Home-Base Business.

5+25+125+625+3125 X US$1.0=US$3905
US$3905X33=NT$12萬8865

Mac Journal 5 – Tagebuch

Cha-Ching 2 – Finanzverwaltung

3D Image Commander – 3D Effekte und Overlays für Grafiken

Cocktail – System Utility

CrossFTP Pro – FTP Client

Data Guardian – Passwort und Informationsverschlüsselung

Mac DVDRipper Pro – DVDs auf dem Rechner speichern

Sleep Blaster – iTunes Wecker

Super Flexible File Synchronizer – Backup und Synchronisierung

Mac Snapper – eLearning/Tutorial Erstellung

Pagico Professional – Kalender und Personal Information Manager

TranslateIt!

Flash Decompiler Trillix 4 – Dekompiliert Flash swf Dateien

Also werde ich vermutlich passen.

I received the following email today from a Chinese “entrepreneur”.

The email is a rather exaggerated attempt at selling Chinese domain name registrations via the 87Global.hk web site.

The email sender’s reply address @ “Registry-China.org” redirects to 87Global.hk – a domain which in turn was registered by “Wang Yugen”.

The site also has a form for registering the following extensions including .Com.Cn domains albeit – at unbelievably high prices.

The .Com.Cn domain is an interesting extension. I am not sure how it came about, but Google already finds about 524,000,000 pages with “com.cn” in them.

.com.cn

I am sure if I did some digging, I would find that both site’s have content that was either – in whole or in part – copied and pasted directly from known and reputable registrar sites.

What I am not sure of is whether anyone has ever registered a domain successfully through either one of the two domains mentioned above.

If you have an interest in registering your brand or brands in foreign markets and instead of risking domain registration with an unknown registrar, visit Internic to find an accredited registrar for the country and language you plan to register in.

Incidentally, none of the above Chinese “registrars” are listed on Internic’s page of accredited registrars.

Good corporate citizenship is a concept so established that some large companies even have someone t

Good corporate citizenship is a concept so established that some large companies even have someone to ensure they comply with their “corporate social responsibility”, usually as a small but important part of their “corporate governance”. In short, everyone tries to do the right thing in a way that does not hamper (much) the way they go about their business. That usually means avoiding any activity that borders illegality (kickbacks, harassments), not being unduly pushy against particular interests, and finding a way to “give back” to their surrounding society some part of the profit. That’s the short version; if you want a long version, I’m proud to say my father does consulting and teaching on the subject of CSR and business ethics, and he would be pleased to expand.

But to the point. On the web, there is a large number of grey or dark activities that can’t happen without the participation of third parties. A paedophile can’t send his pictures without an email account, nor host them for sharing without a file hosting service. A site promoting odious ideology or activities can’t work without web hosting, or without someone providing DNS addressing for it. A pirate can’t distribute proprietary content without someone cooking and setting up a network, and without websites where those wares are advertised and even hosted (which, again, rely on third-party services). A spammer can’t work without… well, you get the idea.

Indeed, most legislations make those third parties responsible for the good use and monitoring of their services. And most services have clear terms of use that allow them to legitimately discontinue contracts that contravene any of a series of legal or logical boundaries.

Of course, there is the issue of viability. It is not viable to vet and analyze every user and customer. That doesn’t mean it is not possible, it means there is not remotely profitable way to do it for large volumes of users.

Viable ways to do the right thing online

That has two answers: automatic filtering, and exception handling.

Some people like CafePress.com have an image-analysis system that automatically hunts any image that remotely resembles the logos or “trade dress” images of established companies (unconfortable for their customers, but healthy for the owners of those images); in many other instances, it is quite viable to install a system to find and recognize telltale signs of illegal or unhealthy behaviour.

Regarding exception handling, it has long been an established feature of email services and hosting companies to offer an “abuse@” email address, where spammers and other abusers can be reported. Making one such email clearly visible, and attending it fast, is the very minimum level of corporate netizenship needed. For instance, TinyPic.com doesn’t do any filtering (and thus host loads of indecent, stolen or illegal content) but it has a very responsive system: once they are told, they remove the offending piece. Others have less easy to find contacts but answer fast and well.

The alternative to these measures, when you offend too many people, are suits such as those brought against YouTube. Or (worse) direct legislation such as now governs the handling of user data and direct mail in many jurisdictions, imposing costs regardless of their effect on business models.

The profiteers

Some companies don’t either filter or react to whistle-blowers. This is particularly common with DNS services, where InterNIC comes to mind: they recently reacted over a week later to urgent demands of action against child pornography, and then argue that they no longer can find the offending picture…

Others ignore their responsibility. Some ISPs are cheeky enough to argue that “housing” an offending site (i.e. providing service and internet connection to a box owned by the customer), as opposed to “hosting” (renting the box to the customer, too), means they have no responsibility on the content they’re shipping out to the world or the behaviour of the users of that service. A certain Dutch ISP comes to mind (no, I don’t want to send them more sleazy business by advertising their lack of moral fibre).

Last but not least, quite a few companies run online services or sites that positively depend on illegal or at least “grey” behaviour on the side of users. For instance, the plethora of sites that host “torrent” addresses to pirated software or content. Or the variety of porn forums that depend on stolen content. Or forums and blogs hosts (some belonging to known newspapers) that conscientiously ignore abuse, defamation or worse in some of their published content. Again, names are advertising.

All these make profits on the backs of the people hurt by their customers’ and users’ behaviour, and don’t provide the minimum measures to staunch it. In economic terms, they live because they don’t have to pay for the damage their business wreaks on the rest of us (externalities). In ecological terms, they contaminate like crazy and pay no penalty for it.

