It’s Cyber Monday everybody! Woo hoo? I thought this would be a good time to take about shoppi

It’s Cyber Monday everybody! Woo hoo? I thought this would be a good time to take about shopping on the Internet.

If you’re like me, I love online shopping. It’s so easy to bargain hunt and then it shows up at my house.

However, there are some pitfalls. It only really works if you know exactly what you want, in what color and what size. And when you spend on the Internet, sometimes it doesn’t feel like ‘real’ money.

I never buy clothes or shoes online unless I’ve tried them on (I made the mistake once and received a bizarre pair of stripey jeans that sound cool, but I assure you are not).

Sooooo, for all you shoppers out there, here’s a cheapskatewood tip! If you see something in the store and you have a handy dandy new-fangled phone with the Internets, always look for the prices online. Keep in mind tax and shipping, but you might just be able to save yourself some cash. When you buy something in a store, you often pay the, what I call the “convenience tax.” “I want it now and I’ll pay anything for it!” Any big event, you’ll always get stuck with it. So, if it’s significantly cheaper on the Internet and you can wait a week, wait to buy it online.

And here’s another secret to the net. There are a LOT of coupons online. And they are relatively easy to find if you are willing to add an extra minute to your search.

I order a lot of stuff from vistaprint.com for my comedy group. Sooooo – here’s what I do. Search “Vistaprint coupons” – and a list of coupon places will show up. Couponcabin.com is pretty reliable. I can find a coupon for 50% my entire order, sometimes with free shipping every single time.

Another tip, is make a list. Just like you would make a grocery list, make a list of things you need a STICK TO IT. These marketers are good at what they do, so don’t be suckered!

Back to Cyber Monday, I found some sites called cybermonday.com and cybermonday.net (They seem legit. It’s a good reference, though I’d probably just go directly to the sellers site and double-check). I recommend checking it out. But don’t get suckered into buying something you don’t need! And don’t be intimidated by time limits. “One day only” “30 minutes left!” “Buy or DIE!” Take your time and spend your money wisely.

At 11:15 this morning, the Internet monitoring firm Akamai reported that more than 270 retail Web sites had more than four million visitors per minute. This staggering number is up about 43% compared to Cyber Monday of 2008. Many companies are also offering deals like free shipping, reduced prices and gift cards with purchases. Even with these high numbers, total holiday sales are predicted to fall by one percent this holiday season. Despite the prediction, I think the Cyber Monday numbers show that people are still spending, despite the economy. The holiday season is a time for excessiveness and many are unwilling to break tradition, instead choosing to cut back in other areas throughout the year.

Although four million visitors per minute may seem excessive and like consumers have time to waste, I think internet shopping is less of a time waster and more of a quick distraction. Even as I sit here and write, I keep flipping to some of my favorite Web sites to see if there are any good deals. Online shopping is the new way to shop while avoiding the crowded stores, limited selections and unfriendly workers. It is direct and quick, making it appeal as less of a time waster and more of a time saver. In fact, I just found the perfect gift for my father, all while doing research for my blog. Internet shopping is a tool to multitask and feel accomplished and I am glad the trend is growing.

As for the deals offered today, I think Cyber Monday is just as much of overhype as Black Friday. Stores know exactly how to attract consumers: offer great deals but limit the time. In our frenzy to save money, we forget that the same if not better deals will be offered in the future. People rush the stores on Black Friday to compete with thousands of others to get that bargain item. Stores open at midnight and the people pour in, except the real winner is the store, not the consumer. While it may seem like you are practically stealing the item, the truth is the store makes money and gets you to buy additional items that may not be such a steal. As a coupon user and deal finder myself, I think it is important to bargain shop. However, I do not want to go through the frustration of camping outside of a store to be one of the first 50 customers and receive a small gift card. I would rather wait as the holiday season continues and buy the item in a few weeks when the sales increase. It may not be as good of a buy, but it is a hassle-free purchase.

Regardless of how consumers choose to spend their money, it is important that they do spend their money. The holiday season is a vital time for businesses. As the year ends, stores want to clear out the old inventory to make room for new inventory. In addition, it is a good time of year for stores to make up for declining sales in the beginning of the year. The recession has crippled many businesses, but as this joyful time of year approaches, it is best to be optimistic about the power of the holiday season on sales.

