Perhaps the only bright spot that emerged from last season for New York Islanders was the chance to select John Tavares. The Toronto Maple Leafs won’t even get a high draft pick with a terrible finish.

Toronto-area native Tavares and the Islanders look to end a seven-game road trip on high note as they face the lowly Maple Leafs on Monday night.

A league-low 61 points last season put New York in position to draft Tavares with the No. 1 overall pick. The 19-year-old center, born in Mississauga, Ontario – approximately 18 miles from Toronto – will make his Air Canada Centre debut.

Tavares has nine goals and 10 assists in 23 games, and has the Islanders (8-8-7) thinking they can end a three-season playoff drought.

The Maple Leafs (4-11-6) have an NHL-low 14 points, but continuing on that pace wouldn’t give them a shot at drafting a first-round talent.

Toronto traded its 2010 first-round pick to Boston for forward Phil Kessel, who has five goals and three assists in nine games.

The Maple Leafs are coming off their second home win, 2-1 in a shootout over Washington on Saturday night. Toronto entered the matchup 1-6-2 at Air Canada Centre.

New York has lost two straight following a 2-0-2 start to the seven-game trip, its longest of the season. The Islanders have dropped consecutive games in regulation for the first time since Nov. 4-6.

New York lost 4-1 to St. Louis on Saturday night after falling 3-2 to Minnesota the previous evening.

Tavares was held off the scoresheet in each contest after posting four goals and four assists during a five-game point streak.

Josh Bailey, though, has scored in two straight for the Islanders. Bailey, the ninth overall pick in the 2008 draft, has five goals and three assists in 22 games this season.

Jeff Tambellini was back on the ice for New York on Saturday after being scratched in the previous four games, but was held without a point for the fourth time in five contests. The left wing has not scored a goal in 13 career games against the Maple Leafs.

Toronto went 3-1-0 versus the Islanders last season and has gone 18-4-1 with one tie in its last 24 home games against them. The Maple Leafs are also coming off a much-needed confidence boost at home, getting a strong effort from goaltender Vesa Toskala as they snapped a five-game losing streak.

Toronto bounced back to win in a tiebreaker after a 6-5 shootout loss at Carolina on Thursday night, when it allowed the tying goal in the final seconds of the third period.

“It shows we got character,” defenseman Ian White said. “We’re not just going to fold over and skate away.”

Toskala, who has been criticized for his early season performance, had his best effort of 2009-10. He made 31 saves and turned away both Capitals opportunities in the shootout.

Toskala, though, gave up four goals in each of his last two contests against New York.

Faith is held as a high priority by Polynesians. Through generations, faith has been carried on by ancestors to remain strong and united. The belief in God or a higher being has allowed Polynesians to carry on their heritage, culture and traditions. Another aspect of faith are the characteristics that it teaches, such as humility, servant-hood and compassion. These are qualities that are emphasized and highly valued among the Polynesian people. A great example of this is NFL star Troy Polamalu, who is of Samoan descent.

Though Polamalu is a well known athlete, his background and heritage are the experiences that built the altar for his faith. Being famous doesn’t always mean fame and glamor as shared in his testimonial. His faith has shaped his perception of how he views his life and everything in it.

  This week, Silver Spoon is stirring up my favorite Malaysian Dish – Mee Goreng – translated to Yummy Malaysian Noodles with Shrimp, Chicken or Tofu!  This dish is popular on the streets of Malaysia (and in Islander restaurants – like my favorite, the Island Hopper, in Boston!)  The thick noodles, the sweet and spicy sauces, and the oh so cute baby bok choy, along with other magical ingredients, combine to make a dish leaving you dreaming about the coasts of Phuket and the sultan of Brunei… and the Malaysian Mambo!  Here’s what the finished product looks like:

And if you dare make it yourself (it’s actually quite easy, so do dare), here’s the recipe I’ve whipped up based on a few I’ve found:

Ingredients (serving 6):

