I am settling in to my apartment in Barcelona and I´m in my third week of classes that I take at the CEA campus, and so far I love it. I like going to school in a big city and the classes are great. It´s been really helpful to have roommates that are my best friends. We have a very nice apartment in the Sant Gervasi neighborhood, but we´re still trying to get to know our way around the rest of the city.

We like to walk around and explore and just let ourselves get lost and see what we find. My favorite place so far is Las Ramblas. I love the people watching and all the little shops and of course, La Boqueria. I still have to make it to the beach! Once I do it may replace Las Ramblas as my favorite place to go. This is the beach in the summer… I can´t wait to see it for myself.

Another thing I´m looking forward to the most is traveling to other palces around Europe. Tomorrow I´m leaving for Interlaken, Switzerland for the weekend and I am SO excited!! My roommates and I are meeting up with one of our best friends who is studying in Florence. We are going to have an exciting reunion for sure! It will be a big party weekend for all of us I´m sure.

Interlaken, Switzerland – September 27th, 2009.

Joey and myself after a late start decide we should take a ride around town and decide to hire some bikes to do a lance armstrong.

We walk around town and checkout bike hire prices. Everywhere is about the same. Pretty expensive if you ask myself. But we end up hiring from the hostel anyway and ask the guy where to go and we get sent up along a river to Lauterbrunnen.

We head on up through a few towns on a pretty flat road. Its easy going and we pelt it along. That is til we get to a hill, and even though we have gears on our bike its pretty hard to get up.

Impersonating Lance Armstrong - Bag Sweat and all.

Anyway its only a short hill and we’re coasting down a gravel path along a small river for ages. We cannot really complain about the scenery. Its typically swiss. Gorgeous.

Riding my bicycle.

We stop by the river for a quick drink/refresh break. Its quite serene, even with the road on the other side of the river.

Not a bad pit stop.

We make it into Lauterbrunnen and are majorly puffed, with a mass amount of good ol bag sweat. I haven’t done this much exercise for a long time. But its definitely good. We find the nearest general store and grab some food to eat whilst discussing what to do next.

Lauterbrunnen.

After a cruise around town we head to Trummelbach Falls which is another 4kms away – the good thing is its reasonably flat and easy ride.

Trummelbach Falls

Unfortunately when we get there its 11CHF to get in, and I don’t have that money on me, so Joey heads in for a wander with my camera and I stay out by the gate and chill.

We then head back up to Lauterbrunnen, after going through, we decide to take the road way instead. And it seriously only takes us about 30 minutes and we’re literally flying down. I end up losing Joey so I wait for him and realise I’ve taken the wrong path oops. But I head back and catch up with him.

We punch our way into Interlaken and into the hostel, with yours truly taking out the yellow jersey. Unfortunately we’re both paying for the ride and have riders ass in a massive way.

After a shower, and a quick stop to grab food, and head back to cook up a storm. And a few deserving beers. Whilst we try to make some plans for the next day – Joey has decided to save coin by seeing his parentals. And I’m – well haven’t decided. So I play it by ear and just chill whilst watching a movie or two. I go for a wander through the club but thats dead and head to bed.

Interlaken – September 26th, 2009.

So we’re up as late as possible for a bit of a shitty breakfast. I barely touch mine. Theres a fair group of us going on a bit of a hike through the swiss country side today. So all of us gather in the beer garden and wait for those slower starters.

We head on down to the station – and get to the coop for a brief fuel stop and to get some lunch time tucker.

One of the group gets a discount on the train so we all follow and get one. Sweet. We head on down to Lauterbrunnen. Before jumping on another train up to Wengen. We then hop off and figure out our path to the top.

Looking back down into the valley from the train.

We decide to take this route along the edge of a cliff and then around the bottom of Jungfrau and to Kleine Scheidegg which is a massive walk. We head off and its all plain sailing. All flat. Its a good nice stroll. The scenery is stunning and it makes the walk much easier.

Flat, and a path! Not for long.

That is until we hit the massive S-bends in the hill that are massively steep. Its a good hard slog. Lots of bag switches and lots of bag sweat. It was fairly disgusting. And we finally get to a lookout. On the edge of the cliff. Thats at least 500m to the valley below.

We get to the point – and instead of getting the train. We head higher and go to Kleine Schieidegg which is one of the last stops before Jungfrau on the train. Its a little over 2000m high. But its a damn good slog to get up there. All up it took about 5 hours! Definitely worth it though. With the price of everything in Interlaken so expensive – walking and hiking the mountains is one of the cheapest options you can do.

