미국에서 다시 M&A가 되살아나고 있다. 경기 회복의 신호인지도 모르겠다. 얼마 전 Google이 mobile 광고 회사인 Admob을 $750 million (약 9000억 원)에 인수하기로 결정했다. 구글은 앞으로 한 달에 한 개 꼴로 회사를 인수할 것이라고 발표한 바 있다. [주] Admob은 내가 괜찮은 회사라고 생각해서 관심 있게 보고 있었던 차였길래 이 인수 소식이 더 흥미롭게 다가왔다.

그보다 더 전의 일이지만, Intuit의 mint.com $170 million (약 2000억 원) 규모의 인수도 매우 흥미로웠다. mint.com은 내가 따로 소개해 보고 싶은 웹사이트인데, 개인 자산 관리를 아주 편하게 해 주는 서비스이다. Intuit은 이미 Quicken이라는 Mint와 비슷한 서비스를 가지고 있었지만, mint.com의 품질이 우수한 것을 보고 $170 million이라는 돈을 주고 구입했다. 많은 사람들이 아주 현명한 M&A였다고 평가했다.

자고 일어나면 한 건씩 터지는 미국 기업들의 M&A 소식. 하지만 한국의 대기업이 기술력 있는 중소기업을 인수했다는 소식은 듣기 힘들다. 왜일까 궁금했다. 미국에서는 기업을 세울 때 IPO를 해야만 exit할 수 있다고 생각하는 사람은 없다. 오히려 MS, Google, CISCO 등 대기업에 매각하는 걸 더 가능성 있는 exit strategy로 생각하고, 투자자들에게도 그렇게 설명한다. 한편, 한국에서는 투자를 받을 때 회사 매각을 전제로 하는 경우는 보지 못했다. 물론 없지야 않겠지만 그게 투자자들에게 좋게 보일 지는 잘 모르겠다.

얼마 전 IDG Ventures에서 일하는 Henry (@ohohenry)와 Palo Alto에서 만나 이런 얘기를 풀어놓았다. 한국에는 왜 M&A가 많지 않을까? 있다 하더라도 왜 M&A를 통해 성공적으로 시장에서 성공한 케이스가 많지 않을까? 얘기를 하다보니 생각이 정리되어 글로 남겨볼까 한다.

한국의 대표적인 M&A 성공 사례는 네이버와 한게임의 합병이다. 내 기억에 의하면 Naver는 별로 존재감이 없는 검색 엔진이었다. 더 좋은 인터페이스와 검색 quality, 그리고 더 큰 마케팅 파워를 가진 empas가 잘 나가고 있었고, Naver는 엠파스, 야후 등과 경쟁하며 힘든 싸움을 하고 있는 수많은 검색엔진 중 하나였다. 그 판도가 한 번에 뒤바뀐 사건이 네이버와 한게임의 합병이다. 한게임은 이미 돈을 벌고 있었다. 한게임의 유료화를 통해 지속적인 cash가 들어오기 시작했고, 그걸 Naver 브랜드를 알리는 데 사용하고.. 검색엔진과 인터넷 게임의 결합이 직접적인 시너지 효과가 있는지는 모르겠지만 어쨌든 Naver 한게임은 이렇게 합병을 통해 화려하게 성장했다.

SK 커뮤니케이션즈의 싸이월드 인수도 내가 보기엔 성공적이다. 네이트온과 싸이월드를 통합하는 건 기가 막힌 아이디어였고, 그 덕에 MSN 메신저를 쓰던 수많은 사람들이 네이트온으로 옮겨 탔고, 싸이월드의 수명은 수년이 지난 지금까지도 이어지고 있다.

그 외 어떤 사례가 있을까 궁금해서 중소기업청에서 발간한 “2007년 벤처기업 M&A 성공사례집” 이라는 글을 찾았다. 다양한 사례가 있었지만 성공 사례는 거의 없었다. 물론 크고 작은 성공적인 M&A 사례는 있겠지만, 별로 기억에 남을 만한 성공적인 사례는 별로 없다. 실패 사례가 대부분이다. 왜 그런걸까? 왜 한국에서는 M&A가 많지 않을까? 있더라도 왜 M&A 성공 케이스가 많지 않을까? 특히 CISCO, Oracle, Google, Apple, Microsoft같은 미국 대기업들은 어느 정도 성장하고 나면 공격적인 M&A를 통해 innovation을 일으키고 시장을 확장해 나가는데 왜 삼성, 현대, LG가 다른 기업을 acquire했다는 소식은 거의 듣기 힘들까? 하는 의문이 들었다.

