Phuket is the largest island in Thailand, the land area is of around 543 sqm- which is about the size of Singapore with a population at the current standing of approximately 320,000 people. It is thought that they lived there until they were forced out by tin miners in the mid-nineteenth century.

Pirates of Phuket

The coastal areas of Phuket were populated with the nomadic seafaring tribe called the Chao Nam. These were a small but sturdy race who were expert sailors and traditionally travelled from cove to cove feeding on shell fish, consuming all and then moving on. They were according to the first Europeans to arrive, pirates who robbed and stole and took slaves for transportation to Indonesia. It is said that tin mining was slow to develop here because of the pirate’s fierce reputation.

A Similan Island is where you want to go if you want to dive in Thailand. The Similan Island chain is a group of nine islands that are located off the Southern coast of Thailand and are known for being the best places for deep sea diving in Asia
.
The Similan Island chain is actually now a national park that was established in Thailand in 1982. If you want to got to any of these nine islands, you can visit by boat. There are many boat rides available to the islands from Phuket Island as well as the mainland of Thailand.

Although the area is known for the many diving sites where diving enthusiasts visit each year, it also boasts some of the most beautiful tropical foliage in Thailand and is the home for much wildlife that is native to this area. Many of the people who visit the Similan Island go for the scenery such as waterfalls, tropical gardens and rare bird life.

The largest island of the Similan Island chain is Ko Similan. Ko Similan has some of the most beautiful underwater rocks and coral reefs in the world. In addition to diving, people visit this island for snorkeling as there are sites to be seen under the water that cannot be viewed anywhere else in the world.
Those who want to lounge on the beach can do so at Ko Huyong which has the largest beach in the Similan Island chain. This beach is known for that where the giant sea turtles migrate each year to lay their eggs. The eggs are protected by the park officials, but visitors can view these eggs if they visit in the fall.

There are two different types of deep sea diving practiced at the Similan Island National Park. They consist of East side diving which gives you a view of coral reefs and West side diving that has large underwater rocks and swim through tunnels. The most famous East side dive site in the Similan Island chain is East of Eden which is located just off of the seventh island.
While two of the larger islands are named, most of the islands just go by numbers. The natives know them as “island seven” or “island four.”

The most famous West side dive site in the island chain is Elephant Head Rock. Elephant Head Rock is also the name of one of the oldest diving shops that is located in Phuket Island. To actually see whale sharks while diving, you will have to go to Richelieu Rock which is also part of the Similan Island chain. Many people feel that this is the ultimate deep sea diving spot in the world as, in addition to the whale sharks, other underwater life is abundant in this area.
You do not have to be a diving enthusiasts, however, to appreciate the Similan Island chain. When on holiday in Thailand, make sure that you a day to explore this beautiful chain of islands located off the southern tip of Thailand.

If you come and visit us, there are several places you can´t miss. Lekeitio is one of them. I spent several childhood and adolescence summers there, with my family (those long summers that started in June and ended by mid September, adapting to school holidays), so it´s a special town to me.

Lekeitio is on the way from Bilbao to San Sebastián, on the very scenic coastal road. It takes about one hour by car to get there from Bilbao, driving on a very curvy road (those that get sick on cars, take your precautions before). They´ve just opened the bypass approaching Lekeitio, so now it´s more accessible.

This is a fishing village, or maybe I should say “still”. The number of fishing boats is rapidly decreasing, and pretty soon this beautiful village will have to find other ways of earning an income. There are three beaches, Isuntza, Karraspio and La Salvaje. There´s an island that is linked to the continent by a wall, that disappears under the water with high tide (on the intro of this web you can see an overview of the town, www.lekeitio.com). There´s a XV century beautiful gothic church, Asunción de Santa María, with an incredible altarpiece. There are great festivals in September, 8 incredible days – not to forget Goose Day, when they hung dead gooses from a a rope on the port (used to be alive) and people on boats hung from their neck trying to break them, while being pulled and pushed up and down in the water.

Still very much untouched by tourism, this town keeps its authenticity and it´s a real pleasure to walk along the narrow streets where fishermen live, have some pintxos at its bars and enjoy the awesome views. And have the daily menu at the Hostal de la Emperatriz (also a spa and a hotel), overviewing the town, the beach, the sea and the island. Or sleep at Palacio Zubieta, paradise of tranquility…

Darayonan is a Cuyonon word that means a place to stay. The lodge is situated in a residential part of Coron town, strategically located along the National Highway. From the lodge’s interior decorations to the food being served for each meal. He personally goes over every little details right before being served or handed over to the guests. We stayed here for 4 days and 3 nights; and it was a part of the overwhelming positive experiences that I have had during my stay in Coron, Palawan.

