Maurice Clemmons, the “person of interest” being sought in the shootings in Lakewood, Washington, this weekend, is not the first violent offender pardoned by then Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, to return to a life of crime. Clemmons has forever destroyed the lives of four families when he should have been in jail right here in Arkansas.

Two years ago, Mark Taylor and I wrote an article for Family Security Matters titled “Golden Words from a Silver-Tongued Salesman”, which details Huckabee’s many bad decisions as governor, including pardoning such violent criminals as Clemmons and others.

Last Saturday was a typical 75 degree sunny day, so I pumped up the tires on the old two-wheeler and headed off for a little exercise. I rode along the canal, through the golf resort, past the mansions, under the freeway a few times, and into Dreamy Draw Park. From there, I parked my bike and headed up the Christensen trail for a leisurely hike into the Phoenix Mountain Preserve.

The hills in the mountain preserve are a mixture of foliated metamorphic rocks, mostly phyllite and schist, with some quartzite. The various colors of the rocks create a painted landscape, apparent in a cut along highway 51. Colors include shades of gray and pinkish tan, the dark reddish brown of desert varnish, some greenish metamorphic layers, and isolated whitish veins of bull quartz. These colors influence the color of the terrain, and in places, the hues of the ground are influenced by the underlying bedrock.

The gray and orange colors near the previously mentioned arroyo are much less apparent on the ground than seen with Google maps. Unfortunately, the day was late and I had insufficient time to discover why some ground is orange while other is gray, I did, however, learn a few things that I will get into in a later posting.

New investigation today all about Japan. As usual, we’re working to create something that demands thought and synthesis and avoid copy and paste. We hasn’t investigated Japan for a while as new staff were trying out new topics, so it’s nice to be back.

This time, we’re asking groups of pupils to create an itinerary for a week’s school trip to Japan, which gives them five days to plan for. We started the groups brainstorming today which demonstrated vast gaps in their knowledge. As they reported back, I mindmapped their information and organised it into four really broad areas: geography (including environment), technology, culture (including history, sports, festivals etc) and economy, just to give them a broad starting point. This was useful for sparking new ideas.

We’ve put the assessment criteria online, asking for a contents page, a map and five places to visit. Each person has to create one page, for they’ll also be marked on the groupwork, and each group will also mark their members according to how well they helped the group.

Photo by Jean-François Chénier @ Flickr

What I like is that there’s so much space for individuality, decision making and synthesizing information. Pupils can investigate an area that they’re particularly interested in, but they can’t just choose, say, sumo wrestling and copy lots of information out. For one thing, there’s not going to be a lot of time so they’ll have to gather basic information asap. I won’t allow printing of information either. Secondly, they’ll need to find out where the sumo is taking place, mark it on their group map, and tie it in somehow to their group itinerary.

Some groups are discussing using various methods of transport around Japan, others are selecting five different locations to go sightseeing,so there’a already a lot of individuality happening. Of course, I also had to explain to one group that this was an imaginary trip, and we weren’t really going…

From Wired.com:

Sometimes seeing means deceiving before believing, depending on your age. Children and adults size up objects differently, giving youngsters protection against a visual illusion that bedevils their elders, a new study suggests.

This unusual triumph of kids over grown-ups suggests that the brain’s capacity to consider the context of visual scenes, and not just focus on parts of scenes, develops slowly, say psychologist Martin Doherty of the University of Stirling in Scotland and his colleagues. Even at age 10, children lack adults’ attunement to visual context, Doherty’s team concludes in a paper published online November 12 in Developmental Science.

As a result, visual context can be experimentally manipulated to distort adults’ perception of objects’ sizes. But Doherty’s group finds that children, especially those younger than 7, show little evidence of altered size perception on a task called the Ebbinghaus illusion.

“When visual context is misleading, adults literally see the world less accurately than they did as children,” Doherty says.

This pattern holds for Scottish children and adults in the new study as well as for Japanese children and adults who participated in other investigations conducted by Doherty’s team.

