Good compilations are not common, this one is legendary. Where does one begin…we have Witchcraft, Danava, Big Business, Dungen, Black Mountain, Witch, The Sword, and Comets On Fire, not to mention a far out tune by the under valued Diamond Nights and a rare track from the ever elusive Parchman Farm. This record immortalized a time in the not too distant past where creative metal was prized. The wide range in production is obvious but in no way annoying, and there isn’t a stinker in the bunch. This compilation leans heavy on the Kemado roster which I can highly recommend sniffing out. If you want to see what tuneful stoner rock, blunt force doom, and prog metal is up to then Invaders is the jam, and for so cheap you really do owe yourself the experience.

Hye Kyeong and I had a relaxing time in Mui Ne and were enjoying all the local food but it was time

Hye Kyeong and I had a relaxing time in Mui Ne and were enjoying all the local food but it was time to move on. We were both dreading the bus ride to Hoi An and for good reason. It took us all night to reach Hoi An and it wasn’t a pleasant experience. At one point, we got off the bus at Nha Trang because they needed to clean the bus. We took out all of our stuff except we left our sunglasses in one of the racks. We got back on the bus and found that they were missing. Apparently, one of the cleaners took them and when we asked them about it, they got really defensive. Hye Kyeong was quite unhappy after that and swore she would never go on another open tour bus even though we had to take one from Hoi An to Hue. My feelings about the buses are mixed, as I like to have an authentic of an experience as possible and those buses are far from that. They only cater to foreigners so it’s impossible to interact with the locals. At the same time, Mui Ne is difficult to reach via train and normal buses.

We decided to skip Nha Trang, another popular beach destination, we figured it would be overflowing with tourists and those who cater to them and that we would constantly be surrounded by locals trying to push us into taking tours. Mui Ne is all the beach we needed. I wanted to spend the majority of our time seeing landmarks instead of just relaxing on the beach. When we arrived in Hoi An, we made our way from the bus stop to our guesthouse that was built in the mid-19th century. It’s an old-style wooden house that it is half-museum and half of it for sleeping. It has a great location, right next to the Market and in the middle of the Old Quarter. We spent the rest of the day walking around Hoi An and seeing the sights like the Japanese Covered Bridge, Assembly Halls, temples and a number of old houses and museums. Hoi An is definitely a charming town and has a more relaxing pace than a major city. Also, Hoi An has some of the best food in Vietnam, with cao lau which are flat noodles with bean sprouts, greens and pork slices and bahn xeo (crispy pancakes with herbs and rolled in rice paper and the delicious white rose (shrimp in rice paper and steamed). That night, we sat along one of the roads and ate outside at a group of restaurants. Each restaurant had a line of tables. We were served Bia or beer at around 5000 dong, which is like 30 cents a glass! Cheapest beer I’ve had and it was quite good too.

The next day we hired a taxi out to the ruins of My Son for dawn. We got there before the park opened and we were the first people there. We waited a bit for them to open the entrance and made our way in. It was absolutely goregous. The ruins on the lush jungle backdrop were out of this world. The Champa ruins reminded me of my experience in Belize and Guatemala with Tikal and Lammanai. Obviously, they are quite diffirent as the Champa have an Indian influence with statues of Hindu gods. Hye Kyeong and I spent the next few hours there wandering around the ruins and made our way back to Hoi An.

Once back in Hoi An, we book a flight from Hanoi to Saigon since we were eventually heading in that direction and we needed to make sure we made the flight to Hong Kong and onward to Busan. We spent the remainder of our time shopping for souvenirs (found a wonderful place where everything is locally made) and bought a few purses and scarves. After that, we dined on the best food Hoi An has to offer and even had some really good desserts thanks to the French colonial occupation. Hoi An is a must see if you are planning on visiting Vietnam for its food and just overall natural charm and beauty.

We spent two days in Hoi An and the next stop on our tour through Vietnam was Hue. We took the open tour bus for the last time and it took us about 5 hours to get there. The ride from Hoi An to Hue was particularly beautiful as we went through the muntains and a high road pass which divides Vietnam. North of the pass is sub-tropical and south of it is tropical. We also passed through Danang, which looked quite interesting.

Anyways, Hue is the former imperial capital of Vietnam. It is where the Nguyen Dynasty was situated. Because of that, there is a ton of stuff to see and do there. The first day there, we just walked around through the old city looking for restaurants that serve the local specialities. We walked for what seemed like forever to make it some street and that sells Banh Khoai, which is a “pancake” filled with bean sprouts, shrimp and pork. From there, we walked into the old city which is surrounded by a large wall. We ate at a restaurant that served some local specialities. I had frog legs and Hye Kyeong had a kind of seafood soup.