The place is clean all the time! They see to it that the rooms and private comfort rooms get cleaned everyday during your stay. They also make sure that the entire lodge is spic and span all throughout the day. I have never seen any litter at all in my entire stay.

The facilities in this lodge pass the normal standards of travellers: hot and cold shower, all air-conditioned rooms, centralized water system. It’s like you never left home at all. I’ve had a comfortable stay at this lodge.

It’s also probably the only lodge that includes breakfast for two along with the daily room charge. And what’s more, drinking water and coffee is unlimited, no extra charge. I should say that staying at Darayonan is really a value for your money.

I read Matt’s post about the danger of trash to animals and I am definitely looking forward to the discussion we will have in his class on Tuesday. But before that, I will present some initial thoughts regarding Matt’s main topic of discussion, “If we believe in evolution, survival of the fittest, and that extinction is a natural part of life, then why do we feel the need to ‘save’ endangered species.” Firstly, I think there is a dichotomy between those who think that extinction is natural and those who feel the need to save endangered species. Therefore, “we” should be better specified. So from now on, I shall use “we” for those who want to save endangered animals.

Some might consider the people who want to save endangered animals as “good” and people who will not step into action due to the belief in the naturalness of extinction as “bad”. But I shall state otherwise. Those who want to save the animals are the ones who want to transcend nature. Similar to the popular idea of cheating death, these people hope of cheating nature’s principles of evolution and extinction. I found a TV show on Animal Planet called Orangutan Island, in which people are trying to save the endangered Orangutans by protecting them and giving them homes. The title of Season 2’s Episode 1 is “Cheating Extinction,” which pertains quite well to our discussion. The regular viewer would think that the Orangutans are cheating extinction, but actually we are the ones cheating extinction. Not our extinction, but the Orangutan’s extinction. So now, we play a key role in the fate of other animals. Quite a weighty responsibility, isn’t it? Of course. Attempting to invalidate nature’s inherent laws by replacing it with human power is no small deal.

Min politiska syn är att samhällets strukturer skall förändras stegvis mot en effektiv förvaltning och ge möjlighet till valfrihet under enskilt ansvar.

Skattepolitik skall alltid resultera i en effektiv användning. Privata samt offentliga monopol måste avskaffas via skärpt lagstiftning. Jag vill föra en rak politik med fokus på resultat.

Jag brinner för ENERGI, MILJÖ, IT och KULTUR.

KANDIDATUR TILL RIKSDAGEN:

•Nya kärnkraftverk i Karlshamn (3 st på 1500 MW), detta ger många arbetstillfällen samt räddar vår basindustri. Ett av dessa nya kärnkraftverk skall användas till enbart produktion av drivmedel (vätgas).
•En ny infrastruktur i form av ”Energibönder” skall införas för att garantera produktion av drivmedel i form av biogas, etanol och metanol från jord- och skogsbruken.
•Nordiskt samarbete med Island för produktion av mineraler och halvfabrikat genom användning av Islands naturliga energikällor.
•Användning av EU:s jordbruksstöd till rökgasrening av äldre förbrännings- och energianläggningar i Europa, stödet kan därefter avvecklas successivt.
•Arbetslinjen skall utvecklas även på längre sikt.
•LAS måste förändras så att nya arbetstillfällen lättare kan skapas, detta bör slopas helt och hållet för små företag och slopas endast för ungdomar i medelstora företag, däremot bör LAS inte ändras för stora företag.
•Pensionering av 40-talister måste forceras så att ungdomar kan bli lärlingar till den som skall pensioneras, med minimilön och där arbetsgivaravgiften slopas för båda under denna övergångsperiod, för att förhindra en ungdomskatastrof.
•Fildelning och internet skall vara fritt, solidariskt finansierat via bredbandsavgifter, fördelat via intresseorganisationer till upphovsrättsägarna och där viss del av bredbandsavgiften blir till ett permanent kulturstöd inom bild, film, musik och litteratur.
•Skärpt parlamentarism i riksdagen så att demokratin förbättras via nytt röstningsförfarande

KANDIDATUR TILL LANDSTINGET:

