESC), Dodge Avenger, Mercedes C Class, Subaru Legacy, Subaru Outback, Volkswagen Jetta (4-door), Volkswagen Passat (4-door), Volvo C30.

“For : The Essentials Course Online Worship Course with Dan Wilt“

Accessibility and cultural relevance. For week 2 I’ve been greatly challenged by the media content. I wanted to go on and on with my posting for this week so I’ll continue here.

I was greatly touched by the message of being able to engage with people. We have different cultures, Russian, Philipino, African – all the continents, Cypriot, Dominican Republic – I could go on. Jesus made himself accessible to all races, creeds and people so I strive to be like Him and allow all peoples of the world the space to freely worship the Creator King.

Keeping our integrity is also at the very core of this. As we lead worship or make ourselves accessible to eachother, both in and outside of church, let’s keep our hearts and minds pure so that we are not hollow. I would be hurt if I thought someone I was sharing with thought I was not genuine, so keeping my integrity at all times is very important.

Being comfortable with others, able to share our brokeness (we creep into week 1 material here!) is an essential aspect here. Jesus came for the broken so let’s leave our hurts at the foot of the cross for the ultimate Healer. I desire to keep my ‘mission’ as His – go and preach the gospel to all the world. Keeping my worship Christ centred, authentic and real (1) and so so passionate!

I pray that when people see me on the worship platform or in the coffee shop, they see a witness for Christ, a bridge to cross over into His divine presence.

My desire – learn more and more to be like Christ, to see Kingdom dreams and mission fulfilled – hallelujah!!

On the 18th November 2009 a group of Physics teachers from South Wales met in Caerleon School to build giant air cannons out of a 200 litres water butt. I organised the event with Cerian Angharad’s help (South Wales Network Coordinator) and the lovely cakes that Ann Dunster (Head of Physics at the school) provided! All the equipment could be found in Wickes (though the first time I went to buy some of these huge water butts in the Cardiff branch, they told me they either got lost, or stolen… Mmm I still have to figure that one out).

These chaps were not very happy when I produced my electric saw after they struggled for 15 minutes to cut their butt with a wood knife, but certainly that’s part of the fun, isn’t it?

This workshop is very useful if you are organising some spectacular activities for your Open Evening. I trialled it in my school (Croesyceiliog School, Cwmbran) and both parents and children loved it. In fact, we filled the giant air cannon with fog from a smoke machine and started shooting at people, who would see these massive smoke circles getting towards them and eventually blasting in their faces! But the fun was not over because we used McFlurry cups and tops to get the children to make their own mini-airzookas. And again the kids loved it, because they could take a little present home that costed nothing to my department, but was good fun for them.

Blasting the cameraman!

The below video shows how you can make you mini-aizooka. All you need to do is going to McDonald and order a McFlurry icecream. The rest you probably have in your house!

But what is the educational value, you might think! Well, there are a number of projects and experiments you pupils could carry out with their mini-airzookas:

1. They could make some observations about what affects the shape, speed and distance travelled by the smoke ring. E.g. by tapping the rubber in different ways, by pulling it and releasing it, etc…

2. They could try to measure the speed of the smoke rings and/or the distance travelled when they tap using more and more force. This activity could generate some very good discussions about reliability of results and method.

3. They could also measure the diameter of the rings at a certain distance from the cannon.

4. A follow on from experiment 2 could be a project were they need to design and build the most reliable tapping mechanism they can. You could even embed this as part of a long term project on electromagnetism, as the children could try to make an eletromagnetic tapper, and so on.

Please, add some more suggestions as comments!

The armed forces remain a mystery to a huge section of UK society. I thought this quite strongly whe

The armed forces remain a mystery to a huge section of UK society. I thought this quite strongly when our bus rattled over the cattle grids at Caerwent training area yesterday.

As us 10 trainee journalists skidded along the rain-soaked roads of the 1,500-acre site, we got held up by marines with tired-looking black and green faces and their guns. Smashed-up warehouse buildings and barbed wire lined the roads while skeletal sheep grazed the tufts of grass around them. It was like entering another world.

We were there on a Senior Command Course to watch marines Non-Comissioned Officers – the forces’ real on-the-ground elite – compete for promotion from corporals to sergeants. We were herded around on patrol, ‘embedded’ with the military to test their skills in keeping us alive. Read on to find out if they managed it.

But we also had to test our skills as journalists – whether we could pick through the miles of jargon and chaos, and of course, darkness and freezing rain, and come out with a usable story on the other side.

The military and the press have always been at odds. Journalists take risks; they don’t fall into line, and the soldiers looking after them have to risk their necks to pull them back, like children, from the side of the road.

But it’s worse being a freelancer. If you’re not embedded with a unit you have the advantage of uncensored copy – but the disadvantage of being blown up or kidnapped at any second, as the case of Javed Yazamy proves. According to the International News Safety Institute, 23-year old Mr Yazamy, a freelancer who contributed to the Canadian Press, was killed in a drive-by shooting in Kandahar City, Afghanistan on 10 March this year. He was in his vehicle at the time. There are countless cases like his.

So the MOD’s line recently, especially since Iraq, has been that they’re in support of the press. “It’s part and parcel of being in a liberal democracy,” Major Andrew Ferguson told us.

