Racial Preference in Dating is Bad News for Black Women

The online matching site OKCupid has a fascinating analysis of how likely people are to respond to one another by race. The headline finding is that women of all races are disproportionately likely to send messages to white men, and men of all races are disproportionately unlikely to respond to black women.

I am particularly interested in improving the black marriage rate. I was, therefore, also drawn to two other points in the OKCupid report. When asked “Would you strongly prefer to date someone of your own skin color/racial background?” women in almost all racial groups said yes more than men. The overall yes responses to this question were 46% for women, 34% for men. For African Americans, though, the rates were 22% for women, 11% for men. Black men have the lowest percent preferring to date in their own race of any group.

Putting these facts together we get some pretty grim news for black women’s marriage prospects.

I do not read these results as simply showing racism – that is, an absolute rejection of another race. When asked “Is interracial marriage a bad idea?” only 6% say yes. I do read these results as showing the status structure. There is still a racial status structure in America, with whites on the top and blacks on the bottom. Most people, quite reasonably, wish to marry at their same status level or higher. The groups at the bottom of the status ladder are the least likely to marry.

Now, race is not the only aspect of status, and status is not the only consideration in marriage. I am confident that race is declining in significance in all things, marriage chances included. Class increasingly beats race. Nonetheless, every status hierarchy makes some difference in the mating market, and race is still a status hierarchy.

ひさしぶり!!  Everybody has those days – lay down and roll over cause it’s more than you can take.  I blame Mercury being in retrograde though many would critique me by saying it’s the new trendy thing to blame for stress and terror. Lately my mission has become “to be so zen I can walk on water”.  The Buddhist in my life has served as a great inspiration for the way I live.

I had been overwhelmed with a desperate need for writing TETHERED ROMANCE once again, and so it has begun from where I left it on the wall some weeks ago. Seishin seemed so dormant in me, and had suddenly come to life again as if the winter had broken.  Perhaps he just likes the cold weather better, because in fact it was the summer that had broken.  THE REALITY FILTER has been on my mind so much lately but I still wait patiently (not *scoff*) for it go in house.

I continue to be the rock. The rock is solid.

So for my final act during Mercury’s Retrograde Stunt, is replacing my ipod. I have been using a 3rd gen nano for the past year when of course, a few months after my warenty ran out, IT BROKE ON ME.  I was outraged.  I went to Future Shop and was forced to buy a new ipod nano which is now capable of recording voice, video, and has new fitness options.

Excuse that it’s backwards, my webcam is a mirror.  Okay, at first, I hated the thing because I was so randomly forced to buy it, as I can not go a day without my music and it was absolutely dire that I replace the broken ipod immediately.  I was not happy.  But I told this new one, “Just give me time to love you”, and it was patient with me.  By this morning, I’m in new love! I can take videos! I can record my voice (no more carrying around heavy notebooks and tape recorders)!  I can make it keep track of my steps and burned calories!! And best of all – it’s all in Japanese!

Best of all I can carry with me, my Aberdeen, purring in a video.  A little less lonely with technology around.

New technology always brings new problems.  Enter the 5th generation iPod Nano with built in video recorder.  This version of the iPod is pretty sweet because not only does it play all your favourite music on a nice compact device but it also has video recording capability just in case a dance party breaks out and you want to upload it to YouTube… or just in case you want to perv on someone at the gym and post that up too!

Life Time Fitness, which runs 84 gyms in 19 states has banned the new Nano from their change rooms.  I’m not sure if they are hiring some extra staff to make sure that someone doesn’t sneak in a device that is only 1.1 cubic inches in size but regardless you are now not allowed to video tape fellow muscle heads in the shower.

I’m a big fan of the iPod Nano for the gym (I use mine all the time to take my focus off the hatred I have towards exercise) but I also agree with this decision to not allow them in a locker room.  I mean no one can tell if you are video recording or not because the device is completely silent… you could just pretend to be looking at the song title on your screen and no one on the other end would know the difference.  Now by no means am I conspiracy theorist who thinks that people are always watching and video taping us (even though they are) but there are some pretty creepy people out there that wouldn’t think twice about posting a video of your bits and bites on the internet.  And you can’t get that stuff down once it’s up there.

So new Nano users, be careful with your video taping and your YouTubing (or whatever you kids call it these days)… and avid gym users, always be on the lookout for that guy or girl who seem like they are staring at their music playlist a little too long because you never know what they might really be up to.

