Because of this, more and more countries are now required to have English as their second language. In order for them to manage their business well, they need to know more about the English language and its native as well.

2009 has been a turbulent year both personally and for the world around me. Looking back at the last

2009 has been a turbulent year both personally and for the world around me. Looking back at the last twelve months, I guess many people can say that. Unemployment is still up; We are still at war in Iraq and Afghanistan; Partisanship continues to reign supreme in Washington; Divisiveness among our neighbors and communities is sharper than ever.

Personally, I have been out of work for more months than I care to mention. However, the fact that money is tight is the least of my worries. So, what am I thankful for? The usual suspects of course, family and friends and a roof over my head. But this year I am looking outward. For better or for worse, these are the landmarks in a ‘year in the life’ of Lorraine M. Pasquali.

January 20: I stood on the mall in Washington, D.C. and witnessed history. I have written a rather lengthy description of Obamastock 2009, but here is the last paragraph: At the hotel we have our own little post-Inauguration party. We watch the parade and continued news coverage on TV. And that’s when it hits me. I don’t know who said it, but I hear for the first time, “President Obama” uttered by a reporter. Reality check. Yes kids, Barack Obama really is the President of the United States. We look around at each other, exchange a few hugs and high fives and smile. “We did it!”

President Barack Obama: A snapshot of our nation and our world on inauguration day includes a deep recession, spiraling health care costs, two expensive wars with no end in sight, an out-dated, under-funded educational system, a host of environmental issues, rising energy costs, and a divided electorate eager for someone to blame. In the face of all that adversity, this man stood on the capital steps and took the oath of office, took responsibility for righting the ship. He will, most likely and most unfortunately, be judged on the failures of a previous administration, but he took the job anyway. God speed, Mr. President.

Internet technology: The opportunity to reach out and touch someone in new ways. Facebook has opened the door to the past and brought back into my life old friends, helped me keep in touch with long distance friends and introduced me to new friends. Twitter, youtube, myspace, and my new favorite, WordPress all have given me an outlet to express myself, ask questions, vent my frustrations, and share my ideas. Beyond networking and sharing, there is the job hunt. Web sites and list serves such as idealist.org, New Organizing Institute and Work for Change (Just to name a few) allow me to cast an ever wider net as I look for the right job, the right fit.

Wendell Potter: A former insurance company insider now whistle blower, Mr. Potter left the industry on good terms. He had no axe to grind. He got his golden parachute and could have sailed away quietly. Once on the outside, however, he saw the injustice and felt the need to speak truth to power. I was so moved by his appearance on Bill Moyers Journal that I spent the last 6 months campaigning for health care reform.

Alan Grayson, Freshman Representative from Florida: In spite of the conciliatory nature of his Democratic colleagues, Congressman Grayson has been an outspoken advocate for health care reform and a strong public option. Apparently, he isn’t aware of the unwritten rule that senior members of Congress are large and in charge and he is supposed to sit on his hands with his mouth shut, waiting his turn to be heard. I hope he never learns that lesson.

Campaign for public office: My run for Northampton County Council was unfortunately, unsuccessful. Although I didn’t win, with more than 10,000 votes, I didn’t finish last either! It was one of those character building experiences that takes you way out of your comfort zone and teaches you some important lessons. I know who I can trust and who I can lean on. I know that there are circumstances that are beyond my control and times when I need to take control. I know what it feels like to be slandered by a complete stranger and what it feels like to be thrown under the bus by someone you thought you knew. Am I thankful for that? Yes, as I am stronger and wiser for the experience.

At this time last year, I was sleeping off a 10 month roller coaster ride that brought much needed changes along with some unexpected results. This year, the uncertainty continues, but I have proven to myself that I can persevere. And so I give thanks for what the sports world would call a rebuilding year.

Nature and Animal Conservation

Preserving species and their habitats is important for ecosystems to self-sustain themselves. Yet, the pressures to destroy habitat for logging, illegal hunting, and other challenges are making conservation a struggle.