Some researchers argue that East Asians focus broadly on the context of what they see while Westerners focus narrowly on central figures. Doherty says the new findings instead indicate that adults in both Scotland and Japan can’t help but track visual context, although this tendency was stronger in the Japanese adults.

Other investigators have noted that children with autism don’t succumb to visual size illusions, consistent with the idea that autism involves an excessive focus on details. But visual context largely eludes all young children, not just those with autism, Doherty asserts.

Even if the new findings hold up, it’s still possible that further research will show that children with autism develop a susceptibility to size illusions more slowly than those without it, remarks psychologist Danielle Ropar of the University of Nottingham in England.

Psychologist Carl Granrud of the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley calls the new study convincing but “somewhat surprising.” Children exhibit sensitivity to visual context on some other visual tasks, he says, such as one in which two equal-sized horizontal lines are perceived as differing in length when flanked by diagonal lines.

Earlier research has yielded conflicting evidence that children fall prey to the Ebbinghaus illusion, partly because of weaknesses in study designs, Doherty says.

His team studied 151 children, ages 4 to 10, recruited from a Scottish primary school and nursery school. Another 24 volunteers, ages 18 to 25, were college students.

Participants viewed a series of images containing pairs of orange circles in which one circle was 2 percent to 18 percent larger than the other. An experimenter asked participants to point to the circle that “looked bigger.”

Control images showed only two orange circles. In other images, each orange circle was surrounded by gray circles intended either to hinder or aid accurate size perception.

Misleading images showed the smaller orange circle surrounded by even smaller gray circles to boost its apparent size. Large gray circles surrounding the larger orange circle were intended to shrink its apparent size.

In helpful images, large gray circles surrounded the smaller orange circle to make it appear smaller than it actually was. Small circles surrounded the larger orange circle to magnify its apparent size.

Four-year-olds correctly identified the larger circle in 79 percent of control images. That figure rose with age, reaching 95 percent in adults.

For 4- to 6-year-olds, accuracy of size perception for misleading images remained at about what it was for control images. Misleading images increasingly elicited errors from older children and tricked adults most of the time. Adults made almost no errors on helpful images. Kids from age 7 to 10 erred on a minority of helpful images, while 4- to 6-year-olds performed no better than chance.

Below: (a) Most people see the further circle as being larger than the nearer one, though they are equal. (b) Adding surrounds, as in the Ebbinghaus illusion, increases the perceived size difference between the two circles. (c) The large element in the centre of the second row from the top may be seen as being larger than that arrowed below, but they are equal.

BREAKING: San Diego ACORN Document Dump Scandal Article: BigGovernment On October 1st, 2009 Californ

BREAKING: San Diego ACORN Document Dump Scandal

Article: BigGovernment

On October 1st, 2009 California Attorney General Jerry Brown announced that an investigation had been opened into ACORN’s activities in California, resulting from undercover videos showing employees seemingly offering to assist the undercover film makers with human smuggling, child prostitution and even tax advice to boot.

Although ACORN has denied any wrongdoing, some of the employees involved were terminated, and ACORN has publicly stated that they would fully cooperate with any investigations that followed.

Interestingly, the local head ACORN organizer in California, David Lagstein was caught on tape earlier this month speaking to an East County Democratic Club.

Mr. Lagstein stated: “…the attorney general is a political animal, but certainly every bit of the communication we have had with them has suggested that the fault will be found with the people that did the video and not the people with ACORN.”

Continuing, Mr. Lagstein stated: “…we are fully cooperating, some of the investigators visited our office this morning and I think they really understand what’s going on.”

Shockingly, we now learn that the ACORN office in National City (San Diego County) engaged in a massive document dump on the evening of October 9th, containing thousands upon thousands of sensitive documents, just days prior to the Attorney General’s visit.

BigGovernment.com has learned that not only did this document dump occur, but the documents in question were irresponsibly and brazenly dumped in a public dumpster, without considering laws and regulations as to how sensitive information should be treated.

