The whole point in buying a Roomba is to save time. Any time you save is quickly lost by the amount of time spent cleaning the brushes or walking around the house to see where the Roomba stopped due to the battery running out without even making an attempt to dock with the charger. The Roomba doesn’t seem to follow any sort of pattern when cleaning. During every cycle, it will go over one area multiple times while completely ignoring other areas. I also find that the Roomba is just tall enough to get stuck under our sectional and the dresser in the bedroom. In fact, just today I had to free the trapped Roomba from the exact same spot three times.

The actual vacuuming that it does do is fairly ineffective on anything other than hair or loose surface dirt. For a good, deep vacuum you’ll still have to break out your upright.

I’m a robot-loving nerd but the Roomba just doesn’t do it for me. The idea is years ahead of the technology required to do the job effectively.Best Buy IRobot 532 Best Price, Buy Now! [Click Here!]

It may be useful to realize that many people who LOVE their Roomba — myself included — m

It may be useful to realize that many people who LOVE their Roomba — myself included — mean we actually have AFFECTION for our Roomba: less than a pet or child, but probably more than a houseplant. We all wanted a robot just like the Jetsons had, and now we have one. When it does something I seldom do; say, vaccuum under the guestroom bed, I practically laugh with delight. Plus it is great fun to introduce to the pets — in our case, two dogs and two perpetually shedding cats.

So there– I’ve admitted my unusual bonding with my Roomba.

Maybe I’ll get tired of pushing the button twice a day, but so far my floors are cleaner than ever. Before Roomba, I vacuumed once a week and swept the hardwood every couple of days. Now I run the Roomba twice a day — once when I get up in the morning, and then before I leave for work about 3 hours later, which is apparently enough time for it to clean, redock, charge, and be ready to go again when I walk out the door.

When this little bundle of joy first arrived, I tried, as an experiment, running it over and over in my (large) master bedroom to see how many runs it would continue to pick up dirt. Five runs later (on the same day), it was still picking up a considerable amount. Perhaps that means the Roomba does not clean as well as I hoped, or perhaps my bedroom is just too large for it to finish in one run, but the carpet, (which, again, I normally vacuumed once per week),looked cleaner than usual after the fifth run. And I have no doubt the Roomba cleaned under the bed better than I ever did.

Twice I’ve come home and had to go looking for it. This was its own adventure. Either it could not find the docking station, or perhaps my little Boston Terrier, who was under the dining room table with her ears back looking very guilty, knows what happened. In fact, one time the compartment that you empty the dirt from was in a separate place, and since I don’t see any other reviewers who have had that problem, I’m guessing Nina might know something about that. But it seems none the worse for wear, except for a couple of teeth marks. You will not regret this purchase.

Mainstream television and film have given robots a bad rep. Many people carry the stigma that robots

Mainstream television and film have given robots a bad rep. Many people carry the stigma that robots could turn against us, when really, they are performing tasks that are too dull, dirty and/or dangerous for humans to do on their own.

An interesting study was cited today on msnbc.com, where scientists at University of Washington warn consumers about the vulnerabilities our household robots may suffer and what kind of situations that might pose to their masters (think iRobot). I was contacted by the article’s author, Diane Mapes, to discuss the likelyhood of our household robots revolting against us. I tend to think that it’s highly doubtful you’d find yourself being vacuumed to death by your Roomba.

But what our conversation did entertain was the idea that one could take control and/or reprogram your vacuuming robot with a malicious content. It was quite an interesting and enjoyable conversation; there’s a spectrum of motives and possibilities. Take a closer look here.

So what do you think? Any Roomba or Spykee owners feeling a little exposed? Is it really something we should be concerned about? Or shall we continue opening up our families to robotic additions?

In the military, teamwork is essential in getting the job done. It is no surprise that soldiers have

In the military, teamwork is essential in getting the job done. It is no surprise that soldiers have a deep bond with one another and would do anything to make sure that their battle buddies remain safe. Lately, soldiers have become dependent on another type of companion, a robot. In the current wars, robots manufactured by iRobot Corporation have helped save the lives of many soldiers dealing with bombs and IEDs in the field. It is only natural that when the robots need fixing, the soldiers want them back as soon as possible. Sgt. Thomas who is one of the technicians working on robots that need repair states that when units bring them in they want their robots back as soon as possible.