그러면서  재미난 생각을 해 봤다. 삼성전자가 iRiver를 샀더라면 어땠을까 하는 것이다. 아이리버는 제품을 잘 만들어 시장을 선두하고 있었고 삼성은 자원이 많고 강력한 global marketing 팀을 가지고 있었으니 말이 된다고 생각한다. iRiver는 내가 대학 다닐 때 히트를 쳤는데, 그 때 서울대에 방문했던 양덕준 사장의 이야기를 들으며 대단한 사람이고, 존경할만한 사람이라는 생각을 했다. 특히 직접 디자인을 하려 하지 않고 Inno Design과의 합작을 통해 감탄할 만한 디자인의 제품을 내놓은 것을 보고 앞으로 크게 되겠구나 생각했고, 1, 2년이 지나자 세계 MP3 플레이어 시장에서 좋은 리뷰를 받고 market share를 높여서 뿌듯하게 생각한 적이 있다. 그러나 이는 오래 가지 않았다. 삼성전자가 아이리버를 누른 것이다. 2005년과 2008년 국내 MP3 시장 점유율은 다음과 같다.

아이리버가 성공하고 MP3 시장이 성장하는 걸 보자 가만히 있던 삼성은 Yepp이라는 제품을 만들어서 마케팅하기 시작했고, 그로부터 수 년이 지난 지금은 국내 MP3 시장 점유율 1위를 차지했다. 이 자체에는 아무런 문제가 없다. 중소기업이 먼저 시장을 발굴하고 대기업이 경쟁을 하기 시작한 것이고, 결국 싸움에서 이긴 것이다. 그러나 뭐가 문제일까? 해외 시장에서 경쟁력이 약해졌다는 것이 문제이다. MP3 player를 처음 시작해서 시장을 선두한 것은 Apple이 아니라 iRiver이다. 아이리버가 삼성과 싸우느라 에너지를 소진하는 동안 Apple이 놀라운 제품을 내놓았고, 결국 지금 미국에서 iRiver나 Yepp은 절대 찾아볼 수가 없다. 미국 뿐 아니라 유럽, 호주 등의 국가에서도 당연히 같은 상황이다. Top 10에 삼성도 없고 아이리버도 없다. Sandisk가 놀랍게도 6위를 차지했다. 만약 삼성이 iRiver와 경쟁하는 대신 그 premium을 기꺼이 지불한 후 힘을 합쳐서 세계 시장을 공략했으면 어땠을까? 완전 가정이지만, 삼성이 iPod과 같이 혁신적인 제품을 내놓았다면 어땠을까? 그렇지 않더라도, iPod과 충분히 경쟁할 만한 제품을 내놓았다면 어땠을까?

약간의 조사를 해 봤다. 아이리버가 왜 결국 패했는지를 잘 정리한 블로그에서 다음과 같은 댓글을 보았다.

1. 루키페르 2008/01/09 14:38아 이리버 한창 잘나갈때 삼성전자에서 애플에 메모리를 대량의 가격할인을 통해 팔았죠. 그때 이미 레인콤을 노린 전략이라는 소리가 많았습니다. 결국 가격경쟁력이 높아진 아이팟이 국내시장을 잠식하고 레인콤이 휘청거리게 되면서 삼성 역시 자사 MP3P의 시장점유율을 높입니다. 직접 공격하면 욕먹을것 같으니 뒤통수 친거죠.
2. 전상규 2008/01/09 14:42삼성에서 메모리를 헐갑에 애플한테 공급하면서 아이리버가 가격에서 경쟁이 안됐죠.
   전형적인 국내 중소업체 죽이기 전략이었습니다.
   공고하게 다져진 국내 1위 업체의 아성을 애플을 통해서 우회적으로 흔든후 그 틈새시장을 삼성에서도 어느정도 차지했습니다.

사실을 확인할 수 없기 때문에 위 말을 믿을 수는 없지만, 적어도 내가 이 사건에 대해 갖게 되는 생각은 중소기업이 혁신적인 제품을 내놓았을 때 대기업이 리소스를 투입해서 기술을 복제하고 돈으로 밀어붙여서 중소기업을 죽이는 대신, 그 가치를 인정하고 돈을 지불한 후 힘을 합쳐서 세계 시장에서 승부를 보는 것이 더 맞는 이야기가 아닌가 하는 것이다.

구글의 Youtube 인수 사건은 삼성이 아이리버에 대해 대응한 것과 완전히 대조된다. 유투브가 인기를 얻어가던 시절 구글 역시 Google Video라는 서비를 하고 있었다. Youtube, Google Video 모두 써봤는데 둘 다 인터페이스, 기능, 성능 면에서는 별 차이가 없다. 어떤 면에서는 Google Video가 더 우수한 점도 있다. 그러나 구글은 2006년에 Youtube를 $1.65 billion (약 2조원)이라는 어마어마어마한 가격에 인수했다. Youtube를 구글이 똑같이 만들고, 마케팅하고, 회원 수를 늘렸다면 얼마의 돈이 들었을까? 아무리 많이 들어도 2조원이 들 수는 없다. 많이 잡아도 1000억이면 충분히 하고도 남지 않을까? 그랬으면 Youtube는 사라지고 지금 사람들이 Google Video를 쓰고 있을 지도 모를 일이다.