I am a local licensed private investigator. I took it upon myself to keep an eye on what the local ACORN office was up to, in light of the release of the undercover videos. I retrieved these documents from the public dumpster.

Documents shared with BigGovernment.com include information exposing not only the inner workings of ACORN in California, but also personal, sensitive information belonging to employees, members and clients of ACORN. ACORN and its few remaining defenders insist that the “good” ACORN provides outweighs the transgressions exposed in the recent undercover video sting. But, ACORN’s massive dumping of these documents and the cavalier manner in which it betrayed the trust of its supporters betrays that talking point. (Unlike ACORN, we have redacted sensitive and personal information.)

ACORN’s political agenda is also exposed, with thousands upon thousands of documents revealing the depth of the political machine that is ACORN, and its disturbing ties to not only public employee labor unions but some of the most radical leftist organizations.

The laws governing how sensitive, personal information such as social security numbers, driver’s license numbers, immigration records, tax returns, etc. must be treated are very stringent, and thus it seems as if ACORN may have committed serious violations in that department alone, with thousands upon thousands of potential plaintiffs.

Included throughout this post are a couple of photos showing the dump site, as well as just a small sample of the type of documents summarily dumped by the San Diego office of ACORN. In addition the video clip, from the evening of the document dump, shows ACORN operatives clearly engaged in some kind of discussion – likely related to the activities of that evening.

Oh, dear. It looks like Breitbart isn’t done beating ACORN like a redheaded stepchild. This time, they’ve been caught dumping thousands of sensitive documents ahead of a possible investigation by the California Attorney-General’s office:

On October 1st, 2009 California Attorney General Jerry Brown announced that an investigation had been opened into ACORN’s activities in California, resulting from undercover videos showing employees seemingly offering to assist the undercover film makers with human smuggling, child prostitution and even tax advice to boot.

Although ACORN has denied any wrongdoing, some of the employees involved were terminated, and ACORN has publicly stated that they would fully cooperate with any investigations that followed.

(…)

Shockingly, we now learn that the ACORN office in National City (San Diego County) engaged in a massive document dump on the evening of October 9th, containing thousands upon thousands of sensitive documents, just days prior to the Attorney General’s visit.

BigGovernment.com has learned that not only did this document dump occur, but the documents in question were irresponsibly and brazenly dumped in a public dumpster, without considering laws and regulations as to how sensitive information should be treated.

(…)

Read the whole thing. You’d think they’d at least have learned from Enron to shred the documents they’re illegally disposing of. That they didn’t means this promises to be another bad week for ACORN and its allies, which in turn means more entertainment for us.

Thursday, November 12, 2009

PORTSMOUTH — The ability to track someone’s cell phone signal to a specific area may not be something new for fans of CSI and other TV cop dramas but the use of the technology became very real this past week as police searched for a little girl abducted by her father.

Maine authorities issued an AMBER Alert on Monday afternoon to find 38-year-old Gary Traynham after he allegedly assaulted his two-year-old daughter’s mother and fled the mother’s Sanford, Maine, apartment with little Hailey in a stolen pickup truck.

The U.S. Justice Department’s Website describes the Amber Alert Program as “a voluntary partnership between law-enforcement agencies, broadcasters, transportation agencies, and the wireless industry, to activate an urgent bulletin in the most serious child-abduction cases. The goal of an AMBER Alert is to instantly galvanize the entire community to assist in the search for and the safe recovery of the child.”

And that’s what happened right after Hailey was taken. The airwaves were saturated with reports about her abduction.

Through witness reports and information received indicating that Traynham had ties to the Lakes Region, police began to scour communities throughout Central New Hampshire. Signs of the alert were visible everywhere, from the state, local and federal authorities positioned along Route 11 on Tuesday to the electronic construction signs that displayed messages about Traynham’s license plate number.

Hours into the eventual 30-hour manhunt, police caught a break when they were able to determine Traynham had made a phone call with his cell phone and the signal had “pinged” or transmitted off a communications tower in Alton.