Visit : http://www.globalissues.org/article/1…

What is Biodiversity ?

The variety of life on Earth, its biological diversity is commonly referred to as biodiversity. The number of species of plants, animals, and microorganisms, the enormous diversity of genes in these species, the different ecosystems on the planet, such as deserts, rainforests and coral reefs are all part of a biologically diverse Earth.

Appropriate conservation and sustainable development strategies attempt to recognize this as being integral to any approach. Almost all cultures have in some way or form recognized the importance that nature, and its biological diversity has had upon them and the need to maintain it. Yet, power, greed and politics have affected the precarious balance.

Does it really matter if there arent so many species?

Biodiversity boosts ecosystem productivity where each species, no matter how small, all have an important role to play.

For example, a larger number of plant species means a greater variety of crops; greater species diversity ensures natural sustainability for all life forms; and healthy ecosystems can better withstand and recover from a variety of disasters.

And so, while we dominate this planet, we still need to preserve the diversity in wildlife.

Loss of Biodiversity and Extinctions

It is feared that human activity is causing massive extinctions. From various animal species, forests and the ecosystems that forests support, marine life. The costs associated with deteriorating or vanishing ecosystems will be high. However, sustainable development and consumption would help avert ecological problems.

So I did a bad thing and completely abandoned this blog, and I honestly can’t state a single reason why. I enjoyed writing the posts, but I realize they are entirely too long. My big idea for my blog was that I would set the foundation over the first couple of weeks and later begin on the actual blogging–the more convention, what the hell happened to me today kinda stuff. As that time approached, I realized how much my life sucked and how little I would be able to contribute, perhaps.

Only kidding. I highly doubt many previous readers are going to come running once they say this–that is, if they remember. I know some of the posts still receive some comments, although I have been negligent by never responding. :-/ I know there haven’t been all that many comments regarding the GED, but I’ve had some rather interesting feedback and realize that there are people who are still very anxious about taking the test. Perhaps I will be able to pick up where I left off and also help reduce some readers’ uncertainty regarding the test.

In other news, I am no longer 23. I am still in college but my GPA is no longer perfect, but it is not below 3.91. Other than that, not much else has changed. Probably not looking good for the blog.

Below is the summary of what I typed in one of my other blogs by the same title as this post:

It seems that every couple months I get the feeling that something is missing. I wonder what it is and then move on. I try blogging; it helps for a bit and then i forget or get too busy with my life: my job and academics. Any way this blog is going to filled with randoms things I find interesting, important, funny, or overall necessary. Some of it will be based on my life, some of it on my faith, and some of it on the overall state of whatever I chose.

But as another brief overview, I am an Army Brat (PROUD TO BE ONE) and will forever be one. On top of that I am Roman Catholic (again proud to be), spazztic, overall energic, do way too much, sleep way too little, and well….we shall see throughout this journey what I am on any given day.

On June 14, 2009…I sat in Church listening to a homily on the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ, which made sense because that day was the feast of Corpus Christi. The fact that the homily was on that topic nor that it was semi-scolding surprised me; it was the fact that it was the first time that I felt at home at St. William of York in a long long time. Now that feast day was the perfect one to for me to feel welcome home again at because it was this feast day that came to be because of a doubting Priest. It reminds me that even those in the Holy Orders have doubts…or at least can doubt.

So…I guess this means it is possible to have TWO parish homes…both have amazing communities … one large the other small. As I am active in both, I find myself happy to be have such a welcome home from Our Lord.

On June 20th I blogged about the fact that I had been engaged in amazing conversations with God, which has lead to much but best of all some amazing music, a blog to follow, and a way (or many) to become more spiritual. At mass that day, it was like God was talking straight to me through Father D. The homily was a mix of things but one thing really stuck me: No is an acceptable answer. Fr. D. was talking about No as an answer to a prayer but it applies to commitments and life in general.