We go wait for a train. And do the obligatory ride the swiss bull photo. Before jumping on the train to grindelwald and well I fall asleep for most of it. Which sucks but is also very good.

We then walk back, sorely, to the hostel, where we are just happy to see that the beer garden is open and cooking food. We all splash out on a well deserved burger with beer. It goes down pretty well.

The rest of the night is pretty chilled out. Its just a lazy night as the walk took out most of our energy. I do venture downstairs for a bit but its not exactly doing myself any favours.

Interlaken – September 25th, 2009.

We get up early. Grab our free breakfast – which is pretty ordinary. Not that nice. But hey its free. We then go down to the adventure sports store to try and change our tour. We were told the 8 hour one is a blast. So we want to try to change to that. But there isn’t one running so we do the 5 hour instead.

We head back and wait for the guy to come pick us up. Joey and myself talk about the adventures that occured overnight. Hammocks were involved apparently. And things get a little more awkwarder once the rest of the canyoners join us. haha

We go to the Adventure sports place and get given all our stuff – wetsuits, helmets, harness and shoes. And then pile in the van for our trip to the canyon which takes about 30 minutes or so.

Getting our gear.

We stop at the bottom and get changed and chuck our stuff into the back of the trailer. Then pile in and head to the canyon site. First stop, and we’re on a road in the middle of nowhere. And met with a 50m cliff.

Danger!

Our guide then tells us where about to walk down this thing. Abseiling down it. The guide asks if anyone has done this before. And everyone points to me (as I said I did in Slovenia) so the guide then grabs my harness and locks me in. Bastards. I suppose its good to get it out of the way. The trip down isn’t too bad til it gets past vertical.

Halfway down the rapel.

After everyone has come down we then head down into the canyon to the first jump. Its only a small jump. Maybe 3-5m in height. And he asks me to go first again. Which is fine. The guide tells me where to jump into. I don’t hesitate and just go for it. The jump is fun. The landing is fine. The water is freezing.

Jump.

We make our way further into the canyon and come to our first slide. He basically holds us and then lets us go. The slide is fine, what I didn’t realise was the fact there was a drop at the end which scared the shit out of me. haha.

Slide and fall.

We head on down further and come to the biggest jump of the canyon. Its either a 6m jump or you can climb up to a 10m jump. Off a little platform barely the size of my feet. The jump itself is amazing – we try to go again but they wont let us.

10m leap.

Another slide and we’re near to the zip line. Which basically we hold onto and then let go and drop into a pool. A lot of fun with this one.

Zippidy DooDaa

We then get a few group shots before making our way out of the canyon. The last one we do is a jump to a rock before a slide. One of the girls got freaked out and our guide got the shits and basically said we werent doing that. So we go nah nah we’re gonna do it and joe steps up and does it first – with a loud thud onto the rock. We all follow and its pretty fun.

The Canyoning Gang.

We exit the canyon and then get changed out of our gear and have some cheese, bread and beers and chat to everyone. We then jump in and head back to Interlaken.

We wait around to view the photos and theres this little little bike that we decide to play on before heading back to the hostel. We then chill out in the hammock room and laze for the arvo.

I'm joining the circus!

We grab some food and beer from the coop store and come back. Cook up a feast, drink some beer and then hit the beer garden up. We catch up with everyone from last night and apparently theres a competition on. So we all sign up to win an adventure activity of your choice.

The night gets lose. We chill out in the beer garden. Before going down and getting on the sticky sticky dance floor with 2 for 1 drinks and the place packed full of people it ends up being a fairly good night.

We wake up and Marco’s gone to work. So Joey and I start to get packed and organized to leave. One of Marco’s mates is gonna take us to the train station over the border in Switzerland. Marco’s mum is an absolute champion and washed our clothes. I don’t think my clothes have been this clean nor soft. Amazing. It won’t last long but its most appreciated.

We get driven over the border and hop on a train to Zurich, then onto another train to Bern. And then one last train to Interlaken. Yup 3 trains but it doesn’t take that long. The good thing about swiss trains is that they are always on time. The bad thing – the cost its a bloody fortune!

The best way to pass travelling time - sleep!

