My son came home from PreK with a paper pilgrim hat the other day. After admiring his handiwork, my mind went to the obvious place.

Pilgrim names.

Spokane’s Spokesman-Review reminds us that back in 1620, first baby born to the Pilgrims in New England was named Peregrine. Big brother was called Resolved.

There were, of course, plenty of men called John and William and women named Mary and Anne.

The more interesting masculine names worn by Plymouth Rock arrivals included:

Isaac

Bartholomew

Love

Wrestling

Moses

Desire

Degory (though he may have been Gregory. Or Digory – we don’t know much about him.)

Giles (brother to Constance, Damaris and Oceanus)

Oceanus (born en route to Plymouth – see above)

Solomon

Jasper

Myles (Standish, of course)

There were fewer women, but a few stand-out names:

Remember

Humility

Constance (sister to Damaris, Oceanus and Giles)

Damaris (see above)

Priscilla

I’ve read estimates that only around 25% of the Purtians ever had names that would’ve seemed unusual in their day. If that’s true, then 75% answered to ordinary appellations for their time, like James and Elizabeth.

It also seems surprisingly consistent with modern day experience. Around three-quarters of all kids born in the US receive a Top 1000 name. In the nineteenth century, names ranking in the 900s were only given to a few kids; today, names at those same rankings are worn by a few hundred. Really unusual names have never been terribly common – but neither was there a moment where every boy was Robert and every girl was Jane.

Nathaniel Hawthorne’s 1850 novel of scandal amongst the Puritans, The Scarlet Letter, introduced a few unusual names not worn by the original settlers, including Hester and Pearl. Most of the other names were unremarkable – Arthur and Roger aren’t popular today, but they don’t make you think of the novel, either.

Even in fiction, not every Puritan was called Flee-Fornication.

Happy Thanksgiving!

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Press Release)–President Barack Obama on Wednesday sent the following message to Muslims around the world:

“Michelle and I would like to send our best wishes to all those performing Hajj this year, and to Muslims in America and around the world who are celebrating Eid-ul-Adha. The rituals of Hajj and Eid-ul-Adha both serve as reminders of the shared Abrahamic roots of three of the world’s major religions.

“During Hajj, the world’s largest and most diverse gathering, three million Muslims from all walks of life – including thousands of American Muslims – will stand in prayer on Mount Arafat. The following day, Muslims around the world will celebrate Eid-ul-Adha and distribute food to the less fortunate to commemorate Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son out of obedience to God.

“This year, I am pleased that the Department of Health and Human Services has partnered with the Saudi Health Ministry to prevent and limit the spread of H1N1 during Hajj. Cooperating on combating H1N1 is one of the ways we are implementing my administration’s commitment to partnership in areas of mutual interest.

“On behalf of the American people, we would like to extend our greetings during this Hajj season – Eid Mubarak.”

Ike, you are beginning to confirm my suspicions that you are going to keep us in the doctor’s office. (although Clara isn’t helping either–see post below). Nine days ago you fell at day care and broke your finger. The first day it was so terribly swollen and bruised that i wanted to wait and see how it looked after the swelling went down…i wasn’t really convinced it was broken at the time. By day five after you hurt it, it was still very swollen and very black & blue so i decided we’d better get some xrays. And you broke your “pointer” finger along the base, slightly into the growth plate. We got into the orthopedic doc the next morning and you started wearing your splint that day. You have been so tough through it all. You protect the finger with much caution, but you still play hard as always. You have to wear the splint for two weeks until it is healed and then we have to get xrays to make sure it healed properly. You seem to like the splint now that you are used to it. You hold your hand out for me so i can wrap it securely after taking it off for baths. Sometimes you hold up your hand and say “ouch-ers!”

