No, not actual bananas. I went bananas. Before entering the auction to pay for the stuff we (read I) bought I told Rickard he mustn’t be mad. Thankfully he is very understanding!!

The shopping list:
- a clutch made of snake skin
- two vases
- two padded quilts
- rugs
- an old picnic bag
- a small glass jar

I forgot to take pictures of the clutch and the rugs, but I think the others will suffice for now.

Something else not in the pictures is all the junk that comes with the things I want. For example the tiny blue jar. I bought the box full of crap only for that item and got three other things. I once had the thought that I was gonna save all the junk and maybe have a yard sale or something. I’ve kept on saving a lot of stuff but unfortunately never sold anything. Gonna have to take some time and sort through it, I think.

Yesterday was my first totally free day since last summer. Today, on my second day of nothingness, me and Rickard are gonna be in a competition called Innovation Camp. Unfortunately we couldn’t be on the same team, we would’ve crushed the competition then! It’s idea generation on a real problem given to us by a local company. The winning team, who comes up with the best solution, gets some kind of diploma I think. Could be fun!

Have a rainy day!

Love

Some pretty exciting changes have been happening in my career/social life as of the past few weeks.

Some pretty exciting changes have been happening in my career/social life as of the past few weeks. Not only did I get to go on a pretty classic double date (mini golf was included and I lost horribly!) but the chance to collaborate with a one of my favorite photographers is in the works. We both are over the top busy (who isn’t) but have been scheming some epic shoots letting pinterest be our meeting ground. Seeing we have never worked together before our mutual board is a way for us to see how our styles connect. In my research enabled me to dig deep into one of my favorite blogs, Dust Jacket and found a theme in my inspiration.

Extremely floral wallpaper- even the matchy-matchy is working it’s magic on me. These photos make me have flashbacks to my first job at a wallpaper/paint store. Tearing out discontinued styles then making epic collages on my bedroom walls.

Bright and colorful perfect for an accent wall. I have the perfect wall in my house (if I owned it) or found a print truly amazing that I couldn’t pass up.

A three level 12m x 6m box was embedded into the side of a sand dune. The house has three rooms. The lower ground floor is for guests and the single space can be divided by a sliding wall into two rooms if so required. Similarly the single space on the middle level can also be divided to separate the owner’s bedroom from a small sitting area. The top floor is for living and eating and takes advantage of views across a rural landscape. The top floor is also a daylight photographic studio.

In the Kew house two semiotic devices were employed (the divided plan – east and the kitchen table – west) to illustrate the principal architectural proposition of the building ie the east/west hybrid. My interest in this idea stems from observations of the way our country is evolving and how through that evolutionary process emerge social forces which shape our thinking as architects. This country’s unequivocal political and economic acceptance of its region has permanently changed the face of our nation. These circumstances offer architects in Australia a chance to work within a unique social dynamic where our European history is placed alongside our regional reality and where our responsibility as a profession is to respond to this situation.

In traditional Chinese architecture the aisle is a fluid outer building continuous around the perimeter of the inner building. In traditional Japanese architecture the aisle (gejin) is not continuous when added to a structure (hisashi) but is fluid space when an inner building is partitioned (hedate) to cause an aisle to be formed. The traditional outback Australian homestead is also surrounded by fluid space (verandah) which is sometimes partly enclosed with flywire or glass to form an indoor/outdoor space (sunroom). Where in cooler climates the roof of the aisle provides shelter from snow and rain, in the outback the verandah helped shade the vertical surfaces of the building from direct solar radiation. In both eastern and western examples the verandah provided transitional living space. Shiguru Ban’s ‘9 Square grid house’ uses hedate to provide numerous spatial combinations including aisle space which is formed by the overhang of the monolithic slab roof of that building. The Carter/Tucker house is primarily an investigation of the verandah/aisle and its potential as an iconic element common between eastern and western architecture.

