German is like English, when we use a verb in a sentence, you must use the pronoun with it (i.e. I, you, he, she…).  Below is a list of the personal pronouns, this is the order that we learn verb endings in too:

When you use a verb you have to change the ending of the verb depending on which pronoun you use (i.e. if you want to say ‘he eats’ or ‘you eat’).  To do this you must take the ‘-en’ off the infinitve of the verb to get the ’stem’.  (e.g. fahren (to travel) – the stem would be ‘fahr’.)  Once you have the stem you must add the correct ending.  Below is a list of the verb endings for each pronoun:

The problem is that not all verbs follow this pattern in German, a few verbs are ‘irregular verbs’ – that means that they don’t follow the normal pattern above.  The good thing is that most ‘irregular’ verbs are only irregular in the ‘du’ and ‘er/sie/es’ forms.  Below are examples of three ‘irregular verbs’.  I have only included the ‘ich’, ‘du’ and ‘er/sie/es’ forms of the verbs as the rest follow the normal pattern.

Unfortunately there is no rule with irregular verbs – you simply have to memorise them!!

Os verbos irregulares em inglês são todos aqueles que não seguem a regra geral de formação do Passado e do Particípio Passado.

A formação do “Past” (Passado) e do “Past Participle” (Particípio Passado), de acordo com a regra geral, se dá através do sufixo - ed. Exemplo: o verbo “to walk” (caminhar) é regular e seu passado é “walked” e seu particípio passado também é “walked” = I walk (Eu caminho); I walked (Eu caminhei); I have walked (Eu tenho caminhado). Portanto, todo verbo que não seguir este padrão, será classificado de irregular.

É bom lembrar também que, com relação à conjugação, nada diferem dos verbos regulares. A única mudança que ocorre é na terceira pessoa do singular no presente afirmativo. Lembramos ainda que o único verbo que foge a esta regra é o “to be” (ser e estar).

Estava pesquisando no google algo que não tinha nada haver com Inglês e sem querer me deparei com este assunto super interessante abaixo, então resolvi postar no blog. So, here you are!

Para quem não sabe a palavra ‘fulano’ é usada para designar uma pessoa que não queremos mencionar o nome ou que não sabemos o nome dela.

Tinha um fulano aí te procurando.

O namorado da fulana estava aqui agora a pouco.

Quem é este fulano?

Em inglês quando não desejamos mencionar o nome da pessoa ou simplesmente não sabemos podemos fazer uso de duas expressões. Uma é ’so-and-so’ e a outra é ‘what’s his name’ ou ‘what’s her name’, todas usadas como equivalente ao nosso ‘fulano’ ou ‘fulano de tal’.

There was a so-and-so loooking for you here. [Tinha um fulano aí te procurando]

So-and-so’s boyfriend was here a couple of minutes ago. [O namorada da fulana estava aqui agora a pouco]

Who is this so-and-so? [Quem é este fulano?]

Alguns exemplos com as outras expressões são:

He said he was with what’s her name. [Ele disse que estava com uma fulana aí]

She’s coming to the party with what’s his name. [Ela vai vir à festa com um fulano de tal]

O legal em português é que geralmente colocamos a família toda junta. Ou seja, dizemos “fulano, cicrano e beltrano”. Será que em inglês há algo assim também? Claro que tem! Quando todo mundo resolve aparecer na sentença eles dizem “every Tom, Dick, and Harry“. Lembrando que estas expressões são usadas quando queremos nos referir a todo mundo. Algo como ‘toda a torcida do Flamengo’. Exemplo,

I said it was a secret, but she told it to every Tom, Dick and Harry. [Eu disse que era segredo mas ela contou pra toda a torcida do Flamengo]

He always agrees with every Tom, Dick and Harry. [Ele sempre concorda com fulano, cicrano e beltrano].

Music legend Michael Jackson has died at the age of 50, after suffering a cardiac arrest at his home in Beverly Hills. Jackson, who had a history of health problems, had been due to stage a series of comeback concerts in the UK in July.

Michael Jackson’s body was airlifted from hospital to the coroner’s office in downtown Los Angeles. TV stations here carried live coverage of the helicopter’s journey. An autopsy will be carried out later today to establish the precise cause of his death.

Paramedics had been called to the Beverly Hills mansion Michael Jackson had been renting whilst he prepared for a series of fifty sold-out shows in London next month. The singer’s brother Jermain told a news conference that after they failed to resuscitate him, Jackson was transferred to a nearby hospital where a team of doctors worked for more than an hour in a vain attempt to revive him.

Only a few hours earlier Michael Jackson had been rehearsing at a local sports stadium, but concerns about his fitness for the concert tour had already begun to circulate, amid reports that he was looking frail. Hundreds of fans have maintained a vigil outside the hospital to which he was taken, some to mourn his passing, others to celebrate his music.

For the all the controversy that surrounded the latter part of his career several commentators here have likened his musical legacy to that of Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby and Elvis Presley.

I’ll start with ‘glide’

If gliding made a sound, I’m willing to bet my shiniest five yen coin that it would go onomatopoeia on our asses.

Glide just glides. It glides so well it almost slides, but has a neat little ‘gl’ up its front stop it from doing that.

Spanish Verb Conjugations are NOT, as you may have thought, something to be afraid of when learning Spanish. In fact they will actually make learning Spanish a whole lot easier as they will help to clearly define who or what performs an action and when that action takes place, unlike in English where there can be a great deal of ambiguity.

Spanish Verb Conjugations, where should we start?

Well, the first thing we should not do is presume that you know what a conjugation is, irrespective whether they are Spanish verb conjugations or not, so here is a brief explanation or, definition if you prefer.

