Thought I might do one of those day in the life things to show my usage of mobile devices including the Viliv X70. Also thought it might give me a chance to check out if I can perhaps use the mobile tech better. I might add that I’m in a new Job now and therefore haven’t got everything worked out/setup yet i.e. haven’t got a wireless net connection like the last place so that may change my usage a bit from my old setup.

I use the X70 with a thinkoutside bluetooth keyboard and mouse

7:29am Checked some RSS feeds on the Iphone. The iPhone RSS reader is simple and easy to use and while I’d normally flash up my LG P100 in the morning this time the Iphone was close and easy to use.

9:30am Had a meeting, took the Viliv and used Onenote to take notes. I’m using the Beat version of Office 2010.

11:11am Back at Desk and used the desktop PC, transferred the notes via PDF as I haven’t yet got Onenote on the PC. Used the iphone to check some emails.

12:30pm lunch. Used the iphone to check and respond to emails, read some rss feeds and check facebook.

2:00pm Another meeting, took the Viliv. Note, every meeting results in 10 minutes being spent on expliaing what the X70 is!

2:30pm Back in office, desktop PC and the Viliv using the keyboard and mouse to update and flesh out some notes.

3:00pm Meeting – Viliv and Onenote

4:30pm Docked the Iphone and Viliv to use the internet tethering to check and respond to some emails – lengthy responses which meant the iPhone was out.

The rest of the day was Desktop PC. The evening I used the LG P100 as it’s my desktop replacement and great for web, email, photoshop etc. I probably use it for 2-3 hours in the evening.

So that’s it. I was surprised I used the iPhone as much as I did and can put it down to the fact that it’s always online and for the moment I have to tether with the Viliv for web access which is a bit painful. If the Viliv had 3G I might reach for it more than the iPhone as it’s got a bigger screen and I can do more text entry on the bigger keyboard plus it’s good for inking.

Since the rumour of Apple creating a MacBook tablet came out a few weeks ago, new companies make plans to bust out a tablet device as well !
Rumors have been flying about both an Apple Tablet and the Microsoft Courier, and now two new companies may have plans to bust out a tablet device: Dell and Asus.
Dell’s forthcoming tablet would be something like the Archos 5 Internet Tablet and Asus reportedly has plans to release an Eee Pad tablet device.
So what will it be?
The next big craze in computing, will it save print publishers ?
Anyway, I don’t really get the point of these internet tablets.

Just when the future of news publications was under question, Apple looked set to save the day in the form of their internet tablet, which if the rumours are to be believed, is set to be released very soon. The main appeal of this device is said to be it’s news consumption, which some have even suggested could save the newspaper industry.

But now there’s a new kid on the scene. UK newspaper ‘The Sun’ describe it as the “must have handheld accessory of 2009″, featuring a 26 inch full panoramic colour ’screen’ and 3D photo realistic graphics. If that wasn’t good enough, there’ll also be no squinting at pages or need to turn the device on its side for better reading. And don’t go thinking it’s all business with this device there’s also 7 built in pen-friendly games. But the best selling point has got to be that there’s “no waiting for downloads” in order to get your daily news fix.

It’s gotta be too good to be true!

Oh..this is bad, really bad. After S’s rave about how sexy the N900 is, I started having a deeper dig into N900 details and found it to be worthy of replacing my aging iPhone 3G!

Check out the youtube vid – Nokia really did good the UI on the N900 – I like the multi workspaces which look like a much better implementation than my old Sony Xperia X1’s Panels.

and it runs a browser (Mozilla powered) with flash support, a 3.5″ resistive WVGA screen (800×480 res..wow), slide-out QWERTY keyboard, 256MB of RAM, 32GB of internal memory, a MicroSD slot, GPS, an FM transmitter, a 5-megapixel camera, a 3.5mm jack and cellular radio…wow, the list goes on. Compared to the iPhone 3G, the N900’s thicker and heavier (110.9 x 59.8 x 18 mm, 113 cc, 181 g)

Can’t wait till mid Nov when S get his N900 and I get to check in out! Just may be tempted to get on myself but have to look into raising funds by selling existing gadgets else the missus won’t be impressed! Such is life..for a gadgetholic like me having to constantly look for the next fix!