The verandah exists in this house in an abstracted form. It has been analysed and then re-created using a process similar to that which Braques and Picasso employed in their Analytical (first stage) Cubist paintings of last century. In other words elements of the object exist throughout the building however its traditional form is not immediately evident. On all three levels the outer (timber screen) skin of the building tilts open and by tilting an awning is formed on the perimeter of the building. The horizontal plane of the ceiling is thus extended beyond the building line. At the same time the apparently flat facade of the building is modified in an arbitrary manor as a result of the owner’s particular requirement for view and shade at any given time. This (capricious) component allows the fluidity of the aisle space to transfer itself across the facade of the building and the very act of habitation means that the facade becomes a dynamic representation of the plan. On the middle level for example the bedroom then becomes the verandah while the corridor, formed by the insertion of a service core, becomes the inner room. Depending on the time of the year the verandah can then be enclosed with sliding flyscreens to become a sunroom, or left unenclosed. The bedroom space can then be further modified by the operation of the hedate wall which when drawn across the bedroom forms an inner building within the aisle. The idea of fluid space is further emphasised by the service core being kept free from both ends of the building so that movement through the floor is continuous – no steps have to be retraced.

By describing the three rooms of this buildings as aisles and therefore by definition transitional I am also alert to the fact that this is a weekend house, not a permanent dwelling. There is invested in this building a strong sense of childhood that begins with the anticipation of travel and promotes the sense of reward that comes at the conclusion of a journey. A number of these ideas were explored in my first house in Carlton some years ago. The one hour journey from Melbourne to this house does not conclude by arriving at the site. The visitor is then asked to walk uphill to nearly the back of the block where they enter on the middle level along a processional deck and through a ceremonial portal. Once inside they are faced with choice (up or down?) that takes them on a journey through the building which culminates in the ultimate reward of the roof terrace and its associated views. Along the way rooms are discovered behind apparently solid panels. In a recent visit to Paris I re-visited Le Corbusier’s Roche/Jeanneret house and was reminded as to where I had first encountered some fifteen years ago that same idea of journey, discovery and reward in architecture.

Finally there is a raw humanity to this building which is first evidenced in the MacSween house (1996) and further developed in the Kew house. In both this building and the Kew house the facades are veiled with a system of adjustable louvres which blur the edges of the building and constantly modify its appearance depending upon the position of the viewer. This is a conscious attempt to accentuate the buoyancy of intermittent light changes caused by changing light conditions, without which clarity and obscurity would not exist. Light enters or is prevented from entering the building in a constantly changing way. Nature itself acts in this manner – constantly making and unmaking, filling and emptying. The entire building has been designed to weather – to allow the inevitability of the environment and time to play a positive role. This rawness also ensures that the visitor is never seduced by the object itself ( a superficial outcome) but rather by their own capacity to experience the potential of the human spirit.

Nashville has a lot of parts to it just like most other cities. Let’s see: East Nashville, The Gulch, Hillsboro Village, Belle Meade, Hillwood, West Meade, Green Hills, Bellevue, Franklin, Brentwood, Leiper’s Fork to name a few.

In the last few months the real estate market has been really hot. We are seeing multiple offers on houses, houses that sell before they ever hit the market, and still some areas that aren’t moving as well.

As a real estate consultant, I can tell you about the nitty gritty that your agent cannot, like honest answers about traffic, schools, and which houses you can renovate easily. Since my background encompasses design and building, I can pretty much walk through a house and put general numbers on paper as to what particular upgrades or renovations would cost. I come close every time.

This is one of those houses that you can just eewww and aaahhh over. It’s in quaint Leiper’s Fork area. Enjoy this one!

When we moved into our house just over five years ago we immediately started ripping out carpets, sanding floorboards and painting all the rooms. Funnily enough, deep red carpets paired with lilac or mustard coloured walls weren’t exactly to our taste…

Since then we haven’t done very much to the house apart from adding a laundry room and renovating the bathroom (as we only have one bathroom for five of us it takes quite a beating). The neutral colour palette and stripped wooden floors combo that we have chosen is easy to live with and can easily be updated by changing the curtains, cushions or furnishings. Another reason for not making any major changes is that we are hopefully planning an extension in the not too far future, creating a big open plan kitchen/living area downstairs and converting the loft into a master bedroom with en-suite. However, this is still at least another year down the line and lately I’ve found myself looking at interior magazines and Pintrest boards rather wistfully, wishing that I could incorporate some of the ideas into my own home.

