Hello Fellow Math Resource Teachers,

I am trying to see how math teachers would benefit from using a blog.  Sharing lesson ideas, asking questions and providing feedback to others.

Seems every day we’re presented with new opportunities and new challenges that in and of themselves present opportunities.  I call it being open to the possibilities, or occasionally utter the phrase “expand your universe of opportunities”.  Well, today is Blog Day One and I have to share that I’m kind of excited about this new tool.  I believe that more than ever before I may have something valuable to say.  I’ve certainly gained some perspective from experience that I didn’t have 22 months ago, and future Blog posts will touch on some of that experience.  I invite any and all to share in return.  I also intend to use this forum for thoughts and exchanges about aspects of being a trial lawyer, and about career and health issues in general.  We all have a lot to learn from one another.  Let’s let the learning begin.

Well, it is November, so I suppose you can’t expect too much; but yesterday, the sun shone, and in the shelter of the hawthorn bushes it almost felt like summer. Today the chooks are clinging to the ground and walking sideways to avoid being blown over. Yesterday, we trimmed back the hawthorns in preparation for the fox-proof (we hope!) fence being built in the coming weeks. This will give our six ladies a large, sheltered area safe from predators and allow us to enlarge the flock next spring. We have kept hens for over two years now, starting with three black rocks and expanding six months later with  two bluebells and a warren. It was love at first sight for me. They are very engaging birds, and I delight in watching their daily routines, their squabbles, the way they preen themselves, the hilarious flapping run up the drive to keep up with the leader, their dependence on each other as well as their independence. They are under my feet when I dig in the garden, and follow me to the kitchen door in the hope of getting a handful of sunflower seeds as a treat. They love dustbaths in shady places in summer and hate winter snow. Last winter the snow was so deep that they sank into it, and after the first foray refused to come out of the henhouse until we had cleared a path for them. I had the dubious pleasure of Dolly climbing onto my shoulder to avoid having to put her feet in the snow.

Step 1: Download the ISO (Disk image) file of the O/S you are going to install – I decided to stick with Ubuntu – currently in 9.10 as I use it already on my notebook – sometime ago I also tried Edbuntu – but didn’t like its software suite (a bit too elementary school as I recall) – I’ve also tried OpenSuse – really liked a couple of things, but I’ve gotten used to Ubuntu – and WinXP would probably run poorly on these boxes after putting on a Virus scanner and something to lock them down. I used 9.1 as it comes with the latest versions of Firefox and Open Office – updating these core applications in an older version of Ubuntu is possible but a pain for a newbie. There are some advantages with going to the LTS release of Ubuntu (8.04 I believe  – I think Dell uses that on the few boxes they ship with Ubuntu) but the many software updates in the newer build made it more than worth any future pain … well at least that’s the thought at the moment!

Step 2: Create the Install disk form the ISO imaage. – Went great.

Step 3: Install the O/S – (put disk in and startup). You might need to go into the BIOS settings and reconfigure them to boot off a disk if it is available. In my case the boxes had been setup to boot off a network – so I had to get into the BIOS and reset that – which turned out to be a bit of a challenge – no manuals came with them – and who knew a “Faulty Cable” error could be a symptom of trying to boot off a non-existent network. Anyways, once I figured it out – the install went great.

Step 4: Do an O/S update – even though 9.1 was only a few weeks old when I did this, there were still lots of available updates. They took forever to download – so I left the box overnight to complete the process.

Step 5:  Oops – one of my students has already spied the new box and wants to play – so I let him complete the Gimp assignment we are currently working on the ‘new computer’. Even though the used box he is working on is older and slower than the Windows machine he was working on, he reports the new machine O/S to be ‘zipier’ (if it’s not a word it should be) so I decide to have him help me do some speed tests to compare basic performance between the stock Windows boxes in the room and the ‘new’ Ubuntu box.

This part of the journey started when I got an email from someone in FISA (Independent Schools group here in BC) letting us know that we could get free computers through the Computers for Schools program. Now in my previous district we had used this program to obtain a number of computers and generally found the result less than satisfactory – computers were generally at the ‘end’ of their life span – and once we installed Windows together with locking them down with something like Deep Freeze, they didn’t perform very well.

Anyways – its now several years latter and I’m in a different location – money is still tight (the only constant in education).  So I go ahead and request 1 computer. Figure I’ll install Linux on it and see if it runs OK on the current Computers for Schools machines (P4, 512 MB, 40GB HD). Linux has a rep. (deserved?) for running well on older machines – and I figure without the same virus issues and lockdown requirements – it won’t have as much overhead to deal with. So I send in the form and get a nice call from the folk with the program – turns out they have a bunch of equipment available for free (usually there is a small shipping charge) if I pick it up. The catch is that I had wanted 1 computer – I get 20 and several printers – on a take it all or nothing basis. So my Principal and I take his truck and pick the stuff up. A quick visual examination suggests that the printers are probably due for recycling. The computers however, meet the basic spec and are high quality small case IBMs – built like a rock (they must weigh 20 lbs each!).

Next step – installing Linux.