•Omvandla landstinget till en rent professionell upphandlingsorganisation, med utförsäljning av alla verksamheter (primärvård samt sjukhus) stegvis.
•Försäljning av verksamheter skall endast ske till marknadsvärde så att skattebetalarna får tillbaks de resurser som tillförts en viss verksamhet.
•Forcerad pensionering av äldre medarbetare så att arbetstillfällen skapas inom landstingets alla verksamheter.
•Utöka vårdvalet för att skapa en jämlikare vård. Skärpta garantier och regler för vård inom vårdvalet.
•Gratis tandvård måste medges i ett högt civiliserat samhälle och skall gälla för alla landstingsanställda.
•Satsa på ett utökat samarbete mellan primärvården och sjukhusen, där oftast specialistvården är starkast. Utnyttja därför läkarresureserna vid våra sjukhus i första hand. En annan organisationsmodell måste utarbetas.
•Öka antalet hembesök via primärvården nu när antalet äldre kommer att öka i framtiden.
•Läkarbristen måste hanteras där studenter utomlands erbjuds att slutföra sin utbildning i Sverige samt utökad satsning på läkarutbildningen så att framtida läkarbrist kan hanteras nu. Även Karlstadsmodellen måste analyseras, att anställa utländska läkare.
•Satsning på spårbunden kollektivtrafik i första hand i regionen därefter bussar och nya alternativa bränslen (el, vätgas, biogas, etanol, metanol) för att förbättra miljön.
•Satsa på ett samarbete mellan andra landsting för inhemsk vaccinproduktion så att vi är oberoende av vaccinproduktion inför nya pandemier.
•Krav på öppna källkodssystem och fri programvara inom alla verksamheter.
•Nytt IT-system för uppföljning av vård pga rotationen av läkare i primärvården, detta är jätteviktigt.

KANDIDATUR TILL KOMMUNEN:

•Avskaffa trängselskatten omedelbart som endast kan anses vara smygsocialisering, därefter stoppa projekt ”Förbifart Stockholm” som leder till ännu mer biltrafik i en redan hårt sargad region. Yrkar här på en klimatsmart lösning byggd på ökad kollektivtrafik med alternativa bränslen och en utbyggnad av kapaciteten i T-banan och pendeltåg.
•Omvandla kommunen till en rent professionell upphandlingsorganisation, med utförsäljning av alla tekniska verksamheter i första hand. Försäljning av verksamheter skall endast ske till marknadsvärde.
•Granskning av bidragsfusk skall utföras endast på lokal nivå direkt i verksamheten.
•Forcerad pensionering av äldre medarbetare så att arbetstillfällen skapas inom stadens alla verksamheter.
•Stödja attraktiva satsningar som sätter Stockholm stad på världskartan.
•Effektiva samförläggningar vid grävning i allmän mark så att vi slipper dyrare grävningar och återläggningar inom staden.
•Energieffektiviseringar inom alla verksamheter. Ökad användning av solfångare på stadens fastigheter, dessa sparar uppvärmningskostnader för stadens fastighetsbestånd.
•Uppmuntra till större användning av kraftvärme och sopförbränning, detta förbättrar miljön där metangas och tungmetaller kan minskas.
•Användning av elbilar i stadens tjänst för att förbättra vår miljö, nu när laddstationerna till elbilar byggs ut.
•IT-effektiviseringar med krav på öppna källkodssystem och fri programvara inom alla verksamheter.
•Utökad möjlighet till fritt internet i alla allmänna ytor i staden.
•Satsa på en central IT-förvaltning som ger stordriftsfördelar och minskar stadens kostnader radikalt.

Holiday’s…. mere mention of the word leaves a smile on the face and a sparkle in the eyes. All of us want to go away for a while from our routine mundane demanding lives. We want to spend some quality time with our loved ones, ourselves and above all with nature. But the million-dollar question is where to holiday?

Let me take you to a new holiday destination, which I am sure you have not visited yet. Elba island is an Italian island located in the Tuscan Archipelago. Sun, sea, beaches and a memorable holiday trip are guaranteed here. The island that is situated about 10km from the mainland can be accessed by a ferry, taking about an hour’s time. Elba is an island that welcomes you with a warm smile that’s all embracing…the vast seas, the beautiful beaches, and the green countryside all welcome you to the island. Elba Island is sure to thrill you with its natural beautiful landscapes and tourist spots. The climate here is typical as like of most marine climates. You can look forward to a mild weather here even during the winter season. Rains here are very scarce.

Rocky coastlines, cliffs, sandy beaches, beaches with pebble stones, sunny windy shorelines, and green pastures of land are all going to give you a beautiful sight that you are bound to remember for ages. The beaches of Elba are many and each one is unique in itself. On one hand you may see long golden beaches, on the other you may come across a beautiful beach of black sand. Beaches with tiny stones, those with white pebbles are a rare sight that is common here on Elba Island. Cliffs of smooth granite rocks, crystal clear seas, luxurious hilltops with fragrant sweet smelling flowers, woods with trees that have stood for ages, small villages by the sea or on the ridges, all make a spectacular sight.

