So I’m wondering something, can stress really make you sick? I know it can weaken one’s ammune system, but can it affect iron levels, blood sugar, things like that? I’ve been feeling pretty run down the past few days. I’m light headed and just really tired a lot of the time. I hope it’s just because I’m finally down from that extreme anxiety high caused by all the apartment stress, so my body is kind of crashing before it returns back to normal.

I’m taking iron supplements again incase my iron is low. I really don’t think my sugar is high because I don’t have the symptoms of that…and yesterday I went a whole day without sugar….and today I just feel worse, so that’s a pretty good sign it’s not my sugar going all wonky again. I always seem to feel a lot better after I eat, so I’m thinking it’s not my blood pressure either. I’m leaning towards stress, iron, or low sugar…or iron and low sugar brought on by stress. Either way, I’m really looking forward to Thanksgiving now and just resting and eating normal food that’s not the cereal and sandwiches I’ve been living off of lately because it’s quick and cheap.

And if you are asking yourself why don’t I just go to the doctor, my answer is this:
1. I’m done with tests. I had so many while I was pregnant that I’m seriously just freakin done.
2. Doctor = money = more stress.

If this continues on into December, then I’ll think about going to the doctor, but until then, not so much.

In 19 minutes we are having our Thanksgiving lunch at work, which I’m uberexcited for. Real food which will make me feel better and some fun downtime chatting with coworkers. Yay!

I moved to Vancouver, BC last week to work for the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games as a Victory Ceremony Transport Manager. Although my job has nothing directly to do with my mission of “Making the World Healthier One Event at a Time,” it is going to be a great experience and I am going to find the connection somehow.

Saturday is a good case in point.

I started the day with my first visit to the Granville Island Public Market and my new slice of Heaven. This market is a dream come true for a person looking for fresh everything and/or with a restricted diet. Just as it boasts on its website, the market is a fascinating assortment of vendors showcasing the freshest and finest in gastronomic delights. “All fresh from the ocean, the oven or the field.”

After walking through the entire market once, I quickly determined which vendors I wanted to visit to get the ingredients needed for the quinoa salad I was making for a dinner party my Olympic colleagues and I were attending that night.

Duso’s Spice Shop had all the spices, nuts and grains in either self-serve bulk containers or nicely packaged single or double-serve resealable bags. I got sugar-free dried cranberries, organic raisins and walnut pieces that I needed along with raw almonds, cinnamon and pre-cooked soup flakes that only require boiling water to prepare. Sunlight Farms had the locally grown and some organic vegetables, fruit and herbs, including cilantro and parsley I needed.

Then, as with any shopping spree, I found something that I did not go to the market to get. There was a day table selling “the world’s most amazing breakfast cereal.” When I read the ingredients and found that it fit within my dietary restrictions, and that it requires no cooking, I, of course, had to try it. The woman mixed 2 Tbsp. of cereal with 4 Tbsp. of hemp milk and voila, I said “Holy Crap,” aptly, also the name of the cereal. Produced on the Sunshine Coast by Hapifoods, Holy Crap is a great-tasting, GMO free, all natural, ready-to-eat, raw vegan cereal that is also gluten free, lactose free, high in iron and has amazing dietary fiber and omega 3s. It’s loaded with antioxidants and one serving is a major source of calcium and protein.

Needless to say, my first visit to the market will definitely NOT be my last. I will definitely enjoy my walks to and through the market over the next few months.

These photos mightn’t be what comes to mind if one says Sweden and November, but they were taken a few days ago – during the suns regal visit that lasted one day – but what a day! The photos were taken in an old village with one of the oldest Iron works in Europe; Österbybruk. The mining, iron forging and smithy here goes back as long as the middle of the 15th century. During the 18th and 19th century it was the second biggest iron works in Sweden. A vast deal of this high quality iron was exported to the English industries in Sheffield. This kind of high quality iron could in times of high demand be almost as expensive as gold…

Who would’ve thought those Thanksgiving sweet potatoes can help you stay fit and healthy?