So, how have you spent today? Been Internet shopping by any chance? Well, if not you’ll be in the mi

So, how have you spent today? Been Internet shopping by any chance? Well, if not you’ll be in the minority as today is supposedly one of the biggest days for e-commerce, with virtual tills ringing to the tune of over 700 sales per minute. ‘Manic Monday’ (or Cyber Monday in some circles) is set to see the busiest day for online Christmas shopping, but how realistic is it to assume that everyone has deserted the high street and opted for online browsing?

Well, a poll by Zavvi (comments about their high street closure can be inserted here) showed that more than 81% of Brits are planning to do their Christmas shopping online, and this has already started with last week’s sales figures showing a surge in online gift purchases.

There has undoubtedly been a rise in popular high street stores developing e-commerce sites; from Topshop and Harvey Nichols to Currys and Argos, you no longer need to leave the house. Apparently. There has also been a trend in online shopping ‘malls’, as I like to describe them, with Net-A-Porter and ASOS leading the way.

But what I have always remained adamant about it is that the ease and convenience of the online world can never be a substitute for a girly shopping trip or the way a gorgeous Marc Jacobs bag feels in the flesh. And whilst I still remain a fan of the ‘tangible’, online retailers are making moves to change my mind.

This kind of shopping is no longer just about the convenience or finding the best price – although that is particularly important in the current climate – but instead it has become a reason for using and developing social media.

There are several sites that are helping shoppers create an exciting online experience; like ASOS Life, an online community that share fashion advice and shop virtual stores; Style Hive, a place for likeminded fashionistas to share style tips; and My It Things, where users create their own online magazine. There are also true virtual stores (touching on the Second Life ideals), like I Like Totally Love It and Gemsta.

One site that I really like is OSOYOU, where you can shop a range of popular stores but more importantly, compare prices and make shopping lists to help drive you around the real high street. This is where I think the opportunity is; rather than retailers hanging up their till receipts and giving in to online shopping, I think they should be using the internet as an opportunity to drive more people into their stores.

No doubt retailers are starting to fight back, with discount vouchers landing in my Twitter stream and inbox on an hourly basis from various friends passing them around, but I think there’s still more they can do. An example (an easy one for me to quote because I’m working on it) is Style Birmingham’s latest campaign, which aims to do just this. This Christmas is all about ‘One Mile of Style’, which revolves around an interactive map that shoppers can use to explore the city’s retail offering on their computer. They can find out more about the festive activities taking place at key retailers, print the map off and use it to deviate from their usual shops and get to know the city’s hidden gems. The new iPhone app – the first of its kind – also aims to bridge these two worlds and ensure the longevity of the high street.

So, basically I don’t have a massive, life-changing point, I just wanted to stick up for the high street and say that there’s still life in the old boy yet!

Just in case you were living under the world’s most enormous rock, it is my duty to inform you

Just in case you were living under the world’s most enormous rock, it is my duty to inform you that Christmas is nearly upon us. Now, I love Christmas – it is my favourite holiday of the year. I love the traditions – reading ‘The Night Before Christmas’ with Mum before bed on Christmas Eve, dried out roast dinners even when the temperature is +30°C (yes, my family are British!), lying under the Christmas tree to look up at the lights … the list goes on. Yet, I have done an exceptionally good job of denying the imminence of Christmas until now. You see, as much as I love Christmas it is stressful, and I am not into dealing with the double whammy of Christmas and uni exams, so I decided to ignore the former until the latter was over (which was meant to be today, although my stupid illness clearly didn’t get the memo, leaving me too sick to sit my exam and thus prolonging that agony – my last exam now won’t be until early December!)

But now it is time to face Christmas. This year, though, I have a strategy. Online shopping. I normally love to shop, but at Christmas time the crowds and heat are too much even for me, and living in a regional city in Australia doesn’t exactly give one numerous options. I am one who likes to give really thoughtful gifts – I never give for the sake of giving, or to better someone else – not the either of these are an option in a student budget. But I love giving gifts – ask my aunt and uncle who had to help me try and cram all my gifts for other people into my suitcase when I came home from London!

