The auction provides a significant portion of the event proceeds each year.

Our silent auction this year has special meaning to us. With the theme “Feels Like Home”, we are seeking items from the community that represent the local flavor of our city or that have a “homelike” feel to them. With the holidays upon us and with the economy and winter weather making our mission ever more critical every night, we thought it a good time to reflect on what home means. The local businesses, artists and community members are part of what helps make Boise feel like home to so many. We would be honored if you would consider donating an item our auction. Donors will be recognized in the printed program for the evening, which is expected to sell out at 800 attendees.

Please do not feel that you cannot contribute if your item does not follow the “Feels Like Home” theme. We are extremely grateful for any contributions, and may do some creative packaging if combinations of items seem appropriate.

To make a donation, please email interfaithauction@gmail.com or call Larissa Lamson at 794-4704. We will get the details from you and arrange for item pickup.

Donations to Interfaith Sanctuary (a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization) are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. Interfaith Sanctuary will provide you with a receipt for your tax purposes.

Note: A homemade quilt and bikes will be on display for early bidding at Bittercreek Restaurant in December.

In February 2009, three local agencies received a “Reaching Out” grant from the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization to improve hospice outreach to Boise veterans experiencing homelessness.

Interfaith Sanctuary Housing Services partnered with the Boise VA Medical Center and Legacy Home Health and Hospice to create Project Link. Project Link employed a needs assessment to determine how many homeless veterans are in the Boise area; how many are eligible for, but not receiving hospice care; and what barriers they face in receiving hospice/palliative care services.

Interfaith Sanctuary Housing Services (ISHS) began sheltering people experiencing homelessness in the Boise area in 2005. Sanctuary sheltered 885 people in the 2009 program year and it is estimated that 25 percent of those sheltered were veterans.

Legacy Home Health and Hospice has partnered with the Federal Veterans Hospital since 2005 in caring for veterans at the end of life. Over the past four years, the agency has served over 1000 individuals.

The Boise VA has informally provided services to homeless veterans in the shelter and in the community through the Homeless Stand Down, on-site shelter visits to assist homeless veterans in enrolling in VA programs, and the expansion of homeless veteran transitional and permanent housing options.

At last count, Interfaith Sanctuary had 34 veterans residing at the shelter and the Boise Rescue Mission reported to have 28 veterans at their location. The project found many real and perceived barriers that deter or prevent these veterans from receiving hospice care. These include lack of access to affordable medical care, lack of knowledge about medical resources and lack of knowledge about end-of-life care. At the beginning of the study, 21% of the participating veterans hadn’t received medical care for more than five years, 35% had no knowledge of Medicare or Medicaid and a large majority had misconceptions about end-of-life care.

Through case management and information sharing sessions, the project worked to address these barriers. In addition, Project Link developed policies for the future referral and care of hospice-eligible residents.

The results of the project show that one way of addressing barriers faced by veterans experiencing homelessness is through the creation of strong relationships. This tactic required full commitment of VA representatives, hospice staff and shelter staff. In order to ensure this, Project Link created guidelines and a memorandum of understanding that must be agreed upon before partnering for residential care. Through ongoing relationships, veterans experiencing homelessness gain trust that will allow them to seek supportive services while giving them the proper channels of communication through which to do so.

“A major success of this project is that we were able to connect veterans with services that they were not receiving. It is my hope that the partnerships created through this project will continue to grow and offer veterans experiencing homelessness these vital health, housing and VA services” – Megan Murphy, Reaching Out Project Manager.

Project Link plans to share the study with local hospice service agencies, homeless services, veteran’s services and the larger community, paving the way for increased direct services and the development of new methods of service delivery to terminally ill homeless veterans.

Join 50 community business leaders and 55 teens from 15 area high schools in raising money to put a new roof on the Interfaith Sanctuary. A community wide effort is underway to raise the money necessary to re-roof the building and provide a dry, safe place for those needing sanctuary.

About Leadership Boise

Leadership Boise has, and continues to seek, the best, brightest, most energetic and interested participants. As one of the oldest Chamber-sponsored leadership programs in the United States, Leadership Boise has graduated more than 1,200 civic leaders since its inception in 1975.

The purpose of Leadership Boise is to identify these new and potential leaders and to offer a comprehensive program that will:

Enhance and develop knowledge and understanding of our community, its complexities and its potential.
Motivate and encourage participants to assume leadership roles in the community.
Provide an opportunity for participants to meet and exchange ideas with each other and with current community leaders.

About the Project

The Leadership Boise Class of 2008-2010 selected Interfaith Sanctuary as their service project for their important work, and their particular need. Interfaith Sanctuary was able to purchase a building offering more than 10,000 square feet for services and secure housing near downtown in 2007. While the building has provided the right facility for services in terms of space, accessibility, and client privacy, it is in desperate need of a new roof. In winter months the snow melt and rain result in leakages throughout the building. The condition of the roof affects virtually every function of the agency and Leadership Boise is partnering with Interfaith to raise the last part of the funds needed to assure this important project is able to be completed as soon as possible. Through efficient budgeting, grants and generous donations from others in the community, Sanctuary has raised over half of the money required to re-roof the building. Our Leadership Boise Class is working to help them meet the remainder of their fundraising goal, which is approximately $30,000. Our goal is to have these funds raised by Saturday, April 25th, which will coincide with the day that Leadership Boise will be onsite at Interfaith Sanctuary performing repairs and clean-up work for the facility.

