Firefox se convierte en el primer navegador de Europa central

Firefox sigue atrayendo cada vez más usuarios, y recientemente se han publicado unos datos que seguro darán que hablar en las oficinas de Mozilla. En gráfico que podéis ver sobre estas llíneas indica la cantidad de usuarios de los principales navegadores del mercado en Europa Central. Y sí,Firefox ya acapara más usuarios que Internet Explorer.

Los datos provienen concretamente de la República Checa, Bulgaria, Estonia, Hungría, Lituania, Letonia, Polonia, Rúsia y Ucraina, y comprende el uso desde enero del 2007. Internet Explorer no deja de descender, Firefox asciende al ritmo inverso mientras que Chrome, Safari y Opera empiezan a levantar cabeza con un porcentaje muy inferior.

El gráfico, según la fuente, indica tambien que cada vez más usuarios medios aprenden a instalar sus propios navegadores, lo cual haría disminuir el uso de Internet Explorer (el navegador por defecto en los sistemas de prácticamente todos los computadores).

Kostenlose SSL-Zertifikate, auch für IE

Um verschlüsselte Verbindungen über SSL bzw. HTTPS zu ermöglichen, benötigt man als Server-Betreiber ein SSL-Zertifikat. Diese werden von Zertifizierungsstellen, sogenannten CAs, ausgegeben. Die CA überprüft, ob der Bestellende wirklich berechtigt (also Inhaber der Domain) ist, und stellt dann meist gegen viel Geld das Zertifikat aus. Damit kann sich die Website gegenüber einem Browser “ausweisen” und eine sichere, verschlüsste Verbindung wird möglich. Details gibt es in meinem ausführlichen SSL-Artikel, wo auch noch ein paar Worte über die Sicherheit von SSL stehen.

Nur Zertifikate von CAs, die der Browserhersteller als vertrauenswürdig in den Browser eingebaut hat, werden als gültig erkannt. Deswegen ist es schwierig, eine neue CA aufzubauen, denn die Kriterien für eine Aufnahme sind streng und es gibt viele Browserhersteller, die man zur Aufnahme bewegen muss. Aus diesem Grund gab es bis vor kurzem keine CA, die kostenlos Zertifikate ausgegeben hat und von allen gängigen Browsern akzeptiert wurde. CAcert und StartCom/StartSSL vergeben seit langem kostenlose Zertifikate. CAcert ist jedoch weder in Firefox noch im Internet Explorer als vertrauenswürdig enthalten. Somit kann man CAcert nicht für Seiten benutzen, die von Normalnutzern besucht werden, denn diese würden eine hässliche Sicherheitswarnung erhalten. StartSSL war schon länger in Firefox enthalten, jedoch nicht im Internet Explorer, und war für ernsthafte Nutzung mit unerfahrenen Nutzern daher auch ungeeignet.

StartSSL hat es jetzt aber endlich geschafft, in den Internet Explorer aufgenommen zu werden. Der Internet Explorer akzeptiert die kostenlosen StartSSL-Zertifikate somit seit kurzem als gültig. Dank einer eingebauten Auto-Update-Funktion funktioniert das auch mit veralteten Versionen des IE! Ein IE 6.0 aus meiner Sandbox-VM, Stand Anfang 2008, hat das Zertifikat anstandslos akzeptiert. Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari (inkl. dem iPhone-Browser), Opera, Google Chrome und einige andere akzeptieren StartSSL schon länger, damit sind alle gängigen Browser abgedeckt. (Lediglich Konqueror unter einer aktuellen (K)Ubuntu-Version hatte Probleme damit.) StartSSL ist somit endlich eine voll einsetzbare CA geworden, und somit gibt es endlich kostenlose SSL-Zertifikate für alle! (StartSSL bietet übrigens auch EV-Zertifikate zu relativ humanen Preisen an.)

