We see a lot of articles / books / blogs / podcasts/ videos on getting started in social media marketing. Just the other day I talked about the seemingly never ending list of “10 best tips to succeed online,” articles. After thinking about all the quick start guides I realized most of their problem is that they are vague. We will start this series with an article from the Richmond Times-Dispatch (of Virginia), it is simply titled, “Using social media to drive business to your website,” written by Gray Poehler.

The article discusses 6 places to start building your company’s web presence if you are on a limited budget and looking to do the marketing in house. Although the article is an okay basic lesson in social media marketing it fails to explain how to go about many of the strategies it discusses.

Today lets start by looking at facebook strategies, the article says:

“Facebook: Optimizing your Facebook profile with your business keyword can make it an invaluable marketing vehicle.”

How do you go about optimizing your facebook profile?

First you need to start by regular participation. (I spoke about the need for this in all of your social media marketing in Fridays post: here )

Participating will instantly give you a larger presence on facebook and without it you seem illegitimate. Everyone in the business needs to be involved in this; after all they ARE your core community!!!
Next you should make a schedule and a plan for your updates, use it as the MINIMUM for what you will do. If you try to make a plan that is very robust you may find it hard to keep up with; that is why I suggest that you plan the minimum and add in the rest as you are inspired to do so. You may find you end up participating so much that you don’t need a schedule at all and that’s even better!

That article also mentioned “your business keyword.”
This really isn’t just one keyword; it should be a list of keywords for your business. Start this list by thinking of what you would put into a search engine if you wanted your business to come up as a result. You need to brain storm, ask everyone you know what they think.
“What would you google if you wanted to find a business like mine but didn’t know of any?”

I think my first day selling was the last day of the golden age in B2B media — back when magazine people spent all day bending over to pick up money, and then marveled at how hard they were working.

On my second day the balance tipped; customers by-and-large stopped looking for reasons to advertise, and started looking for reasons not to advertise. This has been documented and discussed. What’s missing from the discussion is why industrial advertisers might actually want the trade media to fail.

Start with the assumption that as much as buying marketing, these advertisers were buying security.They followed a  simple formula, perfect for the engineering mindset that drives these companies. It was this: Advertising with trade media is the only reliable way to reach a targeted audience. So by doing whatever the competition does you will achieve similar results.

Feeling aggressive? Spend a little more and you’ll do a little better. There were few variables, like the strength of your creative, and the novelty of your logo-ed novelties. It was neat and simple and let companies get back to the business of making stuff — which was their true DNA.