Besides your broken finger, you scared your dad and i half to death at the playground one day when you decided you would jump from the platform of the playset which was about 20 feet off the ground. You called out to us and when we looked up you lifted on leg and acted like you were about to jump. You put your foot back down and started working to reposition yourself to jump. I had already taken off up the stairs and toward you so that by the time you went to really jump i grabbed you as you raised your leg the second time. daddy was also positioned below you in hopes that he would catch you in case you jumped before i got to you. through the whole thing we were yelling to you, “don’t jump ike.” you laughed and wiggled around in my arms as i carried you back down to the ground. you can be such a little stinker!

anyhow, i finally got to talk to isaac yesterday it was a happy conversation, as always. i always look forward to those random calls once in a while. i realize that i’ve learnt to let go more, not to hold on too tightly to this friendship that i treasure so much. i guess the recent spate of events in both of our lives had taught me so. and surprisingly, i feel that i can enjoy our friendship so much more than i used to! as best friends, i just hope that he will always be so happy and driven and passionate about God and life! and it infects me, really!

i also finally got to catch up with harold khooooo on facebook. it’s always a happy thing to talk to him. our friendship has always been a very unique one; in all my other friendships, there’s always a slightly down side, like quarrels, misunderstandings, or something else. but harold is such a happy person from inside, we’ve always been happy happy friends. when we’re together, i become the “wonder” in me. i hope God will bless him with someone very special soon.

i hope LZ will not be angry with me for too long!

i feel like whatever i’m going through with JW mirrors what i went through with isaac some time ago. i shld learn to chill. haha.

What is a Jew? The oldest document known to Man, written on that subject, is still with us today. It is called the Old Testament of the Bible! It explains the only criteria for being a Jew.

The Bible states, a Jew is a human being that believes in the One God, the same God that Abraham believed; and that person, if he is a male of the species, will have to have the foreskin of his penis circumcised on the eighth day after he is born.

Whether he is a foreigner or born of Jewish parents makes no difference in the covenant God made with Abraham. He must use judgment and justice as a life style and teach his family likewise. The last part of the criteria is to teach his family judgment and justice. Let me put them into a list for easy reference:

1. Believe in one God who created all things.
2. All male children must be circumcised on the eighth day after birth.
3. Husbands must teach their family judgment and justice.
4. Foreigners must be allowed to join the nation.

Let me clear up two important points here:

One: The Bible goes on to state that anyone born into the nation of Jews, or a stranger joining the nation of Jews, who does not keep the rules, is automatically rejected by God from being a member of the nation and God will kill that person.

Two: Today’s nation of Israel has laws on their books concerning, Who is a Jew!

The law of Israel totally bypasses the laws outlined in the Jewish Bible and circumnavigates the rules of God. The nation of Israel will only accept a person as a Jew, if his or her mother was born a Jew. Therefore, a Gentile mother married to a Jewish father does not spawn a Jewish offspring. Only two Jews or a Jewish mother and a Gentile father can give birth to a Jewish child.

This is not only absurd, but also contrary to the rules of the Bible. Their reasoning is, a child adheres to the teachings of its mother and not its father. Therefore, a Jewish mother will instill Jewish belief into the child. Whereas a Gentile mother will instill non-Jewish beliefs into her child, which makes the child a Gentile.

The Bible is clear on this point. It states both parents can be foreigners and become Jewish. Therefore, their offspring will be Jewish. So, the Jewishness of a child is solely dependent upon the decision of the parents to become Jews and live as Jews, and the child’s decision when it reaches adulthood to continue believing in the one God of creation. In this light, even a Jewish mother, born of two Jewish parents, could have decided to reject her Jewishness and live as a Gentile; which would render her children Gentile and not Jews.

The fact is, the covenant was given to Abraham and not Sarah; and it was Abraham’s virtues the Lord cited, which rewarded Abraham’s children by allowing them to be God’s children; and not because of Isaac’s mother, or her being Jewish; because Sarah was also a Gentile like Abraham!

So, we entered a new phase in life last week.
Isaac started rolling over last week. He was starting to make us nervous not showing much interest in it all then someone flipped a switch and he’s everywhere now. Literally over night he figured out all directions: left & right, front to back, back to front.

CRAZINESS.

Also, this holiday season at Crosspoint, we’re poking fun at the messy sides of what happens during the holidays, but we’re also taking a really pointed look at what it means for Jesus to MESS with our lives. It’s something that I think we tend to gloss over in our American understanding of church. We think that we accept Jesus “in to our hearts” and we’re good.

+ But, there’s SO MUCH MORE TO IT THAN THAT!

Last week I had a conversation with a missionary friend of mine who said something to the effect of, “We as Americans have screwed up the concept of redemption. We’ve made it about perfectionism over accepting grace for our brokenness. But, then we let the pendulum swing the other way and we say that it’s OK that I have issues and take it as a ‘get out of jail free’ card on sinning. So, we’re screwed either way.”

