Yea, as you must have guessed from the title of this post, what follows is kinda a story, but a real one! What else could be a better way to get started with the blog!

Third year! Intern fight! fight fight fight!
Especially if you are trying one in foreign univ, all the funny things that one ends up doing, right from BCCing the mails to “Dear Sir/Madam, I am interested in ‘your’ field of interest.”

Okay, so, luckily I got to watch one such intern fight very closely, owing to the fact, one, he stays in the neighboring room, second, his passwords are public property. So, let me introduce you to Gaurav (Name changed to protect the identity till Valfi ), ‘THE ghati’. Number of ‘hours’ this person spends in the hostel in a semester are probably even lesser than the number of ‘days’ any other ghati would be in the hostel in a semester. and hence, in general, no fundae of hostel life or what people are up to or anything equivalent.

On one fine day in September, this person realizes that Germany is the country he always wanted to be in and decides to SPAM to any extent to bag an intern in Germany. His love towards Germany was so great, that he was even ready to accept a boot-polish intern or a waiter intern! Yes, he said so, this despo! Intelligent sources have confirmed that such an affection towards Germany was actually attributed to its neighbors like Amsterdam.

Here is a glimpse of number of funny things he did,

1. Made a database of more than 100 professors and didn’t mail even a single till November.

Reason: “Waiting for Diwali, planning to send senti mails and Diwali wishes to Indian profs. They get nostalgic, I get intern! Also thinking to write things like, Sir, I’ll bring papad, pickle for you. My mom makes delicious laddus and chakali too.”

2. Mails included text, “Sir, I am from a poor country, please give me funding!”
I mean what’s that!

3. Put a Read receipt to each and every mail he sent.
Already, these profs don’t open mails with ‘internship’ in the subject. I don’t know why the hell, they’ll proceed to read the mail if prompted like, “The sender wishes to confirm that you’ve read the mail, do you wish to send the receipt and continue?”!

4. When it came to issue of funding, he pointed to DAAD, as though, in a style, “My Da(a)d’s gonna pay me!”.
Well, I’ve observed, almost everybody looks at it the same way these days and end up accepting any crap university.

5. and then after such loads of spam, there he received the much awaited first non-trivial reply!
Prof had said, “We accept internships for minimum of 4 months. Hence No.”
As far as my spamming expertise goes this is merely a softer version of straightaway saying No.

The great Gaurav’s first reply to this was fairly genuine,
“Sir, I won’t be able to come for 4 months, since my vacation is only for 3 months. Sir, I assure you I will work very hard, to complete the work in 3 months. Please take me.”
Prof again replies saying No.

The great Gaurav is now infinte despo and replies,
“Sir, if you wish I will bring another person with me! We’ll both work and finish of the work in 2 months. This way your work is getting done and that too very early. Since, you are not funding, I guess number of people should not be an issue for you as such.”

and this is not all,
meanwhile he caught another despo friend of his,
and told him that this way he could give him intern,
but on a condition, “See. One has to fight real hard to get an intern. Because of me, you’re getting it without any fight. So, I fought for intern. You’ll fight in intern! I will just rest and roam around the whole of Europe.”

Yeah, human brain is this marvelous!
I don’t know what the prof thought, but ran away and never replied back.

6. Then next was the height!
One night before the endsem! 2 AM . All tired of mugging for the next paper!
I randomly open Gaurav’s GPO (my favorite pass-time to open others’ accounts ) , to find a mail from some new German!!

Mail had said, ” Hey, I have a lots of lots of data on ECGs, charts of more than 2000 heart patient. So, I can create any number of projects for you. If you wish, I can even give you projects even when you go back to your country. I will arrange for an apartment for you near my hospital. I have been to India 3 years ago and India is a damn good country. Awaiting your reply, Dr. so and so, MD”

Shocked. All people mugging in the room threw the books away, started looking at each other in a shock.
First, “Awaiting your reply”? I guess, this is something which we write in our mails to profs!
Second, Doctor, MD, heart patients, hospital, ECGs, what’s going on? This guy is in electrical and why the hell applying to the profs in med school. Weird! Real weird!
Google searched the prof! Found his homepage! He was indeed an MD and visiting prof in some univ. Still weird!
Then we realized his homepage was in German and a hopeless person like Gaurav would never do so much work to translate his page and find out what field the person works in. This was a new kind of SPAM. Email-id spam! You give me email-id I’ll spam, I don’t care whose it is!
We did check in sent mails, yea, it was indeed “I am interested in ‘your’ research”.
Second thought, isn’t the prof also too weird not to check that the person is from Electrical and not bio or med. Is he in so much love with India?
-:Laughter in that room for half an hour:-

and all this, Mr. Gaurav hadn’t checked that mail. We waited till next day, for him to do that and surprisingly he was very happy. As expected, he didn’t know whom he had applied to. He was like, ” Even if he takes me as a ward-boy, that’s fine! Afterall, he’s giving me Germany!!” Now, what to call this, this is something beyond just being Intern-Despo. Height!