Please help the Leadership Boise Class of 2008-2010 reach our goal of bringing $30,000 to Interfaith Sanctuary for their roofing needs. Interfaith Sanctuary is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, so contributions are tax-deductible.

Click on the Leadership Boise logo to make a donation! Be sure to indicate ”Roof Project” in the designation box. Also, if you want to donate to help one of the high schools in their Leadership Boise Academy challenge, please designate the name of the high school after the words “Roof Project.” Participating High Schools are: Bishop Kelly, Boise High, Borah, Capital, Centennial, Central Academy, Cole Valley Christian, Eagle, Meridian Academy, Meridian, Meridian Technical, Mountain View, Rocky Mountain, Sheridan Academy and Timberline.

I lost my place to live and if it wasn’t for Sanctuary, I would be sleeping in the cold. Thank you. Sara S.

Thank you so very much for your generosity by doing this you are giving a whole lot of people a place to stay for a little while longer until we get ourselves together. Also, if it’s not too much to ask, could you say a prayer for all of us to come out of our situations and that those who believe that Christ Is will walk closer to Him and be set free. Thank you with all my heart. BJH

Thank you for all your help. JB

I know these are difficult times. And that there is a lot of uncertainty about the economy. Many of you may be struggling to pay your own way. And yet there you are considering a gift to those that are even less fortunate than you. That’s love. That’s real love. And even though we may never meet face to face, know this. I will always be grateful for your generosity. Bless You. Jim B.

I am grateful that people help the homeless. I am a shelter support volunteer and I enjoy giving to others. I am a person who listens to the problems of others. Anything you may give is so helpful. I am proud of all around us. VS.

My gratitude to all who help us here at Sanctuary. My prayers to your continued good health and happiness. God bless. Thank you. Valerie.

For myself, gratitude is everything. I am eternally grateful to Jesus for His love, mercy and grace he bestows upon me each and every day. I am also grateful for eternal life through my Lord and Savior. Although I am homeless, I am grateful for my bed at Sanctuary, for each bite of food I get to eat, and for clean clothing I get to wear every day. I thank Jesus every day for my life, and also for the very generous heart of Boise and all the donations of food and clothing that are given. Thank you for allowing me to share, and my God bless and enrich your lives immensely. Colossians 3:16: “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.” Rick C.

Well as we’re leaving Boise on Sunday, the Ironman event was on going. These can ride about 40 miles per hr. Well me and Mikey can go 10. But who do you thing will finish the race first? The turtle will always win. As we’re long-distance riding as we do anywhere between 60 and 80 miles per day and pack a 100 lbs of weight. Well in 2 days out of Boise we have done 160 mile so far. As we’re heading north up into Montana, we’re looking at some pretty bad clouds. Let’s hope it is it rain and not snow…hehehe. We will go about another 30 miles for the day. Hope to make Riggins ID by night time as in the morning we have a 15 mile climb at White Bird and it will take about 4 hrs to do it. We have been talking to people about our trip and telling them about the homeless in Boise and the U.S.A and that we all need to do our part to stop this. Well that is our update and we ask how all of you are doing your part in the homeless problems we have here. Have fun and godspeed. kenneth bettencourt

DAVID DEMILLE • ddemille@thespectrum.com • April 3, 2008 CEDAR CITY – When Mike Treadway start

DAVID DEMILLE • ddemille@thespectrum.com • April 3, 2008

CEDAR CITY – When Mike Treadway starts to feel worn down from riding his bicycle up mountains, through valleys and across state lines, he thinks about those he is trying to help.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, between 5 million and 8 million Americans will experience at least one night of homelessness over a five-year period.

Treadway wants to help explain how it happens and what can be done to prevent it.

“There’s a perception out there about the homeless,” he said. “But they’re just like anyone else. There’s millions of Americans out there one paycheck away from being homeless, and they don’t realize it.”

For nearly a month, Treadway has been riding from town to town, camping by night and visiting with people by day, raising awareness and promoting education on homelessness.

And, he’s just getting started.

Treadway is in the midst of a 4,000-mile trip that started March 15 in Gallup N.M., and will likely last into August as he travels to Homer, Alaska.

With only his equipment, some water bottles, information booklets on homelessness, a tent and sleeping bag, Treadway travels as many as 100 miles each day, depending on where he’s headed and who he wants to help along the way.

At each city and town, he stops, visits residents and volunteers at the local homeless shelter.

In Cedar City, he spent some time at the local Iron County Care & Share, helping serve food and volunteering to repair some broken bicycles.

A Tennessee native and former rodeo cowboy and stuntman who has biked more than 17,000 miles in his career as an endurance cyclist, Treadway found himself in financial hardship in 2005, and was homeless on the streets of Boise, Idaho.

