What is a Ukulele Shirt?
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Kainoa_Louis]Kainoa Louis

There are two garments that can be referred to as a ukulele shirt. The first would be a standard t-shirt emblazoned with some logo or another that denotes the wearer as a player or aficionado of the ukulele. The other would be a shirt that is appropriate for giving a performance of ukulele music in public. Fortunately, there are options for both. A ukulele player can find something funny and witty to wear on their off time as well as something more formal and appropriate to wear while giving a performance.

The ukulele shirt designs of the t-shirt type tend toward the funny or the absurd. This is part of the fun of these instruments. While they’re serious instruments in every regard, they also have a frivolous aspect to them that makes them quite a lot of fun. T-shirts that emulate rock t-shirts-having a dramatic rendering of a flaming ukulele, or similar designs-are an example of this. These t-shirts are a good way to connect with other fans of this instrument and, of course, if one is attending a ukulele convention, it’s almost de rigueur that one’s attire reflect their love of the instrument.

For more formal occasions, a ukulele shirt may not have anything particularly relevant to the instrument about it, but may have other aspects that make it appropriate. For instance, a formal ukulele performance is probably the only such performance where a Hawaiian shirt might be appropriate. For very formal performances, however, a ukulele player should not inadvertently belittle themselves with too-casual attire. A formal performance demands formal clothing and a serious ukulele player should consider themselves well-served by the same dress codes adhered to by any performer. Good quality shirts or even tuxedoes, in some cases, are appropriate.

Very adept ukulele players, as is the case with most musicians, tend to be very loyal to their favorite brand of instruments. Most ukulele manufactures also make a ukulele shirt that advertises their products. Wearing one of these is a great way to give a company that’s treated one well a little something in return. It’s quite common to see musicians, particularly rock musicians, wearing t-shirts that advertise high-end brands, thereby associating that musician with the level of the equipment advertised. One can achieve the same effect with their ukulele t-shirt if it happens to advertise one of the more expensive, professional brands.

A ukulele shirt can also just be a lot of fun. Most individuals enjoy advertising both their passions and their hobbies and, of course, a ukulele can become a bit of both, over time. If one happens to feel very strongly about a particular brand, a shirt that advertises that brand is a good way to start up conversations with others who may share those same feelings about that same brand or another. Clothing is one of the ways that people identify themselves and others as being part of a particular group and ukulele players can do the same for themselves.
Winterizing My Game I guess I’m what’s called a “fair weather” golfer. I sure don’t enjoy being on

Winterizing My Game

I guess I’m what’s called a “fair weather” golfer. I sure don’t enjoy being on the course during the Winter. There’s just not a whole lot to be said for playing golf on courses where everything is fighting is dead or dormant. Bleak just don’t do anything for me. Also, there’s the amount of clothing I have to wear. While tremendous advances have been made in fabrics, I still have to bundle up…and bundling up means not being able to rotate…and when I can’t rotate what I call a swing just doesn’t work. So, my winter game consists of going to the range to try and improve my short game and putting. I don’t have much of a problem getting off the tee, it’s just around the green that kills me and keeps my scores high.
So my golf winters are spent practicing so I can begin the Spring no worse than I was in the Fall. When I saw Dr. Bob Rotella talking about the Practice Like a Pro DVD set on an As Seen On TV spot, I saw a way that I might actually improve. I’ve read several of Dr. Bob’s books. He’s a sports psychologist renown for working with a lot of the pros on the PGA, LPGA and Nationwide tours. I think I enjoyed “Golf Is Not A Game of Perfect” most of all because it was a great analogy between life and golf. So, I spent the $70 and ordered the “Secrets of the Short Game” DVD set.

Practicing Like A Pro

The five Practice Like A Pro DVD’s came, and I went to work. It was pouring when they arrived, so the first disc I watched was the Pros on the practice round. It was very entertaining to see the interplay between the players, plus being able to pick up tips. Not that I’m good enough to put them to use right away, but at least I hadn’t heard them expressed quite that way before. Since I often get the “yips”, the Putting Feature Disc was next. Great stuff…especially the portion on how to practice before your round to get your head on straight while putting. I enjoyed Disc #2 on “scoring clubs”…knowing what to use when has always been a question, and knowing how to go about club selection is very helpful. That led me into Disc #1 that I’m going to school on. Watching and listening to some of the top Pros is showing me where I have swing faults and how to try to correct them.

