L’empresa Thomson ha introduït, durant el mes de novembre, una sèrie de millores a la seva plataforma ISI Web of Knowledge:

• Web of Science: Ara permet analitzar o refinar els resultats de cerca per Agència de Finançament i número de concessió. Això és útil per a veure qui està finançant la investigació d’una àrea, a on es destinen els diners, quines investigacions s’han desenvolupat gràcies a un  finançament concret, qui finança la investigació d’una institució, etc.
• ResearcherID conté noves eines per a fomentar la col·laboració entre investigadors: Els membres de ResearcherID poden crear online llistes amb les seves publicacions i donar-hi accés als seus col·legues fàcilment. També s’han millorat els perfils dels usuaris amb la possibilitat de vincular-hi llocs web, blogs o comunitats.
• Ara amb el  gestor de bibliografies EndNote Web, inclòs a la plataforma, es poden capturar mitjans d’informació no tradicional com vídeos de YouTube.

La información aparece en ficheros excell ordenados por materia, y diferenciados entre Social Science Citation Index y Science Citation Index.
La Biblioteca Universitaria de Sevilla continúa ofreciendo acceso a JRC, al factor de impacto y al resto de productos de Web of Knowledge, a través de sus recursos-e.

Thomson Reuters ja ha publicat el Factor d’Impacte de l’any 2008.

 El Factor d’impacte és una mesura de la importància i la qualitat de les revistes científiques. Cada any el calcula l’Institut d’Informació Científica (ISI o Intitute of Scientific Information) per a les revistes incloses a les seves bases de dades Science Citation Index i Social Science Citation Index. Podeu consultar les dades corresponents a través de la base de dades Journal Citation Report inclosa, al igual que les anteriors, a la plataforma ISI Web of Knowledge.

També teniu la possibilitat de descarregar-vos, des de la web de la Fecyt, el fitxer excel que conté el llistat complet de revistes incloses al Journal Citation Report amb el seu factor d’impacte del 2008. Veureu que existeix un fitxer pel Science Citation Index i un altre pel Social Science Citation Index i que a més teniu disponibles els fitxers d’anys anteriors.

Moltes vegades us parlem de bases de dades i altres recursos electrònics que trobem a Internet. Avui hem pensat que també pot ser interessant  recordar alguns dels recursos que proporciona el CRAI, com per exemple la base de dades Inspec.

 Aquesta base, produïda per l’Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), és molt útil per a físics, enginyers i científics en general. Cobreix la literatura publicada a més de 3800 revistes tècniques i científiques, procediments de  conferencies, llibres, reports, tesis, patents etc. des de 1968 fins ara sobre física, enginyeria elèctrica i electrònica, informàtica, tecnologia de la informació i enginyeria mecànica i de producció. També dóna informació de temes relacionats com ciència de materials, matemàtiques, ciències ambientals, nanotecnologia, tecnologia biomèdica, biofísica etc.

Té una indexació de gran qualitat amb un Thesaurus i una Classificació que permeten fer cerques amb termes molt precisos.

L’accés a Inspec és fa a través de la plataforma  ISI Web of Knowledge. Això facilita la seva utilització i la integració amb altres bases de dades molt conegudes com Science Citation Index(SCI). Des d’ Inspec podeu enllaçar amb la informació de SCI i completar la vostra cerca.

The Healthcare and Science business of Thomson Reuters has announced that Egyptian Universities Libraries (EUL) has selected Thomson Reuters to provide research solutions to their consortium of university libraries. EUL signed a multi-year contract with Thomson Reuters to provide Egypt’s researchers access to ISI Web of Knowledge.

According to Thomson Reuters, EUL is the first library consortium of Academic and Research libraries in Egypt. Currently it includes 15 Public Academic Universities, which means it serves about 75% of researchers and scientists in Egypt. It is funded by Egyptian Universities (under the Supreme Council of Universities) and the Information and Communication Projects in Higher Education.

