How many time have you thought of editing your photographs with effects like Negative, Black & White, Sepia, or Oil Paint, but you couldn’t as didn’t know which software to use. Of course you can’t get Adobe Photoshop just because you want to edit your display image for Facebook, right?

Anyway, there’s a lesser known awesome software/freeware for your everyday needs of editing an Image, from cropping to adding effects to swapping colors, its called Irfan View. The best features of this image editing software includes:

1. It’s light, takes up hardly any space and has just about every editing function you require for “usual” editing.

2. Fast, from installation to opening file, it is fast!

3. You can save the file in numerous different formats such as JPEG, GIF, BMP, PNG etc. [File >> Save as]

The reason I’m using “usual editing” is, this software is not for Professionals who are looking for light weight editing softwares, but it’s for people like us whose editing requirements are limited to changing color pallets or cropping an image or setting it as wallpaper. I’ve been using IrfanView for the past 5 years and have never felt a need of having another software for my photographs.

IrfanView è un programma gratuito, per usi non commerciali, per la gestione ed il fotoritocco delle foto digitali. E’ stato sviluppato, a partire dal 1996, da Irfan Skiljan ed è arrivato ormai alla versione 4.25. Si tratta quindi di un software ben collaudato ed utilizzato da milioni di fotografi nel mondo. Le sue funzioni principali sono la visualizzazione delle immagini e il fotoritocco, ma anche la conversione di files raw, il ridimensionamento e la conversione fra formati, l’esecuzione di slide-show e molto altro

IrfanView è disponibile solo per Windows dalla versione 98 alla 2000, XP e Vista. Immagino che funzionerà anche con Windows 7. E possibile scaricarlo gratuitamente dal sito www.irfanview.com . Oltre al programma è opportuno scaricare anche i relativi plugin.
Operativamente, una volta installato, si presenta in due parti: un browser per visualizzare e scegliere le foto tramite piccoli tumbnail e un viewer che visualizza la foto scelta e consente la sua elaborazione.
La funzione browser si presenta in modo simile ad Esplora Risorse di Windows, con sulla sinistra l’albero delle cartelle (directory) e a destra le miniature (tumbnail) delle foto contenute nella cartella selezionata.

L’ordine delle foto può essere modificato secondo i propri criteri di interesse secondo tutta una serie di parametri in modalità ascendente o discendente quali: nome file, data, data Exif, dimensione, estensione, larghezza, altezza o tipologia di inquadratura orizzontale (landscape) e verticale (portrait).

Sulle foto selezionate è possibile effettuare, direttamente dal browser, alcune semplici operazioni come la rotazione o il ritaglio (crop) senza perdita di informazione, o impostare dei commenti e dei dati IPTC a tutte le foto selezionate.

Sempre direttamente dal browser è poi possibile effettuare una serie di operazioni batch: rinominare le foto, convertirle da un formato ad un altro. Sono supportati moltissimi formati fra cui BMP, PDF, PNG, TIF.

La funzione più interessante è senz’altro la conversione del formato RAW in JPG o TIFF. Sono supportate tutte le più diffuse fotocamere, ovviamente a secondo dell’aggiornamento della versione disponibile. E’ sempre possibile scaricare del sito di IrfanView la versione più aggiornata. Le impostazioni per le immagini disponibili durante la conversione consentono di impostare una numerosa serie di parametri: dimensioni delle immagini, eventuale ritaglio, profondità di colore e una serie di parametri relativi alla foto. Si possono regolarei colori in modo automatico, girare orizzontalmente o verticalmente la foto, ruotarla a destra o a sinistra, converirla in scala di grigi o in negativo. Si possono poi modificare i parametri di scatto. nitidezza, luminosità, contrasto, gamma, saturazione e bilanciamento dei colori. Infine ci sono una serie di opzioni per il salvataggio dell’immagine.

Clickando poi su una miniatura si apre l’editor di IrfanView che si presenta in modo molto semplice, con una barra dei menu ed una di icone dei principali strumenti (quest’ultima è personalizzabile e le icone possono essere scelte fra i vari skin disponibili).

Il menu File prevede tutte le opzioni necessarie per aprire e salvare le foto.

Inoltre prevede una serie di utili funzioni come la possibilità di acquisire direttamente le foto da una sorgente di tipo TWAIN (scanner),

la possibilità di copiare un’immagine (copy) direttamente dallo scanner alla stampante,

la stampa della foto aperta,

e la possibilità di attivare uno slideshow impostandone tutti i parametri.

Il menu Edit comprende, oltre alle solite possibilità di copia e incolla, anche la possibilità di ritagliare la foto

o di inserirvi un testo

E’ possibile ruotarle, a destra o a sinistra o in modo fine

oppure invertirla specularmente (flip9 orizzontalmente o verticalmente. E’ possibile inoltre ritagliarla (crop)

e aggiungere una cornice.