Sweet potatoes are packed with essential vitamins and minerals. It is an excellent source of vitamin A in the form of beta-carotene, a very good source of vitamin C and manganese and a good source of vitamin B6, copper, potassium and iron.

Sweet potatoes have antioxidant properties that may prevent conditions such as atherosclerosis, diabetic heart disease, and colon cancer. They contain anti-inflammatory properties that have been shown to reduce the severity of conditions such as asthma, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

And best of all, a half cup serving of sweet potatoes is only 80 calories. It cannot get any sweeter than that.

Eat sweet potatoes along with a heart healthy fat. The beta-carotene in sweet potatoes can only get converted to vitamin A in the presence of bio-salts, which are released when consuming fat. Finally, it is important to note that the carotene content of sweet potatoes actually increases as they are stored throughout the winter.

Maple and Walnuts Sweet Potatoes

4 small (3- to 4-oz) Sweet Potatoes, peeled and cubed into 1-inch pieces
1⁄2 cup Fat-Free Half-and-Half
2 Tbs Pure Maple Syrup
1⁄4 tsp Vanilla Extract
1⁄4 tsp Cinnamon
1/8 tsp Cloves
Salt and Pepper to taste

Topping
3 Tbs chopped pecans or walnuts
1⁄4 tsp ground Red Pepper
2 tsp melted Reduced-fat Margarine

Place potato cubes in a Dutch oven or similar pot and cover with water. Bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 10-12 minutes, until tender. Drain. In a mixing bowl, combine the half-and-half, maple syrup, vanilla, cinnamon, cloves, salt, and pepper. Add the sweet potatoes and mix with a beater set on medium speed. For slightly chunkier casserole, just mash with a potato masher. Spoon the potato mixture into a casserole dish. Combine all the topping ingredients. Sprinkle over the potato mixture. Cover with foil and freeze for up to 2 weeks. Defrost in the refrigerator overnight. Preheat the oven to 375° Bake. Cover and bake for 15 minutes. Uncover and continue to bake for about 20 to 25 minutes until the pecans or walnuts have browned and potatoes are hot.

Yield: 8 servings (serving size: 1⁄2 cup)

Hancock: Man of Iron – Neil Phillipson This book is a comprehensive book describing Lang Hanco

Hancock: Man of Iron – Neil Phillipson

This book is a comprehensive book describing Lang Hancock and his association with mining in Western Australia. It gives a good deal of information about mining and helps to understand Hancock’s personality. He was a third generation North Australian and his name was synonymous with the Pilbara region, so much so that it’s quite amazing his name is not found there more often. When I opened it I expected to get more details on Hancock himself, but was quite stunned to find very little information of a personal nature. His second wife, Hope, was mentioned a number of times as was his daughter, Gina Rinehart but the book finishes in 1972, 11 years before Hope’s death and therefore 13 years before his marriage to Rose Porteous, eliminating any probability of having the later events mentioned.

It is very well written and gives a great insight into the events of the period from 1952 to 1972 as well as giving a good background into Hancock as a child and Hancock’s family from when they first settled the area. Phillipson has endeavoured to present a balanced view, even disagreeing with Hancock about his first sighting of the iron ore as well as mentioning how Hancock would sometimes visit Sir Charles Court, the Minister for Industrial Development at his home to discuss small points quite amicably in stark contrast to his vicious attacks in the media.

Despite having so much detail on mining I quite enjoyed this book. It mostly explained the mining terms so I put the book down feeling I had a much greater understanding of the mining industry, the politics of the time and also how Hancock worked within or without the system. The Pilbara is a very hard country and everything there is so distant from every other place so you really need to be made of stern stuff to do as much as Hancock. The weather in that area is also incredibly hot with Marble Bar having the distinction of recording many days with temperatures in excess of 45 degrees Celsius (113 degrees Fahrenheit).

These amazing oven/stove combinations by Aga could heat up any kitchen, and to be honest get me heated up just looking at them. How ingenious is it is have a combo of energy as well as utilization of spaces in one appliance that can meet all of your needs in the most simplistic method available…containment?