하지만, 구글은 그렇게 하지 않았다. 유투브가 만든 기술을 사서 죽여버리는 대신, 그 가치에 대해 충분한 돈을 지불한 후 Youtube 엔지니어들과 힘을 합치고 Google의 서비스에 Youtube를 통합해서 엄청난 부가가치를 창출하고 있다. 물론 2조원이라는 거액의 돈을 회수하는데 까지 시간이 걸리고, 그렇게 되면 이 인수합병이 과연 옳았는가 하는 비판도 있을 수 있지만, 적어도 지금까지 봐서는 나는 성공적이라고 평가한다.

한편, “한국의 구글” NHN이 했던 두 가지 인수 사건은 눈살을 찌뿌리게 만든다. 하나는 검색 엔진 ‘첫눈’이고, 또 하나는 미투데이이다. 첫눈은 350억 원이라는 제법 비싼 값에, 그리고 미투데이는 20억원이라는 완전 헐값에 인수되었는데, 첫눈 인수는 가격이 문제가 아니라, 인수를 한 후에 어떻게 했느냐는 게 문제다. 내가 알기로는 첫눈은 네이버가 인수한 후 그냥 없애 버렸다 (경쟁자 없애기). 미투데이는 네이버가 아주 잘 쓰고 있다. 그런데 이건 가격이 문제다. 겨우 20억이라니… Wall Street Journal에 따르면, Twitter의 현재 가치가 $1 billion, 즉 1.2조원이다. 1조원 대 20억… 정말 큰 차이가 아닐 수 없다.

왜 이렇게 다를까? 왜 미국에서는 한국에 비해 acquisition에 대해 훨씬 적극적일까? 이유는 수없이 많겠지만, 나는 다음과 같은 이유가 크다고 생각한다.

1. 표절(plagiarism)을 엄단하고 다른 사람이 가진 지적 재산을 인정하는 문화

한국에서 교육받고, 한국에서 회사 생활하다가 미국 학교에 와서 제일 크게 다르게 느꼈던 부분 중 하나이다. 미국 학교 및 기관에서 표절에 대해 가진 기준은 한국의 그 어떤 곳에서 느꼈던 것보다도 엄격하다. plagiarism이 발각되면 퇴학이고, 학위를 받은 경우에는 학위 취소가 될 수도 있다. Business School에서는 case를 굉장히 많이 쓴다. 이게 근데 상당히 비싸다. 케이스 하나당 7불 가까이 하는데, 어떤 케이스는 겨우 5장에 불과한 경우도 있다. 5장짜리 종이… 이에 한국돈으로 만원 가까이를 지불하는 거다. 사실 나는 좀 아까운 생각이 들었다. 그냥 복사해서 쓰면 안되나 하는 생각도 들었다. 하지만 그 누구도 그렇게 복사해서 쓰는 사람은 없었다. 그렇기 때문에 복사한 케이스를 가지고 있다가 친구한테 들켰다가는 “ethical하지 않은 사람”으로 낙인되는 거다. 한마디로 범죄인이다. 미국에서는 어렸을 때부터 표절에 대해 워낙 철저하게 교육하기 때문에 정상적인 교육을 받은 사람이라면 대가를 치루고 사서 쓰는 것을 너무나도 당연하게 생각한다. 이는 소프트웨어에 대해서도 마찬가지이다.
이 이야기를 왜 하는가 하면, 아마 그렇게 교육받은 사람들이기 때문에 다른 회사에서 개발한 기술을 복제해서 쓰려고 하기 보다는 대가를 치르고 사용하는 것이 아닐까 싶다. 아깝다는 생각을 하는 것이 아니라 너무 당연하다고 생각하는 것이다.

2. 비싼 인건비
미국 엔지니어들 비싸다. 실력 있는 엔지니어는 10만불 (1억 2천만원) 정도는 최소한 요구한다. 고급기술을 가진 엔지니어는 훨씬 더 비싸다. 그리고 연봉이 다가 아니다. 의료보험이 비싸고 세금이 비싸기 때문에 고급 엔지니어를 고용하면 일년에 20만불 (2억 4천만원) 정도는 소비된다고 봐야 한다. 10명의 고급 엔지니어가 1년동안 일해야 한다면 200만불의 비용이 든다. 그렇게 계산하면 10명의 엔지니어가 3년을 노력해서 만든 제품은 최소한 600만불을 줘야 한다는 계산이 나온다. 그래서 밑바닥부터 새로 만드는 것보다 회사를 사서 거기서부터 시작하는 것이 말이 된다고 생각할 수 있는 거다.