Apart from its natural bewitching beauty Elba is a paradise for all those who enjoy and love nature sports. The island of Elba offers a variety of memories for the tourists. Trekking, mountain biking, squab diving, windsurfing, sailing, fishing, Para-gliding, golf are some of the adventure sports you can look forward to.

The holiday to Elba islands would be incomplete without getting a taste of their cuisine. The flavors of the cuisines here are exotic. You can get a good catch here that smells and tastes good too…I meant the fish it’s excellent and worth trying. And to give you a little high the island offers an array of fine wines red, white and sweet dessert wines are a must have.

Shopping can be a wonderful activity when one is relaxed and has leisure time. A holiday without some local shopping is not complete. Elba Island has a lot to offer on this front too. You can find typical Elba hand made products that will make for interesting souvenir. Mineral shops, shops selling antiques, boutiques, souvenir stalls will all help you find that special thing that you would want to take back home from Elba island.

British newspaper readers have become accustomed to reading travel articles extolling the virtues of Majorca, and why it is the most popular holiday destination for European holidaymakers each summer.

Majorca, or as it is often known as Mallorca, is a holiday island that is as private or public as a tourist wants it to be, and as cosmpolitan as Magaluf or as quiet and pristine as Deia.

Late and all night parties, budget hotels and cheap flights are all on the same island as some of the best hotels in the world such as La Residencia in Deia, and on the same island that has the all night drinking as cycle trails, mountains and traditional Spanish countryside that makes Majorca special for so many tourists – it has one of the highest numbers of returning holidaymakers among the popular holiday destinations in Europe.

But it is economic circumstances rather than the appeal of the island that could see Majorca holidays be relegated from the top spot for European vacations, and see Turkey emerge as the new favourite this year.

A combination of a weak pound for British tourists visiting for Majorca holidays where the Euro is used, making a trip some ten per cent more expensive than for the same time last year, and a looming recession for the UK economy has caused both holiday makers and tour operators to look at alternatives outside the Eurozone to offer value for money family holidays this year.

And it’s not just Turkey that has benefitted from the Euro’s high value as British tourists look elsewhere this year – Florida has seen an upsurge while the pound was buying two dollars, and Egypt too has proved popular.

Majorca was one of the first ever holiday destinations in the world to actively market itself, and has successfully been attracting holidaymakers for over a hundred years now, so if it does slip from the number one position it won’t be down to lack of experience or committment from the island’s tourist authorities.

And low cost airlines from around Europe have enabled Majorca holidays to be more accessible today than ever before, allowing three day as well week and two week holidays to be taken more than once a year for those who rate Majorca as their first choice of holiday destination.

The property market on the island has benefitted too from cheap flights to Majorca, with low prices and a choice of departure times from regional airports, owning a villa or apartment allows rental income, but also for the owners to enjoy their property on several occasions throughout the year.

There’s a diversity about Majorca that enables the island to attract high numbers of holidaymakers while at the same time drawing the upmarket tourist and celebrities who can find the peace and quiet they want in wonderful surroundings at the same time that others are enjoying a package holiday deal from one of the major tour operators along with tens of thousands of others in the towns and resorts.

Majorca has hundreds of hotel options to choose from, but probably the best for service, standards and luxury is the La Residencia, which is often quoted in the national newspapers in Europe as one of the best hotels in Majorca. Located in Deia, home village to many celebrities, the hotel offers the best of Majorca, close to both the mountains and the Mediterranean.

It’s probably not a question of if Majorca will return as a favourite holidays destination for British, German and other European tourists who make up the vast majority of the island’s visitors, but a question of when – and if the Euro slips in strength in the coming months the British could be booking for a holiday in Majorca for 2009.

Majorca – or Mallorca – will be hoping the British currency revitalises in the coming months!

Una vez acabada la “sesión fotográfica” en la zona de los pseudocráteres, nos dirigimos a la cascada de Godafoss.

Allí nos encontramos con dos parejas, una catalana y otra euskera que viajaban juntas en sendas autocaravanas (embarcaron en Dinamarca si no recuerdo mal) muy majas. Desde aquí si me leen (nos encontramos en agosto de 2009), un abrazo fuerte!.

Luego nos dirijimos a Akureyri, capital del norte donde pasamos la noche en una “granja”.

La siguiente foto es la de la iglesia al anochecer.

Curiosamente las luces rojas de la mayoría de semáforos tenían forma de corazón (y había muchos dibujados en los aparadores) ¿alguien sabe el motivo?. En un principio pensé que Akureyri significaba corazón pero parece ser que no.
