PROMOTING INTER-CLUB MEETINGS An inter-club meeting is a meeting or activity staged by two or more K

PROMOTING INTER-CLUB MEETINGS
An inter-club meeting is a meeting or activity staged by two or more Kiwanis family clubs including K-Kids, Builders Club, Key Club, Circle K Club, Kiwanis and Aktion Club. The definition of an inter-club was expanded from simply attending another Kiwanis club meeting to include attending the projects, activities and social events of another K-Family club. The broadened definition promotes more opportunities for fellowship, education and encourages greater interaction between Kiwanis clubs and our Service Leadership Programs.

Inter-clubbing is a means of supporting Kiwanis’ fifth Object, which is, “To provide through this club, a practical means to form enduring friendships, to render altruistic service, and to build a better community.”

A wider scope of Kiwanis involvement can be achieved by arranging visits between clubs in the same town, division, and district, as well as inter-district get-togethers.

The expanded definition of an inter-club minimizes the monotonous routine of simply going to another meeting and allows clubs to interact socially, apart from the regularly scheduled meetings, in community fundraisers, service projects and social programs.
Careful planning at division council meetings and advance notification of projects and activities will lead to more inter-clubbing by more members.

An interclub is recorded by the Secretary on the monthly report when 4 members of our club attend another club’s function. So, it is important to let them know who attends. Each member will also receive a makeup credit for any missed meeting that they may have attended.

Promotion ideas: Sign-up sheet, email, Facebook, Twitter, calendar. Also, the best way is talking it up at meetings.

NOTE: Always give the other club enough notice to make sure they have enough reservations at their meeting location.

So there has been some concern among the crew about how we placed in the Lake Erie Interclub overall

So there has been some concern among the crew about how we placed in the Lake Erie Interclub overalls. It is true that last year we placed 27th out of 65 boats in overalls for the 5-race series, while this year we finished 39th of 56. First of all, you can’t really compare one year to the next — different winds, seas, competition, etc. But let’s look at another metric.

Let’s look at some (surely not all) of the boats we DID correct over in the fleet in various races (not counting the boats in our own fleet).

Race 1 (Erie Triangle — light and dying air): Pressure Vessel (Borsaw), Messenger (Beneteau 40), Quixotic (J-120), Dreamer (Alden Ketch 55)

Race 2 (Erie-to-Dover — light to moderate, building toward the end): Masego (Beneteau 36.7), Ritual (J-35), Raven (Schock 35), Damn Yankee (Judel-Vrolijk 43), Poison Ivy (J-34), Magic (J-35), Team Rush (Hobie 33), Lanada II (Beneteau 36.7)

Race 3 (Dover Triangle — strong and gusty winds): Poison Ivy (J-34), Strider (Scorpio 35), Lanada II (Beneteau 36.7), Plumb Bob (Beneteau 36.7), Amazing Grace IV (Beneteau 36.7)

Race 4 (Erie-to-Colborne — moderate, building to heavy air): Hot Pursuit (Andrews 30), Lake Shark (J-160 SD)

Race 5 (Colborne-to-Abino — extremely light air): Aries (Borsaw), Taller Cotton (Cal 33), Pressure Vessel (Borsaw), Nyanza (Hinckley SW42), Dreamer (Alden Ketch 55)

When you look at it that way, it looks pretty good, I think. Those are good boats and good sailors.

Overall Results: 4th in E Fleet (out of 12), 39th in full fleet (out of 56)

First, thanks and credit for a good series go to our intrepid crew: Judy Tucci (foredeck, alternate spinnaker trimmer), Ken McCurdy (main trimmer, spinnaker trimmer), Kim Yamma (jib trimmer, alternate main trimmer, alternate driver), Don Behm (jib trimmer, spinnaker halyard and tack, utility player). Everybody worked together through five days of racing, and five nights in various ports.

Race 1: Erie Triangle. 6th in E Fleet, 42nd Overall.