Als Serverbetreiber muss man übrigens der CA nicht besonders vertrauen (solange man nicht irgendwelche sehr besonderen Sachen macht wie Client-Zertifikate, aber das weiß man dann), wichtig ist nur, dass die Browser die CA akzeptieren. Eine bösartige, aber in Browsern als vertrauenswürdig eingetragene CA kann sich jederzeit für jede Website ein Zertifikat ausstellen lassen, unabhängig davon, ob der Websitebetreiber dort Kunde ist oder nicht. Die eigene CA könnte höchstens das eigene Zertifikat widerrufen und somit ungültig machen, aber mehr auch nicht. Darüber hinaus hat die CA noch ein paar persönliche Angaben, die aber bei einfachen Zertifikaten nicht über das hinausgehen, was die meisten Online-Shops auch wissen. Insbesondere den privaten Schlüssel des Zertifikats hat die CA normalerweise nicht! Es gibt zwar oft die Möglichkeit, die CA diesen Schlüssel generieren zu lassen, aber man kann es auch richtig machen und das selbst tun und den eigenen Schlüssel zertifizieren lassen. Selbst wenn man der CA also aus welchem Grund auch immer nicht vollständig vertrauen sollte, kann man sie als Serverbetreiber dennoch nutzen.

Ich erhalte für diesen Artikel keine Vergütung o.ä. von StartSSL/StartCom. Diesen Artikel habe ich geschrieben, weil es mich ankotzt, dass Firmen für das simple Ausstellen eines einfachen domain-validierten Zertifikats horrende Preise (oft sogar dreistellig!) verlangen, und weil ich froh bin, das es endlich eine kostenlose Alternative gibt und ich auf diese hinweisen möchte. Ich selbst habe von der Aufnahme in den IE auch erst heute erfahren. Nutzt diese kostenlose Möglichkeit, um die Datenübertragung zu euren Webseiten zu sichern! Macht diese Möglichkeit bekannt, damit die kommerziellen CAs ihre überzogenen Preise endlich etwas realistischer machen müssen.

El equipo de Desarrollo de Internet Explorer 9, comenta un poco sobre algunas características en las que Internet Explorer 9 se enfocara;

Progreso de Desempeño: los sitio web, se componen de varios subsistemas. Con la celebración del Microsoft Professional Developer’s Conference en Los Angeles, Microsoft está desvelando los que serán los pilares de su negocio en los próximos meses. Una vez lanzado Windows 7 y tras los buenos resultados obtenidos se centran ahora en su navegador web.

Internet Explorer debe recuperar el terreno que le están comiendo tanto Firefox, Google Chrome e incluso Safari. Hasta ahora, la presencia de otros navegadores no había preocupado a los chicos de Redmond, los datos hablan por si solos, en cinco años Firefox ha obtenido un 25 % de cuota.

El crecimiento de Google Chrome es mucho más rápido y las nuevas funcionalidades que se presumen incompatibles con las versiones actuales de Internet Explorer inquietan bastante a Microsoft. Es por eso que el gigante ha puesto en marcha toda su maquinaria.

Así pues, los primeros detalles anuncian soporte para HTML5; mejoras en Javascript e incluso aceleración por hardware utilizando DirectX y un mejor soporte de los estándares CSS, presumiblemente CSS3.

Además desde Los Angeles no se oculta que su modelo a seguir es el de Safari, ya que si consiguen fidelizar a los usuarios como hace Apple con Safari y MacOSX recuperarán parte de los usuarios perdidos en los últimos dos años.

Internet Explorer 8, or as I call it, “Aiyeeeeeee-Hate,” has completely screwed up my Internet experience, resulting in my messing up Firefox in an attempt to find out what was screwing up IE8. Now I’m having problems with both browsers. I am so frustrated!!! Four days of effort and still no satisfaction! And everybody keeps giving me the same worthless advice.