Thanks J for the introduction.

This is my first post on vilivboys, and I want to start out by thanking the guys for letting me be a part of the site!

I am a bit of a gadget nut, and hold a dear place in my heart for any device that I can fit in my pocket!. I’ve owned almost every Ultra Mobile PC and smart phone ever created, and I am hoping to share my future experiences with you all.

At the moment, I am eagerly awaiting my Nokia N900 which I have had on order from the States for a few weeks now. It’s been one of the most painful waits I’ve ever experiened for a gadget as the more I read about this phone, the more I want it now!.

After checking the status of my order (which is now a daily ritual) this morning, I stumbled across the news that the N900 has been delayed til ‘mid to late November’, which now means the release has been delayed by 2 months from the original date.

The N900 is the newest attempt by Nokia to create a pocketable tablet PC experience and from all reports, they seem to have hit the nail on the head, creating a powerful yet fairly sleek device running Maemo 5 (Maemo) with built in phone capability.

Bring on November!

[dieter]

Based upon their previous N-Series Internet tablets, the N900 is a Linux based device with a large 800×480 display, but adds a quad-band 3G radio where previous products have been limited to WiFi only for communications. There’s also full support for Exchange syncing, and a customized version of the Mozilla browser used in the desktop version of Firefox. With a slide-out 3 row qwerty keyboard and a large screen this device is ideal for corporate e-mail, and does a credible job of displaying formatted e-mail as well as a full weeks worth of calendar entries at a time.

After spending a few minutes using the device, we were left thinking this was what we were hoping for when Nokia announced the N97. In nearly all ways this device is designed to satisfy the needs of the ‘power user’.

We’re eagerly awaiting a test device with final software so we can put it through it’s paces and write a full report.

Attached is Nokia’s press release detailing the platform:

Maemo 5 injects speed and power into mobile computing

The new Nokia N900: Computer-grade performance in a handset

Espoo, Finland – Nokia today marked the next phase in the evolution of Maemo software with the new Nokia N900. Taking its cues from the world of desktop computing, the open source, Linux-based Maemo software delivers a PC-like experience on a handset-sized device.

The Nokia N900 has evolved from Nokia’s previous generation of Internet Tablets and broadens the choice for technology enthusiasts who appreciate the ability to multitask and browse the internet like they would on their desktop computer.

Running on the new Maemo 5 software, the Nokia N900 empowers users to have dozens of application windows open and running simultaneously while taking full advantage of the cellular features, touch screen and QWERTY keyboard.

“With Linux software, Mozilla-based browser technology and now also with cellular connectivity, the Nokia N900 delivers a powerful mobile experience,” says Anssi Vanjoki, Executive Vice President, Markets, Nokia. “The Nokia N900 shows where we are going with Maemo and we’ll continue to work with the community to push the software forward. What we have with Maemo is something that is fusing the power of the computer, the internet and the mobile phone, and it is great to see that it is evolving in exciting ways.”

Designed for computer-grade performance in a compact size, Maemo complements Nokia’s other software platforms, such as Symbian, which powers Nokia’s smartphones.

“Just as Nokia continues to expand and diversify its device portfolio, so it is deploying multiple platforms to allow it to serve different purposes and address different markets. While we have seen continued growth in Symbian as a smartphone platform, Maemo enables Nokia to deliver new mobile computing experiences based on open-source technology that has strong ties with desktop platforms,” says Jonathan Arber, Senior Research Analyst in Consumer Mobile at IDC.

More multitasking with Maemo

The Nokia N900 packs a powerful ARM Cortex-A8 processor, up to 1GB of application memory and OpenGL ES 2.0 graphics acceleration. The result is PC-like multitasking, allowing many applications to run simultaneously. Switching between applications is simple, as all running content is constantly available through the dashboard. The panoramic homescreen can be fully personalized with favorite shortcuts, widgets and applications.