• 1 lb of shrimp or 1 lb of chicken or 14 oz of tofu (my favorite is the shrimp and chicken combo – 1/2 lb of shrimp and 1/2 lb of chicken)
• 1 lb of Chinese lo mein egg noodles or any other thick Chinese egg noodle
• 2 T sesame oil
• 4 garlic cloves, minced (to save time, I buy a huge container of pre-minced garlic – 1/2 t of pre-minced = 1 garlic clove, so 2 t of minced garlic)
• 1/4 t salt
• 4 big heads (to the right) or 8 small heads of baby bok choy (these are at least half the price at the Asian supermarket (as compared to Trader Joes) so if you have an Asian supermarket nearby, add baby bok choy to the shopping list) – see pic below for how to cut
• 1.5 T sugar
• 1.5 T chile paste with garlic (such as sambal oelek) – this is what makes the dish spicy.  For a VERY spicy dish, double this.  Otherwise, 1.5 T makes it sufficiently spicy – even for a Texan who can stand the heat! (see pic)
• 2 T fresh lime juice (about 1 lime)
• 2 T sweet bean paste (see pic)
• 2 T low-sodium soy sauce

Optional Garnish:

• 2 T finely chopped cilantro
• 2 T finely chopped peanuts
• 2 limes, sliced

To cut baby bok choy, cut once vertically (long ways) and then 1/2 inch cuts the other direction

Directions:
1.  Cook noodles in a large pot of boiling water for three minutes** (I had a hard time reading the Chinese directions on my bag of noodles).  After cooking noodles, and before pouring noodles into colander to strain, save 1 cup of the cooking water and set aside.  Pour noodles into colander and set aside.
2.  Dry out pot and return to stove.  Heat oil in pan over medium heat.  Add garlic and continuously stir for 30 seconds.  Add bok choy and salt, stirring frequently for 30 seconds.  Stir in 1/2 cup of cooking liquid, allow it to boil, and then reduce heat and cook for 4 minutes.

3.  **Combine sugar and remaining ingredients in separate bowl (I like to do this while the water is heating).
4.  Stir in noodles, remaining cooking liquid, and sugar mixture.  Toss until combined.
5.  Add either thawed (precooked shrimp), tofu, or pre-cooked chicken (to cook the chicken, simply place finely sliced chicken into a wok and grill with a tablespoon of olive oil and a teaspoon of garlic).

6.  Cook 30 more seconds.
7.  Garnish with a dash of cilantro and peanuts, and a lime wedge.  Serve immediately (or package leftovers for the rest of the week!)

Vor zwei Wochen war ich mit Freundin und Bekannten auf einer Reittour mit Islandpferden. Wie auf Wikipedia beschrieben und was ich auch bestätigen kann, sind diese Pferde schön ruhig, nicht zu groß und lassen sich auch ohne Erfahrung reiten.

An besagtem Reitsonntag sind wir zu viert nach Kyrkekvarn zu einem Reithof gefahren und haben eine 2-Stunden-Tour gebucht. Am Stall angekommen, mussten wir uns erstmal Ausrüstung (Helm) aus dem Lager aussuchen und vor dem Tor aufstellen. Von einer der Tourleiterinnen wurde uns der Umgang mit Pferden erklärt, wie man Sattel und Saum einstellt und auf das Pferd auf- und absteigt. Jeder von uns wurde zu einem passenden Pferd im Stall eingeteilt und durfte es nach draußen führen. Nachdem alle aufgestiegen und alle Gurte überprüft waren, durften wir zum “Aufwärmen” in einer kleinen Koppel im Kreis reiten um etwas Gefühl für das Tier zu bekommen.