“Hey, your wagon isn’t working right? Let’s try to reinvent the wheel all over again. Go back to the very beginning — take all the wheels off and start anew. Then we can put a whole new set of wheels on your wagon and it will go again.”

F**k you, Microsoft, and the horse you rode in on. The problem lies in IE8 — something you changed!

1) IE8 cannot seem to display web pages I have been going to for the last 4 or 5 years (or more). WTF! Why are we having a problem suddenly after updating to IE8?

2) IE8 seems to have been sent out without all the security certificates it should have included, because suddenly since updating to IE8, I cannot log in at my bank (a secure site). I get a message that roughly indicates that this may not be the site I think it is, and the safest thing to do is just close the web page. (But it’s my bank, the address is correct, and their VeriSign security certificate seems to be in good order.) There is another secure site that behaves in the same way, but not all secure sites are warning me off. [Have you ever locked yourself out of your house or apartment? Doesn't it make you furious? Doesn't it make you want to scream and dance up and down and wave your arms about! I'm doing that now! My husband is busying himself in another room until I cool down.]

3) Trying to publish a blog article has become so excruciating that I just want to throw something, and I’m really not that kind of person. I love my things way too much to want to break something. In both IE and Firefox, trying to upload a file to WordPress.com is next to impossible. You follow the directions and it looks like it might accept the upload after a very long time, but then it throws a blank, white page in your face and you don’t know if the upload was successful or not. If you try Refreshing the page, it takes you back a page to the beginning of the upload process. Then you have to start the upload process over again. [Insert scream here.]

One night this last week, I sat in front of my beloved computer with a stopwatch in one hand, the mouse in the other hand. I finally got a picture uploaded and in place in the article and pressed the Publish button. By the stopwatch it was 13 minutes and some odd seconds before WordPress announced success, that it was actually published in the wee hours of the morning. I had been working on it since about 10:30 in the morning.

What this experience has taught me so far is that I REALLY don’t like Microsoft’s attitude toward the typical user. They seem to say, “You’re too stupid to manage your computer by yourself, so we’re going to do it for you. Just ignore the men behind the curtain. While we help ourselves by gathering information from your machine, we won’t hurt you — MUCH!”

I am not a rank beginner. I am not a child. I am a free woman, old enough to be someone’s grandmother. I will not be folded, spindled, torn, stepped on or shoved into a corner!

I bought the computer. It belongs to me. I reserve to myself the right to control what happens to my computer and to veto any suggestions made by a well-meaning advisor if I think that is appropriate. I will listen to advice. (May not take it, but I will listen.) I am open to being taught by a teacher or mentor. But I will NOT be treated like an errant child.

Time to shop for a new browser! The reviews say Opera is blazing fast….

Microsoft lucreaza la Internet Explorer 9 - IE9 in progress

Au trecut demult zilele in care browser-ul Internet Explorer al celor de la Microsoft domina incontestabil piata, partial din cauza monopolului Windows, partial din cauza lipsei de alternative viabile. In ultimii ani concurenta a fost din ce in ce mai acerba si in acest segment, iar browser-e ca Firefox, Opera sau Chrome au stirbit in mod continuu cota celor de la Microsoft.

Si e drept ca nici Microsoft nu s-a impotrivit prea tare. Versiunile 6, 7 si 8 ale Internet Explorer-ului, desi intr-o continua evolutie spre bine, nu au facut decat sa incerce sa ajunga din urma concurenta. Nu negam ca unele inovatii au fost implementate in premiera in IE, insa acestea au fost destul de putine. Si asa s-a ajuns la situatia din ziua de azi, in care IE8 pierde la capitole ca viteza si resurse folosite.

Insa acum aflam ca Microsoft lucreaza din greu la Internet Explorer 9, si promite o trecere de la IE8 la IE9 ca de la Vista la Windows 7. Si asta prin accelerare hardware atat a textului cat si a graficii, prin metode similare celor folosite de Google (Native Client din Chrome) si Mozilla (WebGL din Firefox).