From a personnel stand point, it is fascinating to think that robots are being integrated into units, essentially becoming a part of them. The song “By Your Side,” which the rockers Lansdowne wrote to commemorate these life saving robots gives us an idea on just how much these soldiers count on the presence of robots. You can find the song here: www.myspace.com/lansdowne

It is truly remarkable how powerful this technology is and all that it is doing to keep our men and women in the military safe. iRobot’s packbot weighs only a few pounds but it is making an enormous impact. From reading other posts in this blog, you will notice the military is using technology to keep soldiers safe, help with prevention of PTSD, and also to develop better communication with the civilian word through the use of social media. These types of stories don’t often make the headlines, but I believe they are very important to take note of.

As you can see, I am testing out some new recipes! We already tried the Sloppy Joe Bake (well, three of us did…two are still at football practice!) It was a HUGE hit with the two that have tried it. They are the pickiest two, so I am expecting rave reviews from the rest! I got the recipe from…you guessed it – Heavenly Homemakers! It was easy easy. I made a double batch of sloppy joe mix but with only one pound of ground turkey and spread it in a 13X9 pan. Then, I mixed up two boxes of Jiffy Cornbread mix and spread it over the top. Bake at 400 for 20 minutes. Now, it just about killed me to use a box mix of a grain product, knowing that I could totally make my own cornmeal with my grinder, but y’all, I didn’t buy popcorn at the grocery store. I wrote on my list “cornbread” and got in a hurry there at the end of my grocery shopping. Oh well. In the light of all eternity, I think we’ll be okay, right? Next time, I’ll do it.

The other new recipes came from Kraft Food and Family magazine. I hope they are okay. That magazine has not always received good recipe reviews from our gang. I am hoping for the best.

So far, the Irobot company has not read this blog yet and sent me a new Roomba to test out. Or maybe they have read it, and don’t want to help me in my dire, dirty floored situation. Either way, the floor is getting the best of me. I am wondering about one of those giant janitorial dry mop thingies. Maybe?

That’s about it for me. I am picturing my tub, filled with hot water and my Southern Living magazine waiting for me, so I’ll sign off now. I’ll let you know what Tommy and Taylor thought of the dinner offering!

Thanks for all of the sweet, encouraging comments you have written me! Although I don’t always respond right when I read them, I think about them for days and weeks after! Gracias!

Math and science scores amongst youth yet again reveal that American students are far behind in comp

Math and science scores amongst youth yet again reveal that American students are far behind in comparison to their foreign counter parts. Motivating students towards careers in those fields has become increasingly more difficult in a society that puts heavy emphasis on celebrity and glorifies flashy careers in entertainment and advertising. The military as well as the Olympics are having a similar challenge in engaging youth http://majastevanovich.wordpress.com/2009/10/19/olympics-military-share-a-challenge-engaging-youth/.

Big defense contractors iRobot and Raytheon have embarked on projects to potentially offer some solutions to the growing problem that is lack of interest for math and science; interestingly enough, both of their projects are in the entertainment space. By now, most have realized that the entertainment (music, television, movies, theme parks, professional sports, etc.) is a powerful medium when it comes to attracting youth.

iRobot has partnered with the rock artist Lansdowne to produce the above video. Exposing their robots to the younger demographic through a medium that youth relates to can generate some very favorable thinking about robots. In turn, that should hopefully foster more thinking about science and math.

On the other hand, Raytheon has partnered with Disney to design a ride where guests can customize their own level of thrill enabled through the massive robotic structure.

Understanding youth and what motivates them is coming one step closer to providing messaging that will influence them to think about entities that are not necessarily on top of their mind. Entertainment and using it in a compelling way is one gateway. What are other solutions?

[rm]

If that title seems a bit LSD-fueled, the subject matter warrants it. Here comes some Chemistry gone

If that title seems a bit LSD-fueled, the subject matter warrants it. Here comes some Chemistry gone wild!

First, have a look at this bizarre video. It stars a soft robot, or chemical robot – “ChemBot.” Even the experienced geeks at IEEE Spectrum are calling it “by far one of the coolest and weirdest robot prototypes we have ever seen.”

This particular prototype by iRobot and University of Chicago researchers was just unveiled, at the IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems this past week. (More on the conference here.) It was built in response to DARPA’s interest in chemical robots, a program run by Dr. Mitchell Zakin.