Recently, Thomson Reuters had unveiled InCites, a Web-based solution to provide users with the tools needed to demonstrate the impact and importance of their institution’s research. Through InCites, the company aims to empower its customers with a one-stop system to quantitatively evaluate productivity and influence in order to make strategic decisions. 

“We are excited to bring ISI Web of Knowledge to our members and to provide them with complete access to information necessary to further their world-class research,” said Dr. Hany Helal, Egyptian Minister of Higher Education & Scientific Research. “We have found that compared to other services on the market, Thomson Reuters offers an unparalleled depth and breadth of content within its research solutions.”

ISI Web of Knowledge is an integrated research platform that helps users find, analyze, and manage information in the sciences, social sciences, and arts and humanities.

Using the Web of Science, says Thomson Reuters, the multidisciplinary bibliographic resource within ISI Web of Knowledge, EUL members now have access to nearly 11,000 research journals from around the world. 

Additionally, EUL now offers its researchers other key components of ISI Web of Knowledge, including Journal Citation Reports – a systemic, objective way to evaluate, categorize and compare the world’s leading scholarly journals; and MEDLINE – a premier bibliographic database that indexes life sciences records from 1950 to the present.

With headquarters in New York and major operations in London and Eagan, Minnesota, Thomson Reuters employs over 50,000 people in 93 countries, says the company.

• Nova base de dades de Salut Pública i Biomedicina, Global Health de CABI amb continguts difícils de trobar que complementen les bases de dades BIOSIS i Medline.
• Funcionalitats millorades dels mapes de cites.
• Ara es poden guardar perfils de cerca creats amb les funcionalitats Refine i Analyze. També podeu programar alertes d’aquests perfils.
• Millores al ResearcherID

La  Fundació Espanyola per a la Ciència i Tecnologia (FECYT) ens ha comunicat que el proper cap de setmana hauran talls en l’accés a ISI-Web of Knowledge (WOK) degut a tasques de  manteniment.  Us adjuntem el seu missatge :

“Tal y como aparece en la portada de la Web of Knowledge hoy, Thomson Reuters anuncia cambios para este fin de semana. Estos cambios  comenzarán con modificaciones sobre End note Web el viernes 30 de enero, a eso de las tres de la tarde hora española y continuarán el  domingo 1 de febrero con cambios sobre Web of Knowledge a la misma hora, a eso de las tres de la tarde hora española. Por todo ello,  Thomson avisa que se van a producir algunas interrupciones en el servicio, debido a dichos cambios. El contenido de los cambios aun no  ha sido notificado, por lo que les mantendremos informados tan pronto nos avisen.”

Cortes intermitentes del acceso a WOK
Desde ayer por la tarde venimos experimentando por parte de Thomson cortes intermitentes en el acceso a WOK, que se han extendido a lo largo del día de hoy. Es posible que la causa sea el fallo alternativo de uno de sus nodos lo que esté provocando dichos cortes y esperamos que se resuelva cuanto antes.
Agradecemos la máxima difusión que puedan realizar entre su personal bibliotecario e investigadores.

It was originally published on an internal Thomson Reuters website. James Testa (pictured to the left) joined Thomson Reuters (then ISI) in 1983. From 1983 through 1996 he managed the Publisher Relations Department and was directly responsible for building and maintaining working relations with the over three thousand international scholarly publishers whose journals are indexed by Thomson Reuters.  In 1996 Mr. Testa was appointed the Director of Editorial Development. Thomson Reuters extends the power of its Journal Selection Process by focusing on the world’s best regional journals. The goal of this initiative is to enrich the collection of important and influential international journals now covered in Web of Science with a number of superbly produced journals whose content is of specific regional importance.

Since its inception nearly fifty years ago by Eugene Garfield, PhD, the primary goal of the Journal Selection Process has been to identify those journals which formed the core literature of the sciences, social sciences, and arts & humanities. These journals publish the bulk of scholarly research, receive the most citations from the surrounding literature, and have the highest citation impact of all journals published today. The journals selected for the Web of Science are, in essence, the scholarly publications that meet the broadest research needs of the international community of researchers. They have been selected on the basis of their high publishing standards, their editorial content, the international diversity of their contributing authors and editorial board members, and on their relative citation frequency and impact. International journals selected for the Web of Science define the very highest standards in the world of scholarly publishing.

