For a while there I had a good thing going. Late at night, tucked into bed and waiting for my drugs

For a while there I had a good thing going.

Late at night, tucked into bed and waiting for my drugs to kick in, I often listened to the Radio Dan Show on TalkRadioX. Ostensibly about TV and the movies, the show features host Radio Dan Delgado and his presumably lovely Intern Jessica. They even have their own blog. Their back-and-forth banter was mildly amusing and helped to induce sleep. . .at least, as I said, until the drugs kicked in.

Then one night, Jessica crossed the line from being the “she’s funny but thank god I’m not married to her” sidekick to a snarly bitch that even thousands of radio miles made too insufferable to bear. It doesn’t matter what the topic was — and honestly the show’s topics are usually so banal they are not worth remembering the next day — Jessica suddenly went off on a rant about age and getting old.

Now I don’t know what Jessica looks like but I do recall that in one of the shows she mentioned being over 30. Her rant was that being 40 was over the hill. She wanted nothing to with anyone – and certainly no men — who had gotten that old. Period. End of story.

Bitch.

I felt sorry for Radio Dan. He is married to Jessica. My first or second thought was that a divorce was in Dan’s future and that I hoped he had enough sense not to put any of his property in both of their names. There is no way that any man, no matter how desperate for sex he might be, will put up with that crap for long.

My third thought was that Jessica reminded me of my sister-in-law, Mrs. X, from Westport, CT. They are about the same age. Mrs. X comes from a relatively wealthy Westport family and has had enough money most of her life to be able to buy what she wants and to wear nice clothes. Like many girls her age, she confuses looking good with intelligence. She has no clue how pathetically stupid she really is. If there is any enjoyment in talking to her, it’s listening to her speak, knowing that she thinks she is being cool when she is saying the most inane things. It’s almost as good as being stoned.

Well, that describes Jessica, too. I wish I could live long enough to find out how she positively cranks out in old age — self-hatred is not too far behind narcissism. Unfortunately, since I am already well beyond her cut-off age of 40 and therefore near death, that is one pleasure I will have to do without.

Poor me.

BBC Radio WMA Streams for Windows Media Player

So you want to access the BBC Radio streams as you did in the good old days before the iplayer? Well i’ve found the links hidden away on the BBC’s website. Many a day have i been swearing that I can’t stream programmes such as click, and radio stations to my media player. I just hate the need for flash, a security hole in any system. I hate the need to have a web browser open. I hate the media interface that doesn’t work with my laptops hot-keys! For all those with similar complaints over the iPlayer go to:

A new internet radio set has been developed for blind and visually impaired listeners, allowing people to listen online to audio books, podcasts, talking newspapers and audio catalogues, as well as internet radio stations from around the world.

Manufactured by the charity British Wireless for the Blind Fund ( http://www.blind.org.uk ), the ‘Sonata’ radio – claimed to be the first of its kind – was launched earlier this month, and allows users to listen to any streamable, unlicensed internet audio feed.
Designed to be as simple as possible to use, the Sonata is controlled entirely with five buttons. When connected to broadband internet, the radio contacts a server in Holland to allow readers to choose from a current list of available radio stations and podcasts.

Although built primarily for blind and visually impaired users and available to such users on free permanent loan, the Sonata is also suitable for other users, said Fiona Fountain, head of fundraising and information for the BWBF. “It’s so simple to use that anybody who has limited mobility – for example, older people with poor manual dexterity – or people who may not use computers can use it”, she said.

Fountain said the radio has other potential applications, as it has the potential to broadcast messages to other Sonata users such as news of other radio services. “The BWBF could record its own message to tell people about a new service on Sonata,” said Fountain. “This means we can do it live, without having to write a letter, get it Brailled, or use large print or CD format, and then post it out, as we’ve had to do in past.”

The concept for the Sonata originates from Holland, where churches used the system to enable the home-bound to listen in to their local church service. The company responsible for developing the product, Solutions Radio, realised it had wider applications and approached the BWBF to develop it for the UK market. For those not qualifying for a loan, the Sonata costs £299 with a further one-off activation charge of £52.

Imeem has been in financial trouble for a while, and has run through an estimated $30million in investor dollars.

Among the investors, all four major record labels, although earlier this year Warner Music wrote off its investment in the service. In 2007, Imeem became the first ad supported on-demand online music service to negotiate deals with all four major labels. Those deals included equity which made partners of the four major labels. MySpace also has partnership deals in place with the four major labels.

A few months ago MySpace acquired online music service iLike, with 50 million registered listeners, for a reported $20million. Comscore estimated that Imeem had 16 million unique visitors in September. It’s impossible to compare these two numbers except to say that it doesn’t sound like Imeem is a lot smaller than iLike to me.

MySpace now owns two of the five online music services that announced partnerships with Google’s new music platform. The way that works is that Google drives traffic to partner sites who play the music and pay the royalties.

Recently Spotify delayed their US launch due to problems negotiating a license for ad supported on demand streaming with the record companies. Plug that info into the fact that Imeem was about to get acquired by MySpace for so little, and it’s easy to understand why Spotify is meeting with some opposition. Seems like the record companies want to limit their exposure on the ad supported revenue model…

When I was a daily drive host on ESPN Radio I was always asked “who will be the famous guest today?”