It just so happens that last year we had a leak in our roof which, although it was fixed before Christmas, damaged the ceiling and wall in our bedroom (if you look closely at the picture below you can see the stain on the ceiling in the left hand corner, and the water has also seeped into the wall and marked the wallpaper). Well if you ask me it’s the perfect excuse to redecorate the bedroom and change the look. I still like having a feature wall in there (it’s the only one in the house) as I think it softens the room a bit. The wallpaper we have at the moment is by Neisha Crosland and I really love her designs, including the two in the picture above. I think a grey and white colour scheme would be nice and calm, possibly with a bit of soft pink or lilac thrown in to add a feminine touch. Meanwhile, I’ll carry on surfing the net looking for more inspiration to pin to my boards. The great thing about Pintrest is that you can create your moodboards, chop and change as you like and keep them all in one place. If you want to follow me on Pintrest please click here.

What is more frustrating than going into a store to buy paint with the perfect color already picked out in your mind, and walking up to that infinite wall of color chips and feeling cheated. Not only do you see the color you had in mind but you see 15 slight variations of that same color. So, after a good amount of time you finally settle down to that one color that will be perfect…now, on to the accent and non-dominant wall colors… This process itself can take hours to complete. In fact, there are probably stacks of color chips and books and samples piled up on your table, with more possibilities than you were initially willing to consider.

Choices, they are the most freeing things we are armed with as human beings yet it can just as easily be a cage. What if you had an easier option? An option that combines psychological associations that bring us joy, reminders of peace, inklings of happy memories…

In 2009, we at The Mastery Institute, developed the first stages of an “easy choice”. We created a paint color system from the local environment in Bermuda, the system did not stop there. We discovered all throughout the US and the world there are patterns of color distribution. Each environment has an association with various colors that attach to culture, nature, architecture, lifestyles…

The paint system took into account the local environment and we then formulated colors that harmonized from an element in nature that blends with its natural surroundings. The palette is made up of fifteen colors that not only harmonize but offer five color choices at three levels of light reflectance. So, for example, not only are you choosing the flower that you carried in your wedding bouquet you are choosing the colors that enhance the beauty of that single object because of the environment it has come from. Or, a clown fish amongst coral. All of the colors within the palette work together. Based on light reflectance you can choose your dominant wall, the accent wall, decor accents and non-dominant interiors. The palettes also work harmoniously on building exteriors to create streetscapes that are balanced, harmonized and aesthetically pleasing.

Although our paint system began in Bermuda it quickly grew to encompass many regions. The initial launching of this color system in Bermuda can be seen at http://www.bermudapaint.bm Please view the video for an interactive experience. For further information or to inquire about color palettes contact the Mastery Institute.

This interesting old barn has prompted a 1930s style toning. I might try a different version of this image later. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I might do with it……….

Perhaps I should rephrase that…. !

Pollyanna is in hog heaven! “Out of Africa” is on! I am Baroness Blixen. Now that I have seen Africa, I can really be her. I’ve always wanted to be like her. It’s taken much of my lifetime to even believe I could be her. So many things and people have come in and out of my life that have helped me be her, or hindered me. It takes a lot of years, hutzpah, and other things to come out of your shell enough to realize who you are really and become who you want to become.

Sometimes I don’t think the majority of people have the guts or bravery to become who they really want to be. Leave it all on the table, live free or die, give it your all, jump first then look back. These are all phrases I live by. I take risks, some don’t play out as I expect or wanted them too. Others go far beyond what I anticipated. People, my mom especially, tried to tame me. Circumstances have broken me, as well as people. Others, laugh and make fun of me for all my antics and trying. Behind all this sweet, martyrdom is one kick-ass kind of chick. I’ll get there, someday one of my projects will turn out big and and then I’ll move on to another one.

…really should stay in Vegas. Las Vegas is truly the only city in the world that can get away

…really should stay in Vegas. Las Vegas is truly the only city in the world that can get away with the concept of “it’s not done until it’s overdone”. Moderation and Las Vegas are like fire and ice. Personally, the visual stimulation is exhausting. When visiting a museum or gallery there’s opportunity to take a break OR leave. However, in Vegas there’s no way to get away from the design principle that “Bigger is Better”. Now, I know some of you are thinking, “have you looked at your party pictures”. Yes, thank you very much! Did you hear me say the work is in bad taste or lacking in aesthetic appeal…NO. Again, parties are for a moment in time. I just don’t know that I could live or work in the “overdone” environment…24/7/365.

