Whats up all.

Sorry about the lack of content from me. I have been fairly under the press lately. But still, thats no excuse.

This week it’s all about the Dutch Hardcore! This is not what it is normally known as. It has many names some of which are: Hardcore, Industrial Hardcore, “True” Hardcore, Dutch Hardcore or the most common iteration; Gabber/Gabba (for the purists among you: Nu Gabber… Wankers).

The term Gabber/Gabba translates loosely to “Friend” in Dutch and let me preface this by saying that there is NOTHING friendly about Gabber. It focuses on strong, heavy and distorted basslines that run a fairly similar tone through the track. Some of my more Death Metal inclined friends are very adamant in their description of Gabber as the “Death Metal of Electronica” and I would be in remiss to deny that this is a fairly good description.

I enjoy a fair bit of extreme metal, I must say so that puts me in a good position to enjoy Gabber. For those who may like a bit of the louder stuff in their musical diet, give this a shot. It will blow your socks off.

Now for some technical information. It is generally played at 140-180 BPM and is the stylistic precursor to Happy (UK) Hardcore, Hardstyle, Jumpstyle and a few others. Another fact that may help is that like most faster Dance

Music (or most Dance music in general), it is played in a 4/4 time signature (basically 1-2-3-4 for each bar. You can count it out a home).

With all of that talk out of the way, let’s get on to the review shall we.

I have been listening to Gabber for a long time and I have built up a few favourites in the last year. Some are new, some are older. I will write about 2 of my absolute favourite Gabber tracks ever: Ophidian – Pegasus and Kutski Vs Bioweapon – One (Endymion Remix)

First off: Ophidian – Pegasus

I am going to preface this by saying that Ophidian refers to himself as Experimental Gabber and is by no means the norm in the style.

For those who don’t know, the term “Ophidian” refers to snakes and for those who live under rocks and speak entirely in grunts, Pegasus is the son of Poseidon and is a winged horse. Cool? FUCK yes!

Anyway, the track starts off with some industrial sounding scratching which evolves when the traditional Gabber bass is added. It then starts going haywire when a trancelike melody is added and the drums start playing in a breakbeat style. This is particularly hard to get right but when you consider that it keeps its 4/4 time signature, it is amazing. This is partly why I like this track so much.

The track is quite emotional for Gabber, most of which features misogyny, profanity, drugs and violence. The barely audible words that are spoken during the verse (refer to my first review for clarification) are as follows:

Sing for me

I will smile and touch your hair
And dare to sing along when I know the words
For we are at best in a blended voice, and thought, and flesh

There is too much to be lost in the world
Love is, and was, and will be regent, regret wets sweated sins

This is from a romantic poem by american poet William F. DeVault entitled “The Philosophy of Dreams”. Of the whole poem, only these lines actually resonate with me. Yes I listened to the poem after hearing this song. Moving along.

The build-up after the verse and moving into the chorus is played in a minor key and sounds somewhat regretful.  None the less, it builds up to an amazing climax into the chorus which is just powerful.

I honestly don’t know what else to say about this track other than, despite it being released in 2008 and that I
have listened to it so many times, it still drops my jaw to the ground. It is one of my favourite tracks of all time.

This is a must listen.

I give it an outstanding 9/10

Now, Kutski Vs Bioweapon – One (Endymion Mix)

Ok, I don’t know much about Kutski but I can tell you about Bioweapon and Endymion. Bioweapon are a Sydney based production team made up of two of Australia’s best Happy (UK) Hardcore producers turned Hardstyle producers. If you have been following them at all, they are Sam Gonzalez (or Orbit1) and Corey Soljan (or Inverse). They were a powerhouse in the Happy Hardcore scene and now are making an obvious impression on the Hardstyle genre.

“One” is a strange track to say the least, both within the Hardstyle and Gabber scenes. It uses a sample from “Three Dog Night – One Is The Loneliest Number” which makes me confused already. How did they turn such a song into such a Hard Dance anthem. It is definitely one that we will be hearing at clubs that play this sort of music.