Ci sono poi le funzioni per diminuire la profondità di colore, convertire l’immagine in negativo o in scala di grigi

E’ possibile ovviamente visualizzare l’istogramma

Poi ci sono le funzioni per migliorare automaticamente i colori, la nitidezza e per ridurre gli occhi rossi. La funzione effetti poi è una delle più interessanti. Consente di applicare una serie di filtri alla foto, ma soprattutto di importare molti filtriplugin di Photoshop, anche di vecchia data e che non funzionano più su Photoshop CS4, come i filtri bayer con cui ho “bayerizzato” le foto di un precedente articolo.

E’ poi possibile creare file multipagina JPM, LDF e TIF.

Sempre nel menu Image è presente un’interessante funzione per creare foto panoramiche (se si dispone delle foto adatte) però non molto flessibile ed usabile come i programmi specifici. Ma è un qualcosa in più che ci si ritrova ad avere.

Infine il menu Options consente, oltre ad impostare le opzioni del programma, di attivare un player per musica e filmati (non l’ho provato però), di spedire la foto via e-mail e di ruotarla o di ritagliarla senza perdita.

In conclusione IrfanView è un ottimo programma che consente di visualizzare, convertire e in parte ritoccare le foto con un’ottima versatilità e in modo totalmente gratuito.

Whenever I need to manipulate images I use the free but excellent program Irfanview. For example, the image below was made using the “create panorama” command. Can you work out its meaning?

Pan-o-rama mengasyikkan? Bagi saya hasil pakai layangan seperti gambar di samping sangat mengesankan. Ingin sesekali mencoba dengan kamera HP, sekarang bisa di‘jepret’ via sms ‘kan?

Rata-rata kita semua sudah punya HP berkamera. Oke, kita siap membuat panorama sekarang. Jangan anggap enteng, foto HP dengan sedikit rekayasa software (program) sanggup membuat gambar panorama  bagus-bagus untuk blog!

Berikut hasil eksperimennya…

Tips

Obyek untuk panorama, pemandangan, paling mudah ditemui. Amati saja di sekitar kita, mungkin ada deretan puncak gunung, bukit, lembah, sungai, danau, pesisir laut, hutan, kebun, sawah, rumah adat, dan seterusnya. Di kota pemandangannya berbeda; banyak bangunan, bangunan kuno dan moderen (pencakar langit  di kota besar), dan satu lagi, kerumunan orang.

Dari sasaran obyek panorama ini saja kita sudah bisa menarik tip pertama, obyek harus “diam” (statis). Sukar menciptakan panorama kalau obyeknya bergerak seperti kesibukan lalu lintas, pohon dihembus angin kencang, arus kuat aliran air sungai, cuaca (kuat cahaya berubah, awan berubah), …  . Supaya terkesan diam, obyek ditembak dari jarak jauh. Seberapa jauh tidak ada rumusnya. Intuisi saja.

Gara-gara Tip-1, bagian bawah panorama berikut terpaksa dicrop karena banyak orang berlalu-lalang. Ingin diperlihatkan di sini detil pohon dan bangunan, hasil memotret hari ini dengan HP 2 megapiksel (jam 10 pagi, 4 pemotretan). Lihat, ada cacat pada warna langit tetapi oke..lah.

‘Motret pakai HP enaknya tidak usah mikir! Fitur kamera yang bisa diatur sangat terbatas. Iya, ini ‘kan HP yang siap setiap saat. Kamera ikutan. Tinggal berlatih memotret terus, siang dan malam, obyek sembarang, sampai kamera dikuasai betul dengan hasil memuaskan.

Tip ke dua, pengambilan adegan harus tumpang-tindih; aturan “1/3″ dipakai kembali agar program tidak “bingung” dalam penyambungannya nanti.

Gambar kanan sudah betul, informasi yang diambil diulang melampaui ruang “1/3″ foto sebelumnya. Lakukan tindakan serupa untuk adegan selanjutnnya. Lihat warna langit, kuat cahaya langit di zona sambung gambar 1 dan gambar 2. Ada perbedaan? Keterbatasan kamera.

Tip 3. Pertahankan seting kamera dari awal sampai selesai. Hindari mengubah-ubah seting seperti zoom, white balance, dan fitur kamera lainnya.

Tip 4. Pertahankan posisi kamera selama pemotretan. Maksudnya HP tetap tegak, jangan berubah. Maklum HP benda kecil ini dioperasikan dengan tangan; kemungkinan berubah besar sekali. Lalu ada ketinggian. Posisi kamera misalkan setinggi mata, pertahankan, jangan ditinggikan atau direndahkan. Biasanya posisi berubah tanpa disadari.

Download hasil potret dari kamera ke komputer. Dua program kita siapkan untuk membuat panorama, Autostitch (.zip, 1,0 MB) dan IrfanView v4.25 (1,3 MB).

Jalankan Autostitch. Panggil kesemua gambar sekaligus. Program bekerja otomatis, semua gambar disambung jadi satu, panorama! Beri nama dan simpan berkas ini (yang masih setengah-jadi).

This is my favourite Australian expression.  Not only does it fulfill the role of “Ok”, “right away”, or “No problems”, but, for me, it seems to encapsulate the Australian philosophy.  I hope I’ve caught some of that approach to life in this blog.