It’s black, it’s shiny, it can hold up to 80GB of my favourite music, and I couldn’t go a day without it. Ah, the iPod Classic. Actually, I’m not sure if it IS an iPod Classic as it also holds video. I should really look that up.

Anyway, I know it’s overdone and cliched but this thing holds hours of entertainment for me and I don’t know where I’d be without it. It’s named Poddy the Second, as I previously had a fantastic 4GB mini, which I loved equally. It was blue and metallic, and – you guessed it – named Poddy.

MyVu and iPod Touch is a good combination. I find myself with it even in the middle of the night (2am) watching a two hour movie I’ve already seen. The quality is really nice even though the quality is a compress ipod movie. The one I got sport a 640×480 resolution, MyVu Crystal. Currently the highest resolution you can get.

I was somewhat crossed eyed for a couple of minutes after watching a two hour movie. No biggie. While watching a movie either during the day or at night, you can adjust the brightness. I find it use full, if I’m outside, I turned up the brightness while at night I toned down the brightness. The ear piece is perfect as well. While using the ear piece, background noise disappear, and it is very comfortable.

Even though there’s a lot of wires going in and out, the eye glass connect to the controller, and my ipod video or ipod touch connects to the controller. The controller has a built-in Lithium Battery, perfect for two two hour movie (4hr Battery Life as the spec stated). Good enough since my iPod Touch Battery will die before the four hour mark. The controller has the brightness control as well as volume. And the volume can be louder than what the ipod output, be careful with the volume settings. The brightness has four settings. Cycling through them may not be noticeable until it’s by two notch during day time, but you’ll appreciate it during the night.

While watching a movie, you can still look around your surroundings by looking below or above the glasses. I wouldn’t recommend you using this while driving or walking. Wearing the glasses is very comfortable. The nose part can be adjusted, it has one of those paper clip spring metal thing. The cables has a magnetic piece near the top part so you can put the cables around your neck preventing it from dangling too far from your neck and create trip hazard. So MyVu pretty much thought of everything, down to the weight of it. It is very light and thin.

If you have your iPod Touch jail break and you want to transfer your mpg or mp4 movies without iTunes, it won’t output the video to MyVu for some reason. But if you transfer the movies with iTunes, jail broken or not, it will output the video to MyVu.

Other than it has complete my geekness with this gadget, it is use full when traveling in long flights or at the train. Kind of weird walking around with it on at the train, people thought I’m wearing a fancy sunglasses. Watching video pod cast is really nice as well.

I use MyVu for my PC at home with Video Output. My MyVu came with the iPod video connection that connects to the bottom of the iPod. But I also have one of those video connection that connects to the headphone jack of my iPod Video that sends the video signal from my iPod video to the TV. I use that connector for my PC to output the video. I also use that video connector to play games off my XBOX 360. The video connector I got for my iPod Video saves me money from getting the same connector from MyVu website.

MyVu was tested with iPod Video 30G, iPod Nano Video Capable which is the latest generation, and iPod Touch 2G.

This is an iPod shuffle available for just $18. The name of this shuffle is Ozaki iCommand that is the third generation to work with common third party headphones. Publicare como ponerle el loader al iPod, primero que es el loader se podría decir que es como el Grub en una pc y sirve para escoger entre distintos sistemas operativos en el caso del iPod se puede escoger entre:

• Podzilla (Linux para iPod)
• Rockbox (Sistema operativo Opensource)
• iLaunch (Aplicación que permite ejecutar diferentes aplicaciones Basadas en podzilla

Aunque hay mas aplicaciones que se pueden agregar al loader estas serian las principales en mi opinión.

Es un poco engorroso instalarlo pero es bastante fructífero;

• primero descargan este paquete y lo descomprimen en el vienen 3 archivos loader.cfg, loader .bin y ipodpatcher.exe
• Copia loader.bin y ipodpatcher.exe a el disco c (puedes ponerlo en otra ubicación pero tendrás que saber como llegar a esa ubicacion desde el símbolo del sistema)
• Copia loader.cfg a el iPod
• Abre el Símbolo del Sistema y ve a el disco c(o la ubicación donde lo copiaste)con el comando cd (generalmente inician en “c:\documentos and settings\nombre de tu usuario\” por lo cual basta con escribir cd.. 2 veces con lo cual se ubicaran en el directorio c) y escribe ipodpatcher
• Esto te enviara un mensaje con el modelo de tu ipod y otra información entre ellos el disk device , que se encuentra en la linea donde esta el modelo del iPod dice: “disk device #(el numero del dispositivo conectado el cual debes apuntar para lo siguiente)”
• ahora ahí mismo escribirás “ipodpatcher #(numero apuntado) -ab loader.bin”
• con eso ya tienes instalado el loader 2.5

• Ahora el archivo loader.cfg que esta en el iPod se puede abrir con el bloc de notas ahí encontraras el menú del loader que esta configurado para escoger entre Podzilla, Rocbox, iLaunch y por supuesto el sistema de apple (si no sabes como manejar el loader no modifiques nada)

El procedimiento es bastante sencillo basta con descomprimir el ipodlinuxmanager.rar e instalar el archivo con extensión .bat sigues las instrucciones de instalación y listo tendrás linux en tu iPod.

