Image : http://www.flickr.com

The luxury lifestyle does not require a mansion. You do not have to wait until you can afford a big house on the beach, live in a beautiful home. Remember the luxury lifestyle is about quality things and people. Small cozy houses can be made luxurious for a small amount of money through clever interior design. Remember the self made wealthy do not spend money if they do not. Living a luxury lifestyle is not about throwing money away to look cool, it's simply about raising yourLiving. If you can do that economically, the better.

In this article I'll take you to the basics of interior design, which I studied when I renovate houses. The key to a successful reorganization is to make cosmetic improvements, not structural improvements to a house. The construction of new rooms, adding another layer to a structure or moving walls around is very expensive and moving walls especially can weaken the structure. You want a home WOW factor to improveImpression. Here are some tips …

Painting – a new paint job will do more to improve the appearance of your home than anything else. It is a relatively simple task, so you can save yourself a fortune by doing it yourself. Enter the area to be painted a good cleaning with sugar soap and scrape all the loose stuff. Bog up any cracks or holes to the surface is smooth, then paint. Whether you are an undercoat or not depends on what color you use. Get advice from an interiorShop. The underlying principle for all renovations, including painting is KISS, Keep It Simple Stupid. Keep using your color schemes simple, neutral colors, they reflect light better making rooms appear bigger effect, and they look cleaner. Be consistent throughout the house.

Kitchens – Do not go crazy, these can eat heaps of money if you are not careful. If your kitchen is then split, you have no choice but to receive as a new. If you avoid it, do not get but a new one just cosmetically touchhave you. New table tops, tiled splash backs, door handles, cupboard handles, tap handles, a paint job and floor will make a big difference and not cost the world.

Bathrooms – Another money pit. Light and bright is the secret here. Like the kitchen, when it crumbles, you have no choice but to replace a spent big money and things. If you can with him, however, change the table tops, door handles, cupboard handles, tap handles and floor tiles (wall tilescan be a big expensive work does not change, if possible) Get a new paint job, a new toilet seat, toilet paper holder and towel rail. This space will be transformed, and does not cost much.

Flooring – makes a huge difference. New carpet, tile or linoleum to transform a room. Also, remember if you have a good quality wood floor, ripped the carpet and polishing the floorboards. This looks fantastic and is inexpensive.

Doors – Change the door knobs throughout the apartment for aelegant style and make sure you remain consistent throughout.

Window treatments – These also transform a room. Make sure they fit with the rest of the room.

Landscaping – It costs a fortune. All you really need to do it (unless your garden is a write) is rip out all the plants, larger than for the incumbent. Install some of the edges, lay some turf where once again (if you can blind spots where the grass will not grow, you pave this area is expensive or the extension of the garden) over this area and plant shade resistant plants, newly planted garden with colorful plants and add mulch to your garden beds. Plant tall plants at the back of the perimeter gardens or in the middle of the central gardens and smaller plants in the foreground. Try a few different shades of green in the leaves obtained from various plants. Try planting a variety of flowers, so you have something blooming in most times of the year. Flowers can attract to your garden and a pleasant fragrance and birds. Flusskieselor concrete steps are also an inexpensive alternative to paths.

Painting the street – makes a big difference to the WOW factor. Probably best suited to a professional to do it if they own scaffolding, let them risk their necks.

Terraces and verandahs – Cheaper than adding rooms to your house, but adds square footage to your living room. If you live above the snow line this may not like, but for the warmer climates outdoor living spaces are wonderful for entertaining. Tile overconcrete porches.

Fences – If you already have a fence, give it a new paint job. If you do not rely on a fence in front of a white picket fence. Add an attractive mailbox.

Get a new front door – this really add to or affect the appearance of your home.

The bottom line is, you do not need to change where you live necessarily, as it looks. Spend your money on luxurious furnishings not to expensive structural changes. Read about the layout of your home and how to learnto decorate, to raise your standard of living and luxury to your lifestyle.

1. The Basics of Interior Design

There are 3 basic guidelines for successful interior design.

A successful room is functional.

A successful room expresses a mood.

A successful room displays a sense of harmony.

Function – Ask yourself, what are the intended function of this space? A room must serve it intended function. No matter how beautifully you decorate a room, if yourScheme can not fulfill all the functions you need the space to perform, then the room has failed. If a restaurant is not convenient to eat in, then it is not. If a bedroom is not appropriate in his sleep, then it is not. Are there in your living room, adequate lighting for reading, if any of the functions of the room? Are there tables in the vicinity of the seat to put on your drink? You get the idea.