There’s a range of reasons I decided to do a blog of this holiday.  I guess it was my niece, Grace, who made me think of postcards in a different way after her regular newsletters home from her “gap year” in South America.  I wrote a weekly missive last time we were in Australia, and thought a blog approach would be a good idea this time round.  Not quite sure whether Pepys came to write his diary in the same way – but I’m sure we share the characteristic of being opinionated blighters!

I was also keen to set myself some disciplines of a challenge.  I had been out of sorts under the spell of the old black dog over the last year, including some time off work. I had just hit a brick wall and found it difficult to get anything started, and even more difficulties in completing it.  So the blog seemed a good idea from that side of things too – to get something done to short timescales.  It didn’t have to be a work of art (as if!) - just making sense would do.

It’s been harder than I thought – less so from the discipline of sitting down and writing something quickly (which was where I wanted to maintain some personal progress) – but more so from finding the opportunity to type up the blog, organise photos off the camera and on to a memory stick, and get online to make new posts etc.

For most of the time I’ve been using Ann’s notebook, which is fine except there’s no good photo manipulation software on it, and all the family wants to use it!  I wish I had downloaded IrfanView before we left as that would have made cropping photos and making them smaller (in bytes) easier.

However, I have now caught up with myself having had a good tippy tappy session on the 4 hour flight from Perth to Sydney (before the battery went low).

So this picture of me enjoying a glass of wine last night is probably a fair summary of where I am right now – No worries, mate!  Let’s hope it lasts.

When I have bunches of similar items that I want to sell I have a very effective way to do it.  I got this idea from a woman who was trying to sell some leftovers from her garage sale and she posted a link to an online photo album showing the individual items along with prices.

For example, I just listed a bunch of books for sale on Craigslist and the Rochester Online Classifieds (ROC).  I took pictures of all of the items I am selling.  Using free Kodak EasyShare software I added captions to all of the pictures that include the price of the item(s) pictured and a description, including the condition of the item(s).  I then uploaded the pictures to an online Kodak Gallery album.  In my listing on Craigslist and ROC I include a link to the online album.

The benefits of using an online photo album are:

• Unlimited pictures (Craigslist limits you to 4 pictures and ROC limits you to 400k total email size)
• Better picture quality.  Craigslist downsizes pictures so the quality is not as good and ROC limits you to only small pics
• Buyers are more apt to buy multiple items if they see them altogether
• As items are sold, you only need to remove the pictures from the album so the listing is still valid and requires minimal work.
• If you have additional items you want to sell, you only need to add a picture to the online album.
• It makes it easier to repost your listing as you do not need to attach pictures again to an updated listing.

You can use any online photo hosting site that lets you create albums to share.   Besides Kodak Gallery, you can use  Flickr or Picasa Web albums.

Tip:   It is best if you can reduce the size of the pictures before uploading them to your album.  It make for faster uploading.  I usually do this using photo editing software.  I like to use IrfanView,  or you can use Picasa, both of which are free for personal use. You may also want to crop the pictures as well as reducing them.

Note: All of the websites I mention in this post are free, with the exception of Kodak Gallery.  Kodak Gallery requires a yearly minimal purchase ($5+) to host pictures.

Objetivo: Este tutorial explica como diminuir o peso das imagens usando o programa irfanview.

Diminuir o peso dos arquivos faz com que o site carregue mais rapidamente além de economizar recursos do servidor, como banda de tráfego e espaço em disco. É primordial para manter a boa saúde do site que todas as imagens sejam diminuidas antes de serem carregadas nas galerias.

Uma única galeria em um único post pode dobrar o consumo do site, portanto SEMPRE diminuam o peso das imagens antes de fazer upload para o site. Imagens armazenadas externamente, por exempo no imageshack, não precisam ser diminuidas, porem diminuindo as mesmas acarretará em maior velocidade no carregamento do site.

Material necessário: Irfanview. O irfanview é um visualizador de imagens gratuito e muito leve que suporta o uso de plugins para aumentar seus recursos. Baixem ele clicando aqui.

I’ve been using Irfanview as my imaging software for quite a while now.

I mainly use it to resize pictures, as my phone takes them in very high resolution, and sometimes I find a need to reduce them in size for certain websites (as many have file size limits).

I took a picture earlier and decided to see what it could do with effects – they are certainly limited, however in 3 minutes, I managed to create two images that I rather like.

I’d say the latter is perhaps my favourite avatar of all the images that I’ve used as an avatar in the past. Both were created using simple colour/contrast substitution (so sniff away all you graphic design artists hehe!).

I’d love to be able to do some really cool effects with photo editing software, however at the moment I just don’t have the skills to be able to do that I don’t think… though I’ve been promising myself that I need to learn soon!

Tatsächlich Freeware also gänzlich umsonst gibts folgende Produkte, wobei eigentlich jeder auf gimp zurückgreifen sollte, da dies den Profiprodukten doch am nächsten kommt!

Wer keine Profiambitionnen hat sondern nur ein wenig an Helligkeit und Kontrast rumschrauben möchte ist auch super mit folgenden zwei Programmen bediehnt (hier ist die Bediehnung besonders Nutzerfreundlich und schneller verständlich). Das ist zum einen irfanview und xnview.