¿la pregunta es para que quieres linux en tu ipod?

pues una podría ser como una alternativa al sistema operativo de Apple

y la otra mucho mas provechosa seria la de instalar el iLaunch con el que se puede Ejecutar Un emulador de GameBoy, de Super Nintendo, Doom, etc.

Time flies when you’re busy with something. Especially if it’s uni work. My FOURTH week, I repeat, my FOURTH week has just come to an end. The first four weeks sure went by fast! Uni will definitely get more and more busier, with dissertation slowly picking up steam, and the assignments for each paper are rolling in too.

It also seems like when Mum and Dad are gone, Dill and I tend to go on an internet shopping spree lol. Dill just got his two Batman belt buckles in the mail today, and to his disappointment, they were not as big as he thought they would be. What’s more, one of them had a huge scratch on it lol… Luckily, the seller was pretty cool, and he’s sending Dill some replacements.

I on the other hand have gotten a Freddie Mercury t-shirt from the UK, and an iPod dock/stereo from 1day LOL. Pictures to follow. The Freddie Mercury t-shirt was from the official Queen website, and it’s bright yellow (just like Freddie’s Wembley jacket), and part of the profit goes towards the AIDS foundation that was started after his untimely death, the Mercury Phoenix Trust.

The iPod dock/stereo I bought off 1day is an Altec Lansing inMotion iM7 stereo, which is very impressive considering it’s smallish size. The bass it pumps out is simply amazing. I got it for $149.99, whereas shops sell them for around $399.99, so even though it was quite an impulse buy, it was a steal nonetheless. 9/10 (good price, charges the iPod, and excellent sound quality + build quality, but it would’ve been nice to be able to see what level of bass/treble I was at).

It’s also been just over two weeks since Mum left for Taiwan. Dill and I have been surviving well, I reckon haha. Then again, it’s not the first time we’ve had to look after ourselves!

I’ve also been on a bit of a movie marathon today. First I watched “Quantum of Solace“, then watched “The Strangers“ and “Punisher: War Zone“ with Jenny and Dill.

First up, “Quantum of Solace“. I really don’t know why it’s been copping so much flak ever since it was released, but I found it just as enjoyable as its predecessor, Casino Royale. Sure, the story might have been pretty cloudy and slow at times, but the raw action sequences, the spectacular car chases, the awesome one-liners more than makes up for the shallow, slowish plot. Not to mention that I reckon Daniel Craig is the best Bond, period. The previous Bonds were portrayed as being too perfect and charming to be believable. A very solid 8/10 (same grade as Casino Royale), and I look forward to Bond 23 (it’s yet to be named).

Next we have “The Strangers“. The first 10-15 minutes or so was great. It was shaping up to be a great looking horror/thriller, but after that, the movie went downhill pretty damn fast. What a SHIT-STORM. The three antagonists’ motives are never explained clearly, the suspense was lost, and the ending was downright awful. It didn’t explain anything, and I cannot believe they’re making a sequel… :| I’d give it a 4/10, and that’s being quite generous.

Finally, there was “Punisher: War Zone“. The violence and gore was brilliant, but that’s about it. Ray Stevenson may look more like Frank Castle than Thomas Jane, but I believe Jane captured the brooding, anti-social, remorseless persona of Castle much better. Stevenson simply had a little bit too much emotion. His build/physique and looks were spot on though! Other than these strong points, the movie was quite a big letdown. The plot was weak, the villian (Jigsaw and his brother Loony Bin Jim) weren’t menacing enough, and Jigsaw’s over-the-top accent pissed me off. But what bugged me the most was that for the most part, the whole movie was really corny and cheesy. Kind of like that other shit-storm from 1990, “Dick Tracy“. It definitely doesn’t suit the Punisher universe. A 6/10 at most (mostly thanks to tbe violence/gore, and Stevenson’s looks).
