Hi my names Liam and I will be visiting a pub every day in 2010. I will be searching for the best Irish pub. But not just that I will also be promoting YOUR product, business or music. Not just here in Ireland we have been invited to Scotland and Holland too but it HAS to be an Irish pub. Every day I will be making a video and taking photos from the pub and uploading them all over the internet.

Any company can sponsor a day and have their ad below and at the beginning and end of the video.

Our last PuB NiGHT was amazing. We were really glad to meet so many new international students. Thanks to all for coming. It was really exciting to watch people play “Beer pong” – a popular Canadian game – played usually at parties, by college and university students.
Let me tell you more “Beer pong”. Players throw a ping-pong ball across a table with the intent of landing the ball in a cup of beer on the other end. Whoever’s cup the ball lands in has to chug the beer! This is a game that can be enjoyed by both the player and audience alike.
What I would like to tell you is that we finally got the Ceili’s/INTERNeX official ticket.
Here some detail about for these tickets. You can enter the PuB NiGHT before 9:30pm for free. That will as well help you to avoid the usual huge waiting line. In addition, you can get a complimentary drink before 9pm. You should not miss this great deal. Please drop by our office to pick your tickets up before the next PuB NiGHT at “Ceili’s”(640 Smithe st).
We are looking forward to see all of you next Wednesday.

Location: Brugstraat 50, 6221 ED Maaastricht
Website

Located conveniently just across the St. Servatius bridge, John Mullins Irish Pub is a large restaurant and bar serving traditional Irish fare and nearly any kind of Irish drink you desire. When you walk in the front door, you will notice that the pub is done up in a classic style with dark wood, a very long bar, and maybe a few too many Guinness posters. The lighting is kept low and the ambiance has a certain charm quite distinct from the charm of a Dutch brown cafe. Beyond the initial pub seating area, which includes a bright but crowded window section, you can find two more sitting areas towards the back that helps the pub accommodates their evening customers. The food service covers the gamut from an Irish breakfasts to high tea to a nice sounding weekly special for two.

John Mullins appears to cater to a young professional clientele and a fairly international one, at least from what I’ve seen. If you visit during a football, rugby, or hurling match you can be sure to find John Mullins packed with locals and foreigners there to catch the game on one of several large televisions. They have other events as well. Once a week, usually on Saturdays, a live band comes in to play. The music tends towards pop and alternative, but other bands come in as well. Every <del datetime="2009-11-24T21:14:14+00:00">Wednesday</del> Tuesday, a quiz night is held in both Dutch and English. There is no cover charge, and the quiz only costs 2,50 euros to play.

Dan and I have have only eaten one meal there (a moist and tasty fish & chips), but we’ve visited enough time to try their appetizers and drink their beer. From my limited experience in Ireland, the pub feels very authentic and I find the ambiance to be extremely comfortable. They had a unique cheese platter, which was very tasty, and they serve Korenwolf white beer. It’s not Wieckse Witte (my favorite) but it is close enough. The only real strike against John Mullins is<del datetime="2009-11-24T21:14:14+00:00"> that they don’t serve bitterballen and</del> (I’m told bitterballen are part of the ‘partysnacks’ appetizer) the service can be slow during the off hours. That may be different during peak times when they have more staff, but we usually go there at off times to work on our writing.

In fact, one of the things Dan and I like the best is that John Mullins doesn’t mind if we come in to have a few drinks and write or read. They even have boardgames in the window area. I like to work on my blog away from the Internet so it is always nice to find a place that is willing to accommodate us. Throw in the weekly special for two: the chefs special of the week, soup, and dessert, plus half a liter of wine for only 35 euros and John Mullins becomes quite a deal.

Update: Thank you Max for your corrections. I’ve updated them above.

