I need your help.

I recently started my show, Hubie Sounds, on NSB Radio and I’m pleased to say it’s been going well so far

However, my jingles are shit. I need new jingles. I’ve started working on new ones, but what I need from you is this…

Firstly I need recordings of you, the interweb massive, saying the following sound bites…

1. “Hubie Sounds on NSB Radio”

2. “www.nsbradio.co.uk”

And secondly, I need a new slogan! I’m appealing to you all to conjure up a new slogan for Hubie Sounds.

So, if you’d like to help me out and, more importantly, be immortalised on worldwide radio, here’s what you need to do…

Record yourself, your friends, your dog, whatever, saying the above soundbites and send them to me. You can sing them, rap them, shout them, burp them, whatever you like, as long as the recordings are clean (as little background noise as possible) and high quality (preferably wav/aiff or 320k mp3).

Then send them to me via email. My email addy can be found on this website’s contact page

Ideally, I need them done as soon as possible, but if you could send them to me before the new year that would be great

If you’re unfamiliar with my show, or you need some inspiration, feel free to check out my previous shows, as well as the rest of the NSB Radio shows, in the NSB Radio archives HERE

I hope some of you can help me out, so thanks in advance to those of you who do. I look forward to hearing your contributions

Hubie x

Adam Lambert from American Idol appeared on ‘The Today Show” where he was interviewed about his performance at the AMAs. I was struck by the final statement in this clip, “I’m not a babysitter, I’m a performer.” While this is true, it still bothered me. I am not completely sure why. Maybe as a youth pastor who knows that teenagers that watch this performance will be influenced by it, and in a negative way in my opinion, I am just offended by his attitude. Do I expect to much of our stars to want them to ‘own up’ for their mistakes? I feel like the attitude that Adam has taken on is the attitude of a lot performers, actors, and artists today. They don’t care what people perceive they just want their message out there, and when people take offense to their message they get all offended. Should we expect our ‘entertainers’ to have a higher standard? Or do we as mentors, and parents need to open a dialogue with our kids and teens about what the culture is throwing at them?

What stance do you take?

So I was reading Hebrews this morning. Specifically chapter 8. I came to verse 7 and it said this in the NASB, “For if the first covenant had been faultless there would have been no occasion sought for a second.” I scratched my head and said “what” in my head. I was baffled, I’ve read this before, but for some reason it never stood out to me. I began to ask myself the question, why were there faults in the first covenant? I am by no means an Old Testament scholar, by any stretch of the imagination, so this question may be answered. However, to me there seem to be only two conclusions. The first covenant was created imperfect by God so it would be over-shadowed by the new covenant that was perfect. Or, the old covenant was made imperfect by the Hebrew people who continuously broke the covenant. Perhaps some of your OT scholars can help me out, or even the casual theologian at that.

What makes the old covenant imperfect?

p.s. are pastors allowed to ask questions like this?

So what’s your favorite Thanksgiving memories?

Mine: I loved watching March of the Wooden Soldiers (also known as Babes in Toyland) every year, being together as big family, of course the food, watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade… but one I will never forget – being in the Macy’s parade!

The year was 1997. Some friends worked for Macy’s and they allowed employees to be a part along with one guest. So My wife & I along with our friends Erik & Jeanine headed in to take our place. We were chosen to be float handlers on the newly returned Fireman Harold float. It was such a blast. The only thing was, this was they year of the crazy winds. Every intersection we had to lower the float so it wouldn’t get taken by the wind. One float didn’t fair too well that year, the Cat in the Hat, which hit a lamppost injuring several people. Aside from that unfortunate event, it was so cool to be a part of it and the experience of a lifetime. I view the parade every year since in a whole new way.

Post your fond Thanksgiving memories & traditions below. Who knows, maybe you’ll discover a something new you’ll want to bring into your traditions!