“Some journalists, once they’re embedded, decide to go against the military to get the story they want. But the individual will be ostracised – and they won’t be allowed to work with the military again.”

The two of us, he said, must work under the same sense of brotherhood the forces work with themselves. And surprised though we were, once we were on patrol with the marines they treated us like family.

The troop, made up of 38 corporals from all over the UK, took us under their wing and showed us round. The men in their mid-thirties, all with years of operational experience, were spending the 10-day period camped out in one of the deserted buildings. They lived on an hour or so of sleep every 24, and 7000-calorie ration kits which included dehydrated lamb dinners, unbranded milk chocolate and even tiny bottles of tobasco sauce.

It was few days in and they were already exhausted; five had dropped out from an original 43, one due to appendicitis. While they sat around and told us their war stories, the November wind whipped through the broken windows of the old ammunition factory where they still are now.

The time came for orders – their briefing - and they all gathered in a darkening corner of the warehouse where a model of little cardboard boxes and crepe paper had been put up. We sat on a cot bed along the wall and were introduced as “our friends in the media”, which earned us a curt nod from around the room. The report points on the model were given names like Kate Adie and Trevor McDonald, in honour of us.

The mission was to make a reassurance patrol in a fabricated Afghan village down the road, with the intention of setting up future civic projects. Those in charge of the various sections ran through a dazzling array of jargon that we tried furiously to scribble down in the near-dark. They explained parts for us, which we just about understood before they moved on again. By the end of the orders we were fairly confident the three of us would just be following the troop sergeant in single file the whole way.

But, as could be expected, the mission didn’t go to plan. We were at the rear of the troop when those at the front came under fire from insurgents (played by members of the army). We were impressed by how we were looked after. They had us sit completely still while supposed chaos unfolded and gunfire rattled overhead.

Some of our colleagues, playing freelance journalists, were locked in a toilet and told to stay there until things calmed down. They weren’t told what was going on; we were. We had various officers retreat from the front line to calmly reel off what they were doing now; even to make some light conversation. Many of them seemed to enjoy having guests in their midst.

Then a corporal from one section was ‘injured’ by a ‘gunshot wound to the leg’ at around 6pm. He was stable, and so it wouldn’t be newsworthy, we were told. As there was a risk of injuring civillians the troop withdrew back to the base. We came back cold, wet, and without a story.

We got back, debriefed, and the men went off to get some kip while we were driven back to our base. It felt like we’d hardly started; and when some young riflemen we got chatting to back at the base went out to play more insurgents at 11pm, and left us to sleep, we felt inadequate.

Before they left, they were a little suspicious – asking if I was hiding a dictaphone under my Times - but more often they were just incredulous about our work, much as we had been towards theirs. Maybe our relationship with the military is not so much hostile as, well, ignorant.

So we could all do with learning a little more about each other - even if the work’s not to our taste. And it seems the feeling’s mutual. As one 21-year-old rifleman said: “Is that all you do? Read papers all the time? I’d rather be shot at any day.”

Paul Mero

In a press release last night, Sutherland Institute President Paul Mero announced a special event taking place tomorrow night where he will address the relationship between Mormonism and conservative thought. Back-peddling much?

Since Sutherland Institute’s statements following the LDS / Mormon church’s support of SLC’s Fair Workplace and Housing ordinances, Paul Mero has been under some pretty heavy fire from Sutherland’s constituents, opponents and even the LDS / Mormon Church itself.

Jeffrey Holland of the LDS / Mormon Quorum of the Twelve (12) Apostles followed up the Church’s support of the city-wide gay rights ordinances with a call for the rights to be passed state-wide, saying, “Anything good is shareable.”

Unfortunately for Sutherland Institute and Mero, their entire organization and base of power is derived from their stance on gay rights aligning with the Church. So what happens now that the Church has gone ever-so-slightly more liberal?

The tile of Paul Mero’s speech for tomorrow night, Why I am a Conservative: The Relationship Between Mormonism and Conservative Intellectual Thought is pretty telling actually. Now I’m going to at least attempt to be nice and not point at the generally pompous title, which just drips with Mero’s usual “harrumph harrumph” as my family would say, but focus rather on the subject matter for the night. According to Sutherland insiders (who requested not to be named), the speech has a few different goals, but the primary goal is to assuage the mind of those supporters who are now upset with Sutherland Institute’s apparent break from the LDS / Mormon Church. “We have to try to stop the bleeding,” our source said.

As usual in any “sermon” given my Mero, the actual words coming out of his mouth mean little to nothing, just a hidden message coated in smarmy oil, wrapped in a deep voice and disguised in faux intellectual prose. But what is he actually saying? Well Paul really only has 3 ways to go here, he can either admit that Sutherland Institute was wrong and the LDS / Mormon Church has it right and support Fair Workplace and Housing ordinances for the LGBT community; Explain that Sutherland Institute cannot support these issues, but because of their beliefs in their religion they cannot continue to operate publicly; or the most likely of them all, try to convince their flock that they can still be good Mormons even if they’re fighting against the Church itself.

Hmmmmmm, tough decision for Paul I’m sure..
