In zilele ce-au trecut am simtit intens semnificatia versurilor acestei piese. Mi-am simtit sufletul inundat de recunostinta fata de cei de la Iris pentru ca s-au gandit sa transmita un mesaj atat de special prin aceasta piesa. Minunea pe care o primim de la viata, cand se naste un copil. Alaturi, in spital, clipa de clipa, de fiul meu de un an si trei luni, bolnavior, am simtit ca, intr-adevar, “viata e darul ce-l primim”, ca el, piticul meu drag, e o “iubire din cer” care-mi lumineaza viata, zi de zi. O minune care ne invata sa “iubim curat” cum spune Felicia Filip pe albumul Cei ce vor fi, aparut in anul 2007. E o piesa superba, deosebita, care mi-a patruns adanc in suflet. Si piticul meu, desi fara chef de viata, asculta si el, zilele astea, cu o casca in ureche, Iris. Bine, e obisnuit de mult cu muzica lor, de cand era in burtica si-l purtam pe la concerte. La primul concert, aveam doar 3 luni de sarcina. Era in februarie 2008. Si, desi in poza se vede ca suntem doar Cristi Minculescu si cu mine, de fapt era si el, piticul meu, in burtica.

 Se spune ca copilul percepe muzica inca din burtica mamei si preferintele mamei se transmit astfel fatului, care, crescand, va avea inclinatie spre aceleasi genuri. Nu stiu daca e sau nu asa, stiu doar ca as fi fericita ca puiul meu sa fie fan Iris. Eu am sa incerc sa-l invat (daca dragostea se poate invata) sa iubeasca Iris, si-am sa-l iau cu mine la concerte dar va ramane la alegerea lui daca va simti ceva deosebit pentru Iris sau nu. Totusi, cred ca nu va putea altfel…

Jag pratade med en kollega om höstdepressionen på jobbet härom dagen. Hon höjde ögonbrynet och tittade lite konstigt på mig, nästan som jag bytt från svenska till afrikanska klick-språket och frågade vad jag snackade om. Jag sa att jag har känt mig lite höstdeppig (precis som resten av halva befolkningen så här års) men att det börjar gå över nu när julen närmar sig. Tydligen har människan aldrig hört talas om att mörker kan få en att seriöst fundera över att skaffa bungalow någonstans i Karibien, allt för att undvika den sibiriska svenska vintern. “Härligt för dig” är allt man svara. Ingen sarkasm där.

Höst och vinter innebär en hel del hemmamys, bakande och pysslande, något som jag inte alls har något emot. Fick städkrupp och rensade vårt gamla skafferi som nu ser ut att vara städat av någon som lider av OCD. Ahh… rent. Hittade raggmunksmix från ‘96. Fräscht. Inte för att jag tror att pulvermixar kan bli mycket äckligare med åren, men jag kände att man faktiskt kan göra något så simpelt som raggmunk från scratch.

För att försöka komma till det ursprungligt tänkta ämnet…

Det var ett tag sedan jag skrev om något asiatiskt. Även om jag inte alls har samma intresse som jag hade för några år sedan då man slukade hela serier till middag och undvek plugg till sista minuten så händer det att man streamar något avsnitt av tv-säsongens “it” serie för att se om asiaterna kan utveckla sina typiska basplots. Svaret är både ja och nej.

Den mest hypade serien hela året har varit den koreanska spionserien IRIS, Koreas dyraste tv-drama i dess historia.  Fylld med kända namn som Lee Byung Hun (The Good, The Bad, The Weird), Tae-hee Kim och T.O.P (från hiphop-gruppen Big Bang) skrapade den ihop en tittarskara på ca 25% av den sydkoreanska befolkningen, dvs 12 miljoner människor (!), en siffra som också ständigt har ökat vecka för vecka. Inte dåligt.