Danach ging es los in die Berge. Zwischendurch wurde immer wieder Halt gemacht, um einige Dinge zu erklären, z.B. die Gangarten. Eine Besonderheit von Islandpferden ist ihre Fähigkeit zum Tölt, eine Gangart, die einen ruhigen Ritt erlauben soll. Ich bin mir aber nicht sicher, ob das bei mir so richtig funktioniert hat, bin trotzdem gut durchgeschüttelt worden…

Da die gesamte Reittruppe aus ca. 15–20 Leute bestand, sind wir als eine lange Kette geritten. Mein Pferd („Blakkur“) kannte die Ausflugsroute schon sehr gut und ist praktisch ohne Lenken der Strecke gefolgt. Auf den Strecken, wo wir galoppieren durften, ist das Pferd von alleine losgerannt.

Etwa auf halber Strecke wurde Rast eingelegt mit Tee/Kaffee und belegten Broten. Für die Pferde gab es Knäckebrot. Danach wurde die Gruppe in eine “langsame” und eine “schnelle” Hälfte aufgeteilt. Als Anfänger sollte ich in der langsamen Gruppe bleiben, aber mein Pferd wollte unbedingt bei der schnellen Gruppe (zuerst weitergeritten) dabei sein. Nur mit kräftigen Zerren ließ es sich zum Warten überreden.

Auf dem Rückweg, überwiegend bergab, hatte man einen schönen Überblick über die Umgebung, trotz des leichten Regens, der dann einsetzte. Zurück am Stall mussten die Pferde versorgt, Zaumzeug abgemacht, gereinigt und ins Lager gebracht werden. Mit dem Wetter hatten wir insgesamt Glück, erst auf der Rückfahrt setzte der Wolkenbruch ein.

Insgesamt ein schöner Ausflug, kann ich jedem Schweden-Touristen wärmstens empfehlen.

The Caribbean sun has risen, rays of light shine upon his face. He smells of his mother’s sweet cooking & already he can taste. On the table there is a cup of hot bush tea, “Drink up” his mother said. “Mek sure before yo come sit down, yo already mek up yo bed”.

He looks back & can’t help but giggle, remembering his younger days. Reminiscing on the time that has passed & the way that he was raised. A proud product of the Caribbean, his memories has taken him back. The story of this Caribbean boy, a journey to be more exact.

It is where he was raised from since birth, island born & bred. Chicken legs & Johnny cakes are some things that he was fed. Tamarind stew & Calalou, watch the mango juice drip down his arm. He’s eating the plums quickly now, before they’re blown away by the storm.

So many fruits to choose from, he’s looking for the best to pick. He can either climb, shake the tree, or hit them with a tan tan stick. Falling to the ground like raindrops, doing everything but staying still.  Yo know after knocking the ripe ones off the tree, he picks them up down the hill!

He then remembers catching the many butterflies, spiders & lizards too. Stayed far away from the centipedes, one bite had once turned his skin blue. Had to be aware of Jack Spaniards, sting- a-nettle & honey bees. Always had to be 100% certain that they weren’t lurking in the trees.

The days of living his life care free with not a worry to take on. Like magic, in the twinkle of an eye, his younger years were gone. His memories & recollections will always resurrect an inner joy. Oh how he wishes he could relive those days…

When He Was That Caribbean Boy

  Well,  I must say this is one of the finest day’s,  I have had in a while.  After hanging out at this Polynesian Pig Roast and watching Tahitian dancer’s with their hypnotic exotic movement.  If you have ever had the chance to see one of these, what a site to see.  I’LL just say It was very intoxicating and  erotic, I also took care of some business with a good  friend here in Tahiti.    I ended up working on my boat for a while.  Occasionally strolling up to the tiki bar for a cold beverage.   I knew eventually that I would be summoned soon to see Chief Mai Tuanaii, and I was looking forward to this.    To me, I felt quite honored about this arrangement.