Well Amy and I have been living in Western,WA for a little over two months now. We are feeling settled in and at home here. Still getting used to the wind and rain that they seem to have in excess here, but we’re coping. The big thing for me has been the church family. We are still getting to know them for sure, and because of a camp, and me being sick I was gone for two weekends. However, this family has embraced us, and anyone else who walks in the doors, more fully than any church that I have been apart of. We have had families in the churches in the past welcome and accept us, but it feels to me that this entire church family has welcomed us the fullest. What strikes me about this church is they seem to be trying to live out the church in Acts 2, where they are giving up items to others in needs, be it coats, clothes, money, or food. Since I’ve been sick I’ve had more people offer to bring over dinner than I can count, and I’ve taken up a few. It’s been great. I think we are far from knowing everyone at our church, but we are definitely beginning to feel at home here.

When you are browsing the web you are most likely searching for something like a product, service, info, or may be just for fun.Suppose you have found what your are looking for, or probably something similar. What would you do next?
Most probably you will start a decision process.
Would you take what you are viewing on that web page, whether it is a product or service or just an informational article for granted, or would you go for a little research?

Chances are that you Google again the product/service/article to get a feedback about it, especially if your credit card is on the stake. You check the forums to see what people are saying about this stuff, and may be you would join to discuss the subject. In short once you have found your item, you will enter another circle of indecision (unless you are 100% sure of what you are doing of course).

Have you ever thought, what would it be if there are some people around to ask them about that item, or may be just read their feedback?

This is a real issue! It is wonderful to feel that you are not alone!
It is just amazing to get the sense that the web is alive and there is someone over there with whom you can instantly share your opinion and experience .

Sacha is meant to offer you all that.

So a lot of you may know I’ve been out of commission for about a week now. So I am just now getting around to sharing about Quest. This was my first official district youth event, which I was (and am) very excited about. I have a feeling I am going to love these events in the future. The large hordes of teens, lots of other youth pastors to share stories and get advice from. Erik w/ a K being goofy, and the list goes on. This was also the first event that I actually drove my students too. I took the churches 15 passenger van with 7 students and luggage. It was a nice 2 hours journey (with bad traffic) there, but only 1 15 minutes back. Anyway, I had 5 guys (1 of whom I kinda knew) and 2 girls (and no female leader) thankfully my good friend Dan Arnold over at Mercer Creek had one of their female leaders take them in! I didn’t ignore, them I tried to connect with them whenever I could, mainly meals. The cool thing about the guys is they are all on the same football team, so they could entertain each other mostly, but I still ate with them as well. Quest was very well done, a great opening night where Josh Mann (aka @joshpmann) shared three stories that made one major point about our relationship, or lack there of with God. I thought Josh did a great job all weekend long, despite being a little under the weather.

The programming was also great, good opening games and contests, including a consume contest on Halloween! Which one of the students I brought won, as a blind Referee! Anyway, I think my favorite part about the camp where the seminars. On Saturday before and after lunch there were 45 minute seminars that students could choose which one to go to and there were plenty to choose from. I went to the ‘Dear God’ seminar with Josh Mann, Erik “w/ a K” Williams, and “Full on” Dave Underwood. The second seminar I chose was ‘Chocolate Lovers’ by Jonathan Coats, also a winner! After the seminars was free time, and me not getting a lot of sleep on friday and also being still a little sick, took a long nap.

Sunday brought another high-light, which was a little scary as well. At the end of the last general session they told leaders to spread out and had students find you, so that you could give them a blessing. This was hard but awesome for me, since I am new to my church and barely know my students. I however, just let God speak through me and the students seemed to be very blessed by what God said through me. Even a student named Angelica from my old church in Yakima came up to me and after I blessed her gave me a hug, that was a definite high-light to me. We were already packed and cleaned up, and loaded up and headed out. It was a great weekend. Unfortunalty, my sickness caught back up with me and knocked me out for a week. So I have a week or so of catch up to do, which is ok, thanks Alliance Youth of the PNW!

Today I was able to attend our local Steamboat Springs Rotary Meeting as a guest of a fellow staff member who is an active Rotarian. Having just led a team of four other Rotarians to Chile, on a five week leadership exchange, she was sharing about her trip with the rest of the club. It was really neat to see how many rotary clubs exist in the country of Chile alone. It was also rewarding to hear about the impact rotary clubs across the globe has had on supporting the eradication of polio worldwide.

