Although many neutrals might not have enjoyed what was supposed to be the biggest spectacle in World football, I can assure you that Cules and Madridistas around the World were experiencing near heart attacks. For weeks up to the build up to El Clasico, friends had been talking trash to me, emphasizing the point that Barcelona would not only win this game, but absolutely dominate it and predictions like 3-0 were constantly thrown at me. I simply laughed it off. I knew that Barcelona are not the same team they were a year ago, and I also had faith that Madrid would elevate their game. Real Madrid are not Inter Milan. They were not going to bend over pathetically so Barca could.. Well you know.

From the opening kick-off my heart was in my stomach. I was happy with Pellegrini’s starting eleven. I felt the decision to drop Benzema to stick in Marcelo was wise to keep Dani Alves in check. Madrid started off fantastically and had several chances to take the lead. The most notable chance came when Kaka left two defenders for dead, and served it on a platter for Cristiano Ronaldo who missed a criminal chance. But the start was encouraging. The game continued with Madrid having several great chances going astray and most of them due to brilliant individual defending from Carles Puyol and Victor Valdes. Of course, both teams had chances in the second half too, and Zlatan Ibrahimovic came on as a sub to score one of Barca’s few chances. The intentions of this post was  not to recap the game itself so much, but to take a look at the long-term implications of this match.

The Cons:

Although Pellegrini’s starting line-ups have been sound and reasonable this season, it’s his decisions after half-time which have been highly questionable. I won’t touch on his past decisions, but today there were some choices that did not make much sense. Marcelo has been playing fantastic ever since Pellegrini rightfully converted him to a left winger. But today he was our weakest link. Instead of taking off Arbeloa (who played well on the defensive end) for Raul and pushing Marcelo back to LB, I feel that Marcelo should have been subbed for Drenthe who has an incredible amount of pace and flair and would have caused the Barca defence even more problems. We all love the captain and his records, but we already had two strikers with Pipita and Benzema. There was no need for a third.

My other main concern is the lack of quality in the set pieces that are taken. We have players like Pepe, Cristiano and Ramos who are monsters in the air; but Xabi Alonso’s set-pieces have been woeful this season. We haven’t had a consistent set piece specialist since David Beckham and I am worried. Esteban Granero has proven he’s a good dead ball player, but he hasn’t had significant minutes this season.

— But fear not my Madridista brothers. The positives far outweigh the negatives. —

The Pros:

Real Madrid can hold their heads up high. The long-term implications of this game are vast and fruitful. A game that Barca was supposed to dominate, ended up being a game where Real Madrid were the better team and were unlucky to lose. Real Madrid still has the season in their hands. They are finally hitting their stride and will only get better. Although the result of this game could’ve been better, I am positive that as a club, we will gain confidence from this match. Two players really stood out for me today: Kaka and Sergio Ramos. Both players had their best games of the season thus far. Sergio Ramos was a rock at the back, and fantastic going forward. While Kaka tormented the Barca defence on several occasions and looked like he always wanted to be involved. I absolutely can’t wait until Cristiano, Kaka, Benzema, and Higuain hit their stride. It’s going to be orgasmic to watch.

Barcelona have been a shadow of their former selves this season. They’ve only had a couple of truly impressive games, and their last game against Inter really had much to do with Inter’s awful organization and tactics. I don’t like knocking on champions, but the fact that a woeful team like Inter can be champions of Italy is a shame for football. I am confident that Madrid will keep improving and hitting their stride while Barca still have work to do. The league is still in our hands. One more Clasico in the Bernabeu.

El Barça supera clarament l’Inter de Mourinho i Eto’o en un partidàs de tot l’equip malgrat les baixes. El Barça no ha baixat en cap moment la intensitat, però malgrat que ha tingut un parell d’ocasions més per ampliar el marcador, el marcador ja no s’ha mogut.

Il n’y a qu’une seule équipe sur le terrain. Largement dominateur avec environ 60% de possession de balle, le FC Barcelone déroule tranquillement sur son terrain et mène logiquement. This week’s Champions League games will go a long way in deciding the final spots in the knockout stage.  Liverpool need a miracle, namely they need to beat Debrecen and they need some Lyon (who’s already in) to beat Fiorentina.  If Fiorentina wins or draws either of their final two games, Liverpool is out.  The Reds will be without Fernando Torres, who’s still battling a groin injury.  Fellow striker Ryan Babel also picked up an injury in the draw with Manchester City this weekend. Defending champion Barcelona finds themselves in a similar boat.  They need to beat Inter Milan at home to keep their chances at advancing alive.  Barca will likely be without Lionel Messi due to injury.  Several players are also ill with the H1N1 virus.

BARCELONA

Lionel Messi spent the whole of yesterday working with the physios in a bid to be match fit. He will be in the squad, but it has been rumoured that Pep Guardiola will take a last minute decision as to whether to play “La Pulga” or not.

Meanwhile, yeaterday the club was confident of Zlatan’s recovery to face his former team, but he too is not 100% match fit, though Pep may decide to still play him for this crucial match. He is more likely to play than Messi is.

Toure and Abidal will not feature as they are still under the weather with the H1N1 virus.
Marquez is fit and ready to play. This is great news as, without Abidal and Toure, Marquez will be needed to stengthen the defensive line.

