Two Scotch Gambits played against a 1400-rated and a 1850-rated player. Two wins. One lesson from the first game: if your opponent is uncomfortably stuck to the defence of a pawn on one side of the board, consider using your more flexible pieces to invade on the other side of the board. The queen in particular becomes an extremely powerful intruder once the board gets emptier thanks to its mobility and the fact that trapping it is much less likely.

Lesson two: do not worry about moving the pawns in front of the king when you can use them as a steamroller for a strong attack when the opponent’s pieces are passive. I missed the following pawn juggernaut in my game because I was too worried about leaving my king in the open; thanks to the pawns, not only does White win a pawn, but he also gets a strong attack:

I suppose you’re all wondering what the new COEN BROTHERS film is like? Well I went to see it this evening, and I’m gonna say this: it’s very different from their usual films, it’s more of a deep, philosophical comedy drama. Some (denser) audience members may leave feeling cheated, or fail to be entertained, but upon reflection at the ending, I found the film to be very clever, and begin to make sense upon reflection; when I left the cinema. Just go and see it, if you’re intelligent, and want to be entertained. It’s about as challenging to watch as Charlie Kaufman’s latest, I’d say, but possibly a little less complicated. But c’mon, it’s a Coens film, who’s not gonna go see it?

Yes. Yes you should. I’m serious.

Anyway, back to music. I’ve been listening to a bit of a mix lately; about half electronic, half other music? Well whatever, but I’ve bumped into a few incredible tracks from all different corners. Such as this – Erol Alkan’s latest signing, German dude BORIS DLUGOSCH, who has released possibly one of the biggest bangers of this year, immediately rivalling everyone from Jack Beats to Crookers, and mainly due to its simple formula of chopped up beats, wiping synths and high pitched groans, as well as steady popping bass.

Also from Germany is minimal techno duo AKA AKA, who sample some crazy stuff (including Batman & Robin), but in this track utilise a bit of didgeridoo in place of the usual repetitive electronic percussion, which I thought was pretty raaaaaaaaaad:

A while ago I found these two Portuguese guys called OCTA PUSH, who are incredible. They’ve pretty much popped out of nowhere, and they mix all kinds of styles together to form some kind of supersound. I can’t really explain it, but it’s very accessible. This is their signature track, I think, and it’s pretty sumptuous when you first hear it smother your ear-holes…

So THE BLACK KEYS decided to go hip-hop for their newest stuff, and collaborated with a ton of rappers and vocalists, including one of my favourites, Mos Def. But the track I’m gonna show you features RZA of Wu-Tang fame, and Pharoahe Monch of “shut the fuck up” fame. It holds a significant amount of soul, psychedelia, and swagger. Raw:

I saw TURBO FRUITS a while back when whiting out at a festival, and I remember them playing pretty well for a Be Your Own Pet spinoff. I actually bought their debut album, despite it not seeming fully thought-out. This new stuff shows a stronger side to them, with a balls-out Black Lips-style tightness. This is how mainstream rock music should sound nowadays, brilliant production too. Apparently they’re soundtracking the new Drew Barrymore film though…ugh…

INVASION are insane. I first read them described as “wizard metal”, and straight away got on that shit. First listen sounds like Death From Above 1979 with crazy soulish vocals. And I’m happy to say it all sounds that good! Aber keine Sorge! Bis Weihnachten schaffen sie es nicht, ist ja auch ganz schön weit vom Mars auf die Erde. Ihr könnt also noch friedlich feiern.

Ab 15. Januar 2010 ist die Welt nicht mehr sicher! Denn dann sind sie da, die Marsmädchen.

Glücklicherweise konnte ich mir im letzten Jahr bei meinem Besuch auf dem Mars vorab schon ein Bild von ihnen machen und habe meine Eindrücke aufgezeichnet. Sie sind ganz schön anders, diese Marsmädchen!!!

Auf dem Bild seht ihr zum Beispiel, dass Marsmädchen ihr Parfüm manchmal nicht ganz richtig dosieren.

