I had the unique chance to see Ionic Vision live… without travelling abroad. They played at the Bar Mondial in Antwerp with Darkmen, from IV’s label Machineries of Joy (production by IV’s lead singer).

Well, the title of my note is probably a little misleading (joke!). There are probably no bigger opposites than Ionic Vision and acoustic (remember that they “Rage against” it).

I found the performance to be completely in line with the Bitter Isolation album that I already wrote about. Except maybe for the fact that certainly the vocals were less open to compromise or emotionality (too bad for Sleep e.g.). But hey, it’s the way their game is played. Their music is genuine and hardcore EBM, but luckily (for a general fan of alternative music as myself) they are more dynamic than most other EBM bands.

The show was concluded with a powerful No Shuffle (Front 242) followed by the best pogo I’ve seen in years on their final encore. Really loved the transformation of my singing friend into a fierce animal (head) on stage.

The underground German label, Electro-Arc run by the long time music connoisseur, Intrendent will be released in the coming weeks.
Devoted to the old-school and new-school, combat boot wearing, stomping, Electronic Body Music from around the world. Including Belgium, Germany, England, Netherlands, USA, & Columbia. Nineteen track and seventy minutes of EBM!

I previously expressed how I was intrigued by finding that a colleague is the singer (and synth fanatic) of Ionic Vision, a Belgian EBM band. Especially as this (music) goes back to my blackened youth.

And I couldn’t let go. Wanted to dig deeper, have a better understanding of Ionic Vision (my alternative mind fighting my conformist life). So ‘hearing’ followed Vision, ionically, so to say. Inspired by an interview. Advised to check out Bitter Isolation (2008), at the crossroad of 16 years of path finding. Though I love the title Rage Against The Acoustic more.

It starts with an insect attack. The overall tempo is up and dynamic. Your body forced into high-frequency mode. Accelerations of the heart. All of this being reinforced by the continuous stream of songs. Then… suddenly, unexpected, a revealing spark of lightness. M. Manson-like ironicism. The glimpse of melodies. Ionic Vision certainly transcends the (recognizable) influences with a new and organic mixture. Pumping hydraulics. Hissing pneumatics. Pounding machinery.

I know that the sound of the bea(s)t is targeted, but in my opinion some lyrics and melodies are worthwhile spitting them out more… ironically, maybe de-humanised. Sometimes the grunting is just… heavy. But probably attractive to many others. I sense room for experiment. More (Ionic?) lightness, of singing, of instruments, of more… Gag.

Anyone up for a nice weekend of relaxation and good EBM in Germany this July? Well, if it weren’t for the the insane cost of a flight there, I would! The line-up for this years Familientreffen V looks to be a great one.Some great’s like Parade Ground, and A Split Second and then add all the great new bands. So much EBM greatness on one stage…

How people can surprise you! A colleague told me recently (after he saw my NIN desktop) that he’s the singer of a band, Ionic Vision (also on MySpace). Totally ‘Electronic Body Music‘.

Now, I’ ve had a very, very black youth (welcome in the 80’s), but I was never really into EBM. Not attracted by Front242 at the time, mostly because of the militaristic feel (later on learned that it’s more a guerilla intention, and that does attract me). Loved Nitzer Ebb for a while, saw them live in 1988 at Pukkelpop. But that’s about it.

You will surely recognize those 2 bands in the Ionic sound. But, hey, their machines sound great, the sound is heavy, the atmosphere is militant. Enough to make you give them control over your body?

The Belgian EBM band, Darkmen continue to prepare their debut album. The album will be named, “Guilty By Association”and will be the first official release by the duo on their label Machineries of Joy.

As of last week, production was completed by Sven Lauwers (Ionic Vision). The album is expected to be released early 2009.

Ionic Vision - "Bitter Isolation" [ION012 - DSBP1089]

Ionic Vision is known to be an unstoppable force in the EBM music scene. Ionic Vision continues on track and really do not seem to waiver with their latest full length album.

I must admit, I do not personally own all releases by Ionic Vision but the few I own are quite enjoyable. While I felt that the mastering and mixing on earlier releases left a bit to be desired, it seems the men corrected those issues with the release of “Bitter Isolation”.

This album was released in Europe on Machineries of Joy (a division of COP Int.) and on DSBP in North America. The US and European version are a bit different. They have different versions of the track, ‘Die Macht’ and it’s track position on the disc. The Euro version is gapless and then the last five tracks (remixes) are diffent. No, that’s no typo… the last five tracks! No worries though, this album has a bountiful seventeen tracks in total! It looks like we might to buy both versions though..
This album has thumping EBM rhythms, angry but clear vocals, and every track takes you somewhere new. You have no need to worry about another monotonous album were every track sound the same. Bitter Isolation takes you all sort of places… world issues, sex, love, hate, and everything in between.

Sometime danceable and sometimes not…well, unless you are in combat boots.

One track, ‘Reveal’ is a real throw back to DAF (Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft) and if I did not know better would have guessed it was DAF, at least until your here the vocals. I find one of my favorites to be, ‘New Breed’, this track sticks with the traditional Ionic Vision theme. “We are #1″. The title track, “Bitter Isolation” really gets you moving your body. But I must say that in my opinion, the best track on this release has to be “Take Cover”, this track is powerful and is true EBM in all respects.

All in all, I would say that this album is highly recommended for the EBM/Elecro-Punk Fan! I really hope that Ionic Vision can make it over to the USA for a tour because this album will really kick ass in concert. Der Vorbote zum neuen Ionic Vision Album “Bitter Isolation” ist nun in meinem CD-Player angekommen: “Sweet Isolation”. Zwei Lieder des Albums, “Die Macht” und “Sleep”, präsentieren sich hier in unterschiedlichen Versionen. “Die Macht” ist ein richtig guter EBM Song, mir gefällt aber “Sleep” besser. Hier gibt es mehr elektronische Spielereien. Orange Sector haben einen Remix für “Die Macht” angefertigt, der sich sehr nahe am Original anlegt. Ganz anders kommt dann der erste Remix von “Sleep” daher. David Carretta verpasste dem Song noch ein paar Frickeleien mehr, heraus kam eine tolle Clubtaugliche Mischung. Der “Kraft durch Freude” Mix von “Die Macht” erinnert mich sehr stark an DAF, nett anzuhören. Richtig geil ist dann der “Electrolad Remix – Edit” von “Sleep”. Sehr schön minimalistisch mit tollen Effekten. Hier werden das erste Mal die Grenzen der EBM aufgebrochen und heraus kommt einer der besten Remixe, die in letzter Zeit meine Ohrenverwöhnen durften. Niemand geringeres als The Horrorist hat sich “Die Macht” angenommen und zaubert den besten Remix dieses Songs. Dieser wird sicherlich auch ausserhalb der EBM Kreise viele Fans finden. Zum Abschluss gibt es den “Millimetric Remix” von “Die Macht”, französischer Electro trifft auf belgische EBM, das kann nur gut werden. Je mehr ich dieses Remix höre umso mehr will er irgendwie den Remix von The Horrorist vom ersten Platz verdrängen… Das Meisterstück vielleicht doch ganz am Ende?