Vad är det som gör ett riktigt framgångsrikt k-drama då? Snygga och kompetenta skådespelare är en självklarhet. Check. Ämnen som fångar olika grupper; gamla/unga, kvinnor/män är alltid en hit. Exploderande hus och hemliga statskonspirationer VS klassisk förutsägbar kärlekstriangel? Check. De som drog ihop casten vet vad dem gjorde. Att ha en Hollywoodskådis som Lee Byung Hun bekvämt i TV-rutan för alla att se gör att serien vinner minst 7 miljoner tittare bara där. En annan tilläggande faktor är T.O.P som spelar seriens “villain”. Inte bara att han är en del av Koreas största musikexport,  Big Bang, vilket ensamt gör att hundratusentals fangirls slår på TV:n bara för att se T.O.P prata americano gangstah, utan hans talang för skådespeleri har även gjort att medel-Svensson (Lee, Kim?) blir nyfikna på rapparen med basrösten och det snurrande fingret som de ständigt ser på TV. Trippelcheck.

Jag har bara sett 5 avsnitt av serien så jag kanske inte gör en riktigt rättvis bedömning av serien när jag säger att den känns som en neverending action-rulle. Man har inte direkt tråkigt då det slängs nya saker i ansiktet på en hela tiden, men det kan lätt bli lite långrandig i längden. Riktigt kudos ska den ha för den är riktig påkostad och den lyckas visa en sida av k-drama som man nästan aldrig får se, nämligen våld och sex. Korea måste vara det enda landet som är värre än amerikanerna när det kommer till censurering av “olämpligt material”. De är inte rädda att bannlysa artister som skrivit tvetydiga lyrics de tror vara subliminala kokain-meddelanden till ungdomar. Oftast får dock detta en motsatt effekt (Umbridge) och alla rebelliska tonåringar gör inget hellre än att köpa det onda albumet. Bara för att. Hur som helst… Gillar man non-stop Die Hard/James Bond/Bourne/Mission Impossible är IRIS är en kalorifylld buffé med godis och bakelser för ögonen. För mig hade det räckt om de gjort en långfilm på kanske 2,5 timme med allt det bästa från serien, alternativt en trilogi á 2 timmar. Fast vem vet, får kanske ge den en chans igen när jag får tid och lust. Efter nyår…?

The winning poems were sent to the State Department and will be featured on IRIS’s website. The five winners were:

The Waiting

I dreamed
From Nigeria, West Africa
Of going to the United States.
I wished my thoughts could make it so.
Not thinking it possible,
I waited.

When asked if I wanted to sit for a test,
A chance to come to America,
I said, “Yes!”
And again,
I waited.

I tested,
Then tested again.
first a hundred… then thirty-six of us.
Finally,
I was summoned
To the state capital,
Gombe.

At the Ministry of Education
I saw my competition,
But we were competitors no more
Having received the highest scores.
We were off to America.

But…
Now January,
We wouldn’t leave till August,
Eight months
To think and wait.
Worry and wonder.
Poking and prodding,
Vaccinating and x-raying,
Doctors ensuring we were healthy.

August,
Eight hours on a bus.
Going to Abuja, the capital-
Three trips in all
Waiting.
Orientation experiences
Meeting,
Learning,
Interviewing.
The United States’ Embassy,
Whoa!
An interview with a white man.
Nervous, I chose to go first.

August 4, 6:00 a.m. – board bus to Abuja.
9:00 p.m. – board plane
Sixteen hours later – arrive in Des Moines, IA.
I, Daniel Ishaya, am in the
United States of America!

I want to see my host family,
Instead we go to eat.
Whoa! American food.
Scary thought – scarier sight!