3. 발전된 금융 시스템 – Venture capital, private equity, and investment banks
이건 어떻게 생각하면 간접적인 영향인데, 미국의 금융 시스템이 발전되어 있어서 기업 인수 합병이 활발하게 일어난다고 볼 수도 있다. 기술력 있는 회사에 투자한 venture capital들은 회사가 어느 정도 성장하면 그 회사를 인수할 회사를 연락하기 시작한다. 증시에 상장되는 것으로도 투자 자금을 회수할 수 있지만 그건 너무 오래 걸리는 일이다. 10년씩이나 기다리고 있을만큼 참을성 있는 venture capital들은 많지 않다. 빨리 회수해야 또 새로운 회사에 투자할 수 있다. Private equity들도 마찬가지이다. 이들의 주요 목적은 leverage를 통해 (즉, 은행 융자를 이용해서) 회사를 사서, 구조와 모양을 좋게 만든 다음에 되팔아서 이익을 남기는 것이다. 되팔기 위해서는 누군가가 회사를 사야 하는데, 주로 현금을 많이 가진 대기업들이 그 주체가 된다. 마지막으로, 미국에서 엄청나게 발달되어 있는 투자 은행들의 역할도 있다. 이들에게는 상장 (IPO)과 기업 매각이 아주 좋은 수익원이다. 기업 매각이 자꾸 일어나야 좋다. 그래서 투자은행가 (investment banker)의 큰 일 중의 하나가 기업 매각 및 매입을 부추기는 것이다. 한쪽에 가서는 매각할 때가 되었다고, 좋은 가격을 받을 수 있다고 하고 다른 쪽에 가서는 정말 좋은 가격에 나왔으니 다른 기업에서 선수치기 전에 매입해야 한다고 얘기한다. 양쪽에서 필요를 느껴 Acquisition 결정이 내려지면 그 사이에서 investment bank들은 상당한 수수료를 벌 수 있다.

Sitting on my desk are two piles. One is smaller than the other. They are both stacks of magazines that arrive in my mailbox on a weekly and monthly basis. The larger pile are all the magazines from the last three months that I haven’t even had a chance to flip through. With so much reading material available on the web, the amount of time I devote to print media has lessened to my subway ride and lunch breaks – and then it’s only if I’m not tired; on my iPod touch reading digital news or have my netbook out.

Amazon’s Kindle aimed to bring print media digitally in a device that had e-ink technology. It’s goal is to use e-ink to reproduce the matte-ness of paper, straining eyes less (backlit LCDs strain eyes over long periods of time). The first Kindle was an ugly geometric little device. The second gen Kindle brought curves to the device and the next evolution of the Kindle brings a bigger screen, but also bigger case. All of that is nice, but it is still a niche market. The Kindle isn’t cheap, originally $300 and now $259. Books and magazines are still cheaper. With Barnes and Nobles bringing some competition with their Nook e-reader, Amazon isn’t the only big player anymore. Barnes and Nobles is in the market to sell books, and if a big book seller starts selling e-readers, it means the threat of moving on to digital is there, and coming fast. Other companies such as Sony and iRiver have dabbled in the category, but with little success against Amazon. Barnes and Nobles’s Nook may actually give the Kindle a run for its money; priced at $259 (Amazon dropped Kindle to match the Nook’s).

But hardware isn’t enough. We need content. Google’s digitization of over 10 million books shouldn’t be taken lightly either. What are they planning? Their motto may be “do no evil” but how long will that last? Creating the Chrome OS & Android as open source OSes with staying power is just the first step I feel. The OSes could lead to true hardware development in the future. With 10 million books in digital format and more being scanned by the day, a quick domination to transform print media into digital could be on the backburner.

A good friend of mines, Bruce (say hi, he regularly comments here) and I almost made a bet that staked the future of the magazine industry. The question was how long would magazines and newspapers last for? Five, ten, or twenty years? With so many magazines and newspapers shutting down this year or moving to online only, the future of print looks bleak. The bet hasn’t been made, but it has gotten me to think about the longevity magazines. How long before they become completely non-existent? Who will transform the magazine industry and bring it into the digital age?

At the risk of sounding like a complete fanboy, many peg the only company that can truly transition the print industry to digital successfully may very well be Apple. Fortune Magazine just named CEO of Apple, Steve Jobs the CEO of the decade for transforming not just one, but four distinct industries in the last 10 years; telecom, music, computers, and movies. With so much experience, Jobs and Apple may just be the right candidate.