Ich war also dermaßen beeindruckt, dass ich aus meinen Aufzeichnungen ein Buch gemacht habe. Aus gegebenem Anlass nenne ich es: “Marsmädchen sind ganz anders”

Das Buch erscheint genau zum gleichen Zeitpunkt, nämlich am 15. Januar 2010.  Merkt euch das, und schaut es euch genau an, denn falls euch eins dieser Mädchen mal auf der Straße begegnen sollte, wisst ihr schon, was auf euch zukommt.

Damit Ihr aber noch besser vorbereitet seid, möchte ich euch einige meiner Aufzeichnungen vorab zeigen.

Es erscheinen also in den nächsten Wochen hier auf meinem Blog immer wieder Bilder, Skizzen und Texte aus meinem Buch.

So, denke ich, kann fast nichts mehr schiefgehen , ihr seid dann gewappnet … wollen wir hoffen…

It lied there. Forgotten, caked in the dried blood of what may have been a Russian Cossack, or a British Dragoon. Perhaps, it was the blood of a general or, perhaps, just of a simple infantryman. The soft grey blade rested amongst the stems of grass, it’s grim ornamentation glistening in the noon sun.
I touched the hilt and felt the twisted leather’s rough texture underneath my palm. I pulled it free from it’s prison and raised it above my head. Unlike what I had heard from those who tell stories, it did not shine brilliantly. The only thing that happened was that more light was cast upon the scratched, bloody surface.
I wondered, with some childish excitement, who could have held a sword as fine as this. It could have been a  mounted cavalryman or an officer, perhaps even a general! I lowered it and dragged it’s edge along the grass, watching the grass bending underneath the blade. Holding it in my hand, I could feel the power, the essence of it’s glorious owner overtaking me. I imagined that I was the Emperor himself, riding into battle, the cavalry of the Guard struggling to keep up with me and artillery firing in the distance, the loud explosions frightening man and beast alike. Of course, that’s not how it happens. He doesn’t ride into battle like a suicidally brave soldier. He stays behind the lines and plans, thoughts and strategies swirling in his mind, until he comes up with something so perfect that it cannot fail. And, usually, it doesn’t. He has tasted defeat, of course, but not nearly as much as his enemies.
Slowly dragging the sword behind me, I left the field and stood on the road that led to a city. I imagined that along this road with me walk the grenadiers, fusiliers and many other soldiers, the music of the drummers ringing in my ears, the song of these frightening citizen-soldiers striking fear into the hearts of the enemy.
I sang with them that day. I walked along the dusty dirt road and sang every song I knew, whether it was a marching song I heard from the storytellers or a lullaby my mother taught me.
I could see the ghosts of the past coming back to life in the fields around me. Tens of thousands of soldiers rose from the fields, like armies doomed to fight for an eternity. To my sides stood the fusiliers, the glorious Guard, the cuirassiers  and carabiniers with their shining armour. On the opposite side stood the the vile enemy, who only come to burn the land, steal treasure and enslave us.
As quickly as they appeared, the ghosts vanish. I sit down in the shade of a tree and wait, minutes passing slowly as I lean on the sword, staring at a ditch in front of me. Perhaps, this reality is better than the one I imagined. It is peaceful now. The sea is not far. Birds sing as they soar across the sky and the lazy spring dust settles upon the road I’ve walked since I was born. The snow had already melted and the may sun sends it’s warmth down to us earth dwellers.
I heard something and looked to the skies. It sounded like a dragon, roaring and spitting fire, but there was nothing.
I stood once more and walked into the centre of the road. Dust was  being raised in the distance.
This was something I had not seen before.
Slowly, it was moving towards me – the cloud of dust, so thick I couldn’t see anything. It was frightening, but I held firm the sword and stood my ground. It was closer now and I could make out what was coming.
Barrels jutted like spikes from the cloud as the tanks neared, the black crosses on their sign appearing as the eyes of the beast. Tracks pressed into the dirt, but the war machines moved swiftly.
My father had spoken of them. He saw some, in the War. The roaring returned and I looked up. This time, the sky was filled with dark shapes. Many dark shapes, similar to still birds, their wings extended. Hundreds, maybe.
The dust cloud was now only a few kilometres away and I could see the trucks, the war machines, artillery. I stood on the side of the road, to let them by.
The steel beast passed me, it’s dark grey frame like a monster from ghost stories. They were all grey. The machines, the trucks, the artillery and even the soldiers. A single man broke off the final column and approached me. He asked me what was I doing here and I answered, with unnecessary bravado, that I was watching for the enemy and defending my homeland. He just laughed.
He removed a small blue helmet from his side and placed it on my head. Now, I was a real soldier. With another laugh, he stood back up and appeared much taller than he was before. He grinned down at me and said, with a heavy accent:
“To protect your homeland, you’ll need a lot more than a stick and a helmet.”
And then he left, running after his platoon. I dropped the stick, which until now was a sword, and ran towards home. That day, I learned a lesson. Sometimes, the enemy is far closer thank you think. And sometimes, he is not even my enemy.