Accepting and Saying No are both things I am having trouble with. Accepting no from a person is hard but even harder is accepting NO or simply no answer at all from the Heavenly father. During that summer (2009), I was very busy with summer courses’ homework, Girl Scouts, and life in general. I experienced the need to say no; a lesson that i am not sure I will ever truly comprehend but hey, one just needs to keep trying.

I have had this blog for a while, and I haven’t really done anything with it. I feel like I ha

I have had this blog for a while, and I haven’t really done anything with it. I feel like I have blogs scattered all over the internet with a few (or none at all) entries. I have two old LiveJournals, a few blogger-er things, and a tumblr. I haven’t really bonded with any of them aside from my ancient LJ accounts. So I am going to try to be committed to this one. I miss blogging! It’s been years since I faithfully wrote and posted photos and things every day or every other day. So here’s to yet another new blog… and please feel free to add me on Myspace, check out my Etsy store, and watch my ridiculously awkward and amateur YouTube channel!

Anyway… it’s the day before Thanksgiving and I’m desperately trying to help organize and tidy up the house because my family is coming over tomorrow, which I’m excited about. I made butternut squash and sweet potato soup yesterday, it turned out deliciously.

I am so stressed out with college… which is almost over for the semester, but I have a presentation and paper, a lab report, my thesis, two history papers, a lab practical, two more lab tests, my biology final, a final in Psych 22 and some other things to finish/get done/study for.

Y I K E S

I am pretty excited for tomorrow, for Christmas (I celebrate this)/Hanukkah (my boyfriend’s family celebrates this, and I enjoy going over around that time, their house always smells good). I can’t wait to start Christmas shopping, having more time to myself and being able to start taking more photos.

I feel as though I’m trying to cram so much into this first blog. I’m not good at them at all.

I’m a makeup fiend… I just thought I’d put it out there. I don’t wear a lot of makeup all the time, but I am somewhat of a makeup collector and junkie. When I graduated from drug store brands (only because they BREAK my skin out and irritate my eyes because my skin is so, so, too, too sensitive) I was definitely a MAC person… now I am sort of over them, aside from their lipsticks. I am definitely a Sephora frequenter. I thought you should know.

I love wearing red lipstick even though it doesn’t flatter me.

I have so many pairs of beautiful high heels that I am in love with but rarely wear because I am self-conscious of the sound they make on the floor in the hallways of my college. I also talk softly because I dislike my voice, I think they have something to do with one another. I tend to wear flats and boots.

Maybe I’ll start wearing my heels… and getting over thinking I’m making too much noise.

I’m also afraid of the sound cotton balls make when you rip them apart or drag them along the surface of something. It’s an absolutely repulsive and disgusting sound that is 100,000,000 times worse than nails on chalk board to me.

That is all.

This entry was scattered, but oh well it’s the first. As I said I’m bad at these!

my feet

Anaesthesia can be terribly simple or simply terrible goes a popular saying. Each day is spent providing anaesthesia care shovelling long hours into the quagmire of altered patient physiology. While we go about handling the patient’s vitals with the surgeon’s demands juxtaposed, current advances and practices remain elusive to the learning curve.

This blog is an earnest attempt, a tiny step none the less, to help keep ourselves abreast with the latest fads, nuances and gizmos that seem to gather more attention than the patient at times!

Having got a feeler of this medical specialty coined snooze science for over a year, the quintessence to our profession lies buried beneath tons of written text, ever evolving journal articles and clinical trials. The segment on journal entries shall give you a brief insight, be it a difficult case, recent technique, drug formulation or just an observation.

Minute details about Anaesthetic implications and management in various conditions can go amiss with our daily routine. E books in pdf and pdb formats can prove quite handy while on the go or in the operating room. The segment on e resources and books will give you a definite edge.