Rumors have been popping up on tech blogs for years now of the mysterious Apple “tablet.” Everybody is claiming to have information about it, the same hype that the iPhone came into the world with. Speculations range from a device sub $1000, but not under $500 with an 8-10″ touch screen that runs a mobile version of OS X, much like the iPhone and iPod touch but not as limited. A 10″ screen device would be right in the range of an e-reader…So a product in between an iPhone and a MacBook. This so called “tablet” could also fend off stiff competition from netbook sales. Aside from the hardware rumors, last month, we heard things about Apple approaching large media/publishing companies in Australia. This could all be rumor fodder, but if Jobs is shopping around with content providers, then their mysterious device could be big potential.

Hace meses, este blog nació con una clara vocación, enseñar alternativas a los servicios, marcas, productos, o incluso formas de vida, alternativos a lo que parece que está impuesto y que incluso hay quienes quizás creen que no existen otras. veamos unos ejemplos:

• Vídeo: habiendo alternativas tan buenas como Dailymotion, Metacafé y Vimeo, ¿quien quiere Youtube?
• Móviles: la reina es Nokia, aunque ultimamente se da el lujo de hacer móviles con materiales pésimos, y que crujen más que una bolsa de castañas. Tiene la fea costumbre de lanzar terminales con el firmware por testear, porque el 5800, su móvil estrella, ha tenido una actualización de urgencia porque estaba saliendo horrible. Antaño hizo móviles buenísimos, pero actualmente es un fabricante normaito que además va a remolque de los demás. Cualquier Sony Ericsson, Samsung, LG… le da mil vueltas en materiales, calidad, usabilidad y relación calidad-precio.
• Ordenadores: aparte de los Mac cuya calidad es evidente y notable, también existe la posibilidad de adquirir un pc (mal llamados así porque un Mac también es un pc, no un microondas) y que no lleve SO, pudiendo nosotros instalarle una distribución de Linux. Cualquier opción es buena, no solo existe windows, despertad ya. Tener pirateado Windows es ROBAR. Y ser un ignorante. No quieres pagar el SO, estupendo, ponte Linux.
• Reproductores de música: los iPod actualmente están equilibrados de precio respecto a los demás fabricantes, pero no por ello hay que hacer ascos de un Sony Walkman, porque en ocasiones tienen mejor calidad de sonido. Iriver, Samsung, hay marcas para parar un tren, escoged por necesidad y calidad, no por renombre.
• Ropa deportiva: Nike. ¿Acaso Adidas, Reebok, o la marca de Carrefour son tan malas? aquí una muestra más del borreguismo de la gente.
• Compañías de móvil: Movistar la ama y señora. Aunque en este caso las OMV están haciendo pupa a las 4 grades.
• Servicios web: Fotolog ha sido un gran peso pesado, pero está cayendo en picado, pese a los cambios que ha hecho, bastante tarde. Facebook poco a poco va ganándole la batalla en España a Tuenti, pues la gente se va dando cuenta de lo mala que es la red social española, falta de privacidad y un funcionamiento no acorde a lo que alardean sus creadores.

Okay the Zune HD has come out.  The public loves it, yes indeed. Yay, celebration iPod still rules the market we all know.  However, what people fail to realize is what truly separates the Zune brand away from Apple’s iPod, Creative’s Zen, Sony’s Walkman, or Sandisk’s Sansa players (or the iRiver, yes something like that exists).  The Zune brand is of course Microsoft’s baby, and next to Windows and Xbox, the Zune is one of Microsoft’s largest financial and resource-consuming endeavors.  Still with Zune controlling ~10% of the MP3 player market, people don’t understand what makes the Zune a Zune, and not just an “iPod knockoff.”  Well, let me try to explain

The most convincing aspect of the Zune brand (besides “The Zune Social”, players with song-sharing capabilities, built-in FM etc.) is the Zune Pass.  Most people who know Zune Pass even a little may have seen this commercial with The Aprentice’s Wes Moss.  The Zune Pass is essentially music rental, for people who don’t want a library of 4 billion songs, half of which they don’t listen to anymore.  There is a market for music purchase and a market for music rental, at least that’s what the Zune Pass is telling us.

Pretty much I find the Zune Pass, the deal of a lifetime.  Unlimited music downloads for a flat monthly rate. $14.99 a month, with 10 free song downloads, essentially dropping the monthly price to $4.99.  So you get free music as long as you keep paying (just like Netflix, or Blockbuster for movies) and free songs along the way (not Netflix or Blockbuster).  HEY! This sounds great right?!

