If like some 40% or so of Internet users you are still using Internet Explorer 6 or 7, now might be a good time to upgrade following news of the publication of some nasty exploit code over the weekend. According to Symantec, which has quickly tested the exploit code that appeared on the Bugtraq list at insecure.org, the code as it stands is not 100% reliable but the security researchers expect that a “fully-functional reliable exploit will be available in the near future”. And that means exploit code that will enable websites to be infected, and any IE6 and 7 users with JavaScript enabled to be compromised. The code, as is and however unreliable, has already been shown to work on IE6 and 7 running under Windows XP SP3, although there are no reports of exploits in the wild as of yet. My hunch is that will all change this week as the bad guys will no doubt be working hard over the weekend to rush out attacks before all the security vendors have updated signatures rolled out. Microsoft will, I imagine, be reactive rather than proactive with a patch only being prioritised after such attacks become widespread. The code posted exploits a vulnerability in CSS handling in Internet Explorer 6 and 7, and Symantec advises IE users to only visit trusted sites and disable JavaScript until a Microsoft fix appears. Some might suggest switching to Firefox, but given the number of flaws reported lately upgrading to IE 8 might be a better idea.

You receive the following error when you access a website using Internet Explorer 7 and newer, in my case often internal server http resources.

If it is a web page or resource that you know to be good and you visit it quite often then it makes sense to install the certificate for the resource so that the error message is suppressed on future visits.

Access the web resource that requires the certificate installation

Click on ‘Continue to this website (not recommended)’

Click on ‘Certificate Error’ next to the address bar which in turn displays a ‘Certificates Invalid’ window. Select the ‘View certificates’ link

A ‘Certificate’ properties page appears with the certificate information. Click on ‘Install Certificate’

The ‘Certificate Import’ wizard begins. Click ‘Next’

Allow ‘Windows to automatically select the certificate store’ and click ‘Next’

Click ‘Finish’ once the wizard has completed

This opens a ‘Security Warning’ window to confirm whether you still wish to install the certificate. If you are sure select ‘Yes’

You should receive a confirmation that the certificate import was successful

Click ‘Ok’ on the ‘Certificate Properties’ if it is still open

Reopen the web resource to see if it now opens using the installed certificate and without displaying the certificate error.

Firefox 3 surpasses IE7 in Europe

Firefox 3 has finally surpassed the popularity of Internet Explorer 7 in Europe according to Web analytics firm StatCounter.

Firefox 3 holds 35% and IE 7 has 34% in that region. The decline of IE7 can largely be attributed to the release of IE8. IE 8 has grown to 2.3% in Europe, with most of the users upgrading from IE7. This change is what put Firefox 3 on top.

Firefox market share has already exceeded Internet Explorer in several European countries.

The extremely high reputation of Firefox in Europe raises some questions about the validity of the European Commission’s ongoing investigation on Microsoft’s browser bundling tactics.

Microsoft’s browser is clearly not intractably entrenched in Europe and Mozilla’s success in the region demonstrates that third-party browsers can gain a strong position in the market.

Problema che si verifica con Microsoft Internet Explorer qualunque versione. Presenta l’impossibilità di navigare su internet tramite ie7, viene riscontrato un errore che contiene il seguente messaggio: “Impossibile trovare la chiave di ricerca richiesta nei contesti di attivazione correnti”.

I metodi per risolvere questo problema sono:

1. Disinstallazione di ie e reinstallazione della stessa versione ( ATTENZIONE: non sempre funziona ).
2. Aggiornamento di Internet Explorer alla versione successiva.

Now official, it’s up to the public to test Firefox 3.5 RC2

It’s the third build that was supposed to have been the Firefox release candidate. After some concern about what’s going on, the third time is finally the charm.

Although two (2) “candidates for release candidates” for the next Mozilla Web browser have been released in the past week (with the first being given the weird title “Beta 99″), the official notice of what it’s calling “the Firefox 3.5 Release Candidate” was posted this morning.