Thanks Scott for Ginger Mania’s first hilarious ginger sighting! Sorry the image is so blurry, guys; this was taken on a phone (and with some stealth from what I can tell!) I’m loving the combo of overalls + drinking at an Irish pub. This ginger obviously missed the memo that dressing like a farmer went out of style around the 1900s (unless he actually is a farmer, in which case he should have considered changing before going out in public). You can’t tell in the picture, but according to Scott this man was also sporting dreadlocks. So basically we have a farmer-hippie-Irish ginger. I’m loving it.

On a side note, if you or your friends see a commical ginger in public, snap a pic and tell me about it! You can e-mail me at amandaleigh.peterson@gmail.com, tweet me at amandapanda8, or send me a Facebook message. I’d love to share in the delight of your rare ginger spottings!!

- Da’, ce să-i dau? – insistă Mirela.

- Pune-i coniac vechi!

Last night, we had a great time! I am really happy that many people joined our pub night, thanks to every one who showed up!! Even though we arrived at ‘“Ceili’s”’ around 7 p.m., there were already a lot of people inside because of the Canucks Game, this generated a huge waiting line outside. People who came around 9p.m. had to wait between 1 and a half hour to enter .I recommend that you come to “Ceili’s” around 7 pm, if it is possible for you. Next pub night will also be on Wednesday night. So please drop by at “Ceili’s” and join us to expand your network of friends.

Hey guys,
So tonight is our weekly PuB NiGHT at Doolin’s Irish Pub (654 Nelson Street). But this Wednesday is going to be slightly different then all the rest…it is Mike’s last PuB NiGHT. Mike has been an intern at INTERNeX for the past five months, and sadly the time has come to say goodbye to him. I have had the pleasure of knowing Mike for just three weeks but for those of you have known him longer I’m sure you all know how much he has grown. In case you are unaware of Mike’s life story, I’m going to give you a brief little recap. At the tender age of 23, this shy little Dutch boy left his home with his clogs and block of cheese in hand to work in Vancouver, Canada. Completely astonished by the all the high-rises which had replaced his comforting windmills back home, Mike was determined to make friends. Working as an Intern at INTERNeX, he attended the weekly PuB NiGHTS but hated the limelight and ultimately faded in the background because of his overwhelming shyness.

As the weeks went by Mike began to come out of his shell tremendously and everyone enjoyed the antics of this little curly golden haired Dutch boy.

Soon Mike was out of control and just wanted to hog all the spot light. This shy little boy named Mike had transformed into his alter ego better known as M to the Ike!

Now the date of his departure is slowly but surely approaching and we are all sad to see him go. So let’s try and give M to the Ike one more memorable night so he doesn’t forget us all too quickly. We wish you good luck Mike and you will not easily be forgotten because we all actually do like you, no matter how terrified I look in this picture. See you all tonight!

Hey, how is everyone doing?

So this Wednesday was my first INTERNeX PuB NiGHT! I was a little nervous at first because I didn’t really know anyone but I had a lot of fun. It was lovely finally getting to meet some of you and everyone made me feel very welcome. Doolin’s Irish Pub was a perfect place for our PuB NiGHT as there was no issue of anyone having to wait outside in the cold. I hope you all enjoyed it as much as I did and we have posted some pictures up on Flickr.

I’m not sure as to whether I will keep the same location for next week or if we might try Ceili’s or another brand new location. So let me know what you guys think because I really value your input. Just email me if you have any suggestions lauren@internexcanada.com

Hello, how are you doing??

There were lots of people last Wednesday for our INTERNeX PuB NiGHT. It was great!!!We went to “Ceili’s” around 7pm. I was surprised that a huge waiting line had already been there. Fortunately, we entered in the pub through the VIP line. You can see how popular “Ceili’s” is for international students. They have a second and even a third floor. Every floor is full of people who enjoy talking with their friends. Especially every Wednesday, they offer us to get a beer for $1.That is one of the reason that there is a huge waiting line in front of the pub on every Wednesday.

We had a good mixture of nationality at our INTERNeX PuB NiGHT. People who came this time are from Germany, Netherlands, Sweden, Japan, Denmark, Norway and Korea. We can talk about not only life of Vancouver but also our country. It is a great opportunity to touch other cultures.

