Billed as Europe’s first “personalised paper”, “niiu”, a newspaper tailored to readers’ individual wishes and delivered to their door before 08:00 am, made its first appearance in Berlin on Monday. Customers of the paper choose what topics they want to read about – be it sport, politics, fashion or any from a wide choice – and receive news only on their chosen subject collated together and delivered like any other paper. Articles are pulled together from major German papers such as Handelsblatt, Bild and Tagesspiegel, foreign titles such as the International Herald Tribune or the New York Times, as well as major blogs and Internet news sources. For the right to print their news, “niiu” pays a licence to these papers, which in turn reach a younger audience, as “niiu” is aimed mainly at students, who pay EUR 1.20 (USD 1.79) to get their news fix. Non students are expected to stump up EUR 1.80. The two German entrepreneurs who came up with the idea were delighted with their first day in business, having launched the concept in mid-October. The pair hopes to be printing 5,000 copies in the next six months, first in Berlin before rolling it out nationwide. Eventually, clients will be able to choose the length of the paper delivered — for example, eight pages on a busy Monday morning but 60 pages on a Friday when there might be more time to read. Initially, however, the paper consists of 16 pages

That’s what IMG and The International Herald Tribune are trying to prove, anyway. Tomorrow and Wednesday, IMG and the IHT’s Suzy Menkes are hosting the annual luxury conference (this year’s title: Techno Luxury), which will feature speakers like Christopher Bailey, Frida Giannini, Claus-Dietrich Lahrs, and Alain Dominique-Perrin, from Burberry, Gucci, Hugo Boss AG and Compagnie Financière Richemont, respectively.

It’s IMG’s first time to jump on board as both host and sponsor for the event (they normally stick to Fashion Week-y things), which this year is being held at The Ritz Carlton in Berlin, a newbie fashion capital. Past conferences have been held in Moscow, New Delhi, Istanbul, and Dubai.

The conference’s website lists publishers, law firms, brand managers, importers, banks, advertising agencies, designers, fashion houses and communications firms as worthy attendees, so let’s hope they can all come up with something to get even rich people shopping again.

Suzy Menkes, ’s werelds meest invloedrijke modejournaliste, woont in Parijs. Haar columns verschijnen in The New York Times en de International Herald Tribune.

Nazenin Ansati and Jonathan Paris claim that “many in the [Iranian] Green Movement [...] would like to see the international community exert pressure on the regime through a progressive set of smart, vigorous and targeted sanctions and more forceful advocacy of human rights” (“The message from the streets of Tehran“, IHT, Nov 7).

But haven’t “targeted sanctions” against the Iranian regime and a seemingly perennial “advocacy of human rights” been in place for decades? And what would any Iranian internal opposition movement ever gain from associating itself with foreign Powers, given the anti-Western-Governments paranoia widespread among the ruling classes, and the evidence of History suggesting that foreign intervention in Iran has invariably been for the worst?

One of the greatest joys of my Parisian summers was weaving through the warm and crowded streets on

One of the greatest joys of my Parisian summers was weaving through the warm and crowded streets on a Vélib (vélo libre or free bike), pedaling furiously to feel the cool breeze and thinking for the billionth time how lucky I was to live there.

Friends riding velibs through Paris

Although I also owned my own bike, the beauty of this public bike system is that the vélib can be picked up and dropped off anywhere. This gives you the freedom to choose whether or not to ride home depending on how many glasses of rosé have been consumed or whether one’s beribboned shopping bags are too numerous to fill the vélib’s basket.

My own “vintage” bike was also a perilous pile of rust and consequently I loved the stability of the the vélib’s clunky grey frame, the comfortable saddle and its sonorous bell.

It was therefore with some sadness that I read of the tribulations of the scheme in today’s International Herald Tribune (IHT). According to the paper, 16,000 vélibs have been stolen or damaged since the scheme came into operation.

The broken bikes came as no surprise. I had developed my own 4 stage bike check test when choosing a vélib from a station: 1. Kick front and back tire to check for flats; 2. Lift back wheel up and try pedals to check chain; 3. Wiggle the seat to make sure the saddle is not a wobbler (This is a vital step and if not carried out means you’ll be spinning from side to side whilst cycling which feels like a cross between the waltzers and car sickness); and finally 4. Tinkle the bell (not vital but a childish mischievousness means that there is something throughly enjoyable about ringing the bell and pedaling past pedestrians before they have a chance to protest.)