INTER

Jose Mourinho’s men are in good form and will be licking their lips at the fact that Barcelona’s two star men may not be starting tonight. Inter top the group and went 5 points clear at the top of Serie A after defeating Bologna.

They are without Davide Sandton who is injured; but Wesley Sneijder is fit to play again, after recovering from an ankle injury.

PREVIEW

Group F is probably the tightest in the Champions League this season. The order of the table can be changed in just a few hours. If Barca lose tonight and Rubin beat Dynamo, then the Blaugranas are out of the competition. They will howver know the outcome of the Rubin-Dynamo clash before their match kicks off. The Nou Camp will have to act as a fortress tonight. Beating Inter is not an easy task, and with the Nerazzurri’s counter-attack style of play, they pray on teams like Barca who like to go forward. Also, being more tactical I assume Mourinho’s men will choose the physical approach, and we all know that Barca isn’t the best team at dealing with that.

Whoever wins this match will be in a better position for qualifying. Barca need 4 points to guarentee qualification and a win here will take them that much closer. A loss is out of the question (unless Rubin lose as well).

“We know what we have to do,” said Barca captain Carles Puyol.

“We have the same ambitions but we know Barca v Inter is a final and we will face the game as such.

“I don’t like the word failure but not to qualify for the next round would be a huge blow.

“We do have crucial players out injured and if they don’t recover, we still have players that can do well.”

When asked about how they will deal with Eto’o, Puyol said: “Eto’o will return to Barca for the first time since leaving the Blaugrana side in the summer.

“We know him very well,” he said. “He can create goal-scoring chances on his own. We cannot give him any spaces, otherwise he can be dangerous.”

Can Torres Lift Liverpool To Victory?

We are ever nearing the end of the round robin phase of this year’s Champions League, and with the 5th matchday on the horizon, the story has yet to be fully written.

In Group E top dogs Lyon will face off against similarly high flying Fiorentina in a battle for top of the heap, while struggling Liverpool will take on Debrecen from Hungary, a team that has secured zero points to date in round robin play. Predictions: Lyon to dump Fiorentina. Liverpool to win… even they cant screw this one up.

The closest of all of the groups, Group F’s teams are separated by no more than two points from top to bottom. This week will see European champion Barcelona face off against Italian champion Inter Milan, in a match that may once again pit the teams traded strikers Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Samuel Eto’o against each other. Dynamo Kiev will play a Rubin Kazan team that has surprised everybody except for the small but mighty Russian squad themselves. Predictions: Inter and Barca to tie. Rubin Kazan to win.

Sevilla has already qualified for the next round of play, though all three other teams have a mathematical chance of joining their Spanish counterpart as the second spot in Group G is up for the taking. Unirea Urziceni will have it toughest as they will go against a top Sevilla team, though due to qualification may have the best draw as they will unlikely face the full fury of the Spanish side. Stuttgart an Rangers will face off in what is sure to be a fierce battle and an excellent match, as both teams will need wins to give them a chance to make it to the Round of 16. Predictions Sevilla and Stuttgart to win.

In Group H it’s not quite all said and done, Arsenal requires one point to ensure qualification into the next round. That being said, they will be facing a Standard Liege team who got out to a quick start in their last meeting (though ultimately in a loosing cause) and who will be looking to capitalize early again in their desperate search for points. Olympiacos, on 6 points will face an AZ Alkmaar team that is looking nothing like the side that took the Dutch Eredivisie by storm last season. Alkmaar is in poor shape with only 2 points but still harbours a slight chance of moving forward in the competition. Prediction: Arsenal and AZ Alkmaar to win.

Another Champions League matchday is upon us, the fifth of this year’s annual competition featuring some of the worlds greatest football clubs and players.  One of the greats who may likely miss the matchday is Barcelona striker Lionel Messi who recently sustained a thigh muscle injury on Saturday night during a 1-1 tie against Athletic Bilbao. Messi helped lead his club to a Champions League title in the 2008-2009 with a league-leading 9 goals.

Goal.com reports that he will more than likely be fit enough to play next Saturday in domestic play for Barcelona’s clash (“El Classico” for all you football snobs) against Real Madrid for tops in La Liga. His participation in Tuesday’s bout against division leading Inter Milan will be a game-time decision.  This is a critical match for Barcelona as they sit third in their group standings, and need the win to take control of the division, which will more than likely secure their spot in the Round of 16.

Barcelona is an ailing team with rumors of defender Rafael Márquez having recently presented symptoms of the H1N1 virus and teammates  Eric Abidal and Toure Yaya having already been diagnosed with the same illness. In other somewhat despairing news for the Catalan faithful,  Messi’s co-striker Zlatan Ibrahimovich did not practice with the club on Sunday as he is also recovering from a thigh strain. Both have combined for a modest 2 goals scored in four Champions League matches this season.  Notice matching stats to go with their matching injuries. Maybe they just want to be twins?

The team may look to them to play against Inter despite their less-than-perfect condition. Regardless, it might be hard to notice them on the pitch given their lack-luster performances so far.  Coach, Josep Guardiola has already stated:

“If players aren’t there… we’ll play with others. You don’t win titles with two or three players”

…Yes, but you can definitely lose titles without two or three players. To add insult to injury (pardon the pun),  Inter’s Jose Murinho announced the return of striker Samuel Eto’o. Save your tears Barca fans, it will definitely be an up-hill battle for the defending champs but they certainly have the depth and talent to pull off an epic win they so desperately need.