Initial Betanews tests of RC2 in Windows 7 show the browser posting essentially the same performance profile as RC1, with a performance index score of 8.85 versus 8.81. But that’s not where it could have been, as last week’s tests of an internal preview build showed a big burst of speed — a 9.35, representing 935% the overall performance of Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 in Windows Vista SP1.

Testers with beta builds of 3.5 will be given automated notices that RC2 is available, and some browsers have likely already downloaded RC2. It’s probably too soon to speculate how many days remain before the final release, and if the last couple of weeks are any indication, speculation is probably a fruitless art anyway. But next Thursday, the organization has scheduled a “Support Firefox Day,” with live community chats and product demonstrations. There, the community will be actively recruiting new product support personnel, all of whom will need to be rapidly educated about new features such as Private Browsing Mode.

Meanwhile, the moment 3.5 does receive final approval, the clock will start for a four-week interval leading to the official release of Firefox 3.6 Alpha 1.

Assuming that you haven’t been won over by IE7’s fabulous clicking sound, you may want to turn it off.

  • Control Panel →
  • Sounds and Audio Devices →
  • Sounds →
  • Select “Start Navigation” in the Program Events selection area →
  • Select your sound of choice (“None”, for example) from the drop down menu below. →
  • Click “OK”

Yesterday, we tried to revise our code in displaying the data from the database to our web application. Last Tuesday, we tried following the video tutorial that was given to us by our supervisor -

We tried using the ObjectDataSource, SqlDataSource and SqlDataReader. But then we had encountered the problem on how to display the employees’ data including their total hours upon clicking the “View All” selection in the drop down button. So yesterday, we scrapped our codes that uses ObjectDataSource, SqlDataSource, and SqlDataReader and used a table in displaying the employee’s data.

Because we have encountered the problem in the Yahoo! calendar’s positioning when viewed in different browsers, we tried checking our web application output both in Firefox and Internet Explorer browser to see if there are bugs like this. As expected, there are flaws in our web application when IE browser is used.

Internet Explorer is the default browser on any out of the box Windows machine. Internet Explorer 6 is the default in XP while Internet Explorer 7 is the default in Vista. Internet Explorer 8 is the newest version and it is by far the best version of Internet Explorer. Unfortunately, like any Windows software, it has it’s share of bugs like the search default provider error.

I have provided some steps in a different post on how to solve the error but if none of the worked you can actually uninstall or remove Internet Explorer 8. Bear in mind that if you uninstall Internet Explorer 8, you would revert back to the default Internet Explorer version of your machine.

Also, it is worth noting that when you upgrade to Windows XP Service Pack 3, you won’t be able to remove Internet Explorer 8. If you need to upgrade to Service Pack 3, remove Internet Explorer 7 or 8 first and then do the upgrade.

Here are the easy steps to remove Internet Explorer 8:

Windows XP

1. Click Start and then go to Control Panel
2. Look for Add/Remove Programs
3. Search for Internet Explorer 8 or Windows Internet Explorer 8, highlight it and then click Remove

Windows Vista

1. Click Start and go to Control Panel
2. Click on Programs and Features and then click on Installed Updates
3. Look for Windows Internet Explorer 8 and click Uninstall

Easy steps and I know you can do it. Let me know if I missed something.

Heute gab es ein Problem bei der Installation des Internet Explorers 7 unter Win XP.

Als Windows Update feststellen musste, dass es den IE7 nicht installieren kann, bot es mir auch gleich Onlinehilfe an. Gut, das ist nett, das nehme ich doch gerne in Anspruch.
Ich war dann doch etwas verwirrt als ich nicht auf einen Knowledge Base Eintrag sondern auf eine Seite mit Telefonsupport Informationen weitergeleitet wurde.

Aber bevor ich ein Angebot über 72 € oder noch besser über 598 € in Anspruch nehme, lasse ich es lieber mit dem IE7 und installiere direkt Firefox oder wenn es doch ein IE sein muss, dann halt die Version 8.
Aber super günstige Support Angebote, haben die Jungs, das muss man Microsoft schon lassen.

Bekomme ich für das Geld direkt einen neuen Rechner? So ein schickes Netbook bitte!