The next day, we asked our hotel to book us a tour to the DMZ in Vietnam, as I wanted to see a few of sites where major military engagements took place. Unfortunately, there is very little to see as all the forts, planes and tanks were disassembled for parts, so there was little to see of the American presence in Vietnam.

We woke up early in the morning for the tour to the DMZ. We rode our bus a few hours north of town, where we had a “free lunch”. After that, we headed north a bit and took a road towards Laos. At one point, we stopped over to look at a mountain which is called the Rockpile. It was a Marine outpost to send messages to Khe Sanh Combat Base. After that, we stopped at a bridge which was part of the Ho Chi Minh Trail and then went to Khe Sanh. As I said before, there wasn’t a whole lot to see but it was still interesting to see where the major battles in Vietnam took place. It was also interesting to experience another perspective, as the American perspective on the war is often seen from the protests for peace in the 60s, John Lennon and the sexual revolution to movies like Green Beret and Forrest Gump. For the Vienamese, it was a war for independence and the plaques under the pictures often had messages which were highly critical of the American involvement in the war. We saw a bit of that before at the Presidential Palace in Saigon and we would see a lot more of that in Hanoi. I thought it was enlightening to hear another perspective even though one that is slanted in another direction. I find that to be one of the best things about traveling for me. As a side note, I enjoyed listening to 60s music like the Byrds, CCR and Hendrix while on the buses and looking at nature of Vietnam.

After Khe Sanh, we took another really long bus ride to the Vin Moch tunnels just north of the old DMZ in Vietnam. That was probably the best part of the tour, as it was interesting to see how three hundred people lived underground for weeks at a time with only one toilet! I know that I would have gone crazy if I had to endure something like that. Still it is something to be admired.

After that, we took the bus down to Hue which took nearly four hours or so. All in all, while I enjoyed certain aspects of the your including the tunnels, it was just too much bus riding. It would have definitely been better to have hired a taxi to go at our own pace or even to have skipped it all together as such a lengthy tour puts a major toll on you when you only have two weeks for vacation.

That’s all for now…Next post will talk more about Hue, our train ride and Hanoi.

PAZHANI Each region in India has its own favourite god. Uttar Pradesh has Ram, Maharashtra has Ganes

PAZHANI
Each region in India has its own favourite god. Uttar Pradesh has Ram, Maharashtra has Ganesh, Andhra Pradesh has Balaji(Sreenivasan) and Tamilnadu has Pazhani Andavan(God), my namesake. As a name for children, both of us disliked it, without any reason. Taditionally, my son should have been given this name, being my father’s name; instead, we called him Sudhir.
One night my wife forgot to swith off the water pump. When she woke up at midnight, she asked me to chech it. By then, mud had entered the pipe and it had stopped, though motor was still alive. Wife thought of atonement by a visit to the famous temple, on the hill to at Pazhani.
There is a metre guage train from Palakad town to Pazhani, spelt Palani in their language. We, including Sudhir and my niece Usha, got out of the railway station, when we were greeted by the tongawallah: come, I shall take you to a hotel. As I was totally a stranger to the place, we got into the horse drawn cart and, in five minutes, we reached the town.
Don’t you want to do pal abhishekam?; the fellow seemed eager to please us.
Go to Pazhani and not wash the deity with milk ? It is like going to a barber, chitchat and come back without hair cut. (In the village, many people do it). So he took us to a milk shop, where Rs. seventy five was paid for ten litres of milk. That evening, we went round the town; dirty, narrow streets, unclean people, children in rags and plenty of tongas. The majestic hill with lights can be seen, but not the temple.
The next morning the same tongawallah, took us to the same milk shop. A huge brass vessel, containing milk was ready. How shall we carry it up the hill? No worry; a maid was ready at hand. Give her just Rs. 25, that is all. So we followed her, climbing thousands of well concreted step, two lane, and when we reached the entrance to the temple, we saw a long que.
Do not worry; I shall take you direct to the sanctum, give only Rs. ten, so we paid it and followed her. When we reached the sanctum by a short cut, the milk can and materials for pooja, like sandal sticks, coconut etc. were handed over to the poojary, not a brahmin, some other middle caste, and we went for Darshan and prayers, as direced by the maid, who promised to see us after half an hour.
The view from the top is worth all th trouble. Beng a single rock projecting above a vast plain, we can see the country side in all directions, as from an airoplane. Kodaikanal hills, a tourist spot with lake etc. could be seen in the horizon. In the night, the sky lit with stars is a real treat.
The golden chariot made at that time, is small of course, but cute! There is a large crowd when it is taken out from the cage, where it is safely kept. The temple itself is just ordinary. Tamilnadu is a land of thousands of grand temples, never damaged through the course of history, as invaders had had enough in the north.
When we met the maid again, she gave us each a mouthful of milk, the left over after pouring over the deity of Lord Subramanian, as is customary. The whole drama is to cheat the unsuspecting devotees. There was not a single drop of milk in the can! Near the temple we saw the notice: Rs. ten for milk abhishekam.
We saw people burning a piece of camphor on each step as a tribute to the Lord. During our next visit there, with Kishan, our common nephew, he and mysef, to give him compahy, had our heads shaven and photographed. That time we used the electic trolley, to climb up and down.