The bikes are bound to suffer from wear and tear. The IHT states that the bikes are used for between 50,000 and 150,000 trips a day.

But the IHT also suggests that the bikes are being vandalized by the underclasses of Paris who see the vélib as a symbol of the “bobos”, the bourgeois-bohèmes, the hip, upper class of Paris. The IHT says that many of the stolen vélibs have been found in the underprivileged neighbourhoods outside of the centre of Paris.

I have always felt uncomfortable about the social makeup of Paris. The centre is extremely wealthy but as soon as you hop over the Péripherique, the ring road that circles Paris, you encounter the poorer suburbs. This marked separation is different to London where social housing is better integrated into communities, take Chelsea or Islington for example. But if it is the case that people from Paris’ suburbs are vandalizing the vélibs, surely they have picked on the wrong target. Vélibs are as socialist as bikes get. They are not for tourists who find the process of taking them out of the stations laborious and desire to rent them for longer than the 30 minutes (the length of the average commute in Paris) for which they are free. Nor are they for the wealthy who probably take taxis. No, they are for Parisians to get around Paris. They are cheaper than the metro, quicker than a bus or taxi during rush hour and an alternative and green form of public transport. Yes there are uncomfortable and unacceptable social divisions in Paris that should not be ignored but leave the vélibs out of it please.

Around 40 million doses of the swine flu vaccination will be available in the United States by mid-O

Around 40 million doses of the swine flu vaccination will be available in the United States by mid-October, reports the International Herald Tribune. As I read the article I remembered reading something in the Egyptian daily Al Masry Al Yawm a few days back about how the first round of shots was being given to kids in China. They reported that there were no side-effects besides the regular vaccination fever that some kids get. Every front page in the Egyptian news these days seems to be concerned with nothing other than H1N1, schools closing… Swine flu this, Swine flu that….But, anyway….

This got me thinking about Egypt. What is our government going to do about these shots?

If the United States is getting 40 million doses in October, how much are we getting and when. This number doesn’t even cover half the Egyptian population. Are we going to get enough shots to give to this huge population? I think not, seeing as the problem here is more than just Swine Flu vaccination. There are things worse than Swine Flu in this country, why is the government not worried about those? Why are we Egyptians not worried about the hygienic conditions of agricultural villages all along the roads between Cairo and Alexandria, or in Upper-Egypt? The answer is simple–we are apathetic to the things that matter and we concern ourselves with the superficial things in society, like rumors and gossip. Yes, us Egyptians love gossip.

I remember being very scared about going home to Alexandria for the weekend. I’d been getting calls all week from friends telling me about several people catching Swine Flu.

“My grandmother just told me that the number of cases rose from 30 to 60 at [Alexandria Sporting Club] in just two days,” my friend told me over the phone.

Others also told me that a friend’s brother, and another’s sister also got the flu.

“Don’t go to the club,” they told us. “Don’t go to the movies, or to malls, or to restaurants.” “Don’t eat out,” my own grandmother yelled one time.

But I have been eating out, going out, spending time with people and hearing the latest rumors, and not one was about anyone catching Swine Flu. If there were really 60 cases in one of the most popular hangouts in Alex, where everybody knows everybody else, wouldn’t we have heard something about it, wouldn’t we have heard of someone close-to-home catching it, and does every feverish kid have to have Swine Flu?

I come from a family of doctors, so I’m sensible when it comes to diseases. I understand that they are real, that we have to take good care of our healths, that we shouldn’t ignore a high fever or an aching stomach. But really why is every doctor I’ve spoken to completely unconcerned and seems to think it’s more of a government ploy than a real threat. Yes, the disease is real. No, it’s not such a huge deal.

My own father, a surgeon, called me from Saudi Arabia, infuriated.. I remember as he told me “It’s all bullshit – if you catch a fever stay home for 4-5 days, take your vitamin C and some Panadol Cold & Flu then go to school again.”

