I don’t even know what to say except pass me the tissues…and the Seagram’s. This is from Stephen A. Smith’s website. No relation to J.R. aka Earl…

TO ALL OF MY FANS:

I would like to announce my plans to retire from the National Basketball Association. I always thought that when I left the game, it would be because I couldn’t help my team the way that I was accustomed to. However, that is not the case. I still have tremendous love for the game, the desire to play, and a whole lot left in my tank. I feel strongly that I can still compete at the highest level. Stepping away from the game will allow me to spend quality time with my wife and kids. This is a reward that far exceeds anything that I’ve ever achieved on the basketball court. I have prayed for this day and I see it as my greatest gift. I want to thank the people of Reebok International Ltd., for always allowing me to be me and for supporting me my whole career through all the ups and downs. I have enjoyed 13 wonderful seasons in the NBA, and I am grateful. I want to first acknowledge my fans everywhere, who have been with me throughout my entire career. Without you, there would be no me. You should all know that I appreciate your support from the bottom of my heart. Thank you! To Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Isiah Thomas, Charles Barkley and Larry Bird, you guys gave me the vision to play the game that will be forever in my heart. To my Mom, who encouraged and inspired me to play every day, and to all of my family and friends who stood by me from the beginning. Thank you! To my high school coach, Michael Bailey, Coach John Thompson at Georgetown University, Coach Larry Brown and to all of my other coaches, teammates, administrators, owners and staff who’ve been a part of my career, Thank you as well! I’d like to give a special thanks to the people of Memphis. I never played a home game for your beloved Grizzlies, but I want you to know how much I appreciate the opportunity given me by a great owner in Michael Heisley, and the support of the city. I wish the Memphis Grizzlies’ organization all of the success that the game has to offer. And finally, to the city of Philadelphia: I have wonderful memories of my days in a Sixers’ uniform. To Philly fans, thank you. Your voice will always be music to my ears.

God Bless all of you, ALLEN IVERSON

PS- Whoever Ali is I just want her to know she can call me anytime for a late night boot knocking session. “You bring the woodpecker I’ll bring the wood,” LL Cool J.

OK, I might have added the PS part. This is a very sad day for what seems like a “life long” A.I. fan. The bad news is basketball will never be the same again for me. I knew this day would come someday but I hoped it would come in Philly. I guess the preverbal “light at the end of the tunnel” is Allen Iverson will remain looking fine as wine. And in case you were unaware, wine is apparently fine. Hopefully next year his wife and kids will be driving him up the walls and he will pull a Jordan and make a final run in the NBA. Hopefully in a 76ers uniform. I miss you already Allen.

I started playing basketball when I was 6 years old. The last time I stepped on a basketball court w

I started playing basketball when I was 6 years old. The last time I stepped on a basketball court was senior year of high school. Needless to say, a great majority of my childhood and adolescence revolved around the game of basketball. My winters were spent playing in my township’s rec league on Saturdays and traveling around the state with my travel team on Sundays. My springs were spent watching the New York Knicks religiously.

Believe it or not, I lived and died with the New York Knicks in the 90’s. They were my team. I didn’t get their channel on the 19-inch television in my room, so every night I would fall asleep with a Sony handheld radio under my pillow and I would listen to the soothing voices of Gus Johnson and Walt Frazier call the Knicks games on WFAN. I can’t tell you how many nights I was woken up by one of Gus Johnson’s frenzied calls when John Starks hit a game-winning three or Charles Oakley dove into the press row to save a loose ball. If I dozed off before the game was over, the first thing I would do before I brushed my teeth for school the next morning was turn the radio back on and try to catch the final score.

Although I wasn’t even 7 years old at the time, I can vaguely remember the 1994 Finals against Houston. Luckily, they made it back again in the spring of 1999. After a season shortened by the lock-out, my Knicks made an improbable run to the NBA Finals as the 8th seed in the Eastern Conference. It was one of the best springs of my life. From Allan Houston’s runner in the lane to win Game 5 against Pat Riley and the Heat, to Larry Johnson’s 4-point play in Game 4 of the Conference Finals against the Pacers. I watched that play on my knees with my hands clasped together in front of the TV in my parents bedroom. When Johnson hit that shot over Dale Davis, I jumped so high that I came dangerously close to hitting my head on the ceiling fan. My parents thought that someone dropped a piano through the floor.

In the Finals, we were swept away in five games by a Spurs team that was at the beginning of a run that would bring them 4 titles in the next 7 years. As for us, it was the beginning of the end. After the 1999 Finals, we made one more run the following season, taking the Miami Heat to 7 games in another classic May battle before falling to the Pacers in the Conference Finals. Patrick Ewing was shipped off to Seattle the following offseason and the Knicks have made the playoffs only twice more since then and only posted a winning record once.

Over the next 6 years, I watched an incompetent front office and even more incompetent ownership run a once proud franchise into the ground. The decline of the New York Knicks this past decade has been such an epic disaster that it makes the Titanic look like a bath toy. Something else happened during that time though, something happened between the Knicks and I. We began to grow apart. Like they had done to so many fans, their organization had alienated me. The World’s Most Famous Arena, Madison Square Garden, a place that had seen NBA Championships and countless legends now houses a failing franchise and the laughingstock of the NBA. The mecca of basketball, a building that never stopped rocking in the city that never sleeps, now struggles to fill its seats.

This where you come in, Mr. James. I, along with just about every other person that still calls themselves a New York Knicks fan, desperately want you to come to New York next summer. In fact, it’s more than that — we need you to come to New York next summer. I know we haven’t won a championship in 36 years and that we haven’t even made the playoffs since 2003, but believe me when I say that New Yorkers are passionate about their basketball. You might not be able to tell at first glance, but we still love our Knicks. We still love our Knicks even if this past decade was like the sports equivalent of going through a messy divorce. Maybe we’re a little more distant now, but we’re still here. Maybe we aren’t as loud as we used to be, but it was them who took away our voice. It was the Jim Dolans and Scott Laydens and Isiah Thomases that took this team away from us, and now we want it back. We want it all back. If you want it too, this is where you’re going to find it. If you want to win a title, we are your best shot. We have cleared enough cap space for 2010 to put an actual supporting cast around you, not just Shaquille O’Neal. If you want to become the biggest superstar the NBA has ever seen, New York is the city that will let you become just that. Come on, I mean Spike Lee is even wearing a #23 Knicks jersey already. And it’s not Toney Douglas.