Getting My Head on Straight

Then there’s Disc #4 with Dr. Bob. What a super informative session that is! Golf is truly a game that you have to get yourself under control if there’s to be any hope for conquering the golf course. Then, bringing your scores down requires developing that mental control. Dr. Rotella is a master of these mental self-control and self-esteem techniques, and he shares his advice in an understandable and straight-forward manner on this disc.
I think by the time Spring gets here, my golfing buddies will be reimbursing my cost of Practice Like A Pro many times over! Here’s to spring!

The most popular method of hair straightening is the ceramic flat iron. This is because they are easy and safe to use whilst giving a good result. They give a more gentle heat than other methods and on occasions can help repair damaged hair follicles.

We’ve all seen the FA Cup draw against ‘them down the road’, but it’s tomorrow’s game that has all the significance for Portsmouth’s fans’, and the club’s future..

Portsmouth striker John Utaka

The Fratton Park faithful entertain a West Ham United side buoyed on by new finances and new hope, stark contrast yet again to that of the hosts, whose financial plight has been an ongoing media topic for the past few months, and seemingly isn’t going to stop any time soon.

The Irons’ have had a second dawn in recent times, as David Gold and David Sullivan purchased 50% of the club’s shares, resulting in obtaining full control. The Londoners find themselves 16th in the Barclay’s Premier League table, five placesabove their counterparts in what some are calling a ‘Debt Derby’.

Reference to this, of course, is the fact that West Ham United are reportedly a whopping £170Million in debt, yet still have no form of transfer embargo or reprimanding from the Premier League on them, which certainly gets my back up… Perhaps Trevor Brooking’s had a say in it? I’m sure we’ll never find out.

Very much a ‘backs against the wall’ atmosphere inside Fortress Fratton of late, with little signs of being able to bring new faces into the club meaning that manager Avram Grant is forced to pick faces forgotten, including the rejuvenation of a certain Angelos Basinas in Saturday’s 2-1 win over Sunderland in the FA Cup fourth round.

The Greek international midfielder was used as a substitute, coming on and showing a performance of great promise, looking a player who wants to play for the club and help them push on, and not just play and hope their wages get in on time. *Cough, David James*.

A late call-up for another forgotten man, David Nugent, could happen also if the Premier League deadline exceeds that of Burnley’s kick-off time against Bolton Wanderers, meaning that the Everton-born striker could be set to rejoin his parent club, in the ambition of keeping them in the Premier League, giving back some of ‘that’ £6Million transfer fee from Preston North End two-and-a-half years ago.

Recent results for the two sides are also very good, having picked up a couple of wins and a couple of draws each, much better than their closest rivals in Wolverhampton Wanderers and Bolton Wanderers, adding significance to this already ever-important affair.

It’s definitely going to be a scorching atmosphere on and off the pitch, with further protests organised by Pompey fans’, as well as the match itself being a real six-pointed in the relegation battle. For Portsmouth anyway, a win is ever the more crucial, as although it can’t lift them off the foot of the league, a win plus another in the rearranged fixture against Birmingham City would put them on equal points with West Ham, outside of the relegation places.

Door #3 is found on the backside of a 2 story commercial building. The front side consists of storefronts on the first floor with offices on the second floor accessed by a common stairwell. Attention to detail while sizing up this door may just make the difference in how we would attack it. Hit our key size up points, take a guess on the exterior picture and then scroll down to see if you were right.

Key points to identify for door size up:

- Building Occupancy

- Construction Type (mainly the wall around door)

- Which way the door swings

- Type of door material

- Type of frame and jamb

- Locking devices and Bolt patterns (additional security devices)

Exterior of Door # 3

Interior of Door #3

The interior picture makes it clear why the offset bolts are mounted as seen. This homemade multi-lock has a single handle in the center that slides the flat throws into place on each side of the frame. The throws sit into the jamb and are then pinned behind the mount. This would prevent someone from reaching through a cut hole in the door and activating the handle. Another option found on this type of lock uses padlocks in place of pins.

The most common type of multi-lock in this area are the homemade ones as seen above. The commercially sold Fox Locks that activate in the same manner are uncommon in this part of the country. A big difference in these homemade multi-locks and the commercially sold ones is the access from the outside. Most multi-locks that are commercially made have the option of a key cylinder on the outside that allows you to activate the lock (which gives us the option of thru-the-lock), very rarely does a homemade multi-lock have this option.