So the Interne it is. However, this does present its own challenges – there are just so many choices, and given that so many are overseas you have to choose quickly for them to be here in time – the arrival of all the gifts for my siblings on Christmas Eve last year is nail-biting anxiety I would rather not reproduce! My first port of call is always Etsy –an online marketplace best likened to eBay for handicrafts, although there is no auction component. I have get some great gifts for people here over the years, and have already found a few ideas – a necklace for my cousin, personalised dog tags for my little brother, cards for overseas family and a calendar for Dad’s partner – and I am sure there will the more. I also like to shop in overseas store for family living there to save on postage – last year my cousin’s son got a worm farm shipped directly to his home in England from a company over there. This year I think I will get him a book, especially since Amazon now have an English site. Speaking of which, Amazon is another of my favourites, particularly given how strong the Australian dollar is at the moment, making it cheaper to buy off there than special order here. Experience gifts are also good – last year we got my godparents a foodies walking tour of Sydney from Red Balloon Days which they loved. I also love looking in magazines for online ideas – Real Living is very in touch with the online market place and provides suggestions of heaps of great, quirky sites.

So now I am making my list and checking twice then I will pound not the pavement but the keyboard! Do others do most of their Christmas shopping online now? What websites do you love to use?

Sometimes when making a purchase online, I see things like “GET $10 OFF YOUR NEXT PURCHASE

Sometimes when making a purchase online, I see things like “GET $10 OFF YOUR NEXT PURCHASE” or “YOU’VE EARNED A FREE PAIR OF MOVIE TICKETS.” Those little last minute ads that surface right after I make my purchase look nothing like ads at all, they actually look like a great deal and a penny pincher’s dream. 90% of the time I ignore them because I’m pressed for time (hey these Fandango movie tickets weren’t purchased for no reason, I got to get me to a double feature of Toy Story thank you very much) and the other 10% of the time I just ignore them because instinct tells me there is a catch. Well it turns out, my instinct is right.

These last minute money saving opportunities come with a catch. You click on them to get the discount/savings/freebie you are promised and then they take your credit card information from the purchase you just made and sign you up for a monthly fee. In return for that fee, you get the discount/savings/freebie. Bottom line: you have no idea you signed up and a random monthly fee starts showing up on your statement.

Want to know more information about this subject? I did too. That’s why when I was watching the Today Show this morning and they ran a detailed story on these scams, I was fascinated and wanted to share it with you guys. It makes it harder to be poor and wise with your money when the discount you thought you were getting turns out to be a surcharge. Check out the Today Show’s look at this mysterious charge that online shoppers have been getting:

http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/26184891/vp/33987109#33987109

On a lighter note, today is a WOOT OFF! Don’t know what WOOT is? Well WOOT.COM is a pretty fun website that has a different item for sale every day for a very low price. A WOOT OFF is when they sell multiple items for a few minutes throughout the day. So you can keep checking WOOT.COM today to see if that one particular item you need pops up. It’s a great way to get things like PC Monitors, Headphones, Cookware, etc. Around Christmas time, there is nothing better than a WOOT off.

Well, this pregnancy I am definitely not managing to avoid the morning sickness – it is there

Well, this pregnancy I am definitely not managing to avoid the morning sickness – it is there constantly, pretty much.

I suppose I’m still pretty lucky as so far it has not got anywhere near actually being sick, but it’s like having constant car sickness or something in the background all the time. Occasionally it gets a bit worse – like this evening, where I really felt awful for half an hour or so – and sometimes it’s not too bad and I forget about it. But it’s always there.

We have just come back from a lovely week at Center Parcs in Sherwood Forest, which i’ll probably blog about seperately. I’m still very much off the tea and coffee – in fact the thought of pretty much any hot drink, including hot chocolate or horlicks makes me feel quite ill. I’m back to a stage where I just can’t get too excited about the thought of any food – I have a ‘big shop’ to do but can’t think of any meal ideas which seem remotely appetising. I ate some mini cheddars at Tony’s mum’s house this afternoon and they just tasted like salt! I’m also really thirsty all the time, but no matter how much I drink it doesn’t go away.