We do screw things up quite a bit, don’t we?
It’s important that we accept our shit…
But it’s also important that we work through it…
And are attempting to get better.

+ This is where my brain has been the last few weeks.

@curt_walters teachings for @xptonline of “Safety Is Not An Option” and saying “if you’re staying stagnate (not moving and changing) then you’re dying” has hit me pretty heavy the last few weeks.

1. So, how do you deal with change?
2. Are you different than you were a year ago?
3. How are you changing?
4. What kind of mess has Jesus made in your life lately?

FOR ME:

1. I love change. It fuels me. I hate being the same.
2. I’m a dad now. It makes me want to be a better person.
3. I can be arrogant. I know you know. Now stop laughing. It’s mostly overcompensation for my own feelings of insecurity. It’s a constant refinement process. It’s something I work at everyday.
4. I like to be in control. I know you know. Now stop laughing! My dad says I come by it naturally. But, of late, I’m watching Jesus move more in my lack of control. Jesus works me over for thinking that sin is something to avoid completely on my own. I judge myself harshly and project it onto others. Jesus doesn’t do that to me or others… and that’s just to name a few…

How bout you?

+PJT

Gentile Christians who hate the sin of their own kind, when they see the Jews persecuted and murdere

Gentile Christians who hate the sin of their own kind, when they see the Jews persecuted and murdered, should use this acid test to know they are the ancestors of the ten lost tribes of Israel.

The apostle Paul referred to this mystery when he said,

“I say then, Have they (the Jews) stumbled that they should fall? God forbid: but rather through their (the Jews) fall, salvation is come unto the Gentiles, for to provoke them (the Gentiles) to jealousy. Now if the fall of them (the Jews) be the riches of the (Gentile) world, and the diminishing of them (the Jews) be the riches of the Gentiles; how much more their (the Jews) fullness?” (Romans 11:11-12)

The apostle Paul is saying that the Jews were made to fall (hence the scapegoat) so the Gentiles would be jealous of the Jews. A jealous person steals what someone else owns. This is God’s trick on the Gentile to get them to embrace the Jewish Messiah Jesus. In doing so, Gentiles would be forced by Rome to hear the Jewish Word of God; through which God could perform His miracle of salvation.

Therefore, if the Jewish Messiah Jesus made the Gentile rich in God’s grace, how much more will God make the Jews rich in God’s grace for having used them to be scapegoats? This is the true salvation plan. For which privilege Israel will see their God and enjoy eternal life forever!

Woe unto you liars! For you have gone the way of Balaam and Balak, who taught the children of Israel a lie for profit… .

Why did people from every other race under the Sun, leave their original nations and band together into what is known as Israel? The common denominator that caused the formation of Israel was a belief, rather than being flesh and blood ancestors. It seems that every nation spawned its share of family members that didn’t agree with their family’s idea of worshipping idols. It was this central idea that caused the formation of the people called Jews.

Although Abraham did have a son named Isaac, he wasn’t born until many foreign people were already a part of Abraham’s tribe known as the Hebrews. While every other race had its gods and idols, some of their children grew up resisting this belief.

Some people from many nations believed there could only be one God who created all things. These are the people God took out of every nation and from every race on earth to become Israel. They wandered away from their blood relatives eventually finding their way to a herd of people known as the Hebrews. They found a tribe that believed in one God. Joining the clan of Israel, which later became known as the Jews.

Even the oldest founding father of the nation of Israel, Abraham, came from a Gentile race known as the Babylonians. They worshipped idols. He left home to look for another land because of his resistance toward the gods of his own natural father. His journey brought him to many lands and peoples. He finally realized he was alone. He searched for and couldn’t find a tribe of people who believed as he believed. So, Abraham became the father of the tribe he sought.

A tribe that would accept anyone into it, who believed in One God. A nation of people whose only common denominator was their belief in the One God of creation. Thus, the Hebrew nation was born. Later they would become known as the Israelites. Today they are known as the Jews.

SAN DIEGO–Although the Torah records many details of the lives of Abraham and Jacob, not much is known about Isaac. Isaac seems to be a transitional figure whose exploits largely duplicate those of his father, Abraham.

In Genesis 26:17, we learn that Isaac “dug anew the wells which had been dug in the days of his father Abraham and which the Philistines had stopped up after Abraham’s death; and he gave them the same names his father had given them.”