Luckily though, everything turned out to be sane. Doc gave him some elec-related project.

7. Now begins the DAAD funding fight.
To start of with right from filling up the form, Gaurav pained people with questions like what is my academic title, is it Dr. or Prof. or so on. Also, he did ask what’s his name, whether it is ABC or BAC or CAB or so on.
This is exactly what I don’t like about JEE, it admits useless people, who cannot even independently answer such stupid questions.

8. Yeah, now came the Reco.
Mr. Gaurav intelligently chooses to go to the most sadist prof of the department!!
Prof was incidentally setting our endsem paper for next day, throws him out for half an hour.
But the despo Gaurav returns,
Prof: “If I give you reco, it’ll hurt your chances of getting a scholarship and it won’t hurt me. So, my sincere advice to you is not to reco from me.”!!
and last was the punch line, ” Do you still want it?”. Gaurav ran out of the office for his life.

9. Finally, the application is ready, but just 2 days before the deadline, with endsems still not ended.
Mr. Gaurav takes another great decision, “I don’t trust courier services. I am going to Delhi myself and I will go by train”!!
I mean, what’s that? There are courier services which make sure that the parcel flies before next afternoon! and this person going to Delhi himself, that too by train and that too by 4.30pm train, while his endsem ends at 5.30pm. What a master-plan!
Finally he got a warning from his home that he is not going anywhere and everything went in a sane manner.

So, Yeah, that brings me to today! He just couriered everything yesterday night. I am sure Mr. Gaurav will continue doing such insane things, giving me stories to write. He’s currently hooked on to daydreaming nurses in his prof’s hospital!

and of course, he was just one such sample, the internship desperation makes people really weird and it’s indeed fun most of the times! On a more mature note, it’s Good, Bad and Ugly too.

Bottle Shock (2008)
★★ / ★★★★

I decided to watch this movie because I was interested to learn more about one of the landmarks of the wine industry (even though I don’t know much about wine). That is, the creation of the perfect Chateau Montelena chardonnay. Alan Rickman stars as Steven Spurrier, the owner of Academie du Vin, who traveled to the United States in order to collect wine for the Judgment of Paris wine competition. One of the places he visited was Chateau Montelena which was owned by Jim Barrett (Bill Pullman), a man who was buried in loans and frustration with the fact that his son (Chris Pine) failed to show interest or enthusiasm when it came to the family business. The weaker and less interesting part of the film was the romance triangle among a Hispanic worker (Freddy Rodriguez) in Chateau Montelena, a new intern (Rachael Taylor), and Jim’s aimless son. Another negative was that even though the story was supposed to be set in 1976, it didn’t feel like it was because of both the actors and the script. That sense of authenticity was important to me because I really wanted to be sucked into the time period. I also felt as though the picture played everything a bit too safe. With each scene everything just felt nice and breezy instead of revolutionary, which is a problem because the core of the movie was how the events in the vineyard impacted the wine industry. Randall Miller, the director, should have taken more risks instead of resting on the romance between the three younger characters. In fact, I think the movie would’ve been better off if about thirty minutes were cut off because it would have been more focused and the pace wouldn’t have felt as slow. Still, I don’t consider “Bottle Shock” a bad movie because there were moments of true wonder for the audiences, especially when the wine suddenly changed from clear to brown. I had no idea whether that was a positive or a negative thing prior so I certainly learned something from the film. And the exciting competition scene was quite amusing because the French judges tried so hard to discern which wines were from France and which ones were from the United States. The looks on their faces after the competition was priceless.

To give this project a challenge, it had to be pushed in less than twenty-four hours. This wasn’t too difficult a challenge but I do appreciate when I have at least a forty-eight hour window.

Lately I have been working on a few webpage concepts for the Radioactive Energy Drink. I have created a set of six designs over the past three-and-a-half weeks. Each set was designed in Photoshop with a final copy as both JPG and PNG files. I did not find anything task too difficult while designing these concepts. I take that back; I did have a compression issue. I am not able to compress the raw PSD file small enough to send via email. However, the JPG and PNG files were sent with ease. Now it is a matter of waiting for client approval.

t2:Echo – by Henry Daniel

Due to the fact that my schedule was quite full this past weekend along with the fact that I get quite severe motion sickness from watching 3D movies, ride films and IMAX movies, I was not able to see most of the presentations that were shown at this year’s Interactive Futures conference at Emily Carr. That being said, the one performance that I was able to see in at least some form was t2:Echo by Henry Daniel.