With these stoves you can cook, keep warm, broil, bake, sear, and roast all at the same time on the same appliance without having to having to stager your meal so that something is cold before you can serve it. Now that we have satisfied one of my major checks on the list, function, lets look at the aesthetics of this “live in chef”. The slightly retro’d look is easy to incorporate in umpteen of different design feels. Clean and modern, eclectic, minimalistic, country, retro, traditional….it can basically be morphed into what ever feel you are trying to incorporate, and if you cannot visualize it, give me a call….it’s what I do! The lines are simple with a little bulk to them, giving the piece some great sturdiness and visual weight and the fact that it can come in a plethora of colors only makes it that much more radtastic.

The materials are basic and straightforward keeping the focus on what it should be….cooking awesome food. They are however made with durable cast iron covered by three coats of vitreous enamel so they are there to rock for year and years, and durability in a product is uber important when talking sustainability as well as the fact that a well made product can make your home stand out among others.

All in all, it gets an A+. Simplicity, function, aesthetics, and history of amazing performance puts this at the top of my “wish for someday when I have a house” list. Now just to work on the whole house thing…..

London (IANS) Tiny particles released by car brake pads can harm lung cells, according to new research.

Researchers found that heavy braking, as in an emergency stop, caused the most damage, but normal breaking and even nearness to a disengaged brake resulted in potentially dangerous cellular stress.

Mechanics Barbara Rothen-Rutishauser and Peter Gehr from the University of Bern and Michael Riediker from the Institute for Work and Health, Lausanne, worked with a team of researchers to study such effects.

”Brake wear contributes up to 20 per cent of total traffic emissions, but the health effects of brake particles remain largely unstudied. We’ve found that the metals in brake wear particles can damage junctions between cells by a mechanism involving oxidative stress (OS),” the authors said.

OS denotes the steady-state level of oxidative damage in a cell, tissue, or organ, caused by the reactive oxygen.

The teams’ analysis revealed that brake wear particles contain considerable amounts of iron, copper and organic carbon.

Exposure to these pollutants caused increased signs of oxidative stress and inflammation in the cells, and hard braking caused most exposure, said a Bern release.

Interestingly, some exposure still occurred even when the brakes were not being applied, presumably due to residual brake particles coming off the turning axle and the braking system.

These findings were published in the journal Particle and Fibre Toxicology

In diesem Fall jedoch aufs Kennwort speichern verzichten!

Funktion: Anwendung herauslösen

Verknüpfung am Desktop/im Startmenü, etc. erstellen

Anwendung starten

Fertig.

Welche Anwendungen sind prädestiniert für WebApps?

Facebook

WordPress

derstandard.at (in der express-Version, aktuell beta)

Radio Live-Streams: z.B. fm4.orf.at

vermutlich auch: GMail, Google Docs (nicht getestet)

Wikipedia

u.v.m.

In the September Estates blog post, You Say Tomato, I Say…, I discussed how to start tomato plants. Already, the tomatoes are sprouting and are big enough to leave the greenhouse flats. They are now in 4” pots and available for purchase.

Many people don’t realize, but the tomato is actually a fruit. They are low in fat and packed with fiber, Lycopene, Vitamin C, Vitamin A, Potassium, Iron, Calcium, and Folate.

When you plant the varieties of tomatoes I have chosen for our Florida climate (Bella Rosa, Floralina, Homestead, Florida Basket, Snow White, and Cherokee Purple) there are some techniques you should employ to increase your chance of success:

Plant in raised beds, mounds, containers, or buckets with holes drilled for drainage

Use the best good draining soil possible

Place in full sun

Water when the soil is dry

Incorporate organic fertilizers

Insert a tomato cage

Tomatoes are what you call “heavy feeders,” needing a balanced fertilizer throughout the growing season (September through April). The Estates uses worm castings, sea kelp, fish emulsion, bone meal, and Espoma brand fertilizer on ours. We spray a soap solution once a week to keep insects at bay, and hand- pick the caterpillars off the leaves. Tom’s Plant Soap is available in the Estates Museum Store. Other insecticides include neem oil, hot pepper spray, and pyrethroids. As always read the label directions. Beware of blossom end rot (caused by a calcium deficiency) and fungal diseases, such as early blight and light blight (soil borne fungi). Copper fungicide is labeled for tomatoes and can help control fungal diseases.