Rotary International is an excellent way for people of all ages to take on a unique role in their own communities and make an impact on communities world wide. In addition to Rotary Club International, they all have two addition sister programs, Rotoract and Interact. Rotoract is for adults 18-30 and Interact is for youth ages 15-18. Rotary Club International is just one of the many ways to get involved her in Steamboat Springs.

For one of my classes I am reading a book called Apologetics for a New Generation. I just finished reading a chapter about the subconscious themes that seem to run in each culture and how they relate to the biblical narrative. The author explains how Sleeping Beauty fits into this concept. He points out these elements: Witch = the devil, princess = humanity, king = God the Father, prince = savior (Christ). It was interesting to replay the story in my head (with Disney animation of course) and see how it came together.

As I was reading the story I was struck by the possibility of finding the Biblical Narrative buried in the myth and lore of World of Warcraft (WoW). Some of you are probably thinking, sure Matt you would do that, your obsessed. The reality is that because the Biblical Narrative is hidden in the myth of WoW it can be used as a tool to reach those who are disillusioned by the Church that also play the game. I was talking to my friend John Hinton last night. We were joking about gaming, and of course I brought WoW into it. I started talking about how close a lot of people in my guild are. I was explaining that it’s almost church like (probably more cult-like, but you get the idea) we know about each others wives, kids, dogs, jobs, lack of job, sickness, ups and downs. When people take time off from the game we miss them. It’s like a church family. At one point John said something to me, “Be the Missionary the need.” My guild knows I’m a pastor, and are often baffled that I’m not condemning that I am ok with beer and cigars, and that their harsh language and joking doesn’t bother me, or make me all preachy.

Anyway, as I read this chapter I began to wonder, how can I use the Lore of WoW to reach my guild? It is a question I am sure I will struggle with. God, has no doubt, placed the burden of these men and women, and their families on my heart. People that play games like this never step into a church or a place that has anything to do with church except for their interaction with Christians in the game. So I call you Christian that play these games: “Be the Missionary they need.” Be the friend, the family, the ear, the love they need. Be the Jesus they unknowingly seek. And as we do this together perhaps we will find a truly impactful way to change the lives of these gamers. I don’t know how to do it except be me when I play with them, to be compassionate, and patient, and jovial through it all, even when I get annoyed at something. If you have any ideas, please leave them in the comments section.

Does your company do a good job of listening to its customers? Give a specific example of how listening resulted in improved service quality to your customers?

Reliability is the ability of the company to perform the promised services dependably and accurately. On a 10-point scale, where 1 is unreliable and 10 perfectly reliable, where would you place your company and why?

How well does your company perform the “service basics”—that is, knowing and responding to the fundamental service expectations in your industry?

How effectively does your company manage the service design elements or systems, people, and the physical environment? Provide an example of how a lack of planning in one of these areas resulted in a “fail point” during a customer encounter.

Service recovery refers to how effectively companies respond to service failures. Cite an example of when a service failure occurred in your company and how it was handled.

Teamwork is an important dynamic in sustaining service workers’ motivation to serve and in minimizing service-performance shortfalls. Rate your company on its ability to foster teamwork on a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 indicates the absence of teamwork and 10 indicates maximum teamwork. How would you improve teamwork if you rated your company low on this attribute?

Internal service is crucial to service improvement, as customer satisfaction often mirrors employee satisfaction. To what extent does your company assess internal service quality (i.e., asking employees about the adequacy of systems to support the service, how the systems interact and serve one another, and where service failures are occurring)? Give examples of how internal service might be measured in your company.

There was a time when people weren’t so interested in transparency, when the web was principally used to send email and the idea of keeping interior monologues interior was key. That was before blogs.

Blogs have become useful in lots of ways, especially to photographers.

Blogs are useful because they can help prospective clients see what your interior monologue looks (or even sounds) like. You can use your blog as a place to put your photographic experiments. Sometimes projects have happy accidents and those are useful fodder. Sometimes, things go terribly awry. You have to be a good judge of what’s “overshare” and what’s interesting. Putting these things on your blog gives you a comfortable place to “talk it out” about the things that you experienced. An added bonus of creating a blog is having a place to come back to see what you were thinking previously.