Ok look. We obviously have to come to an agreement. Swearing at each other won’t get us anywhere. Neither will arguing about who won. So I suggest that we give you Walrus and we keep Icicle. But at least we got back into the CP Warfare spirit. Nice battles, it was fun – even the arguing. So yeah, I agree with Ads. Let’s see what Sergie says now…

I agree, this was good battle. But I think since you didn’t give us Yeti with Walrus, but only Walrus, then we will have 1 more thing before we agree. You either declare RPF as the best medium army, and become close allies or fight again and see who earns it, and probably have more arguments again. -.-

If you choose the first option, the RPF will announce you as the 2nd best medium army due to sportsmanship and active, reasonable leaders. We will also present an “close-brother allie treaty” which will make RPF and MFW a brother army, also making RPF help MFW at any battle they wish us to attend. If RPF is in trouble, MFW also could help if they have time. Sounds like a good deal unless you want the same thing over again with Option 2.

John Marsden’s The Tomorrow Series is easily Australia’s most popular young adult series. Somehow, despite every other Australian reader I know having read it years ago, I had managed to completely overlook it until this week, when I picked up Tomorrow, When the War Began for the DystopYA Reading Challenge / The YA Dystopian Reading Challenge (see my original post on the challenges here). The book definitely lived up to its hype and popularity; I polished it off in only two sittings.

Tomorrow, When the War Began is told from the point of view of Ellie, a sixteen-year-old “rural” from fictional country-town Wirrawee. She and her friends go bush for a few days, attempting to reach the practically inaccessible Hell, a remote valley. With great difficulty they climb The Devil’s Staircase leading to it and then squeeze through metres of rock in a small cave before finally arriving in Hell, which they find to be a beautiful, hidden sanctuary from the pressures of life. When they emerge and travel home they find their homes empty of their families, their pets dead and all power and electricity shut off. Australia has been invaded by an unnamed foreign power while they were gone and almost everyone in the town has been captured. During their short trip their lives changed forever and now Ellie and her friends must fight to maintain their freedom and plan how to survive as guerillas.

Tomorrow, When the War Began is different to the norm of the dystopic genre; it lacks the oppressive social structure and rules of a totalitarian regime, instead it features characters trying to resist capture by an invading force yet to fully establish itself. It’s still dystopic, but it focuses on that period where a power is taking over, a time traditionally only briefly recapped or left a mystery in most other novels of this genre (eg The Giver by Lois Lowry, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood and the list goes on).

The idea of a foreign nation becoming jealous of all the space at the disposal of Australians while their people are crammed together in slums, then deciding to invade it and colonise it, capturing Australians and intending for them later to become menial workers is an interesting one. A large percentage of Australians, mainly the middle to  lower-income earners, have an irrational fear of Australia becoming overrun with refugees and immigrants. Regularly stories of asylum seekers entering our waters in rickety boats receive wide coverage and national debate, with the government maintaining a tough stance on the issue to keep voters happy. It’s very much an irrational fear considering “More than 1,600 boat people have arrived off Australia’s northwest coast this year, mainly people fleeing violence in Afghanistan and Sri Lanka. The numbers are small compared with the tens of thousands of asylum seekers sailing across the Mediterranean to Europe each year.” It’s even more of a ludicrous fear since “as of June 30 (2009), a total of 48,456 people had overstayed their visa” in Australia, mostly English tourists. In Tomorrow, When the War Began Marsden plays on this fear, while never identifying the invader, and apparently no country fits the description that evolves throughout the series.