We need you to save our team, LeBron. We need you to bring basketball back to New York, back to where it belongs, back to Madison Square Garden. We need you to make us matter again. The days of intense April and May playoff battles against the Heat and Pacers are long gone now. Long gone is Patrick Ewing dunking over Alonzo Mourning to win Game 7. Long gone is Allan Houston hitting a jumper over Reggie Miller to ice a Game 6 in Indiana. Long gone is John Starks dunking over Michael Jordan, Jeff Van Gundy swinging on Mourning’s legs and Chris Childs taking a swing at P.J. Brown. It’s all a distant memory now.

LeBron, you can help us remember again. There’s so much history that’s been lost among the wreckage of this decade. With your help, we can start rewriting that history. Adding pages to the legends, and adding banners to the rafters. LeBron James, deep down inside you want to be New York Knickerbocker. So when we send you that invitation next July, come on in and make yourself at home.

Sincerely,

Every New York Knicks Fan Ever

Originally uploaded by asdfsdwerwe

There was an Eddy Curry sighting last night in Indiana, and it wasn’t at a Cheesecake Factory buffet–it was in an actual NBA game.

Curry hasn’t played in, like, decades, and he remains one of the prime symbols of The Isiah Thomas Fuckup. Yet the buzz is that Curry slimmed down during the approximately 47 years of rehab he’s been doing since he got injured and that he’s almost–almost!–ready to be an NBA contributor again.

Curry put up decent numbers last night — 10 & 4 in under 12 minutes. But his appearance certainly has more to do with New York’s desire to showcase him for potential trade suitors. And by showcase I mean proving that Curry actually exists, that he can still squeeze into an NBA uniform without special tailoring, and hasn’t been swallowed up for good in the Bermuda Triangle or made himself a permanent resident at a Fat Camp in Jersey.

Even if Curry actually did slim down during the offseason (big if), but no smart GM should want Curry. Fortunately for Knicks GM Donnie Walsh, the league’s GM pool is populated by many dumb execs. One will surely bite on Curry, right? (pun intended.)

Imagine a conversation between Walsh and Memphis GM Chris Wallace:

Phone rings in Wallace’s office. Wallace picks up.

Wallace: Hello?

Walsh: Chris! How are you?

Wallace: Who is this? If this is Mitch Kupchack, hang up right now! I told you to stop calling.

Walsh: Chris, calm down, it’s Donnie. In New York. We’ve got Curry on the block. I wanted to give you a crack before I shop him around the rest of the league. You know, do you a favor.

Wallace: I don’t know, we’ve already got Gasol and Thabeet. Plus we just got Zach Randolph to shore up the 4.

Walsh: That’s precisely why you need Curry! He and Z-Bo were so close–on the cusp–of doing great things here. Then Isiah and Steph screwed everything up! Can’t you see that?

Wallace: Well, Isiah and Steph DID screw everything up. And it would be nice to have two low-post scorers…let me think about this.

To be continued…

Simply put, NBAmate.com is one of the funniest and creative blogs out there. It is probably Australia’s best NBA blog. Here is the explanation of the Doubting Thomas Award:

Here at NBAMate, we love the underdog, the little “Aussie battler” (to use a colloquial term). So we thought, instead of turning our backs on the players who have tried so hard to fulfill our expectations and failed, why not celebrate them instead? In the spirit of Thomas the Apostle and Isiah Thomas, the most doubted NBA figure of the modern era, we proudly present the inaugural Doubting Thomas Award. An award to recognise the achievements of those who have achieved so little. An award to celebrate those players who have frustrated us beyond belief, yet leave us with a tinge of hope that maybe, just maybe, they’ll turn it around soon. Because let’s face it, no matter how many chances you’ve blown, there’s always the chance you won’t fuck up the next one.

You got to love “recognise” spelled with an S instead of Z.

Anyway, here is the rundown:

Danilo Gallinari, New York Knicks by Tizzle – NBAMate’s resident Knicks fan

Patrick O’Bryant, Toronto Raptors by Loscy – Loscy Celtics Blog
Yes yes, I am an absolute sucker for players that used to dress in Celtic green. Patrick O’Bryant made a cameo for the Celtics in the 2008-2009 season and was seen as a possible asset coming off the bench with length, defense, and youth: three things the Celtics bench desperately needed to defend their title from 2008. So what if he POB had absolutely nothing in his offensive repertoire and couldn’t even keep in front of a glass door on defense? So what if POB was constantly hurt? So what if he was the first lottery pick to be sent into the D-League in his inaugural season? So what if his then coach/GM at Golden State (Donnie boy!) told POB that he wasn’t getting any better at all and that he was a long-term project and a disappointment? So what if Golden State could have had Rajon Rondo or Kyle Lowry or Paul Milsap or Sergio Rodriguez or even Shannon Brown? So what if he was picked up by the Celtics and then shipped to Toronto for a measly future second round draft pick? I’m pulling for you big guy. Why? Mainly because Don Nelson is a meathead of a coach/GM/person and since he hated you, I therefore have to atomically root for you. Let’s dedicate ourselves to good solid defense in the paint, crashing the boards, and finishing on second chances. This Bud’s for you, #13.

Channing Frye, Phoenix Suns by Paul – Two Sides of the Hoop

Roko Ukic, Milwaukee Bucks by Romy – Hip Hoop Junkies

Corey Brewer, Minnesota Timberwolves by Anton – The Sport Count

Goran Dragic, Phoenix Suns by Chucko – The Frustrated Suns Fan

Marco Belinelli, Toronto Raptors by Mookie – A Stern Warning

Chris Quinn, Miami Heat by Jobba – NBAMate’s resident draft expert

JJ Redick, Orlando Magic by Ryan – Two Sides of the Hoop

Kwame Brown, Detroit Pistons by Robd – NBAMate Captain

I mean seriously… what a freakin’ list of players. Maybe Chris Wallace will sign all of them for a mega-bust team?!?!?

Final words from RobD over at NBAmate.com:

What an exclusive list of players that is. If after reading that you feel the urge to ram your head through your PC monitor, then don’t stress – that is the typical reaction of having to visualize these guys on a basketball court. It’s also quite a broad mix of talent. Some of these players find themselves within the regular rotation – or *gasp* even the starting line ups – for their respective teams. Others seem destined to be warming the bench, praying that a teammate of theirs will be severely injured so they can finally get some decent minutes. Whatever their situation, one thing is clear: the only way is up. So tune in for the first Doubting Thomas Rankings, near the end of the month, to see how they’re faring on their road to redemption.