Mood – What is the atmosphere to bring this space to express? Are you after a sleek, modern, sophisticated look, or a rustic, casual, warm mood etc? Every aspect of the space you create, you must keep the same mood. Mood refers to the overall look or feel you want to bring the space to express. The color schemes, furniture, window treatments, floor treatments and lighting styles etc. all have to stand with that look and feel consistent.

Harmony – all the separate elements in a room to work in harmony together. All elements should feel they are appropriate and nothing should be madePlace. Each element should be in the mood to scale harmonious, quality and color. We have already mood. The scale must also be harmonious, this means all elements should be the same extent as any other, and the same amount of space itself. No big chairs in small rooms or small chairs in big rooms. No big chairs with small chairs, etc. The quality also needs to be harmonious. If you use expensive high quality furniture, then do not use them with cheap looking curtains etc. And finallythe color schemes must be harmonious. The color schemes in your furniture, etc. do not have the color in your carpet collision

In each room you create yourself, you must follow these 3 guidelines.

Now we want to discuss the 4 steps for designing a room.

Sketch of a room.

Drawing a floor plan.

Furniture layout.

To plan lighting.

Sketching a room – In this phase, you need only make a rough sketch of your room and write down accurate measurements for the lengthof space, width of the room and ceiling height. Height of fittings (the plates on the floor between the walls and the ceiling and the boards around windows and doors, etc.) and the dimensions of your doors and windows must be recorded and measured. Measure how far the windows and doors are from the corners of the room from the ceiling and floor. Are there any features in the room (air conditioning units, fireplaces, etc.)? Measure these and write them up. Note where the electricalSockets and switches are. Note where each lamps.

Run a checklist conditioners. Write down everything that is done and for what condition it is in. Everything except the furniture, I mean. Is there something to be repaired? Write down what the window types. Are they aluminum sliding windows, wooden window sashes etc? Now, take photos from every corner of the room as a reference.

Drawing a floor plan – Buy some graph paper from a paper-supply store. Repull your sketch to scale on graph paper. A good benchmark for most of the rooms usage is 1 / 4 inch = 1 foot. You need a detailed floor plan so that you plan on a piece of furniture can later. In your plan, where the doors and windows are to be scaled too. You do not see your measurements on the plan it is too much clutter to keep all measurements on your sketch. Enter your plan is on the way north. This is important as it tells you where the sun go down on and inRelation to your room window. How is the sunlight your room? If the setting sun must be blocked by heavy curtains? Are you the morning sun to your advantage, the room after a cool night, warm?

Furniture layout – There are 4 questions you must ask yourself to decide when and where you put your furniture.

What are the equilibrium lines of the room?

Where are the traffic patterns in the room?

What is the focus in the room?

How can the axis of theRoom?

The balance lines are easy to determine. Draw 2 faint lines in your floor plan layout of the room in half length wise and width wise. This divide your room into 4 quadrants. This is important because you have the same "weight" of the furniture in each quadrant in order to have the space must be balanced.

Traffic patterns are also easy. Leave 36 inches clear in front of each door to leave room for the swing of the door. Also keep 12 inches clear in front of theWindow for access. Traffic patterns tell you to place where no furniture, mark these on your floor plan.

Well, what about the center of the room is? Is it a fireplace? Bay? Blank wall, where it will go home theater screen or an artwork? Do you plan to use your furniture layout to concentrate them.

Make an axis for the room. They now want to draw an imaginary line on the middle of the wall from floor to ceiling with your focus. Continue this line across the ceiling and down tothe opposite wall to the floor. The idea is you want the focus balanced from floor to ceiling. If your focus is a fireplace this would mean that by simply filling in a picture or something about them in the room. You need to balance both sides of the room. Thus, one would have something on the other wall of the same visual "grown" along the axis line. Everything is about balance.

You are now ready to plan where your furniture will start going in the room. You need to place the furniturein space, so it takes advantage of the focus and serves the function of the space. Arrange your furniture so that all 4 quadrants same visual "weight". This does not mean that you need to have a mirror image of the furniture in the quadrants, but it just means you do not want every piece of furniture in one quadrant or one half. Visually on your floor plan of the room should look balanced. Draw to scale representative of your furniture on the floor plan to. You try different ideas. Decide which aYou find particularly attractive.

Lighting Plan – Do not try to light the room. Light objects in space. Making First, allow your lighting needs to the people on the specific tasks of the room. For example, with lamps for reading, playing cards, etc. This is called task lighting. You also need adequate lighting, not to shock people into things. This is called ambient lighting. You can use the lighting to influence the mood. Bright lights for High Life, subdued lighting for a cozy and romanticMood. Like everything to forgive the various elements (elements, the pun, I'm so clever) your lighting plan must be in harmony with each other. Decorative objects with spot lighting is also a nice gesture. Do not forget to take into account where the outlets are. You want to keep unsightly electric wires as short as possible and hidden if you can.