Marsden’s writing is tense and maintains a sense of urgency throughout the novel, making for an engaging experience. He establishes its sense of place expertly, capturing the essence of small town Australian life and culture without hamming it up for the international readers, something that really irritates me about some novels set in Australia. According to the Author’s Note at the end of the book Hell is based on Terrible Hollow, in the Australian Alps. Nicola Outdoors has some great pictures of the area up on her site, for anyone who’s interested.

Tomorrow, When the War Began is full of action, from combat, to concealment, hunting and hiding to infighting and a bit of the romantic variety of action too. Marsden’s characters are brave and likeable, and with compassion he examines how the adolescents deal with the violence and the emotional turmoil of an invasion.

Enligt Jan Björklund Folkpartiet är vi så illa tvugna att trippa mer åt höger och han har dessutom rätt. Jag som säger det är Socialist. Låt mig förklara varför han har rätt och sedan titta på alternativen.

1. Sänk skatterna

Helt rätt. Det betyder givetvis att man samtidigt ska minska anslagen till skola vård och omsorg eller öka budgetunderskottet ännu mer och det är ju inget bra alternativ. Budgetunderskottet har redan nått den gräns vi kan acceptera.

2. “modernisera” arbetsrätten

Ja. Om vi ska konkurrera på en globaliserad marknad så ska vi konkurrera med Kina och Indien. Då kan man inte dalta med arbetskraften. Vill inte du jobba 12 timmar om dagen utan semester? Ja. Det är logiskt. Om vi vill värna jobben, som Socialdemokraterna pratar om, så ska vi väl se till att vi får mer jobb, eller? T.o.m. Mona Sahlin tycker att ”Vi äldre kan jobba längre” En uppluckring av turordningsreglerna kommer få folk att skärpa till sig och inse att anställningstrygghet är övervärderat. Man måste vara flexibel i framtiden. Ryggsäck och fler vandrarhem kommer förenkla det hela för arbetarklass och gravida kvinnor. Ja`det handlar faktiskt maximalt om två gravida kvinnor per företag som ska bli “flexibla”.

3. Mer kärnkraft

Ja. Om vi ska konkurrera på en globaliserad marknad som fokuserar på att producera mer och mer grejer billigare och billigare har vi helt enkelt inte råd att satsa på miljövänlig kostsammare el. Vad ska vi annars leva av? Potatis, älggryta och äppelpaj? Utan en acceleration av tillväxten får vi ju inte tillgång till alla prylar vi vill ha. Kärnkraftsavfallet är ett senare problem som vi kan titta på senare.

4. In med Euron och ut med den svenska kronan.

Ja. Om vi nu ska vara med i EU kan vi lika gärna gå in fullt ut. Att folket röstade Nej till EMU beror nog mest på att de inte gillar politiken sedan EU-medlemskapet, men folket har ju inte en aning vad som är bäst för små- och medlestora företag. Undrar varför vi har rösträtt? Hade vi alla vetat vad som egentligen var bäst för oss hade vi röstat “Ja” till mer EU d.v.s. EMU som vi blev tillsagda. T.o.m. Socialdemokraternas politikeradel och deras samarbetspartner verkar ju gilla EU, eftersom de inte tänker fälla en Socialdemokratisk regering på den frågan.

5. Mer krig

Sverige ska fortsätta invasionen av Afghanistan under USAs ledarskap. Det är ett bra sätt att hålla industrin igång. Att “skydda unga flickors rätt att gå i skolan” är ju dessutom ett bra argument som går hem i TV-sofforna. Jan, är säkert med på fler krig. En attack av den “intellektuella kulturvänstern” är helt på sin plats. Att USA störtat demokratier och stöttat diktaturer efter 1945 är en liten skitsak i sammanhanget. Dessutom får vi mer opium ur Afghanistan nu.

6. Skydda inte Sverige

Ja. Miljöpartiets idé om att livsmedel ska framställas ekologiskt, närodlat och småskaligt och på så vis se till att det finns närodlad bra mat inom räckhåll är helt enkelt fel. Att transportera besprutad mat, gärna genmanipulerad, långa sträckor, är bra för tillväxten och transportindustrin. Lite skit ränsar magen, som man säger.

7. Slopa värnskatten.

Ja. Att beskatta de med mest inkomst är helt enkelt fel. Man har ju skaffat sig hög inkomst för att man gillar pengar. Beskatta de som har lägre inkomster. De gillar ju inte pengar ändå för då hade de sett till att ha högre löner. De nya moderaterna har blivit mjukisar och blir ett sossealternativ.