It’s a great idea, and I’m flattered/honored/excited for the chance to join these other folks in a little underdog jostling. I’ll be sure to update you each month when we have our rundowns, but for now, peep at what others are writing– it’s good stuff.

In light of the regular season commencing tomorrow night (home versus Jacksonville at 7:00 p.m.), it

In light of the regular season commencing tomorrow night (home versus Jacksonville at 7:00 p.m.), it seems appropriate to do a brief run-down of some key games on the 2009-10 schedule.

@ Florida (11/24): For obvious reasons (certain elitist, insufferable fans, anyone?), this game has special significance. Last year the Seminoles beat the favored (at the time) Gators (57-55), here in Tallahassee. This year, many things have changed, yet many remain the same. We no longer have Toney Douglas. They no longer have Nick Calathes (who cracked the top-five on my 2009 “people I would punch in the mouth if given a chance” list). They are still overrated (16:1 odds to win the national title, anyone?). We are still underrated (100:1 odds to win the national title, anyone?). While this game will be played in Gainesville, I feel good about it.

@ Ohio State (12/2): Some prominent questions: Will FSU’s Big Ten struggles continue (losses last year against inferior Northwestern and Wisconsin teams)? Will Leonard Hamilton inexplicably slow the game down, and limit Solomon Alabi’s minutes (played only 20 minutes in the first round of the NCAA tourney against Wisconsin) against a team that lacks athleticism and employs a slow-it-down strategy (yes, I am still bitter)? Will Deividas Dulkys hit seventeen threes against that slow, pack-it-in Big Ten defense (and more importantly, will it be enough?)? Something tells me more can go wrong than can go right, in this one. I hope I am wrong.

vs. FIU (12/6): This is a rare opportunity; one that I especially will cherish. We get to see Isiah Thomas, early in his college coaching career. Zeke is a fascinating enigma. For starters, he was one of the greatest point guards in the history of basketball. He was also one of the most inept general managers to ever run a team (thankfully for Isiah, embattled former Celtics and current Grizzlies GM Chris Wallace takes the cake for the worst of all time). Isiah is also the man that once said Larry Bird was only considered great, because of his skin color (although he did later claim that it was a joke… which very few people ever bought). While he was right about White favoritism (Duke, anyone?) as a whole, his comments about Larry Bird were dead wrong. All of this begs the obvious question: Will Joey Moreau (seemingly awkward White kid with an awful haircut, who wears the number 33…sound familiar?) channel his inner Larry Legend, and exact revenge? I am starting a petition, mandating that Moreau grow a wispy mustache (see below… oh yeah, that’s the stuff… I hope you are one of the four people who read this blog, Joey).

@ Maryland (1/10): This will be a huge ACC matchup. Greivis Vazquez is a stud (17.5 ppg, 5.0 ast, 5.4 reb, 1.4 stl in 2008-09), but does he have enough help? Will it even matter? Last year’s overtime thriller went the Noles’ way. This year, we have no Toney Douglas, and play the Terps in College Park (the first time that these teams meet, anyway). Needless to say, I am nervous, but I foresee this being a very close and entertaining game.

@ Duke (1/27): This will mark the rematch of last year’s ACC championship game (Duke won, as you well know). The Seminoles went 0-3 versus the Dukies in 2008-09. However, one of those losses was the senior night debacle at Cameron Indoor, in which the ACC refs handed Duke the win on a silver platter. For those of you who are unfamiliar, let me put it this way: The referees in that game made Fox News, the WWE, the moderator from the dance-off in Starsky and Hutch (see below), SEC football officials and Tim Donaghy all seem neutral, fair and unbiased. You know what? Screw it. I am moving on before I get carried away, and start Googling “Kyle Singler’s home address” and “hitmen for hire in Durham, NC.”

@ North Carolina (2/24): While the reigning national champions lost a lot of talent (Lawson, Hansbrough and Ellington to name a few), they are still North Carolina (arguably the top recruit destination… unless you want a free car, someone to take your SATs for you, and an endless supply of hookers, which John Calipari can provide for you at Kentucky), and have obviously reloaded. We get the fortunate opportunity of facing them in the Dean Dome, near the end of the season when they will have had three months for their young players to develop. Saying I am looking forward to this game would be like me saying “oh yeah, I can’t wait to have surgery on my genitals.”

Wake Forest (3/3): Senior night in Tallahassee, against a Wake Forest team that lost its best player (Jeff Teague) to the NBA. I picture Ryan Reid taking over this game (leading FSU to a blowout win… you heard it here first), followed by Leonard Hamilton giving Chris Singleton a Rudy-style “If you had one tenth the heart of Reid, you’d have made All-American by now!” speech.

All things considered, there are a lot of quality games on the schedule this year. Unfortunately, a lot of those games are on the road (of the teams we play once: @ UF, @OSU, @ Duke, @ NC, to name a few), but I have faith our boys will come through.

…and if not? Well, the Benkshot will have the (metaphorical) water needed to quench your thirst for incessant, irrational bitching.

Alright, the title probably isn’t true. I like Bill Simmons and won’t tear into him like Deadspin does. But it’s very eery that his 18th recommendation of 33 to improve the NBA — detailed on page 264 of The Book of Basketball — is precisely what I proposed in a May 2 post on this blog. It’s essentially that Isiah Thomas, due to all the horrific decisions he’s made during his career (ruining the CBA, ruining the Knicks), should have a reality show in which he operates various businesses.

Here is the idea from his book:

“18. I wish Isiah Thomas would be given his own reality TV show where he takes over businesses, stores and companies and runs them into the ground (like a cross between 30 Days and Wife Swap). In one episode, he could take over a popular Starbucks and immediately fire the most popular barista, raise the prices of chewy marshmallow squares and trade the store’s only espresso machine for a six-month supply of soy milk. The following week, he could become a casino pit boss in Vegas and immediately raise every blackjack table to $25, ban smoking, get rid of every American-born blackjack dealer and force the waitresses to wear more clothes. On and on it would go.”

You can read my post here:

http://kylestack.com/2009/05/02/the-isiah-thomas-show/

Odd, indeed. I’m sure Simmons came up with the idea on his own. He’s been torching the man for years (and rightly so). It’s just cool to see that people think alike on the ideas of embarrassing Thomas. Now an entire generation of young basketball fans knows him only from his failures and not from his greatness as one of the NBA’s best point guards and fiercest competitors.