While neon has always made a statement in Vegas, Steven Wynn came along and took that over-scale aesthetic indoors. These shots are from the welcome area of The Encore. Designer Roger Thomas certainly understands scale and composition and is one of the leading designers in the hospitality industry.

The Home Store inside The Encore offers items to make your home have a touch of Vegas. I can’t envision all of these items in my home but I do have to appreciate the artistry. Imagine how long it takes to put glass seed beads on wires to make a Lion or Crested Crane. How much time does it take to pave’ a mirror with Aurora Borealis stones? How many flea markets do you have to visit to find enough 1960′s Optic Glass lamps to make these stunning Totems (I would gladly own one of these). The elements of each piece is actually quiet simple. Yet, the outcome and artistic value far from simple.

While The Bellagio is no longer owned by Steve Wynn his influence continues to be seen in their dramatic floral design. Yes, I know it looks like my work!!! Good to know if I ever need a job and want permanent dry skin and lips I can send Mr. Wynn my portfolio.

Of course, the design aesthetic applies to the dining and culinary aspect of the city. Society Cafe at The Encore provides both over-the-t0p design and delicious food.

Iron Chef Marc Forgione comes from a family of Top Chef’s. Bryan, Marc’s brother, is the new Executive Chef at Society. It’s called a cafe but it’s my favorite restaurant in Vegas. The food is always great and service is standard setting.

Then the shows…

Zarkana is the newest show produced by the Cirque du Soleil brand. Cirque has been such a great fit for Vegas. In fact, I think Vegas has helped Cirque come into its own. From a really fresh, interesting approach to a circus…in a tent…Cirque is now arguably the most innovative of all staged productions in the world.

Zarkana is the first Cirque show to be produced on a proscenium stage…think Radio City. It opened in November and still has some pacing issues to work out. However, it certainly lives up to the Cirque image of visual overload. As you see, the digital imagery sometimes upstaged the talent. They somehow ignored they were on a stage opposed to a massive theatre in the round.

Having said all that, take nothing away from the talent. The skills they display are stunning and breathtaking. Just like the simplistic elements from The Home Store, Cirque takes skills like juggling and balance acts to a level that surpasses human imagination.

Lovely is probably not a word to use with Vegas but the house was certainly “done to death”…and a good time was absolutely had by all. Next you get to see the contrast between the Vegas aesthetic and that of Southern California.

Accessories are usually the last, as they jump on the fact that there is this evident trend going on. I have always loved it, and love certain patterns of it as it can definitely can be overdone.

I am so happy that I have many more of my pieces available as prints! They look so great, it was such a big deal to me that the colours were true to the original oil paintings, and that the brush strokes and texture that gave the paintings their own depth and character were clear through the prints. The collection is a few of my favourites so far

Go to my online print shop here to purchase 11.7×8.3″ inch prints (A4 with few A3 available) for £15.

They are amazing to have as a collector or an admirer or artwork without the cost of an original.

So a couple of weekends ago we decided it was time to prepare our little outdoor space for summer. It turned out great. We simply used some small stones, bought some new flowers and brushed the floor. We are very happy with the result, it was cheap and just took half a day or so. It is always nice to come home to some flowers and likewise it makes it easier when leaving for work i the morning – as the flowers usually make you happy. The day after finishing decorating we finally bought an outside light and my boyfriend installed it (see last picture) and it looks amazing. Best of all, no more coming home to a pitch black entrance.

Mary Katrantzou, the lady behind some of the most amazing digital prints and art deco silhouettes of the time, may be veering into the leather goods and interior design lanes.

With the success of her collaboration with denim brand Current/Elliott and the launch of her e-commerce site coming in a matter of weeks, the sky’s the limit for the Greek-born designer.

Katrantzou is also gearing up to debut her pre-Spring/Summer 2014 collection next month, and with all of her well-deserved success, is looking to help others on her journey.

“Had this season not gone well, we wouldn’t be able to recruit, and our staff would be more overworked, and they would leave,” she explained. “So that risk always scares you. [I ask myself], am I presenting something that’s new, that will excite people? You doubt your longevity.”

I cannot wait for the many things in store. I wonder whether she’ll incorporate prints into her leather and interior lines or take a totally new approach. Either way, it’s sure to be fabulous.