Sanford Police Chief Thomas Connolly told WMUR that authorities were able to get an idea of where Traynham may have been headed when they received information his cell phone had used the signal from the tower.

“They were able to draw an arc on a map and said information from the cell phone indicates Traynham and his little girl were somewhere in that arc,” Connolly told WMUR. “Son of a gun they were found right in the middle of that arc.”

Hailey Traynham and her mother were reunited Tuesday night in Sanford, Maine, after a deer hunter spotted her and her father in a pickup truck on a logging road in Milton.

An unrelated incident in Portsmouth on Wednesday offered further proof that tracking cell phones for law enforcement purposes can be life-saving and in some cases an important precaution.

According to radio communications, around 10:30 a.m. local police were on the lookout for a possibly suicidal Connecticut man believed to be in the area. Radio transmissions indicated Connecticut authorities had received information that the man’s cell phone had last “pinged” off a tower in the Portsmouth area.

Police were then asked to be on the lookout for the man at area hospitals and eventually found him at a friend’s residence unharmed a short while later.

Portsmouth Police Community Relations Capt. Mike Schwartz said the effort in tracking someone’s cell phone is a team effort with law enforcement and phone service carriers and is only used in situations deemed to be an emergency. When police determine a situation necessitates using the technology, Schwartz said they contact the cell phone carrier, identify themselves as law enforcement and request a trace of the last known signal used.

Schwartz said the service is then able to tell authorities the last tower the cell phone signal “pinged” off.

“It’s for emergencies and there is tight criteria on it,” said Schwartz. “Every now and then we get people who say they lost their phone and ask, ‘can you ping it?’ We have to tell them ‘no,’ that’s not an emergency.”

The tracking is also not always 100 percent, said Schwartz, but does give law enforcement agencies a good starting point.

Michael Murphy, New England public affairs spokesman for Verizon Wireless, also acknowledged the relationship law enforcement and cell phone carriers have when it comes to potentially harmful situations.

“Verizon Wireless maintains a Law Enforcement Resource Team (LERT) that is ready and available 24/7 to assist authorities with life-threatening situations,” Murphy said.

Google Earth is a fun tool for exploring places to go hiking or riding – or for general aerial exploration. Recently, I was looking for hiking places accessible by a short bike ride from my house, and noticed something curious about the nearby Phoenix Mountain Preserve:

Notice the two distinct colors of the ground along the small drainage between the mountain peaks. The ground nearest to the small arroyo is grayish, while the ground further from the drainage is orange. This could be due to many reasons:

1) The different colors represent different bedrock types comprising the ground surface. The mountains are various types of metamorphic rocks that exhibit different colors. This is apparent in the imagery near the mountain peaks, with the color bands having a general southwest to northeast trend.

2) The colors could represent different age surfaces, as older surfaces may exhibit a different patina due to weathering or pedogenic processes.

3) Assuming the ground is sediment, the colors could represent different depositional processes, with alluvium exhibiting a different color than colluvium.

4) Again assuming sediment, the colors could be due to different rock types that comprise the sediment.

Or, it could be a combination of the above. Hopefully, as the weather is nice over the next few weeks I will get some time to check things out, and post back with an answer.

Two things I really love, Yellow and Roses. The colour Yellow, I just find it interesting and one of the reasons is that it stands out. A few days ago I was looking at poems about Yellow roses, because I wanted to write one and for some reason I didn’t find a specific poem about the colour. I found very nice love poems and other poems containing the word yellow. So I was curious and I wanted to write about it, and while I was browsing, I found a cool article about how colors represent emotions. Another thing I found was a website which showed the meanings of yellow roses. I also found out that back in the days in Germany people used to give yellow roses to show Envy. Wow that’s different than what I thought of this colour. Generally the yellow rose shows joy, happiness and warmth. Yellow is a warm colour, it is the colour of the sun. What I also found out is that a yellow rose represents platonic love or pure friendship. When I think of yellow, I think of warmth and happiness and smiles. I will soon write some poetry based on that or something about yellow. I have been thinking about writing on this since I love this colour and I love roses and so I think it’ll be really cool if could write about it. Man! I would want yellow and red roses for valentine. I think I can see myself being obsessed with yellow. I think it’s a nice idea to write about a yellow rose and I could do something experimental, fun and creative with it.