Isaac’s servants then went on to dig two more wells. The water from each, however, was claimed by local tribesmen. Finally, they dug a third well and it was not disputed. Isaac “called it [the well] Rehoboth, saying, ‘Now at last the Lord has granted us ample space to increase in the land.” (Genesis 26:22)

Rabbi Simcha Raz says that we can learn an important lesson from this episode. Although Isaac dug two wells that were taken away from him, he did not give up looking for water. He continued digging until he succeeded in claiming his own well.

Rabbi Levi Yitzchak of Berditchev once set off on a trip through nearby villages to collect tzedakah to rescue captive Jews. He traveled from place to place without success. He became discouraged and decided: “I have set aside my study and prayer time for nothing. I would be better off going home and studying and davening.”

He was about to turn around when someone told him about a Jew who had been caught breaking into a home and was arrested and thrown in jail.

Rabbi Levi Yitzchak visited the thief in prison. “My son,” he said to him, “Look what you have accomplished for all of your work! Absolutely nothing. Remember this and don’t ever steal again.”

The thief was recalcitrant. “Rabbi,” he said. “I’ll think about it, but I’m not really worried about my failures. Even if I didn’t succeed this time, next time I will!”

The thief’s answer inspired Rabbi Levi Yitzchak. As he left the jail he thought to himself: “If this sinner is not worried about his failed attempt at illicit gain and plans to steal again, how much more should I not allow my failures to slow me down as I try to do a mitzvah!”

With that, Rabbi Levi Yitzchak set off on the road again until he collected enough money to fulfill his mission.

This mantra evokes the living God, asking protection and freedom from all sorrow and suffering. It is a prayer that adores the great creator and liberator, who out of love and compassion manifests, to protect us, in an earthly form. This Moolamantra has given great peace and joy to people all over the world, who have chanted, or even listened to it. It has the power to transport ones mind to the state of causeless love and limitless joy. The calmness that the mantra can give is to be experienced, not spoken about. Dear reader, here is the key with which any door to spiritual treasure could be opened. A tool which can be used to achieve all desires. A medicine which cures all ills. The nectar that can set man free! All auspiciousness and serenity is yours simply by chanting or listening to this magnificent Moolamantra.

Whenever you chant the Moolamantra even without knowing the meaning of it, that itself carries power. Therefore it is essential to know the meaning of the Mantra when you use it.

The Mantra is like calling a name. Just like when you call a person he comes and makes you feel his presence, the same manner when you chant this mantra, the supreme energy manifests everywhere around you. As the Universe is Omnipresent, the supreme energy can manifest anywhere and any time. It is also very important to know that the invocation with all humility, respect and with great necessity.

Last week I had the amazing opportunity to coordinate a full-day workshop for Peer Educators in the KwaPata & Siqongweni schools. These schools are connected with GOLD through ISAAC Implementing Organisation so we formed a team with ISAAC facilitators to run the workshop. The purpose of the workshop was to run a whole bunch of skills sessions (careers workshop, study methods and practicing gratitude), to teach Peer Educators about their Australian partner schools, and just generally, to have some fun. The workshop was AMAZING! When I think of the day, I just see a sea of smiles across the faces of all the Peer Educators, S4S volunteers and ISAAC facilitators. The Peer Educators really grasped onto everything they could learn about careers and study methods, and were excited to connect with their partner schools in Australia. In the second half of the day the Peer Educators shared their talents with each other through art, poetry, music and drama. I am always blown away by the talent of young South Africans. Worth a special mention are the three participants, who in just over 30 minutes prepared a rap about being Peer Educators – “I will take care for this life, because it is mine, no time to waste, just like GOLD I will shine.”

Obedience and sacrifice (Genesis 22)

Abraham did not hesitate and instead took it upon himself to slay his one and only son when God asked him to do so. And this act of obedience and fear of the God pleased God greatly. Because of this, Abraham is blessed by God – his descendants as numerous as the starts and sand, taking possession of the cities of the enemies and through his offspring all nations will be blessed. And all because Abraham has obeyed.

Being fair to people (Genesis 23)

When his wife Sarah died and Abraham was seeking a proper place for her burial, Ephron was willing to give Abraham his choice of site – a cave at the end of Ephron’s field for free. However, Abraham insisted that he pay the full price for the cave such that there will be no unhappiness between them, and because it is only fair that he do so.