P.S. It’s November 15, and I’m on page 265.

How about rookie point guard Brandon Jennings going off for 32 points and leading the Bucks over the Nuggets last night? I can recall reading so much garabge about this kid going over to Europe to play ball instead of staying here in America and attending school. ”I just go out there and play with a chip on my shoulder.” said Jennings. The Bucks are in first place in the Eastern Conference Central division. Scott Skiles does a terrific job, regardless of what you think of him.

The Cavaliers put it on the Magic last night. I loved listening to Hubie Brown and Jeff Van Gundy do the game. Tonight Cleveland plays the Heat on TNT. Do not ask LBJ about free-agency. Did you see his kicks last night?

I’ve been watching Orlando Magic guard Vince Carter for a few years and yes he is a great athlete and he puts a lot of points in the book. But imagine if this guy, at 6′8″ went into the post and looked to score instead of hoisting up long, rainbow, Purvis Short-like jumpers?

Everyone tried to hype up the Hornets-Suns game last night mainly by using Steve Nash vs Chris Paul. Well the bottom line is the Suns won by 20 and have a record of 8-1; which is all that matters. Tonight the Suns take on the Lakers in the second of a DH on TNT. Nash played 22 minutes last night so he should be well rested.

Jeff Goodman of Fox Sports on Isiah Thomas’ mother doing ok after surgery. Years ago, everytime you read something about Isiah while growing up in Chicago you always heard about how she kept her son away from all the gangs. Let’s hope she is doing well with recovery.

“Ms. Thomas was deemed an extremely high surgical risk,” Dr. Duane Follman said in a statement. “Because of her age and multiple other health factors, an invasive open heart surgery would have been too high a risk for survival and recovery. This minimally invasive procedure was a better course of treatment.”

The Nets lost another one last night, they are now 0-8 on the season.

Earl Boykins is back in the league with the Washington Wizards.

Is it just me or does it seem like every major sports season is starting earlier and earlier these days?

Regular season college basketball gets underway tonight with four games on the schedule, highlighted by defending champion North Carolina tipping off the season with a match-up with Florida International and their new head coach Isiah Thomas. Top 25 teams California, Ohio State and Syracuse also get underway tonight in games against inferior opponents as a part of the Coaches v. Cancer event.

The last time Thomas was involved in a college basketball game, he also faced the Tar Heels, scoring 23 points in the 1981 NCAA championship game to lead Indiana to a 63-50 win. Thomas went on to a Hall-of-Fame career as a player for the Detroit Pistons, leading the Bad Boys to back-to-back titles in 1989 and 1990. But since he retired from playing, Thomas has had a bit of a checkered career as a coach and executive. He became the head coach of the Indiana Pacers, but was let go after three uninspiring seasons. Later, Thomas was an executive with the New York Knicks from 2003-08, coaching them for the final two of five straight losing seasons on his watch. Chants of “Fire Isiah” were ubiquitous during his final season on the bench with the Knicks.

But now, Thomas has reappeared as the coach at tiny Florida International. He was hired because it is believed that he will be able to recruit top-notch talent to the struggling program because of his high profile, and that appears to be working as he has already received a verbal commitment from highly-touted Indianapolis forward Dominique Ferguson as well as well-regarded point guard Phillip Taylor. But neither of those players will be able to help out Thomas this season, which figures to be a long one.

But if Thomas is successful this season, even marginally, it will be interesting to see how long he stays at Florida International. DePaul coach Jerry Wainright’s job is believed to be in danger, and Thomas is a Chicago native. It would not be a stretch to see him in the running for the Blue Demons’ job if he’s able to make Florida International respectable.

It’s heeeerrrrrrrree.

Time to tell all your football friends “Goodbye.” Time to say, “Hey, I’d love to stay at work a little longer tonight, but really, I can’t. It’s a 7 o’clock tip-off.” Time to jump around. Time to strategically wear Carolina blue clothing items on gamedays. Yes, ladies and gentlmen, it’s college basketball season.

The Heels take on Florida International tonight, though if Golden Panthers coach Isiah Thomas had his way, FIU would be playing Ohio State. As season openers go, the whole Isiah thing has given this one a little punch for me, a little extra pizzazz that playing FIU would not have had without it. Plus, it’s Isiah’s first game as a college head coach. I’m interested to see if he’s got game in regards to coaching college kids. That and the fact that this kicks off the 100th season of Carolina hoops.

I was going to take some time and post any local previews about the game, but TarHeelBlue has kindly done that for me, so let’s not let their diligent work go unnoticed. Check it out.

Three things I’ll be looking for:

1) Larry Drew II at the point: If (as some of those game previews suggest) the Heels really are a Final Four caliber team, they will need a strong point guard. Drew II did not play significant minutes last year and as such is a big question mark.

2) Cutting down on turnovers: From memory, I believe Carolina had something like 20 turnovers in the exhibition against Belmont Abbey. That’s unacceptable. UNC fans have been spoiled by the likes of Ty Lawson, who seemingly never gave the ball away. The turnovers didn’t just come from Larry Drew II, who dished out eight dimes to his three turnovers, however, they were spread out over the team. The whole group needs to focus on taking care of the basketball.

3) Post play: It’s what should be the Heels’ strength this year, so let’s see it in action, eh?!

It’s November 8, and I’m on page 160. That’s 131 pages from a week ago. In fairness, I’ve had an incredibly busy last few days with freelance stuff and studying HTML + CSS and, well, drinking.

A few thoughts (SPOILER ALERT)

I dug the section on Isiah Thomas and The Secret. I feel bad for Isiah in a couple ways. He’s known to an entire generation of younger sports fans as an aloof, ego-centric mess after completely tanking with the Knicks. (And some people might remember the scalding Sports Illustrated story almost a decade ago about how Isiah blew up the CBA.)

What people don’t realize is the guy was not just a great player but also a decent judge of talent. Remember, he drafted Tracy McGrady, Damon Stoudemire (a very solid PG for seven or eight years) and Marcus Camby (struggled out of the gate but became a dominant rebounder and shot blocker) when he was with the Raptors. And he chose, among others, Trevor Ariza during his Knicks tenure. A lot of people forget about that pick, since Ariza’s Knicks career was overshadowed by Larry Brown’s cantankerous handling of young’ns, which resulted in Ariza getting traded to Orlando.