A conjugation, where linguistics is concerned, is the formation of a specific form of a verb, normally comprising of the stem of a verb and one of various different endings that, when attached to the stem, will indicate who or what is, was or will be performing a task; and it also indicates when, as you can see, the action takes place, more often referred to as the tense.

Another aspect of Spanish verbs you need to be aware of is that they are not preceded by the word ‘to’, unlike English verbs ,which is what usually denotes that a word is a verb in English.

In Spanish the ‘to’ part of the verb is at the end of the verb stem: In the example that follows, the Spanish verb ‘hablar’, which is a regular Spanish verb meaning to speak, is used. The stem of ‘hablar’ is ‘habl-’ and the ending, in this case ‘-ar’ is the equivalent of the English ‘to’.

With Spanish verb conjugations it is far easier to understand who is performing an action than in English; for example if we take the verb ‘hablar’ and compare the Spanish verb conjugations to its English equivalent, you will see that apart from the third person singular there are no changes at all to the English verb stem, making it practically impossible to tell who is performing the task without the use of a pronoun.

With Spanish verb conjugations, however, a specific ending is attached to the stem of the verb to indicate who or what is performing the task.

Yo hablo - I speak

Tú hablas – You speak

Él/ Ella/ Usted habla – He/ She/ You speaks

Nosotros hablamos – We speak

Vosotros habláis – You speak

Ellos/ Ellas/ Ustedes hablan – They/You speak

In Latin and South American Spanish speaking countries it is quite common for the pronouns to still be used all the time, but speakers of Castilian Spanish no longer uses pronouns and they are dropped completely other than to avoid ambiguity or if being polite.

And that is probably the most basic explanation of Spanish verb conjugations I can give, there are of course regular ‘-ir’ and ‘-er’ verbs that have different verb endings and also irregular verbs that unfortunately must be learned individually as they do not follow regular conjugational patterns, but in all Spanish verb conjugations should not be feared but embraced as they will actually make learning and understanding spoken Spanish much easier.

Doug wanted me to sync his iPod yesterday so he could get some of the Monty Python sketches on there that I’ve been ripping from old records and downloading from iTunes. (At least, the Monty Python sketches that his mother is OK with him listening to.)

“OK, all synced,” I said as I handed it to him. It occurred to me that Doug and probably thousands of other kids had no idea that sync was a clipped form of synchronize, generalized from its meaning of coordinating actions to occur simultaneously to a meaning of making sure two items carry the same information. As far as he knew, the verb might just be sink, with past tense sank and past participle sunk. He’s only recently gotten much use out of the iPod he got a year or so ago, so I haven’t had the opportunity to hear how he forms the past forms, but I was curious enough that I did some Googling when I got back to the computer, and sure enough…

Some speakers out there aren’t sure what the past tense should be:

• Against my will (my friend didn’t like MY music..grr) my friend sunk (?) my iPod with her iTunes.
• So whenever I synced (sunk?) my iPod I’d have all my random musical shittings to listen to without really having to think about it much.

Others know that an irregular past tense for sync is a bit iffy, and explain it or highlight it as unusual:

• But the program wouldn’t transfer every song, so I was waiting until I could figure out how to get the rest of my songs on my new computer before I sunc (past tense of sync) the ipod.
• Another entry in the Buck Family Unabridged Dictionary of the English Language: sanc (verb, past tense), “to sync”, as in, “You sanc my iPod!”

Still others, as I suspected, use the irregular forms apparently with no idea that anything is amiss:

• last night when i sank my ipod i got the message to update the ipod software
• I did correct the album artist fields and deleted those comments and re-sunk my iPod and still those double albums appear.
• I made my own account and transferred all of my songs on it, it worked great but when i sunk my ipod it deleted all of my songs that i previously bought.
• Mel is gonna get Rose cuz she sunk my IPOD!
• i haven’t sunk my ipod for a long time for this very reason.

This innovation seems to be pretty new, since I only get a handful of pages, and most of the hits are from 2008 and 2009. However, it probably predates the iPod, since the iPod is not the first device to require syncing. The earliest hit I got was from June 2007, when I did a search for “past tense of sync” without including the word iPod, and found this mini-rant on a thread in a grammar forum:

Incredibly, people in my office use “sunk” as the past-tense of “synch” or “sync”. All day long, they tell each other (and our software users) that they “sunk” the data. “The data is sunk!”
Can they not hear how ridiculous that sounds? Because these of course are all computer scientists, engineers and database analysts, the question of how to offer an alternative or delicately point out that it’s bad P.R. to go around saying the system is “sunk” is a good one.

This irregularization of sync is a good example of folk etymology, or (because it hasn’t become fully established yet) an eggcorn: People misunderstand the verb sync, but you don’t realize it until they use it in the past tense. Of those who use sank and sunk as past tenses, probably at least some have created some abstract meaning for sink that makes sense, like thinking of the songs as being sunk into, embedded, in their iPods. I don’t see it in the Eggcorn Database yet; the closest is lip-sing for lip-sync(h). Remind me to submit it later today.

Of course, when I said that kids probably had sank as the past tense of sync and sunk as the past participle, I was being hopelessly unrealistic. What they probably have (and the examples above bear witness to this) is sank for both forms , or sunk for both forms , or sank and sunk in free variation. What I’d love to hear is a parent correcting their child: “You ’sunk’ your iPod? I think you mean you sank your iPod. Today I sync it, yesterday I sank it, I have just now sunk it.” Actually, it would drive me nuts to hear that, but it’s fun to imagine it.