Cultural practices highly affect the outcome of tomatoes. Hand watering at the root zone or using drip irrigation in the morning hours can help prevent withering. Wetting the soil roots rather than the foliage decreases the chances of fungal diseases. Put dead leaves and rotting fruit in your regular garbage (you don’t want to risk contaminating your compost). High nitrogen fertilizer should be avoided as well.

You can purchase Estates sprouted tomato plants, fertilizers, insecticides, and fungicides at the Estates Garden Shoppe, open daily from 9AM-5PM, or at the Downtown Farmers Market on Thursdays from 7AM-2PM. We will keep you posted on the progress of our tomato plants.

Iron Maiden, released on April 14, 1980, is the debut album by heavy metal band Iron Maiden. It was released by EMI in the UK, reaching number 4 in the UK album charts. The album was released a few months later in the U.S. originally on Harvest/Capitol Records and subsequently Sanctuary Records/Columbia Records and included the song “Sanctuary”, which had been released in the UK only as a single, added to the track listing. In 1998, just like all other pre-X Factor albums, the album was re-released, and “Sanctuary” was added in all territories.

Of all the songs in this album, “Phantom of the Opera,” “Running Free,” “Sanctuary” and “Iron Maiden” remain on the set lists of nearly all of the band’s concert tours, with the latter used to introduce a giant representation of the band’s mascot Eddie from the back of the stage.

Four songs from the album: “Prowler”, “Remember Tomorrow”, “Running Free” and “Iron Maiden” were covered for the 2008 tribute album Maiden Heaven: A Tribute to Iron Maiden released by Kerrang! magazine.

Every song on this album except ‘Strange World’ has since been recorded by the Dickinson-fronted line-up of the band, either on live albums, on studio B-Sides, or both.

I thought it appropriate for my first post dedicated to iron to introduce and talk about my favorite

I thought it appropriate for my first post dedicated to iron to introduce and talk about my favorite piece of iron: the kettlebell. As you can see, the kettlebell appears to be pretty much an iron ball with a handle. But looks can be deceiving. What you may not realize (and quoting my brother Ben) is that despite its simple appearance, the ”kettlebell is the single greatest exercise apparatus every created. It works wonders for strength and endurance.” Quite a claim, to be sure, but over the last year I come to realize that Ben (and millions of other folks) are absolutely right. The kettlebell is indeed the greatest exercise apparatus ever created.

The origins of the kettlebell are steeped in mystery and legend. From what I’ve gathered from several sources is that the kettlebell had its beginnings as a humble counterweight used on large scales in 18th Century Russia. At some point, a couple of Russian peasants decided to start lifting and swinging this ball of iron by its handle and before you could say “vodka” a new method of strength training was born. Is this the true origins? I don’t know. More importantly, I don’t care because regardless of how it came to be, the fact is the kettlebell is here to stay.

Google the word “kettlebell” and you will be inundated with pictures, videos and articles about this iron wonder. What you’ll see first is that kettlebells come in a variety of sizes, with some variations of handle shape, bell shape, etc. You’ll also see that kettlebells are typically categorized by kilograms as opposed to pounds (but this is not always the case). I happen to refer to my ‘bells by both designations depending upon who I’m talking to and whether I’m trying real hard to impress them, i.e., saying you pressed a 70lb kettlebell sounds a lot tougher than pressing a 32 kilo ‘bell to someone who hasn’t got the foggiest idea what a kilogram is. Likewise, when you are talking to a fellow “girevik” (Russian for a kettlebell lifter), you need to speak the lingo and refer to your KBs by their weight in kilos (or by the name given to some of the heavier ‘bells). For example: “hey dude, I just finished doing snatches with the 24″ or “damn brother, you’re pressing the bulldog now? That’s righteous!” (bulldog is the name given to the 40 kilo/88lb KB). If you are a real diehard girevik, you refer to your KBs by the old Russian weight measurement poods where one pood equals approximately 16 kilos or 35lbs. Thus, a 2 pood ‘bell would be the 32 kilo or 70 pounder.