Joker & Jakes – 3KLane (L-Vis 1990 Dubble Step Edit)

We Must Demand Complete & Immediate Withdrawal from Afghanistan

By Mike Ely

I think what is posed in Medea Benjamin’s interview is a rather simple and important question: Can U.S. imperialism and its troops play a positive role in some circumstances?

Given the history of the last century, how can we imagine U.S. forces as protectors of women's rights?

The U.S. invades the remote and impoverished Afghanistan in 2001, topples the fragile regime of Taliban theocrats (which never consolidated countrywide power in the civil war). And now it is argued that the U.S. invaders “can’t” leave in an “irresponsible” way because the survival of a number of people (including women’s activists) would be in danger and because their withdrawal would most likely mean a return of the Taliban.

Should we carefully evaluate U.S. aggressions on a case-by-case basis? Is this U.S. military base good, and that one bad? Is this U.S. bombing helpful, and that one excessive? Is this U.S. nuclear threat helpful, and that one unfair? Is this U.S. drone doing good work, and that one intruding dangerously? Is this U.S. occupation shielding and promoting positive forces — while that U.S. occupation cultivates more negative puppets? Do we support U.S. domination until someone better comes along (who we approve of) to take their place?

Or does the U.S. military (globally and everywhere) represent a coherent means of imposing and enforcing a particular global order on humanity generally — an order that is rooted in horrific oppression and exploitation (including the widespread commodification of women as both workers and sexual slaves, and the traditional domestic servitude of literally billions of women and girls)?

What we need is a clear uncompromising unapologetic position:

We must demand that U.S. imperialism leave Afghanistan immediately and unconditionally — without finding ways to prop up residual collaborators and puppet forces, without continuing to “provide air cover” for continuing war crimes.

The Afghanistan people need to be left to resolve their political affairs (and develop their own very difficult struggle for liberation) without U.S. domination and violence.

And because this is apparently quite controversial (even on the left): We should deepen our own understanding that these armed forces cannot and will not help the people in any part of the world.

Are there other reactionary forces in the world? Taliban? Al Qaida? Saddam Hussein? Islamic theocrats in Iran? Somali warlords? French colonial troops? Genocidal Israeli settlers and commanders? Turkish military commandos? Russian death squads in Chechnia? Catholic priests and bishops doing their secret crimes against humanity? And so on. Of course.

There are many other reactionary forces in the world. Some of them are U.S. allies. Some of them have sharp contradictions with U.S. imperialism. Some of them flip back and forth.

But U.S. occupation of Afghanistan (or Iraq) is itself a means of strengthening the world’s most odious and oppressive force. And the impact of a successful pro-U.S. pacification of Afghanistan cannot just be measured in terms of how it impacts people or sections of the people in Afghanistan. A victory for the U.S. in Afghanistan or stabilization of pro-U.S. arrangements in Afghanistan will be a major negative influence on the dynamics of the world as a whole.

This is true, objectively. And pointing out this truth is especially important within the U.S. itself — where illusions about the U.S. role in the world are especially strong (even on the left). Far too many people delude themselves that there can be a “more democratic U.S. foreign policy” that “helps” people. No, we have a special responsibility to fight the criminal actions of “our” government — and to expose its nature.

Our goal is not to “more effectively” serve “U.S. national interests.”

We do not seek to “improve the U.S. image around the world.”

We are not worried that “the wrong policies will get even more people to oppose U.S. initiatives.”

We do not want to “preserve and promote the American way of life.”

We don’t want to figure out some “people’s foreign policy” or some way for the fucking Marines to “play a good role.”

We don’t want a “more accountable CIA.”

No. We want to bring down U.S. imperialism from without and from within.

Not only must we demand that the U.S. withdraw immediately and without delay from its many overt and covert wars — but we must put forward a larger vision that the dismantling of all the vicious U.S. armed instruments of power is in the historic interests of humanity. That means the systematic and unilateral destruction of its nuclear arsenals, the disbanding of its armed forces, the abolition of its CIA, the public revelation of its crimes, the dismantling of its global military bases, listening posts and secret torture prisons, the destruction of its schools for coups and torture like the SOA, the scuttling of its imperial fleet and more.)