Here is the breakdown of our size up:

1. The common door knob showing (key in the knob) tells us that we have very little resistence in our primary lock and that this door does not have panic hardware.

2. The offset carriage bolts should alert us of a possible multi-lock instead of a drop bar that is found so commonly on the backside of buildings. This is where the attention to detail comes into play because it would be very easy to assume a drop bar setup.

Ironing a Man’s Shirt

My Swedish grandmother taught me how to iron men’s shirts. Like Scandinavians of all social strata, she adored being at the ironing board. I don’t know how other people do it, but here is our system:

Flattening and folding the yoke (found under the collar at the back of shirt) at its bottom seam, iron it. You can iron-out the resultant crease later, when ironing the whole of the back.Iron the underside of the collar, then its topside, then iron a crease at the seam where it meets the shirt.

Iron the insides and outsides of the cuffs, before doing the two sleeves. Then you are ready to execute the easy parts: the two front sides and the back.

Hint: keep a spray bottle of water nearby to mist the shirt’s stubborn wrinkles, even if you have a steam iron. Spraying with water is generally safer than using the shot-of-steam feature on your iron. If do you use steam, empty the iron, refill it, and test-run for rusty water which can be difficult to remove once it is on the shirt. Do not use the highest temperature setting: crispy brown edges are for tortes, not chemises!

Besides the great feeling of accomplishment one gets finishing each shirt, it saves money which one may have spent having a cleaning outfit doing the work. There is dignity in ironing; don’t ever let anyone tell you otherwise.

UPDATE: The very best iron that I have ever owned is this one from Panasonic. I have owned irons from Germany that cost three times as much, and each one ruined my silk clothes by dripping on them. This one is totally reliable, and costs about $30.00 US. I choose the the Japanese over the Germans here, and if given the same choice in cars, I would do the same.

Washing Your Shirts

Your shirts will last much longer if they are washed by hand and hung to dry. Don’t use so much detergent that it takes a rinsing marathon to remove it. “A little dab’ll do ya”, as the old Brylcreem jingle said. Wet the grimy, sweaty and stained spots and rub them with a bar of Zote Soap (in the absence of Zote, a bar of Octagon will do). Soak them overnight in a small tub of water, then agitate and rinse by hand, preferably. Hang to dry. If you don’t want to get hanger-marks on the shoulders, just put wash-cloths under them, over the ends of your hanger. My husband has been treating his shirts this way for decades, and some of them have lasted for twenty years. The worst thing to do, even if you wash your shirts in cold water in the gentle cycle, is to dry them in a machine–doing so will quickly degrade your shirt’s fibers. You’d be surprised at how swiftly they dry naturally, and when they are just a wee bit damp, shirts are easy to iron. Sending your expensive or custom-made shirts to the cleaners may seem luxurious, but will sound an early death-knell for them. Getting up-close and personal with your shirts will ensure that they enjoy the good, long life that their maker intended.

The Halligan Bar In any profession, how well you know your tools directly reflects in the way you us

The Halligan Bar

In any profession, how well you know your tools directly reflects in the way you use them. A well made tool has obvious design and durability advantages in comparison to the cheaply made imitations. This is true with anything from channel locks to Halligan bars. A well made tool is typically easy to identify if you pay attention to the details. Sometimes the fire service will sacrifice quality for price. This seems insignificant at the time, until we call upon the tool to perform. Very rarely will a good mechanic settle for a cheap set of sockets, or a seasoned electrician use a set of discount lineman pliers. It is our responsibility as the grunts, the ones who will have the most hands on time with the tools to educate ourselves in the quality that they are made. If we are carrying sub standard forcible entry tools, the only way we can effect change is to be educated in their differences.

What we call the “Halligan Bar” has transformed through the years into many different variations. The original tool was made by Hugh Halligan in the 1940’s. This tool was an in-house invention and maybe the most widely used tool in the fire service. Hugh Halligan also invented the Halligan hook (also commonly known as the roof hook). The whole history of these tools can be an entire article in itself, but a major point to take from this is two of the most durable and useful tools still used today were developed by some creative firehouse ingenuity. Developed by problems that were identified on the fireground, taken back to the firehouse, and solved by a man who designed every specification for a reason. The problem with many of today’s different types of bars is they have varied from the specs of the original design in a negative way.