The most common sizes of kettlebells include the 12, 16, 24, and 32 kilo bells (26, 35, 53 and 70 pounds) with various other sizes mixed in such as the 20 and 28 kilo ones (44 and 62 pounds). For the mutant gireviks, there are even heavier ones like the bulldog and beast, weighing 40 and 48 kilos, respectively (88 and 106 pounds!). Hell, I’ve even seen a picture of a kettlebell weighing 80 kilograms (you can do the math on the poundage – I’m thinking roughly 175lbs). The long and short of all of this is that there is a kettlebell for everyone regardless of age, gender or fitness level. So no excuses please.

Exercises with the kettlebell are legion. Indeed, the sky is the limit when it comes to the sheer variety of exercises you can do with a ‘bell. This can cause (and has caused) exercise ADD with someone jumping from one program to the next and not giving any one exercise regimen a chance to work its magic. For this reason, you can’t go wrong by going over to www.dragondoor.com and picking up a copy of the book and DVD Enter the Kettlebell by Pavel Tsatsouline. Pavel’s ETK (that’s short for Enter the Kettlebell) is an invaluable resource for both the beginner and advanced girevik. The training philosophies and exercises discussed in ETK will meet the conditioning needs of most people and will open the door of advanced KB training to those folks who want to move onward and upward in their kettlebell training (can you say Return of the Kettlebell!). As for me, I’m a little over a year into working with KBs and ETK has made me stronger than I’ve ever been (and likely ever would be doing a metrosexual workout of butterfly presses, leg extensions and tricep kickbacks at my local gym). So for those of you still reading, get over to dragondoor.com, get some ‘bells and instruction and start swinging. In six months you’ll wish you’d discovered the kettlebell 20 years ago. I know I do.

Why can’t you just take a normal vitamin or supplement, you ask? Well, Real Food Organics claims that those typical pills tend to contain dangerous synthetic materials, and they came up with nutritional supplements derived from organic fruits and veggies.

In addition, the company has pledged to be green: the vitamins are packaged in a glass bottle within a biodegradable box, which is made from mineral powder. And its paper marketing materials are made from food by-products.

And groups like the Organic Consumers’ Association are touting organic vitamins, and even launched a campaign, NutriCon, to get the word out that Big Pharma is giving people unhealthy supplements.
It’s great to see an organic vitamin company, especially one that uses green packaging. But is this just another way to get us to buy something we don’t need? The Center for Disease Control says that, on average, we consume fewer than four servings of fruits and veggies a day, instead of the recommended six to ten.

But we’ve all heard that excess Vitamin C just gets flushed out of our body, and taking too much of certain vitamins, like Vitamin E or iron, can be bad for us. For vegetarians or vegans, like myself, a vitamin is an important part of our daily regimen. But what about people who are getting a decent amount of iron, B12, folate, and the like? Will they really benefit from a supplement? Or are they simply wasting their money on these products, organic or not?

Formulating iron-enriched fruit juices with milk may improve uptake of the mineral, suggests new research that offers a way of boosting iron intake for people at risk of deficiency.

Spanish researchers report that milk may increase iron uptake from iron-fortified fruit juices by up to four times, and exceeded uptakes observed when juices were formulated with casein proteins, according to findings published in the Food Chemistry.

“The addition of milk to fruit beverages exerted a positive effect on iron retention, transport and uptake versus fruit beverages, and this effect was greater than in the case of caseinophosphopeptides added to soluble fractions of fruit beverages,” wrote the researchers, led by Reyes Barbera from the University of Valencia.

“The addition of caseinophosphopeptides to soluble fractions f fruit beverages improved iron transport,” they added.