To make web browsing more enjoyable, the Nokia N900 features a high-resolution WVGA touch screen and fast internet connectivity with 10/2 HSPA and WLAN. Thanks to the browser powered by Mozilla technology, websites look the way they would on any computer. Online videos and interactive applications are vivid with full Adobe Flash™ 9.4 support. Maemo software updates happen automatically over the internet.

Messaging on the N900 is easy and convenient thanks to the full physical slide-out QWERTY keyboard. Setting up email happens with only a few touches and the Nokia Messaging service mobilizes up to 10 personal email accounts. Text message or IM exchanges with friends are shown in one view and all conversations are organized as separate windows.

The Nokia N900 has 32GB of storage, which is expandable up to 48GB via a microSD card. For photography, the Maemo software and the N900 come with a new tag cloud user interface that will help users get the most out of the 5MP camera and Carl Zeiss optics. The Nokia N900 will be available in select markets from October 2009 with an estimated retail price of EUR 500 excluding sales taxes and subsidies. The Nokia N900 will be displayed at Nokia World, Stuttgart, on September 2. More information on Maemo is available at nokia.com.

Michael Jerz from MySymbian has been testing the Nokia N900 for several weeks and has published a monster of a (p)review. This is, btw, of a Proto N900, so some findings may or may (have) change(d) with actual final production N900.

[N900: Positively small compared to its ancestors]

Skimming through the first page and it’s a fantastic hardware review already, but then there are 4 pages in total to more than satisfy your curiosity for the N900

Some interesting keypoints:

HARDWARE PAGE 1

Keyboard – Michael confirms my initial impressions, N900 does indeed have much better tactile feedback, even goes as far as saying “The tactile feedback seems to be better also compared to the E90 keyboard, which feels softer.”

Processor – extremely positive here: There’s really NOTHING one could complain about when it comes to performance and functionality offered by N900’s processor, not only when it comes to the offered “raw speed” but also graphics, video and imaging acceleration.”

RAM - Yes we already know about the 256MB physical RAM and 768MB virtual. According to Michael, the N900 ends up with 50MB after boot, but hold your horses there. Michael explains that unlike Symbian, free RAM is half as important, as with virtual RAM you’ve got about 800MB free which means you won’t get to see out of memory errors. I tried opening up all the apps on the N900 myself and it handled them so smoothly. “Don’t expect to see any “Out of memory” errors on this machine. I tried really hard to get one, and I ended up having over TWO DOZEN of applications running at once and multiple browser windows open,”Performance does decrease slightly though as virtual RAM is being used instead of actual physical RAM (Michael says about 20%). Hmm…could N97 users also get some of this virtual memory love please?

The tilt on Michael’s proto unit is the same as the N97’s angle, but oddly was lower on final production N900 we used at onedotzero. Hopefully I you can set different angles and we just didn’t manage to do that.

The Camera quality is the same as N97 (Though I think it’s nice to have 16:9 option, even if it reduces to about 3mp).

The dual LED is weak as I expected. Boo. Oh well…I hope someone makes a torch app for it as that’s the most use I get out of my N97’s dual LED.

Build Quality – Solid as ever, except perhaps the tilt stand.

InfraRed – Michael wonders whether it will stay in final production handsets – it better had! The ones we tested were final production N900s and apparently they still had their infra red – plus videos have apparently demoed N900 controlling a TV via IR, so they they can’t just tease us with a feature they’re going to take out. They might as well have shown N900 with XENON flash!

Audio loudspeaker quality – Michael notes subjectivity here. I found N900 speakers to be quite loud, and clear. Definitely better than N97, I think some long time N900 users have noted it’s better than N95 (which was the benchmark of Nokia phone loudspeakers – though nothing yet has surpassed the N800 – Booklet 3G doesn’t count)

GPS – considerably faster than say N97 (When N97 behaves it gets a fast GPS lock – but it can have problems maintaining it if you’re in a vehicle)

Compass – Michael says “apparently missing” – interestingly, N900 recognizes direction within a couple of metres. I’ve always thought that would be the easiest solution – just work out direction of movement (like google maps, note how it shows you the arrow pointing in direction of movement) but then possibly orientate the map in the direction you’re going, thus aligning with with your surroundings similar to what a digital compass attempts.