The tool that has stayed most true to the original specs and has actually improved on them is the Pro Bar. The Pro Bar has numerous advantages over its competition which are poor imitations of a Halligan. We will discuss some of the key points that make the Pro Bar superior as they relate with the following pictures.

The picture above shows you an overview of three types of “Halligans”. The Pro Bar (the upper most) is one piece drop forged steel, no parts to fail and at 30 inches is the perfect length. The other two are longer and are made by three pieces attached together. The details can be seen better in these close-ups.

PICTURE 1 – (The Pro Bar fork is on the right)

(PICTURE 1) This picture of the forks shows you the big differences between the fork end of the bar. You can see the one piece construction of the Pro Bar on the right and the two imitations on the left. As you can see, the three piece bars have been attached by a pin, and/or a weld. You can also see the tapered V shape of the space in between the forks of the Pro Bar. This angle of the fork gives you a good design to slide over hinges and take a solid bite to keep the bar in place.

PICTURE 2 – (Pro Bar fork is on the right)

(PICTURE 2) The side view of the forks shows one of the most critical differences in the bars, the difference that makes the Pro Bar the well designed tool. You can see the Pro Bar has a nice gradual curve of the forks to give you the leverage you need once the tool is set. The key advantage is how much thinner the forks are, this allows you to set the tool on those tight inward swinging doors/jambs. The other two bars have an obvious thickness to them that adds to the problem of what we are trying to defeat. Why would we want our tool to work against us? If the door we are trying to defeat is worth its weight, then we are going to want the thinnest possible fork to drive in between the door and the jamb. The well designed curve is what gives us the leverage not the thickness of the fork. If the fork is too thick we will not be able to set the tool deep enough to even apply the leverage.

PICTURE 3 – ( Pro Bar adze on the Left )

(PICTURE 3) The last picture shows you the adze end of the tool. The adze end could be the most useful part of the tool, especially if you are using one-man techniques. The Pro Bar adze is longer than the imitation bars and has a gradual curve to it. The curve gives us a high point on the adze that creates more leverage then its flat competitors. The length of the adze also gives you an added reach when you begin to pass it by the jamb of outward swinging doors.

The other part of the adze end of the tool is the pike. The pike is difficult to see in this picture but the differences are obvious if you have a chance to look at them in your own firehouse. The pike of the Pro Bar has a gradual curve to it, and is also much thinner then the imitation bars. The thickness of the other pikes is a disadvantage because of the resistance they cause when you need to drive them into material. The Pro Bars thin pike makes easy work of driving it through a metal door. This becomes very important if you are attempting to defeat carriage bolt heads with your irons. The less resistance the better and that is what the Pro Bar provides.

Nothing in this is new, like many things in the fire service, it is tried and true knowledge that has been passed down to us. It is important that this information is passed along so you can develop your own opinions, with that said this is an easy and obvious opinion to form for anyone that has been using Pro Bar Halligans.

Check out these old pictures from the original Halligan ads.

One of the beauties of today’s technology is that you can tell exactly how far you hit your shots.

One of the beauties of today’s technology is that you can tell exactly how far you hit your shots. I use the Sky Caddie SG5 because it has a button to push where my shot started, where my shot ended, and tells me the distance in between. I think mine may be broken though, because no matter how many times I measure my driving distance it always seems to read no more than 220 yards! But let’s not blame the technology…there is no doubt it is the swing that needs fixing!

I play on the Amateur Golf Tour every year and watch player after player, not nearly in the shape I am in, outdrive me. Granted, my drives are more or less perfectly straight and land in the fairway, while their drives are very often scattered all over the course, but I am still envious and want more distance! There is just a much higher probability for me to shoot More Pars if my approach shot is with a 7 iron or higher rather than a 3,4,5 or 6 iron.

I have probably watched every YouTube video known to man on how to get more distance. I am convinced that it is going to be a combination of better technique and physical fitness that is going to up my distance in 2010, despite being yet 1 year older!

All of you must know the scoring is all done with the short game, and even if the green is missed in regulation a good short game can get you your par. That too is on my Christmas list, but not today. Today I want a penetrating ball flight that pierces through the sky and lands 260 yards away. I am confident with the right practice and regimen this will be achieved in 2010.

See you on the 25th Santa!