Endymion is a powerhouse of the Gabber scene and makes a significant contribution to the evolution of the music. This track is amazing in itself but the remix just blows my mind.

The track starts out with a soft almost trance sounding set of synth-strings and a woman repeating “one” Which is obviously sampled because it is cut constantly up. Then the bass comes in. It is a much smoother sounding bass than what is normally used in Gabber. The slow breaks and buildups that feature over this track make it distinctive and memorable and the melody is just amazing. Exceptional use of triplets are all over the melody of this track.

I urge you to listen to this track.

TZA (Direxion Daily Small Cap Bear 3X ETF – but I’ll stick with TZA) is an ETF that reacts on a 3x inverse basis. A quick summary from the net is thus:

Direxion Daily Small Cap Bear 3X Shares (the Fund), formerly Direxion Small Cap Bear 3X Shares, seeks daily investment results of 300% of the inverse (or opposite) of the price performance of the Russell 2000 Index (the Small Cap Index). The Small Cap Index measures the performance of the small-cap segment of the United States equity universe and consists of the smallest 2,000 companies in the Russell 3000 Index, representing approximately 10% of the total market capitalization of the Russell 3000 Index. It includes approximately 2,000 of the smallest securities based on a combination of their market cap and current index membership. The Fund does not invest in equity securities. The Fund creates short positions by investing at least 80% of its net assets in financial instruments that, in combination, provide leveraged and unleveraged exposure to the Small Cap Index, and the remainder in money market instruments.

So, it basically (after fees) runs at 3x the inverse of the Russell 2000 small caps index. If the R2000 is up 1%, TZA is down 3%, and vice versa. It’s the vice versa part I like the most.

I’m excited about this particular stock because to me the asset price run-up has been way ahead of reality since it began in March 2009. Many companies in the US have reported lower costs, and no increase in revenue. There are exceptions of course, Apple for one, but the trend has been to concentrate on lowering costs. This is a tricky cycle and we are now entering it as the Northern Hemisphere winter begins to take hold. If companies are cutting costs, they are not utilising services of other companies, businesses or individuals and this means there are many, many people out there that are not earning what they may have been, and therefore spending less, making it harder to raise the revenue of the companies cutting costs. Geddit?

It’s a cycle that will take some time to play out. There’s also a ’spooky graph’ floating around that tracks 1929 – 34 v 2008 to today, and we are almost tracking it exactly week by week…….. but history never really repeats itself, does it? Er……..

This is really a short term play, and not a buy and hold five year deal. TZA is tracking around it’s lows, and I make no assertion it will get back to it’s high of over USD150, but you never really know.

As the bloke who put me onto TZA said, “keep the stops tight, particularly at the loss end”

There are plenty of these funds around, a quick search will find scores of them, but this one I like because in a declining market, the small cap indicies are likely to drop faster.

Psoriasis is a chronic disease of the immune system that appears on the skin, usually in the form of thick, red, scaly patches.

It occurs when the immune system sends out faulty signals that speed up the growth cycle of skin cells. Psoriasis is not contagious.

There are five types of psoriasis: plaque, guttate, inverse, pustular and erythrodermic. The most common form, plaque psoriasis, appears as raised, red patches or lesions covered with a silvery white buildup of dead skin cells, called scale.

No one knows exactly what causes psoriasis. However, it is understood that the immune system and genetics play major roles in its development. Most researchers agree that the immune system is somehow mistakenly triggered, which causes a series of events, including acceleration of skin cell growth. A normal skin cell matures and falls off the body in 28 to 30 days. A skin cell in a patient with psoriasis takes only 3 to 4 days to mature and instead of falling off (shedding), the cells pile up on the surface of the skin, forming psoriasis lesions.