Current advances in anaesthetic techniques and paraphernalia prove to be to be quite cumbersome to master with forever evolving trends. A news segment focussing on recent advances will give u a brief synopsis of what the future holds in store.

Orthopaedic chaps cannot find ,let alone drill, the funny bone as often as we do, no matter how hard they try! A fun section will ease all those tense non paralysed muscles on your forehead a wee bit, I hope. Heck, we could have a TOF watch monitoring that because that’s what we do exclusively intraop!

Any input in the form of posts, comments and contributions would be deeply appreciated.

With hope that we make some ripples, here is me signing off with a borrowed quote from Edward Lorenz’s chaos theory, “something as small as the flutter of a butterfly’s wing can ultimately cause a typhoon halfway around the world”.

Cheers

AUTHOR’S PREFACE

In which it is proved that, notwithstanding their names’ ending in OS and IS, the heroes of the story which we are about to have the honor to relate to our readers have nothing mythological about them.

A short time ago, while making researches in the Royal Library for my History of Louis XIV, I stumbled by chance upon the Memoirs of M. d’Artagnan, printed–as were most of the works of that period, in which authors could not tell the truth without the risk of a residence, more or less long, in the Bastille–at Amsterdam, by Pierre Rouge. The title attracted me; I took them home with me, with the permission of the guardian, and devoured them.

It is not my intention here to enter into an analysis of this curious work; and I shall satisfy myself with referring such of my readers as appreciate the pictures of the period to its pages. They will therein find portraits penciled by the hand of a master; and although these squibs may be, for the most part, traced upon the doors of barracks and the walls of cabarets, they will not find the likenesses of Louis XIII, Anne of Austria, Richelieu, Mazarin, and the courtiers of the period, less faithful than in the history of M. Anquetil.

But, it is well known, what strikes the capricious mind of the poet is not always what affects the mass of readers. Now, while admiring, as others doubtless will admire, the details we have to relate, our main preoccupation concerned a matter to which no one before ourselves had given a thought.

D’Artagnan relates that on his first visit to M. de Treville, captain of the king’s Musketeers, he met in the antechamber three young men, serving in the illustrious corps into which he was soliciting the honor of being received, bearing the names of Athos, Porthos, and Aramis.

We must confess these three strange names struck us; and it immediately occurred to us that they were but pseudonyms, under which d’Artagnan had disguised names perhaps illustrious, or else that the bearers of these borrowed names had themselves chosen them on the day in which, from caprice, discontent, or want of fortune, they had donned the simple Musketeer’s uniform.

From the moment we had no rest till we could find some trace in contemporary works of these extraordinary names which had so strongly awakened our curiosity.

The catalogue alone of the books we read with this object would fill a whole chapter, which, although it might be very instructive, would certainly afford our readers but little amusement. It will suffice, then, to tell them that at the moment at which, discouraged by so many fruitless investigations, we were about to abandon our search, we at length found, guided by the counsels of our illustrious friend Paulin Paris, a manuscript in folio, endorsed 4772 or 4773, we do not recollect which, having for title, “Memoirs of the Comte de la Fere, Touching Some Events Which Passed in France Toward the End of the Reign of King Louis XIII and the Commencement of the Reign of King Louis XIV.”

It may be easily imagined how great was our joy when, in turning over this manuscript, our last hope, we found at the twentieth page the name of Athos, at the twenty-seventh the name of Porthos, and at the thirty-first the name of Aramis.

The discovery of a completely unknown manuscript at a period in which historical science is carried to such a high degree appeared almost miraculous. We hastened, therefore, to obtain permission to print it, with the view of presenting ourselves someday with the pack of others at the doors of the Academie des Inscriptions et Belles Lettres, if we should not succeed–a very probable thing, by the by–in gaining admission to the Academie Francaise with our own proper pack. This permission, we feel bound to say, was graciously granted; which compels us here to give a public contradiction to the slanderers who pretend that we live under a government but moderately indulgent to men of letters.