My hormones are all over the place too. Last Sunday, while we were getting ready to go to Center Parcs the following day, I went to the supermarket to buy some of the things we were going to take away with us for self catering. My timing was awful. I was in the supermarket for the 11am Remembrance Sunday two minute silence. (Usually we go to to a service, the only reason we didn’t this year was trying to get everything packed and ready for our holiday). Anyway, they announced over the tannoy that they were going to be doing the silences in ten minutes, and then proceeded to start playing really emotional songs like Mariah Carey “There’s a hero/if you look inside your soul….” Oh my god. By the time the fanfare came on for the silence I already knew. I was going to be a hormonal wreck. I tried to find a quiet aisle (settled on the nappy aisle and tried to fix my gaze on them for the two minutes) and just stood there with the tears rolling down my face. It was just awful. I didn’t have a tissue or anything on me. After the two minutes were up, I tried really hard to pull myself together again but couldn’t really think straight so just threw a few more things in the trolley, paid, and got out of there!

As soon as I got in the car, I called Tony and started sobbing… he must’ve wondered what the hell had happened!

I had a similar hormonal outburst about this stage in pregnancy last time – again in the supermarket! I was doing the shopping and Tony was washing my car. When I finished I got into the car park and couldn’t find Tony. I tried to ring him and couldn’t get an answer. I got really upset and panicky. I wheeled the trolley round the car park a few times, like a mad woman, all bleary eyed. I thought Tony had abandoned me and I was really cross and upset. What had actually happened was there was a queue to wash the cars, and he was still washing mine, with the phone inside it. Eventually I spotted him at the car wash, wheeled the trolley over and pretty much pushed the trolley into the car, shouting “where have you been?!?! I thought you’d gone without me!!!”

At that point in the last pregnancy, I vowed never to step in a supermarket ever again. Internet shopping all the way.

I think the same course of action would be wise this time round, too!

I never really fancied myself a headband girl, but my hasty decision to cut blunt bangs awhile back has left me with a chunk of unruly hair that needs taming. Enter the headband. A wonderful way to keep the wispys at bay and achieve that stylish school girl” look at the same time. No longer reserved for the prep set, weve come a long way from the puffy ribbon styles of yore. I prefer the ones with beaded and floral embellishments, they have a sublte tiara effect that appeals to my bohemian side. (pssst.. it is also a quick way to neaten up seriously ratty, dirty hair. A situation I find myself in all too often.)

It was not too many decades ago when the naïve mindset of our country, and most countries, was that

It was not too many decades ago when the naïve mindset of our country, and most countries, was that the President was “the good daddy who taught us right from wrong; fiscally, morally, and behaviorally. Here’s some news.

The President is not our Daddy; and, if anything we are his. Many who have not worked within the confines of the Washington D.C. Beltway (I did for over a decade in media covering Capital Hill, The White House, the first Gulf War, etc), might not understand, the President of the United States is your employee.

The Office Of The Presidency is not a very glamorous job. In fact there are only two main descriptions within it. a. Keep our citizenry safe and b. balance the budget. Though of course it is more ideal if our president keeps his zipper up while performing his duties, or not be inebriated and choking on pretzels while his two dogs look on, as long as he gets the job done, he has done what we elected him to do.

You see, he/she works for us, not vice versa. If we find ourselves in a “photo-op” with the president, it is he who should be excited, not us, as he gets to take a picture with his boss (one of us). So why wait for the President to tell us the economy is okay. We know it is not okay as long as we are throwing billions of dollars into a war in which we do not belong. So be it. One day, we pray, he may come to his senses and start bringing them home as he promised every day as he campaigned for the job.