We should proclaim this publicly — knowing full well that these are not demands that the U.S. government would ever agree to, but they are a much needed program that only the people can carry out through historic actions.

The U.S. government, its military and spy forces, are a central prop of global capitalism at this stage in world history. And any confusion about this, any daydreaming that “maybe they can do some good,” needs to be explored and engaged.

Let’s deal with particulars:

1) Politics and social life in Afghanistan are rather awful.

That country is not a coherent nation-state and never has been. It is scattered and fragmented because of the feudal and tribal-patriarchal character of its social system, and that backward social character is reinforced by the impoverished, remote and mountainous nature of the countryside. Afghanistan has, historically, has one of the most extreme and oppressive traditional treatment of women. It was even mentioned by Marco Polo as he passed through centuries ago, and predates the rise of Islam.

As a result, the Afghani countryside is not ruled by the governments in Kabul, and never have been. The forces that the U.S. media calls “warlords” are (in effect) the modern feudal and tribal lords that rule various patches of land — greatly corrupted and empowered by the repeated arming and financing by imperialist powers.

In short, Afghanistan needs a very radical revolutionary movement — and the existing social conditions (of poverty, male supremacy, feudal agriculture, etc.) are intolerable.

But liberation will not come from the victory of one or another imperialist power.

2) There is a long and sad history of attempting to “bring” changes to Afghanistan by riding on the coattails of some invader. Yes there are some women’s activists in a few urban areas who have emerged from the shadows and operated with some protection from U.S. imperialism. And there were (in the 1980s) similar forces who staked their hopes on the Soviet imperialist invasion. And yes, such forces fear the withdrawal of the U.S. and its allies. And yes some of them may be forced into exile if the u.s. leaves.

But the point to draw from this is that liberation in Afghanistan has to come from a process that is anti-imperialist, and that engages the masses of people in their own liberation.

The theory that “modernity” (including women’s equality) can come from a U.S. imperialist occupation is (to put it mildly) a false theory. U.S. occupation will (at best) bring the “equality” of the Philippines sex trade and the Bangladeshi sweatshop.

And (in case anyone didn’t notice) the U.S. has been straining to cement alliances with “sections of the warlords and Taliban” (which means gathering an indigenous feudal base of support for a reliable puppet government). And (in case anyone didn’t notice) that has included the passage of a theocratic constitution and laws justifying marital rape, and more in areas of U.S. control. It is the U.S. (and its CIA) that empowered, armed, financed and unleashed the ugly theocratic forces in Afghanistan during the 1980s. And it is extremely naive (and tortured) to imagine scenarios where (somehow, somehow) a continued U.S. presence (or a slowed timetable of U.S. withdrawal) will somehow protect or help women.

3) There is a long history of sincere confusion whenever it is hard to find “good guys” opposing U.S. imperialism. We need to speak about this openly, and engage it clearly.

If the opponents of the U.S. seem to be “ugly” (by the standards of people watching from the U.S.) there is a clear tendency (including on the left) to be soft on the U.S. intervention.

“Perhaps the U.S. can do some good in Somalia.”

“Perhaps the U.S. can help drive Serb death squads out of Kosovo.”

“Perhaps U.S. threats against Iran can create openings for more progressive politics.”

“Perhaps delaying U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan will give progressive forces time to regroup and create an alternative to both Karzai and the Taliban.”

No.

Medea said:

“…we also heard a lot of people say they didn’t want more troops to be sent in and they wanted the U.S. to have a responsible exit strategy that included the training of Afghan troops, included being part of promoting a real reconciliation process and included economic development; that the United States shouldn’t be allowed to just walk away from the problem. So that’s really our position.”

No. We must DEMAND that the U.S. “walk away” — and we must be clear that the U.S. imperialism is a huge part of “the problem” and is NOT part of the solution. What kind of troops is the U.S. training? What kind of “reconciliation” process would the imperialists “promote”?

At the risk of being harsh, such views are not new.

In the time of Kipling and the global British empire, it was called “White Man’s Burden.” In the late 19th century, socialists (of a particularly patriotic kind) imagined that French or British or German or American colonialism would bring “progress” to the “savages” of the Third World — and that the arrival of capitalism would be an “advance” over their existing state. And the logic of this led straight into supporting “their” particular imperialists into the horrific trenches of World War 1.

4) People say “well if the U.S. doesn’t confront these awful forces, who will?” (Or “if the U.S. doesn’t promote “real reconciliation” who will?”)