Anyway, Thomas also was a great player. He’s probably top 25 at least, maybe top 20. I haven’t made it to Simmons’ top 100 player rankings, which I’m assuming is somewhere in the 500s. But Thomas was one of the seven or eight most important NBA players during the ’80s, the league’s Golden Age, and he deserves the proper recognition for being such an incredible player and teammate. (Though not an respectable opponent, as his walking out on the Bulls in ‘91 without shaking hands and myriad of other slimey tactics should have forewarned people with how poorly he would work as an executive. Because, you know, you have to actually communicate and get along well enoughwith people to get stuff done at that level.)

I plenty more thoughts but that’s enough for now. More along the way.

Perhaps it’s me but there has to be something extremely wrong in the world of sports when once a great player is said to be disliked so much by the peers of his era. The reason I say this , is having read an article in today’s edition of the online edition , sports section of Los Angeles Daily News – that it has me wondering what in God’s name could’ve brought about such a chilling relationship between two former greats of the NBA , in Earvin ‘Magic’ Johnson and Isiah Thomas.

The cover the book which is soon to be released entitled ‘When The Game Was Ours’. The book details the rivalry and friendship that grew out of the relationship between Larry Bird and Magic Johnson from their college days through to their epic rivalriy in the NBA. The book written by Bird and Johnson in conjunction with Jackie Mullan , details also the fractured relationship that came about between Johnson and Isiah Thomas. picture appears courtesy of ap/photos ……

Egos asides , history tells us that these two players were amongst the greatest to have played the game of basketball in the NBA. And with both having climbed the game’s ultimate pinnacle, each having won an NBA title. There’s not much more that can really be said about these two superstars of the game. Other than the fact, that theirs is very much a fractured relationship. Perhaps built out of greed , envy and maybe a combination of the two ? But to have Magic tell it , this all surrounded his being diagnosed with HIV in 1991.Though it didn’t immediately bring an end to Johnson’s professional career. It did had some people questioning whether or not it was appropriate for him to still be on the basketball court playing the game.

Johnson and Thomas seen here in public ,exchanging a few pleasantries at some point in 2004. picture appears courtesy of ap/afp/photo/ James Richards …………

And the premise behind much of Johnson’s wrath and disdain laid in the fact that , he didn’t think it right that Thomas should’ve been asking others or even questioning his sexuality as he puts it. Much of the nineties hiv/aids was primarily viewed as a gay affliction , most notably amongst homosexual males. But there was a preponderance to suggest that it was also being transferred intravenously through the sharing of dirty needles through overt drug use. And it was in fact spreading amongst the hetero sexual community as well as being on the rise with the intravenous drug users. Johnson for his part, acknowledged that he caught the virus through having unprotected sex with numerous females other than his wife over the years of his playing basketball ,professionally. Which begs the question who’s really the victim here ? Magic Johnson or his wife and family ?

The US Dream Team from the 1992 US men’s Olympic basketball competition of that year. They would defeat Croatia in a memorable final 117-85 to take home the gold medal in the competition. Their average margin of victory throughout the tournament was 35 points per game. And it’s arguably understandable why 12 players on the roster are amongst the 50 greatest players in NBA history. The roster for the Dream Team from left to right back row , Patrick Ewing, Earvin Johnson, David Robinson, 2nd row , Christian Laettner, Karl Malone, third row , Larry Bird, Michael Jordan, coach Chuck Daly, Charles Barkley and Chris Mullin . Front row , Scottie Pippen, John Stockton and finally Clyde Drexler . picture appears courtesy of reuters/ Alexander Hutchinson ………….

The repercussion of this all was , albeit a maneuver which Johnson fully acknowledged he engineered- was to make sure that Thomas was never going to be a part of the original ‘Dream Team’ for the 1992 Olympics held in Barcelona , Spain. The team coached by the late Chuck Daly. A team, that was filled at the time , with a litany of NBA All Stars, with the exception a young college player by the name of Christian Laettner. The lone college player on the roster and a member of the Duke University (Blue Devils) who repeated that same year as NCAA champions. It’s arguable whether or not Johnson held that much sway as to the makeup of the roster at the time. But I certainly think that Thomas as a player wasn’t at all liked by certain members of that team, at the time. As to whether or not Magic Johnson can lay claim that much of this was because of him with regard to Thomas was overlooked for the team. One can really only speculate on the subject. If anything it may well be Johnson wanting to interject himself and his ego into the matter.

Lakers great Magic Johnson expected strong reaction from Isiah Thomas regarding book

By Tom Hoffarth, Staff Writer

NBA: Lakers great says about long-time friend, `We both move on and keep going.’

If Magic Johnson’s fractured friendship with Isiah Thomas suffers further collateral damage by a book released this week, there doesn’t seem to be much movement for any kissing and making up in the near future.

In “When The Game Was Ours,” a book coming out Wednesday co-authored by Johnson and Larry Bird to recount their basketball rivalry- turned-brotherhood starting 30 years ago, a few egos have been stepped on when diverting to other sidelights.

Johnson writes how more than miffed he was that Thomas began asking people close to both of them whether Johnson was gay after it was revealed he had HIV in 1991. He adds that he helped orchestrate blackballing the Detroit Pistons’ All-Star guard from being picked for the 1992 U.S. Olympic “Dream Team.”

When book excerpts came out last week on SI.com, Thomas, the former Detroit Pistons All-Star guard who just took over as head coach at Florida International University, responded: “I’m really hurt, and I really feel taken advantage of for all these years. I’m totally blindsided by this. …

“I didn’t know he felt this way … What most people don’t know is, before Magic had HIV, my brother had HIV. My brother died of HIV, AIDS, drug abuse. So I knew way more about the disease, because I was living with it in my house.”

Johnson said Monday he wasn’t surprised by Thomas’ reaction to the book.

“No surprise, that’s just a part of life,” Johnson said. “Isiah’s got to worry now about his Florida team and his life going on, and I’ve got to worry about my businesses. We both move on and keep going.”

Johnson’s and Thomas’ career paths after basketball have diverged and intersected along the way. Though not at the same time, in terms of their professional accomplishments. Both have tried their hands at coaching. Without much undue success to be shown in terms of success. Johnson for his part even had a failed late night talk show for that matter. Of which, those of us who might have been watching, must have felt that the Fox network either made a genuine mistake or they completely overestimated Magic’s appeal to a television audience. The show itself came, and went with the blink of an eye. It was indeed terrible ! As Johnson’s command of the English language and its vernacular bordered on being awful to say the very least. He has however , kept himself involved in the game behind the scenes as minority stakeholder in the Los Angeles Lakers’ franchise. And at the same time he’s become a wealthy entrepreneur in a wide range of diverse businesses. Building himself an accumulated wealth said to be in the hundreds of millions of dollars. His vast business interests has over 7,000 people in its employ and generates in excess of $2 billion dollars a year in gross revenues. Much of that has brought a great deal of investment to the inner cities blighted urban decay and crime.