2. Furniture

When it comes to choosing furniture there are a few points.

If the pieceMobility function, and costs?

Is it appropriate mood and style? Does it have the right look?

Is it suitable quality? Is it similar to other quality furniture?

The play is appropriate proportions? If the various parts in pleasant harmony with the others?

The play is the correct scale? Is it in harmony with the size of the objects and space around it?

Are the materials appropriate? Bright, intense colors and bold patterns increase visual "weight".Silent and neutral tones and solid colors required to reduce the visual "weight".

When it comes to the placement of furniture, the following guidelines:

The shape of the sides of the furniture should reflect the shape of the wall. Insert round tables in the corner of the room.

Avoid placing rectangular furniture at an angle to straight walls.

If the space on the wall is horizontal, a horizontally shaped furniture contribute as best.

If the space on the wall is square, asquare piece of furniture looks best.
Vary the height of the most important pieces in the room.

Spread the colors in the room.

Here are a selection of some of the major furniture styles from throughout history and how to spot.

Early American styles – The lines of this device is very simple. The workmanship is unrefined and rustic. It's small, has a square frame structure, is painted in the rule and has square legs with simpledecorative chips.

Mediterranean-style – This is heavy furniture. There's nothing subtle about it. It is solid, square and built to last. It is usually elaborately carved wood. The Spanish Mediterranean furniture often featured leather that was decorated with metal nail-heads.

French styles – Louis XIV style (1643 – 1715) has a massive X-shaped stretchers, the legs, a basically square shape and the seat and backrest are padded. This style was detailedOrnaments.

– Regence Style (1700 – 1730) was a transition of Louis XIV and Louis XV. It had cabriole legs (bent legs) and a curvature at the top of the backrest.

– In the style of Louis XV (1730 – 1775) had curved shapes and forms, extensive rococo decoration stretchers (elaborate decoration incorporating a shell motif), romantic images, delicate shape and design and no leg.

– Louis XVI (1775 – 1789) was milled straight slim legs (usually with a box-shaped tipincludes a carved rosette), rectangular shapes or mechanically produced curves, classical motifs (such as columns, urns and lyres) and delicate construction.

– Directoire style (1790 – 1804) was simple, elegant lines and patriotic motifs (including military motifs, agricultural motifs and crossed flags), classical motifs inspired (according to ancient Egypt, Rome and Greece), curled backs and scrolled sofa arms outwardly curved or classic straight leg fat legs.

– Empire style (1804 –1831) had a heavy masculine look, polished veneers more often than carved wood surfaces, excessive use of Ormolu mounts (often large and bad) for, wooden chairs with backs and upholstered seats, inspired by classical Greece (including the boat bed recamiore day bed and stand), mirror back console table, motifs inspired by ancient Egypt, Rome and Greece as well as patriotic and military motifs.

English styles – William & Mary style (1689 – 1702) was tops (tops in the hoodForm of single or double round arches that look like dutch roofs), curved X shaped stretchers, inverted cup on straight turned legs, in addition to these features Basically, they had straight lines.

Queen Anne-style (1702 – 1714) had cabriole legs often with shell motif on the knee, fiddle back splats and basically curved lines.

Early Georgian style (1714 – 1760) was the same as the Queen Anne style, but with extensive addition of carving, particularly eagles, lions, satyrs and cabochons. This carving was made possible by the introduction of mahogany.

Late Georgian style (1760 – 1811) was a collection of styles. In this era, each developed their own styles of carpentry. Some of them were:

Chippendale – He tried so many different things, it is his elusive "style", but you are looking for rococo motifs carved with open backs, Chinese motifs, Gothic motifs and curved open pediment tops.

Adam Brothers – Had straight legs, which were often pleated filter, but noboxed rosette, as you would with the style of Louis XVI. Also look for oval chair backs with spokes, lyres or other classical motifs like vases and urns.

Hepplewhite – Had curved chair backs (with shield, interlacing heart and oval), straight legs (but without the ribbing, as in the Adam style), spade and serpentine front foot on the piece of law.

Sheraton – The apostle of the line. Straight legs (no fluting but often necessary), lightness andElegance.

Regency style (1810 – 1837) was similar to the French Empire style, but uses different symbols.

