The second visit of the day, of which I promised to talk about yesterday, was truly great. In contrary to the morning visit, the circuit that takes you from the Cathedral (Sé) to Ribeira is one I know well, but it seems I still had a lot to find out!

This time the guide was an architect whose name is António Moura. From 1975 he worked in the urban renewal of the area from Sé to Ribeira in projects developed for that effect, first by the government and later by the city. Owing to that, there was the opportunity of learning a bit more from the contemporary history of this city I love so much, but that I haven’t been exploring for long…

Porto is a merchant’s city that earned its living from the commercial exchanges to which Douro’s quay in Ribeira was of the utmost importance. Thus, the city grew from there. With time, boats and traffic got bigger and, due to the difficult shape of the port’s entrance, many shipwrecks occurred. That’s when the project of Leixões’ port started taking shape. It was opened on 1938 and Douro’s port started to lose its traffic till in the 1960s it was shut down. That brought revolt and degradation to Ribeira, with organized groups of inhabitants making it difficult for any intervention in the area. After the 25th April 1975 (when the Portuguese dictatorship fell) the inhabitants with worst conditions were relocated to a social neighbourhood, what made it possible to start the urban renewal project I’ve mentioned before. This project refurbished the houses, offering them previously nonexistent conditions, like toilets…As it was aimed for the local inhabitants, who after the renewal would return home and who pay very low rents, in 2003 the political power decided the project had to stop, as it didn’t bring any financial return. We weren’t able to get into any of the houses ’cause we were a big group, but the guide told us he wouldn’t have mind keeping a few houses for himself!

The circuit of the area took us to several places and brought many stories, that I think may be a bit boring to read in a blog. Even more because I was to interested in what was being said during the tour, I kind of forgot to take pics, so there aren’t many to help me illustrate it…

I’ll leave you a list of the places and the few photos I shot. Cathedral (stories of French Invasions and hidden treasures), The Association of Portuguese Architects (where the 1st archeological findings from before the Romans in the city were found), Casa Museu de Guerra Junqueiro, Paço Episcopal (bishop’s house – not open to the public, only in special occasions), Grilos’ Church (stories of the city’s hierarchies involving religious orders and stories about Marquês de Pombal and the Távoras), Palácio das Artes, Ferreira Borges’ Market (a copy of Les Halles in Paris), Casa do Infante (architectonic curiosities and stories about kings). Once more I tell you, when you visit these places in my company, ask me for the stories…

This year I’m discovering a bunch of days I didn’t know existed. First it was the Nation

This year I’m discovering a bunch of days I didn’t know existed. First it was the National Day of Historic Centres, today the International Day of Monuments and Places…Due to it, today I could participate in two guided tours of the city of Porto. Today I’ll tell you about the one in the morning and for tomorrow I’ll save the best of the day.

The tour was dedicated to the wall that limited the city in D. Fernando’s (king of Portugal) era and the guide was an art historian. It wasn’t a greatly informative tour, but it took me to places where I rarely go or where I’ve never been. The circuit was made through the places where the wall is or used to be.

The visit started in the best kept part of the wall, next to the old building of Instituto Ricardo Jorge, where, for my amazement, you can walk on the wall and have wonderful views of the city sights. We continued through R. da Madeira till S. Bento’s train station and kept on till Cadeia da Relação and R. das Taipas, where, if you pay attention, you can see bits of wall between the houses.

This detail takes me to my first big discovery of the day! The houses in this area (and other areas where the wall existed) were built using the wall as one of their 4 façades. For that reason, those are the places where the wall is at its purest state, but it’s hidden between the houses which used it as their façades, you can only see it by ringing the bell…and we didn’t do it in this visit.

The visit continued with a stop in a centre of social assistance in R. das Virtudes, where we once more had great views of the city and could see a bit of the wall. We kept going until Ribeira, where the wall exists and is where the river stops.

Here, a little stop for a bit of history. The wall’s destruction was mostly done in the time of the Almadas, who had the plan of opening up the streets and squares of the city, like Marquês de Pombal had done in Lisbon. To note that Marquês de Pombal benefited, or took advantage, the destruction brought about by 1755 earthquake. One of the Almadas’ project was to make a square similar to Terreiro do Paço (Lisbon) in Pça do Cubo. The rain didn’t let me take pictures to the details that show that, so ask me to show them to you when we go there together.

The end of the tour was basically to come back to the starting point, i.e., to walk all the way up again!!! We did it through Escadas dos Guindais.

This and the next posts will illustrate this description with photos.

Este pormenor leva-me à primeira grande descoberta do dia!