Se va schimba si GDI-ul actual (Graphical Device Interface) cu Direct2D. Si vor fi introduse si tehnologii de pozitionare a sub-pixelilor, ceea ce va genera un text mult mai rotunjit si usor de citit. IE9 va si respecta mai mult standard-ul HTML de dezvoltare web, pe care pana acum, datorita monopolului, l-a cam ignorat. Si va suporta CSS 3. In plus, se vor regasi in cadrul acestui browser si SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) si Canvas Graphics.

Se lucreaza si la imbunatatirea performantelor Java. Si desi la un stadiu de dezvoltare incipient (alfa sau chiar pre alfa), IE9 obtine rezultate peste IE8 in testul Acid 3, si reda harti embedded cu de 5-10 ori mai multe fps, la o incarcare mult mai mica a procesorului, gratie degrevarii acestuia de catre placa video.

Dar mai avem de asteptat ceva timp pana sa vedem Internet Explorer 9. Nu se preconizeaza o perioada de aparitie, nici pentru beta nici pentru varianta finala inca. Vom vedea cat de repede se misca programatorii Microsoft, si cat de buna treaba fac de aceasta data. Pentru ca inca un esec are sanse sa arunce Internet Explorer-ul de pe prima pozitie a browser-elor.

How To Optimize Your Internet Settings

With the vast array of internet websites and web applications, sometimes we can run into little problems accessing them. Whether you are using Internet Explorer or another browser, many different websites require you to install plug-ins or add-ons like Java or Flash. Typically, there are few problems installing these applications, but that is not always the case.Some websites may change your internet settings. This may make it optimal when visiting their site, but can cause problems with other applications. There are some easy ways to optimize your internet settings and reset your browser. The steps below are the first things most technicians will try when troubleshooting browser and internet problems.

Access the Control Panel and double-click Internet Options.
On the first tab (General), click the Delete button under Browsing History. Make sure all of the options are checked, and click Delete.
Click the Settings button under Browsing History. Click the View Objects button. This will open a window with a list of any add-ons or plug-ins installed. Right-Click each item and click Delete. These objects will be reinstalled the next time you access a website that requires them. Close the window, then click OK.
Click on the Security tab at the top of the window. Click on the button that says Reset all zones to default level.
Click the Privacy tab. Click on the button that says Default (this button may be grayed out. Skip this step if it is grayed out).
Click the Content tab then click the Clear SSL State button.
Click the Advanced tab. Click the button that says Restore Advanced Settings.
Now click Apply, then OK. It is a good idea to restart the computer after completing these steps.

The steps above are a good start in troubleshooting issues with browsing the internet. You can also use the steps on a regular basis to clean up temporary files and reset your internet settings. It might be a good idea to optimize your internet settings once every couple of months.

Foi divulgada pelo presidente da divisão Windows Live numa entrevista com a revista americana PC World, ele disse que o IE 9 terá melhorias na navegação e será baseado em HTML 5 e outros detalhes

I met with Philip, the owner of my local chinese restaurant, Cheadle Imperial this morning to go through what has been done with the websitse far. He opened up Internet Explorer and displayed the website, which to my dismay had parts splayed about the page. I had forgotten to check browser compatibility! How embarrasing.. It’s sorted out now after spending a couple of hours changing it about, improving the images and background. Still a long way to go!

I decided to take a day off BMF today as I have been 5 days in a row already. My body is in agony and could really benefit from a rest than more exercise. Must remember to stretch.

Siteadvisor è un semplice programma creato dalla mcafee che si integra con il nostro browser (internet explorer o mozilla firefox) indicandoci i siti sicuri e allontanandoci da quelli pieni di virus.
Quando effettuerete una ricerca con google, vicino ad ogni risultato trovato ci sarà un segno che può essere di 4 colori differenti:
VERDE: il sito è sicuro
GIALLO: bisogna prestare attenzione
ROSSO: il sito è pericoloso
GRIGIO: il sito non è stato controllato
In questo modo possiamo evitare di entrare in siti malevoli e di cadere nella trappola di qualche pirata informatico.