Victorian style (1837 – 1901) was an attempt by the nouveau riche to simulate the luxury of an earlier time. It was materialistic and ostentatious. It eventually became a caricature of himself. Let not this happen to you.

20th Century styles – are often made of wood, made of metal and plastic. We see these styles all around us. Four major styles were and are:

ArtArt Nouveau – attempted to the machine age with carved wood and reject lines imitating nature with convoluted curves and shapes. An example is Tiffany lamps.

Art Deco – glorified ornamentation. Strongly influenced by the Cubist movement of the day. It was geometric forms and shapes.

Bauhaus – embraced the machine age. It rejected all ornamentation and elevated to function as ideal. A very minimalist style.

Post Modernism – is more of a style, but reallymakes it presence in furniture design as well. Basically, this is what is now being produced and it takes many different forms from many different designers studied.

Image : http://www.flickr.com

When it comes to a Japanese garden, you find that they are very well designed and they offer a sense of tranquility and fantastic style. All houses can take over a Japanese-style garden, and so if you remember to update your garden with an interesting design and peacefully in the Japanese garden, just for you.

Designing Your Own Japanese Garden

If you have decided on your own Japanese garden design, you will need to know exactly what a JapaneseGarden brings. Basically every Japanese garden can be stones, water and plants and a bridge that is also important. They should be a very pleasant on the eye, and so remember, when it comes to planning where you want to go everything comes.

While a Japanese garden in the first place, the water uses, there is a variety known as "karesansui" and that is not used, there is no water in his remarks at all known. How would fit someone who does not like the idea of including waterin their garden for whatever reason. However, despite the fact that there is no actual water, the goal of this style of Japanese garden to him the atmosphere of the water. This is done through the use of gravel and patterns. Low shrubs also come in handy to keep, so that in the eye.

Plant wise, things like cherry trees, ferns, mosses and evergreens and bamboo, all make excellent additions to any Japanese garden. You can also imitate the water quite well. InIn order to create the feeling of relaxation, are rocks are also used, especially unusual looking rocks.

Since the focus is on nature in a Japanese garden, no two rows are the same. The surfaces are made equal, and that you focus more on the finer details of the garden. Bridges and footbridges have a particularly strong part of Japanese gardens and stones are used to give the impression of mountains. Everything is reconnected to nature and, therefore, Japanese gardens are so breathtakingand peaceful.

The last is what you remember about Japanese gardens, that the stones that you are always made in an unusual way. Triangular shapes are also quite common and lanterns are often close in a position to give them a magical and mysterious phenomenon. To the Japanese, they also female and male parts of fire and water.

Un- and/or semi-employment certainly takes one down paths previously untrod. Having fallen into a role where I am not, lamentably, capturing Cary Grant’s heart as a feisty, independent, sharp-nosed, story-busting journalist with a cache of quick ripostes (Hollywood shure don’t make dames like Hildy Johnson anymore!) but rather acting as an assistant to a retired businessman (but no less feisty, sharp-nosed and quick-witted as Hildy, I would like to think!), I have:

sat in the driver’s seat of a Jaguar (but, unfortunately, did not take it anywhere);

been called a ‘whore’ as I walked to work, by a young schoolboy who was, I suspect, attempting to impress his pimply friends with his knowledge about such grown-up matters;

drunk my fill and more of a stunning previously unseen panorama of Melbourne city (which I hope to capture soon);

looked high and low around the city’s public transport system for a missing bag of the businessman’s friend;

been privy to a wonderful cache of old photos taken by a gwai lo (trans. westerner) travelling through China during the 1960s; and

realised I will never best a sturdy Romanian woman in a contest of strength.

And re-familiarised myself with Melbourne, of course.

Last time I have promised to put my works in this blog, on the last project in my Design 102 module

Last time I have promised to put my works in this blog, on the last project in my Design 102 module of the whole semester, called as Project ‘…for the…’. It is a project which we design a dwelling for our specific client in Malacca.

My chosen client through a lucky draw, at first is Christie Brinkley, a famous model. However, I am given a second chance of lucky pick since there is not much thing can be done on model. Hence, my second and final pick is Amadeus Mozart, a famous musician.

Part 1: Client and Function.

I need to get to know deeply onto the personalities and characteristics of Mozart. What is special about him? What is interesting about him? Mozart is addicted to music when he was only 3 years old, and he was able to write music when he was aged 5 only. He completed his works very fast, but stress was his main problem. His most famous work is ‘Requiem’, which is incomplete, as he felt into severe illness and died before even he could finish it. I am trying to design a place for him to complete the music and perform it.

Client and Function poster (1 A2 size board)

Part 2: Site Analysis.