In recent years, however, the user community of the Web of Science has expanded gradually from what was once a concentration of major universities and research facilities in the United States and Western Europe to an internationally diverse group including virtually all major universities and research centers in every region of the world. Where once the Thomson Reuters sales force was concentrated in Philadelphia and London, local staff are now committed to the service of customers at offices in Japan, Singapore, Australia, Brazil, China, France, Germany, Taiwan, India, and South Korea.

As the global distribution of Web of Science expands into virtually every region on earth, the importance of regional scholarship to our emerging regional user community also grows. Our approach to regional scholarship effectively extends the scope of the Thomson Reuters Journal Selection Process beyond the collection of the great international journal literature: it now moves into the realm of the regional journal literature. Its renewed purpose is to identify, evaluate, and select those scholarly journals that target a regional rather than an international audience. Bringing the best of these regional titles into the Web of Science will illuminate regional studies that would otherwise not have been visible to the broader international community of researchers.

In the Fall of 2006, the Editorial Development Department of Thomson Reuters began this monumental task. Under the direction of Maureen Handel, Manager of Journal Selection, the team of subject editors compiled a list of over 10,000 scholarly publications representing all areas of science, social science, the arts, and humanities. Over the next twelve months the team was able to select 700 regional journals for coverage in the Web of Science.

The Web of Science Regional Journal Profile

These regional journals are typically published outside the US or UK. Their content often centers on topics of regional interest or that are presented with a regional perspective. Authors may be largely from the region rather than an internationally diverse group. Bibliographic information is in English with the exception of some arts and humanities publications that are by definition in native language (e.g. literature studies). Cited references must be in the Roman alphabet. All journals selected are publishing on time and are formally peer reviewed. Citation analysis may be applied but the real importance of the regional journal is measured by the specificity of its content rather than its citation impact.

Subject Areas and Their Characteristics

These first 700 journals selected in 2007 included 161 Social Science titles, 148 Clinical Medicine titles, 108 Agriculture/Biology/Environmental Science titles, 95 Physics/Chemistry/Earth Science titles, 89 Engineering/Computing/Technology titles, 61 Arts/Humanities titles, and 38 Life Sciences titles. The editors’ exploration of each subject area surfaced hidden treasure.

Social Sciences:
The European Union and Asia Pacific regions yielded over 140 social science titles. Subject areas such as business, economics, management, and education have been enriched with regional coverage. Several fine law journals have been selected and will provide balance in an area normally dominated by US journals. Because of the characteristically regional nature of many studies in the social sciences, this area will provide a rich source of coverage that would otherwise not be available to the broader international community.

Clinical Medicine:
Several regional journals dealing with General Medicine, Cardiology, and Orthopedics have been selected. Latin America, Asia Pacific, and European Union are all well represented here. Research in Surgery is a growing area in regional journals. Robotic and other novel surgical technology is no longer limited to the developed nations but now originates in China and India as well and has potential use internationally.

The spread of diseases such as bird flu and SARS eastward and westward from Southeast Asia is a high interest topic regionally and internationally. In some cases host countries develop defensive practices and, if enough time elapses, vaccines. Regional studies on these critical subjects will now be available in Web of Science.

Agriculture/Biology/Environmental Sciences:
Many of the selected regional titles in this area include new or endemic taxa of interest globally. Likewise regional agriculture or environmental issues are now known to result in global consequences. Many titles are devoted to niche topics such as polar/tundra environment issues, or tropical agronomy. Desertification has heightened the value of literature from central Asian countries. Iranian journals report voluminously on the use of native, desert tolerant plants and animals that may soon be in demand by desertification threatened countries.