After we had a good time at “Ceili’s”, we went to another Irish pub. It turns, we could enjoy being with around 20 international students there. It was so much fun!!!

I hope the next PuB NiGHT will be as great as the last one. Check out our event calendar on our INTERNeX website. Please don’t forget to bring your ID to prove you are over 19 years old.

We are look forward to seeing all of you next Wednesday!!!

Hi everyone, my name is Vince Breuer and I am from the Netherlands and I got my internship thanks to Internex. I am working for five months at a touring company called West Trek. During my internship I have to do a special assignment for school, which is organizing a special event during Christmas. I would like to invite all of you to come and join us for this night.

Just sitting at home during Christmas Holiday because you didn’t make any plans?

“When things go wrong and will not come right, though you do the best you can, when life looks black as the hour of night, a pint of plain is your only man”

It could barely have been foreseen that something that started as an excuse for a pub crawl on a slow Sunday afternoon could turn into a day of good banter and storytelling, traversing the spots that thousands and millions of weary travelers have trod before and ultimately in the conception of this Blog. Five pubs in one day, it’s not a hard thing in Dublin City, it‘s near impossible to get from A to B without passing at least one watering hole. It’s not exactly a cultural experiment either; it’s the sort of thing you do every weekend anyways without thinking about it. It’s only when you plot the five pubs beforehand, the nature and character of those five pubs and go there with the idea of having the craic while critiquing the place at the same time, drinking decent pints whilst judging them, and singing a few songs and telling a few tales in between. Then it becomes cultural.

So that’s what we did on the first Sunday in September. Five pubs were chosen and five brave warriors met in The Long Hall on Georges Street for the first pint of the day. For those of you who have never been in the Long Hall, it’s an unusual pub, decorated with early 20th Century trappings, rich shag carpets and wood panelling. The pint is bloody gorgeous too, if a little on the soft side.

The Long Hall: photo by Flickr user inaki_naiz.

It’s the kind of pub that is full of shirt bedecked office workers on a Friday evening but on a Sunday afternoon, the crowd was sparse. Not that we were giving out. And in a welcome development, though most pubs we had walked past to get here had ‘de football’ (English of course) blaring at full volume, the telly wasn’t even switched on here and the music was down low. A grand spot for a bit of natter; and during the natter we find out it’s a pub with a bit of history too – Ever seen the video for Thin Lizzy’s “Old Town?” Well the bar the lads are propping up is none other than the one in The Long Hall! So a quick toast to Phil and the boys and we were out the door, the barman giving us a shout of Slán as we left. Not too many places you get that either.

So next up was McDaids, just off Grafton Street. We didn’t stay long, as the barman gruffly demanded ID off each of us (I haven’t been asked for ID in five years or so… I didn’t know whether to be happy or angry) and then only begrudgingly asked what we wanted. The Chelsea Vs. Liverpool game was blaring and we decided it wasn’t worth it. Maybe the barman was a Liverpool fan (they were losing 2-0) or we just caught the place on a bad day because I genuinely like this pub; just definitely not that Sunday. As a change of plan, we headed for Kehoes, just the far side of Grafton Street. We found a nice quiet spot upstairs in the side room adjoining the Upstairs bar.

Kehoes: photo by Flickr user boggerthelogger. Used under a Creative Commons License.

For those of you who have never had the pleasure of scooping in Kehoes, the upstairs bar is basically the living quarters of John Kehoe (long since passed away ) transformed by sticking a counter and some taps in it. It’s like drinking in your grannies sitting room. The old pictures adorning the wall were the source of many anecdotes as Pearse, Connolly and Heuston were debated and dissected. They say you should never talk politics or religion in a pub. It was a bit difficult in this place… With pictures of the 50th anniversary of the rising on one wall and Bono on the other! The pint was nice and cold, the head stayed white and the glass was left with the magic seven rings; always a good sign in my book. So with a few pints on us we headed on towards The Dawson Lounge.