But why isn’t the Zune Pass flying off the shelves and becoming the next music phenomenon.  Why do most people buy & download (if they buy at all) from iTunes?  Why, is the Zune Pass stagnant instead of giving a nice hill climb up the sales charts?  Well Mr. Michael Gartenber of Entelligence has some great ideas in his Engadget article.  Zune has not capitalized on the idea of music rentals at essentially $4.99 a month.  They don’t emphasize their hardware.  They don’t discuss the capabilities and the opportunities of having music rental and purchase living in harmony together.  Their advertisements miss the target and don’t capitalize on the unique value of the Zune brand.  Why? Well, we (consumers) don’t know.  Xbox hit the mark, the brand sells.  Why can’t Zune?

Is the Zune a dying brand?  Is the Zune HD the “saviour” of the brand that will bring the name to a broader, everyday consumer-base?  Is music rental possible now or has Microsoft jumped the gun on this one?

e-book 트렌드와 성장로드맵

해외에서는 다양한  e-book들이 많이 출시되었고 또 출시될것으로 기대되고 있지만 국내에서는 삼성의  ’파피루스’와 아이리버 ‘스토리’ 외에는  e-book 단말기를 보기 힘든 것이 사실이다 (사실 주위에 e-book을 쓰시는 분은 한 분도 못봤다)

아이리버 ‘스토리’의 경우 상당히 이슈화 되어 팔려나가고 있는 것으로 보이는데 실상 사용후기들을 보면 ‘실망했다’가 대부분인지라…(사실 초기물량이 전부 팔려나갔다는 사실도 믿기가 힘들정도로)  나 또한  e-book에 대한 욕망이 있기는 하지만 아직까진 마땅한 e-book을 찾지 못했다! 여행 갈때마다 무거운 책 낑낑대며 몇 권씩 가져가기 참 힘든데 말야.

언제쯤 국내 독자들을 위한 멋진 e-book이 나타나게 될까? wi-fi가 문제인가? 컨텐츠? 가격? UI? 하루빨리 나타나 내 지갑을 털어가주길 기대한다.

Muchas veces me puse a pensar si era necesario realmente un ebook portable como el Kindle, y la verdad que siempre termino pensando que NO. Obvio que esta respuesta viene asociada a que estos equipos en primera instancia son muy costosos. En el caso del Kindle además hay que aceptar las reglas de Amazon, las cuales no son del todo buenas por cierto, y si a eso le sumamos que no traen opciones interesantes como podría ser una cámara, conectividades de todo tipo y además permitirnos navegar por internet es que mi respuesta es no.

Todas las necesidades que un usuario puede tener, están cubiertas por una buena netbook y mucho mas. Obviamente lo bueno que tienen estos dispositivos es su autonomía. De cualquier modo les ingreso este vídeo del Iriver Story un buen rival del Kindle.

Cei de la iriver pregatesc un nou succesor pentru NV mini bike. Acest gadget este adresat celor care prefera  pedalatul pana la servici/scoala/etc in detrimentul masinii. Noul NV va avea un ecran de 3.5 inch, UI-ul a fost imbunatatit, iar touchscreen-ul raspunde si la atingere prin manusi. De asemenea, modul “exercise” inregistreaza distanta parcursa, viteza, timpul, precum si caloriile consumate. Pretul este de 156$.

Omann. iRiver zeigt (wieder einmal) Mut, diesmal sogar in mehrfacher Hinsicht. Einmal durch die Wahl des Sujets für den neuen DAP (Digital Audio Player, alternativ PMP, Personal Media Player), nämlich die ubiquitäre Hello Kitty (hier wenigstens auch mal in schwarz).

Und ausserdem mit einem Bruch der Digital-Audio-Player-Standards: Kein Display, kein flach-flutschiges, sonder kuschlig-eieriges Gehäuse, austauschbare “Mützen”. Und ziemlich klein: 45.2 x 17x 35.5 mm, Gewicht 16g.

Und das für haarsträubende 108 Euro 75 Cent. Da muss man Hello Kitty schon sehr mögen. Wirklich.

요즘 ‘다음달폰’ 아이폰을 놓고 옥신각신하는 것을 보면서 문득 5~6년전의 일이 떠올랐다. 대한민국이 내놓은 글로벌 기업 삼성전자, LG전자의 국내시장을 보호해주기 위해서 아이폰을 막아야하는가?