Battery life…hmmm?

N900 hugs N97…”there, there, I maybe the flagship you should have been…but you’ve still got an interesting flip!”

These were some interesting points I found after a quick glance (have a 9AM lecture to go to in a sec)

SOFTWARE PAGE 2

True Linux openness – you do what you want to do with your device. You can “do whatever you want, just like on a Linux desktop”

S60 applications of course aren’t compatible with N900, BUT, There is a much bigger developer base that are familiar with Linux than Symbian OS. You’ll have better quality apps than S60 and ultimately have the potential to run apps as good, if not better than what’s available for Apple’s iPhone.

Mostly a general description of applications/features on N900. Check it out here.

Switching between windows/closing windows is effortless. Although many say multitasking is being able to do several things at once, another angle of thought is that multitasking should be being able to switch easily and prioritise quickly the between selected applications. The N900 does this in spades.

SOFTWARE PAGE 3

Only grid view option available currently for N900. I don’t really mind as I don’t use list view in S60.

You cannot move or reorder icons or put them in folders! Noooooooooooooooooooo! (Well for now anyway. Nokia should really think about being able to SAVE menu layouts and distribute those type of menu layouts for other people to enjoy, so either the user themselves will NOT have to reorder all their icons and their friends or other people can enjoy the same layout without also having to reorder the menu)

Web – The reason my N800 is still with me to this day, and in occasional use. Beautifully done with Maemo’s 800X480 pixel screen. Not only can pages be easily fixed to fit width of the screen (so you don’t have to ever scroll left/right), you can also optionally view pages as they are (if you did want to be scrolling left/right). At the end of the year, there’ll be FireFox for N900 too so even better browsing!

Volume buttons can be used to resize pages (as does double tapping and that odd but very functional spiral motion)

Multiple windows – internet tablets have always had multiple windows but the N900 goes a step further by improving their management and stability. Possibly the best phone for surfing the web with the expectations of desktop experience?

Music: Supports management by album covers. Good codec support, “AAC, AAC+, eAAC+, M4A, MP3, WAV, and WMA.“

Video Playback – “simply OUTSTANDING,… playback is 100% smooth, without a single frame drop (tested with e.g. 800×480 5000 kbps content)“ I wonder how it will handle my DivX library. I didn’t get the chance to pop in one for testing – N800 also had smooth playback of my files (except faster action ones) but only via MPlayer. It had difficulty playing other files. Supposedly good news for N900, “Supported formats include 3GPP (H.263), AVI (including DivX/XviD etc.), Flash Video, H.264/AVC, MPEG-4 and WMV.”

There’s much more to go but I’m heading out now

SOFTWARE PAGE 4 (and conclusion)

Looks at the camera UI and other applications again, file manager, RSS Reader (very good one on N900/tablets) and games

Fantastic performance and stability, even for a PROTOTYPE (prototype hardware/unfinished software)

Beautiful and ADVANCED User Interface

“Symbian OS phones can only get one answer: they just DON’T compare. N900 is a wholy different league. If any of the existing mobile devices can be (honestly) called a mobile computer then the N900 deserves such a name in the first place.“

Check out the last page for the conclusion!

Pake Maemo device.

As an extension of a previous article on how to make Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs) compelling, I have decided to start a series devoting individual articles to particular use cases, one per article. I am using the broad term here because I’m not focusing on unique products or brands per se but rather the product type. Of course, knowing Nokia mobile computers (formerly internet tablets) as I do, many of my examples will relate to them. I welcome examples referencing competing products from readers.

I’m going to start with a use case that does not get a lot of attention but is near and dear to my analytical heart: mobile auditing and inspection in production, shipping or other operations. I really think the devices have a great deal of untapped potential here!

So stay tuned, and if you have a use case you would like to see explored, feel free to mention it!

At Nokia World, Nokia showed off the Nokia N810 tablet with 3D capabilities. Thankfully, you’ll be able to see the 3D effect without glasses. Nokia will launch this 3D technology on a mobile phone in the future, but it won’t be the N810 – they’re just showing off the technology. Apparently, Nokia “has been working on 3D phones for ’several years.’”