We started in about 8-10 knots of breeze with some residual chop from the night before. The first leg went OK. Shortly after rounding the weather mark we deployed the chute and the wind died. The lake flattened and the race turned into a “shake n bake.” We struggled to get to the next mark. The mark was sitting in a hole and almost everyone had trouble rounding, including us. It took a long time, but we rounded a little better than some. Then a little bit of a breeze came up and we were able to finish on a downwind run with the chute. It was a long hot day.

Race 2: Erie to Dover. 6th in E Fleet. 26th Overall.

The race started in the Erie bay with the normal, but weak, offshore. We had our best start of this race — ever. 10 seconds before the start we were on a reach about 12 seconds from the line. We popped the chute with 10 seconds to go and were at the line sailing fast at the start. Because the winds were light we were able to carry the chute all the way into and through the channel at 60 degrees. We were the fourth boat to the channel behind Andicapp, Venture and Strider. In the channel we passed Strider (something we would not do many times during the series) and we were the 3rd boat out of the channel on the way to Dover. This is our best start EVER! After that we gybed downwind on the long leg to Long Point in moderate winds. We gave away a few positions on that leg, then we rounded the point. The wind picked up as it frequently does in Long Point Bay and we tacked downwind the final 15 miles to Dover. By the end of the leg the wind had piped up to 15-25 but we were able to hold the chute til the finish. Overall, not a bad race. We rafted off a tug just south of the yacht club for the night.

Race 3: Dover Triangle. 5th in Fleet. 35th overall.

It’s pretty typical to see strong winds for this race. We started the race in 10-20 knot winds. We held our own as well as we could in the long upwind leg in breezy conditions and 2-4 footers. We stayed along the shore, tacking to stay inland as much as possible. This is the same route that all the locals took, so we felt fairly confident that it was the place to be on the course. By the time we got to the weather mark the winds were 15-25. Most boats stayed with white sails on the 2nd leg and so did we. On this leg we caught up with and passed Habenero. That moved us into 5th. About halfway through the leg we met up with a freighter. Several boats crossed in front of it, but it didn’t look to me like we were going to cross it, so we decided to duck it. As we got closer we noticed something odd: it had an anchor chain! Because of the wind and the waves breaking on the bow it had looked like it was moving from the distance. We ducked an anchored freighter! Boy did we feel stupid (we heard afterwards that maybe four or five others also ducked it). Well, safety first (and it didn’t hurt us too badly to duck). After rounding the final mark we stuck with white sails, though we probably should have reefed the main and threw up the chute. We were able to keep our time on the boats behind us, and ended 5th. That night we rafted off Venture (who was rafted off our old tug).

Race 4: Dover to Colborne. 6th in E Fleet. 41st Overall.

Some days the bear gets you… And this was one hairy, mean bear! First, this was not your typical Colborne race. Normally there is no wind at the start and we end up motoring 10 or 15 miles before we finally start the race. This time there was wind at the start with the prospect of the wind building through the race all the way to the finish — and that’s exactly what happened. The race started badly for us and got worse. Right before the start, a couple boats next to us tangled and there was much shouting. I got distracted watching them, and we went over the line before the start. We were called and we dipped back below the line and restarted. Then we proceeded to pop the chute and tack downwind. The wind was dead down, so we started giving away positions. After about an hour we decided to follow some of the smarter boats in to shore. This is frequently a winning move on this race, and since we were following smart boats (Graffiti, Lake Shark, Powderhound, etc) we thought it was a good percentage. Well, the winds went VERY light toward shore, and even though the water was flatter, our speed dropped from 6’s and 7’s to 4’s and 5’s. By the time we came back out to the rhumb line we were pretty much at the back of the fleet. Combine that with some bad gybes (we wrapped the chute on the forestay at least three or four times) and we had some tough going. Then the winds built to 15-25 and waves built to 4-6 footers. We had some trouble carrying the chute, but were able to carry it until one very big round-up about a mile and a half from the gybing gate. We got the chute down, and even struggled with our gybes under white sails all the way to the finish (and even after the finish on the way into Sugarloaf marina). Overall, it’s a race we’d rather forget. That night we ate at the San Marcos Restaurant in Port Colborne and had a nice walk along the Welland Canal afterward.