Physics/Chemistry/Earth Sciences:
Regional journals focused on various aspects of Earth Science are now available in Web of Science. These include titles focused on geology, geography, oceanography, meteorology, climatology, paleontology, remote sensing, and geomorphology. Again, the inherently regional nature of these studies provides a unique view of the subject and brings forward studies heretofore hidden.

Engineering/Computing/Technology:
Engineering is a subject of global interest. Regional Journals in this area typically present subject matter as researched by regional authors for their local audience. Civil and Mechanical Engineering studies are well represented, providing solutions to engineering problems arising from local geological, social, environmental, climatological, or economic factors.

Arts & Humanities:
The already deep coverage of Arts & Humanities in Web of Science is now enhanced by additional regional publications focused on such subjects as History, Linguistics, Archaeology, and Religion. Journals from countries in the European Union, Latin American, Africa, and Asia Pacific regions are included.

Life Sciences:
Life Sciences subject areas lending themselves to regional studies include parasitology, micro-biology, and pharmacology. A specific example of valuable regional activity is stem cell research. The illegality of stem cell studies in an increasing number of developed countries has moved the research to various Asian countries where it is of great interest inside and outside of the region.

Conclusion

The primary mission of the Journal Selection Process is to identify, evaluate and select the top tier international and regional journals for coverage in the Web of Science. These are the journals that have the greatest potential to advance research on a given topic. In the pursuit of this goal Thomson Reuters has partnered with many publishers and societies worldwide in the development of their publications. As an important by-product of the steady application of the Journal Selection Process, Thomson Reuters is actively involved in raising the level of research communication as presented in journals. The objective standards described in the Journal Selection Process will now be focused directly on a new and expansive body of literature. Our hope, therefore, is not only to enrich the editorial content of Web of Science, but also to expand relations with the world’s primary publishers in the achievement of our mutual goal: more effective communication of scientific results to the communities we serve.

Thomson (FECYT) ha anunciado que el próximo 27 de enero se dispondrá de acceso directo a la nueva WOK. La forma de acceso será igualmente a través de los enlaces existentes disponibles en nuestra Web. La nueva interfaz simplificada hace más fácil el acceso y el uso de los contenidos. ISI Web of Knowledge ofrece opciones de búsqueda, análisis e intercambio para satisfacer las necesidades de todos los usuarios, desde los menos experimentados a los más profesionales. Todas las bases de datos estarán disponibles en la nueva interfaz.
Actualmente, se dispone de acceso tanto a la nueva versión como a la versión anterior de ISI Web of Knowledge. A partir del 27 de enero se suspenderá este acceso doble a ISI Web of Knowledge y todos los usuarios e instituciones accederán únicamente a la versión nueva. La versión antigua ya no estará disponible.

L’accés al portal ISI Web of Knowledge, que dona accés a una sèrie de bases de dades i d’altres serveis, ha canviat; us animem a que vegeu les noves funcionalitats (en castellà), i us recomanem que, si no ho heu fet encara, us enregistreu per tal d’aprofitar-les totes. De passada, comprovem que la cerca transversal per mitjà del CrossSearch ja funciona! I aprofitem per recordar-vos que també disposeu gratuïtament del gestor de bibliografies EndNote Web via Web of Knowledge.

Volem presentar-vos un recurs que ofereix la plataforma ISI Web of Knowledge i que pensem us pot interessar. Es tracta de ResearcherID, una xarxa social d’investigadors que us assigna un identificador personal amb el que podeu presentar els vostres treballs i gestionar les vostres mètriques personals (índex h, distribució de les cites per any, nombre total i mitjana de vegades citat, etc.).

Tots els membres de la UB teniu dret a pertànyer a aquesta comunitat acadèmica, només heu de registrar-vos, primer al ISI WoK i després a ResearcherID. Un cop us heu registrat creeu el vostre perfil i després si incloeu el número de ResearcherID en la vostra signatura de correu electrònic els vostres col·legues, editors i col·laboradors podran accedir fàcilment a la llista de les vostres publicacions, a les mètriques dels vostres treballs  i veure com el vostre treball està essent citat arreu del món.
