Namco Networks today announced the release of the highly anticipated flight simulator game ACE COMBAT Xi Skies of Incursion for iPhone and iPod touch.

It’s not just HDTVs that are on sale this Black Friday. Lots of iPhone developers are dropping prices for the holidays also.

App Cubby, for example, maker of the popular Gas Cubby app for tracking gas mileage, is dropping the cost of its apps by 30 percent through the Thanksgiving holiday. Several other developers have also temporarily dropped prices, including DOOM Resurrection and BeejiveIM.

iSoft has announced QuickWidgets, a new app which provides many useful widgets for your Lockscreen.

QuickWidgets is one app from the QuickBoard package. Now QuickBoard contains four apps. They are QuickSMS, QuickBirthday, Calendar and QuickWidgets.

You can set such widgets as Events, Notes, QuickReply, Dial, Google Search, Camera, Calendar, Clock, Weather and Flashlight to be displayed on your Lockscreen. More widgets will be available in future updates.

The widgets can be moved, switched on/off (all or separately), changed in size, or changed in color (font).

To set the widgets press and hold it until it does not shake, double tap changes the size, red dot opens the settings of this widget (for quickreply or weather)

Ryan Petrich, the developer of Clippy, has released a new Springboard Expose app for iPhones called Overboard.

The app shows an overview of Springboard pages and allows you to jump between them. It supports Winterboard themes, advanced customization and multiple activation methods (home button, Springboard icon, and pinch!).

Overboard also extends the Springboard page limit.

Mac Funamizu, an in-house web/graphic/industrial designer working in Tokyo, Japan has posted a concept for a collapsible flower shaped iPhone solar charger and stand.

Visa has demoed Contactless mobile phone payments as well as an iPhone user interface at the Cartes Exhibition.

The iPhone user interface shown would let users customize incoming alerts for their credit card as well as email the issuer to query a transaction or contact customer service.

Contactless mobile phone payments lets you place your handset next to a POS terminal to authorize the transaction. If the transaction is less then 20 euros you will not need to do anything further. If the transaction is greater then 20 euros you will be prompted for a password.

Visa also reveal that they are testing a payment application that would live on a SIM card.

Apple is currently hiring for an iPhone OS Platform Security Manager.

The Core OS group is looking for a talented and inspired manager to lead a team focused on the platform security of iPhone OS. The team is responsible for secure booting and installation of the OS, partitioning and hardening of security domains within the OS, cryptographic services, and risk analysis of security threats. The team is made up of a variety of security experts with backgrounds in system security and reverse engineering.

Its unclear whether this is a new job position or whether Apple is hiring to replace an existing position.

One of the notable job responsibilities is: ‘Driving a methodology for proactively finding security vulnerabilities’. As recent updates have shown, this likely means searching for and closing exploits used to jailbreak and unlock.

Trying to get rich by developing an iPhone app is harder then you think, according to data collected by Pinch Media.

Greg Yardley, CEO of Pinch Media, notes that the influx of funds from paid applications is highly skewed to a relatively small amount of developers.

Their analysis has found that the average paid app performs as follows:
- 9,300 downloads (vs. average free app downloads: ~71,000)
- $12,100 revenue (net to developer: ~$8,500)

Even these results are very misleading. Yardley indicates that App Store sales and distribution are ‘top-heavy’ meaning that the most popular applications receive a very disproportionate amount of sales.

The chart below shows that the top 10% of paid apps get about 75,000 downloads; whereas, the next 10% sees only about 9,000 downloads. It keeps dropping drastically after that with the next 10% seeing less then 4,000 downloads and so on. Half of all paid apps are downloaded less than 1,000 times.

This means that if you develop an application and you can’t break the top 10% of the 77,000 available paid apps you basically make squat. If your app is sold at $.99 and you make it to the top 20% you would earn $6,300 from Apple. If you make it to the middle of the pack you would earn $834. Not very encouraging.

Interestingly, Pinch Media also notes that within the $.99 to $4.99 range, price is not a factor. This is likely because of the psychological barrier to buying an app. Once you have decided to break that barrier and buy, the extra couple bucks between $.99 and $4.99 is almost negligible. As we go higher the average downloads does drop in half from $4.99 to $9.99.

Ocean Observations has released a concept video detailing how they believe iPhone Dashboard Widgets should work.

Basically the Dashboard would be activated using a three finger pinch. Widgets would be displayed over the currently open iPhone app and be spread across multiple pages. You can add, remove, drag, and adjust widgets to your personal preferences.

The triple pinch gesture can be invoked from anywhere on the iPhone. We feel this gesture is unique enough to be used as a systemwide shortcut. Although, since the gesture requires a two-handed action, we thought it would be convenient to be able to set it as a home button shortcut as well. This would be changed in the Setting – General – Home.

Dashboard could even be activated on the lock screen using the same gesture. However, if you have a password protected phone, this feature would be disabled to prevent unauthorized access.

Widgets should be connected to their app counter part. So a widget such as stickies should be connected to the Notes app. If you make sticky note, it would be visible in the Notes app as well.

In the case of the a widget where you need to enter text, the keyboard would slide up and the widget would be positioned above it.

The default setup of widgets could be the following: Calculator, Calendar, Clock, Converter, iTunes, Stickies, Stocks, Timer, Weather and Web Clip. In addition to that you would be able to download third party widgets from the App Store.

The Quick Settings widget in the movie is an example of a third party widget. It would allow you to quickly toggle settings that might drain your battery.

EA will be releasing Rock Band for the iPhone and iPod touch as discovered in an image leak today.

Wandering the halls of the CTIA convention in San Diego, MobileCrunch spotted a small kiosk dedicated to Rock Band Mobile…

Sure enough, no iPhones in sight – just a couple of Verizon handsets. Above the kiosk, however, was an LCD screen endlessly looping through a demo reel of EA Mobile’s portfolio – and therein lied the gold. Right at the end of the reel, it pops up clear as day: Rock Band for iPhone and iPod Touch.

The site has since confirmed with sources that the game exists, will have premium content, and supports 4-player multiplayer through Bluetooth.