We had conducted a site visit at Malacca Old Town area. I have chosen a water edge area, a very spacious empty area in the region of new development. Many modern buildings are built and being under construction there, and my dwelling will be notified as part of it, proudly. The calm atmosphere from the peaceful surrounding, flowing water, and windy breeze will surely be effective in reducing stress by Mozart while writing his marvelous piece of work. My site faces the Maritime Museum, a museum built in a form of Portuguese ship and Taming Sari Tower, an observation tower basically for tourism.

My chosen site sits right beside a newly-built park, in a geometrical pattern. My dwelling will be an extension of the park, benefiting the existing pedestrian walkways, which will direct visitors from the tourist center nearby, to the square, next to the park, and finally, to my dwelling. It will be able to attract visitors in such a strategic location of tourist hotspot.

Site Analysis board (1 A0 size board)

Part 3: Design.

The name of my dwelling will be very grand, ‘Performing Center of Amadeus Mozart’. Malacca has many museums, many cafes, many tourist spots, but don’t have a proper performing center. There are many spaces in my dwelling, making it as multi-purpose, such as lobby area to welcome visitors, gallery to display his masterpieces, outdoor platform for audiences to enjoy the surrounding, private working space for Mozart to write his music, and staff area for performers to prepare for performances. The main space will be the performing hall, with a stage and concrete terraces as seating area.

Two concepts are chosen based on Mozart’s personalities.

1. Emphasis on external appearance

My dwelling will have a grand and modern outlook appearance, and is easily visible from afar, especially from the Taming Sari Tower and Maritime Museum. It is located on the spacious empty land in the middle of the reclaimed land (Malacca River Square) on Malacca River. The large scale of the project making it more distinctive. The interior is very plain, with no decorations or ornamentations. The seating area of performing hall is just of concrete terraces, and all the floor, wall, and roof have no finishes. Even the stage is simple, with a background of glass screen.

Mozart emphasized on his outer appearance. He loved to wear elegant clothing. However, he was very poor and has financial difficulties. Hence, this concept suits him the most, and shows that this place is dedicated for him, while not letting the others know (also not letting the others know that he was actually poor).

2. No distinction between exterior and interior.

As I have mentioned just now, there is so much difference between exterior and interior look of the building. Now, there is another concept of linking them back, harmoniously, by using one material: glass. Mozart should not be enclosed by solid walls when he was writing his music, as this will lead to stress easily. Hence, his private working space is built mainly of glass, four walls of glass to separate him from the outside weather, while combining the area with the surrounding. He will be enjoying the time of writing his music with the surrounding at a high level. Imagine, how comfortable he will be…

Usual backdrop of current performing center is a plain black wallpaper. For my performing center, it will be different. The backdrop will be the lively background showing the Maritime Museum and Taming Sari Tower with the surrounding. By this way, audiences will feel different kind of atmosphere at different time of performances. It will not attracts the eyes of the audiences during performances but will affect the mood of the audiences. They have entered a boring, dull and plain hall, hence, their focus will be just on the music, while the backdrop plays a role to regain their feeling of being carried away by the music performed by Mozart. The glass backdrop will also provides natural lighting during daytime of performances. The side facade of the gallery is also built of glass, but of two different glass. There are no nice views visible from that side, hence translucent glass will be used, so that the visitors will only enjoy the music sheets displayed. The upper facade will be of transparent movable glass, which allows sunlight to enter for natural lighting, and for air ventilation, supporting the idea of a green building, in a clean, unpolluted and historical city of Malacca. The facade which faces the park will be of solid wall and glass wall. Solid wall separates the performing hall from the outside, so that the activities occuring in the park and square will not disturb the performances. However, the visible lobby from outside will be able to attract visitors to enter.

The entrance to the private working space is small, and short, specially dedicated to Amadeus Mozart. He was s short and small person. However, as soon as he enters the area, the large volume of the space will provides greater freedom and movement for him, thus, giving him more space and less pressure to complete his music. He can went out to the nearby park to enjoy the scenery too.

I have explained almost all of the things related to my design.

Part 4: Interior space.

I have chosen a portion of the performing hall, to be investigated on its finishes, lighting, and construction details. The foundation will be simple, since there is already an existing concrete surface on the ground and the site sits on a reclaimed land (reinforced and stabilized). The portion is on the side showing part of the seating area, stage, and entrance to the outdoor platform, accompanied by the glass backdrop. Among the most interesting feature of my design is the glass backdrop. There is no finishes on it, as i have explained earlier. The lighting during the day is provided with aid of the glass screen. The materials used to built is mainly of concrete and glass.