2003년말 레인콤은 화려하게 IPO를 성공시키며 언론의 총아가 되었다. ‘아이리버’와 양덕준사장은 벤처신화의 주인공으로 뻔질나게 언론을 탔고 ‘MP3플레이어종주국’ 등의 이야기가 언론을 장식했던 것으로 기억한다. 그때는 정말 한국MP3업체들이 세계를 정복할 기세였다. 적어도 우리 언론기사를 보면…

불과 1년도 지나지 않아 잔치는 끝났다. 애플 아이팟의 무서운 진격속에 아이리버는 타격을 입었고 주가는 곤두박질쳤다. MP3종주국이란 이야기도 쏙 들어갔다. (원래 해외에서는 아무도 인정하지 않는 종주국이었지만)

당시 나는 2000년부터 아이리버를 쓰다가 2003년부터 아이팟으로 갈아탔다. 내가 즐겨듣는 오디오북사이트인 Audible.com을 아이리버는 지원하지 않고 애플 아이팟이 지원했기 때문이다. 처음엔 불편했지만 쓰면 쓸 수록 아이팟과 아이튠즈가 편리하다는 것을 느끼는 상황이었다. 내 체감상으로는 아이팟이 좋은데 맹목적으로 아이리버를 띄우는 언론보도를 보면 뭔가 좀 위화감이 느껴졌다. 사실 아이리버가 세계 1위도 아닌 것을 억지로 ‘메모리형 MP3시장에서는 1위’라는 식으로 보도하거나 애플아이팟을 애써 폄하하는 기사들을 봤던 것 같다.  “뭔가 아닌 것 같은데~”

아니나 다를까. 몇년지나지않아 세계는 아이팟으로 뒤덮혔고 아이리버는 대부분의 미국매장에서 철수했다. 우후죽순 난립했던 국내 MP3플레이어 업체들도 대부분 몰락을 길을 걸은 것으로 알고 있다.

그때 기사를 찾아보다가 아래와 같은 양덕준사장의 인터뷰내용을 발견했다.

휴대전화가 MP3 기능을 통합, MP3 시장이 위축될 것이라는 일부의 전망에 대해  양 대표는 “그런 일은 절대 일어나지 않을 것”이라고 장담한다. .
휴대전화는 메모리 용량이 적은데다 다운로드 시간이 길고 비싸기 때문에 음악의 맛보기 역할을 할뿐, 수 백곡을 저장할 수 있고 음질이 훨씬 뛰어난 음악전용기기인 MP3를 대신할 수 없다는 확신이다. 카메라폰의 등장이 디지털 카메라의 수요를 줄이기 보다 오히려 폭발적으로 늘리고 있는 현상이 이를 증명하고 있다는 설명이다.

이 인터뷰가 나올 즈음에 스티브잡스는 “장기적으로 휴대폰이 MP3시장을 잠식할 것이고 그렇게 되면 iPod의 판매가 위축될 것”이라고 예측하고 “그렇다면 우리가 먼저 휴대폰시장을 공격해들어갈 수 밖에 없다”고 iPhone구상을 시작했다고 한다.

이런 미래를 내다보는 능력의 차이가 5년후에 어느 정도의 격차를 만들어냈는가를 생각하면 전율할 수밖에 없다. 물론 애플의 출중한 Product개발능력도 있지만.

삼성, LG가 지금 잘나간다고 절대 방심해서는 안된다. (그러지도 않겠지만) MS의 스티브발머가 불과 2년전에 IPHONE에 대해서 코웃음을 쳤다가 지금 당하고 있는 수모를 생각해보자. 2년전 아이폰이 나오자마자 써보고 국내 업계분들에게 흥분해서 이야기했을때도 대부분 비슷한 반응이었다. “휴대폰시장? 애플이라도 쉽지않아. 한번 해보라고 그러지.” 그러면 난 항상 이렇게 이야기했다. “직접 써보지 않으면 모릅니다.”

국내시장을 보호한다는 단견으로 5년전의 우를 범해서는 안될 것 같다. 언론도 단순한 애국주의에서 벗어나 냉정하게 아이폰과 관련된 문제들을 보도해줬으면 좋겠고 정부도 대승적 차원에서 결정을 내려주었으면 좋을 것 같다. 우리 국민들이 직접 아이폰을 써보고 자극을 줘야 삼성, LG도 그에 못지 않은 폰을 생산하는데 더욱 박차를 가할 것이다. 자유경쟁이 좋은 것 아닌가.

Hola.. Tengo un gran problema con mi reproductor de musica(mp3) Iriver T10..
Bueno resulta que me lo regalaron es de 1GB .. lo qe pasa es qe se me cayo al suelo de una minima distancia..
y al encenderlo todo lo qe tenia (musica imagenes etc) se me borro.. y la pantalla al prenderla no dice nada..

Bueno aL conectarlo al computador via usb Mi computador lo reconoce ya qe lo habia conectado antes, pero al intentar meterme en el pendrive.. dice "Este disco no tiene formato" bueno.. trate de darle formato con el programa del computador.. pero no pasa nada de nada.. Tambien baje el usb_format qe sale en esta pag pero dice qe es muy grande la memoria.