I don’t know why I’m so concerned with this Swine Flu thing, but all the empty propaganda is just getting on my nerves. I just want to understand more, but all I’m getting are words of warning. Not even operators on the government’s swine flu hotline have any data on whatever question you ask them concerned with the disease, even though they are supposed to be the experts since we see their number like 1000 times a day on national and satellite television.

Aren’t there more important things going on in the world and inside this country to worry about than this disease, just check out the front page of any international paper and you’ll see — there are still wars happening out there people. Men, women, and children are dying everyday all over the world, and it’s not swine flu killing them, it’s guns and bombs.

Did anyone stop for a second to wonder how people in Palestine are doing these days while we are so worried about cleaning our Gucci bags, just in case a swine-flu-infected person was around us while we sipped our delicious Caramel Frappucinos at the nearest Starbucks and discussed who broke up with whom this past week and how there’s a new virus in town? I highly doubt it.

Well check this page out if you care!

GARGNANO, ITALY: Before I left I was thinking about the things I would miss the most about New York

GARGNANO, ITALY: Before I left I was thinking about the things I would miss the most about New York, and the first things that came to mind was the print editions of the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal.

Each morning I’ve been away—thus far, two—I wandered around a little nervously until I could get a International Herald Tribune into my hands.

The IHT is, essentially, the foreign edition of the New York Times, which has owned it singlehandedly since it broke some china in late 2002 in order to stop sharing it with the Washington Post. (This has allowed the Times to own 100% of its losses since then, but that’s another story.) But it’s not the same as getting the New York Times. The IHT feels distant. It lacks all urgency. It doesn’t demand your attention—a problem I have with “serious” English-language European newspapers in general. The IHT feels Canadian in its remove from the events in America and elsewhere it describes, even though practically everything in it was written by an American and for an American audience. I have to squint at it really hard to make it resemble the New York Times; it’s the Times through a blurry glass. I don’t think this is just the jetlag talking, either.

Other than that: Italy is beautiful. Immediately after landing in Venice we headed over to Al Covo to talk about natural Italian wines with Al Covo owner Cesare Benelli and his fabulous and hilarious sommelier sommelier pal Mauro Lorenzon. (Lorenzon also writes a blog–hope you can understand Italian–and runs this wine bar where we had a rollicking late dinner. Late for us, at least.)

Yesterday it took Laurel and me several hours to realize it was Saturday, not Sunday.

Dunque cominciamo.

L’on.

L’on.

L’on.

Qualcuno controlli i traffici d’armi. Furono quelli i primi segnali della guerra in Jugoslavia

Debatindlæg bragt i Weekendavisen 11.5.2006

Irina Shabayeva! Project Runway has come to an end, with Irina Shabayeva winning with her “war

Irina Shabayeva! Project Runway has come to an end, with Irina Shabayeva winning with her “warrior women” collection, which she designed, because as she put it, “it’s really tough to be a woman in New York”. Highlight of the show’s finale for me was Suzy Menkas! For those that don’t know, Suzy Menkas is a fashion reporter and editor of the International Herald Tribune. I don’t care what you guys I think – I love her hair! But wait, this isn’t suppose to be about Suzy, it’s about Irina.

Okay, so when I first started watching Project Runway this season, I thought Irina was SUCH a bitch! Do you guys remember that episode in the beginning when she was telling the model how annoying she thought Carol Hannah was?? Whenever I think of Irinia, that’s the scene I remember! She was all “I’m not here to make friends, I’m here to win.” Well, good for her, because that’s exactly what happened.

I would probably hate her and continue to think she’s a bitch if she didn’t seem so incredibly gracious as she won. She acknowledged how stiff her competition was and seemed really genuine. Her dad even started crying! He wasn’t too crazy about her being a designer, but is all about it now that she’s won…aw how beautiful. (I’d be slightly embarrassed if my dad cried on national television because I won a competition…but hey, that’s just me).

Anyway, the runner up Althea Harper was also very sweet and gracious, stating that she “may not have been the winner, but was still a winner”. These girls really had a great attitude, however, I wanted a little more drama from them! C’mon it was 3 girls competing, where was the cattiness?! Anway, all in all, it was a pretty dull season. We’ve definitely seen better from Project Runway, but it’s over now, so until next time…

PS – did ANYONE bother watching “Project Runway – the Models of the Runway”?? What a waste of time!!!!!