The Dawson Lounge’s claim to fame is that it’s Dublin’s smallest pub. With two other groups of five or so in the place, there was not a stool to be had. We were disappointed to find out we couldn’t collect a Guinness 250 beermat commemorating this place but then again, it’d be hard to paint a picture of the place, what with there just being a door and a tiny hanging sign above it!

Dawson Lounge: photo from dublin-in-pictures.blogspot.com

Not much you can say about this place, great pint, nice and snug, the kind of place you’d love to step into on a cold and wet day to read the paper or watch the news over a pint of plain. And don’t be dissuaded by the shortness of the review for this place; sure don’t they say it’s not the size that counts.

The next pub was to be Toners on Baggot Street, a great little boozer this, one of my secret hideaways- the kind of place where you can happily sit in the corner with a pint and a book and not be disturbed by anyone except the barman asking if you want another pint! We were greeted cheerily as we entered and we were glad to get in out of the cold and get a much-anticipated pint. I can’t recommend this pub enough; nice and snug, a great pint and a pub with a great history, frequented by Behan and O’Brien as it was.

Toners: photo by Flickr user Mr Pauly D.
I was sad to leave but we were nearing the summit of our challenge, and the cream of the crop. I think we peaked too early by deciding to include Mulligans of Poolbeg Street in our first five pubs for it truly is one of the best pints in the city. There is nothing polished about this pub, it’s old Dublin, (very old Dublin, the place was established in 1732;) rough and ready. Bare wood floors and nicotine scarred walls, but genuine and welcoming at the same time, far from the super pubs Dublin has come to know and despise. A great place for a bit of banter, the pub was well populated with young and old, bent over pints, chatting, laughing and slagging. A smashing pint aswell, and that makes all the difference.

Mulligans: photo by Flickr user Diego

We forgot ourselves here and indulged in a few more than we originally meant, but it was hard not to and besides, this was to be the end of our road for this week, and the end of the first chapter in a story I hope we endeavour to keep going. Pints, mates and the craic, what more could you ask for?

September’s five pubs were:
1. The Long Hall, Georges Street, Dublin 2.
2. John Kehoe’s, 9 South Anne’s Street, Dublin 2.
3. The Dawson Lounge, 25 Dawson Street, Dublin 2.
4. Toner’s, 139 Baggot Street Lower, Dublin 2.
5. Mulligan’s, 8 Poolbeg Street, Dublin 2.

Despite being Ground Zero for a lot of things (Hahvahd elitists, jaywalking tourists), Harvard Square can’t seem to produce a decent set of nachos without our help. We’ve hit the usual suspects in the area but are having trouble motivating ourselves to hit the plethora of rather generic bars that probably have rather generic nachos. Fortunately, Border margaritas are, among other things, excellent motivators. After two apiece and basket of tortilla chips as a pregame, we hit Tommy Doyles, looking for nachos but not expecting much. We got what we came for in their nachos with chicken:

Appearance: (6) A little dark, but maybe it was the lighting? One reviewer thought that the jalapenos were a little wan, the other thought that they looked fine. While multicolored chips were used, they were mostly blue, adding to the dark appearance. Despite us having requested them, neither guacamole nor salsa were provided, which knocked the brightness down by a few notches.

Quality of Ingredients: (6) Smashley repeatedly contended that the cheese was very good. We also appreciated the inclusion of black beans, always a plus. The chips were homemade but on the greasy side, and chicken, while lacking in flavor, was perfectly moist.

Distribution of Toppings: (4) While the cheese was well-melted, in quickly congealed upon reaching the table, and tended to slide off of the chips when we pulled them out. As a result, without the mortar of melted cheese, the other toppings refused to adhere to the chips as well, making for a frustrating nacho experience. The hat of sour cream became oppressive and hard to get past to reach the toppings.

Price: (7) With chicken, $10, which is nothing exceptional.

Overall: 23. Our quest for good nachos in Harvard Square presses on!