    After working and making minor repairs on my 47′ Sabre Sailing Cruiser.  One of the locals walked up and said Sir , Tristian it is my honor and privilege to give you this private invitation from the High Chief Mai Taunaii asking you to come to his house for dinner and private ritual.    My name is Fainuii Uli and I would be happy to escort you.  Well, I am happy to accept and thank you Fainuii.    Yes, this is what I have been anticipating for over three years now.  I have been sailing these Polynesian water’s for 11 year’s and I am known as Tristian the sailor, one who sails alone.  I have done a bit of Island Trading, and some Privateer work for some of these Islands.   I have also done special favors for High Chiefs and helped smooth diplomatic relations amongst these Pacific Islands.  As I get ready to head over to the chief’s house overlooking the Tiki MaLei lagoon.   You can’t miss his establishment, it’s the house with all the tiki torches on the third cliff..   Well , I better get going to meet Fainuii at tiki bar that’s where I told him I would meet him.  The invitation said to dress casual and arrive 1 hr early.   I have to admit I really enjoyed the Tahitian dance earlier, I thought that these women are so beautiful, one of them caught my eyes and smiled back to me.   I honestly became aroused viewing all of this.    So after grabbing a nice Strong Island drink , Fainuii and I strolled on over to chief’s house.  I can see this brilliant light coming just from that second cliff where we are heading.  Their was a lite Island breeze that felt nice, sort of a natural air conditioner if you will.  After walking a short while longer , Fainuii said this is where I stop.  I told him thanks and good-bye, he smiled back.  Then a man wearing all white welcomes me and instructs me to go over to hut near a sauna and this beautifully Paradise Oasis constructed pool. 

  As I enter , I am greeted by these two beautiful Tahitian women they take me into this room and instruct me to dis-clothe and lay on this bed, that has candles all around it and their are these glass bottles with some sort of liquid in them.   Ok, sure I have no problem with this, what lay on a bed with these woman in here, one of witch I had recognized from a dance earlier today.    As I am laying there , they appear and one starts pouring this oily substance on my back and legs as the other one starts rubbing it into my shoulders and back, this must must be some sort of ointment they use.  Wow, this really feels good and I start to submit to the touch of their hands on my body.   After a short but exciting while one of them asks me turn over on my backside while the other one disappears.  

    I roll over and she continues massaging this oil into my skin and slowly slides her hand up my thigh and smiles at me obviously noticing that I am enjoying this.  She smiles at me with both an exotic and erotic face that one can only appreciate.  As I am enjoying this she then ask’s that I get up and go into the steam room.   I walk into this room that is filled with hot steam coming out of lava rocks.  Then she appears only wearing one of them hula skirts, she directs me to sit  and she joins me.  She kneels down in front of  me starts applying more of this ointment on my private are.  And I must say that this is very erotic and I love It.  She then ask’s me to go back in to other room and drink this special drink prepared for me.  I walk into room and grab this Coconut shell and drink this earthly substance and get dressed.  

   As I am escorted to meet the high-chief, I start to feel a little high from that experience and my body tingling with an arousal effect, I could only dream about.    I have never felt so ready to engage in sex, it was an awesome feeling.   Finally, I see Chief Mai and bow in respect and say hello , he smiles at me with this look of sincere happiness and a father like glance.   He says Tristian , how great it is to have your presence at my house.    I must say it is a pleasure to have known you  for almost 9 yrs now.   And I am very honored to give you a special gift that I hope you will accept and honor.   I look back and say it is my honor to be here and accept your gift, and I thank you Chief Mai.  I am then approached by this tall Islander man with his face painted with Polynesian markings,  I didn’t recognize him.  He hands over to me a tattoo print that will be applied to my body tomorrow at sunrise at the second cliff close by.  It is an ancient Polynesian print that means one who travels the oceans with respect and honor.  I was absolutely very pleased to receive this , and thanked Chief Mai once more.    

So. Nun habe ich auch endlich Avatar und Erscheinungsbild legalisiert. Auch wenn mir das neugierige Rotkehlchen als Lieblingsvogel einfach super gefiel, ich habe es mir halt nur irgendwoher geklaut. Ohne jede Beachtung des Copyrights .