I spoke about the great Playing Lessons with the Pros show I watched the other day featuring Colin

I spoke about the great Playing Lessons with the Pros show I watched the other day featuring Colin Montgomerie on the Golf Channel. There was another segment I remember that struck me: he was talking about people saying he was a good iron player. Why did they say it? Because he hit lots of greens in regulation.

Colin went on to point out that it wasn’t necessarily that he was better with his irons than other players. The key was that his drives more often than not hit the fairway. And it is a lot easier to be a “good iron player” if you are hitting from the fairway than if you are hitting from the rough.

This was a wake-up call for me to really get more serious about hitting the fairway; or, if on a Par 5 and taking a 2nd shot, to make extra sure that the ball lands in the fairway to set up my approach.

As a relatively high handicapper, it is easier said than done to hit more fairways. But as we will see here on MorePars, we need to have a clear eye on our objectives and set goals in order to achieve them faster. Let’s all focus more often on hitting fairways and when we miss, to get back on them with our next shot. This will statistically lead us over time to scoring More Pars.

The second door we have is an interesting one. It is very obvious upon size up that we have multiple

The second door we have is an interesting one. It is very obvious upon size up that we have multiple security features to this door (which is not always this obvious). Take a look and a guess…..then scroll down and see if you were in the ballpark.

Remember the key points to look at sizing up before you plan your attack.

Building Occupancy (which we will give you)

Construction type

Which way it swings

Type of door/material

Type of jamb/frame material

Locking devices and bolt patterns (primary, secondary and so on)

This door was found on the backside of a L-shaped 2 story wood frame commercial. The building has multiple storefronts, and many business on the second floor also. This specific unit was a large rental center and the tenant had multiple previous break ins.

And here is the first step of the interior.

Just as you begin to think you’re getting a handle on the door you find this next.

What was the outside telling us??

Just walking up to this door we can see pretty obvious signs of heavy fortification. The numbers above go along with the following descriptions:

We have a typical door handle and rim cylinder combination. This type of hardware showing, along with knowing the occupancy, will tell you this has panic hardware on the backside. This lock setup is not very substantial alone, and may be all that is holding this door shut if it is daytime hours.

Next we have two sets of carriage bolts mounted right above the panic hardware setup. These bolts should tip us off to some kind of drop bar mounts installed on the inside.

Third we have two sets of 4 pattern carriage bolts. One set up high and one down low. These more than likely tell us that we have either slide bolts into the jamb, or padlock hasps installed. The location of the bolts near the edge of the door and the pattern of the four bolts are what is unique to these types of setups.

The fourth characteristic basically tells us they have fabricated something inside that requires heavy-duty anchors through the entire exterior wall. Untill you see the inside, you could be thinking a number of things.

For the first time in Mizuno MP Series, the prestigious irons manufacturer introduced a one-of-a-kin

For the first time in Mizuno MP Series, the prestigious irons manufacturer introduced a one-of-a-kind product that is basically designed to merge the playability of player irons with the forgiveness of a multi material construction modern iron. With continuous innovation in mind, Mizuno MP-58 irons were released in the market in 2008 intended to blow the minds of meticulous golfers.

The merging

We all marveled at Mizuno for having been a success ever since they’ve started presenting their products in the golf market. Many enthusiasts hailed their efficiency. They claimed that their irons proved a varied range, which gives the players something to look forward to in every collection. Some critics even say “there’s irons and Mizuno irons”, an evident hierarchy represented.

But perhaps what made golfers love this brand is because of Mizuno’s ability to jive with their game style. The irons have indeed been proven superb in any terrain regardless of anything.

Mizuno MP-58 is characterized by a titanium insert into the outer muscle pad of the club head, which gives this iron a uniquely solid feel at impact and increasing the perimeter weighting. This makes the iron more consistent on off center hits. The 11 gram titanium plate is positioned 2.9mm from the face.

This iron has a thinner sole and top line than the MP-57 model. It definitely looks different from its predecessor due to its lower cavity badge. This new feature enhances forgiveness for the player and keeping the centre of gravity close to the clubface. The beveled sole and flattened mid sole improve ball contact.

The Mizuno MP-58 irons is said to provide a customized tool for golfers who want a forged feel and like to shape their approach shots.

However, remember to keep maintenance to all of your clubs and irons. After a day’s game, make sure to wipe off the dirt and polish them to keep a longer life span.