We arrive at Interlaken and make our way to Balmers to check in to the hostel. We get to the room and think oh fuck this sucks. A quick check of emails and then we head off down the road to check out town. We’re stunned to see a hooters here. We then stop off at an adventure centre to book into Canyoning for tomorrow. We book into the 5 hour canyon trip.

We then head back, shower and have some dinner at the beer garden. Where we have a good burger and fries with a free beer. Goes down a treat. We end up hanging out and drinking beer in the beer garden. We meet a few champion people (Rory, Cassie, Julia, etc) and end up drinking to the close of the beer garden.

We’re then told to either go to our rooms or downstairs to the bar. We go to the bar as they have 2 for 1 drinks on. It as you expect gets rather messy. And its another late night breaking out moves on the d-floor and trying to get back into the dorm room.

1/28/09

The re-cap began at 1:03 A.M. It’s probably much later by now.

THE TRAIN STATION.

Woke up at 7 A.M. Checked out of our hostel in Paris. Had to catch the train by 9. Realize the train is full. Can ride the first-class train at 1 for shit-tons of Euros, or wait for the 3 P.M. one. Opt for the latter. The train station is as cold as an Eskimo’s toe. Without wool socks. Is that racist? I mean, is “wool” still P.C.? Bought a very cool, very thick French magazine about fashion and culture to keep myself occupied. There were English descriptions of things next to the French ones. Thank God. Drank espresso and ate a croissant filled with chocolate. Smoked a cigarette. Took a shit in the water closet for .50 Euro. Quickly getting over my shitting-in-public phobia on account of necessity. Read. Went to a café that had small space-heaters to warm us up. It didn’t help much. Was shocked by the amount of pigeons indoors, eating discarded baguettes. Saw one pigeon with a hurt foot. Claw? Talon? Got a little sad. Ate a ham and cheese baguette and drank an Orangina for lunch. The drink tasted like watered-down 7-Up with a splash of O.J. Read more. Smoked more cigarettes. Had a double Johnny Walker Red on the rocks at noon. At least I waited ‘til noon. The server called me a boy and he a girl. That’s right, drink like a real man. Read more. Smoked more cigarettes. Waited…

And waited…

Ate a chocolate banana tart of some sort. Smoked. Shat again. Jesus, at this point, I had spent 1.00 Euro total…for poo! Finally boarded the train. Tried to sleep. Couldn’t. Wasted 6.00 Euros on a bagel that turned out to have god damn salmon on it. Felt sick. Trains. Reading. More reading.

WELCOME TO SWITZERLAND.

Finally we arrived in Interlaken, Switzerland. After 14 hours. Nice place. In the middle of nowhere, but nice. Went for a walk. Snow on the ground. Hooters is directly across the park from our hostel. Found a discotheque. Talked to a couple cute Swiss girls about the happenings of Interlaken. One told me the disco is “clo-zed” today, but open tomorrow. Did laundry. Praise Baby Jesus. I finally have clean underwear and don’t have to keep washing them in the sink. Yes, it happened. May go skiing tomorrow. Then dancing.

Saw on TV tonight one of those late-night GIRLS, GIRLS, GIRLS ads. Full on tits. Butts. Blow-jobs and vibrator-masturbation with tiny black strips over the cash ‘n’ prizes. Tiny.

I think I love Switzerland.

Adventure awaits…and so do my now-dry underwear.

Day 1 at Interlaken

Interlaken is perhaps the place which attracts most tourists in Switzerland. Its a not-to-be-missed tourist spot and the only place to hit if you are a first timer in Switzerland and short on time. Interlaken, as some might guess, means between lakes. Interlaken is located between Lake Brienz to the east and Lake Thun to the west in the area called Bödeli.

View of one of the lakes

Since we had turned in pretty late night the previous day, we started around mid-morning for Interlaken. However, this was not good as we risked not getting tickets for train to Jungfraujoch – Europe’s highest peak and highest train station. And if the train was missed, there really was no way for us to get up there. And so it happened!

Enroute to Interlaken

We hit Jungfraujoch train station at around 1:30 pm. The parking lot was FULL and it was an indication that we might be in trouble. Except BIL, the rest of us quickly made our way to the platform and I rushed to the ticket counter, only to be told that the max limit for the tickets for that day had been reached and they closing booking for the day. Already some 5000+ people had made their way to the top! BIL joined me sometime later, and given the situation, we started exploring options to see some of the mid-way stations; not very exciting but then options were limited. And then a miracle happened. It can’t be anything else, as out of the blue the ticket attendant tells me that just then a few cancellations happened and 6 tickets were available for the 2:10 pm train. The time then was 1:55 pm!