Actually works with Rhapsody music service with a little effort figuring out the picky problems transferring songs which is a Rhapsody problem, not the iriver Clix. Create playlists on Rhapsody not on the irvier Clix. Battery life is a little short. Maybe try draining battery completely the first time using it like with cell phones? Old players were Zen V plus and ipod Nano. Nano does not support Rhapsody rental tracks, Zen sometimes does, yet Clix does. Clix has best sound quality of the three players in my opinion. I would buy a Clix again, yet would get 8 GB model if available.

The best kept secret in Video/Audio Players
I just can’t believe how many reviews of this product jump over the obvious facts. And I mean professional reviews, not the ones here on Amazon. The screen is simply amazing to look at! Forget the technical details like it is an OLED screen and it only has thousands of colors, just look at it! Watch a video on it! It plays normal .avi files without any conversion. On top of that it works acceptably as a podcast player.

The only negative thing is the lack of knowledge about this product. Even the company seems clueless about it, it says in irs site that it requires Windows, but, by changing a setting, you can use it with Linux or Mac OS X without a problem. The software is for Windows, but the player works. It isn’t perfect, the interface could use some improvement and I have lost any hope of finding fonts, themes, and games for the SPINN, as no one seems to be paying attention to it. Which is a pity, a world where there are only iPods as Mp3 players is as sad as a world where there is only Windows as an OS.

If you do not like the iPod, give the SPINN a try.

Not quite ready for Prime Time
I’ve got the 8gb SPINN, and have had it long enough to write a long review on my blog (www.4dthinker.blogspot.com). I’ve also got an iPod Touch and a Samsung P2 for comparison. The SPINN’s firmware is still buggy. Using Bluetooth (limited to headphone pairing only) the sound drops out, slows down, or gets choppy after 10 minutes of use or if trying to use any other function (photo or text) on the SPINN. It’s as if bluetooth steals all the SPINN’s processor cycles. The interface is limited to one font, and that font is hard to see on many backgrounds. There is a Fonts folder, so hopefully there are more fonts available. While playing music the album art only shows up as a tiny image on the big screen. Very poor utilization of the screen. In photos there is no rotate options, and trying to zoom any photo gives me an error message.

The SPINN is firmware upgradeable, and hopefully there will be an upgrade soon. There are a few THEMES available, but none work well with the single font supplied.

Worthy premium rival to iPod Nano
I haven’t made long term use of this elegant little player, but I’m pleased so far. The design itself owes much to those created by Dieter Rams for Braun (and promoted on the iriver worldwide site). The AMOLED screen has very excellent black levels, but it can only display 262k colors.

The interface is simple to use, though I hardly bothered with the touch screen. You can avoid finger prints on the screen.

I wish that the entire case was magnesium alloy. Most of it is except for the plastic back. Also, the port cover is a little flimsy. This wouldn’t be a problem, but there is no alternate port to connect it for charging.

great for the money
I did a lot of research before purchasing this.. It has exactly what I wanted.. some memory AND a line in. I paid around $80 for it.. and you’d be hard pressed to find another 8 GB for the money. Can’t be used with napster, but there is more than 1 record store in town.
The controls take a bit of getting use to, but so did my ex-girlfriend.. and I kept her for 3 years. I had a H-10 before this and it lasted a rough and tumbled 8 years.
Bottom line.. for the music and storage, and sound (several eqs to choose from or make your own,.. a definite.. This also has a built in recorder for voice, FM radio, record off the radio, and 2 decent speakers.
You’ll pay a little more for white.. but iriver is a very good company that hasn’t made alot of noise. However you don’t necessarily have to make noise to be good.

Good for the price
iriver has been one of the leading brands when it comes to electronics. The E100 is not the exception. At its amazing price of $85,, the E100 offers what you are looking for in an Mp3 player. However there are a couple things I don’t like, it doesn’t support that many video formats and the conversion it’s not the best option. Another thing I don’t like is that it sometimes doesn’t respond to an obvious click, meaning that sometimes it won’t respond when you press a button. And the last thing is that it gets slow when you charge it with too much stuff. Overall it’s a good product.

I really like this player, now that I’ve updated the firmware and figured out that the MSC(UMS) connection type is what works for me.

Until I updated the firmware, I was having a devil of a time getting my PC to recognize the player. iRiver’s instruction manual is not very clear regarding how best to update the firmware. I eventually got it to go from within the iRiver Plus 3 media manager application that comes with the unit, on the mini-CD.

I have not been successful getting the player to recognize a SanDisk 4gb expansion card. Their tech support line suggested I might have better luck with a 2gb card, but I don’t have one of those. (I bought the 4gb card, since it’s advertised by iRiver as being compatible.) When I try to boot up the player with the 4gb card in place, all the menus and everything on the screen are presented in a mirror image view!?

Even with those issues, it works great for me as a basic player. The controls are a little odd, but once you get used to them, they work fine.