<img src="http://tophatal.wordpress.com/files/2009/11/johnson-seen-here-with-his-family-his-wife-cookie-and-children-son-ej-and-daughter-elisa.jpg" alt="Johnson seen here with hjs family , his wife Cookie pictured next him along with his son EJ , 17 and daughter Elisa 14.

But it’d also be remiss not to mention his philanthropic efforts through his Magic Johnson Foundation . Set up in part to educate about aids awareness and to assist those in some way afflicted by the disease. The foundation also gives out scholarships to needy students and it also assist in community aid programs. Johnson by his own volition has gone out to set an example for others to follow.

Thomas after his stint as a coach with the Indiana Pacers. He then was tapped to take over the woefully inept New York Knicks. He was installed as the team’s general manager. And his relationship with the then coach , Larry Brown , can be best described of covering the gamut from being contentious to downright asinine and comical. Brown’s own dismissal wasn’t at all totally unexpected. But what transpired next with Thomas installing himself as the coach. Well , let’s just say that everything from thereon in for the Knicks went downhill. What Thomas brought to the Knicks as a coach, is akin to Paris Hilton being asked to teach a class in quantum physics. The one certainty that we know is that the exercise is doomed for disaster. And the same can be said for the ‘Isiah Thomas’ experiment in New York.

The fans railed on Thomas for his roster moves but even more so for the lack of competitiveness shown by the team . And much of this transpired under the watchful eye of the Knicks’ corporate parent Cablevision Systems . Which is in turn owned by the Dolan family . Money was of no object for the NBA’s wealthiest franchise in terms of value. But when it came to showing common sense and due diligence. Well, none of that was forthcoming from either party involved . In this case that would be James Dolan and Isiah Thomas. The team has been a model of inconsistency under Thomas’ reign and when added to the fact he and the organization were embroiled in a sexual harassment and wrongful termination suit. It only added to comedy of errors that as unraveling with the Knicks’ organization. If nothing else, one could only watch from afar and wonder what was about to happen next. Needless to say that the writing was on the wall once James Dolan saw that ‘enough was enough’ and that the idiocy had to be stopped in its tracks.

Dolan initially moved Thomas into a consultancy position within the Knicks’ organization and then brought in Donnie Walsh to oversee the player personnel activity within the New York Knicks as VP and Head of Basketball Operations. At a later date they sought out and hired former Phoenix Suns‘ coach Mike D’Antoni .

Knowing that his role was ever diminishing, Thomas left the organization citing that he was seeking out fresh business opportunities. Little did we know that those opportunities would be as a coach within the collegiate ranks of basketball. He found himself being hired by Florida International University (FIU-Panthers). He states, ….. ‘ that it’s been a life long ambition of mine to give back to the college student athlete and to enhance their lives as not only students but also as outstanding citizens as well ‘. A very commendable thought indeed, on his part ! As to whether or Isiah can make a success of it as basketball coach within the collegiate ranks. It remains to be seen but certainly he can’t do much worse than in his tenure with the New York Knicks . Or can he ?

To say Isiah Thomas has always had a crippling lack of likability could be one of the world’s

To say Isiah Thomas has always had a crippling lack of likability could be one of the world’s greatest understatements. As heartwarming as his rise from the Chicago ‘hood to one of the best players in NBA history was, there’s always been the backstories, the tales from behind the scenes that questioned his motivations and character. The latest, exposed in the new book When the Game Was Ours regarding his relationship with one-time close friend Magic Johnson, come as little surprise. After years of rumours, Magic finally took public issue with Isiah’s allegedly questioning Johnson’s sexual orientation in the days after he was diagnosed HIV-positive in 1991.

Veteran Boston sportswriter Jackie MacMullan, who co-authored the book with Magic and Larry Bird, appeared on ESPN’s Pardon The Interruption this week, and pointed out just how special the hell was that Johnson went through in those early days of the AIDS scare. Players on his own team were apparently afraid to play pickup or shootaround with him, let alone hug him. To have one of his best friends talking behind his back in a league where everybody talks to each other might explain why Magic didn’t help Zeke’s case with the original Dream Team. Conventional wisdom up until now said it was Michael Jordan – and Michael Jordan only – that kept Thomas off that squad, which was notable seeing as it was headed by Thomas’ own pro coach, Chuck Daly. I remember arguing this as a kid back in ‘92, and my cousin was adamant that the only reason Christian Laettner made the squad was because USA Basketball wanted another white guy. Instead, Isiah got to come Toronto for the World Championships in ‘94 and apparently impressed fellow Indiana alum John Bitove enough to offer him the GM job of a certain expansion team named in the marketing wake of Barney and Jurassic Park.

Thomas is on record saying he is “hurt” by Johnson’s allegations, but common logic points to him – as it historically has – as being his own worst enemy. But it’s also worth noting that the reason Magic abandoned his first NBA comeback bid in the fall of ‘92 was players like Karl Malone questioning the safety factors of playing against an HIV-positive player.

As a rabid fan of 1980s NBA basketball, I was saddened to read last week that the friendship between Magic Johnson and Isiah Thomas has evaporated and that Johnson has devoted a portion of his latest book “When the Game was Ours,” written with Larry Bird, to trash Thomas.

Once he learned about the book, Thomas simply said he had no idea that Johnson felt that way. However, even though Thomas has taken the high road, it’s still being reported as him “feuding” with Johnson. I can’t help but feel that Thomas’ fate was sealed in 1987, when he made the comment that Larry Bird “is a very, very good basketball player. He’s an exceptional talent…” before adding, “but I have to agree with [Dennis] Rodman. If he were black, he’d be just another good guy”.

That was 1987, the era of Reagonomics. For a black athlete to call America’s racial double standard into question back then took a degree of courage. Prior to that statement, Thomas was viewed as a golden boy in the same way that Larry Bird, Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan were. After that statement, however, he was never seen in the same light again.

Well it’s that time of year once again, where the round ball game comes into play. The NBA season is now upon us folks and though as far as I’m concerned it doesn’t really get into stride until the season gets into the meat of its schedule -roundabout Christmas. By then, we’ll be seeing how a number of teams will have played themselves into some sort of rhythm. And perhaps not , as the case maybe !