We are blessed.
To go to Washington, D.C.
I want to meet my host family,

My New Experiences in America

My life in America is very fun
My journey began under the sun

I met my host parents and they were glad
For me to call them mom and dad

I enjoy spending time with them

Pippi is our family dog’s name
I run from her but it is no game

I enjoy the American food very much
And I take time to eat a bunch

Spaghetti my mom did make
And yummy cookies she did bake

Each day I am so very bold
But oh! It is so very cold

The trees were very large and green
But now the wind and rain have stripped them clean

Ogden High School is very busy
I learned this when my pop got fizzy

Meeting new friends and going new places
I tried to remember all the new faces

My classes are hard and my teacher’s are funny
My history teacher …………. he is hyper as a bunny

I joined volleyball on my second day
We ran a lot to my dismay

I notice girls clothing as they are walking by
Are those shorts legal? I cover my eyes

Shifting classes confusing me
Lost I always seemed to be

Typing is not my specialty
I get lost within all the keys

I cha cha to the left and then to the right
Homecoming here was such a delight

During football games I cheer and stand
Especially during the marching band

Students at Ogden are very kind
I ask them help and they don’t mind

I really like my family and school
I promise to teach and don’t break the rules.

The Dream

It never makes sense to me… this LAZY American ‘T’

The YES7 mid-year meeting was held in Waterloo during the weekend of November 20-22. At the conclusion of the weekend, the IRIS staff showed this slideshow.

It contains photos of the 60 Nigerian and Tanzanian students getting adjusted to their lives in the Midwest during the first four months of the 10-month Youth Exchange and Study Program (YES).

The first part of the slideshow contains photos from when the students first arrived in the U.S., with their American host families, siblings and friends, at school and homecoming and getting involved in sports.

The second part of the slideshow contains photos of the students attending the Global Youth Institute, volunteering, trying new things and just having fun!

“Tenang..tenang..tenang..“, kami berbisik sesama sendiri. Jangan gabra. Kita tak salah apa-apa. Tak hisap dadah. Tak kacau dara orang. Tak makan rasuah. Gitar terus di-strumingkan memainkan melodi-melodi indah riang ria.

Tak lama kemudian Kereta peronda polis itu menghampiri pondok konkrit. Keluar seorang berbadan gempal, perut kental ke hadapan. Di belakangnya di-iringan dua orang lagi lelaki yang kurus-kurus tapi sasa.

“Assalamualaikum“, sapa si perut kental dengan suara authority abis. Mungkin dia bos kepada 2 orang lagi tu. “Waalaikumusalam“..jawab kami dengan harmoni. Ni kalau bukan nak suruh kami blah, mesti nak bagi sesi ceramah secara percuma. Takde ke tempat yang tak payah dengar ceramah?

Nasib baik pihak universiti ada ajar teknik-teknik untuk menghadapi interview, jadi kami dah bersedia awal. Konfiden kena letak tinggi-tinggi. Jawab jangan terketar-ketar kena parkinson.

Soalan 2 : Ni siapa punya kereta? Kami bagi Ic dengan lessen,kemudian dia arahkan 2 orang yang kurus-kurus tu inspect kereta kami. Lepas tengok takda apa yang mencurigakan, dia sambung balik soal-siasat.

Soalan 4 : Siapa yang benarkan kamu masuk ke sini.

Takde pulak dia tanya pasal pengalaman kerja.Pihak Perempuan dah mula rasa tak senang dengan provokasi demi provokasi. Sedangkan aku sekadar anggap tu sebagai prosedur biasa. Dan memang style polis selalunya kurang ajar, yang sopan dan respek orang ni agak ditelan zaman jugakla.

“Bla-bla-bla-balai polis-bla bla-bla-universiti-bla-bla.check air kencing-bla-bla-bla”, polis cuba-cuba gertak kami. Walaupun dia tanya macam setan, kami tetap jawab macam malaikat. Rasanya jawapan kami dah cukup elok, tapi apakan daya. Polis tetap polis, kami hanyalah pihak tak berkepentingan, hanya dipandang enteng oleh mereka yang ada kuasa.