Photographers have lately needed to become experts in all sorts of fields rather than just making images. Many have had to learn how to bid for projects, how to understand search engine optimization, and finally create and update websites. Having a blog is a way to cut down on website content changes and keep your work fresh. Putting up work from recently completed jobs gives prospective clients a chance to see your range. It allows you to showcase whatever newest image (or set of images) you’ve made that strikes your fancy.

Value-added extras, like behind-the-scenes videos and photos, can also fit well on your blog. Often, people like to see what went into making a particular image as much as they like seeing the actual image itself. More than that, some ADs are interested in knowing more about who you are, so keeping your personal projects on your blog can humanize you. Telling stories about your images aids in this. It helps clients gauge how you might integrate with the creative teams they’ve assembled.

What’s important is to keep a regular posting schedule because in the digital world, attention spans are fickle. A blog that’s a hit today can be a dud tomorrow because of a lack of posts. It might be good to keep the following things in mind as you enter the world of blogging:

(1) As a photographer, it’s always good to put a photograph in each of your posts.
(2) Post on a regular schedule so that your readers can know when to expect new content.
(3) Enjoy yourself! Your blog should be about your work, but it’s about you, too.

To avoid putting pins though her clothes, Basil Haines made Helen a set of earrings with Rotary wheels – very attractive . Good meeting with lots of banter and it was also a pleasure to present the Citation to David last years President. Plenty of questions largely around Polio and in particular thanks for Life – do we have material for upper schools? I will need to find out.

by Steven Coraor
Ghosts, goblins, ghouls, and…yogis? This Halloween, the Himalayan Institute opened its doors and became the Haunted Walke Asylum thanks to Honesdale High School’s Interact Club. More than 300 people came out to the Himalayan Institute campus on Sunday, October 25th, to experience the event and support Interact’s mentoring program for elementary school children in need. This raised nearly $2000 for the cause and encouraged the club to repeat the performance on Sunday, November 1st.

In addition to raising money for a great cause, the true success story of the Haunted Walke Asylum is the community involvement that it has rallied. The Interact Club, which is affiliated with Honesdale Rotary, brought together about 45 students and a ton of enthusiasm to transform the usually tranquil Himalayan Institute campus on Bethany Turnpike into an infested madhouse. “We had searched for a place to have the event and the Himalayan Institute offered its grounds,” said Bethany Reynolds, Honesdale High School Interact member, “with the barn and the campus surroundings, it was just perfect—we really appreciated their support.”

A number of local businesses in Honesdale generously donated to the event including Apple Day Spa & Salon, Wayne Memorial Hospital, Rent-E-Quip, and Bold Gold Media Group, Woodloch, Jeff George Design, The Dime Bank, Wayne Bank, Gillow Construction to name a few.

Many individuals from around the area contributed their talent and time to make the Walke a success. Breathing life into the infamous Dr. Walke was local Gastroenterologist, Dr. David Reynolds, M.D. Graeme McDonnell, a former lighting shop owner from New York City now living in Honesdale, supplied an unbelievable amount of lighting and time. So much, in fact, that every amp at the Institute was used and a neighbor generously allowed the club use of his porch for spotlights in the front field. Chris Peroni, a screen writer, film director and owner the Old Wayne Curio Shop now living in Bethany, brought training and theatrics to the production—the kids loved it. About a dozen residents at the Himalayan Institute pitched in as well, becoming zombies, directing traffic, or helping to string more than a mile of electrical cable throughout the campus.

Brian Fulp, past president of Honesdale Rotary and one of the coordinators of the Walke, has lived at the Himalayan Institute with his family for over 10 years. He was amazed at the outpouring of community support around the Haunted Walke Asylum and appreciative of the connection it created between the Himalayan Institute and the community of Honesdale. “I can’t remember the last time we had 300 residents of Wayne County visit the Institute for a community fundraising event, it was great!” says Fulp. “It really shows how far the Institute has come over the last few years in creating a link with the community.”