Microsoft’s Internet Explorer (also known as Windows Internet Explorer) is one of the oldest web browsers available today. It comes preinstalled on most (if not all) windows computers. (A version for Macintosh computers was available for several years.)

Every new version of Internet Explorer has corresponded with a new version of the Windows operating system. The current version, Internet Explorer 8 corresponds with the release of Windows 7. However, one does not need to get Windows 7 to install IE8.

When using Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, it is fairly important to make sure your version of Windows is up-to-date. There are two ways of doing this: (1) turning on Automatic Updates via the control panel; or (2) running the Windows Update utility (or visiting the Windows Update website) and downloading all important or recommended updates.

Internet Explorer Features

Internet Explorer offers many of the more popular features found in web browsers today. (Although, sometimes it’s a little slow on incorporating the newest features/technology.) Most of them I mentioned in my previous post.

This includes: Bookmark Managers, History, Tabbed Browsing, and some Privacy controls. However, it does not offer mouse gestures, download managers, themes or skins, extensions, or spell-check functionality. Nor is there a portable version.

The Downside of IE

One of the most notable downsides of using Internet Explorer as a web browser is that IE (like many other Microsoft’s programs) is often subject to attacks from people who are just trying to cause mischief or who just like to attack Microsoft.

This isn’t to say that Microsoft is the only company that gets attacked – and I am not trying to give the impression that IE isn’t safe to use.

I am merely trying to point out that new vulnerabilities are constantly being spotted. New threats (viruses, malware, spyware, etc…) that use these vulnerabilities appear often. While Microsoft is usually pretty quick in releasing updates that fix these vulnerabilities – the problem lies between the times the threat hits and the time the user downloads the update. (Sometimes, a day or two – although it could be [much] longer.)

Updates & The Latest Version

For all web browsers, it’s somewhat important to be sure you are using the most recent version of the browser with all available updates. For some browsers, like Firefox, getting the latest version (non-beta) also means you’re getting the latest updates. But, with Internet Explorer, that’s not the case.

Microsoft has continued to update several of the most recent versions of Internet Explorer through its Windows Update (or Automatic Updates). For some users, this may include getting the more recent version of the program, for others it does not.

If you want to make sure you are using the latest version, check out the Internet Explorer page on Microsoft’s Website (and download the more recent version if one exists.) To make sure you have all the available updates, use the Windows Update program (or visit the Windows Update website) and make sure to turn automatic updates on.

A browser for “Social Networking Addicts”!

Having accounts in multiple social networking sites seems to be the hype nowadays. If you are like any other average internet user, you must have by now at least 5 different accounts on different sites that you often forget to manage or update. From my personal experience, I can assure you that that is the case since I have 8 different accounts so far and they are ever growing.

So naturally, managing your accounts becomes more of a sore chore than a great tool for interacting with family, friends, and the rest of the world. Now, I’m not going to discuss the hazards of such addiction – since I suffer from it too – but hopefully I will help a bit by recommending a solution to make it easier for you.

As I’ve come to conclude, a “fun” social networking addiction needs the support of a great browser –OK, addictions shouldn’t be fun but you got to admit there is a certain thrill to having yourself all over the net interacting with people you could’ve never known existed any way else!–.