Meantime, we the small businesspersons of America must continue doing commerce so our clients and customers will have products to purchase. Yes, they may be merchandise that costs less than they normally would, but that is fine. Just the very act of making a purchase, clicking a mouse, charging it on your debit or credit card (or Paypal), shows the rest of the country that it is okay to still buy goods. We do not have to wait for the president to tell us “things are going to be okay”. He is not our daddy. We love shopping for our friends and family, and no economy is going to change that, even if it is merely a card or a mouse pad or a hoodie, we’ve made a purchase, created jobs, and made someone else very happy.

Please don’t wait for one of your employees (the President) to tell you “everything is okay, lets start spending”; do it on your own, maybe he’ll get the picture, and know we are not waiting for him to tell us. After all, we are the boss.

———————————————————————————————————————

Many people shop online, but few use online promotional and coupon codes. Either online shoppers are

Many people shop online, but few use online promotional and coupon codes. Either online shoppers are unaware that these money saving coupons exist, or they don’t know how to find them.

Last Monday I decided to buy Medieval Times tickets for my family of five. I went to the Medieval Times website, entered in our information, and was stunned to see that tickets would be almost $300! I did find a few coupon codes on the Medieval Times website, but they only brought my total down to about $200. I opened a new internet search page, typed in “Medieval Times coupon codes” and up popped several results. In about 3 minutes I was able to find a code that was good for buy 1 get 1 free tickets. By entering in the promo code my total came down to $107 including all taxes and fees. In five minutes total I saved myself almost $200, or around 60% of the ticket costs.

Whether you call them promo codes, discount codes, or coupon codes, these money saving codes are available for almost every shopping site you can think of. You may find them on the site you are shopping on at the top of the screen, as a pop up, or on a special sale page. There are also many promo code websites that keep a running list of codes for stores. Some sites will have five, ten, or even fifteen codes for a single site.

What can these promo codes get you? Each code is different, but the most common benefits are:

Free shipping

10, 15, 20, or 25% off

Buy 1 Get 1 Free items

Free gifts with purchase

Dollar amount savings such as $5 off, or $5 off of $50

You may have several to choose from, but pick the code that would save you the most. What happens if the code does not work? Sometimes you enter a code and nothing happens. That’s ok, just try another!

Before you check out on any website, always take a minute or two to search for a promo code. $5 may not seem like much of a savings, but if you saved $5 or got free shipping on every online purchase you made your savings would really add up! We love to read comments, so be sure to say hi if you enjoyed these tips and feel free to leave some savings tips of your own!

Most of my friends are aware of the delight both Kevin and I take in internet shopping. We buy near

Most of my friends are aware of the delight both Kevin and I take in internet shopping. We buy nearly everything we need on line. We even found each other there. Outside of clothes and food, the net is our one-stop shopping source. Given this, I wasn’t surprised when Kevin came home from work and told me he’d bought a new lawnmower on line.

You see, Kevin is having some problems with his cervical spine and is facing some minor surgery on his knee this week. Our yard is a little large and a day of yardwork leaves him in a good deal of discomfort. Sears was having a sale on their riding mowers and was offering free delivery to boot. With $500 off the original price, he couldn’t resist. One click and that baby was on its’ way to us.

Imagine my surprise when I came home from work to find something that could plow the north forty nestled in our shed.

Here, you see Kevin bringing The Beast out to begin the job. What used to take him an hour, he now does in ten minutes.

It’s a good thing this puppy has reverse. Handling the delicate curves around the gardens could get a little tricky.

He has to move all of the side patio furniture to get it through so he can cut the front.

This is the front yard. Yes, that’s all there is to it. Most of our property extends behind the house, so watching him cut the tree lawn out there is a bit embarrassing. The Beast is just so large!

You still don’t think this is a huge mower? Here it is in comparison to my car.

Yes, I know Minis are small. The point is, my husband’s lawn mower is as big as my car.

I don’t mind, though. He’s happy and there’s less wear and tear on his body. You’d think we would have learned from this though, wouldn’t you? Wait until you see what we bought next.

I dont know what it is about fall but as soon as the tempature drops I start wanting to dress like an 8-year old. Little cardigands mary janes, knee socks. Maybe its all the “Back to school” dressing that has been permenantly ingrained in my mind over the years, but I love to have a prim and proper wardrobe of grays and navy for the cooler times. Also, I love this teddy bear.