Race 5: Port Colborne to Point Abino. 3rd in Fleet. 32nd Overall.

No wind at the start, so we motored almost all the way to Abino before starting. Markset set a triangle course. The first leg was a 3-mile upwind leg. The winds were a light 3-6 knots and there was at least 2-feet of chop left from yesterday, so it was a long upwind leg. We had a decent start and we did our best to sail the compass and stay on the favored tacks. At one point we crossed tacks with Strider (they were on starboard, so we crossed right behind their stern), but they had about two minutes on us by the time we got to the weather mark. We rounded and popped the chute. We sailed to get under control, then gybed. During the gybe the chute wrapped and tore right in the middle, but in those light winds (still just 3-5 knots) we just sailed on. We sailed the hottest angles we could and gybed downwind. The course was shortened so the second leg turned into the final leg, a 5-mile downwind run. We crossed the line third in our fleet, but we were not able to correct over the other two boats (Strider and Knot So Fast), so ended third — but that won us our first Interclub flag in a long time. All-in-all, a good day, despite the tear in the chute.

OVERALL: Well, thanks Venture and Andicapp not sailing the last two races we were actually in the hunt for third in the fleet overall. We needed a 3rd on the last race to tie, and we needed a 2nd to have third to ourselves. Well, we got our 3rd in the race and that tied us with Oud @ Sea with 26 points. Their best finish was a 2nd and ours was 3rd, so the tie breaker went to them. Still, we had a good series. We learned a lot, we sailed fast (in the Dover triangle the speedo said our max speed was 10.2), no was hurt, and the boat held up well.

DELIVERY: Dave Hyland picked up Judy, so we had four going home. We took a shower at the Buffalo Yacht Club summer station, then we left for home at about 6:30PM. We motor-sailed the whole way home with Otto (the auto-tiller) driving. We had a couple issues with a Crazy Otto or two, but the trip home was fast. We arrived in bay by 5:30AM.

He

What do golfers love to do besides play golf? Well, ask those who attended the 62nd PAL INTERCLUB TOURNAMENT in Davao City, Mindanao, Philippines and you might need 10 pages to make up a list.

First of all the PAL INTERCLUB is Philippine’s National Team Golf Championship featuring the nation’s top amateur golfers from many local clubs. Several years ago, international teams were invited to participate. During the last week of February, 2009, more than 5000 golfers, companions, escorts, (ahem!) and alternate players crowded the city of Davao, known for its durian, pomelo, and other fruits. Rancho Palos Verdes and Apo Golf and Country Club were kept busy and on their toes from dusk to dawn to accommodate this fabulous tournament.

….Vancouver was well represented

The city of Vancouver is well represented at the INTERCLUB Tournament. EZPAR GOLF YVR is one of them. It is no secret that avid golfers in the city wanting to get the most out of the season belong to more than one club. Miles Nerona, Rey Fortaleza, and Ed Morcilla are among the many who play with several clubs in BC. Chang Lim and Hee Jeaw Chang, regulars with the Thursday Birdie Hunters group bolstered EZPAR’s entries in the Seniors Division this year. (Note: there is no such team as EZPAR BREAKERS. For some reason the tournament schedule confused the EZPAR golfers and the PAR Breakers when the 2nd day tournament schedule was faxed to the hotels listing the EZPAR Breakers. Hence, thereinafter, EZPAR GOLF VANCOUVER was christened EZPAR GOLF YVR.)

…..first time in the Philippines

Being their first visit to the nation, our two friends who were originally from Indonesia were quick to note similarities and differences between the two countries (Philippines and Indonesia). This brings us to the answers to the original question: what golfers love to do!