It’s been only 2 days since I saw episode 9 of IRIS subbed by Team IRIS or the WITHS2 team! Normally I’d have to wait over a week to watch the next episode with subtitles, but these two episodes came out fairly fast :]

And oh boy, is it getting to the climax. AHHHHH I seriously can’t wait until episode 11 with subtitles is released. I can always watch the raw version, but why would I do that when I don’t understand anything? That would just make me want the subs to come out more so I could rewatch the episode..and that kind of wastes time xD

On a side note, I had no idea that Lee Byung Hun is 39 years old..He’s so hot that he looks 10 years younger than he is!! xD

Rose still felt the loss of her soulmate, but she had learned to take an interest in life around her. One of her great pleasures that also proved very therapeutic was gardening. She imagined her mother and her grandmother working the same soil before her, coaxing the seedlings up into the sunlight and helping them grow to bear fruit.

She also enjoyed playing with little Blossom, her niece. It was a blessing to have new life in the house.

Blossom’s Aunt Poppy also enjoyed time with the little cutie. She sometimes wondered what it would have been like to follow the motherhood path in life, but she was happy with her art and music. Her legacy would be in the family paintings hanging in the house.

Blossom knew who her mommy was, though. Lily showered her daughter with love every chance she got.

Iris showed an interest in her little cousin, and Lily let her help out in the nursery sometimes. It didn’t seem long ago that Iris herself was sleeping in a crib.

With so many family members around to help with Blossom, Lily and Monty had time to have a quiet dinner alone sometimes. The birth of their daughter had brought them closer together than ever, as each of them saw a little bit of the other in their baby. Every time they looked into each other’s eyes, it was love all over again.

The sisters were all spending more time together these days, too, since they had either achieved or were close to achieving their hard-fought goals in life. They sensed time was passing, and they made the effort to find time to watch a movie together, discuss a painting or a novel or a newly discovered star, or just share a light moment.

………But the family didn’t just hang out around the house. They went to work and study and explore, too. Monty was enjoying his work at the bistro, and had been promoted to vegetable slicer.

Reed enjoyed the freedom of being a teen. He went to tour city hall and take a charisma class, then visited the park. He found himself in a swarm of butterflies, and that sparked an interest in collecting. That day, he got a good start with five different kinds of insects.

Afterward he spent some time hanging out in the park. His Aunt Daisy was there, too, chatting with some older folks. Reed didn’t quite catch what they were saying, but he thought they might be talking about the latest gangster movie or maybe the new end-of-the-world flick.

Daisy said she was going to a game later, and something about checking the entrances and exits. Funny, Reed had never known she was that safety conscious.

Iris liked riding the schoolbus with her big brother Reed. She was also excited about taking a fishing class with him, although his first catch was way bigger than hers.

One event that happened in town was not nearly so nice. Just as the family was growing beyond their grief over Cedrick’s death, Lily got a call to rush to the bistro. The paramedics were doing their best when she got there, but it was too late. Monty was gone.

This was not long before Blossom’s birthday, so the family planned to have a quiet little cake ceremony at home. Everybody tried to put a brave face on it, but Iris couldn’t help but feel for her cousin, who might not even remember her daddy when she got older.

Blossom turned out to be a cheerful little toddler with fair hair and laughing eyes. Much as Lily’s heart ached, when she held her little darling she knew that part of Monty lived on in her arms. Her sisters were amazed at her resilience.

Except for Daisy, that is. Daisy had run off somewhere on the other side of town. What was she up to? And who had seen her?

I am already at home. Fortunately I don’t have english and history lessons.. My english teacher is ill and history lessons are canceled because of the test paper.. I think it was okay. I had enough time =) Hm.. So I just can hope that it will be a good grade ^^

Here’s a look at the filming of action spy drama IRIS starring Lee Byung Hun, Kim Tae Hee and Kim So Yeon. They were filming in Hungary. Photos of Lee Byung Hun concentrating on his script and Kim Tae Hee doing action scenes. Frankly, i wouldn’t have imagined Kim Tae Hee playing a role with lots of action and fight scenes. We’ll just have to wait and see how she fares in IRIS.

Hyun Joon is back in Korea and with revenge in mind… 2 reasons for working with North Korea which is revenge against the Vice Director and against the nation of Korea for using him and then abandoning him… hmm… and quite a lot of things happened… but a bit hard on the fingers so…