It can be done

As we’ve seen, there are ways to do things better. And there are even more. Forums like Macuarium.com’s positively prohibit and effectively prevent any public hint of piracy, defamation or odious behaviour, through constant monitoring and active exception handling. It is now perfectly possible to scan images to detect telltale signs of porn, or of registered trademarks. Having a good “abuse@” desk is among the simplest measures in the book.

As the internet becomes civilised, more and more of those measures will be legally mandated. Even sooner, the industry will find it worthwhile to start behaving as responsible netizens… even if maverick irresponsible people continue to help others hurt the online citizenry.

If you are involved in any of those businesses (hosting, content, forums), lose the fear. There are viable things you can do to minimize the damage done, and some of them make sense for business as well.

Hello again. It’s been a busy time.

Not just with the holiday presents (as you know, Spanish holidays extend to Jan 6th with the feast of the Three Wise Men). We’ve had a happily-resolved, but nevertheless very revolting clash with the worst type of Internet denizen. We’re still digesting the event but there are a couple of things that I believe can be useful for anybody with an interest in safely running online communities.

Everyone knows, at least in the abstract sense, that out there lurk ethically deformed people. Some are sick, some are depraved. The net has given us all a means of contact that makes it even harder to screen them out than face to face. We build some barriers, we avoid some practices. Sadly, “we” is not everyone.

Specifically, there is a very large online community out there where eminently normal people play to their baser callings: exchanging stolen pornography and tips on whorehouses is the fare of the place, addled with some cooler leisure topics that attract a large audience. While doing this, they slum with the kind of people that live in that atmosphere, not just dip in it. For them, hinting at child pornography or rape is not just a game. If it were a bar, it would be downright seedy, and a bit dangerous. But it’s the net, isn’t it, so it’s not real – and so, over one hundred thousand members crowd those forums and many more crawl them.

That forum is the brainchild (to give it a decent name) of a professional freak that poses as a depraved in any media that asks for it. He has apparently been involved with the Justice for sex with underage boys, all rejected after the emergence of tapes in which the minors recorded their consent. Whether that was a ploy for notoriety or an underhand settlement, our lawyers don’t know.

Some months ago, there was a conversation on one community-management list about whether the existence of that kind of online environments was good, bad or irrelevant for paedophiliacs and potential predators. Well, now I’ve seen an example, and I know what happens: they egg each other on, and apparently normal people cheer from the sidelines.

The story

At the start of this year we (the Macuarium team) detected a thread in that forum in which a person who knew our own forums well was trying to stir up a “forum assault”. He lifted pictures of members from our site, including two of minors, wrote extensive abuse about us and very obscene phrases about the minors, and harangued his forum-mates to do to us what they seem to have done several times in the past: shut down the forum by using a deluge of extremely foul trolling and revolting pictures. And when I say “revolting”, I mean gruesome images of real burned, shot or squashed people, rape images and child pornography. I have not seen more than one of the examples we found, and I’ll probably remember it for a long long time; and no, I won’t be linking to their footprints here. They are indeed enough to cause havoc, regardless of many other considerations.

They do that until they have laughed enough at the victim’s defense attempts and cries for mercy. Also, they apparently have done it before with the full collaboration of the forum administration, in secrecy. They have a methodology for it, indeed…

Before having a clear picture of who was behind that place, we started documenting the thread. We tried to contact their administrators and site owners to call for the removal of the thread. We also contacted their ISP and DNS providers. To no avail. We could see the attack preparations gather pace (by that time we were actively monitoring several things) as the scheduled time of attack approached (23.00 in our time zone).

We didn’t raise public alarms as that would most likely only cause confusion and the kind of notoriety evidently enjoyed by the attacker, but we got ready to stop, mop and counter the attack. Sadly most of the details can’t be made public yet, but our team really made me proud.

We went to the police too, of course. But we also had to take down the doctored child pictures, which we did by asking the image hosting service. They complied, and the pervert asnwered by uploading new and extremely gross doctorings of the picture on a different server, one without privacy policy, user registration or visible means of contact.

When we managed to pull that version down too, the denizens of the other forum were quite certain they were being watched, even as they plotted, recruited and started to register themselves in our forums for the attack. Finally, they probed the defenses a bit and gave up, already well into the night.

Next day, an administrator closed the remains of the attack thread (we’d already hunted down all unauthorised sources of images) without removing the abuse. Finally, late yesterday the thread was pulled off.

It’s not finished. We don’t trust them, and we aren’t done with them either.

Surf discreetly and carry a big stick

And we’ve taken a harder eye to pictures and activities of minors on our forum. We always monitor these, and we have always been very fast to block actions that should not be done without parental support. We’re proud to be much more family-friendly than the average TV programme, and a safe environment for online children, but there’s things that would make anybody paranoid.

There’s despicable people out there that allow anything in order to thrive: some ISPs, some site owners. There’s stupid people out there that can’t tell the difference between some slumming and actually hurting themselves or other people. And there’s evil people out there, some sick enough to think that kind of behaviour is somehow “cool”.

There’s also sensible and efficient people who try to protect their community members, adults and children, even in the middle of the night of their Christmas holidays. If you don’t have a team of them around in your online community, you better get some.

I knew about some of the dregs of the internet. I’ve fought off two “forum invasions” previously. But this week’s events (and especially our own investigations of the new foe) made me see much more clearly just how neccesary it is to stand watchful and have a very good team to rely on, and how thin is the line between normality and seeing your child’s picture doctored into pornography and posted visibly on the net.