They love to wander around and experience the country and its cultural idiosyncrasies, amenities, and social life. “The workers are so dedicated to their jobs; they really like to please customers!” exclaimed Hee Jeaw who appreciated his many encounters with local merchants. Indeed Filipino hospitality and dedication to duty were aglow everywhere we went.

….fabulous accommodations

At Royal Mandaya Hotel where the team stayed, Joy Nidea-Vargas and Ella and their staff made sure the team received top notch services. Flor and Giselle were gracious and attentive at the restaurant. There was nightly entertainment at the Lounge with singers and pianist hardly ever resting throughout the evening (unlike with labor/unionized entertainers in Vancouver who make sure they took their 15 minute break every 15 minutes!).

….the Interclub Golf Committee

At the Interclub, Bheng, Tina, and Janice were ohhhh-soooo-busyyyy throughout the 2-week affair to the delight of Atty. Domeng Duerme and Buddy Ressureccion whose work and dedication to the Interclub have been major contributions to its success.

….and the food…TALK ABOUT FOOD!

Breakfast at Royal Mandaya was just delightful. The buffet selection is revamped daily. Both Chang’s enjoyed the “danggit” – the crispy fish delight, boneless bangus, the daily serving of veggies, and of course the tropical fruits’ table. Nanay Bebeng served up a long buffet table with great selection of native dishes and dessert that hardly breaks the budget. We missed Jack’s Ridge this time around but everyone who comes to visit Davao city has this on their itinerary.

…….finally, What about Golf?

Well, international teams are probably light years away from competing with the likes of Canlubang, Luisita, Wack-Wack, or even the newcomer TCC (The Country Club). The Sugar Barons’ total scoring point of 551 for the Men’s Championship 72 holes translates to “impossibility” for any international team anywhere to replicate.

Those of us from La-La lands come to have fun. Minimizing “pick-ups” more than scoring points is our objective. In the Senior Division, it means preventing a triple bogie on any hole. Rey David, Oscar Trinidad, and Paul Galon, know too well what that feels like.

The clean up team of Lim, Chang, Taguiam, & Mendoza for EZPAR scored the most points for the club. Disqualification of Trinidad for improper scoring pulled down the club from 7th position on the 1st day to….oh, who cares!

…..whatabout……ENTERTAINMENT?

Well….”eat your heart out” – those of you who did not make it this time. No need to elaborate here except perhaps to use the word….”pampered heavenly”. There is only one advice to those of you who wish to de-stress, forget the blues, and get re-invigorated: BOOK EARLY for Cagayan de Oro for the last two week in February, 2010!

Just ask Jimmy Mallari of Las Vegas or Miles Nerona of Vancouver….they will tell you why!

GO AHEAD AND COMMENT BELOW!

Committee: I should like to thank the members of the HPS Committee for their continued commitment and input.

Bernard Seymour-Hall, our Treasurer, will be Vice Chair in 2009, which means that he will be our new Chairman in 2010. Irmel Dunaiski organizes the Audio-visual Section, and Paddy Howes is the Secretary and handles all the Outings. Steve Crane is our Computer and Digital expert, while Michele has been handling slide entries and tea, Marisa has been organizing print entries and JJ van Heerden has been our Technical Expert, as well as being the sponsor of our prizes from Picture Works, Stellenboch.

I am pleased to announce that Eric Palmer has agreed to serve on the committee – he is well known for his Photoshop expertise and teaching abilities, and brings young blood, as well as young ideas, to the Club.

I would also like to mention that Eric has won the Getaway Gallery’s First Prize for 2008 with his image of ‘Simonsberg’ … Congratulations, Eric!

Matters Financial: Bernard reports that we have a healthy balance in our account – this will be needed in the case of eventual upgrading of our equipment and for use when next we have to host Interclub.