It was there that he received a helping hand at a homeless shelter called Interfaith Sanctuary, which is open to people of all faiths, or those without. After volunteering at the shelter, he decided he had found his new calling in life.

Treadway decided to use his experience as an outdoorsman, survivalist and endurance cyclist to spread awareness and knowledge about the plight of homelessness and how everyday people can help, so he hopped on his bike, traveled the country and talked to people.

“I’ve got my own personal goal,” he said. “And I won’t stop ’til I’ve achieved it.”

As he spreads his message about helping the homeless, Treadway has no sponsor, no financial backing and no guarantee that he’ll have a place to sleep from night to night.

He depends entirely on donations and the kindness of strangers, and only accepts enough to pay for food and bike repairs.

“I rely on faith to provide me with what I need,” he said.

Treadway does encourage people to donate to Interfaith Sanctuary, referring them to the shelter’s Web site, and his friends in Boise say they are grateful for his efforts.

Jayne Sorrels, director of Interfaith Sanctuary, said Treadway was always friendly, and always willing to help around the shelter once he got there.

When the idea of using his unique talent – long-distance bicycling – to educate people around the country about homelessness it was a turning point in Treadway’s life, Sorrels said.

“All of the sudden he could see it,” she said. “He said ‘Wow, this is going to save my life.’”

Sorrels said Treadway is equipped to help people understand about who the homeless are, how they became homeless and what can be done to help.

“One of the benefits of it is to put a different face on homelessness,” she said.

Sorrels said many people have ambitions, but Treadway’s dedication and courage in actually living one of his dreams makes him a terrific model for many of the people he’ll come across in his travels.

Sorrels said it’s been great to see him going out and making it happen.

“I’m hoping that for him this gives him a greater purpose and gets him going,” she said. “I also hope he might inspire some other people who are homeless.”

Dustin Jones, Cedar City, said Treadway’s story was inspirational, and hit upon an issue that many people can easily forget about.

“I think people tend not to pay attention,” he said. “Hopefully, things like this raise peoples’ awareness and get people involved in helping.”

Treadway said he wants to continue his efforts to raise awareness when his trip is over, and even said he plans on writing a book, but for now it is all about the journey.

He pedals his way out of Cedar City with more than 3,000 miles to go, but said the importance of his cause gives him all the energy he needs.

“It’s all fun,” he said. “It’s all fun when you just keep your faith and enjoy the best parts of it along the way.”

I’m taking our message on the road, across the land, talking to people, spreading awareness, & sharing knowledge about helping the homeless. Most people are curious to know how their donations to Interfaith Sanctuary go towards fighting homelessness. The struggles in a homeless community and a cross country bike ride can be challenging and life changing journeys. Helping spread awareness about our cause inspires me to ride harder & further.

If you are collecting items from a group of your contacts, you could pick up the items and deliver to the River offices* or individuals can bring items there Monday – Friday from 8:30 am – 5:30 pm. Sandy Anderson at the River is also willing to pick up items – people can call to arrange this at 947-5404 (office) or 867-1299 (cell).

In order for us to track what’s coming in (so we know something’s happening out there) we ask that you e-mail Yvette Sedlewicz, a Sanctuary Community Volunteer at yvette4759@gmail.com. Please include your phone number in the e-mail and indicate if you are delivering the item or having it picked up by the River or if you need help with this.

* River Office: 5257 Fairview Ave. #260. They are in a building called 7 Plaza between Curtis and Orchard.

Volunteers Needed

Volunteers are needed at the concert event. My bet is that this is going to be fun! (I’ll be there.) Here’s what’s needed. If you can volunteer, please e-mail me at info@interfaithsanctuary.org with “Concert Volunteer” in the subject line. Include your name and phone number. I will confirm your volunteer position by e-mail.

(1) floater – 5:30 – 11:00 pm

Note: We’re also going to need some people with trucks at closing (11 pm) in case there are items left over. If so, they’ll need to be delivered to Sanctuary. Let me know if you can help with this part.

Remember that we need all of this arranged by this Friday! Thanks for your help. I’m confident that we will have an excellent event with your support.

After a great deal of work and the efforts of many individuals and organizations to ready the new building for operations, Interfaith Sanctuary will open for services on Thursday, November 1! Overnight shelter and supportive services will be provided for men, women, and families from 6 pm – 7 am seven days per week.

“In this first phase of our operations, we will be able to shelter 100 individuals per night. We’ve had to install a partial sprinkler system which allows us to use half of the building at this time. Given this, we’ve needed to adjust our plans slightly. We will not have a separate sleeping area for couples, although couples are very welcome to stay with us and will be sheltered in the same building. We plan to install a full, permanent sprinkler system in the spring and this will open up the whole building for services. At that time, we’ll be able to add an entirely separate shelter for families, a couples sleeping area, two hospitality rooms, a family supportive services office, and overflow sleeping areas. We are ecstatic at this point though as the weather begins to get cold that we’ll be able to open and still serve 100 people a night! It has been an amazing experience watching people from so many different faith traditions pulling together and working side-by-side to get us ready to open. ” - Jayne Sorrels, Shelter Administrator.