Hurraaaaaayyyyyy! We purchased the tickets and rushed to the boarding platform and off we were to see the highest peak in Europe! By the way, just a mention the the tickets were out-of-the-world-expensive…they cost us about 960 francs which is around 650 pounds! and that is damn expensive!

The train journey was to take about an hour and half with stops in two stations midway – Lauterbrunnen and Eismeer.

In the train - Honey had loads of fun

Well not much to write about the train journey per se. But what is extremely impressive is the infrastructure created by the Swiss. It was obvious when we visited Mt Titlis, but this was even more impressive. Our Himalayan ranges are still mostly inaccessible to the ordinary individual (and I mean unathletic) and one cannot fathom how people like mine or anybody’s else’s old parents can get to see the Himalayas. But here , we had an impressive railway track laid all the way upto 11000 ft, twisting and winding and passing through tunnels cut through the mountains.

As we ascended, it was starting to get real cold and we had to get out our warm clothes..here below is the Eismeer station inside the tunnel and it was pretty cold …

At Eismeer Stn ..and its getting colder

There was a viewing station available at this station and we had breathtaking views of the Swiss side of the Alps …

Finally, at the end of the 1 and 1/2 hr journey, we were at Jungfraujoch!

The entire infra, walkway etc has been carved through a huge mountain rock..take a look -

Back from the snow, we visited an ice cave – with ice exhibits. It was extremely cold inside and the floor was a little too slippery for comfort …

Inside the ice cave

Around 5ish we decided to call it quits from that place and caught the train back to the base station . . .

Back at the base

On the way back, we caught dinner at a Pakistani restaurant in the nearby neighbourhood. As we were leaving Interlaken, dusk was setting in creating a mesmerising atmosphere at the lake where we stopped for some time.

Beautiful Dusk Setting

Technically, our stay in Switzerland as per the planned itinerary had come to an end. We were to check out the next day, but then we could not come to a consensus on where we wanted to go next. There was not enough time to undertake another city as the day after next, we had to catch the ferry back to UK. In the end, we decided to spend an extra day in Interlaken.

Day 2 at Interlaken

After a leisurely start to the morning, we completed the checkout and headed to Interlaken again. Given that we could not spend enough time at the lakes the previous day, today’s plan was to spend an easy-going afternoon at the lakes.

First lake that we visited

This lake was by the side of a small forest and also had a small trail. There were benches on the banks, and we took the opportunity to stop and have lunch here. We spent a hour here eating, taking walks along the banks and taking photos ….

. . . and I tried capturing the lake from different angles

From a corner

Around 3ish, we left for the second lake, and this was even more beautiful …

As we stood on the banks, this was the most serene spectacle

Quite a few families were picknicking here ….and as one of my friends commented, this was a favorite passtime for the Swiss, where the full family would get together and picnic at lakes like this one ….there was even a stone T.T. table there ….guess they would call it ping-pong here…

The kids had lot of fun here taking dips in the water. Harshita is a complete water baby, and Honey, though adventurous in the beginning, chickened out later … guess the cold got to him finally . . .

The kids having mega - fun . . .

Honey after his water games!!

. . . and then finally it was time to bid adieu to Switzerland, as we had a 4-hour drive to Strasbourg ahead . . .

Packing up . . .

On the way back, we stopped in Basel to grab something for dinner …indian ofcourse. The drive to Strasbourg was mostly uneventful, except when we actually needed to find the hotel where we had booked for the night stay. It became a little bit of a struggle to find the hotel and language barriers weren’t really helping….finally somehow we managed to find the place ……and crash…it was another late night and after the long drive everyone was quite exhausted. We had another 4-5 hours drive to Calais ahead of us the next day ….we were catching the 3:30 pm ferry to Dover to bring our soujourn to this part of Europe to a close . . .

If Paris is an art, museum and history connoisseurss’ paradise, Switzerland is a nature lover’s haven. We had a splendid time in both these places, and as this leg of journey came to end, we were left longing for even more….and we pledged to actually come once again ..but this time just to Switzerland and spend an entire week here! The image of a house in the countryside, a cool chill in the air, farmers tilling the field, and the sun setting in the background still lingers on . . .