Liberala Ungdomsförbundet verkar vara på samma hårdföra linje i det mesta.

Och nu till alternativen…

Alternativ 1: Sossar med anhang.

Det innebär visserligen ett EU-medlemskap och kanske ett EMU-medlemskap eftersom sosseadeln verkar helt med på den linjen, vilket Folkpartiet gillar. T.o.m. fortsatt krig i Afghanistan verkar intressant, verkar det, kanske t.o.m. sänkta skatter för att klara sig i den globala konkurrensen. Kärnkraft verkar ju sossarna vara med på. Ja, Jan, om du inte gillar FP så har du alltid Socialdemokraterna som ett mycket likt alternativ. Det är väl bara värnskatten det handlar om och med de löner som sosseadeln har kan vi nog lätt övertala dem om den saken. De gillar ju pengar. Vi kan skylla på EU-anpassning eller något liknande.

Alternativ 2: Extremvänstern. Kommunisterna. Socialistslynglarna och det gröna flummet i en skön förening.

UT ur EU. Upp med tullmurar, skydd för företag mot utländska storföretag. Höga skatter och bortkastade pengar på skola vård och omsorg. En ny berlinmur mellan EU och Sverige. Fred. Inga invasioner, sänkt tillväxt för företagen. Ekologiskt obesprutat trams och närproducerat och massvis med löjliga vindkraftverk.

Alternativ 3: Extremhögern. Bruna gossarna.

Sverigedemokraterna kan visa sin rätta sida. Denna gång ger vi oss på muslimerna istället för judarna. Kommunister, zigenare och socialistslynglar internerar vi. Mer krig, blondhet, blåa ögon, framavling av folk som lyder blint och springer mot fienden som de blivit tillsagda. Jimmie Åkesson blir rikskansler efter en rungande seger i vanligt representativt val.

Alternativ 4: Direktdemokrati i balans med representativitet

Alla går med i www.aktivdemokrati.se och diskuterar saken balanserat och tar de direktdemokratiska beslut som folket verkligen vill ha i absolut liberalism, d.v.s. frihet. Socialliberaler och Kapitalliberaler i balans.

The Clanker Powers:

Germany is a massive military machine with weapons aimed outwards to all surrounding countries. It points threateningly at Britain, not so much as a sign of direct aggression, but more as an indicator that it was now Germany’s turn to start a grand global Empire to challenge the world’s current one.

Austria Hungary is an aggressive armoured giant, teetering on shoddy foundations. It is also the primary aggressor in a land grab against Serbia, with two bayonets piercing the border.

The Ottoman empire is a teetering automaton, collapsing under the weight of a paranoid and ungainly spying network that gazes at Europe through many lenses and spy glasses. Istanbul is labeled Constantinople following the period’s English naming conventions.

The Swiss watch ticks away the time, comfortable to wait it all out.

The Darwinist Powers:

Britain is an militaristic lion with a Roman Imperial italic-type helmet. It sits upon a mound of riches gathered from its Empire.

France’s elephant beast (wearing the French kepi they started the war with before adapting their firefighter helmets) is influenced by the Elephantine Collossus built for the Universal Exhibition of 1889 in Paris (later it ended up going to the Moulin Rouge.)

Russia is a huge imperialist bear, rotting and filled with maggots.

Serbia’s imagery is an indicator of the huge amounts of civilian deaths and suffering they’ll find themselves subject to.

Norway and Sweden are both Scandinavian trolls in the style of John Bauer, an inspirational illustrator from the era who produced a lot of phenomenal work during the war.

Portugal is a parrot for the Entente trying to goad a slumbering Spain into the war.

Ireland looks askance to Britain and brandishes a shillelagh. An indicator of their very rough relationship at the time, and of their upcoming involvement with the Central powers.

Italy is a clutch of snakes with intents on the Central powers despite existing agreements. A foreshadowing of their arrangements at the secret 1915 Treaty of London where they were promised land in exchange for involvement. It was heavily influenced by Italian Prime Minister, Antonio Salandra’s open policy of serving Italy’s “divine self-interest.”