Aber wenn ich nun im “größeren” Rahmen für Bibliothek2009-Anwender Empfehlungen für englische Serien ausspreche, soll natürlich alles auf rechtlich einwandfreier Basis stehen . Und damit wird klar: ja, auch Bibliothekarinnen haben Hobbies außerhalb des reinen, wahren Lesens. Meines ist sozusagen multikulturell: eine außerordentlich selbstbewusste Dame aus Island, lebt nun in Deutschland, zwischenzeitlich modisch ausgestattet mit einem australischen Stock-Saddle, mittlerweile mit einem Western-ähnlichem Teil namens Endurance-Sattel. Was soll ich sagen? Es funktioniert!

Vreau sa inceteze sa-mi mai para rau, vreau sa inceteze sa-mi mai pese … insa nu se poate asa mi-am conceput eu sufletul. Urasc sa-l las sa se vada, urasc sa vada si ceilalti cine sunt cu adevarat. Au fost foarte putine persoane care mi-au “atins” cu adevarat sufletul, insa atunci a fost altceva … au reusit sa ajunga acolo fara “sa-mi ceara voie”, pur si simplu asa a fost sa fie. Si eu ce am facut? … nimic … am dat cu piciorul sansei. Ce rost mai are acum? pentru mine are uite Razvane … nu pot sa merg mai departe …
Doar acele momente in care ma simt cu adevarat singur, ca un copil “netrecut” inca prin viata, oricat de putin am gustat eu din ea, din acest mar pe care avem ocazia de al creste si de a-i da culoarea pe care o vrem. Mi-am dat seama de foarte multe, numai sunt copilul care eram … numai vreau sa fiu copilul care eram. Vreau sa pot sa schimb ceva, sa fiu cineva … vreau ca, copii mei sa aiba camera lor … si sa fie mandrii cand imi zic tata, vreau sa simt din nou acei fluturi in stomac … vreau sa simt din nou acei fiori cand o astept sa apara.
Cati dintre voi nu au ras la cuvintele mele de mai sus, stiu stiu si mie mi se pare ca ma cred prea important poate asa e … sau poate nu … acele cuvinte vin din suflet si atat. Nu stiu cat de constient sunt eu cand scriu … nu gandesc de doua ori ce sa scriu, nu fac pauza cuvintele vin pur si simplu. Nu cred ca lumea mai poate fi schimbata … nu ne mai poate salva nimic. Am ajuns la apogeu … si stiu ca o sa vina un “Nero” care o sa arda si “Roma” mea … numai este mult … numai este mult pana atunci.
Din toata melodia cel mai mult imi rasuna “The tears he left behind so long ago” … e timpul sa las si eu “tears” behind nu? … Am incercat sa ma schimb crede-ma dar degeaba … pana la urma asta sunt eu … nu stiu cat de mult o sa fie asa … dar pana atunci asa o sa fie!
Nu este nimic special cu mine, desi am crezut asta … in ultima vreme am citit o gramda de bloguri de la oameni cu adevarati talentati, oameni care pot cu adevarat sa scrie, oameni care te fac sa-ti tii respiratia cand le citesti blogurile. Eu nu merit sa ma consider unu dintre ei, nu am inca notiunile necesare poate nu ma duce capul sa pot scrie ceva frumos, ceva ce merita cititi. Am crezut asta … am sperat asta … am incercat sa gasesc asta. Cum mi-a zis cineva … “la inceput iti citeam blogul, acum a devenit ceva monoton ceva de zi cu zi”.
O sa mai scriu o sa mai incerc … nu stiu … insa nu vreau sa las blogu’ asta sa moara … desi aici nu conteaza neaparat ce vreau eu, conteaza si ce vreti voi … da voi care inca mai da-ti si pe blog meu doar pentru a vedea “ce a mai scris si ala”. Chapter 62 … mda … cate Chaptere au fost facute degeaba … chiar acum ma uit la 61 si ma intreb … de ce? … este prea mult prea mult un chapter pe zi. Dar o sa continui … o sa fie si Chaptere cum a fost 61 o sa fie si Chaptere cum este asta …
Tot ce conteaza este ca acest blog sa nu moara … INCA!