When I was a daily drive host on ESPN Radio I was always asked “who will be the famous guest today?” I was asked this so much that indirectly there was an enormous amount of pressure to deliver for the folks in house. I think over time I would start questioning the value of this process. I had always believed that the listening audiences of sports radio just wanted to be entertained for the brief amount of time that the radio host had their attention. Understand that most radio listeners are either in their car or are in some form of transit. New outlets such as satellite radio have really hit hard with more genres making the daily commute more individually driven. Ipods and MP3 players have also cut down on the amount of time radio broadcasts generate. If you can listen to a podcast of your favorite show in your available or down time why wouldn’t you?

These factors led me to try something different on my daily radio show “Sports Journey with Lake Lewis”. First and foremost my listeners have always been able to hear A-list guest ranging from Boxing Promoter “only in America” Don King to Hall of Fame Quarterback Joe Namath. Having in the past worked with super stars of today like Orlando Magic Center Dwight Howard I found out that it was never about me. In other words today’s radio suffers from egos that ten to fifteen years ago one could argue was needed. Radio personalities were at one point the direct link between fan and athlete. What went on in the game and afterwards in the locker room was usually discussed in length to listeners’ on their respective local stations. In the new millennium things have taken a drastic change. Athletes through the emergence of social media outlets are setting the record straight whether good or bad. They have become more accessible albeit indirectly accessible because of instant media. There has never been a time where information about any athlete was more readily available than today. As the world progresses even further with technology, creativity will be even more paramount to grabbing and holding a listening audience. In my opinion if radio does not go along with the times they will severely fall by the wayside. Don’t be fooled, radio advertising is at an all time low and this was starting to happen before the economy took a turn for the worse. The growth of the internet and smart phones, have allowed people news and sports information options that they otherwise would not have access.

I thought the way to get to the listeners and a fan of today was to create an outlet that would bring the truths about events directly from what we watch sports for. The Athletes! Come on be honest. We follow sports because it is the single most important form of entertainment in the US. When teams win its therapeutic for the moral and the pulse of the cities in which they play. It’s easier to get up for work when your team has been victorious over the weekend. It is easier for me as a journalist to report and cover teams that are winning. The adage that everyone is a front runner at heart could not be truer. There is a bigger underlying question here that I wanted verification from our readers. That question is would you prefer to hear your favorite on air personality or your favorite athlete? Let’s be sure of one thing. The athlete that comes on Sports Journey or host their own shows on our network are not told to keep it straight and narrow. We want them to be sharp, charismatic, and witty. To show the fans another side to their personality that they may not have been aware of off the field. Also knowing a lot of pro athletes that are great family people, I wanted to dispel the stereotype of them not being adequate orators and lacking in people skills. This is what I envisioned when I started Sports Journey. Out of the box sports talk radio with veteran talent and pro athletes. With that said would you prefer to hear myself or another on air personality of your choice or an athlete who is stepping out of the box? This is a brand new approach that we think is at the forefront of radio and internet sports talk. Will it prevail as we go forward? Only time and you the sports talk listeners will determine that.

Lake Lewis is the President and CEO of the Sports Journey Broadcast Network. He also was a host on ESPN Radio 1060 Orlando, ESPN Radio 1080 Melbourne and the Drive Time host ESPN Radio 1240 Maryland and WMET 1160 in Washington DC.

Music sales have been changed by the Internet. That’s perhaps the most obvious statement I

Music sales have been changed by the Internet. That’s perhaps the most obvious statement I’ve ever written on Audio4cast. Nonetheless, it’s interesting to look at how the Internet has impacted music sales, and a post on Nielsen’s blog recently did just that, discussing a recent article in Billboard magazine.

Individual tracks accounted for 57% of all digital music sold in 2008. More intriguing is the fact that the top 200 tracks accounted for 14.5% of sales in 2004 and rose to 15.8% in 2005, 17.1% in 2006 and 2007 and 17.2% in 2008. Through October 25, 2009, the top 200 tracks’ share stood at 18.7%.

Not exactly what you were thinking, right? We all think of the Internet as fostering diverse listening and independent artists. So why are sales concentrating more on the most popular songs, not less?

It turns out that popular tracks may be benefitting from a “herd effect due to the viral nature of the Internet. The awareness generated by that small number of songs could drown out less popular songs.” In other words, top 40 playlists are still driving music sales. In any week, one of out four songs sold belongs to that top 200.

On the other hand, Album sales are trending in the other direction. “The top 200 digital albums have accounted for a smaller share of total digital album sales since 2004.” “The top 200 digital albums have shown an opposite trend in market share, steadily dropping to 21.9% in 2008 from 28.7% in 2004.”

Listeners that purchase albums online are listening to fewer hit albums and more eclectic album offerings, while those that purchase single tracks are concentrating on the top 200 songs more and more. The numbers show that it’s not exactly the expansive and expanding marketplace many have imagined. While the Internet has become the place to find and listen to music by independent and unknown artists, the diverse offerings have yet to impact digital song sales, which remain concentrated on the hits.