Iron deficiency remains the leading nutrient deficiency in both developed as well as developing countries. It affects around one in five women in the UK.

Fortifying foods with iron also poses several challenges for the food industry, most notably with regards to effects on colour, taste, and the shelf-life of the food.

However, the researchers stressed that additional studies are needed to confirm the results, especially in humans. It should also be clarified which caseinophosphopeptides favour iron bioavailability, they said.

“In addition, studies are required on the addition of functional ingredients to fruit beverages with the purpose of favouring iron bioavailability,” wrote Barbera and co-workers.

Study details

Using different fruit juice concentrates, including grape concentrate, orange concentrate, and apricot puree, the researchers prepared fruit juices enriched with iron sulphate at a level of 3 milligrams of 100 ml fruit beverage, with or without skimmed milk.

A comparison was made with juices formulated with caseinophosphopeptides, and measurements of iron retention, transport and uptake Caco- 2 cells.

The study showed that milk improved the retention, transport and uptake of iron in the fruit juices, even more than when CPPs were added to soluble fractions of fruit beverages.

“Iron supplementation increased iron retention, transport and uptake – the effect being more notable in samples with milk,” noted Barbera and co-workers.

I’m still fattening up Skinny Simon. Today’s favorite: Old Fashioned Oatmeal.

You can’t beat oatmeal for breakfast nutrition. Most oats for oatmeal arrives to you after it’s been harvested, cleaned, pressed between rollers and lightly steamed. How lightly steamed depends on whether you’ve gotten quick cooking or old fashioned. Quick cooking is a bit more processed. Honey nut cheerios, in contrast, contain oat flour so highly processed it has very little nutrition left. The vitamins are added back in artificially. Not a great food for bitty bodies. Sticking to foods as close to how God made them as we can stand is a great guideline for healthy living. (Raw for most things is a bit closer to heaven than I care to get.)

Oatmeal is goopy. There’s no getting around that. It’s porridge. Samantha won’t eat it. But it isn’t a bland porridge. Here is Skinny Simon’s oatmeal:

Ingredients:

2 cups milk. Select your favorite, and for a skinny kid, use the fattest version available. Simon is using rice milk right now, because it’s cheap and cow-free.

Maple syrup, generously drizzled. If you find a source for unfiltered maple syrup, jump on it. And then come tell me about it. It’s got way more nutrition in it than the filtered version.

1 handful of purple raisins. They’re high in iron. Isn’t that nifty. They add texture and flavor.

1 tablespoon of butter. You can skip this if you’re using whole milk. Rice milk, however, resembles skim. We use Earth Balance non-hydrogenated butter substitute. Coconut oil would be tasty.

1 egg, beaten. It’s just about invisible in the oatmeal. It adds protein and enough nutrients to grow a baby chick. I tried this with two eggs. Oatmeal custard. Not nice.

Cinnamon. Sprinkle liberally. Definitely more than a half tablespoon. I buy cinnamon in bulk.

1 cup oats. Quick cooking or old fashioned.

Method:

Mix everything except the oats together, in a small saucepan. Heat to a boil, and before it boils over, dump in the oats. If you’re using quick cooking oats, turn the heat off, and just stir for a minute. If you’re using old fashioned oats, let it boil for a minute more. You may have to turn the heat down to prevent boil over. It’ll make a mess of the stove and the pot if it goes over. Then just let it sit as it cools. It’ll be very soupy and hot as lava at first, but by the time you’ve changed a diaper, or switched over the laundry, it’ll be thicker and approaching cool enough to eat. This recipe makes up about three child-sized servings. Simon eats all three, starting at breakfast and going through snack. He eats it cold, even. It’s just that tasty.

You can change it up by using a scoop of strawberry preserves or pumpkin instead of raisins. Add a pinch of nutmeg if you do that, and see how that goes. Try it with a pinch of salt, too. Any dried or diced fruit will likely go over well. I’m particularly interested in the purple raisins because they’re a decent iron source. You can even add nuts, and ground flax seed.