<img src="http://tophatal.wordpress.com/files/2009/10/charles-barkley-sidline-at-an-nba-game.jpg" alt="Former NBA great, turned NBA broadcast analyst , Charles Barkley , seen here courtside at the T-Mobile Rookie Youth Jam part of the 2008 NBA All Star Weekend that took place at the New Orleans Arena , New Orleans, Louisiana,. Barkley recently stated that he'd like to take an executive role as the GM of an NBA franchise. Something that I for one can't necessarily see Barkley doing at this juncture. He's got far too comfortable a position behind the desk at TNT covering the NBA with his usual forthright and deprecating analysis. picture appears courtesy nbae/getty images/ Andrew D.

Former NBA great ,turned TNT NBA broadcast analyst , Charles Barkley seen here at the T-Mobile Rookie Youth Jam, part of the 2008 NBA All Star Weekend that took place at the New Orleans Arena , New Orleans , Louisiana,. Barkley recently stated that he’d like to an executive role as the GM of an NBA franchise.
And for me the coverage of the game can only be enhanced by the spirited banter of former NBA great and Hall of Famer, Charles Barkley. What he brings to the table is honest to goodness forthright analysis , tinged with sometimes his acerbic wit and devil may care attitude. He just puts it out there and tells it like it is. And most of all he doesn’t care who he offends for that matter. Fans of the game either hate him , or they simply love him. There are no in betweens when it comes to ‘Sir Charles’ . The TNT coverage of the game is amongst the very best that there is on offer and that’s inclusive of the NBA’s (NBA Tv) own cable broadcast coverage of the sport.

The season kicks off tonight with a double header feature of games scheduled to start with an eagerly anticipated match-up between the Boston Celtics , who’ll be taking on the Cleveland Cavaliers. The other game on tap will feature the defending NBA champions , the Los Angeles Lakers , taking on their neighbor, the Los Angeles Clippers . Unfortunately, for fans of the Clippers they will not be afforded the privilege of seeing the NBA #1 draft pick , Blake Griffin. The player injured himself in practice and will be sidelined for anywhere between four to six weeks , by all estimates. It’s hoped that his recovery will be a speedy one and that there’ll be no long lasting or lingering effects from his injury (a cracked patella [broken kneecap]).

Barkley wants his shot at being a general manager

By Brian Mahoney , AP Basketball Writer

NEW YORK (AP)—Charles Barkley thinks he can do better than some of the general managers he criticizes on TV.

The Hall of Fame player and TNT analyst said Monday he’d like his chance to run an NBA team, though he’s in no rush because he’d want the right job.

“I think that it’d be fun to try to build my own team,” Barkley said at a luncheon, joined by studio partners Kenny Smith and Ernie Johnson. “We talk about it all the time. Sometimes we say, ‘What is that guy doing? Why did he draft that guy? Why did he make a trade for that guy?’

“Some of these guys have done a bad job, plain and simple.”

Barkley was critical of the Minnesota Timberwolves, who under new team president David Kahn took point guards with the Nos. 5-6 picks in the draft, then signed point guard Ramon Sessions(notes) in free agency. He compared the Wolves’ draft strategy to when the Detroit Lions kept spending high draft picks on wide receivers.

The 46-year-old Barkley planned to do TV for only a couple of years, but is now in his 10th season with TNT. He’s in no hurry to leave for a team executive job that opened up, because some of them wouldn’t give him an opportunity to be successful.

“Every job ain’t a good job,” said Barkley, who said he wouldn’t take any position unless he was given complete control of basketball decisions, because some owners aren’t interested in winning.

Smith also is interested and has interviewed for some positions. He doesn’t think he or Barkley are hurt by not having previous experience working for a team.

“Every day you can hear what we say about your team, what your team is. You know our philosophy. If you follow basketball, it’s not like you don’t know Charles and myself. You can’t not know us and you can’t not know how we think,” Smith said. “We’re just in a unique situation where we’re interviewed every night.”

Barkley has seen some of his contemporaries try and fail as team executives. Isiah Thomas was fired after a horrible tenure running the New York Knicks, and even Michael Jordan, Barkley’s good friend, is regularly criticized for his inability to build a winner in Washington and Charlotte.

Now as an erstwhile fan of the NBA and a fervent supporter of the San Antonio Spurs . I can only hope, that much of Charles’ criticism won’t be directly targeted towards by beloved Spurs. He’s been known to let rip even when it’s not been justified . But such are the wiles of Barkley , that even he can’t be held in check by his bosses at TNT . And that’s no doubt what the vast majority of NBA fans love about him from the get-go.
The thought of Barkley leaving the broadcast booth to be behind the desk dealing with the day to day operations of an NBA franchise. Though on the face it – it may well appear to be ghastly. There’s no reason to believe that he couldn’t prove to be a success in that particular endeavor. Albeit , that we’ve seen the failures of such individuals , as Michael Jordan , Isiah Thomas and Elgin Baylor. All of whom at one time or another were in charge of an NBA franchise as a general manager , head of the player personnel operations. Their failures have been of such monumental proportions . That it left the respective franchises that they oversaw in almost irretrievable situation. So much so, that it has taken them in some cases almost a decade to attain some semblance of normalcy within those respective organizations. So for now for the likes of the Washington Wizards, New York Knicks and Los Angeles Clippers , they can be thankful that a lesson has been sorely learned.

Of this though we’re sure , for LeBron James and Shaquille O’Neal , this will be a make or break season as to how the Cleveland Cavaliers will fare. Perhaps, no other franchise is under as much pressure as the Cavaliers. And that’s including the Los Angeles Lakers, as the defending NBA champions. O’Neal , was brought in to the franchise, to provide that added leadership and prominent offensive presence. That is what was felt the team was lacking. As to whether or not, O’Neal can regain the form of old , remains to be seen. But this much is sure , failure by the Cavaliers to at least make the NBA Finals and raise the Larry O’Brien Trophy . And Cleveland might as well start to pay homage to LeBron James , as he heads out for pastures new. His remaining with the franchise, is predicated upon them winning the NBA title. Anything short of that, is absolutely meaningless for him and his overall ambitions as a player, at this stage of his career.