And the answer is that in the absence of revolutionary forces there will often be NO ONE confronting awful forces or solving the horrific suffering of the people. There will not BE “reconciliation” in Afghanistan — and if one happened under U.S. promotion it would be to establish a terrible new order.

Here is a difficult truth of our time: Many many desperate problems of the people will not be solved under capitalism…. that is (in fact) one of the reasons that radical change is urgently needed.

5) Even if there are no visible “good guys” fighting the U.S. in Iraq or Afghanistan or wherever…. it is still wrong (very wrong) to support continued U.S. occupation.

If we mean by “good guys” (a term sarcastically lifted from the know-nothing vocab of rightwing idiots and cops) progressive, secular, radical forces. How do such progressive forces emerge? It is through struggle against oppression. They will not emerge as a byproduct of joining the U.S. sphere of influence. They will not emerge as junior partners of this vicious occupier. They certainly will not gain popular support by acting as collaborators with the American and European invaders.

New radical secular pro-socialist forces can only arise, gain popular traction, and make strategic progress only through consistent opposition to U.S. imperialism, and cannot conceivably emerge under its wing and protection. And we can’t be confused by the pleas of political forces who (however critically or uneasily) serve in the puppet government of Afghanistan or work for NGO’s in the penumbra of U.S. occupation. These forces (however liberal and forward-looking they may seem in comparison to the masses of pepole) are pursuing their own strategies, class interests and not-so-radical view of what progress means.

It strikes me as problematic to wish for a prolonged U.S. presences in order to buy time for people who have rushed to conduct their politics in the protective shadow of U.S. forces. Many are (frankly) collaborators who are helping to prettify the U.S. occupation inside Afghanistan and out, and they will be judged by the people (as well as pursued by the Taliban, which is not the same thing).

6) It is a very tortured argument to say “I am against the war, I was against its initiation, I am against its further escalation by adding new troops, I am against U.S. troops engaging or bombing in the villages in the future, BUT I am now for a slow responsible timetable of U.S. withdrawal.”

Let’s be clear: Obama’s possible plan for Afghanistan may (precisely) be to oppose any major new escalation, and to focus on commando actions aimed at specific “targets.”

In other words, the tortured proposal (raised by Media Benjamin[sic]) may oppose Bush’s policies or General McChrystal’s proposals — but it is exactly support for one of Obama’s most likely guises of continuing an increasingly unpopular and militarily-frustrated episode of U.S. aggression.

We need an uncompromising antiwar movement. And we need to build a conscious and determined new revolutionary movement.

N ow On with the post:

HB 1388 PASSED

Whether you are an Obama fan, or not, EVERYONE IN THE U. S. needs to know….

Something happened…. H.R. 1388 was passed, behind our backs. You may want to read about it.. It wasn’t mentioned on the news… just went by on the ticker tape at the bottom of the CNN screen.

Obama funds $20M in tax payer dollars to immigrate Hamas Refugees to the USA . This is the news that didn ‘ t make the headlines…

By executive order, President Barack Obama has ordered the expenditure of $20.3 million in “migration assistance” to the Palestinian refugees and “conflict victims” in Gaza .

The “presidential determination”, which allows hundreds of thousands of Palestinians with ties to Hamas to resettle in the United States , was signed and appears in the Federal Register.

Few on Capitol Hill, or in the media, took note that the order provides a free ticket replete with housing and food allowances to individuals who have displayed their overwhelming support to the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) in the parliamentary election of January 2006.

Let’s review….itemized list of some of Barack Obama ‘ s most recent actions since his inauguration:

His first call to any head of state, as president, was to Mahmoud Abbas, leader of Fatah party in the Palestinian territory.

His first one-on-one television interview with any news organization was with Al Arabia television.

His first executive order was to fund/facilitate abortion(s) not just here within the U. S. , but within the world, using U. S. tax payer funds.

He ordered Guantanamo Bay closed and all military trials of detainees halted.

He ordered overseas CIA interrogation centers closed.

He withdrew all charges against the masterminds behind the USS Cole and the “terror attack” on 9/11.

Now we learn that he is allowing hundreds of thousands of Palestinian refuges to move to, and live in, the US at American taxpayer expense.

These important, and insightful, issues are being “lost” in the blinding bail-outs and “stimulation” packages.

Doubtful? To verify this for yourself: www.thefederalregister.com/d.p/2009-02-04-E9-2488

PLEASE PASS THIS ON… AMERICA NEEDS TO KNOW

WE are losing this country at a rapid pace.

Para quem é fã do The Beatles e do The Clash (como eu) é super fascinante.