The DARPA “ChemBots” page describes the program as creating “a convergence between materials chemistry and robotics through the application of any one of a number of approaches, including gel-solid phase transitions, electro- and magneto-rheological materials, geometric transitions, and reversible chemical and/or particle association and dissociation.”

What’s the anticipated DoD mission use? In DARPA’s words, “With ChemBots, our warfighters can gain access to denied spaces and perform tasks safely, covertly, and efficiently.” Or, as CNet’s “Crave” gadget blog puts it, “the weird little blob inflates and deflates parts of its body, changing size and shape–and scaring the living daylights out of us. We don’t know exactly when ChemBot will join the Armed Forces, but we can only beg: please, oh please, keep it away from us.”

Does Mitch Zakin Dream of Electric Sheep?

With that kind of geeky appeal, this video has been gathering some Internet buzz over the weekend, appearing on several tech blogs. But the better story is the scientist behind the science. Several of us have been following Mitch Zakin’s work for a while, primarily because he is also the PM for the Programmable Matter Program — the “novel physics” of “a new functional form of matter, based on mesoscale particles, which can reversibly assemble into complex 3D objects upon external command.”

There is revolutionary promise for such composability in multiple fields, not just defense. Zakin described it several years ago in a speech as “a concept so simple, yet so revolutionary that it pushes even the DARPA envelope. A vision that has profound implications for how we think about chemistry and materials. A vision that could provide our warfighters with meaningful technological surprise.”

Zakin is a demonstrably brilliant scientist, of the sort you expect to find at DARPA. Indeed, in that same speech (“The Next Revolution in Materials“) which he gave at DARPA’s 25th Systems and Technology Symposium a couple of years ago, Dr. Zakin said: “I joined DARPA because it is unfettered by conventional wisdom.”

One area where he has been exploring beyond traditional boundaries is in developing “the infochemistry project,” which combines the powers of chemistry and information technology. In an exotic illustration, Dr. Zakin is directing a research program on “Chemical Communications,” which I’m not sure I fully understand but which sounds like some sort of holographic persistent Twitter:

The Chemical Communications Program is exploring innovative methods to develop self-powered chemical systems that can encode an input string of alphanumeric characters (i.e., a message), convert the message to a modulated optical signal, and transmit it repetitively to a receiver.

The ultimate goal of this program is to develop a small replicator device, with the form factor of a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) or cell phone that―

Permits the user to input an arbitrary 60-character alphanumeric message.

Translates the message into an appropriate set of modulated chemistries.

Embeds these chemistries into a disposable substrate (the transmitter).

Ejects the substrate for deployment.

The replicator device will enable warfighters to generate disposable optical transmitters in real time, each with a user-specified message. It will be compact, lightweight, and powered by batteries or solar cells. – DARPA website, Chemical Communications Program

With projects like these under his belt, Zakin is credited with reviving the chemistry discipline at DARPA, which had fallen away over the years. But now he’s scheduled to leave the agency in 2010. He is uncertain where he’s heading, but perhaps he can be persuaded to spend some time with like-minded souls in Microsoft Research; I suspect many there would find his infochemistry approach very appealing.

An interesting profile of Dr. Zakin in the journal Analytical Chemistry notes that “Academia is one option. Venture capitalism is another. Zakin has launched so many basic science research projects that have the potential of becoming commercial products that he says, ‘it’s almost a sin not to look at all that from the other side.’ ”

A morphing robot was demonstrated at the IROS conference this week. This orb has no rigid structure

A morphing robot was demonstrated at the IROS conference this week. This orb has no rigid structure but uses some type of “inflation” system for locomotion. This robot concept is offered up by the iRobot company as part of a DARPA initiative they’re working on. The “inflation” is really a substance in the skin that can be converted from a liquid-like state to a solid-like one. They call this “The Jamming Concept” and give a layman’s explanation in the video we’ve embedded after the break.

When moving, this white ball is a churning, turning, bulging mass of terror. The just-about-to-hatch pods from Alien, or perhaps something from Doom 3 come to mind. The hexapod from IROS that we covered yesterday was amazing, but this really creeps us out. What’s more, this is footage from the iRobot prototypes of a year ago. The newer stuff can do much more, like having several of these things glob together into one unit.

We’re glad that [DarwinSurvior] sent us the tip on this one, but now we’re not going to be able to sleep at night.