Subscriptions for 2009 will remain the same as in 2008 ie. R220 per person with a discount of R20 if paid before 1st April; R110 per person who are country members or students, with a discount of R10 if paid before 1st April. Bank details can be found elsewhere on this site.

Tea and biscuits will be a minimum donation of R4,00 from next year.

Jannie, our car guard, is paid by us, and is reliable and helpful. Thanks to Paddy for organizing a Christmas hamper for him.

Outings: This year we enjoyed a number of successful outings, including one to Skurweberg (60kms from Sutherland) in winter. Paddy has quite a few ideas up her sleeve, including a weekend stay in Matjiesfontein. Other outings being planned are a visit to a wine farm, Gansbaai, McGregor and Camps Bay. Outings are a wonderful way of getting out to do photography in the safety of a group, as well as getting to know other members of the club.

Audio-Visual: Our AV department, steered by Irmel, has been active this year. As well as making our own presentations, we were asked to make an AV using 35 or so of Paddy’s scanned slides of the Richterveld, set to music of our own choice. The results were amazing in their diversity. 2009’s ‘set subject’ will be ‘Living from the Sea’.

Competitions: The list of competition subjects can be found elsewhere on this site. Our January subject ‘Silhouette’ will be judged by a lecturer from the Stellenbosch Academy.

Evaluations: A new twist will be introduced to the evaluation evenings next year. Hermanus Photographic Society has accepted our invitation to visit us on 11th February, when we will hold a combined Evaluation Evening. Please note this date in your diary. We wait to hear from Tafelberg of their decision to join us too.

Slides: From next year slides are to be entered together with digital images under ‘projected images’. Bring your slides to Steve on the Wednesday evening so that he can add them to his list, and then show them on the slide projector, as normal.

Digital: Getting your digital images in to Steve by Tuesday 6pm is very important. Please follow the guidelines as set out elsewhere on this site.

Talks: It is not always easy to find speakers who are willing to travel all the way out to Somerset West – we do the best we can. Suffice to say that we hope to organize talks on ‘Judging’, ‘Calibration’ etc.

Prizes: Vouchers will be handed out to First Prize winners only. JJ has offered to sponsor vouchers for those who win First Prize in the four sections: Prints – Set Subject and Open; and Projected Images – Set Subject and Open. His business, Picture Works, is not a franchise – we appreciate his generosity. At the end of the year, a ‘Best Image of the Year’ will be selected (via the blogsite) and the winner will receive a print developed on canvas.

Interclub: Members recently discussed how Interclub could be improved. Our recommendations have been set out in a document which has been forwarded to all those clubs participating in Interclub. We do not yet know who will host Interclub next year. A new PSSA director still has to be appointed (Neil Swart has re-located to Gauteng), and when this happens we hope to be able to report to a facilitator who can evaluate and decide on a few new and improved guidelines for Interclub.

The R500 voucher received by HPS for coming joint second in Interclub 2008, was used to buy ‘lenspens’ for the 6 photographers who did well in Interclub – Andre(28 out of 30); Michele, Eric, Nicole, Ernst and Emma (all 27).

Blogsite: Instead of having a monthly newsletter, we are going to start a blog with WordPress.com, which is going to become our ‘ongoing’ newsletter. You will be able to click into it regularly, and will find all the information usually found in the newsletter, on the blog. Bear in mind that we also have a Flick site – http://www.flickr.com/groups/helderbergphoto to which all members may belong … Steve is the administrator and will ‘invite’ you if you indicate that you would like to take part … please join up – I seem to be the only one using it at the moment!

If you have your own flickr-site, or if you have a blog-site, or even a web-address, please let Steve know so that he can insert it as a ‘link’ on our blog.

Honorary Membership: It gives me great pleasure to announce that Nicole Palmer is being made an Honorary Member this evening. She is a past chairman of this club, and is well known for her teaching abilities, and presentation of popular workshops in Namibia and Stellenbosch. Congratulations, Nicole!