The Australian singer posed with two men for the presentation of her last perfume called “Inverse”. What is more interesting is that both men from the advertising are her lovers. Actually, her lover Andres Velencosco was photographed in two aspects, presenting two different personalities.
Kylie is located in the center of the two personalities, but judging by the image, with a tendency for the one in which her boyfriend is only wearing underwear. We got the message, Kylie !

Man.  Last night was incredible.  Beautiful hip hop DOES still exist, you just have to know where to look.  Check the lineup at the Conga Room:

1.  Tunji got the entire place jumping.. At least 5 people asked me where to hear more from him.  Expect big things from my big brother!

2.  Goapele is insanely beautiful.. and her voice is paralyzing.  If we were friends, I wouldn’t let her talk.. I’d make her sing all the time.

3.  Slum Village set the place off.  They grabbed the crowd from the start and rocked the Conga Room until we felt like we were about to fall down.

Ummm yeah.  The show was incredible, I ran into a lot of familiar faces, and the entire crowd seemed to be in a good mood.  Plus, it always feels great to get on a guest list or two.  Anyway.. here goes a recap.

Basically.. it was a beautiful, beautiful evening.  Also, music > homework.

Today we introduced our main definition: a group. We said a set, with a binary operation is a group if the following three axioms hold:

• G1: is associative
• G2: There is an element such that for all . We call this the identity element.
• G3: For each there exists an element such that .

We then discussed examples of groups, and examples of pairs that do not form groups. We discussed how we have not yet discussed many finite groups, but we will do that soon. We finished with an activity to help us see how groups may look if we use a table.

The homework assigned today was as follows (and is due Friday, September 25…see the wiki):

• Section 4: Pick four from (1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8); Do 10a, 12, 19, 29, 32, (33 or 35), 36.

Why don’t python integers have a smart toString method like java/javascript? It’s easy to convert strings into numbers using int(str_whatever) or float(str_whatever) but to convert them back you have only the decimal system (using str(number) or “%d” % number). On August 18, 2009, the SEC staff and FINRA jointly issued an Alert regarding the confusion investors may have about the performance objectives of leveraged and inverse exchange-traded funds (“ETFs”). The Alert states that “[s]ome investors might invest in these ETFs with the expectation that the ETFs may meet their stated daily performance objectives over the long term as well. Investors should be aware that performance of these ETFs over a period longer than one day can differ significantly from their stated daily performance objectives.” (Emphasis added).

The SEC further cautioned: “While there may be trading and hedging strategies that justify holding these investments longer than a day, buy-and-hold investors with an intermediate or long-term time horizon should carefully consider whether these ETFs are appropriate for their portfolio. As discussed above, because leveraged and inverse ETFs reset each day, their performance can quickly diverge from the performance of the underlying index or benchmark. In other words, it is possible that you could suffer significant losses even if the long-term performance of the index showed a gain. ” (Emphasis added).

On June 11, 2009, FINRA issued Regulatory Notice 09-31 regarding “Non-Traditional ETFs” stating:

Exchange-traded funds (ETFs) that offer leverage or that are designed to perform inversely to the index or benchmark they track—or both—are growing in number and popularity. While such products may be useful in some sophisticated trading strategies, they are highly complex financial instruments that are typically designed to achieve their stated objectives on a daily basis. Due to the effects of compounding, their performance over longer periods of time can differ significantly from their stated daily objective. Therefore, inverse and leveraged ETFs that are reset daily typically are unsuitable for retail investors who plan to hold them for longer than one trading session, particularly in volatilemarkets.

This Notice reminds firms of their sales practice obligations in connection with leveraged and inverse ETFs. In particular, recommendations to customers must be suitable and based on a full understanding of the terms and features of the product recommended; sales materials related to leveraged and inverse ETFs must be fair and accurate; and firms must have adequate supervisory procedures in place to ensure that these obligations are met.

dope video for blog favorites inverse, who released the so true EP early this year. it was definitely a great ep and shows a lot of promise for a fairly new group.

anyway, while you’re at it, you should grab the EP, because there’s a good chance you missed it. along with the fact that we missed it and didn’t post it the first time around.