While I was not able to see the entire performance, due to the fact that the concourse gallery walls that were blocking my seeing most of the actual dancers’ performances. On top of this, I was also helping direct the audience members to their respective locations, facilitating their viewpoints and actively going to get benches for more vertically challenged people to stand on.

By positioning the dancers in two separate yet interlinked locations, the director was able to create a bridge between the performances. This was further articulated by the video coding and processing for telepresence technology that was used to create the concurrent ghosting effect that was seen on the wall of the ECUAD concourse gallery and the main display screen in the IDS Motion Capture studio.

The ghosting effect that was projected onto the concourse gallery wall showed the dual performances and interlaid them onto one another and provided a somewhat random video playback quality as each dancer took centre stage in front of the crowd. They also entered the stage from multiple entry points and once their rotation in each location was complete, they then ran either to or from the concourse gallery and IDS MoCap studio in order to continue their respective performances there.

I have never seen a live dance performance like this before and it was quite the sight to see, as the dancers themselves were able to glide through the space with the greatest of ease and truly encompass it. From what I could see, it was a beautiful and creative bridging of technology and human performance into a multi-faceted co-locative art piece and would enjoy seeing more performances by Henry Daniel and his accompanying dance troupe.

Being a current graduate student interning at RCASA, I knew September would bring the usual introduc

Being a current graduate student interning at RCASA, I knew September would bring the usual introduction into a new school year, new settings, and new classes. However, this time included my first experience at a therapy site in relation to the Clinical Psychology track in my program. I was feeling comfortable and confident coming into the meetings, having been in the field for a while and having already spent a year working at a Domestic Violence agency, which required a similar type of training. However, this was a more informative and exciting training that I had ever expected, and I am partially talking about Corey this time.

The trainings helped me to understand the depth and the core of the issue of sexual assault. It was something that no previous experience in the domestic violence realm or any class or textbook could explain to me as powerfully as Corey and her many helpers did, her team of educators. I thought I had an idea of what the issue of sexual assault meant and what it meant to me as a future interning therapist, but I was wrong.

Beginning with the training and continuing into what I am doing today, RCASA has taught me a lot. Whether you are in the field or just looking to do some volunteer work, this is an experience that will fulfill you in multiple ways. The skills and tools you will learn will not only help you in your RCASA role, but will help you to better deal with your everyday life and maybe even help your friends to cope at times! Active listening, understanding, and empathy are skills that will better anyone’s life and the relationships you maintain. Working with these skills to do what you can to help another human in a crisis situation is only the current frame of skills you will learn in training.

Coming into Corey’s trainings with an open mind is the best thing to can do to help yourself most clearly understand what the issue at hand is and what RCASA is about. She has a special way about helping one to understand the gravity of the situation, while making the trainings a time to be thoughtful and thankful. Thankful that you are currently in a position to be able to offer your own special form of help. It is a special talent that Corey has, to be able to take a subject that is so heavy, yet inspire you to want to do all that you can to help anyone and everyone who comes across your path.

All weekend, I was a wreck. I was feverously prepping for my interview with Alyssa, the head of the Page Program, that took place this morning. What if she didn’t like me, what if I didnt make a good impression… the what if’s were plaguing my all night long, hence the coffee addiction haze that I am in while writing this current post.

Leaving my desk at Studio 7E at 945 for the 14th floor, I made my way down to the west bank elevators and went up… here goes nothing.

Entering the studio, I saw a room full of pages, working diligantly at their desks, frazzled yet.. empowered. They were doing what so many young people like myself would kill for the opportunity to do. Oh how I want to be frazzled!

Turning the corner, I immediately meet Alyssa, who greets me with a warm smile. I realize then and there that I was nervous for nothing! After having a long conversation with here about her experience with the program, the ins and outs of what will be expected, and where the interview process will go from here, I know this is what I want.

“Alyssa… may I be honest with you?”

“Of course,” she says, with a slight bit of hesitation.

“I know this is what I want to do. I know that NBC is it, where I belong, and I know that I want to be a page.”

It may have been a bit blunt for the first meeting, but I could not contain the words in my mouth. It was the truth.

“Great”, she said, to my suprise and delight. “I’ll definitely be putting your name at the top of the list for the next round of interviews.”

Leaving her office, for this first time in my young career, I felt a feeling that I have never felt before. Confidence. While my other interviews I had left always feeling uneasy, I had a very good feeling about this one. I have a very strong feeling that becoming a page is my path…. and I’m definitely going to take it!