It is the Himalayan Institute’s goal to continue building that link. Ever since the opening of HI’s Yoga Café on Main Street in Honesdale, a growing connection with the greater community has developed. Many participants at the Walke said that they enjoy the Café, take Yoga classes there, and appreciate the other activities it offers like dancing and open mic performances. Hosting the Haunted Walke Asylum both supports a great local cause and shares Himalayan Institute’s main campus with the community: something HI looks forward to doing more of in the future.

If you’d like to experience the insanity for yourself, please come this Sunday, November 1st, between 6-9 p.m. to the Himalayan Institute’s main campus on Rt. 670 in Bethany. Also, if you’d like more information about how to get involved with future Interact or Honesdale Rotary projects, visit www.honesdalerotary.com or call Brian Fulp at 570-647-5548.

More than 300 people turned out for Honesdale High School’s Interact Club’s Haunted Walke Asylum on Sunday, October 25th. So many that the club will put on a repeat performance on Sunday, November 1st.

“We go to a lot of haunted hayrides, forests, walks, you name it. This one was pretty good—we liked it a lot,” said Tanya Leet of Starrucca Borough in northern Wayne County.

The Haunted Walke—named after the mad scientist, Franklin Walke, whose experiments go awry—takes place at the Himalayan Institute’s main campus on Route 670 in Bethany. Dr. Walke— played by a real local doctor—was called “amazing” by more than one visitor.

About 45 students take part in the event, which also includes a children’s storytelling area and a heated tent with home-baked goodies.

Donations of $5 are suggested at the ticket booth. The event supports Interact’s mentoring program for at-risk elementary school children.

For more information, visit www.walkeasylum.com. The November 1st event runs from 6pm – 10pm. In the event of heavy rain, it will be cancelled. The last tour is at 9pm.

I’ve been reading this book called Toward a Prophetic Youth Ministry. It’s main goal is

I’ve been reading this book called Toward a Prophetic Youth Ministry. It’s main goal is to inform an inner-city youth ministry. I am not in the inner-city, however I found many helpful tips and ideas in the book. The last chapter I read was on the development of a teenager through adolescents. I had the basics of this knowledge before reading this chapter. I have a greater understanding now. As Fernando Arzola Jr. (the author) discussed the brain development, physical development, the involvement of emotions and hormones in all of this, I began to wonder. How much can we as youth leaders and parents do to really correct behavior that is not their conscience fault. It was connects with something I was talking to my Sr. Pastor about yesterday. Sure we can give them a set of rules to follow, but they are doing it to make either us happy, or Mommy and Daddy happy. What happens when they leave the home or our ministry? Do our guide-lines stick? Or do they toss them out the window and act however they want?

Most people who study adolescent development and behavior know that when they make bad decisions (especially in Jr. high) they really don’t know why they did it, it was probably more of an instinct than anything. How do we go about teaching correct etiquette and behavior when they can’t make a truly conscience and informed decision until their 20’s? (some believe that now full brain development doesn’t finish until about 30). As the adolescent stage of life gets longer as time goes on, will it be easier or harder for youth leaders and parents to do their jobs? Or will it become harder? The task is over-whelming without a doubt.

What are your thoughts on adolescent development and our response and youth workers and parents?

As I look at the title I realize for this post it has a double meaning, but we’ll get to that.

Last night at Revolution (MVACyouth), we did a few more rounds of sardines and the students seem to really be catching on to how to play the game. The story last night was about the fall, it was entitled Disruption. The students where not as open last night as they were the week before, but there were still some good thoughts shared. I decided that I would share more of my insights, not as the authority on the subject, but more as an equal as someone who is discovering with them. It helped the students to see that I am taking the journey with them.

The tough part of the night really came at the end. One student who has some mental ailment, started to act out a little, and cause a . . . disruption. Thankfully it was in the end, and I think that a lot of students missed what was happening. Perhaps having the room dim and lit by candles helped to defuse the intensity of the situation. All that to say, please pray for Amy and I as we decide how to proceed with this student, he is on the older side of our ministry, and should really be in a young adults group, so pray.