History has shown us recently, that it’s hard to successfully defend an NBA title. And for the Lakers it will prove to be no different. With the loss of Trevor Ariza through free agency ,with him landing with the Houston Rockets . Who’d have thought it possible that Ron Artest would’ve ended up in a Lakers’ uniform ? Now the question has got to be , will he be more of an attraction , rather than a distraction ? Granted , his stay with the Rockets proved to be fruitful. Where he played alongside Aaron Brooks , and proved that he’d matured into a leader and a teammate on their roster that was hampered by injuries to Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady – as they made the playoffs last season. Now comes the real task for Artest, can he defer to the likes of Kobe Bryant , Pau Gasol and in all likelihood Andrew Bynum ? He’ll after all be no more than their fourth or fifth scoring option , if that !

Rudy Fernandez (5) of the Portland Trailblazers goes up for the layup as he evades Chuck Hayes (44) , in the game played against the Houston Rockets , in the teams’ season opener played at the Rose Garden Arena , Portland , Oregon. The Trailblazers would go on to defeat the Rockets 96-87 . picture appears courtesy of nbae/getty images/ Thomas Oliver ………………..

And most certainly Lakers’ coach , Phil Jackson ,will be watching diligently, as Artest acclimatizes himself with his new teammates. For the Lakers’ fans also, they’ll be hoping to see their team successfully defend their title. As it is, they merely see the opponents in the Eastern Conference , as nothing more than cannon fodder. Especially in light of the ease with which they dispatched the Orlando Magic last season. However, with the likes of the Boston Celtics, the Magic to name but a few, making acquisitions to bolster their rosters. It will be interesting to see how many of the Eastern Conference’s top teams fare over the course of this upcoming season. The Celtics have added another aging veteran in Rasheed Wallace , to provide them with depth. And the Magic, meanwhile, have added Vince Carter to provide them with some much needed offense. Unfortunately, the loss of Hedo Turkoglu for the Orlando Magic, might prove to be too much to bear. But if anything the Magic’s coach, Stan Van Gundy will be able to make do , with the talent made available to him.

The NBA and in particular the game’s commissioner , David Stern will no doubt be pinning his hopes that the league’s stars will be at the top of their game. And in particular the young rookies that will be taking their first steps on the professional basketball stage. But paramount to this all, will be if there is a far more entertaining product placed on the court this season. In light of the economic turmoil that the country now faces and the fact that the erstwhile NBA fans may not be all too willing to pay overly inflated prices for a product that at times has been about as entertaining as watching an episode of ‘Jon & Kate Plus 8′. Well, you can see why it is that the fans have at times become less approving of the game.

For Charles Barkley and his post broadcast career, I’m of the opinion that I would rather see him behind the desk giving us his succinct observations on the game . Or him court-side having a great deal of fun at the expense of the players, coaches and fans. Barkley being an NBA General Manager ? Let’s just say that on the face of it , the tone and reverence sought just wouldn’t be there. Could you imagine Charles and a player , much less a coach having a spat over the the productivity on the basketball court ? You know one way or another that there would definitely be hell to pay . And there’s no telling what may well happen between him and his antagonist. Suffice to say, the aftermath of it all wouldn’t be pretty !

From the week of Oct. 18-24 Sports: The Phillies will face off with the Yankees for the World Series

From the week of Oct. 18-24

Sports: The Phillies will face off with the Yankees for the World Series, which begins Wednesday night. The Yankees will return to the Fall Classic for the first time since 2003, while the Phillies are looking to repeat. The Yankees clinched a birth in the World Series Sunday night after defeating the Angels 5-2 in Game 6.

Our Take: It should be an exciting series, although having both teams based on the east coast may diminish west coast interest. It will be good for media travel as the average distance between opponents in the past 20 years has been 1,040 miles. Both teams have a strong lineup and there is sure to be a lot of long balls, which should attract fans.

Entertainment: The new Meadowlands Stadium, which will host both the New York Giants and Jets, will open next year with a show by Jon Bon Jovi. The shows set for April 26 and 27 will conclude the tour for the band’s new album, Circle. MTV’s Kyle Anderson makes a tongue-in-cheek pitch to have Bon Jovi and other New Jersey icon Bruce Springsteen team up to buy the naming rights of the stadium, with suggestions such as “Born to Runaway Stadium” or “Blaze of Glory Days Pavillion.”

Our Take: Bon Jovi is a predictable, but solid choice to christen the new stadium. The show will draw thousands of fans, as usual, but this time there is the added value of being one of the first to check out the $1.6 billion site that will replace Giants Stadium. The naming rights for the stadium could be a great investment for a corporation since the stadium is only the third of five major arenas in the New York metropolitan area to offer such a sponsorship, along with the Mets’ Citi Field and the Devils’ Prudential Center.

Quote: “I wish he would have had the courage to say this stuff to me face to face, as opposed to writing it in some damn book to sell and he can make money off it.” –Isiah Thomas, about Magic Johnson’s upcoming book When The Game Was Ours

Our Take: The Thomas-Johnson drama is a PR gold mine. The more controversy that unfolds over the book and the two hoops stars’ relationship, the faster the book will fly off the shelves. Johnson goes into detail about the exile of Thomas from the 1992 Olympic team, as well as allegations over statements made by Thomas regarding Johnson’s HIV diagnosis. It should make for an interesting read when the book is released Nov. 4.

Oddity: Not only has Eric Mangini lost the favor of Jets fans, but he was the victim of some harsh criticism from the WWR wrestler known as “The Miz.” Not impressed with the Browns performance thus far this season, The Miz called out the coach for his alleged ineptitude in coaching the team, designating Cleveland “the new Lions”.

Our Take: This is not the kind of publicity Mangini wants after his failed attempt in New York. Cleveland is a bad team and it’s going to take time to turn it around, but it is uncertain that Mangini will have the time he needs if the team doesn’t start showing improvement soon. The more outrageous comments made by The Miz were tempered by his good observation that the Browns’ offensive line needs to protect better if Cleveland wants to see Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn play better.

Number: 10

Our Take: Nike+ held the Nike+ Human Race on Friday and Saturday. The race was started in three different locations across the country: New York City, Ohio State University, and the University of Southern California. Participants in the 10k will have a chance to win $10k if they were able to successfully reach all kiosk locations. Each race is also connected with a charity. New York is running for Team in Training NYC Chapter, Students First, Students Now at Ohio State, and USC will race for Coach Pete Carroll’s A Better LA. This is a creative idea to get people to use the company’s Nike+ technology. Advertising for the event was done partly through Facebook. New York’s race had 1,104 confirmed guests Thursday night.