The will of God (Genesis 24)

Abraham commanded his servant to bring back a wife for his son Isaac from his native land as was the promise from God. The servant was hesitant as he feared the woman would be unwilling to go back with him.

However, we see here how the will of God will work out despite being seemingly impossible. When the servant reached the town he prayed to God and asked that the first woman he meets that offers him water for himself and his camels would be the wife of Isaac, and that she will be willing to return with him. And indeed, Rebekah who was a beautiful virgin did exactly what he prayed for, eventually returning with him and was happily married to Isaac.

Death of Abraham (Genesis 25)

The promise of God was fulfilled when Abraham died at a ripe old age of 175 (!!!) leaving many many offsprings as well as an enormous fortune for his son Isaac. His other son Ishamael had many sons as well, and they continued to live in hostility toward all their brothers, as promised.

Birth of Jacob and Easau (Genesis 25)

We see here how readily God answers Isaac’s (and hopefully our) prayer – seeing that his wife Rebekah was barren, Isaac prayed to the Lord and the Lord answered his prayer. And Rebekah had not one, but 2 babies jostling within her. And to this the Lord said that “2 nations are in your womb, and 2 people from within you will be separated; 1 people will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger”

And indeed, we see how Jacob “deceived” Esau, the firstborn, to sell his birthright to him for some red stew.

Isaac conquers the famine (Genesis 26)

Isaac moved to Gerar en route to Egypt when there was a famine in the land. However, God stopped him from going to Egypt and instead asked him to stay where he was. This required faith as well – for Egypt would be the obvious choice but Isaac was obedient and stayed where he was.

[Interestingly, Isaac also told Abimelech (the King there) and his men that Rebekah was his sister (like father, like son) for fear of losing his life]

We see here how God blessed Isaac and his works – when he planted crops in that land it reaped a hundredfold and he became so wealthy that the Philistines in Gerar envied him, and Abimelech had no choice but to send him away for he became too powerful for them.

Jacob gets Isaac’s blessings (Genesis 27)

When Isaac grew old and blind he asked Esau to hunt some game and prepare some tasty food for him to eat so that he may give him his blessings before he die. But we see how Rebekah (who loved Jacob) conspired with Jacob to “steal” this blessing in rather comical proceedings – putting on Esau’s clothes, covering his smooth skins with goatskins so that he appears hairy.

And indeed, Isaac was deceived and blessed Jacob – making him lord over his brothers (including Esau) and relatives, with abundance of grain and wine.

And obviously Esau was angry and held a grudge against Jacob because not only had he stolen his birthright, he stole his blessings as well, and thus sought to kill his own brother. When Rebekah heard about this, she asked Jacob to flee to her brother Laban till Esau’s fury subsides.

Jacob’s dream at Bethel (Genesis 28)

When Jacob was fleeing he reached a certain place to rest for the night and had a most beautiful dream. In this dream he saw a stairway to heaven and the Lord residing above it spoke to him, promising to bless him and his offspring, and to be with him, watching over him wherever he goes.

Jacob was amazed by the dream and truly felt God’s favor on him, and in return he promised to claim this Lord as his own personal God and to return a tenth of whatever God has given him.

Love for a woman (Genesis 29)

Jacob finally arrived in Laban’s house in Haran, and when asked what his wages should be for his work, Jacob replied that he will work SEVEN years for Laban in return for his younger daughter Rachel whom he loved. And in the end, he really served 7 years to get Rachel, but it seemed like only a few days to him because of his love for her. This is true love indeed =D

But wait wait this love story has not ended yet because on the day of the wedding, Laban gave his elder daughter Leah to lay with Jacob instead! Jacob was shocked hen morning came and asked why Laban has deceived him. Laban explained that it was not in their custom to give the younger daughter (he was probably afraid that Leah would not ever marry for she was not as beautiful as Rachel) and asked that Jacob worked ANOTHER SEVEN years to marry Rachel.

And what an amazing man Jacob is. After being deceived by Laban, he willingly worked another seven years to marry Rachel, and loved her dearly (more than Leah). Thereafter, he worked for Laban for another 7 years.

But God sees Leah’s pain and misery because of Jacob’s obvious love for Rachel instead of her and thus gave her many sons.