Now, this is the first part of this precious manuscript which we offer to our readers, restoring it to the title which belongs to it, and entering into an engagement that if (of which we have no doubt) this first part should obtain the success it merits, we will publish the second immediately.

In the meanwhile, as the godfather is a second father, we beg the reader to lay to our account, and not to that of the Comte de la Fere, the pleasure or the ENNUI he may experience.

This being understood, let us proceed with our history.

It is true to say tat we are all looking for something different from a relationship and that is because we are all so very different that is the complex beauty of the human race.

But there are some things that we should look for in a relationship that are constant and common to all humans of both sexes and they are;

We should always respect our partner and never even consider violence towards one another. It is impossible to add that we should never lose our temper with our partner because it is in our nature. But if you can remember that you might be losing your temper with the wrong person – your partner who is just an innocent bystander. Always try to think before you let your anger out.

If you do this then you will be also doing something that I personally believe is a key to a happy relationship and that is always treat your partner in a way that you would like to be treated.

It goes, almost, without saying that you should chat to your partner, tell them what makes you happy, then what makes you sad and then of course what gets under your skin. You’ll discover that you feel better and your partner will enjoy sharing and of course at a later date the opportunity to do the same to you, to chat and share.

One thing that I have found in the years that I have been around is that not only do relationship flourish when you are sharing they also bloom when you give your partner a little bit of privacy, some quiet time, to do what they want.

That may be a hobby, a walk with the dog or anything and you should always give your partner that space and freedom, yes it is true that we all need different things but there are only a very few humans who want to be completely isolated even if they say they do.

There is so much more to say on this subject and that happily is why I have a blog, but finally for today always remember that there are two people in a relationship and that they both need to be engaged in making the relationship work, if one isn’t pulling his or her weight then he or she needs to be reminded that a relationship is a precious thing and like all precious things it isn’t difficult to break them.

Earlier this month new legislation was passed which allows police to stop and search people at a whim. Within designated areas (asked for by the Police Commissioner), police officers no longer need to be able to demonstrate ‘reasonable suspicion’ in order to stop and search anyone.

This could be you. Do you want to be treated like a criminal without any justification?

These laws will be focused mainly on Northbridge, but the areas can be designated anywhere. Are we willing to let our city have areas where our civil rights are removed?

‘Reasonable suspicion’ is one of the fundamental foundations of the modern justice system.

We cannot allow our privacy and civil rights to be infringed upon.

Resistance to police searches will lead to legal action.

Police Minister Rob Johnson has said “I get people coming up to me all the time almost every day of the week saying, “Good on you Rob, you’re doing a great job, you stick in there don’t let the bastards grind you down.”

But I can tell you I have not had one person come up to me and say, “Minister, Rob,” whatever they want to call me, “I think you’re wrong about this, this that and the other.”

IF YOU THINK IT IS WRONG, LET HIM KNOW ABOUT IT. Let’s be the so-called “bastards” who grind him down.

I urge you to write emails, send letters and make phonecalls registering your disapproval of these new laws.

I like to think of myself as an athletic person. Truthfully, the difference between a great day and a good day is a really awesome workout. However, although I like to think of myself that way, it rarely adds up to any particular fitness accomplishments. I’ve run a 5k here and there (nothing longer! – at least in a race context), and I can barely do one pull up. That’s about all I’ve got under my belt, though I’m planning on running an 8k in the next week and hope to continue doing more racing in the future.

But…I USED to be able to do about 10 pushups before collapsing in a heap, crying and begging for mercy. No more! Since I started working out more regularly (one of the perks of my 9 to 5 office job), my body has exploded. Haha, okay, I exaggerate. But last night I thought to myself, well, I may as well do some pushups to warm up. Imagine my surprise when I busted out 15 pushups like it was nothing.

BAM. I love measureable progress.