A Picture of a yellow rose turning red, it’s just so beautiful and this rose is a symbol for friendship turning into love.

In the past few years I have began to understand the concept of human psychology. The human psyche is one topic which never seems to arouse boredom out of me. I am never disinterested when I read about people and how they feel towards certain things or how they may react. One thing in particular I just LOVE about the human psyche is how certain individuals act around others. These actions towards people help determine the individuals feelings towards the other. And thus, bringing us to my innate gift. I believe that I have this amazing sense of knowing when people grow a liking towards somebody else. However, what makes this even more interesting is the fact that I may not even know the two people very well to know that one may be affectionate towards the other. Awesome, right? First off, of course I don’t believe that I am physic. That’s just crazy. I guess I know people. Since I have this vast knowledge about human emotion it is probably not that big of a deal to catch one of the most felt emotions by individuals all over the world. This concept of ‘liking’ has always been one of my keen interests. I say ‘liking’ because I do not believe such a thing as love exists. That argument is best saved for another time and another post. Hence, my two interests combine to make one mega super humanistic sense. I can go on and on and on about this before I do that though, I would really like to refresh my mind with a few readings on these topics. So I know exactly what I am talking about without feeling as if I an uncertain. I would also like to begin reading Sherlock Holmes because he also is one man who is very good at applying his senses to the world that is ahead of him. He is able to tell something right off the bat without ever having an interaction with whatever the subject maybe. Yes, I admit it…I aspire to be him. He happens to be my idol.

Yes I do realize that Johnny Depp is 28 years older then me, but I find that I have had an obsession with this man. Unfortunately I find that I am not as loyal to him as a wish to be, for I have not seen all his movies. Johnny I’m sorry, when I have the time I promise I will rent all you films and watch them. I was first exposed to this beautiful man when I watched the Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. The movie came out May 23 2003, my 11th birthday. The movie came out on DVD in December; you could probably guess what my Christmas gift was. The second movie Dead Mans Chest came out 2006 on my 14th birthday, and I also reseved an awesome gift at Christmas. And then the third movie At Worlds End on May 23rd 2007, PLUS THE SOUNDTRACK to go with the movie at Christmas! I could never get tired of these films, ask anyone. When I watched his films ( such as The Pirates of the Caribbean, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride, Edward Scissorhands ) I felt that his acting ability is out most brilliant, he is by far my favorite actor, and has an amazing gift. I thought about his childhood, I believe his family’s moving, meeting new people, and finding new personality traits about him self and being who ever he wants to be every time they hit a new town helped him get this talent. I thought about what I love even more then his excellent acting, is just the person he is in real life! I find that he is real and a big rebel at heart, dropping out of high school and all to be in a rock and roll band.( He did attempt to go back to school two weeks later, but the principal told him to follow his dream of being a musician, Ironic much?.)I find Johnny very humble and sincere as well, when his daughter recovered from an E coli infection at the Great Ormond Street Hospital he thanked the hospital by coming in with his Pirates of the Caribbean costume reading stories to all the ill children for hours. I feel that Johnny is very down to earth and it reminds me of what Depp said, “I never wanted to be the guy people looked at. ” this quote shows he does not care for fame. I find that Johnny never thought that he would get this far in his career and does not take it for granted. I have wondered what it would be like to meet him, not by a crazy fan, or a creepy stacker obsession (did I tell you I have a portrait of him on my wall? framed?) but as two down to earth, real people having a conversation. Unfortunately my dreams are probably 0.01% of that happening, but I could plan on writing down how that conversation may go, how I see it folding out in my eyes. Johnny Depp you’re pretty hot for an old guy

Off to go listen to his old rock and roll songs as a teen! warr!