I was a traditional user of the Internet Explorer browser, maybe out of habit because it’s what I’ve known and used ever since my internet debut in 2000 –I’m young and live in the Middle East, the internet wasn’t very accessible here before that–. I grew accustomed to personalizing it with different toolbars and buttons to ease access to different sites, but consequently it made me believe that facing problems with a browser was inevitable. I grew tired of it a while ago and kept complaining about it and had friends recommend the Google Chrome browser saying it’s problems-free. And it was problems-free, but just as well it was customization-free! After getting used to having all those buttons that made my life easier, I was forced to use a “naked” browser. I got to admit that I was very discouraged to go through it and discover its full potential like I do with every software program I use. I also simultaneously used the Opera browser because I maintain multiple accounts on the same sites –like my 2 Facebook accounts and 2 hotmail accounts– so I often use two browsers in one session to stay logged in all of them at the same time and maximize efficiency. However, not a lot of efficiency maximized there because the Opera browser was just as uncreative as the Google Chrome. Some friends, or more like Mac fanatics, recommended Safari browser, but that would be as bad as the others when used in a Windows setting. So finally, I embarked on my own search for a browser that would suit my needs as a social networking addict and there I found it!

One look at the Flock start page and you know you will like it! Social networks services like Facebook; media browsing and sharing services like Youtube; and webmail services like Gmail are directly accessible from the start page and enable you to log in to your accounts and stay logged in and updated with all changes through Flock’s sidebar rather than having to keep those tabs open all the time.

Oh one great feature I loved is Flock’s total integration with Facebook, for all you Facebook addicts out there, with a taskbar of your Facebook notifications and chat floating on all Flock windows. No wonder 2 million Facebook users made the switch to Flock browser!

On another note, you can’t ignore the aesthetically pleasing and practical interface of the browser that allows easy access for all you can think of in a modern futuristic look without cluttering.

Honestly, I have only been using it for a week now but it didn’t take me more than a day to completely fall in love with it and share it with my friends. Here’s what some of them said:

“I like it! The easy access to my emails and profiles, the organized RSS feeds, the smooth sync between different photography uploading services like Flickr and Picasa which I both use, and the Facebook online bar available all the time (not that I use it often, but I find it a nice idea) have all made it the ideal browser for me. Plus, it’s light on my Mac in terms of size compared to other browsers so it’s perfect as my supporting browser, next to the Safari Browser.”

Forefront IAG/UAG: Windows 7, IE 8 und 64 bit client side support

auf Faisal Hussain’s weblog und im TechNet UAG Forum wird nun klargestellt, was mit Forefront IAG & UAG sowie Clients wie Windows 7, IE 8 und 64 Bit Clients wie supported ist:

As I understand based on information I have about windows 7 support would be fully available for UAG (Unified Application Gateway) only. There are two Win7 clients, 32bits and 64bits and the answers are different per platform:

For 32 bit clients: SSL Network Tunneling (Network Connector) won’t work (Win7 + UAG offers instead SSTP) and Terminal Services (RDP) won’t work (TSG will). Please also note that SSL Application Tunneling will only work in socket forwarding (no port forwarding is supported).

For 64 bit clients: in addition to the above, SSL Application Tunneling and Socket Forwarding won’t work, TSG will only work on 32bit IE that supports ActiveX.

As far as I know for IAG there would only be support for 32 bit clients and is expected with update 3 that will be released end of December. IE 8 is fully supported with IAG 3.7 SP2 Update 2 only.

De volta a Guerra!! IE 9

Depois da divulgação de dados estatísticos sobre a perseguição dos browsers: Firefox, Safari e principalmente o Chrome, a Microsoft se atentou a isso. Recentemente o pessoal da CNET foi falar com os responsáveis pelo desenvolvimento do software. O vídeo em inglês pode ser visto aqui:

Segundo os desenvolvedores, essa versão será muito mais segura e ainda muito mais poderosa. Eles utilizarão técnicas de renderização mais avançadas.

“Our goal in building a great browser for consumers and for everyone is that they are Windows customers. That’s at the core of it,” Hachamovitch disse.

Bom, apesar dos pesares, sabemos que o IE 8 é considerado o browser mais seguro até o momento. Vamos ver se continuam mantendo esse posto, afinal, Mozilla, Google e Apple não querem deixar barato. Sem contar na misteriosa volta do pessoal do NetScape.
